Introduction:

Vaastu in its general sense means the place where living beings dwell while in Rig Veda it has been applied to the home. Originally Vaastu is derived from the Sanskrit word, “VAAS” meaning a place to reside. However, in “Samarangana Sutradhara” the origin of Vaastu is defined as “VASU” or “THE EARTH” so that the mother earth and all the creation above it are called Vaastu. Vaastu is applied to both the sides of the building and the building itself. Hence selection of the site, architecture, landscape, and the science of the structures as well as astrology are all components of Vaastu Science.

The main component of Vaastu Shastra’s knowledge of architecture was to guide people to create spaces that harmonize with nature and with universal forces. The use of Vaastu, rooted in Hinduism philosophy, dates back to the Vedic period and appeared between 4000 and 2000 B.C. A section of Yajurveda called “Sthapatya Veda” which means the art of building, mainly deals with the principles of architecture and housing.

According to Rigveda ancient times were closely associated with religion and building a structure was recognized as a religious act. It was religious in origin but since Vaastu is similar to yoga and Ayurveda denotes the connection between law and processes that govern the world of nature and the law which governs the human body, it has been perceived as religious in ancient societies. Therefore, its principles should not be interpreted as mystic superstitions, but rather based on the law of nature and the surrounding environment.

The Vedas profound that aside from the physical body, an individual constitutes his mind and his intellect and is presided over or enlivened by the consciousness of the cosmos. The mind functions twofold, to acquire knowledge through the five senses (Gyan Indriyas) and to act in the world outside through the five related organs (Karam Indriyas). The five basic elements of nature namely the space, the air, the fire, the water, and the earth corresponds to sensations of hearing, touch, sight, taste, and smell respectively. Intellect is the discriminating power in us, to take decisions for elevation to righteousness or to indulge in sensual short-lived pleasures, to endeavor to rediscover the alpha and omega of reality or to succumb to desires and remain in worldly illusions.

Vaastu as a traditional guide to architecture aims to design buildings in harmony with the universe’s natural laws. “As Einstein proved, everything in existence, sentient and non-sentient, is a field of energy. In this case, Vaastu is referred to as pure subtle energy that underlies everything while “Vaastu” is the manifestation or expression of that energy as matted Vaastu, is a science of working with energy fields used to guide the architects to design buildings in a way that their underlying energy fields which used to guide the architects to design buildings in a way that their underlying energy fields are beneficially manipulated due to proportion and direction. Thus, Vaastu views dwelling places as living entities that nourish our lives, rather than a machine for a living. In this science home is a symbol of the physical body which is interrelated with the universal energy field and at the same time a microcosm of existence.

Vaastu regulates the relationship between man and his environment. An architect should exhibit his skill by overcoming the difficulties and differences between the principles laid down in Vedas and the need of the present-day requirements, keeping in mind the original relation between

man and nature and finding acceptable solutions. For good results, it is more important to put correct questions than to find the answer to the wrong questions.

In the Vedic period the sages who understood fully well, the science of Vaastu shastra put into practice the correct and safe locations of various famous structures in the shape of temples, hermitages, palaces, and monasteries particularly those built in Himalayan regions which were planned within these energy grids, still after thousand years are safeguarding their destruction from earthquakes and another natural calamity. In India, there are seven Vaastu shastra in different parts of the country. Each one is developed separately for a respective agro-climatic and eco-cultural zone. Some of these are the Mayamata, the Manasara, the Samarangana Sutradhara, the Rajavallabha, the Vishvakarmaprakasha, and the Aparajitaprccha.

Indian culture lays immense emphasis on spirituality and obtaining divine blessings. It is believed to be of great value for the well-being, health, and happiness of the people. However, in modern times the role of our ancient wisdom of designing is not prioritized. Architecture, when focused completely only on the comfort creation taking the site, bye-laws, and client’s requirements as well as fancies as standards for consideration somewhere adopts a narrow picture. The fact that heavenly bodies are constantly exerting their magnetic and gravitational force on us is a proven reality. Furthermore, the earth itself possesses a magnetic aura of its own. It is thus quite logical to argue that these magnetic forces will have an impact on our minds and therefore on our lives. Vaastu Shastra is the science of building design and planning that deals with the study and practice of the inter-relationship of the forces of nature, heavenly bodies, and supernatural elements in the cosmos.

Why One Should Follow Vaastu?

Vaastu shastra is an ancient building science that covers the philosophy and theory of Architectural works to construct any building as well as the living style of people. Vaastu shastra is based on various natural energies, which are available free of cost in the atmosphere like:

➢ Solar energy from Sun

➢ Lunar Energy from Moon

➢ Earth energy

➢ Sky Energy

➢ Electric Energy Magnetic Energy

➢ Thermal Energy

➢ Wind Energy

➢ Light Energy

➢ Cosmic Energy

Utilization of such energies gives us pleasure peace, prosperity, money, etc in our life. Nowadays we are having National Building code, which gives us certain regulations to construct buildings, whereas in past our ancestors were having Vaastu Shastra as a religious & rigorous code. As per shastra, Vaastu Purush is the god of building science, hence let us pray.

Thus, Vaastu is rational, as it is scientific, it is permanent as it is based on directions and directions are unchangeable. It is beneficial as it is a bridge between man, material, and nature, and above all, it is practical, as it is very simple to follow. Build your house according to the guidelines

provided by Vaastu and lead a healthy and happy life. Sun indicates light (illumination) will power, generosity, solar system, luck or fate, mobility, and in the body. It rules over bone, eye, heart, spinal cord, blood circulation, soul, etc. Hence east direction is auspicious; it belongs to lord Indra. North is considered auspicious since magnetic lines of force move from North to South, thus the origin of all life. There are three forces in action to create harmony. Wind, water, and fire or, Vaayu, Jal, and Agni.

If these forces are kept in their appropriate places, then there will be no disturbance. But if water is put in place of fire and wind in place of water or any other combination, the forces will start acting accordingly and create disharmony and unpeacefulness.

Historical Background:

There are many stories regarding Vaastu Purusha. According to the Indian scriptures, there once existed a demon known as Andhakasura. Due to his evil deeds Lord Shiva, who is regarded as the greatest of all Gods (Devon Ke Dev Mahadeva) exterminated the demon in the fierce battle between them. During the event, drops of sweat from the forehead of Lord Shiva fell onto earth. As these drops touched the surface of the earth, a creature with a dangerous face was formed. Right after his formation, he drank the blood of Andhakasura. But still, he could not satiate his thirst. He then started strict meditation on Lord Shiva. After years of meditation, Lord Shiva got pleased by him and asked him to ask for a wish. The creature asked Lord Shiva to grant him the ability to be able to swallow all three regions (Heaven, Earth, and Hell) of the universe. After obtaining the blessing she started to block the three regions and fell on the earth. At this, the Gods got scared and turned him into a statue then and there itself. The creature was facing downwards. It is believed that the Gods permanently started residing on the respective organs where the Gods were touching him. It is due to the reason that every God resided in him that the name.

The origin of Vaastu shastra may have taken place well over thousands of years ago. The learned men of those days may not have lived in houses themselves but they most definitely dedicated their lives to the development of the science "Vaastu shastra" or "Vaastu", as it is popularly known today.

The principles of the science laid down during those days were based purely on the effect of sunrays during different times of the day. The observations and corrections made were noted and concluded only after the in-depth screening of the situation.

Vaastu is a part of the Vedas, which are believed to be four to five thousand years old. Through penance and meditation yogis of that period acquired answers believed to have come from the cosmic mind itself to their questions. Hence Vedas are heeded with divine knowledge. The art of Vaastu originates in the Stapatya Veda, a part of the Atharva Veda.

It used to be a purely technical subject and it was only confined to architects (Sthapatis) and handed over to their heirs. The principles of construction, architecture, sculpture, etc., as enunciated in the epics and treatise on temple architecture, have been incorporated into the science of Vaastu. Its description is there in epics like Mataysya Purana, Skanda Purana, Agni Purana, Garuda Purana, and Vishnu Purana. There are some other ancient shastras that pass over the knowledge of Vaastu shastra to the next generation, like Vishvakarma Prakash, Samraangan Sutradhar, Kashyap Shilpshastra, Vrihad Sanhita, and Praman Manjaree.

In the Mahabharata, it is said several houses were built for the kings who were invited to the city Indraprastha for the Rajasuya Yagna of King Yuddhistira. Sage Vyasa says that these houses were as high as the

peaks of the Kailasa mountains, perhaps meaning that they stood tall and majestic. The houses were free from obstructions, had compounds with high walls and their doors were of uniform height and inlaid with numerous metal ornaments. It is said that the site plan of Ayodhya, the city of Lord Rama was similar to the plan found in the great architectural text Manasara. References are also to be found in Buddhist literature, of buildings constructed based on Vaastu. They contain references to individual buildings. Lord Buddha is said to have delivered discourses on architecture and even told his disciples that supervising the construction of a building was one of the duties of the order. Mention is made of monasteries (Viharas) or temples, buildings that are partly residential and partly religious (Ardhayogas), residential storeyed buildings (Prasadas), multi-storeyed buildings (harmyas), and Guhas or residential buildings for middle-class people.

Vaastu Purusha:

The Vaastu Purusha is said to be lying with his face and stomach touching the ground. His head is in the North-East (Eshanya) and his legs are in the South-West (Nairitya). The whole body occupies the Vaastu Purusha Mandala with the abdomen portion occupying exactly the center of the mandala which belongs to the Lord Brahma. The Vaastu Purusha mandala has 45 deities which are nothing but the positive forces on a plot (or on earth) that are capable of stopping the negative forces, otherwise, these negative forces can eat or destroy everything on earth in the form of the weird personality of Vaastu Purusha.

The logical concept of Vaastu Purusha:

In ancient times there was the absence of instruments to prove things to make the people understand as present time. Every intellectual work is done by thinking, perception, imagination, and experience and followed by the people automatically for the sake of religion so the story of its emergence from lord Shiva came into being. In Siddha Shiv tradition Nama Shivaya is considered as Pancha bhutas tatva of lord shiva and universal oneness of five elements, "NA" sound represents –Earth (Prithvi), "MA" sounds represents-Water (Jal), "SI' sound representsFire (Agni), "VA" sound represents – Air (Pran Vayu), "YA" sound represents –Sky (Space, Akasha). Its total meaning is that "Universal Consciousness is Hindu Mythology describes the positive (favourable) and negative (unfavourable) as God and devil, it similar to that, in day to day life that all human beings, place, and thing are called by names.

Apart from it, Hindu mythology describes God or supreme or universal energy in two forms i.e.; one saakar swaroopa and another one niraakar swaroopa. saakar swaroopa (unsubtle) can be given some form and description and niraakar swaroopa- (subtle)-one which is beyond from‖ form and description” (a soul or a form of invisible energy). Now from the above point of view, it is clear that the Vaastu Purusha is the reflected form of energy of lord shiva (nature) as explained by intellectual people or sages to make the process of designing and understanding easier. They gave the name demi-god and explained by taking the saakar swaroopa of God (nature) as if satisfied as per the guidelines of Vaastushastra behave favourably for the occupants of the building by creating comfortable living conditions otherwise make the building worst to live.

Types of Vaastu Purusha:

• Sthira Vaastu - It is the representation of the rotation of the earth on its axis. The flow of electromagnetic field on earth, the directions, rise, and set of sun. (Solar cycle)

• Nitya Vaastu - It represents the daily movement of the sun, the relationship of human beings with the sun, the arrangement of spaces in a building as per their need throughout the day along with health benefits of the sun.

Apart from the earth‘s magnetic and the movement of the sun Vaastu shastra has considered wind direction to provide the openings of windows now and doors. The ideal direction of windows as per Vaastu shastra is north towards the northeast, east towards the northeast, and west towards the northwest

• Chara Vaastu - It represents the yearly movement of the sun and the importance of summer and winter solstice; people in ancient times prefer to do the important work during the summer solstice because the duration of sunlight is more.

By giving importance toChara Vaastu they incorporated the passive solar design into the buildings. The passive solar design uses the predictable movements of the sun to utilize its energy within the building‘s overall design for both heating and cooling purposes.

Advantages of Designing a House Based on ‘Vaastu Purusha Mandala”:

According to Vaastu Shastra, if the house is designed as per the Vaastu Purusha Mandala, a perfectly balanced environment that ensures enhanced health, wealth, and happiness is created. The Scientific Explanation: This is based on scientific principles wherein, the Sun, the five basic elements (panchabhutaas), the Earth’s magnetic field, Earth’s energy fields, and the eight directions are manipulated to create an atmosphere beneficial to man. The Vaastu pundits figured out that, when the different rooms were placed according to the Vaastu Mandala created by them, good disposition to the Sun, proper ventilation and lighting, and privacy would be ensured in the building.

The logic behind the positioning of different rooms according to the Vaastu Purusha Mandala:

The Sun emits two types of rays; Ultra-Violate and Infra-Red. These rays have various effects on the human body and the environment. This is one of the basic principles of the Vaastu Shastra. Because of the importance of sunlight to humans, the main aim of Vaastu Shastra is to ensure that the inmates of a house are inadvertently exposed to the useful rays of sunlight, even if they are inside the house the whole day. However, during the day, people perform different activities in different rooms at different times and the Sun’s position keeps changing from sunrise to sunset. So to ensure that the inmates are exposed to sunlight constantly, each room should be positioned so that it faces the Sun at the time of the day when it is most likely to be used.

The 24 hours of 1 solar day are divided into eight parts, which are associated with the eight cardinal directions. In each of these eight

periods, the Sun is positioned in one of the cardinal directions. Therefore, the room which is most likely to be used during that period is located in this direction. This is explained here:

✓ ‘Pooja’ Room or meditation room in the North-East:

The period between 3 am and 6 am, just before sunrise is called ‘Brahma Muhurta’. At this time, the Sun is in the North-Eastern part of the house. These hours are ideal for Yoga, meditation, or study as it is very quiet and peaceful. Therefore, the North-East corner is the best position for the ‘Pooja’ room or prayer/ meditation room.

✓ Bathroom, doors/windows in the East:

From 6 am to 7.30 am, the Sun is in the eastern part of the house. This is the time for bathing and preparing for the day, so East is a good location for a bathroom used for bathing purposes only. In addition, there should be many openings and no obstructions in the East so that the beneficial ultraviolet rays of the morning Sun will engulf the house.

✓ Kitchen in the South-East:

The time between 7.30 am to 9 am, when the Sun is in the SouthEast part of the house, is the best time for preparing food to be eaten later in the day. The Sun emits more ultraviolet rays in the morning hours than any other time of the day, which has a good effect on the human body and the environment surrounding him. These rays tend to kill bacteria. This is the way the kitchen is preferred on the eastern side. It is also good to have morning rays fall on our eyes and which is why the kitchen platform should be oriented towards the eastern side so that while cooking food ultraviolet rays will enter the eyes. Therefore, the kitchen can be located here, as the UV rays of the Sun will keep the kitchen counter free from germs that spoil the food.

✓ Bedroom, Office, Storeroom in the South:

The period between 9 am and noon is the time for work. The Sun is now in the South, and hence this is the best position for an office and a bedroom. By noon, the intensity of the heat is high and so the South is ideal for store rooms that need to be moisture-proof

✓ Master bedroom, Wardrobes in the South-West:

After lunch, it is time for rest, so the time between noon and 3 pm is called Vishranti, the resting period. The Sun is now in the SouthWest section of the house and so it is the ideal location for a Master bedroom and the wardrobes should be kept on the west wall to reduce the heat.

✓ Children’s bedroom, study room, and toilets in the West:

The period between 3 pm and 6 pm is the time for children to study. The Sun is in the West and this is the best location for a children’s bedroom or study room. Since the West gets very heated up, it is beneficial to have less-used rooms like restrooms/toilets, which serve as buffers to the heat.

✓ Second bedroom, dining room in the North-West:

Generally, the time between 6 pm and 9 pm, when the Sun is in the North-West part of the house, is the time for eating, relaxing, and sleeping. Therefore, this direction is good for another bedroom and dining room.

✓ Safe, Living room in the North:

The time between midnight and 3 am, when the Sun is in the Northern section, is the time of darkness and secrecy. The North is therefore the best place to hide valuables and to keep them protected.

✓ No to Swimming Pools/ Water Bodies in the South-West:

The Sun emits more infrared rays during evening hours which are harmful. Water bodies placed at South-West corners are, therefore, not desirable the reflected Infra-Red rays from the water body in this direction enter the house and hurt the human body.

Elements Of Vaastu:

Vaastu is a science of direction that combines the five elements of nature and the cosmos, ultimately balancing with man and the material. This mysterious science unifies the five elements called ‘Panchbhootas’earth, fire, water, sky, and space and paving a way for enlightenment, happiness, and prosperity. According to Vaastu, the cosmos is full of beneficial energies which we must learn to tack as well as keep in balance if we wish to experience a state of well-being. Energy is essentially emanated by two forces- the five elements and the electromagnetic energy generated by the rotation of the earth. Earth is the third planet among the nine planets and the only place where life exist due to the presence of panchbhootas. Sun, air, and space are universally available and can be molded by human needs through the act of design. To thoroughly understand the act of design with these five elements we need to discuss all these elements briefly in a separate manner:

• Earth-The first and foremost element of nature which exerts maximum energy. It is necessary to consult the land you are purchasing, as the plot’s soil, area everything matters in Vaastu. The selection of the site is considered very important in the Vaastu element. A detailed inspection of soil, plot, site, shape, and size has to be done before commencing the construction. Earth (Prithvi) is the most important element in Vaastu and influences human lives in every way.

• Water-Water (Jal) is present on earth in the form of rain, ocean, sea, and rivers. It is the second foremost element considered in Vaastu. Vaastu provides proper directions for the placement of water sources. Water is an element of northeast. As far as the flow of domestic water is concerned, it should be drained out of the northeast only. The water bodies such as swimming pool and aquarium etc. need to be made in north-east, this direction is auspicious and suitable for water

• Fire-Fire (Agni) is considered an element of the southeast. In a house kitchen, fire or electrical gadgets shall be placed in the southeast. Light is the essence of life, and the sun is the natural light giver. Fire is the basis of all sources of energy including thermal power and atomic power. There should be proper ventilation for sunlight is necessary and a natural source of light for human beings.

• Air-Air (Vayu) is a necessary thing for all of us living on this earth. In Vaastu air is another important element that is considered before applying it. Air is an element of northeast. Air consists of various gases on earth like oxygen, nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, etc.

A balanced percentage of different gases, atmospheric pressure, and humidity levels are important for living beings on this earth. There are important directions for windows and doors in Vaastu to receive a good amount of air.

• Space-Sky is never ending and our space is full of constellations, galaxies, stars, the moon, the sun, and all nine planets. It is also called the universe which is known as ‘Brahamand’- the place of god. Space has a very important placein our lives and Vaastu gives different directions for better space. Indian houses used to have open spaces in the center of the house. Akash is a brahmasthan which should be an open place, any disturbance related to space in the house would lead to detrimental results.

Vaastu Compass And Directions:

In Vaastu Shastra, one of the most frequently asked questions is how to use the compass to find the facing of the house It is an important question because the ancient building science of Vaastu shastra is entirely direction-based and directions in Vaastu shastra are held as the energy centers.

Therefore, if our compass reading is inaccurate then we cannot make the house Vaastu compliant as a difference of even 3-4 degrees will make the entire calculation of 16 Vaastu zones completely wrong. It will also make it difficult for us to uncover the root cause of the problems.

Hence, to apply all the Vaastu principles properly we need to find out the accurate directions of a house. It can be a very confusing and difficult task in the beginning to determine the directions. But if we follow the Vaastu guidelines carefully one can find out that it is not rocket science.

Finding Directions

Art of Reading Vaastu Compass

This Article Will Explain The Following Things:

1. What is the compass?

2. Things to be kept in mind while using the compass

3. Taking accurate compass reading

4. Making a floor plan

• Finding The Center Point of The House

• Main Entrance Location

• 16 Vaastu Zones

5. Importance of all cardinal and ordinal direction

What is Compass?

To learn how a compass works, one must find out what a compass is.

In the olden days, people used to see the shadow of the sun to determine the directions. In the modern and technologically advanced world,d we can use a magnetic device called a compass to check the directions very minutely.

A compass is a device with a magnetic needle that helps us to find out the directions relative to the Earth’s magnetic poles.

This magnetic needle is balanced on a nearly frictionless pivot point. The one end of the compass needle is usually coloured in red or green colour or marked with ‘N’ to indicate that it points toward the North direction.

The one end of the needle in the magnetic compass aligns itself with the earth’s magnetic field which means it will always point towards the magnetic North of the earth which is different from the geographic North.

In the picture given below, we can see that each direction is located at a particular degree on the compass. For instance, the North is located at 0° or 360° degrees, the East is located at 90° degrees, and 180° on the compass is indicating the South direction.

When it comes to choosing a compass we can always go with a magnetic compass that gives us a degree number from 360°/0° to 359°. However, if we don’t have a standard magnetic compass, we can also use the compass app on our smartphone to find out the facing or direction of the property.

Things to be kept in mind while using the compass:

While using a compass we need to remember some important tips which are as follows:

• We need to make sure that we are away from structures that could affect the magnetic needle (and hence the reading) of the compass.

• We must not carry a mobile phone, laptop, or any iron object.

• There should not be any high-voltage power lines where we stand while using the compass.

• We must ensure that there are no magnetic objects near the compass.

• We must remove all jewellery on hands and wrists as it may interfere with the reading.

Taking accurate compass readings:

Finding the facing of any house is very easy and simple. All we need to do is to follow these steps:

• Imagine that the front of a house (i.e., the main gate of your house) is oriented to a park. To take the compass reading we will have to stand parallel to a wall with our faces looking at the park.

• We must put the compass on our palm and keep the elbow at 90 degrees (horizontally) at chest level.

• We must keep our hand as steady as possible and rotate the housing dial until the compass needle (usually a red or green coloured tip) lines up with the orienting arrow.

• Once the 0°/360° mark on the compass housing and the North end of the needle are aligned we should determine what line is directly in front of us. In other words, the compass line which is exactly in front of us shows the actual degree or the facing of your house. Let’s say that the compass reading is 45° (NorthEast). Then North-East (NE) will be the facing of a house.

• We must take at least 3 reading from different parts of a house or property to determine the correct direction. Sometimes, the three readings will differ. In that case, add all three readings up and divide by 3, i.e., 130+128+132=390 divided by 3 = 130 degrees. It will be the facing of a home.

• We will now have an accurate facing of a house.

• We also need to find out the exact North point of a house to make the floor plan according to the Vaastu. Let’s assume we are facing a particular wall of a property and the compass reading is 45° degrees, then by measuring 45° anti-clockwise from that point, facing the same wall on the map and that would be the North direction of a house.

Making a floor plan:

Now the next most important step is to grid the map of a house and locate the main entrance as well as mark all the 16 Vaastu zones of a floor plan. But before we do that we need to find out the exact center point of the house.

Finding the center point of the house on the map:

As we can see in the picture given below, I had to mark all four corners of a house as points A, B, C, and D. Now we must draw a line from points A to C and B to D. The point where these two lines are crossing each other is the exact center point of a house.

But if there is a cut or extension in any corner of a house, then draw an imaginary line to make the house square or rectangular. After that, mark all the corners as points A, B, C and D. Then draw a line from A to C and B to D. This crossing point of these two lines will be the center point of your house.

Locating the main entrance on a floor plan:

There is a total of 32 possible entrances according to Vaastu shastra. After dividing a circle of 360°, you will get 32 entrances each covering 11.25°. Every cardinal direction (North, East, South, and West) is divided into 8 possible entrances. For instance, 8 entrances for North (N1 to N8), 8 entrances for East (E1 to E8), 8 entrances for South (S1 to S8), 8 entrances for West (W1 to W8).

Each entrance creates its effect but only a few of them offers positive results to the occupants of the house.

Therefore, we have to mark all 32 entrances on the map to decide the best entrance for any house. We must follow these steps to find out the perfect entrance to a house:

• Firstly, we must mark the center point of a house on the map.

• We must determine the exact north point of a house using a compass.

• We must draw a line from the center to the North point of the house.

• After drawing a linefrom the center to the north, we draw another line at 11.25° clockwise from the Northern point. It will be called N5. Now, at the regular interval of 11.25°, we draw the rest of the lines clockwise and mark them as N6, N7, N8, S1, S2, and so on.

• This is how we can mark all 32 entrances on a map and thereafter we will be able to choose the best possible entrance for a house.

• We must remember, each principal direction (North, East, South, and West) has 8 possible entrances. For instance, the north has 8 possible entrances from N1 to N8.

Marking all the 16 Vaastu Zones on the Map:

Once we have decided on the Vaastu-compliant entrance for a house, the next step would be to mark all 16 Vaastu Zones.

16 Vaastu Zones

A positive flow of energy in all the 16 Vaastu zones of a house is extremely important to get the desired results because this flow of energy deeply affects our emotions as well as our thoughts. Therefore, it is important to locate the 16 Vaastu zones on the map and make them Vaastu-friendly.

But, before we determine 16 Vaastu zones of a house map, we need to understand the basic directions and their degree readings. 16 Vaastu zones are composed of four cardinal, four intercardinal, and eight secondary inter-cardinal directions. Each of them is located at a particular degree on the compass.

First of all, we will find out cardinal directions and their degrees on the compass. In a compass, there are four cardinal directions (North, East, South, and West) each separated by 90 degrees. These cardinal directions are:

0°/360° North

90° East

180° South

270° West

These cardinal directions are further divided into four intercardinal (ordinal) directions. Each of the inter-cardinal directions is placed halfway between two cardinal directions. For instance, one of the inter-cardinal directions North-East (45°) is located exactly halfway between the two cardinal directions North (0°) and East (90°). This applies to every inter-cardinal direction. Here are four inter-cardinal directions and their degrees on a compass:

45° NE (North-East)

135° SE (South-East)

225° SW (South-West)

315° NW (North-West)

Apart from the four cardinal (principal) and four inter-cardinal (ordinal) directions, there are secondary inter-cardinal points halfway between each cardinal and inter-cardinal point. These secondary inter-cardinal points are as follows:

22.5° NNE (North North East)

67.5° ENE (East North East)

112.5° ESE (East South East)

157.5° SSE (South South East)

202.5° SSW (South South West)

247.5° WSW (West South West)

292.5° WNW (West North West)

337.5° NNW (North North West)

These cardinal, inter-cardinal, and secondary inter-cardinal directions are known as 16 Vaastu zones. Now, we will mark these Vaastu zones on our house map. For that, we must divide our house into 16 Vaastu Zones each covering 22.5° degrees.

We must follow these steps to determine 16 Vaastu Zones:

• First of all we should draw a line from the center to the North point of the house.

• Then we should draw another line at 22.5° degrees clockwise from the North. It will be called NNE (North-North-East).

• After marking the North and NNE, the rest of the lines should be drawn clockwise on the map at the interval of 22.5° degrees by marking them as ENE, East, ESE, SSE, and so on.

• Once all the 16 Vaastu zones are marked, we must ensure sure to indicate on the map the locations of all the rooms, stairs, kitchen, underground water tank, overhead water tank, etc. Here is a picture that shows the ideal Vaastu zones to locate all the rooms of the house according to Vaastu principles:

Scientific Vaastu Guidelines For Right Site Selection:

It is very important to follow scientific guidelines since the site represents a fixed form, that will radiate positive as well as negative energies depending on its location, orientation, shape, slope, and soil quality. While selecting a plot these five major points are to be kept in mind. Normally a Vaastu Expert is not involved at the time of buying a plot. But as a Vaastu Expert, I would suggest that it is good to involve one, at the time of selecting a plot, as his inputs could be very valuable in deciding the right Site. Generally, the points a Vaastu Expert will keep in mind while selecting a site will be by default as per Vaastu Shastra. If you already own a plot for the construction of a house or office, you should still refer to the Vaastu Guidelines prescribed for the selection of a suitable plot. Given a chance to select among North, South, East, or West facing houses, most people will tend to choose the North or East facing ones because they are considered the most auspicious. However, not every North or East facing house is ideal. The placement of the entrance dictates whether a House is auspicious according to Vaastu Shastra Principles.

In the Selection of a plot, the following Vaastu Guidelines should be looked into, since most of these guidelines are based on scientific reasoning and few on common sense.

• Vaastu guidelines for plot location.

• Vaastu guidelines for plot orientation.

• Vaastu guidelines for plot shape.

• Vaastu guidelines for plotting soil.

• Vaastu guidelines for plot slope.

1. Vaastu guidelines for plot location:

Proper guidelines have been put in Vaastu Shastra for the selection of a plot. As Vaastu is a science, there is logic and reasoning behind every guideline. As a Vaastu Expert, I have attempted to explain these guidelines rationally and scientifically. It is up to you to decide what you want to follow and what you don't.

What is the best location for a plot?

Peaceful, calm place with a lot of greenery and a good water source with good soil, for obvious reasons. The fertile soil is an indication of good soil for construction. While purchasing a piece of land, it is a good idea to stand on the land and feel its vibration for a few moments. If you feel positive about it, consider buying the land. If not, it is probably not good for you. The reasoning is that it is always advisable to trust your instinct but make sure you are not influenced by anything or anyone else, for good reasons. We must check the Plot history; it should be a good history. It is best to buy land where happy and successful people have lived. The natural reasoning behind the concept is psychological, you will feel that the land where people were happy and prosperous; has good vibes or energy. Check for the road adjacent to the plot. A plot with pathways on all four sides is considered the best. It ensures health, wealth, prosperity, and happiness. The natural reasoning for the logic is that a Plot with roads on all four sides is not abutting anybody’s property and hence one can derive maximum lighting and ventilation from all four sides. The next best option is a Plot with roads in the North or East. The reasoning I understand for it is that more light and air can enter from these sides in the mornings.

Which plots are not good?

It is advisable to avoid haunted or dilapidated houses. The Plot should not be purchased, if in the recent past someone has committed suicide on it, or if there have been several deaths over a period of a couple of months. You may psychologically feel uneasy if you happen to know of such a past. Avoid purchasing a plot that has been sold under stress. Such Plots should be purchased only with caution and proper consultation with a Vaastu expert. One good reason is that you may feel psychologically unhappy and guilty, knowing that the Plot was sold out of helplessness and that the previous owner must be still holding onto it.

We have to avoid sites near public places or buildings. The Plot should not be near or adjacent to any public place like a temple, hospital, factory, school, college, etc. Such places will constantly be crowded and noisy. But if they are at least 80 ft to 100 ft away, then the plot is acceptable. We cannot live in an environment with a foul smell. It is advisable to avoid sites near smelly places. The Plot should not be near a meat shop, workshop, leather tannery, laundry, shoe shop, dustbins, sewage drains, etc. The bad smell emanating from these places will permeate the house permanently and naturally create an atmosphere in the house that is not suitable to live in. If the plot is between large plots, it should be avoided. In such plots, the owner of the smaller plot can construct only a much smaller house than the owners of the larger plots and thus, may subconsciously feel 'small' concerning the neighbours. This can create a feeling of inferiority in the owner.

It is good to avoid plots with a lot of cracks or too much-wet soil. The cracks indicate dried-up clayey soil and too wet soil also indicates clayey soil that does not allow the drainage of water. Such soil is not suitable for a building foundation as it will retain moisture and necessitate extra

expenditure for water-proofing the foundation. Strictly avoid Plots facing a T or Y intersection of roads. This is because you can see oncoming traffic and this may give you a nervous feeling or lack of privacy. However, in some cases, as explained below, such plots are acceptable.

What is Verdi Shool as per Vaastu shastra?

Plots facing a T or Y intersection, where roads or lanes run right into the face of the site from different directions are called Veethii (road) Shool (Arrows). Since it is difficult to comment on the different permutations and combinations of roads, oncoming roads, directions, etc, that form the Veedi Shoolas, let us examine the basic considerations, in naming them as good, not bad, bad, and very bad.

• East of North-East: If the oncoming road is from the East, and hits the North-East part of the Plot, it is considered a good site.

• North of North-East: If the oncoming road is from the North, and hits the North-East part of the Plot it is considered a good site.

• West of North-West: If the oncoming road is from the West, and hits the North-West part of the Plot, it is considered as a not-bad site.

• South of South-East: If the oncoming road is from the South, and hits the South-East part of the Plot, it is considered as a not-bad site.

• East of South-East: If the oncoming road is from the East, and hits the South-East part of the Plot, it is considered a bad site.

• North of North-West: If the oncoming road is from the North, and hits the North-West part of the Plot, it is considered a bad site.

• West of South-West: If the oncoming road is from the West, and hits the South-West part of the Plot, it is considered a very bad site.

• South of South-West: If the oncoming road is from the South, and hits the South-West part of the Plot, it is considered a very bad site.

Can the Vidhi Shula be corrected?

If your Plot is facing an intersection, (called a Vidhi Shula), as you can see the oncoming traffic and people, this may give you a nervous feeling or lack of privacy. To overcome this, you can use the corner of the plot that faces the intersection as a garage or car porch, etc so that the main house is not facing the intersection. Or you could fence off that part and use it for some other purpose like a garden or outhouse etc.

2. Vaastu guidelines for site shapes:

As per Vaastu Shastra, the shape of the plot affects the well-being of the inmates. It has been noted that certain shape of plots has a good effect, while other shapes have a bad effect and some plots can be used after making corrections to a suitable shape. As Vaastu is a science, there is logic and reasoning behind every guideline. As a Vaastu Expert, I have attempted to explain these guidelines rationally and scientifically, so that you can decide what you want to follow and what you don't.

Shapes of plots and their effect:

Square plot - A plot with equal length and width is considered an ideal site for construction. As per Vaastu, it ensures all-around growth, prosperity, and happiness. In ancient times, houses were designed around a central square courtyard, for better ventilation, a square plot was considered the most suitable.

Circular/Elliptical/Oval Plots - Such shapes are not considered good for the construction of houses. According to Vaastu, such plots would bring bad luck to the owners.

Rectangle plot - A plot having the length and width in a 1:2 ratio is considered good. If the length faces north and the width faces west, it would be considered more suitable. Such plots are considered to bestow good health, wealth, and prosperity upon the residents. Like in a square site, it is easy to design a square or rectangle-shaped house in such a plot with extra space used for trees, outhouses, etc, and hence is not wasted.

Triangular plot - The Triangle shaped plot is not good. Such sites are considered sites where there will always be a fear of fire.

Plots With more than 4 sides - Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon shaped plots should be avoided for the construction of the house. People in such plots always live in fear.

Gou-Mukhi plot - A plot that is narrow in the front and wide at the back is called Gou Mukhi. Such a plot is considered auspicious for residential purposes. Such plots bring prosperity to the house owners.

Simha-Mukhi plot - A plot that is wide in the front or entrance and narrow at the back is known as a Simha Mukhi plot. Such plots are considered inauspicious for residential purposes but are suitable for commercial purposes

Plots with corners cut - Plots with a missing corner should not be purchased for any reason. If you must, then do so with the proper consultation of an Expert Vaastu Shastri. Plots with cut corners are considered inauspicious.

Plots with projections or extensions - The plots with extensions in the North or East or North-East are considered good. Other extensions are considered inauspicious. Plots with extensions in the North-West, SouthEast, or South-West are not considered good, they bring bad luck to the owners.

3. Vaastu guidelines for site orientation:

Vaastu Shastra lays down guidelines to aid you in the selection of a plot with the ideal direction. As Vaastu is a science, there is logic and reasoning behind every guideline. As a Vaastu Expert, I have attempted to explain these guidelines rationally and scientifically, so that you can decide what you want to follow and what you don't.

Which is the best direction for a plot?

In the ancient text of Vaastu guidelines to aid in the Selection of a plot with the ideal Orientation are based on Common sense, scientific reasoning, and logic. As per Vaastu: All directions are considered good and each has its advantages. The only reason I understand is; in any city or town, there are roads in all four directions and naturally, there have to be houses on both sides of the roads. Also, the city looks more aesthetic if there are houses in all four directions. Hence, according to Vaastu, all plots are considered good. East facing Plot is good for scholars, philosophers, priests, professors, teachers, etc. The Logic- East (morning sun rays) is considered the source of enlightenment. North facing plot is good for those in power, administration, and those who work for the government. South facing plot is good for business class and for those who work in business organizations at the management level. West facing plot is more suitable for those who provide supporting services to society. The reason why Vaastu attributes each direction to a different class of people is that, in ancient times, Indian society was divided into four classes of people, based on their occupations. But gradually these classes became castes and there was very little social mixing between the castes and so people of each caste preferred being with their people. Hence their homes were grouped tog

4. Vaastu guidelines for site soil:

In ancient Vaastu text, proper guidelines have been prescribed to aid you in the selection of a plot or site with the ideal soil type. As Vaastu is a science, there is logic and reasoning behind every guideline. As a Vaastu Expert, I have attempted to explain these guidelines rationally and scientifically, so that you can decide what you want to follow and what you don't. To construct a building for any purpose, the land is required. And it is a fact the land has not been previously not allocated for the same. It has to be some or the other kind of site that has to be used. It should be correctly noted for what purpose the land was being used previously. While purchasing land, it is ideal to buy a piece of land that is most suitable for cultivation i.e., where the vegetation can grow. There are different types of soil based on colour- brick red, dark brown, white, red, yellow, black, etc. Generally, the soil which is good for cultivation like red, brick red, brown, and yellow soil, etc is also good for the foundation of a building. Whereas, black and clayey soil which is not good for cultivation is also not good for buildings as it retains water and can cause dampness to the foundation. It is advised to avoid a site with black and clayey soil.

The reason is, the black soil indicates soil that retains water and doesn't allow good drainage. It is best to avoid such a site because it will require a special kind of foundation and water-proofing which will cost much time more than the usual foundation. Again avoid a rocky piece of land for construction purposes. Land with too many rocks and thorny trees is not considered good. This is because it may be an indication that there is a rock below which will have to be blasted out before laying the foundation, causing unexpected expenditure. A land with a lot of worms should be avoided. This may be an indication that the soil is very loose and will not support the foundation well.

5. Vaastu guidelines for plot slope:

The plot may be identical in size and direction but the natural slope of the plot acts as the biggest influence in determining the overall energy balance of the plot. Before you buy any piece of land or an empty plot, it is essential to take a deep hard look at the natural slope of the plot. The natural slant does play an important role in the overall energy balance of any plot but just a slope and its direction must never be the only criteria for accepting or rejecting a plot. The natural slope of any plot underlines certain intrinsic Vaastu principles for the given site. Just like two houses are never the same, Vaastu Shastra guidelines believe that two plots of land can never have the same energy force.

Nothing can work against the natural law of action which governs which was the plot and holds its natural slant. Energy patterns of the natural slope of the plot can never be changed or corrected. While other smaller Vaastu conflicts can be corrected to some extent by following certain remedial measures or even reconstruction in some cases, the slope is a natural element that is here to stay.

Perfect weightage must be given to allbasic Vaastu Shastra fundamentals including the slope and the main directional axis of the land before drawing any conclusion. It is therefore imperative to check with a certified Vaastu Shastra expert before one finalizes the plot to ascertain whether the natural slope and directional are favourable or not.

Depending on the directional axis of any plot, there are certain basic Vaastu principles that can define the natural slope as favourable or otherwise.

Dhana Veethi or good compliance is given to a plot of land which has its natural slant towards the east and north. For a natural slant towards the

east, the western axis must be elevated and for the northern slope, the southern direction must be at an elevated level. A west elevated plot with its slope towards the east offers material growth and prosperity. On the other hand, an east elevated plot that has its natural slope towards the west causes loss of wealth and fortune. Plots with their natural slant towards the western and southern axis are also known as Bhoota Veethi meaning bad directional slants. A south-elevated plot with its natural slant towards the north signifies the growth of wealth while a north-elevated plot with its slope towards the south can cause loss of inhabitants and overall grief and sadness.

Land slopes towards:

• North brings in riches

• East bring good luck

• West brings financial losses

• South causes destruction and grief

Vaastu Direction Planets, Deities, And Colour:

Vaastu Shastra, a science of architecture, defines that there are specific colours that are fit for specific directions and rooms of our home. These colours are the colours of planets governing these directions. A table showing direction, planets, and their colours are as follows:-

Direction

North-East

North-West

South-East

South-West

All seven planets Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and two nodes Rahu and Ketu have lordship over different directions.

Colours of my home based on Vaastu:

• North-East: It is the direction governed by the planet Jupiter. The numerological no. of Jupiter is 3 and the colour of this planet is Golden Yellow. Northeast direction imparts excessive knowledge and education. It is the place for the temple and the walls of your temple should be painted yellow because the Northeast direction produces ailments related to the liver to rectify this defect Golden yellow colour is used. The corner wall painted in yellow is in the Northeast direction of the building.

• North: It is the direction governed by the planet Mercury. The numerological no. of Mercury is 5 and the colour of this planet is Green. North is the direction of any water source and hence, the walls of the rooms in the north should be painted green. Any defect in the North direction creates problems in speech and adversely affects wealth and prosperity which can be rectified by painting the wall in green colour. The exterior wall of my building painted in green is the North direction of the building.

• East: It is the direction governed by the planet Sun. The numerological no. of the Sun is 1 and the colour of this planet is Red/Orange. This direction encourages courage, self-respect, and status. Walls or curtains in the east direction should be orange or red in colour. The wall painted with Orange/Red colour is in the East direction of my building.

• South-East: It is the direction governed by the planet Venus. The numerological no. of Venus is 6 and the colour of this planet is Silver White. This direction fills the family member with lot of vigour and energy. It is known that the southeast zone belongs to the kitchen and hence, the walls of the kitchen should be painted in silver colour. However, in case it's a room, then it should be painted white. The corner painted with white is the South-east direction of my building.

• South: It is governed by the planet Mars. The numerological no. of Mars is 9 and the colour of this planet is coral red. This direction signifies, glory, post, reputation, courage and patience. The defect in the south direction reduces vitality and enthusiasm. Sometimes ailments related to bone marrow are also seen. To rectify this direction use of bright red colour is found more effective. Hence, this is the colour that the southern walls of our house should be painted in.

• South-West: It is governed by the planet Rahu. The numerological no. of Rahu is 4 and the colour of this planet is Grey. This direction provides us with stability and help us to fight with all sort of difficulties. A defect in the southwest produces nervous problems and incurable ailments like paralysis and polio. Unforeseen mishaps and accidents also take place. To rectify this defect one must use a grey colour. Southwest is the best for the master bedroom with walls painted grey.

building.

• West: It is governed by the planet Saturn. The numerological no. of Saturn is 8 and the colour associated with Saturn is Black/Blue. This direction brings success, fame, prosperity and bright future. The defect in the west direction creates Arthritis and diseases related to “Vata”. To rectify this defect use of black and blue colour helps to cure these problems. Hence, the western walls of the house should be painted blue or black.

‘VIBGYOR’ Colours In Vaastu:

In Nature, we see the following colours, namely Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red (‘VIBGYOR’), which are important tools to study Vaastu subject.

Our Planets, ‘Kundalini Chakras’, and even ‘Kirlian’ PIP photograph shows these seven colours. These seven rays are primeval formative forces of Nature. Their presence and their combination indicate tangible information.

In Indian Vedic ‘Karma Purana’ it is mentioned as follows:

“These rays that compose his body are omnipresent and illumine the limitless worlds in the universe and among them seven are the best and highest because they form the matrices of seven planets“.

Even Bible also says the same thing that ‘the Seven Coloured Rainbow is covenant between God and Earth‘. It confirms that these rays and their radiation make every tangible thing. As per Hindu beliefs, it is created by ‘Rays’ (the ‘Brahma’) maintained by ‘Rays’ (the ‘Vishnu’) and ultimately destroyed by ‘Rays’ (the ‘Maheshwara’/ Shiva’). We call these three qualities as Omniscience, Omnipotence and Omnipresence. This is the Ancient Indian Science.

The visible light is also a large spectrum of energy field that includes other familiar electromagnetic energy i.e. Micro Waves, Radio Waves, UltraViolet Rays, Infra-Red Rays and X-Rays. The rainbow colours are related to visible light forming a part of spectrum of light with a wavelength region. They are all a higher light waves having different frequencies and wave length ranging from 400nm to 700nm.

Sun rises in the East, and sunset takes place in the West. From morning to evening, these sun rays appear to have difference in their frequency range. Very early in the morning at they appear light and to be seen as pearl colour and with highest frequency as sunrises; this turns into golden colour and changes to orange later because brightness of light is accompanied with heat. By noon, these rays are very hot, changing the temperature level, (a mixture of gases and 70% moisture). During this period, evaporation of water starts taking place and hence we feel discomfort.

Energy Vaastu:

‘Miracles do not happen in contradiction to Nature but only to that which is known to Nature.’

Energy is defined as the capacity of doing work, but we are not talking about it in terms of the energy units like ‘Ergs’ and ‘Joules’ that we read in schools. We see ‘Energy’ in the flowers when they blossoms. The seeds also sprout on their own which is due to ‘Energy’. There are two types of Energy in Nature and they are named ‘Positive Energy’ and ‘Negative Energy’, i.e. ‘Constructive’ or ‘Destructive’ Energy existing in the Universe. This positive energy makes the seed sprout. Starting from microbes to the elephant, they use this ‘Energy’. Similarly, the planets move on their own with some energy but it is said the energy utilized for this rotation is negligible compared to our Universal Energy available in Space.

There are some ‘Destructive Energies’ also prevailing in the Universe, which do not allow the seed to sprout and humans to prosper. The worms, bacteria, and viruses do this destructive work. Now we are referring to some harmful energy in Vaastu in form of radiations, those emanating from Earth and the Cosmos. These energies work on the Structures (‘Matter’) and Humans or Animals (‘Bio-Energy Fields’).

Building-Biology (Energy):

Our building is not just a place of dwelling but it is like another layer of skin connecting us with the energies of the outer world. People live in it either partially (offices & factories) or full-time (homes). It provides security and protects our belongings. Further, it is in the form of a geometrical figure, similar to a ‘YANTRA’ working as a ‘PowerHouse’. It should provide good

health and support in attaining prosperity. It must help us physically, mentally, and spiritually. Here prosperity means should be providing sufficient financial support to sustain ourselves, making us free from external problems and guaranteeing peace to the dwellers.

(a) Human Life and ‘Building Biology’:

It means to say that we have many objects around us, which can be compared to the ‘life’ or the living cells in our body, having an enormous impact on our body’s chemicals and physical aspects of matter. This cannot be seen with the naked eye but can be experienced with time like the good and bad effects of them affecting the well-being of the human body. Similarly, a ‘building’ is not simply a structure, but it has ‘energy’ (‘Ojass’ or ‘Prana’) and must have the support of the following factors like a good environment; materials used in its construction like rock, wood, and covering items, etc.; articles placed in it, must have mutual acceptance with the persons living in it. It is called compatibility.

(b) Geo-Biology:

The existing Earth’s magnetic field, gravity, and sunlight are helping out biology, while the geological structures underneath the buildings, consisting of harmful minerals give harmful radiations, faults, fractures, presence of water channels, and conscious bones in rocky structures which affect residents living directly above them these radiations (which breaks the chemical bondage) with their ‘Negative Aura Energy’ may clash with our energy body. It means this affects our Cell Energy. Incurable diseases like Cancer, T.B, and Heart Attacks occurred due to blockages of energy in the cell and its functions. The remains of the dead and their bones sometimes believed by some as ‘Conscious’ may influence the human bio-energetic field, causing psychic problems. The

occurrence of unpredictable uneventful deaths and murders brings total turmoil to the peace of the residents.

(c) ‘Bau-Biologie’ or Building Biology:

It is a term used by German Vaastu specialists to describe a movement, to promote the use of healthy building principles as a means for better living and working place relating to the health of the occupants. Primarily it is a study of the pattern of the house, building, and its contents vis-à-vis their interaction with the human energy field. It is a field of building science investigating the indoor environment for a variety of irritants. Such an environment can produce negative or stressful results or positive or restful effects affecting the mental and physical health of the occupants. Some unnatural structural irregularities, broken items, metallic items, electrical EMF gadgets, skin or hides, or their heads used as decorative pieces may give Infrared radiation. Their negative energies may result in unidentifiable nausea, headache, allergies, etc.

Roles of Energies in Vaastu Shastra (‘Pranic’, ‘Jaivic’ & Solar Energy):

1. Cosmic Energy (‘Pranic’ Energy) :

As we know our Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees towards the North-East direction and it is moving from the West to the East direction. For example, when we run we feel the air coming in our direction. We feel the air. A similar thing happens to the movement of Earth towards the North-East direction vis-à-vis the Cosmic Energy (‘Pranic’ Energy), which comes in from the North-East direction.

This is the reason that much focus is paid towards the North-East direction. If this zone is blocked then the breadwinner will face many difficulties in life. No obstruction should be along the North-East zone; like bathroom, toilet, storeroom, staircase, master bedroom or even kitchen should not be placed there. The only prayer room is allowed there.

This area must be kept clean and tidy and preferably lightweight or with no weight at all. Keep windows open here in the morning for the beneficial morning Sun. Use this place for meditation and prayers. Face North or East always when praying. In addition, keep a bowl of water (clean water) and place it at the corner of the North-East zone.

The North-East zone represents the water element in Vaastu. Respect this zone as if it’s the heart of the house. This room can be used if you are not well and wish to get well fast and recharge yourself when you are stressed out.

Why there are some cases of houses being burgled or robbed by thieves while some are not; certain people get robbed; some dogs attack people easily and some dogs don’t and keep their distance. This may be connected to the energy level of people and their homes. When a person’s energy level or ‘Prana’ energy level is low, dogs can sense it and they may attack. If a house’s energy level is low, thieves might sense it and

notice it. How can they sense it? It comes down to their intuition and instinct and their feeling towards it. That is why in some houses we sense good vibes and in some, we don’t.

How do we know if a person’s energy level is high or low?

When you observe them talking negatively about people and themselves, gossiping, and always complaining matters. They are never happy about themselves and the environment. Such persons are generally having very low energy levels; so they will continue to attract negative things in their lives.

How do we measure whether a house’s energy level is high or low?

Firstly, observe the North-East direction of the house. If there is an obstruction, then the house has low ‘Prana’ energy. Next, observe the South-West zone. If there are no obstructions to the openings, then the ‘Prana’ energy has exited from this zone. The South-West zone should always be closed, heavy and with fewer openings, so then the energy can be stored. In a conclusion, leave the North-East zone free and open and keep the South-West zone closed and heavy and observe the results.

2. Magnetic Field (‘Jaivic’ Energy):

The magnetic field of Earth flows from North to South. We as humans can only observe this energy when we sleep. If we get bad dreams, cannot sleep at night, or sleep in excess then we may be or are sleeping with our heads toward the North. Our body is receptive to the North-South Magnetic flow due to Iron in our blood. Our head reacts to the North Pole and our legs to the South Pole.

When we sleep with our heads towards the North, our head and the North Pole repels each other, and we get disturbed sleep. Sometimes we may

even get migraine and headaches sleeping in this direction.

The best direction to sleep is towards the South. When the North and South Pole is against each other, it attracts and we get sound and blissful sleep. We do not have to sleep directly towards the South; it can be SouthEast or South-West too but never towards North-East or North-West.

3. Solar Energy:

The source of solar energy is only the Sun. It is a source of Vitamin D as well. The morning Sun is very beneficial to our human bodies. It is best to get morning exposure during sunrise timings. As per the Hindu religion, praying to the morning Sun God and chanting the sacred ‘Gayatri Mantra’ facing East, would be quite beneficial. Expose yourself to the morning Sun as much as possible. Take a bath in the morning exposed to the beneficial morning Sun with better absorption of Vitamin D.

The best location for the kitchen is in the South-East zone which is the fire zone. Cook facing East. The best time to cook is from 9 am to 12 pm. The Sun will be in the South-East zone to benefit from the Positive Ultra-Violet Rays from the Sun. From noon until Sunset, the immense heat of the Sun, which is not beneficial to us at all should be avoided. After noon, the position of the Sun will be in the South then the South-West sets in the West. This is the reason why our walls at home should be thicker along the Southern and Western zone. This is to prevent the harmful UV rays of the Sun from our living premises.

As we can see, Vaastu Shastra is not a belief or a superstition. It is a pure Science of the Cosmos. Nothing to be ‘believed’ or ‘worshiped’. Every principle and technique has its scientific explanation behind it, and it can be observed regardless of religion or beliefs.

Vaastu Shastra: A Logical And Scientific Approach:

“This science is complete in itself. Happiness in the whole world it can bring,

All the four benefits it bestows on you,

Rightful living, money, fulfillment of desires and bliss, Are all available in this world itself”

Vaastu is a logical explanation of scientific truths and facts. The Vaastu Principles are related to the properties (Natural Energies) of our Mother Earth. . It simply says that the sources of energies are to be open and the flow of energies is not to be disturbed. Vaastu Shastra prescribes desirable characteristics for sites and buildings based on the flow of energy (‘Prana’ in Sanskrit). Many of the rules are attributed to cosmological considerations; the Sun’s path, the rotation of the Earth, the magnetic field, etc. The morning Sun is considered especially beneficial and purifying and hence the East is a treasured direction.

Vaastu believes that there are essentially two types of forces, which are equal and opposite in nature. The interaction of these two forces is cosmically ordained and produces a third type of force, which is called ‘Bio-Force’ or ‘Prana’, needed for life to exist. One type of force is subtle and fine. The other is dark and dense. We, for understanding this subject, can call the first ‘positive’ and the other ‘negative’. ‘Prana’ is liberated by the interaction of these forces. Over the surface of the globe, these forces continuously interact, releasing bio-energy. When a structure is built over the surface of the Earth, it comes in the way of natural interaction. Both forces enter the structure where the interaction continues. However, the intensity of forces that enter the structure need not be the same.

Depending on various factors like levels, water bodies, door placement, etc., either the positive or the negative can have a stronger presence.

If the structure is designed in a manner that the positive forces override the negative forces then there is a beneficial release of bio-energy, which helps all the inmates to be healthy. Even after such a reaction with the negative forces, a positive Cosmic surplus is always present in such a structure, which is the ‘Supreme Being Himself. In such an atmosphere, life is smooth and happy with everything in life coming your way without any great struggle. It is a happy and healthy life for all the inhabitants.

If on the other hand the structure is built in such a way that the negative forces override the positive then you have a weak bio-energy field which manifests as diseases in the occupants. The overbearing negative field makes our actions, efforts, and thinking negative so that ultimately our whole life is ruined.

The science of Vaastu guides you about the rules you have to follow so that the structure has a positive atmosphere.

❖ Magnetic poles in our body:

The human body itself acts as a magnet with the head, the heaviest most and important part of the body, as the North Pole. If the head is directed towards the North while sleeping, the North Pole of the Earth and that of the Human Body repel each other affecting blood circulation and causing disturbed sleep, tension, and other connected problems.

It is well-established fact that the nervous system of the human body communicates with the help of electric impulses, thus producing an electromagnetic field around the part of the body. Muscles also

produce an electrical potential. Activities of the human body are primarily controlled by the electrical and chemical reactions inside the body. Any movement of charge, howsoever small, will produce an electrical field around the direction of movement. Again any surrounding magnetic field will thus affect the electrical activities of parts of the human body. Thus, the entire Human body is the net result of these tiny magnetic fields distributed within the human body, which is equivalent to a magnet matching the size of a human body. The heaviest and most important part of the body (i.e. ‘The Head’) behaves as the North Pole because ‘Head’ is the most powerful source of electric and magnetic fields in the organism and also that in the eye the magnetic field induction, is significantly higher than other parts of the body. Bedrooms should, therefore, be designed keeping this in mind.

❖ Source of energy:

Energy is primarily considered as emanating from the North-East corner and many sites and building characteristics are derived from this. Sites sloping down towards North or East from higher levels of South and West are considered good. Open spaces on site and openings in the building are to be more in the North and East than in the South and the West. No obstacles are to be present in the North and the East.

❖ Levels and heights:

Levels and heights of buildings are to be higher in the South and West when compared to the North and East. The South-West corner is to be the highest, followed by the South-East, then by North-West and finally by North-East.

The triangle formed by joining the South-West, South-East, and North-West corner of the site is attributed to the Moon, and the triangle formed by joining the North-East, North-West, and SouthEast corner of the site is attributed to the Sun.

The former is prescribed to be heavier and higher and the latter lighter and lower. Sites having a longer East-West axis are considered better. The diagonal connecting South-West and NorthEast is to be longer than the diagonal connecting South-East and North-West. An extended North-East corner is considered beneficial.

Vaastu Shastra is based on two important scientific facts:

1. Magnetic Property of the Earth and the gravitational and magnetic forces created by the materials inside the Earth.

2. Rotation of the Earth on its axis, and the centrifugal and other forces created by its movements.

1. Magnetic Property of the Earth:

Our Mother Earth was created from the minerals and dust from the lava of the Sun 4.54 million years ago. Due to the large content of iron particles present in the form of solid and molten states on our Earth, it has a magnificent magnetic property. The North Pole emits the positive magnetic energy and the South Pole performs the Negative part receiving this energy. Hence, our Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field all over its mass.

If we break a small magnet into pieces, each part will get its own North and South poles and start acting as an individual magnet. Similarly, when the Earth is divided into small parts as an individual property, every

division will attain a magnetic field having its own North and South Pole. As the buildings are constructed with materials containing iron particles as well, this magnetic effect is further magnified. Vaastu Shastra applies certain principles to gain from this magnetic force.

2. Rotation of the Earth:

The main logic behind almost all the rules of Vaastu Shastra depends on these principles: We are traveling along with the Earth with all our belongings in the North-East direction constantly at a speed of 1070 miles or 1670 kilometers per hour. The forward direction is North-East due to the inclination of the Earth. The division of the Earth, construction of buildings, and utilization of the buildings shall not be against this motion.

For example, suppose we have to carry a large and heavy box in a twowheeler (Bike):

• If the box is placed on the front side of the handlebar, it will reduce our speed and comfort as well as restrict our vision

• If the box is kept on either the left or right side, our balance will not be easy, and fall.

The only best option is to tie the box to the backside in a carrier so that our travel is very comfortable. This is the theory applied in the Vaastu Rules.

Our Earth is rotating inclined about 23.5 degrees towards the North-East direction and rotates on its axis without any rest for more than 4.54 billion years and also rotates the Sun without any axles, bearings, or motors. The weight we keep in our place should not hinder its movement. Therefore,

• Keep heavy weight in the South-West and lower weight in the NorthEast corner.

• Balance the South-East and North-West corners with medium weight.

A good example is loading a bullock cart, which runs on only two wheels and without any ball bearings. The cart man balances the cart by distributing the weight so that pulling it is comfortable for the bullocks. The Earth is rotating and rolling towards the North-East direction, hence keeping heavyweight in that direction would strain its moment.

How Vaastu Shastra works?

Vaastu Shastra works on three principles of design that cover the entire premise. The first one is ‘Bhogadya’, which says that the designed premise must be useful and lend itself to easy application. The second is ‘Sukha Darsha’, in which the designed premise must be aesthetically pleasing. The proportions of the spaces and the material used, in the interiors and exteriors of the building ornamentation, colour, sizes of the windows, doors, and rooms, and the rhythms of projection and depressions should be beautiful. The third principle is ‘Ramya’, where the designed premise should evoke a feeling of well-being in the user.

In addition, Vaastu Shastra is a complicated form of science put together by seventeen sages. Certain rules should be followed while building a house or a building. For instance, the building’s underground water tank or well should be situated in the North-East direction. However, if the building has an overhead tank then it should be placed in the South-West direction. In addition, more space should be left to the North and the East of the building compound and less to the South and the West. Open space should be kept around the building and if the plot has a road in the EastNorth directions, it is better for the inhabitants.

Movement of Earth:

To understand the underlying scientific aspects of Vaastu Shastra, we take into consideration the following principles:

Since the Earth spins from West to East and the North Pole is inclined by 23.5°, the actual North point of the Earth is situated in North-East and the South point in the South-West. The Cosmic Energy coming from NorthEast provides positive energy to the structures whereas the South-West gives rise to negative energy. Hence, efforts must be made to conserve

the positive energy coming from the North-East and also to arrest the flow of negative energy arising from the South-West. Thus, by keeping the potential high in North-East and low in the South-West, we can ensure an uninterrupted strong flow of positive energy in every nook and corner of the structures. This can be accomplished by keeping maximum open spaces and doors in the North and East of the plot and the least in the South and West. To keep the level of positive energy high, the height of the buildingwill have to bekept low on the North-East, East, and Northside as compared to the South-West, South, and West sides. This stems from the inward flow of negative energy.

The magnetic flow between the poles:

To maintain uninterrupted flow in the Earth’s magnetic field, it is essential that no pillars are erected in the middle part of the building and the number of windows in the North should be double that in the South, thus ensuring maximum utilization of positive magnetic flow coming from the North. Since Lord ‘Kuber’ is placed in the North it enhances mental development and one gets the strength to take the right decisions and achieve prosperity.

Nature and Vaastu:

The whole Universe is a combination of five basic elements. While making or constructing a building if all five basic elements of nature are considered, then creative energy, electrical energy, and magnetic energy are produced. In addition, it gives good health, wealth, and prosperity to human beings. This human body is a unique example of these five basic elements, e.g. a ‘Water’ element is present in the foot, an ‘Earth’ element in the knee, an ‘Air’ element in the naval, ‘Fire’ element in both the shoulders and ‘Space’ element in brain. If there is no coordination among

these fire elements then our energies weaken and it results in tension, ill health, and disturbs the peace of mind. All five basic elements have their respective results. A human being cannot survive in the absence of even a single element. By adopting Vaastu shastra all the five basic elements can be brought into your favour or be conducive to you.

Vaastu Shastra is the only way to make our lives better and secured from things going wrong. Vaastu combines all the five elements of nature called ‘Panchbhootas’ and balances them with the men and the material. Indian Sages and Seers found the following secrets of this universe and evolved methods and systems and confined them over the years as Vaastu shastra.

1. The magnetic field, gravitational effect, etc. of Earth.

2. The Galaxy in the sky, stars, and planets around the Earth and their effects.

3. Light and Heat of the Sun including the effects of its Ultra-Violet and Infra-Red rays.

4. The volume and intensity of rainfall and source of Water inside our Mother Earth etc.

5. The directions and velocity of the Wind and seasonal changes of our world.

Nine Divisions of a Land in Vaastu Shastra:

Vaastu Shastra divides a place mainly into nine parts aligning with the directions: North, East, South, West, North-East Corner, South-East Corner, South-West Corner, North-West Corner, and the Center.

1. North, North-East Corner, East, and center are the places in the Forward direction ofthe Movement (like the handlebar of amotorbike). Keeping any heavy weight in these places will obstruct movement and create discomfort. Avoiding heavyweight in these areas makes life peaceful and prosperous.

2. South, West, and South-West Corners form the rear side of the movement. Keeping the maximum weight at these places will make the travel comfortable and ‘In Harmony with the Earth/Nature. Acquiring wealth and safe keeping them is an important factor in life. For creating the free flow of finance and saving money, keeping heavyweight in a building in these areas are important.

3. North-West and South-East Corners are the two sides (Left and Right) of the motion. We can keep lightweight in these places and balance the movement. The North-West Corner denotes social status and the South-East Corner improves health. By keeping a balanced weight in these places improves the status and wealth of family members.

Sense of direction in Vaastu shastra:

Directions and orientations have great prominence in Vaastu

There are 6 directions and each of these covers 35 degrees of area. These directions are dictated by sunrise and sunset or Uttarayan and Dakshinayan.

On the eastern side, it is suitable to construct the main entrance, well, water fountain, verandah, storehouse, garden, and basement. This site must be kept at a lower level. The central segment, Brahmsthan is best kept vacant or lightly occupied. Care must be taken to ensure that no stale or dirty things are placed in this part of the house. In the southeast corner of the house, agenda kona it is advisable to plan the kitchen. Adjacent to this corner activities connected to cooking can be planned. This site must be kept at a higher level. On the southern side of the building, the master bedroom can be placed along with the bathroom, and on the southwest. This site must be kept at a higher level. A study room can be given on the southwest side.

To the western end, the dining room, well, staircase and gardens are appropriate. This site must be kept at a higher level. On the northwest side, food storage, an animal home, a toilet, and a water fountain can be provided. This site must be kept at a higher level. On the northern side, the main gate, verandah, staircase, well, water pump, water storage, property storage, garden, temple, store, and chest can be provided. This site must be kept at a lower level. At the north-eastern end, a medicine store can be planned. Further, a temple, well, water storage, water pump, storage, and gardens can be placed. This site must be kept at a lower level.

Vaastu Shastra Principles for a House:

These are a guide for designing and planning a proportionate, aesthetic, and beautiful building with the right measurements and are very similar to the principles of Architecture taught in Architectural colleges all over the world today. Five important Vaastu principles can help elevate the appearance of your house. They are as follows:

▪ Site orientation – also called Diknirnaya.

▪ Site planning – also known as Vaastu Purusha Mandala.

▪ Proportions of the building – also known as Maana.

▪ Dimensions of the building – also known as Aayadi.

▪ Aesthetics of the building – also known as Chanda.

Vaastu Shastra lays down guidelines on the ‘design, location, direction and disposition of the Interior and Exterior spaces of a House’ so that the inmates derive maximum benefit from the natural elements and are protected from their harmful effects.

Human beings and their dwellings, indirectly evident or in mystic ways, are affected by the motion of the Earth, and the microscopic as well as the macroscopic effects of the forces of gravitation and electromagnetism Some points to be considered are, gravitation and geomagnetism are the two forces which have a direct influence on the animate and inanimate objects on this Earth. Though there are attempts to incorporate the shortrange force of repulsion in the theory of relativity, gravitation is known to be a long-range force of attraction and the magnetic effect involves forces of attraction as well as repulsion.

Gravitational interactions, as per Einstein’s ‘Theory of Relativity, can be interpreted in terms of space-time geometry. Space-time is the womb of hidden and manifest events.

Man has no control over the time factor, but for a harmonious relationship with the cosmos, he can alter the space he lives in.

Vaastu Shastra defines and shapes spaces for designing dwellings that are in harmony with the Earth/ Nature, and are beneficial to the mind and body of the persons occupying these houses.

‘Dik-kaal’ (‘Dik’ means direction and ‘Kaal’ means time) is the theme of Vaastu Shastra. Space-time is its reflection in modern physics. Science has been part of Vaastu Shastra’s analysis and studies.

Modern research has proved that the ancient science Vaastu has a firm scientific basis. As modern science developed, it began to probe into the deeper levels of Natural Law. At each level, scientists found progressively greater intelligence and power.

In the last decade, modern physics explored the deepest level of the

Unified Field of Natural Law. The intelligence at this level of Natural Law is the source of all the forms and phenomena in Nature. The architecture of everything in Nature is eventually designed from here.

Natural Law has for the first time provided a building technology that will transform the way people think and feel; homes and offices by their mere design create good health, clear thinking, happiness, harmony, and prosperity for the family or business. According to Vaastu a Southern entrance may sometimes be inauspicious and can interfere with the support of Natural Law and brings negative influences to the inhabitants of the building.

Accordingly, there is an ideal place for the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, and the bedrooms. It is important to place each room in the house in the proper location according to its function so that one does not become sleepy in the dining room or hungry in the study. This is one of the many factors that are considered to ensure that every aspect of daily activity is in harmony with Natural Law.

Just as every part of the human body is properly placed and precisely proportioned, there is an ideal proportion for every room in the home and office for Natural Law to provide maximum support.

The latest research in Neuro-science has shed light on the fact that our Cosmic counterparts, the Sun, Moon, and the planets have a one-to-one relationship to the different parts of the brain: basil ganglia, thalamus, and hypothalamus. This natural tendency to align with the Cosmos has led to the concept of orienting buildings towards the East to gain the full support of the rising Sun.

Structural Vaastu:

We see that every house/residence/factory bears a shape or geometry in its construction. This deals with the structural geometry and its directional frequencies’ regarding the intensity of energy.

Nature Follows Geometry & Forms:

Two important points are to be observed vis-à-vis the interactions of shapes or geometry with distinguished energy in that direction.

1. If we observe anything in the Universe, we always see some shapes. In Nature, fruits and leaves have different shapes. However, did we ever question how they are attributed? It is a miracle of Nature. Even all rocks and minerals also have shapes and crystalline structures. Scientists call that Crystallography. So that all animate and inanimate objects possess some type of structure or ‘Shape’? For any object, we could see the outer structure, but inherently they are also related to the internal atomic structure. In Humans too, there is a hidden structure, which we call D.N.A. Our ancients also represented it as 3.5 times coiled snakes and the same is being used in the Medical Symbol. In an inanimate object too, the atoms are geometrically connected within it representing their shapes. Above all, there is a force between them and they are inseparable by normal means with their inter-atomic force or bondage. The secret is that ‘Outer Shape’ has a relation with the ‘Inner Shape’.

2. Different shapes of leaves produce different forms of flowers and fruits. When we separate a few petals of a flower from the bud form surgically then the result would be, the flower may blossom but it

would never become a fruit, with a perfect form (Shape). It can be inferred that an imbalance in energy caused disharmony. Even the ‘Yantras’ (Geometrical Forms) used by Hindu and Islamic heritage, possess some balanced structures, which are used for healing. Let us conclude that the structure and shapes have some power and the ‘Yantras’ have become ‘Healing Power Houses’, which in turn have a relation with human structure. Now we learn about shapes, which have something to do with human biology. The normal ‘Structures’ we teach about, in schools are the same as what we see in Nature, e.g. leaves, animal shapes, etc.

3. All the other structures are related to the multiple combinations of the above forms. Obviously, as per the above statements, these have some strong energy fields, which may help or disrupt human energy due to interaction in them. Most flowers are in the shape of circles and their leaves would be either rectangles connected with triangles or semi-circles. For sustaining life, they indicate the need for Water Energy and Sun Energy (Heat). Nature plays this role of geometry to fulfill its requirement. The combination of 9 triangles, 9 circles, one point at the top, and one square at the bottom makes the miraculous figure known as ‘Shree Yantra’, a geometrical figure that works as ‘Power House’ emitting positive energy is a great miracle created by the Indian Saints.

NOTE:

Some geometrical drawings with their combination make different ‘Yantras’. They were used by the ancients to give positive energy to cure diseases. Similarly, the building structures also bear geometry and they give positive or negative energy.

Structures and their Relation to Vaastu:

We all knew that Earth is a huge magnet. In addition, Solar energy is playing a vital role in each corner, of different structures on Earth. We also see different plant leaves have different structures and they produce different types of fruits or grains (cereals). They have different tastes, colours, and frequencies. By observing the movement of the Sunflower, one can understand what energy makes the Sunflower rotate toward Sun’s direction. Apart from it, we have Earth’s magnetic field, which also plays a big role. The dense magnetic lines are extended up to 40,000 miles above the surface of the Earth. They generate from the North Pole and reach the South Pole with greater velocity.

Many of us may not know that our body (bones) is also magnetic in nature. Our blood containing hemoglobin, containing Iron, cuts these magnetic lines and produces sufficient electric power for our body similar to the principle of a dynamo. This electrical power reaches the ‘Hypothalamus’ (motor control center of our brain or MCB) and helps the brain to function with electrical signals to all the limbs of the body resembling the way how a computer does numerous things which cannot be visualized by us. Cell phone waves were existing earlier than our knowledge. Nokia, Japan identified these in 1980 and everyone is using them now.

Some studies were made on colours, related to planets, ‘nava-ratnas’,’ nava-dhanyas’, ‘nava-moolikas’ (Herbs), and the human character related to diseases for understanding the provisions gifted by Nature to us for better survival. So also, houses, offices, and places of worshipping bear different structures and they shall have different energy fields. Based on that structure, location, and environment the fruits of prosperity also vary depending on individual frequency levels. Further, the energy relations are

based on longitude and latitude linear with gravity at that place, and an environmental position. Seashore, lakes, mountains, rivers, drains, meat processing units, burial grounds, etc. also play (natural energy) influences on the building, constructed close to them due to the ‘Aura field’. Our ancients have paid much attention to directions concerning their structures and overall energy levels. These unseen energies have been identified during recent years, as science leaped with further advancement.

Vaastu Principles And Their Effect:

The principles of Vaastu were formulated keeping in view, the cosmic influence of the directions of wind, the moon’s positions, the earth’s magnetic field, and the influence of the cosmos on our planet. The Vaastu influence on any type of building and human beings is like the cosmic influence of the Sun (solar system) on our echo system.

The system is an admixture of science, astronomy, or astrology, it is covered with the influence of the sun, moonlight and heat, the earth’s atmosphere, wind direction, magnetic field, and the gravitational force on human beings. It gives practical guidelines on site selection, its contouring level, the orientation of the building about the climatology and micro weather, arrangements of areas/rooms concerning the different activities of the proposed building, their propositions as well as rituals for successive stages of the residential building.

Vaastu also suggests the living conditions in house arrangements and also plant and machinery layout in the factory, business houses and also the placement of different activities furniture layouts, internal colour scheme, the sitting and working arrangements, business administration, raw materials, and finished goods, arrangement for their storage, the position of putting up boilers, furnaces, transformers, water boilers, and water storages, etc.

In Vaastu, the North-East direction is given great importance. The East is the gateway to the sun’s rays. The north is identified as the pole star, the roof of the world.

Energy lines have been found to emanate from the earth’s surface by forming a grid around the globe. This energy is oriented magnetically in the

North-South direction and the East-West Direction. The bioelectromagnetic field effect the human mind and body, since each body cell acts like a radio receiver with its vibratory levels. We are most affected by these subtle energies in our daily activities, our places of work, and sleep where the body is stationary for a long period.

The magnetic field of the earth has a significant influence on human life. The human body itself acts as a magnet with the head, the heaviest and most important part of our body as the north pole. While sleeping with the head towards the north direction the north pole of the earth and that of the human body repel each other, affecting blood circulation, causing disturbed sleep, tension, and other connected problems. The Vaastu strongly suggests never sleeping with one’s head in the north direction.

The effect of Vaastu is permanent because the earth has been revolving around the sun in a geostationary orbit for over 400 crore years due to the magnetic effect caused by its rotation. Due to the magnetic properties of a compass always tends toward the north. Since Vaastu is based on a permanent magnetic property of the earth with an inclination towards the north, the effect of Vaastu principles also became permanent.

It is more interesting to know that the genesis of Vaastu principles lies in the nexus between the earth and the sun. Since these two planets are universal and beyond any religion, caste, or nationality, the principles of Vaastu have also become universal.

The Environmental Principles Of Vaastu Shastra:

The shortage of technological discoveries in traditional architecturewhich has now made it possible to warm and cool any area regardless of considering the proper direction or geometrical shape - used to lead the habitants to make use of natural phenomena to provide physical and emotional comfort. Therefore, traditional architecture is always accompanied by a set of rules and principles that are to some extent based on environmental criteria as well as the dominant belief system of the specific culture; these two variables seem to be interrelated and in some situations dominate one another. Although assigning auspicious directions, auspicious geometrical patterns in the plan configuration, the concept of concentric zones, elongation of the whole complex, and the façade considerations seem to be religious in basis or due to cultural values, still, a great number of such principles in traditional architectural guidelines are derived from the environment; thus some common characteristics of vernacular architecture, such as the presence of vegetation in the buildings’ site, the use of local materials that create a micro-climate adaptable with human comfort and structural forms associated with the climatic positions, which can also be applied to other cultures with the same climate, are present as parts of all traditional structures. Vaastu as one of the most ancient architectural belief systems, similar to other traditional architectural sciences such as Feng Shui, also deals with the principles designed to make the most use of the environment and more specifically climate as one of its dominant factors. Based on the knowledge of the Sun Rays, the Earth’s Magnetic Poles, the Geopathic Zones, and the Concentric zones, many rules have been legislated in ancient Indian architecture dealing with environmental criteria that are now considered superstitions; however, applying them may be

useful in designing buildings in complete harmony with the surrounding nature. Based on the chronic approach to the history of architecture, the patterns of primitive constructions were the inspiration for the natural forms and features. Therefore, the surrounding environment has always imposed certain shapes and geometric architectural constructions from ancient times until the modern era. In contrast to such an approach, the followers of the cultural approach believe that the forms and patterns of traditional dwellings were the consequence of religious beliefs and the h on sacred realms. However, the architectural efforts of traditional societies are the result of considering many factors, including both environment and religion, often called by the French word, 'genre de vie' signifying all the matters of shelter, material, technology, site, defense, economy, and religion. Environment as the first manifestation of shelter has always played a significant role in the process of man’s evolution. The technology of construction as well as the geometrical patterns and sacred symbols are all derived from nature and its dominant laws. The laws of nature are basically beyond the physical tangible forces that used to constitute the principles of classical physics and contain all the intangible energy fields emitted from the earth as well as the other heavenly bodies, such as the Sun and the moon. The principles of ancient sciences of architecture including Vaastu Shastra and Feng Shui denote the great knowledge of ancient civilizations over the universe, its orders, and its analogy to the human body, which seems to be the sum of experiences of traditional societies over generations. Therefore, along with the cultural considerations, a great number of principles in ancient architectural design were a response to the surrounding environment. Its presence in the spatial configurations of the plan, its geometry, and directions, besides the arrangements of water pools and vegetation around the building construction, is highly evident through Vaastu guidelines.

The first geometrical pattern applied as the floor plan is usually a mandala from which the rest of the concepts and patterns will be originated. The symbolic patterns and geometries of mandalas are environmental in origin and picture the natural phenomena and their influence on built space.

The environmental features which suggest the shape and spatial arrangements of the patterns in the mandala, the Sun Rays, the Magnetic Poles, the Geopathic Zones, and the Concentric Zones are the most significant of all which together have dictated certain principles of architectural construction.

For example, the concept of the eight directions of Vaastu Shastra science and their associated deities, from which the four cardinal directions are the most important, is based on the climatic features of each direction. The Vaastu Scientists have perceived the effects of each direction in the human system over centuries and found out that proper orientation with the cardinal directions aligns the built space with the energy grid of the earth and brings harmonious benefits. It also allows the house to absorb energies emitted from the sun, moon, stars, and the earth itself properly. Further, they have observed that energy is poured forth from the center and the outer space to the inside through the directional lines which are called ‘Yonis’ or ‘life lines’ in Vaastu. That’s why in Vaastu the building should be built in alignment with the four cardinal directions. The categorization of each direction as either auspicious or destructive in Vaastu is based on the following concepts:

1. The principles of sunrays:

Sun rises from the east, passes through the south, and sets in the west. However, due to the 23.5˚ inclination of the earth from its

vertical axis, the east is not the first direction that receives the sun’s rays; it is northeast. The same application can be applied to the cardinal west. Hence if we draw an imaginary line from northeast to southwest, the southern half will be the light zone with positive energy while the northern half is the dark zone with negative energy. In this case, the southeast which is in the middle of the light zone will have natural light throughout the day and is recommended for the kitchen.

Sunray consists of visible white light together with invisible infrared and ultraviolet rays. Approximately from 6 am, the effect of infrared rays starts which is beneficial to human health and has purifying effects. Hence water present in the east, north, or northeast becomes bacteriologically safe without deterioration of the ingredients. From 11 am to 3 pm the effect of ultraviolet rays will be very high which is harmful to the body. From 3 pm until sunset the effect of infrared rays on heat quality will increase. That’s why in Vaastu guidelines it is advisable to locate the water pool in the north, northeast, or east directions as an auspicious for placing the entrance door and openings while the southwest is often suggested to be kept heavy and closed.

The morning rays of the sun are naturally cool. Gradually the rays become hotter. Sun is in its hottest mood during the afternoon hours while passing through the southwest. By drawing an imaginary line from northwest to southeast, the hot and cold zones can be pointed. Thus, the sector points are the best places for activities requiring balanced heat. Northeast in the middle of the cold zone is appropriate the praying or studying while the southwest as the hottest and most destructive corner should be kept closed. In

ancient times southwest was reserved as an armory to keep weapons.

Based on the position of the Sun in the sky during the daytime, the coolest location in the house is in the north direction. Hence the rooms with higher priority and importance are placed in the north direction. Cow shed and paddy storage is placed in the northwest while the treasuries are kept in the north location. Library also can be a proper function for the north direction. Daily Meditations or prayer activities are done in the northeast portion, as it is the coolest corner.

East offers the pleasant morning sun. In modern Vaastu, the bathroom is placed in this direction and near the entrance hall. However, in ancient times bathroom was not even included in house planning. As the southeast provides enough light throughout the day which has a sanitary effect, the kitchen is the most proper function to be placed in this corner.

The light and heat of the sun in the southern portion are excessive and destructive, thus bedrooms should be placed in this direction. While bedrooms are mostly used during the night the harmful rays flowing from this direction will not disturb the habitats. This portion should be kept high, dark, and closed.

The western portion of the house also receives negative sunrays to a lesser degree during the day. Thus, it is a better place for the dining room, while only a few hours a day will be set for dining activities. In this way, every function in the dwelling area used to have a suggested spatial organization in the Vaastu Purusha

mandala which was decided through the knowledge of the Sun Rays and their influences on human health.

Spatial organization of dwelling areas based on the position of the sun.

2. The principles of magnetic poles:

“When a magnetic needle is suspended freely, free from any outer influence, it ends rest along the north-south direction of the earth’s magnetic field,” which proves the existence of the magnetic energy field of the earth”.

The earth is composed of a metallic inner core of the same size as the Moon. The temperature of this metallic core is equal to the temperature of the Sun’s surface and this heat causes churning in the liquid outer core of the Earth. Based on the magnetic dynamo theory, the rotation of the Earth which transforms into a whirlpool of liquid, swirling around the Earth’s axis, converts the planet into a geo-dynamo. Such materials that are capable of conducting electricity are called metallic that have some free-to-move electrical charge. One of the elements in this liquid layer is compressed hydrogen which is in a state where some of its electrons are squeezed out of the atoms and are free to move around. This moving charge will generate a magnetic field and the faster the

planet rotates, the stronger the produced magnetic field. Therefore the planet earth has a strong magnetic field due to its fast spinning rate and the material composition of its liquid core which is more iron and nickel.

The earth has two magnetic poles which based on the compass seem to be steady; whereas in reality, they are constantly moving. Ephemeral undulations, known as micro-pulsations, ripple about the ionosphere and produce magnetic disturbances capable of reaching the ground level which is common and at the same time hard to detect. The Earth’s magnetic field which is also called the Earth’s aura protects the life of its occupants from the radiations of the Sun by deflecting the solar flares.

The north magnetic pole is near the south geographical direction while the south magnetic pole is near the north geographical direction. The force lines of this magnetic field travel from the north magnetic pole to the south magnetic pole. Scientifically this will provide the north geographical direction with antibiotic properties which can control infection. Thus north direction is served as the purifying direction while the south direction, has energy-giving properties which can be manifested as warmth. Therefore, while the northern half of the plot is full of positive magnetic rays, the southern part will be empty or depleted. The manifestation of such a phenomenon is used to decide the auspiciousness of the directions and their appropriate function in Vaastu Shastra guidelines.

Cosmic energy is abundantly received in the northeast direction and directed toward the southwest. Therefore the cosmic energy will become weaker while flowing toward the southwest. Northeast will

be the positive terminal and southwest as the negative one. Hence the shape of the building is crucial in the energy flow pattern.

Based on Vaastu guidelines, the northeast section of any property should be built lighter and at a lower level compared to the southwest section to receive the beneficial effects of magnetism at its highest level and to facilitate the smooth flow of magnetic waves without any hindrance. Furthermore, it is believed in Vaastu that the slope of the plot should face north or east which again is designed to make use of such natural forces. However, the lack of enough knowledge in studying Vaastu guidelines has ended in treating the concepts of auspiciousness as merely superstitious or religious beliefs.

The Earth behaves similarly to a living organism and seems to have an intelligence of its own. Based on biological discoveries, the oxygen level of the planet has virtually remained unchanged through the centuries and the tilting of the Earth in the northeast direction has helped it to receive the maximum amount of beneficial cosmic energies. Aligning any built structure to the axis of the Earth will generate similar effects; therefore the northeastern half of the plot will be full of fresh beneficial cosmic radiations while the southwestern section will be empty

3. The principles of Geopathic Zones:

‘Geo’ means Earth and ‘Pathos’ means suffering. It means suffering from the Earth, which causes stress in the form of illness. Geopathic means related to the Earth. Geopathic Stress is the term used for natural or man-made energies emanating from the Earth which are

detrimental to human health. Geopathic Stress is the name given to the effect on your body of harmful Earth radiation. Geopathic Stress, or harmful Earth rays, or geo-stress, orelectro-stress can result from natural radiation which rises through the Earth and is distorted by weak electro-magnetic fields created by subterranean (underground) running water, certain mineral concentrations, fault lines, and underground cavities.

The wavelength of the natural radiation disturbed in this way becomes harmful to living organisms. Man-made disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field include mining, foundations for tall buildings, underground transport systems, and public utilities (sewage, water, and so on). Natural radiation disturbs the magnetic, electric, and electromagnetic field of living organisms (our bodies, animals, plants, electrical and electronic devices, etc.) this way becomes harmful to all.

In other words, Geo biology is a branch of modern science that deals with various energy fields. It often falls under the category of pseudoscience and operates through geometrical patterns which are the subjects of sacred geometry. The cosmic energies are emitted from heavenly bodies such as the Sun and the Moon; whereas, these radiations are called ‘telluric radiations’ and originated from the Earth. The energy grid of the planet earth can be perceived as a web that links the Earth altogether and is influenced by many variables such as electricity, magnetism, heat, sound, light, colour, and matter.

The Earth’s energy grid works through specific geometrical patterns which follow certain symmetries. The grids meet at many

intersecting points creating a matrix that is very similar to acupuncture points of the human energy body. It is believed that the platonic solids including cubes, tetrahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedrons are the evolved geometrical patterns derived from the study of the Earth’s geometrical grids.

Doctor Manfred Curry first hypothesized the existence of a grid network of energetic pathways flowing from northeast to southwest and from southeast to northwest at a distance of 3 m to 3.5 m. This

Bio Electro Magnetic (BEM) grid is sometimes called the first global diagonals which is helpful to the growth of cells. The crossing points of these lines have double positive or negative effects that can be harmful to the balance of the body. Dr. Curry later linked these points with diseases and found out that sleeping on negatively charged points will cause inflammatory diseases while sleeping on positively charged points will cause cancer; thus, to remain healthy one should sleep within the grids.

Later, Dr. Hartmann discovered another pathway of energy flowing from north to south and east to west. These lines are called Hartmann lines with a spacing of 2 to 2.5 m which are essential for the formation of bones in the human body. Hartmann grid is bae BEM grid in the cardinal directions. The Hartmann grid has been known in Chinese geomancy as Yin and Yang; while the Yin or north-south lines generate a cold energy field that acts slowly and is associated with cramps, humidity, and all forms of rheumatism, the Yang or East-West lines produce a hot energy field that acts rapidly and is associated with fire and all inflammatory diseases. These lines are also dangerous for human health. By compiling the two grids in the Vaastu Shastra system, the square of the neutral

habitation zone will be produced.

The research has proved that ancient civilizations were aware of such planetary grids and used to consider these energy fields during construction. For example, in the Himalayas, the houses of Buddhist monks are oriented due to the BEM grids being placed in the neutral zone.

Besides Curry and Hartmann’s lines, geopathic stress can also cause an imbalance in the energy field. Buildings with ill energy effects are called ‘sick building syndrome today. Day describes ‘sick building syndrome as a common disease due to the improper use of materials and design methods in today’s architecture which can be reduced by reapplying the principles of vernacular houses. Sick building syndrome which is now so common and well recognized continues to be developed in high-rise buildings, “over-glazed and under-day lit” places which extremely use synthetic materials causing electromagnetic confusion. Their detachment from nature has made these buildings energy-dependent and unhealthy. Thus, the awareness of how buildings can attach to nature and remain in harmony with it seems to be substantial for human health as well as energy reduction. This syndrome, in general, includes “headaches, irritability, hyperkinesias, learning disability, fatigue, dermatitis, asthma, rhinitis, flu mimic conditions, and irritations of the bronchia, mucous membranes, throat and eyes which are all easily mistaken for normal ill-health.”

Negative energy exists as a cloud that can move into the building; “stress clouds are examples of the negatively charged locked energy fields”. Basically and due to the science of subtle energy,

negative and positive energies flow like water. They can be created due to various reasons such as the death of a person and can flow or be trapped according to the structural forms and figures. “Some of the symptoms of such negative cloud formations are palpitation or increase in the pulse rate, home ants and termites, beehives, dampness, coldness or hotness of a specific floor area, cats frequenting the house, uncommon accidents in the rooms or dogs barking at night while looking at south or southwest without any visible reason. These stress clouds affect one’s Bio Electro Magnetic level, which has a great influence on his aura or energy body”.

The rules and principles of Vaastu applied while in the construction of any property prove the existence of such knowledge in traditional societies which might not be completely discovered by scientists yet.

4. The principles of concentric zones:

While the square is known as a proper shape for building, the pattern of concentric squares in the Vaastu Purusha mandala is an archetypal pattern that establishes a potent, energetic and healthy effect based on the ancient teachings. This pattern which is found in many cultures such as Egypt, America, Europe, and Asia and works of many famous architects and artists is fundamentally composed of concentric squares which infinitely recede to the unseen center of the universe from which all the creations emerge. Pagodas and Step Pyramids are examples of this pattern in architecture.

In Indian traditional geomancy, one is the symbol of the creator or God, the infinite reality or the absolute unity which is shown by point in the geometrical expression. Bindu is in the center of the Vaastu Purusha mandala which indicates the navel is the manifestation of this sacred concept. Two, apart from its quantitative application, is the symbol of duality in creation which is represented by the yinyang symbol in Chinese Feng Shui. The Duality of Shiva and Shakti or the male and female forces is symbolized by lines in the geometrical realm and is known as the source of creation of the physical world. Three, on the other hand, is symbolized by a triangle and is called the mother which signifies the process of creation from the two abstract geometrical shapes to the triangle which is a complete geometrical pattern. While three is the connecting link between the sacred realm and the built form, four is the symbol of created objects and represents ‘the firstborn thing’. Therefore squares or rectangles were always used in designing the plan of every dwelling to represent the world of materialization or the realm of the mundane in which man is living while the ceiling was

considered the realm of the divine to which man should ascent to. The same concept is also indicated by Lao Tzu as the concept of creation which should also occur while constructing a new dwelling since it is the inferior example of the world’s creation. “The Tao gives birth to one. One gives birth to two. Two give birth to three. Three gives birth to all things”

Apart from the symbolic significance, based on the studies of Kumar, the square is the best geometrical shape in economical and structural considerations followed by the rectangle since it requires a lesser amount of construction materials on its periphery while providing a broader inner area compared to other geometrical figures. In structural terms, “square- and rectangular-shaped buildings can transfer the load safely even where the bearing capacity of soil is low, while other irregular shapes provide large contact areas more than they critically required”. The symmetrical shape of rectangular figures also creates a predictable behavior in terms of structural calculations and constructional methods which involve torsional behavior problems and stress concentrations. Therefore symmetrical structures can perform better under earthquake or wind forces.

Above all, based on the Vedic teachings, the geometry of the square is in complete harmony with human proportions as illustrated by Leonardo da Vinci since a human can fit harmoniously inside both a square and a circle.

The ‘concentric squares’ is another symbolic diagram that was applied by Vaastu Shastra specialists from ancient times in constructing their dwellings. In this diagram four belts of energy field

can be recognized; the center part is the Brahma Pada which is a highly charged zone called the ‘hot zone.’ Around the center is the ‘luminous space’ or Devika Pada while the third belt is called Manusha Pada or ‘conscious space’. The outermost area is the ‘gross material space’ or Paisachika Pada. The two innermost areas are the zones that should be open or constructed with minimum walls or heavy items while the two give birth to three. Three gives birth to all things”. outer belts are the place of human habitation and physical structure. The reason is that the energy of the two inner zones is substantially subtle for the human body. However, Ashvini Kumar believes that the inner area together with the outer area is not suitable for human living. Comparing the Vaastu Purusha mandala with the human body, these two areas symbolize the nose and skin from which the body can breathe. Thus, these two areas should be open and filled with windows to serve a similar function.

The idea is to treat the plan the same way as the human body. While the central parts and organs are delicate and sensitive the minimum pressure should be applied to them. This idea can be seen in the development of courtyard houses in Japan, China, and Iran. The idea of concentric zones later in 1920 was suggested by American geographer E.W. Burgess as the proper plan for developing the cities.

Relationship Between Vaastu And Environment:

Ancient sciences of architecture are a combination of rules and rituals being applied by the master builders or the local craftsmen. Although these rules were applied in almost every traditional culture which is also evident in their ritual behavior and folklore literature, few written architectural guidelines remained today and Vaastu Shastra is one of them. The main concept of Vaastu Shastra’s knowledge of architecture was to guide people to create spaces that harmonize with nature and with universal forces. The use of Vaastu which is rooted in Hinduism philosophy dates back to the Vedic period and appeared between 4000 and 2000 B.C. A section of Yajur Veda called ‘Sthapatya Veda’ which means the art of building, mainly deals with the principles of architecture and housing. There are nearly 32 books written on the subject of Vaastu from 3000 B.C. to 600 A.D. by various authors in the Sanskrit language dealing with the construction methods, special placements of the house features, and the rituals to be done in each stage. Vaastu in its general sense means the place where living beings dwell while in Rig Veda it has been applied to the home. Originally Vaastu is derived from the Sanskrit word, ‘vas’, meaning to reside. However, in ‘Samarangana Sutradhara’ the origin of Vaastu is defined as ‘Vasu’ or ‘the earth’ so that the mother earth and all the creations above it are called Vaastu Vaastu is applied to both the site of the building and the building itself. Hence selection of the site, architecture, landscape, and the science of the structures as well as astrology are all components of Vaastu science. Vaastu as a traditional guide to architecture aims to design buildings in harmony with the natural laws of the universe. “As Einstein Proved, everything in existence, sentient and non-sentient, is a field of energy. In this case, ‘Vaastu’ is referred to the pure subtle energy that underlies everything while ‘Vaastu’

is the manifestation or expression of that energy as matted, Vaastu is a science of working with energy fields that are used to guide the architects to design buildings in a way that their underlying energy fields are beneficially manipulated due to proportion and direction. Thus Vaastu views the dwelling places as living entities that nourish our lives, rather than a ‘machine for living.’ In this science, home is a symbol of the physical body which is interrelated with the universal energy field and at the same time a microcosm of its existence. According to Rig Veda, the architecture of ancient times was closely associated with religion, and building a structure was recognized as a religious act. It was not religious in origin but since Vaastu similar to Yoga and Ayurveda, denotes the connection between the laws and processes that govern the world of nature and the laws which govern the human body, it has been perceived as religious for the ancient societies. Therefore, its principles should not be interpreted as mythic superstitions, but rather based on the laws of nature and the surrounding environment. A scientific relation between Vaastu and the globally accepted climatological principles for residential building as well as I have to try to relate it to the green concepts of the present day need. The overview of my study is dependent on 2 very important variables that are:

a) Climatic response Vaastu,

b) Orientation of site.

Its importance, need, and outcome if we consider Vaastu shastra before or while designing and analyze how Vaastu favours or conflicts in designing any residence to understand how Vaastu plays a crucial role in the construction of a building and ensuring dimensional and character features of rooms in terms of length, sizes and breaths, together with

ensuring that the property utilizes harmonious cosmic energy to its fullest. How Vaastuis effective when the construction of a building follows both traditional and modern perspectives incorporating correct direction principles as suggested in Vaastu science. Considering the application of Vaastu is unavoidable based on the useful benefits it provides. At the same time, it is noteworthy that several other elements such as heavenly bodies, nature, and supernatural forces all exert their influence on us. The only prudent way out is to strike a chord of harmony with these forces to ensure a pleasant living. Vaastu Shastra is that Indian ancient science that provides guidelines to design and maintain harmonious living conditions in buildings. It, therefore, becomes imperative to understand and assimilate the Vaastu ideas into modern architecture. With the help of the case studies, the research article is intended to understand and emphasize the role of Vaastu Shastra and its practical applications.

Interpretation Of Vaastu Principles In Terms Of Green

Building Concepts And Climatological Aspects Of

The 21st Century:

The interpretation of Vaastu is based on the following grounds: Vaastu-is it a science or a myth? Has it got any relevance to the climatological aspects of a place? Vaastu varies from country to country. Has it got anything to do with the climatic zones of the world? Are Vaastu principles laid down keeping in view the wind directions and the human comfort levels? Can we relate the Vaastu prescribed guidelines in terms of the green building concepts of energy efficiency, building envelope, and water bodies? The Vaastu varies from place to place as well as the building typology as well. The Vaastu guidelines are mainly laid for the tropical regions of the Asian Sub-continent. Whereas the climatological principles are based on the different climatic zones of the world.

In this paper, I would like to derive a scientific relation between Vaastu and the globally accepted climatological principles for residential buildings as well as relate it to the green concepts of the present day’s needs. I will list out each principle of Vaastu and derive a scientific interpretation in terms of climatology or green concepts wherever applicable.

An Ancient Science lost in time?

Vaastu is being widely used in Asian countries of China, Tibet, and the Indian subcontinent over the ages. Though it varies from country to country, the main principles over which it is based are the same i.e., the five elements of nature namely the earth, sky, fire, air, and water. However, the scientific reason underlying the variations is the same. Now let us see the one-by-one list of the Vaastu principles and their

interpretation in scientific terms on various grounds of planning, location of openings, permissible slab-cuts in each direction, landscape and water bodies, and setbacks of the building in the plot.

1.Planning principles:

In a Vaastu-based design, courtyard housing is the best-recommended option with doors opening in four directions i.e. North, South, East, and West on the external walls with a central courtyard (figure-2). The main entrance to the house would be in the north or eastern direction. The hall or the main living would be in the north or east, the kitchen in the southeast, the master’s bedroom in the southwest, the guest room in the northwest, puja room in the northeast. In this system, the courtyard allows the hot air to escape upwards and outsides the lower openings to pull in the cool air thus creating a stack effect. The placing of washrooms should be in the south or west.

Now let us analyze these principles in terms of climatological aspects.

Considering the sun’s path over the tropical region the path is from the east tilted towards the south and sets in the west. In summer, the horizon is high whereas it is low in winter (figure1).

Figure1: Showing the sun’s path

Depending on the sun’s path the sunlight received in each direction can be described as follows:

As per the sun’s path, the southeast direction receives 50% of direct sunlight in the morning which is good for health and the heat is optimum to keep the food materials both cooked and uncooked in a fresh condition at room temperature. Excessive heat or cold which intern leads to moisture in the tropics is not an ideal condition for food storage as it leads to contamination. South-West, West, and North-West, which are the less inhibited areas during the day receive maximum solar heat The heat gets dissipated by night and is replaced by cool winds. This location is ideal for night occupancy i.e. the bedrooms. And the place allotted for the toilets is also on the south and west walls to facilitate the drying up of these areas which are otherwise damp and may lead to the development of unhygienic conditions.

North receives diffused sunlight throughout the day which is the exact requirement for living areas. Northeast receives the morning rays which

are believed to contain positive cosmic energy as per Hindu mythology and justifies the placement of the puja room at this corner (figure3).

The staircase and the cupboards /wardrobes inside the house should be located on the south or west walls which act as a buffer for the conductive heat entering the house from the external walls from these sides.

Figure 3: Vaastu mandala and spatial arrangements

2.Location of openings:

According to the Vaastu principles, all the openings in the house should be in alignment with each other i.e., the doors and windows. This demonstrates the linear ventilation method which was used before the concept of cross-ventilation was introduced. All the openings had ventilators above them facilitating the reduction of the heat pond effect at the ceiling level (figure4). The shutters of all openings were made out of wood, which is an insulating material that maintains the interior temperature intact, unlike glass.

Figure 4: Dissipation of heat through higher openings

3. Slab Cuts:

Vaastu prescribes the permissible slab cuts in each direction as follows:

Direction Permissibility

East Allowed

South-East Not Allowed

South Not Allowed

South-West Not Allowed

West Not Allowed

North-West Not Allowed

North Allowed

North-East Allowed

Table 2: Permissible slab cut in each direction

From the above data, one could easily make out that the slab cut indicates the increase in the surface area of that respective direction which intern leads to the maximization of solar heat gain (figure5). South, west, and their respective corners are likely to increase the heat inflow to the building, hence avoided.

Whereas north, east, and their common corner help increase surface area by capturing the cool winds beside diffused north light. The slab heights are also prescribed as the southwest part highest and the

northeast lowest. That implies that the roof should slope from SW to NE minimizing the exposure of the roof to direct solar radiation and the south wall which receives max heat is protected by the deciduous trees on that side.

4.Landscape and water bodies:

It is specifically mentioned that huge trees like banyan, peepal, amla, and tamarind should be got removed if present on the site as they are unauspicious, the reason behind this belief being the presence of such trees would damage the foundation and the structure because of its strong root system. The water in the north will lower the temperature of the wind blowing from north and east into the building. The placement of the water body in any other direction would lead to excessive evaporation in turn building up the humidity in the site. Another concept behind this guideline is that water gets heated and slowly than land. Supposing a water body in the south or west, the water gets heated up throughout the day and will heat the surroundings while dissipating the heat during the night, i.e. the bedrooms in this direction would become uncomfortable for the occupants.

5.Building setbacks:

The guidelines for building setbacks as per Vaastu are less on south and west, and more on north and east. The scientific reason behind this guideline is that the building is closely placed to the trees on the south and west boundary wall providing shade to the openings as well as the external wall surfaces from the harsh radiation in these directions.

Modern Scientific Research On Human Brain; Sensitivity

To Orientation In Space; Scientific Evidence In Favour Of Vaastu Principles:

Recent research in modern science has now confirmed the ancient understanding that our brain is sensitive to orientation, position, and direction in space. Scientists can now measure very accurately how well the brain is functioning under different conditions. This research shows that the firing rate of specific neurons in the thalamus changes in proportion to both the angular velocity and the direction in which the head moves. Scientists conclude that the brain can keep up with the absolute direction in which the head is pointing as the subject moves from place to place. Likewise, neurons in the hippocampus are found to be sensitive to position (concerning direction) in space. When one is facing East, the brain physiology functions differently than facing North, South, or West.

The conclusion is that the power of thoughts and the quality of thoughts are influenced by the direction one is facing. One’s sense of direction gets confused in daily life when one lives in a building with the wrong orientation, not built according to Vaastu Shastra, resulting in potential physiological, psychological, and behavioral imbalances of all kinds and strains.

This alteration influences every aspect of brain functioning and entire physiology. This natural tendency of the brain to function concerning direction is what Vaastu advocates taking into account when designing living structures. It says that the entrance to a sound Vaastu structure faces because this direction has the very desirable influences of enlightenment, affluence, and fulfillment. The other three cardinal directions also have their corresponding influences. The West direction for example influences poverty and lack of vitality and creativity. The North direction influences prosperity and happiness and the South direction influences negativity, problems, and suffering.

Modern Neuro-Science And Benefits Of Vedic

Architecture; Scientific Principles Confirming The Need For Proper Orientation Of Buildings:

Much like a compass keeps track of our heading relative to a global reference frame (absolute North), there are neurons in the brain that keep track of the direction that an animal is facing within an environment. These ‘head direction’ neurons provide an internal sense of direction that, unlike a Global Compass, can change when an animal moves between environments.

The principle of constructing buildings according to the principles of Vaastu, Indian Vedic Architecture, is borne out by both the ancient Vedic Literature and the modern scientific research on brain functioning.

In addition, it should be noted that the knowledge contained in the Vedic Literature is far more complete, scientific, authentic, and reliable than modern scientific experiments, because modern scientific experiments, through their objective approach, can only account for physical, material values, which do not and cannot directly measure the more fundamental performance of intelligence on its level; the level of Natural Law; the level where the holistic value of Natural Law and the specific value of Natural Law function in unison.

An Evaluation Questionnaire On Vaastu In Relation

To Environment:

The sample questionnaire was as presented below:

S. No. Questions

1. Which plot would you prefer most for residing purposes? 10

2. Which is the best direction for installing a puja House? 10

3. Which is the best direction for the main entrance? 10

4. Which is the best direction for developing a kitchen? 10

5. Which direction do you feel is suitable for the living/dining room? 10

6. Which direction is suitable for the master bedroom? 10

7. Which direction is best for the kid’s bedroom? 10

8. Which direction is best suitable for the guest bedroom? 10

9. Which direction is best for boring? 10 10. Which direction is best for an electric meter? 10

With the help of this questionnaire, a survey was conducted on 100 residents based upon which the analysis was being made. The survey was conducted on people having some knowledge and belief in Vaastu. They were given a questionnaire in tabular form with cardinal direction as 8 suitable options upon which scores were being given by inhabitants out of 10 points.

1. Plots preferred most for residing purpose

Conclusion:

It can be depicted that people prefer North – East, East and North corner plot most upon all whereas South – East corner plot is not preferable at all. This establishes well what we have learned from research that North – East, East, and North are the plot that enriches an inhabitant with peace and prosperity whereas South - East corner plot is the plot that bestows

inhabitants with poverty.

2. Direction suitable for Puja Room

Conclusion:

It can be depicted that people prefer North–East, East, North – West and West directions for installing puja houses as an individual or shrine must face either east or west for worship at home. This is because there are only a few deities like lord Kali whose shrine can be worshiped in the South. So, overall East or West facing direction is suitable for worship but South – West direction is not suitable for worshipping at all because it is the direction of planet Rahu and is suitable for ancestors only.

Conclusion:

It can be depicted that people prefer North-East, East and North direction mostly upon all whereas South-West direction is not preferable at all. This establishes well what we have learned from research that North-East, East, and North direction enrich inhabitants with peace and prosperity whereas the South-West direction bestows inhabitants with instability as this is the direction of Rahu.

4. Direction for the Kitchen

Conclusion:

It is well established that the South-East and North-West corner is the most suitable direction for the kitchen. This is because the South-East corner is the direction of fire and the ruling deity of this direction is Agni Dev. Whereas, North-East and North directions are the direction of water elements or liquid cash, and creating a kitchen at this place will create an imbalance among water and fire elements. Thus, this should be avoided.

5. Direction suitable for Living and Dining Room:

Conclusion:

From the above analysis, it can be said that the Living/Drawing room is meant for socializing with guests or family members among themselves. So, among all East is the most suitable direction. Moreover, the solar energy received by the North, North-East, and East direction keep the atmosphere of the house calm and comfortable whereas the South, South-West, and West direction is not suitable at all due to the impact of the environment not being comfortable.

6. Direction suitable for Master Bedroom:

Conclusion:

From the above analysis, it can be concluded that a South-West Bedroom in the earth zone gives stability. It also gives fair judgment skills and inner strengths to deal with important issues whereas a master bedroom in North-East gives loss of wealth, obstruction in all works, delay in marriage of a daughter when parents sleep in the North-East, they become very easy to influence. They lose their identity of power and discretion. Thus, it should be avoided.

7. Direction suitable for Kid’s Bedroom:

Conclusion:

From the above analysis, it can be said that the kids' bedroom should ideally be located in the South-East, North-West, South, and West directions of our house. Vaastu suggests that our child should sleep with their head in the east or south direction for a relaxing and peaceful sleep.

8. Direction suitable for Guest bedroom:

Conclusion:

From the above analysis, it can be said that the ideal location to construct a guest room is the northwest direction of the house. This corner of the house is considered an unstable area which is why it is best preferred for the guest room.

9. Direction suitable for Boring:

Conclusion:

From the above analysis, it can be said that water is one of the significant elements among Panchbhootas that constitute the entire concept of Vaastu-Shastra. The placement of a boring in a house should be proper to gain profits and overall prosperity. There are some set of rules involved in Vastu for the location of boring and it has been observed that a boring if placed in the wrong direction leads to numerous problems in terms of health, wealth, and prosperity. Thus, it is important to give water its essential space to counteract negative energies and make the environment positive. Therefore the ideal directions for water resources are North-East, North, and East.

10. Direction suitable for Electric Meter Room:

Conclusion:

From the above analysis, it can be said that one should place the electric meter, generators, and invertors in the southeast direction or the northwest corner of the home. He must fix the switchboard on the right side of the entrance door. He must regularly repair worn-out electric fittings and fixtures. One should place the geyser and other electrical appliances such as the heater and switchboard in the southeast corner of the bathroom.

Conclusion:

I have tried to unveil the green building concepts in Vaastu which may be the actual scientific reason behind the Vaastu principles. This is only an attempt made to eliminate the superstitious practices of Vaastu and various misinterpretations regarding ancient science. The public should follow Vaastu on scientific grounds with proper reasons but not involve in any beliefs which do not have proper reasoning. It should be kept in mind that Vaastu principles vary from region to region depending upon the climatic conditions and are not to be blindly followed or applied to all the regions similarly. We must follow Vaastu as a science but not as a mythwhich if violated will lead to the ill-being of the occupants.

There are many principles in the Vaastu Shastra science of architecture that are designed regarding the environmental features which through the lack of knowledge have been considered symbolic or ritualistic by the later generations. However, the observation of natural phenomena by the ancient philosophers leading to the discovery of laws of nature and their impact on human health is the root cause of the application of the principles of Vaastu and its similar systems of beliefs in other cultures as the sum knowledge, experienced by many generations. Since it is highly believed that the architectural forms have been proposed by the environment and as a response to its orders, which share similar patterns in regions with similar climatic configurations, the rules, and principles of Vaastu Shastra can be discovered and applied not merely as a superstitious symbolic guideline, rather as a proper example of using the architectural forms in the context of the environment. Although the technological advancements of today make it possible to warm and cool any area regardless of its climate, the proper use of architectural forms and patterns may lead to a sustainable design that decreases the rate of

energy consumption as well as making a proper microclimate compatible with human needs which can also stand in complete harmony with the surrounding environment.
