ACHIEVE DREAM
REALIZE
If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. —Henry David Thoreau
DEAR FRIENDS, Since our inception in 1995, Futures and Options has helped more than 3,000 New York City teens “meet success.” Those served by Futures and Options – many striving to overcome challenging circumstances – are encouraged to dream, to achieve their full potential, and to realize their promise.
John Bailey, freshman at Carnegie Mellon University, intern at New York City Department of Small Business Services and intern at Parsons Brinckerhoff.
As an organization, Futures and Options works to “meet success” as well. The last year has been a period of tremendous growth. In 2012, our programs reached 490 students, a 32% increase from 2011. Through the support of our corporate sponsors, we provided 213 high school juniors and seniors with mentored, paid internships at 133 businesses. With career-exploration field trips, job-readiness workshops, alumni events, and our new “On The Road” traveling programs, our programs are reaching an unprecedented number of highly deserving young men and women.
2
Futures and Options empowers New York City’s underserved youth to explore careers and guides them to further their education and become productive citizens.
Most sincerely,
On behalf of our Board of Directors and the young people we serve, we profoundly thank our supporters, partners and volunteers who contribute to our success, and inspire New York City youth to achieve their dreams. But the needs of New York City students continue to grow. Teenage unemployment is at its highest in 60 years. Without the professional skills and knowledge that they gain through actual work experience, our city’s teens risk falling behind.
OUR MISSION
It’s an ambitious target, but we aim to reach more than 500 students in the coming year. We believe the support of generous donors and volunteers will give us the resources to achieve that goal. And, together, we can help our students advance confidently – in Thoreau’s inspiring words – in the direction of their dreams.
Stephen E. Hessler Chairman, Board of Directors
Patricia S. Machir Executive Director
Please partner with us to empower tomorrow’s workforce to improve their futures, broaden their opportunities, and forge a path to success.
