Profile
LAB1 is a design office which focuses on lighting and energy related issues in buildings. The office was founded in 2015 by Faruk Uyan in Istanbul, Turkey. In projects which we involved as LAB1, we work on both daylighting and artificial lighting techniques integrated to achieve sustainable lighting systems. Our designs are based on the following ideas; Architectural context Functionality User comfort Minimum usage of natural sources Respect to ecology Energy and cost efficiency

Profile
Faruk UYAN Founder. MSc. Architect & Lighting Designer @ LAB.1 Studying PhD @ Istanbul Technical University Lecturer @ Istanbul Aydin University Faruk UYAN, Member of Turkish National Committee on illumination, graduated in Architecture Faculty at Istanbul Technical University in 2007 and gained a Master degree with his thesis which has been focused on ‘Sustainable lighting systems in buildings’. He is now studying on his PhD thesis about ‘Energy & cost effective renovation of lighting systems’. Since 2007, throughout his career Faruk Uyan, as a lighting designer, took part in many important projects such as an International Airport, Hotels, University Campuses, Museums, Health-Care Buildings and Residential Buildings.
Elif UYAN M.A. Interior Architect & Lighting Designer @ LAB.1 Studying PhD @ Mimar Sinan FAU Lecturer @ Istanbul Commerce University Graduated in Architecture Faculty at Istanbul Commerce University in 2010 and gained a Master degree with her thesis focused on ‘Lighting Quality in Work Areas’. Elif is studying in Interior Architecture PhD programme in Mimar Sinan University and she is also lecturer in Faculty of Architecture teaching “Interior Design Tecniques”. Since 2012, Elif has been working as a lighting designer and in her portfolio she has mostly office, hotel and entertainment building projects. In 2017, her project awarded as a finalist in Lighting Design Competition in Paris, and this project has been published in a book that is named “The Future of Urban Lighting”.

Manas Deniz CELIKBAS M.A. Interior Architect & Lighting Designer @ LAB.1 Manas Deniz gained B.S at Istanbul Commerce University in Interior Design. After his graduation, he studied Lighting Design in Architectural Lighting Design Master program in Hochschule Wismar in Germany. He gained a master degree with his thesis about ‘Lighting Design of Historical Area Hamburg’. He is responsible for lighting design projects in LAB.1 Lighting Design at the moment.
Enes Furkan GUCYENER Interior Architect & Lighting Designer @ LAB.1 Enes gained B.S at Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Interior Design where he was on the first ranked graduate. He is also studying on Public Administration in Eskişehir Anadolu University at the same time. He is responsible for lighting design porjects in LAB.1 Lighting Design at the moment.

2nd Place in SPACE - Low Budget
When is a structure, actually the landscape? When it is part of the landscape itself. The architect of Akbank Academy Life Centre, Cem Ilhan from TECE Architects, describes it as… “a project that does not try to be a building. On the contrary, it multiplies the green area by hiding its intense architectural program into the landscape. It hides the densely needed fitness centre, conference and exhibition halls, common meeting spaces, mini bazaar, and cafeteria volumes under a green plateau that is gently raised from the natural ground. Thanks to the architectural planning of the building, despite the intense program it contains, every place has been brought to natural daylight.”

Best Interior Design in Educational Buildings Mimarsiv Selection 2019
Istanbul Kultur University’s new campus consists of two blocks of 10 floors. Lighting design and consultancy services have been provided for interior spaces of the new campus where the administrative units, academic staff office areas, classrooms, conference hall, social facilities are located. While paying attention to ensure that lighting systems comply with technical standards, it was also aimed to create aesthetic environments for students.

After its shut-down in 1999, the industrial complex, consisting of the buildings which are unique examples of Russian Constructivism, has been left abandoned inside the city until its consignation to Abdullah GĂźl University to be transformed into a new campus with educational and administrative facilities.

Merit Award in International Projects Category 2018
Sumerbank Factory in Kayseri, built in the 1930s, began to re-use as a university campus by renovating some of the existing buildings after 2012. Electrical and Steam Plant buildings, which stand out as the unique industrial structures in the campus, were re-used with the function of the Presidential Museum and Library. Within the scope of the lighting project, daylight analyzes were carried out in the exhibition halls to select the glazing films to provide the desired dark environment inside, interior lighting designs and facade lighting designs integrated with the landscape areas.

Merit Award in International Projects Category 2017
The Airport Complex consists of 266 buildings with different functions and constructed on the site area of 12 million m2, including 2,5 million m2 area of runways, taxiways, and aprons. In the main terminal building, we handled the lighting design together with the interior design, and we placed each light fixture as an integral part of the interior. The building has a ‘bird’ shape; therefore, we designed the facade lighting to emphasize this extraordinary architectural form.

LAB.1 realized daylight calculations in three stages. Firstly, we carried out external illumination calculations for representative dates (four different times of day, and one day for each month). Secondly, detailed calculations were carried out for the sunniest month, July, with a detailed analysis of all the exhibits, particularly regarding specifying projectors. At this stage, we prepared 3d models and performed daylight calculations for all eight floors separately. Lastly, we made annual daylight calculations for all floors, without the exhibits.

Istanbul Sehir University moved to a new campus settled on 400.000 m2 area in 2017. LAB1 evaluated lighting design projects of educational buildings and service buildings. And we also produced new lighting design projects for the Student Center, Library, Administration Building, Conference Hall, and Landscape areas. We provided consultancy services during the purchasing and application processes. We also managed the renovation process of the existing lighting fixtures that had been used in the old campus to use them in new buildings.

The Malldova project consists of a hotel building and 2 office buildings. These new buildings, built next to the existing shopping mall, meet in a common square with the old building. LAB.1 prepares the lighting design projects for all interior areas, building facades and landscape areas in this project.

Akmed Hotel will open the doors as a museum-hotel that sheds light on the history of the region with lots of 1700-year-old historical ruins in the basement floor. LAB.1 studied for the lighting design of the museum areas and landscape areas.

As the lighting consultant, LAB.1 carried out daylight analysis in exhibition halls. The study aimed to control the amount of daylight to provide the necessary illumination level for the exhibitions in these two halls. Due to the architectural style and details of the building, window films were applied to the windows to provide daylight control.

The building had an office function previously. The basement floor has contained technical volumes and warehouses during the previous purpose of the building. Later, while the building was transformed into a university, we designed a lighting renovation for these basements. We hung colored plexiglass panels from both sides of the cable trays, which were in the corridors in the previous usage of the building. We aimed to make this corridor will be both colored and less complicated.

Hilton hotel in Erbil, Iraq, consists of a 23-story hotel building and a commercial building. LAB1’s service includes interior, facade, and landscape lighting design of the hotel building. The lighting design has been prepared that accommodates local design items and is compatible with the specifications of the hotel chain.
