IMPROVE STUDENT LIFE BY PATHS AND NODES: STUDY AND DESIGN ON STUDENT ENCLAVE IN GLASGOW Urban Theory Analysis and Strategy Instructor: Sandra Costa Santos Analysis and Straegy is group works (all drawings present in this portfolio are drawn by myself). Key area design is a further indivadual work Glasgow, Scotland Sep 2023 - Nov 2023 Introduction In this studio, we focus on the topic of studentification and study the student enclave around the University of Glasgow from a perspective of the urban regeneration of a post-industrial city. Glasgow sought to retain creative talent as an alternative to the job losses resulting from the industrial restructuring of the 1970s and 1980s. However, urban regeneration also faces spatial challenges that originate in governance models that are "splintering and fragmenting" the city into "cellular zones", where collective populations live, work, and consume within a secluded urban district defined by a recognizable perimeter: 'the enclave'. An urban enclave forms, characterised by an inflated housing market, a seasonal population, and tensions arising from spatial-temporal differences of experience in its residents. The “student enclave” is a real place but is not homogenous; it is composed of a coexisting and typically incompatible transient student population and a sedentary existing community. In this study and design, firstly, our group will study the area around the University of Glasgow to define an enclave that has formed due to studentification. This will then inform urban strategies to solve the problems resulting from the volatility and seasonality of the discordant student population and deal with the relationship between students and the locals. Then, following the group's proposed strategy, I will individually focus on a “key design area” to arrange functions and design.

Pratical Background Glasgow Student Boom Following Glasgow’s transition to a Post Industrial city where “a well educated workforce” was “essential in maintaining a competitive economy” the city endured a rapid increase in higher education students. According to statistics, the number of students at the University of Glasgow is increasing every year. The growth is mainly driven by the increase of international students.

Theorical Background
Sub-division of the Enclave
Improve the Life by New Nodes and Paths
1 The segregation of educated youth and dynamic geographies of studentication From this article we know the the reasons, process and results of evolution of student accommodation in UK. There are some types of student accommodation:
The student enclave of University of Glasgow can be subdivided into three sub-enclaves. There are differences between each enclave.
We consider using a system of nodes and paths to improve students' lives. The students and the locals move safely and more conveniently on the path and gather in the node buildings. Within the enclaves, this network can link the different sub-enclaves, the students living in the different sub-enclaves may be from different university departments, and the path and node building can be a place for them to meet and can have crossdiscipline communication. Outside the enclave, this network can connect the enclave with some public spaces like parks, providing places for communication between students and resident groups.
3 "Recombinant Urbanism" as an Analytical Framework The enclave is an enclosed area with a centre, a perceived perimeter, and its own self-organising system of order. Walking in the city is moving between these enclaves. There are attactors, armatures, dominant typology and bondary as the elements of analysing an enclave. From the study a frame work of conceptual models for analysis will be used.

De-studentification Depopulation and decline of some classical studentified neighbourhoods
In order to identify the Enclave, we overlap the elements of a city set out by Shane in Recombinant Urbanism. We have interpreted the boundary of the Enclave by layering each of these elements, and assessing where the most intersections occur. In doing this, we are identifying the area within the provisional site where majority of Shane’s identified phenomena are present.
Institutional actors identify students as group which possesses a metropolitan habits, willing to pay a premium for living

Amature
Enclave A The enclave A locates in the north west part of the campus. It is adjacent to rich area on the northwest. There are many commercials in this area. The extend of population mix is high, and student in this area lives in HMO. Enclave B The enclave B locates on the southwest of the campus. With a radical spatial order, it has an obvious centre, and some restaurants and other stores that exclusive for students are easy to see here. The student accommodation here are mostly modern PBSA, making the student concentration of this place is very high. However, the River Kelvin cut the enclave, reducing the connection between the student accommodations on the south and the main part on the north. Enclave C The enclave C is between the Kelvingrove Park and riverside development area. The Kelvin Way connecting this area directly, making student close to the park and campus even it seems a little far from the campuse. The commercial part ismainly on the north part within the encalve. Student here lives scatterly in HMO and PBSA.
Main Connections and Physical Obstacles between and within the Encalves The three sub-enclaves are connected by amature, streets and separated by physical obstacles. Within Enclave B, River Kelvin is the main physical obstacle which cuts the connection on two sides. According to our field research, only one bridge is still in use, but mainly for vehicles, and not comfortable for walking and running due to the narrow pedestrian. `

Path An integrated of exisiting paths, and proposal of new paths based on site condition that can work with the existing paths.
A Key Renovation Area as an Example This key space shows the rebuild of connection within the Enclave B. It connects several PBSA along the two side of the river. The current bankside space is divided into several segments by different PBSA buildings, a brownfield site, a under bridge space, etc. And there also an old abandoned bridge. The proposal of this site is by utilizing the abandoned bridge, rebuilding the connection of the bankside spaces, making the space continuous. This path can connect with the broad plan of the path system.

Transports and Gates
Based on the investigation on the site, we found that students and locals are likely to meet on the existing green spaces and paths connecting them, and they can have some interesting conversations, which is a positive way to improve the relationship between students the locals, as a solution to studentification. This map shows the green space and sport area and the main routes student like choose to run from their accommodation place in the enclave to those spaces. Node 1 Node 2
Proposed Site Plan
Node 1: Student Canteen The site chosen for node 1 is currently a riverside brownfield between two student accommodation buildings. It is proposed to be a shifting function of the student canteen and student night club here, so the objective users will be the students in nearby student accommodations and farther student accommodations connected with here by the new proposed path. The building here should have two main entrances, one toward the street, and the other side of the path toward the river. Considering the level change on the site, the site is lower than the street, the north entrance is on the first floor and the south entrance is on the ground floor. There is a path directly connecting them. The north entrance is set with an existing green space, forming an entrance space. The east and west sides of the building will be green spaces, keeping distance from the accommodation buildings on the two sides. Node 1 contains functions of the student canteen and nightclub. There is mass growth of students here in recent years, and PBSA here is a place with a high concentration of students. Based on the investigation, there are many Chinese students living here, and they report that daily eating is a problem that situation can be improved. It's not convenient to make Chinese food every day because of the complicated making process. Chinese students used to eat in a student canteen in China, which is a building with a big kitchen, and a big dining hall for hundreds of students to eat. I proposed to set up a canteen here. What is different from a Chinese canteen is that the space can be used for nightclubs in night. The nightclub is a locally popular space for students. However, many nightclubs in HMOs have seriously influenced the lives of local residents. So, setting up a nightclub here, near the river, away from the locals can solve the problem.

The Path
Path The path goes from beneath the bridge and goes along the student accommodation, along the river. On the space beneath the bridge, a toilet and washing place are set for runners to use. The path near the accommodation building may have noise that can disturb the students, so there are walls on the side of student accommodation, some openings are set where students from this accommodation area can join the running path. On the other side that faces the river, there are no walls but pillars. At some very narrow places, the roof will be carved-shape to retain the tree branches.

Ground Floor Plan
Node 2: Flea Market and Student Gallery The proposed site for node 2 is currently an underutilized riverside parking space. It is suggested that a building be constructed in the original B and C parking spaces while the A parking space remains. The ground floor will be open to the outside and lower than the street level to follow the site's natural level change. The first floor will be a gallery that follows the shape of the site and blends in with the surrounding trees. The running path will be situated between the building and the river to ensure that runners do not disrupt the flea market. And the path and the building have a joint where people can come to the building, participate in some activities or just go to the toilet. Students in the accommodation building will also be able to access the running path from this point. As for functions, The upper floor of the building will contain a student gallery, while the lower floor will be a multi-use space that can be used for a flea market on weekends. The flea market will provide a platform for students and sellers to communicate and engage in second-hand transactions. The student enclave will also be host to monthly second-hand flea markets. At other times, the multi-use space can be used for various activities. The Kelvin Museum and Kelvin Hall are located nearby, showcasing Glasgow's contemporary art scene. A student gallery can be established on the boundary of the student enclave to exhibit student artwork and provide a platform for selling their work.

The hospital serves elders in the Wuchang District. Currently, one part building on the site is Wuhan NO.7 Hospital, which is an old hospital with low efficiency and needs to be replaced. Another part of the site is the apartments of nearby Zhongnan Architecture Design Company, there are many retired architectural-related workers living in some old buildings. Therefore the new design can work as a replacement for the current building functionally and give people a better life. The design is based on architectural typology studies and some medical-environmental studies. The relation to nature is the theme of design and we decide the extent of how a functional space relates to a kind of "nature".

Evidence Based Design Study
Making Improvements Base on Investigation of Present Condition
"View through a Window May Influence Recovery from Surgery", Science 1984. The results of this seminal evidence-based design study suggested that natural views had therapeutic influences on hospital patients.Views of vegetation and especially water may elicit positive feelings, reduce fear in stressed subjects, hold attention, and block stressful thoughts.
Besides the theoretical researches, the design is inspired by investigationes into two near by hospital built after 2000, as well as the old community on the site. From the investigation some problems of patient using hospital and elder's living habits are discovered. Then some design criteria are deduced, in order to provide the patient and elder a better life.

Water in Living Space Wuhan was known as the "City of Thousands of Lakes" in the past, but in recent years many lakes were filled as a result of urban development. In the Site Design, water is largely used as a kind of natural element, as a response of the city scale, to recover the land feature of Wuhan.Water is a vivid, dynamic element in traditional Chinese gardens, it calms or ripples due to airflow, it changes its reflection color due to light and landscape. Due to its character of shapelessness and variability, water is always connected with time.

The Living Part Circulation Design There is a circulation system consists of indoor circulation, semi-out door circulation and outdoor circulation. The elder can choose their walking exercise on different circulation according to weather condition and convenience. On the ground floor level, the elder can get to any functional space under a roof (indoor circulation), like going from the community gate to their home. This is because it is inconvenient for elders to carry an umbrella, especially for those who need a wheelchair. On the first-floor level, an about 400m long circular corridor is set on the perimeter of the community for elder to walk, or exercise and communicate. This corridor is particularly for elders in the nursing home because the nursing home starts from the first floor.

HANKOW SOCIAL HOUSING PROJECT : A SOLUTION FOR TODAY AND FUTURE
Previous investigations on traditional Hankou Lifen residences have influenced our proposal of some small-scale shared spaces as well as the layout of units. This project has some similarities to traditional Lifen: it both has high-density housing, and it serves young working inhabitants. It is expected to tell stories rooted in the memories of indigenous people. In traditional Lifen, public lanes between buildings are dynamic and fully utilised due to the compact area of their homes. In this project, similar linear public spaces are added where people can grow plants, exercise, hang out clothes and socialise.
Spetial Topic on Architectural Design Instructor: Yogros Berdos Collaborated Work: Fu Zhouqi ( Design, CAD drawings, digital model and rendering); Li Xiaoyu (research on vertical farming); Zhou Liuyi (digital model and analitical drawings) Hankow, Wuhan, China Sep 2022 - Nov 2022
In the Post-Covid-19 era in China, epidemic prevention and control has become a common regulation conducted by the government in cities. People suffer a lot from the frequent lockdown of cities or communities when public activities on a city scale are forced to reduce, which might lead to psychological problems in the long term. Also, there are issues with the shortage of food supply. This Housing project enables people to use functions that are usually accessible in the city scale such as library, gym, swimming and public greenway. They can operate normally within the community during the quarantine. Moreover, the existing old warehouse on the site is valued as a precious condition. Its rooftop becomes a landscape farming garden in connection with other public greenways in the community. The warehouse itself is transformed into a vertical farming factory. Associated with the canteen and market, it runs food business to serve nearby residents in normal time. During the quarantine, the production can provide fresh vegetables exclusively to residents in this community.
The site is located on the boundary of the original German Concession area, where the urban fabric is fractured and shaped by various forces as the development of the city. The types of block textures nearby are highly hybrid, with historic public buildings, traditional Lifen residences, modern residences and modern office buildings coexisting. In such a complex context, our project is considered as a gentle transition ¡ª a combination that integrates existing typologies harmoniously and fits into the surroundings modestly.
From our analysis of population composition and research on social gentrification, which deduce the potential users, we come up with several unit types in modular systems as well as their possible variations. Different kinds of modules are inserted into the modular building structure, which makes the change of modules easier. In the beginning, it may be one basic module as one unit in order to accommodate as many people as possible. In the long term, to cope with the changes, this system allows its users to choose and replace their modules easily according to their needs.
Study on Building Typology The newly designed community in the block, with an existing residential building and a historic warehouse, fit into the block fabric of the zone by combining the historic building layout and modern building layout. The share of rows and enclosures is seen in the project, and a garden in the middle works like a park.

Solution1: Farming in Community Vertical Farming Factory for Vegetable Production & Farming Terraces and Rooftops for Leisure Greenway Refuse the abundant warehouse for vertical farming, which can produce fresh vegetables for selling to nearby residents on normal days and serve the apartment residents when the apartment is closed off for quarantine administration. Farming can be both practical and landscape. On the lower floor, the factory is still a factory, but the productions turn to be fresh vegetables and the process is automatically controlled by a computer; on the roof floor, there is a garden for people to rest in green. A healthy, natural, lively greenway connecting a series of terraces and rooftops Planting activity for units small farming terraces on every two floors along the existing circulation side. Closer access to farming pleasure on a smaller scale (8 units). Landscape greenway for the community. A series of terraces can lead upwards to the roof garden. A wandering experience around the community farmland.

Solution2: City Facilities Entering the Community by a Lifted Up Public Activity Layer In the post-COVID era, people’s activities in the city are highly restricted. So we intend that some public facilities in the city like gym, swimming pool and library can be exclusively set inside the community. Thus residents can still enjoy a normal urban life when the community is on lockdown during the quarantine.

Traditional Lifen consists of multiple row rooms in the same direction. It has a compact layout. Due to the inadequate interior spaces, residents living here spontaneously use the space outside for some daily activities. The Lifen Lane, between two rows of houses, works like a shared living room, functioning in multiple ways. From the photos, facilities like water taps, basins and chairs can be found, and residents like to hang out clothes to dry in the lane. Besides, people do many planting for fun, which can beautify the lane. Most of the plants are edible.

The building has a solid look stone base under several floors in a crosslaminated timber frame structure. The structure between the solid stone and upper residential floors are some panel walls and diagonal cross beams, and it is the activity level. The main structure is mainly static. However, the wood and steel junction enables it to be disassembled. But what might be changed more frequently are the interior wall panels and other furniture. They are selected by users and are designed for disassembly, unlocking a truly circular material loop where building components and materials can be reused and replaced rather than wasted.

DAZHIMEN ART CENTER: RENOVATION OF A HISTORICAL RAILWAY STATION Architectural Design Studio (6): Topic Instructors: Zheng Jing, Mike Findlater Individual Work Hankow, Wuhan, China Feb 2022 - May 2022 The Old Dazhimen Railway Station is a landmark heritage building on the edge of the old concession area of Hankou. The original building is dwarfed by new towers to its north and west. However, it sits in a prime location on the edge of an area of heritage regeneration, close to the metro and surrounded by thriving residential areas. This simple building sits on a major axis and consists of a square entrance hall surrounded by four towers which are said to be styles to mimic Bavarian castles. The purpose of this design is to explore the process of bring old buildings like the station back to life. The design focus to study the issue of adaptive reuse of existing buildings. The adaptive re-use of a building demands that the architect retains some aspects of the character of the original building but changes the function. ----- Architectural Design Studio 5 Teaching Plan

Project Orientation, Users and Building Function
From Old Entrance to New Entrance
There existing many art-relate institutions near the site. On a 1.5km way toward Wuhan Art Museum locates many art workshops and art equipment shops, which has already formed scale effect. And there are many schools nearby too. Turning the old station building into an art centre, with function of exhibition and education can strengthen the scale effect of art. The new Dazhimen Art Centre will gather functions like exhibition, education and recreation, serving for people nearby neighbourhood and whole city. It will be a platform for artists to have exhibitions, a classroom for nearby students to learn artworks, a sheared studio for all people to communicate about art and life.
The station's south facade is too close to the public street, which lacks some separation and transition. The origin gate should be removed, and some void space should remain for transition. The new addition only occupies half of the inside hall space, infilling into the original building shell. In consideration of the circulation and enough spatial connection and separateness, the main entrance of the gallery is set on the east side of the building. The passageway links the two sides of the site, which is a place to set the entrance.

Gap and Connection with The Origin Building The subtraction to the foundation with altitude difference will highlight the presence of the old building. By sinking the main exhibition space underground, the addition part has to minimise its visual interruption to the old building elevations. Therefore, the main addition part will use the altitude difference and stay below the old building. The space underneath the ground may arouse visitors¡¯ feelings about time. And by putting function underneath will leave emptier in the old building, where time and light can go in.

COURTYARD DESIGN FOR THE RENOVATION OF AN OLD BUILDING: GUOLIANG ART STUDY CAMP Realistic Project with University Teachers Project Team: OR Architecture + Smart Construction of Villages Lead Architects: Xue Chujin, Hu Xiaoqing Design Team: Xiong Yan, Luo Sheng, Luo Wenshan, Zhao Honghao, Pan Lingfeng, Fu Zhouqi, Li Yixin, Lu Gongwen Client: Xinxiang South-Taihang Tourist Resort Huixian City, Xinxiang, China 2021 - 2022 I was lucky to participated into a realistic design work as a team member of "Smart Construction of Villages" in the summer of 2021. It was an old building built in the last century and the client wanted it to be an art sketching base (finally it was called art study camp). We proposed that inside the building is the sleeping and living function, and the courtyard includes functions of shower, toilet, kitchen, and painting area. My work was to design of courtyard in front of an old building. I firstly drew some initial sketches, showing the basic organization and layout like where is the toilets, where is the kitchen, and its openness to the courtyard. Then in order to presented the design to our client in an easier understanding way and showing some construction detail, I built the digital model. Although the finally constructed work is different from what I designed, which I think is more clear and have more flexibility, it was obviously to see that my initial design was partly inspired and realized in the final construction.

This project aims to design a museum in Hankow district, considering the rich and complex city context that emerged during the Confession era. The city began its development during this period and over the past 100 years, it has become a very mixed context with various styles of buildings. During my visit to the site, I notice that many places were constructing new buildings with while demolishing old ones. I think it can be a museum collecting the old objects in the place, including the old furniture, old artifacts and other items that commemorate the past daily life of local residents. The new museum will use the material from demolished buildings on the area to reconstruct the relationship between people, old objects and old buildings. The new museum itself can be an exhibit to showcase the original buildings through its exterior skin. If we recognize the material richness of the city, we can consider the city as a museum, and all the buildings and objects within it as meaningful exhibits. To demonstrate these concepts, there will be a path leading into and above the museum from the street. As visitors walk on this path, they can see different perspectives of the city.
In many Chinese cities, old buildings are being demolished to make way for new ones as part of urban regeneration. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the loss of important historical material that made it difficult for people to look back and appreciate the city's past. The site I'm referring to is located in a historical area that used to be a foreign concession 100 years ago. However, due to drastic development over the past 20 years, many old buildings were dismantled and replaced with new ones. As a result of city regeneration and gentrification, the population composition has changed, and the number of local residents has declined. With so many newcomers and new buildings in the area, the memory of the city is slowly being forgotten.

Theme: Museum Building as A Deconstruction and Re-show of Orihginal Buildings on The Site
Add Pitched Roof Open Holes
The site's historical context is facing a problem of mixed building styles. The root cause of this issue is the use of different building materials. To address this problem, the proposed solution is to construct the new museum using the old materials salvaged from the demolished buildings. The original buildings will be deconstructed, and their materials will be reused to construct the new museum on the same site, as a re-show.

Climatic Response Design Wuhan has a humid subtropical climate, and the traditional architecture of the area includes a courtyard in a thick plan to enhance natural ventilation and lighting suited for the climatic conditions. The Museum has a courtyard with water, which serves as a restful area for people while promoting the ventilation effect of the entire building. The courtyard generates stack effect ventilation, while the pool is linked with the roof through several load bearing shading structures, creating a rainwater collection system.

Tectonic Study The tectonic study focuses on the place of the external wall which uses a sandwich structure. The re-used bricks are on the outside courtyard space. The courtyard paving also uses reused black bricks and tiles, where some moss can grow in some areas. The terrazzo slab under the roof provides a place for people to stay.

Museum is a place where cultures live in. Different cultures will resonate with other cultures when they are linked together. And a museum plays a role of holding that invisible linking bridge. Also, a museum is the terminal of the land where it locates on. The industrail museum is a terminal of this place, Wuhan. It will send and receives culture “signal” information, and host exhibitions. A building should look like how it works. With this design concept, the building appearance should consist of an aerial and a heavy foundation. The aerial sends cultural signals toward sky, and inside it is a gallery where people can have a good view. The material and construction form of its truss comes from the Wuhan Yangtze river bridge. The heavy massing foundation use brutalist concrete material, holds up the truss gallery.

PHOTOGRAPHY OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE GARDENS 2021 - 2023
From 2020 I began to practice photography, and later when I visited some traditional gardens, I found it is a good way not only to record but to study. Here I present some photos taken by me in Suzhou, Wuxi, Yangzhou, Hangzhou and so on, in a traditional Chinese garden way. Some photos show the detail operation of material, some shows the relationship between buildings and nature, some shows the frontality of a pavilion and some shows the beauty of light go through shapes. In many gardens I would like to use Panorama photos because I think traditional garden is about time, experience, and panorama photos that can include as much as views is a good way of showing that. Further more information about photography and traditional Chinese garden can be found in my personal WeChat official account: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/c2gEK44RoPYNyu6ZcSD8Sw
