About us Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation was founded in 1998 after she completed her presidential term as president from 1990 to 1997. She believed that the countries development is not solely responsibility of a governmental institution, but that all citizens should get involved and support the development of their nation. Therefore to abide to her believes we strive to run citizen initiatives in order to promote democracy, peace and social development initiatives.
Mission We are a politically independent and democratic civil organization that works for the defense and consolidation of freedom of expression and access to public information. The Foundation supports citizen initiatives aimed to promote social development, the exercise of democratic values, education for change, and promotion of excellence in domestic journalism.

Our Lines of Action 1. Consolidating Freedom of Expression We defend freedom of expression and the right of citizens to quality information. We support and develop leadership, professional, and intellectual capacity in journalism by strengthening democratic and independent press that promotes a responsible and free debate on the issues faced by the country.
2. Education for Reconciliation, Peace, and Democracy We contribute to preserving peace, reconciliation, and democracy by promoting educational and actions that help us create a peaceful and democratic society open to dialogue.
3. Actions to Reduce Poverty We foster sustainable human development by conducting activities in support of specific projects of public, either private, national, or foreign organizations that benefit the most underserved sectors focused on women and other vulnerable groups in society.
2016 Programs Nicaragua Media Program (PMN) We leverage the quality and excellence of the media committed to citizen participation through their right to freedom of expression and its defense as a cornerstone for democracy and public liberty. The Nicaragua Media Program supports the nation’s media by offering technical assistance and donations. Objectives: • Increase the importance of citizens for the independent media, the right to freedom of expression, and the access to public information. • Increase the quality and quantity of programs of the media we support with an inclusive and market oriented vision. • Equip and promote digital practices and social networks.
The Right to Ask DerechoaPreguntar.org is the first Website in Nicaragua and the second in Central America that helps the Nicaraguan society and government institutions comply with the Law of Public Information Access 621 (LAIP) in a timely and practical fashion. The Derechoapreguntar.org platform gives the institutions the opportunity to offer the citizens the requested information and their right to be informed through questions for the governmental entities. Influence in the National Journalism Excellence and Quality. Prize for Excellency “Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal” This prize was created in 2002 with the purpose of recognizing the work of journalists whose commitment with information has contributed to strengthening a more just and democratic system in all social, economic, and political aspects. We promote excellence in journalism as its main guarantee for freedom. This award is a recognition of the work made by the press in the supervision of public and private powers, the journalism performance in promoting human rights, the search for justice and universal values advocacy.
Solidarity Mentors We offer young people who have limited economic resources the opportunity to their secondary school education in good schools; we also support them in their quest for secondary school graduation.
