COMPREHENSIVE EQUINE ULTRASOUND DISTINGUISHED INSTRUCTORS PROVIDE AN IN-DEPTH OVERVIEW OF IMAGING IN THE FOLLOWING ANATOMICAL AREAS: STATION 1: ABDOMEN AND THORAX This station will cover the approach to ultrasound evaluation of the equine thorax and abdomen. Relevant landmarks will be reviewed, as well as probe handling and image refinement. A general overview of the FLASH technique for evaluation of the acute abdomen will be included. Participants will master the following skills:
AMANDA M. HOUSE DVM, DACVIM-LA
Thorax: You will perform an examination using intercostal technique and identify the pleural surface and the diaphragm. Abdomen: You will perform an examination in systematic fashion; identify the nephrosplenic space, stomach and small intestine; distinguish the liver from the spleen; identify the diaphragm and right kidney; and follow the duodenum.
STATION 2: BACK/SI
KURT SELBERG MS, DVM, DACVR
The back and sacroiliac region are a source of performance issues, avoidance behavior and, in some circumstances, lameness. The complexity and vast anatomy of this region can be overwhelming. We will break down the anatomy based on location. A step-wise approach to imaging the pertinent anatomic structures commonly injured will be reviewed. Participants will get hands-on experience imaging for perforation a detailed exam of the thoracolumbar articular facet joints, spinous process, regional musculature and ligaments.
STATION 3: CERVICAL VERTEBRAL ULTRASONOGRAPHY AND ARTICULAR PROCESS JOINT (APJ) INJECTION TECHNIQUE
SALLY DENOTTA DVM, Ph.D., DACVIM
Ultrasound examination and guided injection of the cervical vertebral articular process joints (APJ) is often indicated for horses with cervical osteoarthritis identified on cervical radiographs. These horses frequently present for neck stiffness, poor performance and/or ataxia localized to the cervical spinal cord. In addition to facilitating intra-articular treatment of affected joints, ultrasonography allows clinicians to evaluate the vertebral bony surface, joint capsule and surrounding soft tissues. This lab will cover ultrasound evaluation of the cervical spine, as well as landmarks for APJ injection and atlanto-axial CSF collection.
STATION 4: METACARPUS/PASTERN
RUTH-ANNE RICHTER BSc (Hon), DVM, MS
Injury to the metacarpus is quite common and can be career limiting. A survey of the structures of the metacarpal region and pastern will be done during this session with review of the local anatomy including the tendons and ligaments, as well as the supporting structures of the joints. Imaging will concentrate on technique and application of anatomy in diagnosis of common injuries. If time permits, imaging of the musculotendinous structures of the antebrachium and distal joints will be done.
STATION 5: STIFLE Sonographic evaluation of the stifle joint can be challenging. This station will provide the practitioner with a review of ultrasound anatomy of the stifle joint in a userfriendly, “take-home-and-use-tomorrow” format. Techniques to enhance imaging, including helpful hints and pitfalls, will be discussed. Participants will have a handson opportunity to evaluate this complex joint with personal instruction.
