Saturday, November 17 – 6:55 p.m. - 8:35 p.m. Robert MacKay, BVSc, PhD, DACVIM Professor, Large Animal Clinical Sciences and Internal Medicine, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a fascinating disease to study. It is also a frustrating and humbling disease to treat. Since its first recognition in the 1960s, research and clinical progress on EPM has stumbled forward in fits and starts. There have been discoveries of pivotal importance, to be sure, including the isolation and identification of the causative agent, Sarcocystis neurona, and the solving of that organism’s life cycle. There also have been numerous false starts, blind alleys, “miracle” cures and outbreaks of abject quackery. New agents continue to be studied, horse’s immune systems continue to be stimulated, and miracles wait just beyond the horizon. These lectures will bring together the best available evidence from the last four decades of research to provide an accurate and comprehensive account of where we are in biology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of EPM.

Dear Colleagues, It is my personal honor to invite you to attend the FAEP’s 50th Annual Ocala Equine Conference on November 16-18, 2012, in Ocala, FL, the horse capital of the world! This year, we celebrate our golden anniversary back where it all began 50 years ago at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company.
Executive Council
This year’s conference features eight nationally– and internationally-acclaimed speakers presenting 22 hours of cutting-edge continuing education in cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, lameness and surgery. In addition to our general sessions, Jack Easley, DVM, MS, DABVP, will lead “The Dental Examination Lecture and Wet Lab” on Friday, November 16. For one low annual fee, you can receive dual membership in the FAEP and the FVMA. Join today and receive the remainder of this year and all of next year for the price of one year. Your membership will enable you to also take advantage of the discounted member registration fee for the 50th Annual Ocala Equine Conference. Our merger with the FVMA has allowed us to continue the FAEP’s mission, “to provide the highest quality equineexclusive continuing education in the Southeast.” In addition, this relationship has further strengthened the voice of veterinary medicine in the state of Florida on legislative and regulatory issues affecting the equine veterinary profession. We hope you will join us for this exceptional continuing education program and also take advantage of this dual membership opportunity. I look forward to seeing you in Ocala!
