This 4-hour lecture/lab will open with an overview of laser technology and its uses in general practice, tricks to get the best clinical results with the laser you have or plan on getting, and some research on how it works and what it does. Following the lecture, students will participate in an interactive presentation of cases, protocols, and treatments on live canines. The program is open to DVMs (who examine the patient and prescribe treatment) and technicians (who perform the laser treatment).

This lab is useful for veterinarians at all skill levels when it comes to surgical extractions in the dog. Participants will be given instruction on surgical extraction techniques for the major teeth, including maxillary and mandibular canines, maxillary fourth premolars, and mandibular first molars. Using cadaver specimens, principles of proper instrumentation, flap development, alveolar bone removal and management, tooth sectioning, and tensionfree closure will be discussed and practiced. Participants will have the flexibility to choose which procedures to perform based on their own experience level.

Cranial cruciate injury is the most common cause of hindlimb lameness in canine patients. This laboratory will discuss the underlying pathological processes that contribute to the disease process. You will learn how to diagnose complete and partial cruciate injuries. This laboratory will teach you how to do a complete stifle exploratory examination for meniscal injury, meniscal repair or release, as well as extracapsular suture placement using isometric principles of the stifle joint.
Medial patella luxation is a common condition diagnosed in small and large breed canine patients as well as feline patients. This laboratory will discuss the underlying pathological conditions that contribute to the disease process. You will learn how to diagnose as well as grade medial patella luxation based on physical examination findings as well as radiographic changes that commonly accompany or contribute to the condition. This laboratory will cover common surgical techniques to correct medial patella luxation including - block recession, wedge recession, tibial crest transposition, antirotation suture techniques as well as soft tissue modifications.
Lectures will briefly review ultrasound physics and artifacts, and assist the participants in fine-tuning the image. Normal intra-abdominal structure will be reviewed and abnormal intra-abdominal pathology will be emphasized. Wet lab participants will gain experience in completing a routine small abdominal ultrasound examination, knowledge of normal sonographic anatomy and appearance of commonly identified pathologies. Some of the more challenging intra-abdominal structures to image will be emphasized. Interaction between the radiologist and the participants will be encouraged and the attendees will have an opportunity to address personal areas of concern in their understanding of abdominal ultrasound scanning techniques.
We will review how to effectively and efficiently perform an ophthalmic examination using the instruments routinely available to general practitioners including the direct ophthalmoscope, transilluminator and indirect lens. The wet lab will begin with a 30-45 minute power point review of examination techniques, followed by hands on help with live patients. We will also review how to perform ophthalmic diagnostics and when best to utilize them - including Schirmer Tear Test, tonometry, corneal staining, and corneal/conjunctival cytology techniques.

Additionally, a Foley catheter can be placed either directly, or by an antegrade-retrograde method using a red rubber catheter as a guide. We all know how challenging feline dental extractions can be; and when it comes to dental extractions, cats aren’t small dogs! This lab will focus on the techniques, equipment and instruments that will ensure successful and complication-free feline extractions and crown amputations. Using feline cadaver specimens, participants will be instructed on how to surgically extract the maxillary and mandibular canines, maxillary fourth premolar, and mandibular first molar, as well as crown amputation of the mandibular canine and third premolar with tension-free flap closure.
This is a 1-hour lecture discussing safety, terminology, normal and abnormal anatomy, basic pathology, and mounting of dental radiographs followed by hands-on training. Learn how to obtain a diagnostic intraoral radiograph using the latest state-of-the-art equipment taught by some of the most highly trained veterinary technicians in veterinary dentistry. There is a low teacher-tostudent ratio to ensure everyone takes all the images necessary to obtain full mouth radiographs of a dog and cat using cadaver heads.
A 1-hour lecture explains instrument handling, cleaning and sharpening, the importance of proper cleaning technique, probing and charting. Following is a detailed, hands-on wet lab that provides instruction on the proper way to do a complete dental prophylaxis and oral examination including accurate charting. There is a low teacher-to-student ratio to ensure everyone receives individual instruction while probing, cleaning and charting the mouth of a dog and cat using cadaver heads.

Cytology is a fun and helpful way to provide immediate information important for patient management. This presentation provides indications, techniques and basic principles of cytology from a clinical pathologist and oncologist’s viewpoint. There will be an initial power point presentation on cytology overview. Immediately following the instructional presentation, attendees will be divided into two groups and rotate thru microscope cases. Clinical cases will also be discussed in an open format session. Each attendee will receive the following: There will be a 2 hour power point presentation on cytology overview. Attendees will then be divided into groups and rotate thru stations listed below. Microscopes: Microscopes will be set up with cases and sample slides for review. There will be 10 microscopes provided by Jorgensen. Cases will include 1. Mast cell tumor 2. Histiocytoma 3. Lymphoma 4. Melanoma 5. Anal Sac carcinoma 6. Squamous cell carcinoma 7. Hemangiopericytoma 8. Splenic 9. Histiocytic Sarcoma and 10. Plasma cell tumor. Next to each microscope will be a laminated report corresponding to each case which includes cytological interpretation in detail and photomicrographs of key cellular features.
This workshop is designed to provide attendees with information necessary to interpret clinical findings, fine needle aspirates and histopathology results from dogs with mast cell tumors to determine what additional forms of diagnostics are necessary to provide prognostic and therapeutic recommendations. It will be given in a combination of didactic, hands-on and interactive case discussion format. Microscopes will be available for hands-on opportunity and will feature 10 different clinical cases of patients with mast cell tumors and their cytological interpretation. The workshop will culminate with a case discussion which will utilize 6 case examples from dogs with mast cell tumors. Attendees will be asked to review the histopathology result for each case then formulate a plan for further immunohistochemistry testing and treatment based upon these results.
