Dr. Rachel Kelly Klemawesch joined the FVMA Board of Directors in November, as the District 4 Representative. She is President-elect of the Pinellas County VMA, was a member of the Hillsborough County Animal Advisory Committee in 2010-2011, and serves on the FVMA’s Animal Welfare Committee. District 4 is comprised of Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Sumter Counties in West Central Florida. Local veterinary associations in District 4 include Hillsborough VMA, Pasco Hernando VMA, Pinellas County VMA and Suncoast VMA. Dr. Klemawesch holds two degrees from Auburn University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Language (German), graduating Cum Laude in 1992, and then received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1996 from the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Klemawesch is presently Medical Director and associate Veterinarian at Northeast Animal Hospital in St. Petersburg, a small animal clinic with a patient
profile that includes dogs, cats, other small mammals, birds, and reptiles. She is a graduate of the North American Veterinary Post Graduate Institute's Intermediate and Advanced Animal Behavior Programs, and has been applying her expertise in this field through her work with pets within hospitals and on a referral basis since 2006. When asked, the newest FVMA Board member says: “I wanted to become a veterinarian from the time I was six years old, and began volunteering/working in veterinary hospitals in high school. I grew up as a "military brat" - living in many different states and overseas, and actually graduated from high school in Germany.” She is happily married with a 19 month old daughter and is expecting a new baby any day now. Dr. Klemawesch confesses that she has great appreciation for her colleagues who serve the profession and would like to find ways to get new veterinarians involved in organized medicine. She says, “I have only become involved
in organized veterinary medicine and community animal related issues in recent years. In the early years of my career, I was absorbed in developing clinical skills and did not realize the great need that exists for veterinarians to volunteer their time and energy to important issues that we face as a profession. The more I learn and become involved, the more I appreciate the veterinarians who have come before me (many of whom are still very actively involved in these issues on local, state, and national levels) for their dedication and sacrifice of personal time. I would like to find ways to get newer veterinarians involved in their organizations and realize not only that their voices can be heard, but they can have a significant impact on our collective future with their efforts. I find the process professionally and personally rewarding, and enjoy interactions with and perspectives of veterinarians that I might not otherwise have met.” www.fvma.org | 7

Unlock powErFUl parasiTE proTEcTion trifexis (spinosad + milbemycin oxime) ÂŽ
is the once-monthly, beef-flavored tablet that offers three types of parasite protection.
prevents heartworm disease Kills fleas | prevents infestations treats hookworm, roundworm and whipworm infections
clients can save up to $25 by mail-in rebate. For more information, visit trifexis.com/vet, see your Elanco representative or call 888-545-5973.
Important Safety InformatIon Serious adverse reactions have been reported following concomitant extra-label use of ivermectin with spinosad alone, one of the components of Trifexis chewable tablets. Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Trifexis, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection. Use with caution in breeding females. The safe use of Trifexis in breeding males has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. The most common adverse reactions recorded in clinical trials were vomiting, pruritus, lethargy and diarrhea. To ensure heartworm prevention, observe your dog for one hour after administration. If vomiting occurs within one hour of administration, redose with another full dose. Puppies less than 14 weeks of age may experience a higher rate of vomiting. For product label, including complete safety information, see page 28. Š2013 Elanco TFX00477

The Cat Thyroid Center “Dr. Ott and his team are true professionals who always go above and beyond in the care of both the patient and the patient’s people. The Cat Thyroid Center has treated two of my family members and both of these demanding ladies had absolutely no complaints at the level of service and attention they received during their I-131 spa treatment.” -Dr. William Walsh, A Pet’s Friend Animal Hospital, Venice, FL “Over the years I have referred literally dozens of hyperthyroid cats to the Cat Thyroid Center. Every client I have sent has been very impressed and happy with the service they and their pet has received. The feedback I get is always positive, and I will continue to refer my clients to Dr. Ott for I-131 treatment.” -Dr. Andrew King, Cat Hospital of Sarasota, Sarasota, FL “The Cat Thyroid Center offers excellent medical care and makes sure the patient and client feel at home. Dr. Ott does an amazing job following up with cases both with the owners and with me. He is always available when any questions arise. His compassion and knowledge make the Cat Thyroid Center superior when it comes to treatment and as a result we highly recommend him.” -Dr. Sherri Basso, The Cat Hospital of Orlando, Orlando, FL
