DISTINGUISHED WET LAB INSTRUCTORS The Comprehensive Ultrasound Imaging Wet Lab provides an in-depth overview of imaging in the following anatomical areas: Pastern and Foot, Proximal Suspensory Ligament, Thorax/Abdomen, Stifle, Metacarpal Region.

STATION 1: PASTERN AND FOOT

ARIC ADAMS DVM, DACVS

With the widespread use of MRI for the diagnosis of soft tissue injuries in horses, some equine lameness diagnosticians have forgotten the value of ultrasonographic examination of the pastern and foot. Although the complex anatomy of this region can be intimidating when interpreting ultrasonographic abnormalities, a welltrained ultrasonographer can gather a vast amount of information regarding the soft tissue structures in the pastern and, to a lesser degree, in the foot. In this wet lab, we will review pertinent anatomy of the pastern and foot. You will get hands-on experience performing a structured, detailed examination of the pastern and foot.

Emphasis will be placed on the visualization of anatomic structures that are most commonly injured, and the ability to discern artifact from actual lesions.

STATION 2: PROXIMAL SUSPENSORY LIGAMENT

TIMOTHY LYNCH DVM, DACVS, DACVSMR

The proximal suspensory ligament is often implicated in both front and rear limb lameness. Ultrasound examination of the proximal suspensory ligament is useful in helping diagnose proximal suspensory ligaments injuries. However, ultrasound of the proximal suspensory ligament, especially in the rear limb, can be difficult and result in less than diagnostic images. Images of the proximal suspensory ligament are dependent on proper preparation of the patient, equipment set up, and operator experience. Participants in this wet lab will examine the proximal suspensory ligament, and learn tips and tricks to produce diagnostic images of the proximal suspensory ligament.

STATION 3: THORAX/ABDOMEN This station will cover the approach to ultrasound evaluation of the equine thorax and abdomen. Relevant landmarks will be reviewed, as well as probe handling and image refinement. A general overview of the FLASH technique for evaluation of the acute abdomen will be included. Participants will master the following skills:

Thorax: Performing examination using intercostal technique; Identify the pleural surface; Identify the diaphragm Abdomen: Performing examination in systematic fashion; Identify the nephrosplenic space; Identify the stomach; Identify small intestine; Distinguish liver from spleen; Identify the diaphragm; Identify the right kidney; Follow the duodenum

STATION 4: STIFLE Attendees will learn the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the stifle. The emphasis will be on imaging the joint structures, ligaments and menisci that are commonly injured.

STATION 5: METACARPAL REGION Examination of the metacarpal region from the accessory carpal bone to the ergot, with specific review of the flexor tendons, the digital sheath, and the ligamentous structures. If time permits, we will examine the fetlock, with particular interest in the collateral ligaments.

The FAEP strongly recommends that you register in advance for the 55th Annual Ocala Equine Conference. Registration is required for all aspects of the meeting. Your registration covers all CE sessions, access to the Exhibit Hall, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, dinner on Saturday, all breaks, social events, and conference proceedings. Advance registrations are taken at the FAEP office until December 22, 2017. After this date, a late registration fee of $50.00 will be added to all registrations, including on-site registrations.

On-site registration will be available at the Hilton Ocala at the FAEP Registration Desk.

Confirmation A confirmation of your registration will be emailed to you from the FAEP. Please contact an FAEP representative if any information in the confirmation is incorrect for timely correction of the error.

Cancellation Policy Cancellation deadline for a full refund of registration fees minus a $50 administrative charge is December 22, 2017. Cancellations should be submitted to the FAEP in writing and acknowledged by the above date to be eligible for a refund. Cancellations after December 22, 2017, and no-shows are not refundable.

Continuing Education Hours Offering 25 hours of cutting-edge, equineexclusive continuing education presented by nine distinguished speakers.

Each 50-minute lecture is equal to one continuing education credit. Attendees may earn up to 25 credit hours. For your convenience in recording your CE hours, one certificate will be included in your registration packet. It is your responsibility to document the sessions you attend and the number of hours you receive.

Proceedings One complimentary access code for electronic proceedings will be provided to each registered attendee. Additional codes may be purchased at the FAEP registration desk.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues, As we celebrate the 55th year of the Ocala Equine Conference, we also reflect upon the year that was 2017, which presented us with particular challenges during an active hurricane season. Damage to our beachside venue from Hurricane Irma made the facility incapable of hosting the 2017 Promoting Excellence Symposium. Rather than cancel the meeting entirely, the FAEP council opted to seek alternative sites. Tremendous effort on the part of the FVMA staff made it possible to move the entire conference to Orlando within four weeks of the meeting date, truly nothing short of a miracle.

The meeting was a complete success, and was well supported by our loyal attendees, surpassing previous attendance records altogether.

The new year brings new resolve and energy. And with that, we invite you to attend the 55th annual Ocala Equine Conference, January 19-21, 2018. Our event, “For Practitioners

by Practitioners,” will take place at the newly-renovated Hilton Ocala, and features a program of cutting-edge lectures from world-class speakers, providing 25 hours of high-quality continuing education.
