Welcome Lys Hansen, Honorary Chair FVAB All Together Now! It is a great pleasure to welcome you all: artists, makers, visitors and the surrounding communities to our Open Studios and to share and enjoy our creativity. This is always a splendid time of year with flowering gardens and beautiful countryside to explore and to seek out some of the studios and exhibitions and to see what artists have been creating all winter for your enjoyment and appreciation. There have been changes in the area -- Avril Nicol, our very gifted project co-ordinator has moved her beautiful gallery from Bridge of Allan to Dundas Street in Edinburgh and we wish her every success. We are very appreciative of the time and care she takes to make the Forth Valley Art Beat (FVAB) the success and the popular event that it is. Lots of hard work goes into co-ordinating this event, which is, as you know, spread over this large area. I want very much for us to feel that we are together and supportive of each other. Together we have strength and we have presence not only for ourselves but in making a valuable contribution in our communities. It is probably not possible for visitors to see every studio and exhibition, so a few representative shows from urban areas merit a mention here,
This year, in Stirling, Catherine King and Lesley Anne Derks will showcase their work at the Tolbooth gallery. It is also interesting to note that the Smith Art Gallery will host an exhibition by the Glasgow Society of Women Artists (GSWA). In Alloa at the Makers Gallery and Bistro there is also change. Over the past five years they have shown many art works from near and far...as well as very good coffee and food. From now on, however, only the Reach Out programme will continue. It is of great benefit to young people taking part, Artists at Marcelle House continue to flourish, as does Resonate Arts, with its many art classes and events. In Falkirk Marjory Sime is hosting an exhibition in the Howgate Centre in aid of the Seagull Trust charity. Artist Lesley Banks is opening a studio in the former tearoom in Callendar Park and from there visitors can go to the nearby Callendar House to view an exhibition of her work. Lesley is the current Artist in Residence there. So, you lovely people taking time to read this, you will have a fine time --- so enjoy it as much as possible. Please support your artists, take along some friends and have fun, too. We are all in this together! So let’s all keep it going. P.S. Should you be in the vicinity, remember that Stirling University is 50 years old this year and they have a wonderful collection of Scottish Art in the Pathfoot Building -- well worth a visit --- again and again.
Lys Hansen

She will help you with her ‘superlectric’ skills turning one of your favourite photos into a ready-made graphic. This creative social session will allow you to choose your own theme, a favourite person or animal? And then transfer that idea onto your own take away designer tote! Avril Nicol, Project Co-ordinator FVAB Welcome to the 8th year of Forth Valley Art Beat
A warm welcome to the new and returning artists and organisations to this year’s event. It goes without saying that without your participation the event would not be possible, so thank you again for making time in your schedule for this important community event. Forth Valley Art Beat is an opportunity to explore creativity in Central Scotland. For 8 years our focus has been to raise awareness of artists living and working in the area, and help connect the community to art. For nine days in June artists and organisations open their doors, offering visitors the opportunity to discover and uncover the variety of art and artists that reside and practice in the Forth Valley area. Our 2017 event features over 140 artists in 77 venues. You will find artists who have participated in the event since 2010 and newcomers joining for the first time with a wonderful scope of practice across the board. Whether this is your first time visiting Forth Valley Art Beat or you are an old friend with great experience of treading our routes: Welcome and enjoy!

I’m a painter, working in oils, acrylics and occasionally watercolour. My work is often inspired by the stunning landscapes that surround me here in Dunblane, and sometimes abroad. I love to try to capture the subtleties of differing light quality and rapidly changing weather. This year, I’ve completed many commissions, mainly favourite views, or special places.
Directions: The Riverside sits at the bottom of Beech Road, as it joins Dunblane High Street. Easy to find, plenty street parking nearby, or in the Mill Row Carpark, entrance just opposite the Riverside.

My artwork is created in oil or pastel, drawing inspiration from the beautiful local area and greater Scotland. I often work on a large scale but with a micro view, capturing transient moments in the natural world. I will also be displaying work currently on sale at Chester Zoo. Pop along for a wee look and a coffee or schedule a break at a cafe in town, just a short walk away.
I am a contemporary jeweller and my work consists of mixed-media jewellery and small scale vessels. My work is research-led and underpinned by a repeating theme of how we interact with the environment around us - particularly examining the space where the natural world and the man-made world collide. I also run the Central Scotland School of Jewellery, based in Dunblane.
As a self taught artist my work is always developing and new styles are emerging from time to time. My focus is generally on large land and sea scapes but more recent works include much more complex woodland and river scenes and a number of these will feature in this year’s exhibits along with the more traditional works.
Directions: The studio is situated opposite Springfield Terrace fl ats and at the entrance to Caledonian Place on the Doune Road in Dunblane. There is a long brown fence, enter the gate which has the Calderwood sign on it and turn right into the back garden.
Directions: RFL House is located next to the Dunblane Fire Station. There is plenty of parking in front of the building or on street. The building is open to the public and my studio is located on the second fl oor.
Directions: From Tesco Metro Dunblane (A820 Springfield Terrace). Go 50m North. Take old Doune Road. Take 1st left into George Street. Take 1st right at shop into Charles Street. Go 40m turn left into back lane. Go 50m to Studio No 12.

Jacqueline predominantly paints the figure in oils, patiently producing a small number of paintings each year, a virtue that benefits her collectors. Lorraine Robson makes beautiful, contemplative, hand-built, diamond polished ceramics paying homage to ancient skills while embracing contemporary influences. She creates intuitively, a fusion of ideas, drawing on a kaleidoscope of images and observations to make work with unique identity balanced between manufactured, machine made and organic references.
I like to question our understanding of things, I search for ways to consider how physically objects or images communicate meanings, require a response and challenge expectations. Interaction within ‘constructed’ spaces, layered surfaces and ambiguous forms make connections with what we see and what we know. Inherent is often subtle expression of relationships or representations.
Lesley Anne Derks graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1999. She paints predominantly cityscapes and has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and abroad. Her work has appeared in leading magazines and newspapers. This year as part of Forth Valley Art Beat Lesley Anne is thrilled to be exhibiting alongside Catherine King at the Tolbooth in a joint exhibition entitled Outside Inside.

Her passions are the relationships between art, community and spirituality. There will be MacKintosh’s work alongside work of her students and colleagues from the church. I studied one year fine art foundation and two years diploma in embroidery at Cumbria College of Art and Design. I am retired now and am happy to have time to pursue my love for creating images. It is fun trying different mediums and I have started making small lino and mono prints at home. I also paint in oils and gouache and I enjoy using colour to convey a feeling.
I design and make unique one-off furniture to commission from my workshop and studio in Stirling. From here I will be exhibiting some of my new and most recent work at this year’s show. In collaboration with Paul Howarth of Back2Back Studios we will be hosting from my venue the art work of several local artists working in the fields of painting, textile design, glass, and jewellery.
Most artists can... and do paint anywhere, some have dedicated studios, occasionally if we are lucky we are invited to share a creative space. This year Back2Back is the guest of Douglas Muir, a master designer furniture maker, at the wonderful Falleninch Farm. Our show is enhanced with a selection of work by some of the regions finest artists and artisans including Elin Isaksson’s beautiful glassware. Judy Reed is a mosaic artist using vintage china and other materials to create quirky mosaics for the home and garden. Lynne Schroder is a community based artist working mainly with copper, creating sculptures that catch the attention and bring a smile. Chris Brodie, artist, makes paintings and mono-prints using texture, silhouette and fine details to create evocative images.
A love of walking, the local landscapes and gardens are Katherine’s main sources of inspiration. Through close observation she tries to capture in her paintings a sense of place, colour, texture, light and mood and an illusion of credibility. Her studio and basement will form the Garden Gallery and her colourful garden will be open during Open Studios in conjunction with Scotland’s Gardens.
The Garden Gallery will show work by a group of artists who all share a love of the natural world and who take their inspiration or materials from their surroundings. Colourful interpretations (using a variety of media) of flowers, gardens, hedgerow plants, trees and landscapes form a common theme for the exhibition, including a display of hand crafted willow baskets.

After studying as a mature student at Glasgow School of Art from 1988 -1992 in Fine Art, I have worked with three dimensional pieces using found objects and handmade papers. All my works relate to the environment and ‘contain’ a walk.

My paintings begin in the landscape – nearby and elsewhere. I am interested in light, atmosphere and abstract patterns in nature. Sometimes, looking at landscape, I am surprised how much closer the past appears, as if observing distance bridges time. The work is made in the studio using sketches from outdoors, notes and memories.

And now for something completely different! My focus recently has been on experiments with collage and drawings based on what is closest to me. My favourite cup and saucer, roses, beloved kettle are given new life and seen in many forms. Texture, pastels and ink are all used to find new ways of expressing what is around me as well as my love of paint.

Amateur artist working in oils and mixed media. All proceeds from sales will go to Strathcarron Hospice.
Robin has painted for years in acrylics, but has recently specialised in pastels. He enjoys the challenge of using the special properties of pastels to create landscapes - mostly Scottish - of atmosphere and imagination.
Directions: From Stirling A84 turn left onto B826 to Thornhill. Drive 150yds, turn right into lane then immediately left into driveway - follow signs. From Callander/Doune on A84 turn right after garage onto B826 to Thornhill and as previous instructions.
Directions: Coming from Stirling on the A84 to Doune, turn left onto the B826 just before the petrol station. After some 50 yards, turn second right (opposite the cemetery), then after 15 yards turn sharp left up the Northlands drive for 200 yards. Easy.

Judy’s work is mostly mixed media, including pastel, acrylic, oil and collage. Her pictures may reflect travels, but more often than not display the varying light on Scottish scenes and domestic still life with a colourful twist.
Blending my background in science, photography, the antiques and collectables trade with my Orkney and Shetland roots, I use a diverse range of found objects, traditional yarns, antique fabrics, and raw materials to create pieces evocative of the light, land, and sea of Scotland in kiln glass panels, knitted and woven wares, paintings, costumes, and jewellery.
Camphill Blair Drummond provides a creative and therapeutic environment for both residential and day students with complex learning difficulties.
Directions: From Stirling direction come off the M9 motorway at junction 10. Take the A84 Crianlarich Road for 5.7 miles. Turn left onto the B826 and fi rst right to Northland House Studios. From Doune turn left onto A84 towards Stirling, turn right after garage.

If you decide to visit Artists ‘Studios during Open Studios week you will see on display my recent paintings mainly in acrylics. Also prints, both traditional and digital as well as drawings in different media. There will also be works in 3D, collage, sketchbooks and cards.
I draw on my life experiences, my background, love of colour and nature. My decorative art is influenced by my walks in the countryside, the garden and the people I meet, places I visit, the photographs I take and sketches I make. I feel comfortable using a range of media as each different one allows me to express my artistic dexterity, hence interpreting the world around me in my work.
Directions: Artists’ Studios is easily accessed from the A883 Denny to Falkirk road. Turn into Winchester Avenue and take the fi rst entrance on the left. There is free parking at the side of the studio.

For my 2nd year in the FVAB I will show prints, mixed media works and drawings as well as some hand painted reclaimed furniture pieces. Directions: Off Stirling Street Dunipace, (A872) the Heritage Rooms are in Milton Row which is the street behind the Red Hoose pub.

I work mainly in ceramics. From delicate embossed pieces, framed and personalised, or shaped into bowls - to exotic colourful butterflies quirkily escaping from their frames. Or, maybe, magical dream pockets, or elegant heart sconces with an edge! Come see what I’m currently working on, and then you’ll understand the magic!
Elaine welcomes visitors to her home studio. Many of her pieces are oneof-a-kind and perfect for casual or dressy occasions. You can also sign up for one-to-one and small group workshops, making your own very personal piece of jewellery. Elaine studied in Italy and Scotland, drawing ideas from Scottish landscape history and folklore. She works mainly in silver and pewter. Commissions welcome.
Marjory Sime will be showcasing artwork to raise funds for Seagull Trust Cruises Charity (nothing to do with the birds!). This local charity provides unique support to people with special needs. All the artists exhibiting (and we have some crackers!) will be donating a portion of their sales to their work as well as their much needed boathouse extension.

We invite you to not only view the art on display but to also interact by adding your input to the ongoing story of the Union and Forth and Clyde Canals. Decorate a brick in our Brick Appeal or simply have a good time creating and storytelling!
Using clay, I create art work inspired by the varied colours and textures created by seasonal changes in my immediate environment combined with Falkirk’s rich industrial and Historical past. These art works take the form of press moulded wall pieces, low relief panels and wheel thrown forms often incorporating plant matter and recycled wood.
Most of my art is inspired by my imagination. Its abstract in design and is good fun but I’m driven to improve on the designs as I grow as an artist. All the images are individual pieces and individual expressions. I’m definitely in it for the fun so I much prefer to exhibit my art rather than sell it (but if you twist my arm it’s yours).
Directions: M9: Follow signs for Callendar Park and town centre. Drive along Callendar Road to the final roundabout in front of KFC. Go left at the roundabout onto Arnot Street. At the next mini-roundabout, right into Cochrane Avenue. Turn right at the next mini roundabout into Cockburn Street. The car park entrance is on the right hand side at the next roundabout.
Directions: Bean Row Pottery is located just off Falkirk High street in between Kings Court and the Cow Wynd.
Directions: My studio is located above the CEX DVD store opposite the entrance to the old British Home Stores on Falkirk High Street. Other businesses at this address are The Avenue and the Salvation Army jobsearch.

Her exhibition Gongoozler launches at the Park Gallery and reflects a journey along Scotland’s 137 miles of canal from the perspective of the pedestrian on the towpath. The work represents a move out of the studio and interior world.

The Little Blue Shed is back on the artist map after a wee while away and I look forward to welcoming you down the steps into my little garden studio. Come and see Scottish landscape inspired paintings, prints, drawings and small handmade gifts and cards. My miniature gallery will extend into the garden when the weather permits, and you are most welcome to enjoy some free home baking and chat too.
My subject matter is wide ranging as I respond to structure and contrasts in tone and colour. Although most works start from strong drawings, often from spontaneous outdoor ‘sketches’, the pieces are developed and expressed through a wide variety of media and techniques from charcoal, to paintings in acrylic/watercolour, to printmaking or 3D sculptures.

Having studied Jewellery and Metalwork at Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee I graduated and then promptly moved to work in an accountancy firm. After six years of being sensible I took the leap and in December’16 set up my own workshop at Marcelle House in Studio 9. I have never looked backed. I create jewellery pieces primarily in silver, stones and enamels. I would love to show you around.
Daphne Hamilton who trades as “derenz” enjoys the challenge of creativity in a shared studio. Inspired by the everyday, the studio contains work in slate, on tile, canvas, and leather. The challenge for her is to keep pushing the boundaries. She enjoys the benchwork involved in upcycling frames and the physical aspects of producing something to be enjoyed, including hand finished greetings cards.
We are a woodcraft group based in Alva. our members produce a wide range of wood based items from decorative items, functional items using a range of techniques and skills. We include wood carvers, woodturners, carpentry skills and furniture. We will have an exhibition and items for sale. We will have beverages during opening times.
