Welcome
Lys Hansen, Honorary Chair FVAB ART BEAT
SOUND THE DRUMS !!!!!!!
It is splendid to greet the sun after a long winter and to enjoy preparing for the adventure of Art Beat which is very close to heart beat and close to my heart and to the joy of art and the opportunity to visit artists and makers in their open studios. This makes a wonderful contribution to the community at large and I know it reaches out to a lot of people who want to be part of this experience and to share it with friends and family. In the Falkirk area Margory Sime has gathered some local artists together and you can see their art work at the Howgate Centre. This will be in support of Strathcarron Hospice. At the Forth Valley Royal Hospital Fiona McGurk and Emma Reid will have an interactive event in order to engage with the visitors, the results of which will be exhibited there. In Stirling at The Tolbooth June Carey shows her work, June is a master of pastel technique and of etching, so go along and see how she does it! Also in Stirling, the Cowane Centre is hosting Theatre Broad who will perform a play with a difference. And don’t miss a visit to Stirling University’s Art Collection. The Alloa area is a hive of activity all year round and you can catch their artistic vitality at the Marcelle House Studios. There is always a big welcome there and lots of talent. Well, I would say, for a visitor, you are spoilt for choice!!!!! I wish everyone a wonderful Art Beat!!! You will be exhausted, but then you are worth it.
Lys Hansen + Avril Nicol
Avril Nicol, Project Co-ordinator FVAB Building on the fantastic success of Forth Valley Open Studios over the past six years we are now expanding: We have added new features to the event and rebranded for 2016 but the ethos of the event and open nature will firmly remain. Forth Valley Art Beat is showcasing the work of established and emerging artists, designers, makers, art clubs, galleries and organizations. By bringing together these participants the event will deliver a mixture of visual art from open studios, installations, popup shows, performance art and exhibitions in galleries and community spaces throughout the Forth Valley area. I would like to thank all of the artists, visitors and supporters of the event. Your continued participation and support is fundamental to the success of the event. Here’s to another exciting and successful event.

A delightful multi arts performance piece, combining drama, visual art, and music. The play is set in 1930s Scotland and tells the story of Rosemary, who a week before her wedding is having her likeness drawn in charcoal by Joan. As Joan sketches, the two women talk and discover a dark secret shared by both of them. The music drives and reflects the action of the piece. 4

Fiona McGurk 59 Grasps: It’s ok; I’ll not let you go (2016)
Join artist Emma Reid in the Atrium of Forth Valley Royal Hospital to take part in this project for Forth Valley Art Beat.
Edinburgh College of Art graduate Fiona McGurk will be collecting the grasp shape of 59 health professionals to create a site-sensitive, mixed media installation. Each grasp sculpture (a negative-space form) will represent collectively, a symbol of care, dignity, strength, and support.
During two days in May Emma will be meeting staff, patients, and visitors in Forth Valley Royal Hospital and inviting them to become part of this new, site-specific installation. Visit anytime between 11am and 6pm on Wednesday 18 May or Thursday 19 May to take an alginate cast of the shape made inside our hands while we hold hands. This simple yet unfamiliar act asks two strangers to make contact and share stillness. The whole process will take around 5 minutes – but you are welcome to stay longer if you are enjoying the conversation!
The work is inspired by Fiona’s personal experience of Forth Valley Royal Hospital and will be exhibited there in the hospital atrium throughout the summer.
Emma will then take these alginate forms back to her studio to cast them into plaster. The collection of plaster casts will be installed in Forth Valley Royal Hospital in June, each one individual and a direct representation of the contact made. 5

I live and work in Dunblane and paint in both oils and acrylics. I’m inspired by the light and landscapes of Scotland, but paint a variety of subjects, and private commissions.
Annette looks for the magical or dynamic character found in landscape, whilst Heather has been looking at rocky landscapes in Scotland, England and the Canadian Rockies. We also love figure painting, so a number of portraits will be included.
Original works and prints will be on sale at the Riverside, and visitors will be welcome to watch while I work. At other times, visitors to my working studio are most welcome, just ring first to make sure I’m around.
Directions: Dunblane Museum, The Cross, Dunblane, FK15 0AQ (opposite the Cathedral). There is a carpark at The Haining, behind the Cathedral. Opening times 10.30-4.30 Monday to Saturday.

Painting mostly land and seascapes in oils I try to portray my work to show the natural beauty and character of Scotland’s wild places. My favourite subjects are from the north and west coast, especially the Outer Hebrides. I also have some more local works. On occasion I diversify from my usual style with some more contemporary works with varying degrees of success.
As a child I grew up in Botswana and would collect lizards, chameleons, crickets, tortoises etc and bring them into my garden. My childhood informs my work as well as my love of the natural world that surrounds me in my Scottish home. I often paint, draw or make hybrid pieces, the combination of human and animal attributes, creating a metaphor for our need to belong to the natural world.
Directions: Blaeberry River Studio is situated just past Tesco’s on the right on the A820 Doune Road in Dunblane. Alternatively it is a five minute walk from the train station over the old railway bridge.
Directions: From A820 Doune Rd turn on to Old Doune Rd. opposite Tesco store. Take 1st left on to George St. Take 1st right at shop. Then after 20yds turn left into small lane. Then 60yds to Studio No12.
Directions: Come into Dunblane. After Tescos, turn left and go all the way up The Old Doune Road until you come to a small roundabout. Turn left at Braemar Avenue. My house is the yellow house on the left.
Fiona McKenzie van Baardwijk creates drawings and paintings of the natural world in addition to teaching through Blaeberry River Art. Using pastels, acrylic or oil Fiona records Scotland’s landscape from a different perspective.

The Hut is a diverse but connected collection of work by Jacqui Park Design, Marion Douglas Art and Hoots Wood. Jacqui Park creates unique nautical Beachcrafts/Interior Accessories made from natural materials beachcombed from Scottish beaches. Marion Douglas paints an eclectic mix of Scottish land and seascapes in acrylic. Hoots Wood creates a range of individually designed pieces from upcycled wood and other materials.
The theme this year is marvellous from mundane. Come and make waste into wonderful! We welcome you: to see demonstrations of weaving, spinning and dyeing; to walk in a medicinal and dyers herb garden : to try out some basic craft techniques – basic paper making, rag rug making, hat making, dyeing with lichen and more. We offer hand woven and hand spun items for sale along with refreshments.
As a former journalist and graduate of Glasgow School of Art (2001) Environmental, I am interested in working with people and pushing the boundaries of “what is art?“

Tanya Gomez is the featured ceramist at &Collective during Forth Valley Art Beat. Working in porcelain, Tanya uses a range of approaches in throwing to create forms that will capture qualities of fluidity, movement and provide a sense of space. It is through a process of energetic making and rigorous selection she has learnt to observe how the clay works and find new ways to go forward. The throwing is dynamic and cutting and assembling make the forms.
Alan Chapman is an Edinburghbased painter and printmaker who trained at Teesside College of Art and Sunderland College of Art, graduating with BA (Hons) Fine Art in 1980. This current exhibition at &Collective combines painting, collage and printmaking techniques to produce sheets of pure colour.

I work in pastel and pencil. A current passion is still life - I am particularly intrigued by the subtle effect of muted light in an interior space - but I am also constantly drawn back to landscape and to attempting to interpret the ever-changing light on clouds, land and water.

I studied fine art at Glasgow School of Art as a mature student from 1988 1992. I now work mainly with 3D pieces using found objects and often my own handmade papers. All my works relate to the environment and ‘contain’ a walk. I have exhibited both nationally and internationally for several years and have also served as President of the Society of Scottish Artists.
Darren’s award-winning artwork reflects his travels near and far - from Antarctica to the Arctic; from the American Rockies to the Scottish Highlands. As an artist and naturalist his paintings often depict the wildlife he has encountered along the way so expect bears, whales, penguins and much, much more.

Repeating patterns in the natural world fascinate me; the striking similarities of human skin under an electron microscope and the skeleton of leaves; tidal ripple patterns and the grain of oak. The lithe shapes of hares, seals and birds also capture my attention.
This is a working pottery established in Buchlyvie in 1989. Alison produces no less than 5 ranges of tableware plus one-off sculptural ceramics and quirky giftware in porcelain or crank. The pottery is hand painted or carved and produced on the premises making each piece truly unique.
Silversmithing has become one of my life’s great escapes and pleasure as designing absorbs all my senses and tests all my skills.
A variety of techniques is used in production ie; slip casting, press moulding, hand building and modelling.

art4you Scotland is an art school & centre offering weekly art classes & weekend art workshops. Come and visit to see a class in operation. Get inspired by the buzz during the painting, drawing & watercolour classes. View a broad spectrum of work in a variety of mediums created by our our regular students and teaching artists Ewen Duncan, Vanessa Lawrence and Frances Douglas. We love what we do!
The Family Tree opened in June 2015 on time to take part in open studios. Over the past year we have expanded the number of artists and artwork on show. We display a variety of original artwork of various styles and mediums by artists including Rebecca McLean, landscapes and farm animals, Steve McLean, hand made furniture, mirrors and sand blasted signs. We regularly exhibit other local artists.
Having originally trained and worked as a woven textile designer, Katherine now works as an artist. Her love of walking and the local landscapes, especially hills, paths, trees and snow, are the main sources of her inspiration. Through close attention to observation she tries to capture in her oil paintings a sense of place, colour, texture, light and mood and an illusion of credibility.
Directions: Heading from Balfron to Killearn on A875 turn right at the Fintry Cross Roads towards Balfron Station, continue for 1 mile. art4you Scotland Studio is on the right at Ballochruin Farm.
Directions: From Fintry, drive approx 1.5 miles, we are on the right hand side around 150 yds after Balgair caravan park. Heading to Fintry from Kippen we are on the left, roughly 150 yds before Balgair car park. Access is via drive with stone wall either side.

Mackay’s work is broadly about place. Layers are built up , each new one being informed by the previous so that the finished piece can be quite abstract.

I paint what I love most which is the sea, still life, dancers and musicians. I like to push my own boundaries as well as pushing paint around, using mainly oils, which gives me the fluidity I need to express what I see and feel. There will be live music on Friday, June 17th. Burnside Baroque will entertain you with early music while enjoying enjoying modern art.
Directions: Take the A811 from Stirling, turn left at the roundabout signposted Kippen, turn left at Kippen Cross into Burnside. Birch Grove is a white cottage with a blue door on the right.

My work is abstract and has a decorative form. I work mainly from a sketch book through which larger and more complex pictures develop. I use thinned down acrylic or watercolour on canvas or paper. In my Open Studio I will make a broad range of work available, including painting, collage and minimalist drawing. Visitors may also view my attic storeroom containing older works and sketchbooks.
Prelude and Fugue is a delightful multi arts performance piece, combining drama, visual art, and music. The play is set in 1930s Scotland and tells the story of Rosemary, who a week before her wedding is having her likeness drawn in charcoal by Joan. As Joan sketches, the two women talk and discover a dark secret shared by both of them. The music drives and reflects the action of the piece.
Directions: My studio can be reached via Upper Bridge Street and St Mary’s Wynd. Kingstables Lane by foot runs from the right of John Cowan’s House on St Mary’s Wynd to Upper Castle Hill. Vehicle access via Barn Rd and Castle Court.
Directions: The Cowane Centre is situated on Cowane Street, Stirling, FK8 1JP. From the city centre, follow Cowane Street along to the end, and the Cowane Centre is on the left. There is a car park and good street parking roundabout. Times of performances detailed below.

For FVAB I will be making new sitespecific sculptural work in FVRH. This project is informed by the caregiving work of the hospital and the large number of staff, patients, and visitors who enter this space each day. For two days in May I will invite these people to become a part of the work by meeting with me to take an alginate cast of the shape made inside our hands while we hold hands. A collection of plaster casts will be then be made and installed in FVRH in June, each one individual and a direct representation of the contact made. You can find me in the Atrium of FVRH on: Wednesday 18 May (11am - 6pm) Thursday 19 May (11am - 6pm) 33
59 Grasps: It’s ok; I’ll not let you go (2016) Ideas concerning accumulation, connection and context inform Fiona’s work. Within a wide framework of approaches, painting and drawing continue to underpin her research and creative practice and the making of three-dimensional objects has become increasingly important. Collecting the grasp shape of 59 health professionals, Fiona will create a site-sensitive, mixed media installation. Each grasp sculpture, a negative-space form, collectively a symbol of care, dignity, strength, and support. Directions: FVRH is located on Stirling Road, enter the hospital though the main entrance, walk a short distance to the atrium and view the exhibition.

I work mainly in ceramics. From delicate embossed pieces, often framed & personalised, or shaped into bowls - to exotic colourful butterflies quirkily escaping from their frames. Elegant ceramic bunting to magical ‘dream pockets’, heart sconces, with an edge! Pop in for a chat, share some bubbles and see what I’m currently working on - I’d love to meet you!
Elaine Petrie is based in Falkirk. She works mainly in silver and semi-precious stones and has trained in Scotland, Cornwall and Milan. She applies contemporary design principles to organic shapes and textures. Many of her pieces are inspired by the nearby Antonine Wall and the surrounding landscape. Elaine makes themed collections and one-off pieces and is happy to discuss commissions.
I have to be honest about the origins of my creativity and artistic output. I am bipolar. I am disabled but without my illness I would not be the person I am today – an artist. I’m happy to discuss the creative process attached to my art and would welcome any response to it. All in in all it is a very colourful and emotive collection. One of my beliefs is that anyone can paint. I hope you enjoy the show.

Born in Falkirk, Scotland. I worked for the family business as a foreman joiner before picking up a camera and studying photography at the Glasgow Metropolitan College. This selection of portraits are of normal everyday people and their splendid red hair. Redheads constitute approximately 4 percent of the European population. Scotland has the highest proportion of redheads.
The image is a story, a series of interactions between mysterious places and mechanisms. Traditional materials provide an entry point for viewing and provide engagement between the viewer and artwork. Meaning can be derived from exploring the chaos and asking open or specific questions, whether there are distinct answers is beyond my reckoning. I may be trying to document an alternate history or imagined world that is familiar but often not ours.

My creative inspiration comes from nature and my environment combined with local history. Using clay, coloured slips and oxides to convey landscapes, animals and sections of our surroundings we sometimes pass by. Incorporating found and recycled pieces of wood, often including plant materials such as leaves, grasses and seed heads into the wet clay, combined with textured clay.
Cath creates atmospheric Scottish landscape digital collages featuring the wide open spaces, vast grey skies and low light of the Scottish West Coast and the Hebrides. Through her work she tries to capture the solitude and calm of these special places. For more about her work and technique please see the website.

George Wyllie MBE (1921-2012) was a remarkable artist who reached out beyond the confines of the gallery to connect with people through his art. Wyllie’s thought-provoking ‘sculptures’ can be found across Scotland. Inspired by Wyllie’s locomotive sculpture at Falkirk Train Station, this exhibition looks at the artist’s life-long love of locomotives. Directions: The Park Gallery is approximately 20 minutes from both Falkirk railway stations.

Margaret teaches quilt-making, silk painting and screen printing and sells textile art pieces.
I work from my home studio painting and designing. My paintings have a naïve and quirky style and vary in size. Recently I have been putting my designs onto products, coasters, cushions and other forms or print.

Janice - presents a collection of vibrant mixed media, collage and traditional paintings. Sue - using fabrics as paint and a free machine needle to draw I create collaged images on canvas. I like to work from life reflecting a love of plants and flowers. Vicky - for over 30 years I have been creating individual silver and semiprecious jewellery. Printmaking from the 3 artists also on show.
My photography work is primarily Scottish, often local and created across the seasons. Shots on show range from panoramic landscape vistas to close-up studies of delicate flora and fauna.
