Welcome Lys Hansen, Honorary Chair FVOS Once again, it is with great pleasure that I wish the Forth Valley Open Studios artists and makers a very successful week ahead. To the many visitors, I wish a splendid adventure and hope you will enjoy meeting many of the artists and discussing their ideas and techniques. This is such a special opportunity, too, for the artists to see a public reaction to their creativity. In an age of mass production, to which we are all subjected, what is made by hand becomes very special indeed. We should all thank Avril Nicol and her team for the efficient organisation and administration of the Open Studios event; without them the event would not happen. The artists who are participating deserve our thanks, too, for the same reason. I am very pleased to tell you that this year there are 140 artists taking part, and also that Strathcarron Hospice, Denny will be exhibiting the artworks of their patients. There will be three POP UP exhibitions at three different locations: the Tolbooth Gallery in Stirling; the Forth Valley Royal Hosptial at Larbert and at the Makers Gallery and Bistro in Alloa. These will be showing simultaneously. Well! What more can I say!!!! Except that the show must go on, so please, let us all enjoy wonderful June and a celebration of our gifts!!!

Lys Hansen with Avril Nicol at Lys’ 2014 exhibition Love + War + Paint

Avril Nicol, Project Co-ordinator FVOS Forth Valley Open Studios is centered on its talented artists and makers who welcome the public in to their studios and workspaces. We cannot thank you enough for your support over the past six years. It’s also a great pleasure to have many new and returning artists participate this year. We have introduced a Forth Valley Art Guide section to the brochure and website, where we are supporting and promoting year round exhibitions, events and workshops in the area. We hope visitors to the area during the nine day event will return to attend these events later in the year. Hope you have a fantastic time!

Pop-up Shows + Corridor Commission Forth Valley Open Studios are hosting three Pop-up Shows this summer

Visit Lys in her beautiful studio and see her exciting work and engage with her in discussing some of her ideas and her vision. She has many large paintings and small jewel-like pieces and drawings, prints, painted wood pieces (see picture). Lys likes to discuss her techniques and her creative process. There are small sketches available for purchase, as well as catalogues, books and postcards.

Down to last year’s success, we are once more opening our doors. The enthusiasm for the social enterprise aspect of Wool-n-Woods work was overwhelming. The bags continue to be made from wool sourced in Scotland and combined with the African fabrics and wooden buttons. The knitting needles are progressing well and the Malawi artisans continue to produce some lovely items. Come and see us again.

We are a group of twelve artists who have been successfully exhibiting for almost two decades. We offer a diversity of styles and media from abstracts to figurative and expressive landscapes, assemblages, printmaking and ceramics. In fact, something for everyone.

Directions: Braco is on the A822 off the A9 just north of Dunblane. Smiddy Brae is in the centre of the village beside the hotel/restaurant. Look for the lifesized blue horse-head on the gable. Lys is pleased to talk to you and show you work, with tea.

Directions: Take the B8033 from Dunblane towards Braco. Pass a sign for Ashfield, go round a big bend continue a further 200m. Turn in to drive on left. We are the wooden houses at the top of the drive. Plenty of parking. 2 miles from the flyover.

Directions: On A9 north, take 2nd exit to Dunblane (marked Dunblane/Kinbuck); on A9 south, take Dunblane exit. Turn right onto B8033 to Kinbuck. Turn left for Ashfield after about half a mile and follow signs to village hall.

This year West Moss-side is excited about all things wild: wild places, wild forms, and wild nature. Our regular artists are joined by local creative artists Georgia Crook (installations, free standing sculptures in willow and mixed media), Kate Sankey (weaving and twisting natural materials) and this year we are pleased to welcome silversmith Gillie Welstead with her evocative jewellery.

After studying as a mature student at Glasgow School of Art from 1988 -1992 in fine art, I have worked with three dimensional pieces using found objects and handmade papers. All my works relate to the environment and ‘contain’ a walk.

As an artist and naturalist Darren spends lots of time in search of the wild. This year he was awarded the coveted post of Artist in Residence with the Scott Polar Research Institute in Antarctica so expect paintings and drawings of penguins, albatrosses, whales and lots of ice.

Close to my home lies the North Common, an area of uncultivated land separating village gardens from the fields beyond. It is colonised by native plants - many are the same “weeds” which as a gardener, I constantly battle against, but which as an artist, I find both fascinating and beautiful. These few untamed acres provide precious habitat for many wild creatures, and endless inspiration for me.

I paint in a farmed landscape where the untamed edge is never far away. Control is temporary. Cut grass grows, the unused footpath eventually becomes impassable, buildings decay when left untended and nature takes its course – towards the wild. The constant change of light and sky is an inspiration and a reminder of renewal. Works in oil pastel, acrylic paint and mixed media.

Recent works are inspired by a trip to Venice. Painting medium ranges from watercolour and acrylic to pen and ink. Batik work also on display.

We will be exhibiting a wide variety of work created together with our students in our specialist workshops including glasswork, baskets, textiles, pottery and mosaics.

Ann Shaw, former journalist on The Herald and a graduate of Glasgow School of Art will be showing work using art and technology to reflect new ways of looking at the world around us.

I create various pieces in most mediums, oil, acrylic, watercolour, pen, ink, and mixed media. My work covers sea and landscapes, abstracts and figurative work. I strive to create a connection between a painting and the viewer, focusing not just on view, but on the atmosphere mood or emotion. I carry out private and corporate commissions, as well as exhibiting in select galleries.

We are a residential and creative and therapeutic work environment for adults with learning difficulties.

&Collective is a contemporary art gallery hosting a new featured artist every 6 weeks, specialising in a diverse range of fine art, drawing, painting and printmaking. Their work is exhibited within the gallery along with our constantly changing selection of original hand-made art works, ceramics, sculpture, prints, unique jewellery and contemporary crafts.

Edwina Bracken is the current featured artist at &Collective, the exhibition runs from 29th May - 9th July. The idea of using objects and introducing sound to challenge the inherent objecthood of painting is one particular route Edwina is presently exploring. This research and experimentation is helping to find new directions in the expanded field of painting.

Lorraine Robson makes beautiful, contemplative, hand-built ceramics paying homage to ancient skills while embracing contemporary influences.

Font of Art is a collective name for a group of different artists who gather together under one roof in this atmospheric venue during the week of FVOS. This year there are painters using all mediums, with a variety of styles, sizes and prices. There are also crafters in jewellery and in textiles including tweed and tartan. Cards, both handcrafted and those printed from art work are available.

Unique jewellery, hand-crafted from wire and glass beads; many created by some of the UK’s finest bead artists. Our ‘Rock Pool’ range is reminiscent of the sea shore. Every bead is a work of art. Hold them up to the light and discover their hidden depths. Choose your own beads and have them made into jewellery of your own design. Bring your old bead necklaces to have them refashioned.

After years of working with paint and pencil I moved from Denmark to Scotland and were immediately fascinated by the colours found in the Scottish Highland. One late night the idea of twintage was born. Tweed with a contemporary twist. So I am now sewing my way through layers of tweed or drawing lines with my needle or pen. At my studio you will find colourful paintings and woolen plant pots.

Directions: From Henderson Street turn into Fountain Road (opposite the Royal Hotel). The Church is on the far left at the junction of Fountain Road and Keir Street.

Directions: In Fountain Road, park near the bus-stop at the entrance to Allanvale Road, against the stone wall. Cross over Fountain Road. Walk up the side of No 45, following the arrows and bunting until you reach No 47, which is round the corner at the back.

Directions: When arriving at Hillview Drive you will find a yellow house with the number 19. Follow directions towards my garden from where you will enter my lovely studio. If the weather is right there should be an outdoor exhibition as well.

Jaine Marriott’s handcut mosaics are inspired by the colours, patterns and textures of the natural world. She is particularly interested in working with slate; contrasting its toughness and durability with the fragility and delicacy of china and glass.

Emma Jo Webster designs & hand weaves contemporary tapestries - specialising in portraiture & colourful abstracts. She works mainly to commission and exhibition, and also enjoys teaching tapestry, often holding classes in her studio. At the Macrobert there will be the opportunity to see some of her large scale tapestries too.

Gio Martin is an illustrative artist who works mainly in gouache and pen on textured paper. Her figurative drawings often start with a word or phrase, bringing in natural elements such as flowers, trees or birds to create visual poems. The figures are often whimsical looking off to the distance remembering dreams and memories.

My work has always been inspired by social anthropology and how human beings engage with each other and the world around them. Each piece tells a story. Visitors, young and old will have the opportunity to create their own work of art and tell their own story.

Eloise Kerr graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2006 with a BA Honours in Design. Since then she has been working on community art projects, undertaking various art and design commissions and developing her own work in various disciplines. Inspired by patterns and forms found in nature, her recent work explores environmental issues and connections between art, science and ecology.

I graduated from Blackpool & Fylde Art School in 2005 with a BA Honours in photography. I use traditional medium format (film) and digital cameras to capture Scottish landscapes and details found within urban environments, with particular attention to light and composition.

Closely following residencies at Stirling Castle & Cowane’s Hospital, Iona has been welcomed especially for Forth Valley Open Studios to inhabit another ancient space in which to create and exhibit her work. Best known for paintings and drawings made through free imagining style, her work evokes lucid links across time and between the past and present City.

The working studio of a professional illustrator displaying some of his ‘ classic car’ commissions plus new paintings, graphics & print work. We are delighted with our third collaboration with Paul Howarth’s Back Lane Studio. The show is enhanced by artwork from some of Scotlands best artists and craftsmen.

After 5 years of Forth Valley Open Studios it would be unrealistic to make claims of another year of innovation, we continue to be dedicated to improving our limited creative skills. We are proud to maintain our co-operation with Chris Hastie’s Back Walk Studio, both shows are supported by work from some of the regions most talented artists and artisans. Diana Hand works in different media including printmaking, drawing on paper, sculpture, and textiles.

This year I have included figurative painting and drawing which I have been focusing on more. Portraits seen as landscapes of the mind together with the movement of dancers and musicians. Using a limited palette of mostly oils and pastels, I like to push my own boundaries and try to express what I see and feel.

I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in June 2014 and I am keen to continue, expand and explore the ideas that developed during my last year at college. The starting point for my work is usually ‘place’ and as I build up in layers each one informs the next so that the completed piece can be quite abstract and at other times less so. Each painting is like a journey of discovery.

Having trained and worked for 15 years as a woven textile designer, Katherine is now enjoying working as an artist. Her love of nature and the local Scottish countryside are the main sources of her inspiration. Her oil paintings are a direct response to what she sees, and her aim is to capture in her paintings a sense of place, colour, texture, space, light and mood.

Steve McLean has been designing and building high quality furniture, turnings and carvings to order from local Scottish hardwoods for 15 years. Stephanie McLean studied Graphic Design at Glasgow Metropolitan Collage and now runs her own bushiness Trilogy Designs. Rebecca McLean studied Contemporary Art at Forth Valley College and is now developing her painting skills at her studio in Fintry.

The open studio is an opportunity to bring together this dynamic playful group of Scottish based artists. The artists involved utilise a variety of media including drawing, painting, sound and performance work. The group will use the location of a barn and wild gardens to place and perform new work, creating an immersive environment to be experienced by the audience. Event on Saturday 13th 8.00pm free but contributions welcome.

Directions: From Stirling and the A811 take the B822 through Kippen, then over the hill to Fintry. The turning for the Courtyard Cafe at Knochraich Farm is on the right hand side of the road on the bend just before you enter the village of Fintry.

Using dye, print, paint and stitch, Gillian Cooper transforms plain fabric into atmospheric installations and art work. Gillian teaches textile techniques and design to small groups from her home studio ranging from weekly beginner classes to two year courses at City&Guilds level. During FVOS, Gillian will be offering visitors drop-in taster workshops in textiles.

art4you Scotland is an art centre offering weekly art classes & workshops. We are exhibiting a broad spectrum of work in a variety of mediums created by our teaching artists Ewen Duncan, Vanessa Lawrence, Frances Douglas & many of our regular students.

I work with a variety of media -- wax, paint, textiles, wood, metal, found objects -- to create mixed media assemblage and small sculptures. I draw. I paint. I take abstract photographs. My process is meditative and intuitive and through it I explore the poetry of the every day and the beauty of the overlooked.

Hephzibah Kilbride creates striking functional ceramics and prints. Her bowls, vases and cups are a pleasure to use every day. Zibah is originally from the USA, a graduate of Maine College of Art. Siljes Elisabet Thorin is interested in the intensity, clarity and uncertainty contained within a moment frozen in time. Her photographs suggest a narrative, hinting at something beyond the image itself.

Drawing is the starting point and strong basis for all my art. I work in a variety of media as dictated by my response to different subject matter. I frequently ‘sketch’ outdoors producing pen and ink/watercolour pieces. This year I have been developing my skills in printmaking and have also been working on sculptures in metal. I love strong tonal and colour contrasts.

I move between representational and abstract work, simply trying to find harmony and balance in both the process and the finished painting.

I love working with both glass and wool. I create elegant dichroic fused glass jewellery and unique felted corsages. My floral stained glass panels and sun-catchers, jazzy fused glassware and vibrant garden mosaics will be on show at my studio.

Camilla has been working in the pottery for 15 years making both thrown and handmade functional stoneware as well as her famous medieval watering pots. Most of her work is fired using a gas reduction kiln and often incorporates textures printed into the clay using found objects and local fauna. Her work is on display in the gallery along with other local ceramics and a variety of other artwork.

I make my work by embedding natural objects into translucent resin. Themes include the sea and woodland. Some pieces are illuminated to create colourful wall art and other larger pieces are used to make unique tables. I also make bowls and dishes with seaweed, shells and woodland flora. Please feel free to pop in for a look and see how the work is made.

Directions: Come to Main Square and village green, between the Palace and the Town House. Closest parking in West Car Park 50 yards away and disabled parking outside Pottery.

This is my 3rd year at The Open Studio Event and my main focus will be Watercolour with a few Acrylic works. A mixture of landscapes and cityscapes will be the basis of the exhibition but I will have some “highland coo” portraits as well. There will also be some prints available of some of my art works.

You’re most welcome to pop along to my home gallery and workshop to browse a range of paintings, prints and hand-painted gifts My work focuses on home and family themes, as well as figurative works and colourful cheerful landscapes which will brighten any wall. Help yourself to fresh tea/coffee and homebaking whilst you browse. Hope to see you soon!

Louise’s work is often inspired by the landscape of the countries she has lived and travelled in. Mongolia, Egypt, India, Turkey and Iceland feature in her current woven tapestries, each using a different palette of colours, yarns and techniques. This year Louise will be including a new body of work inspired by a recent residency in Finland. Cards, books, looms and yarn will also be for sale.

Directions: From Tillicoultry clock tower, take the 3rd entrance on the left after the roundabout in the direction of Dollar. Turn into the driveway then take a right across the front of Westbourne House and drive around the back.

Directions: My pretty white and blue semi-detached house is situated on the A91, Stirling to St Andrews road, which runs through Alva. If you are coming from Stirling it is situated on the right hand side after the library and before the shops.

Please feel free to pop in for a look and a chat, tea/coffee will be available. Directions: Leave Tillicoultry on the A91 and turn left into Harviestoun Grove. Proceed up the hill and turn right into Heathwood Crescent, over the rise and you will see my parking signs, number 16 is on the right. My studio is well signposted from the A91.

Since 2012 I have been developing a commercial range of textiles, stationery and homeware under the brand name Natty Maid and it is here in my wee studio in Alloa where it all begins in the form of a hand pulled print. Why not pop along to see working on my collagraphs and linocuts and maybe even have a go at pulling a print yourself.

Welcome to Marcelle House, a fine villa in the heart of Alloa, home to 16 studios. This once forgotten gem is now a vibrant hub of creativity - painting, life drawing, portraiture, printing, luthier, yarn-bombing, weaving, philosophy, artisan chocolates, bespoke children’s couture, music, poetry, spoken word, and tango: every day is different in this growing community, why not come and see....

Directions: Entrance to Maker Village is at top of Ludgate immediately after 1st set of speed bumps. Enter building through brown double doors which face car park entrance. Go through door into hallway and turn left. Go through fi re door ahead and you’re there.

Directions: Entering Alloa on the A907 (Stirling to Clackmannan), Marcelle House is located on the roundabout opposite The Makers Village. This stunning villa is easily recognisable with its fl uted columns and portico. We have excellent parking to the rear.
