Christmastime Is Here Finding comfort and joy in the holiday season Happy holidays! As shocked as I am to see December once again, I’m thrilled that my favorite time of year is here. And what a difference a year makes. Last December marked one of the quietest holiday seasons I’ve had since childhood. There were no parties to attend, no shows to see, no travel to prepare for and no family or friends to host. In some ways, it was a bit sad and lonely, but the lack of busyness gave me opportunities to rejoice in the season, reflect on all I had to be thankful for and find rest at the end of a truly unforgettable year. I don’t know about you, but for me, this December is already shaping up to be packed. There’s work events, family events, fun events and everything in between. Oh, and don’t forget all the shopping and supply chain issues. We’re all in danger of having the month pass by in a

dizzying blur of cocktail dresses and Amazon packages, but if I’ve learned one thing from the past couple years, it’s that I don’t want to live my life at such a frantic pace all the time. I hope this holiday season you’re able to carve out some time to do the things you love or to do nothing at all. I hope you’ll be able to take joy in the things you say yes to and that you won’t feel guilt for the things you turn down. We’ve got a couple things to make your life easier this month. Our gift guide (page 59) is full of great ideas for items you can easily find at local shops. And once you finish your shopping, treat yourself to a holiday cocktail, courtesy of some of the best mixologists in town (page 71). It’s the little things, after all, that make the season bright, and I hope you enjoy every minute. BY NANCY FLOYD

Nancy is a reader of books, rider of bikes and lover of all things local. She lives in East Nashville with her husband, Kyle, and beagle, Gus. Email her at nfloyd@nfocusmagazine.com.

Growing up, he was fortunate to live near Radnor Lake, and he and his friends spent hours playing in the woods. It was here that his love for the outdoors and flowers began. Also during this time, a neighbor taught him how to make floral arrangements with the blooms from her garden and the woods that were his playground. Troy started gardening and practicing floral design in his free time and launched T Villager Designs on the side, thanks to encouragement from family and friends. In 2017, he decided to pursue it full time. Today, Troy and his team are known for creating gorgeous floral designs for weddings, corporate events, fundraisers and more, and Troy has also earned an acclaimed reputation for his holiday decorations. What are your favorite flowers for each season? Ranunculus and peony in the spring. In the early summer, it’s poppies and garden roses. In the fall, local dahlias. What’s the most challenging job you’ve done so far? I had the opportunity to work with a world-renowned event planner, Karen Tran. While it was a defining moment in my career, it was also a challenging one. I was working with a team of 36 creatives from around the country that had never met before. This job required a great deal of communication and patience among the entire team, especially because we were working under a tight timeline. This kind of scenario is when you are really tested in the industry and when you are reminded of your passions and why you set out to make this a career. I am fueled and inspired by other talented designers, and it was an honor to work with Karen, who is highly regarded in the industry.

Eat, Drink and Be Generous Fine wines and an unforgettable meal at the l’Eté du Vin Patrons Party

W

hen it comes to exquisite culinary events in town, there is simply no match for the l’Eté du Vin Patrons Dinner. The Nashville Wine Auction pulls out all the stops for the intimate black-tie affair, in which a world-class meal and exemplary wines take center stage, and this year’s event was truly one for the books. The wines of Marchesi Antinori, a 635-year-old Italian winery, were the stars of the show, perfectly complemented with a meal prepared by The Hermitage Hotel’s new chef, Kelsi Armijo, who is heading up the Jean-Georges restaurant, Drusie & Darr. Guests began their evening in the spectacular lobby of the hotel, sipping a Tenuta Montenisa Franciacorta sparkling rosé and nibbling on cornmeal-crusted oysters, smoked salmon mousse crisps and brie puff pastries. When everyone took their seats in the ballroom, Board Chair Lisa Maki began the program by honoring Holly Whaley’s 10 years leading the Nashville Wine Auction. “Thank you for all you’ve done for this organization,” Lisa said. “You are leaving it a better place.” Holly, who is retiring from her role as president and CEO this year, received a standing ovation and lively round of applause for her service. Lisa also introduced the incoming president and CEO, Loren Chumley, who paid homage to the legacy that Holly has created and championed the generosity of the organization’s patrons. The leisurely evening included four superb courses — the duck confit gnocchi with orange-braised fennel and spiced pistachio was a standout — paired with eight wines from Marchesi Antinori’s cellars. In between courses, there were breaks to hear remarks about the wines from Niccolò Maltinti, brand ambassador for Marchesi Antinori, and to honor Bill Nunnelly with the Norman M. Lipman Award. And no Nashville Wine Auction event would be complete without feverish bidding over one-ofa-kind lots in the live auction! The biggest ticket item this year was a dinner for eight at La Bernardin in New York City with nine rare wines from the Acker Cellar. The package went for a whopping $26,000! The evening was a memorable night of gourmet food, delicious wines and an exceptional amount of fundraising for cancer research — exactly what we’ve come to expect from the country’s longest-running charity wine auction.

Good With Wine Friends and wine are a perfect blend at l’Eté du Vin

T

he Nashville Wine Auction’s 42nd annual l’Eté du Vin came to a close with the always-lively gourmet dinner and auction. Attendees arrived at the JW Marriott Nashville with backpacks and roller bags loaded with fine wines in accordance with the event’s long-standing bringyour-own-wine practice that is coupled with a share-yourwine camaraderie. The reception featured the wines of Marchesi Antinori, the 635-year-old Italian estate honored this year. With glasses in hand, bidders seriously studied almost 450 live and silent auction items that consisted of outstanding wine-related lots, getaways, tastings and dinners. The live auction held some truly unique opportunities, such as a spot on the sidelines at the Alabama-Arkansas game and a three-hour tour on the famous America’s Cup racing yacht Stars & Stripes USA-11. Up for grabs again this year was the popular mid-auction snack break — two bottles of Cristal, two dozen Krystal cheeseburgers and 24 Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Chef Simon Bowker created a menu inspired by Italy and the crowd’s penchant for collecting and consuming extraordinary red wine. Attendees enjoyed stuffed mushrooms Florentine and tuna tartare during the reception and savored a showstopping entrée of braised short rib osso bucco. The decadent meal concluded with a dark chocolate and pistachio semifreddo. All the while, bidding was fast and furious on the 61 lots auctioned off during the four-course meal. This group’s reputation for benevolence is legendary, and whether it was an abundance of wine, an outpouring of generosity or some magical combination of the two, they outdid themselves this time. The evening’s proceeds broke yet another record and raised more than $2.1 million! The money will go a long way to fund the fight against cancer and support the important work done by regional agencies for patients and their families.

HE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK

Local clinic has a modern, medical solution to treat your Peripheral Neuropathy and is seeing incredible results!

“It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.” This tragic story was shared with us by a patient who has peripheral neuropathy. Thankfully no one was hurt in this accident. Dan S. had suffered almost every day of his life with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set in and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot. He realized it was time to get help. “The first stage is pain.” shares William Alexander L.Ac of Affinity Acupuncture in Brentwood. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on tacks or marbles. This pain eventually subsides and the numbness sets in which brings with it a whole other host of problems.” Dan’s general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribe him pills that would ease the pain of his neuropathy. Unfortunately, it is very common that peripheral neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. This was the case with Dan. “I said I wasn’t going to drive again. What if that had been a pedestrian?” He was now reliant on his wife to drive him around, even the simple pleasure of cruising down Natchez Trace or taking her out to dinner was outside his capabilities.

That’s where Dr. Alexander and his staff at Affinity Acupuncture come in. “Many of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as Dan S.” tells Dr. Alexander. “They’re in constant pain from neuropathy and it prevents them from not only living their lives but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. Depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden.” “I can’t lie,” confides Dan. “I was skeptical at first. Turns out after about three months treatments I was able to confidently drive myself to my appointments! My wife and I celebrated by buying ourselves a new car! It’s hard to put into words how incredible this is, quite frankly, William gave me my life back.” While Affinity Acupuncture specializes in acupuncture and it’s definitely part of their protocols in treating neuropathy, the real secret is in a more modern medical solution called ATP Resonance BioTherapy™. “This technology was originally developed by NASA to expedite healing and recovery” shares William. “It’s like watering a plant. ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ stimulates the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerve and provide them the proper nutrients to heal and repair.” You can learn more about Affinity Acupuncture by visiting www.affinityacupuncture.com. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation, call (615)939-2787 and we will get you on our schedule quickly. Affinity Acupuncture is a very intimate clinic and the staff takes pride in their ability to take their time with each patient so they are very limited in their ability to take on new patients. Centrally located in Brentwood right off Highway 65 and Old Hickory Road.

Old Hickory House Party The Hermitage Gala raises funds for the home of Andrew Jackson

R

esplendent in plenty of sparkling sequins and soft furs, the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel took a step back in time to the 1920s for the return of The Hermitage Gala. Co-chairs Mary Gambill and Mary Jo Shankle expressed that “it has been particularly exciting and rewarding to see plans finally come together” after taking last year off due to the pandemic. The annual black-tie event was welcomed back with smiling faces and toasts to a return to normalcy. The hot-club jazz tunes of The Derek Pell Trio moved through the lobby as patrons mingled with wine and cocktails and browsed the silent auction. There were many enviable items up for grabs, including original works of art like “The Hermitage” by Kristen Carpenter and “Presidential Homes,” a set of five pieces by Phil Ponder, and experiences at The Hermitage, such as wine and cheese in the garden, a sunset wagon ride and even dinner on the back porch of the mansion, a prize with a starting bid of $5,000. Guests could also purchase the wire cornucopias — handmade by Mary Hawkins and filled with flower arrangements from Martha and Malcolm Greenwood of Big Events — that served as centerpieces for many of the tables in the extravagant Symphony Ballroom. Following a short welcome and recognition of the cochairs by past Regent of the Board of Trustees Bob McDonald, guests enjoyed a delicious dinner of triple-braised short ribs with Yazoo beer-braising jus on smoked gouda grits followed by a salted caramel tart with toffee crumbles, berries, fig and orange-coconut tuile. After dinner, Bob, Carol Yochem and Dick Cowart were presented with hickory walking sticks for their efforts and involvement with the Andrew Jackson Foundation. The evening concluded with the keynote address by retired Army general and current NBC News analyst Barry McCaffrey, who spoke on the state of national security and the need to reckon with the controversial history of Andrew Jackson. Through funds raised at this event, the Hermitage is working to tell the full story of the former president and his legacy.

Land That I Love The Land Trust for Tennessee hosts Once in a Blue Moon

M

Clare Armistead, Carter Gordon

other Nature is clearly a fan of The Land Trust for Tennessee because, after a rainy Saturday afternoon, the clouds parted and the skies cleared just in time for the organization’s annual (outdoor) fundraiser, Once in a Blue Moon. Guests donned boots, hats and jackets for the casual autumnal party at Glen Leven Farm, and it was a picture-perfect fall affair co-chaired by Louise Beasley and Rosemary McIlhenny. While heading from their cars to the field, guests made a very important pit stop at the bar to try the evening’s signature cocktail, a citrusy concoction anchored by Jack Daniel’s No. 5. The cocktail and the passed appetizers were dreamed up by chef Kelsi Armijo from The Hermitage Hotel’s new restaurant, Drusie & Darr. Leroy Powell of the Whiskey Wolves of the West played live music during the cocktail hour, providing a festive atmosphere for the casual party. A mix of round and rectangular wooden tables were topped with candles and wildflowers in apothecary jars, all under the glow of string lights crisscrossing the tent. Adorable, shareable charcuterie trays were loaded with pickled vegetables, pimento cheese, smoked sausage, fresh breads and crackers. Guests enjoyed a fall wedge salad with apple cider-glazed tofu, curried deviled eggs and spiced pumpkin seeds before diving into an entrée of beef short ribs. Paiton Ingram started the festivities with the traditional singing of “God Bless America,” followed by a prayer of thanks from Doris McMillan of the Tennessee Historical Commission. Throughout the meal, guests also watched a short film recounting The Land Trust’s incredible conservation efforts and heard remarks from Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly. As dinner came to a close, the massive bonfire — which took nearly a month to assemble — was lit outside. Guests snacked on mini doughnuts from Ellie’s, sipped hot apple cider and toasted s’mores over the fire. It was a spectacular evening, but more importantly, it raised critical funds for The Land Trust’s mission to preserve Tennessee landscapes, an effort that has helped protect more than 130,000 acres to date. Picnic in the Field Sunday in the Park takes al fresco dining to a gorgeous new level

F

or 32 years, Sunday in the Park has been a beloved fall tradition benefiting Friends of Warner Parks, and this year was extra special. Building on the success of 2020’s drive-thru version due to the pandemic, co-chairs Julie Dretler and Polly Ryerson returned to Ridge Field in Edwin Warner Park with a clever hybrid event that kept everyone’s safety in mind. Those who wanted to stay enjoyed a delightful open-air luncheon, and those who wanted to dine at home or elsewhere in the Warner Parks drove through to pick up their meals. This modified version of the popular al fresco luncheon captured the magic of the past in a most enchanting way. On the sunny autumn afternoon, guests were awed by the sight as they drove into Ridge Field. In lieu of the traditional big tent, tables laden with seasonal blooms and bars dressed up with towering arrangements dotted the grounds. It was hard to believe that less than three hours earlier the field was barren, because everything looked perfect in the bucolic setting. The only tents on the grounds were quite the draw for attendees. At one, they picked up Kristen Winston’s delicious, fall-inspired picnic sacks packed with Joyce Farms chicken, orzo with roasted vegetables and pumpkin spice cake. At the other, they got the first look at the Friends’ newly released book, A History of Nashville’s Warner Parks, and chatted with a few of its contributors. The afternoon was a huge success, with 525 people choosing to picnic and 165 opting for the drive-thru. Now, more than ever, the Warner Parks are truly our “Sanctuary in the City,” providing an escape for so many during the pandemic. Funds raised from Sunday in the Park and the book support Friends of Warner Parks’ mission to preserve and protect the Warner Parks through educational programming and maintenance of the parks and their historical structures.

Dancing for Families Channeling the Roaring ’20s at Dancing for Safe Haven Harry Allen, Juanita Simanekova

Keri McInnis, Morel Enoch

A

David and Sonya Love

fter a hard start to the 2020s, the Roaring ’20s were back the night before Halloween as partygoers filled the Omni Hotel Nashville for the 12th annual Dancing for Safe Haven. The evening’s energy was electric as guests showed off their flapper dresses and dapper attire during the cocktail hour and enjoyed two signature cocktails, Karen’s Fancy Flappy French 75 and Ken & Kyle’s “Gatsby Style” Old Fashioned, named for the three co-chairs, Kyle Allen, Karen Hingtgen and Ken Williamson. Once everyone was seated in the ballroom, the show’s three hosts, Kelly Sutton, Woody Wood (dressed as Tom Hanks’ popular Saturday Night Live character David S. Pumpkins) and Jim Chandler, warmed up the already jazzed audience. The co-chairs then joined professional dancers from The Ballroom of Nashville for a rousing performance of various styles of dances from the 1920s. Dinner was served, and patrons enjoyed a menu of dance-themed dishes, including a tango tomato salad, a foxtrot filet of beef with shrimp and the pasodoble dessert, which they also called a “Nashville s’more,” made with Valrhona ganache bombe, house-made marshmallow and graham cracker crumble with a strawberry splatter. Finally, the main event kicked off with Harry Allen of Studio Bank dancing a foxtrot with partner Juanita Simanekova. The livestreamed competition was fierce as the routines thrilled, amazed, humored and even got a little steamy. Judges Heather Byrd, Marcela Gomez and Marcus Whitney praised each routine and raised emoji signs, instead of numbers, after each couple performed. Kearstin Patterson and Christopher Wayne won the Judges’ Favorite Award, Justin Pitt and Mallory Evan won the Audience Favorite and Justin also took home the Fundraising Favorite, having raised over $385,000. Between the silent auction and the competitors’ fundraising efforts, the sold-out event brought the 2020 and 2021 total to $805,000 raised for Safe Haven Family Shelter, an organization that provides a much-needed lifeline for Nashville families experiencing homelessness. Beacons of Light The Parthenon and Centennial Park shine at the Conservancy Gala

T

he Conservancy Gala returned to the parking lot in Centennial Park for a second year, but rest assured, this was not your ordinary tailgate party. When the uncertainty surrounding COVID made it difficult to plan any fundraiser, much less a black-tie gala taking place inside the Parthenon, the powers that be, with co-chairs Dee Patel and Vickie Mertz, decided early on to build upon the success of last year’s outdoor party, and the result was dazzling! Flames, sparklers and mini string lights all played into the theme of “Now and Then: Reflection of Lights,” which was inspired by an 1897 photograph from the Centennial Exposition. But nothing could have prepared attendees for the spectacle planned for this night. Erik Anderson of EAMOTION, who creates light shows for major concerts worldwide, delivered an impressive display for the occasion. The sun had just set as the first guests pulled into parking spots with café tables and chairs placed in front of each, but no one sat down for long during the lively cocktail hour. Strangers gathered around Benjamin Goldberg’s fire pit; friends admired the flashy Audi R8 that Mary Follin and Chris Simonsen arrived in; and all were amazed by the fire dancers from Beyond Wings Circus. After a seasonal dinner from Kristen Winston Catering, Centennial Park Conservancy President John Tumminello, Founding President Sylvia Rapoport, and Dee and Vickie made brief remarks. The show held performances from Striking Matches, Kyshona, and Emily West and K.S. Rhoads, with a dramatically lit Parthenon as their backdrop. The big finale, a fireworks display and digital light show lasting 10 minutes, was breathtaking! At the end, everyone lit their sparklers in celebration. There is a lot to celebrate at the Centennial Park Conservancy and its work preserving the park and the Parthenon in partnership with Metro Parks. The most recent accomplishment, revitalizing 19 acres including the Great Lawn and more, was made possible with funds raised at the Conservancy Gala.

Worth the Wait

Sean Brock’s The Continental brings classic American fine dining to Nashville Yards

PHOTOGRAPHS BY EMILY DORIO

Over the last decade, James Beard Award-winning chef Sean Brock has become a leading name in Southern cuisine, and one of his newest ventures in Nashville, The Continental, finally opened its doors this fall. Sean had the restaurant ready to go in September 2020 and had even begun accepting reservations, but the sudden spike in coronavirus cases in Tennessee stalled his plans. Now, the restaurant is officially open and serving up his unique style of American fare and fine dining. With new takes on classic dishes from a bygone era, Sean brings more than Southern flavors to The Continental. Spanning the range of the continent, from oysters and caviar to venison and prime rib and from pâté en croute to Hudson Valley foie gras, you never know what you might find on the menu. Located on the ground level of the new Grand Hyatt Nashville, with views of its historic neighbors, the Frist Art Museum and Union Station, The Continental offers the Nashville Yards a truly sophisticated dining experience. With a first-class train car aesthetic perfected by Nick Dryden of Dryden Architecture + Design that harkens back to a time when the Frist was a major post office and Union Station still hosted trains and their passengers, The Continental pays tribute to the great American hotels and restaurants throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. BY JONATHAN SIMS

WHAT TO EXPECT

WHY VISIT

WHAT TO ORDER

Reservations for the month open at 9 a.m. on the first day of the preceding month, so expect to make a reservation long in advance. While the menu is prix fixe, there are plenty of surprises heading your way throughout the evening. Some walk-in slots are available at the bar, but those are first come, first served. Either way, make yourself comfortable, because the full service will last about three hours, and the experience is well worth every minute.

If you appreciate classic, continental American food and an elevated dining experience, The Continental is a master class in both. Many dishes are served with elegant tableside cart service, which adds a little theater to the meal without feeling like a sideshow. And every dish has a little Sean Brock twist on it that you won’t find anywhere else. There is little chance you’ll leave without a story to tell.

With a prix fixe menu, the only things you need to worry about are the entrée and the dessert. For your first time there, you would be remiss if you didn’t order the prime rib cart, which has a good chance of becoming your favorite steak in town. Make sure you take advantage of the incredible bar service, which offers a superb martini menu and a roster of classic cocktails.

STEP INSIDE

SECOND TO NONE There is 24,000 square feet of meeting and event space — all on the second floor — featuring three ballrooms, which, when combined, can accommodate up to 500 guests seated. Other highlights include the WET Deck, with a large L-shaped pool, cabanas and a pool bar, and Proof, a rooftop bar to be enjoyed inside or out. Four sliding garage doors can be opened so guests may enjoy a glass of wine, a craft cocktail and a bite to eat while taking in the spectacular view.

THE WOW FACTOR The rooms have a clean, modern feel with wood floors and leather headboards. Commissioned artwork by Brooklyn-based studio FAILE adds interest and color to an otherwise neutral palette. The hotel’s higher-end suites are called either WOW or Extreme WOW. The latter is equivalent to a presidential suite. Suite guests have access to The Welcome Den, a cozy workspace in the main lobby, to relax, do a little work or just have a drink. Depending on the season, rooms range in price from $500 to $6,000 for an Extreme WOW suite.

Warm Welcome The W Nashville hotel offers local art, music and great food The much-anticipated W Nashville recently opened in the Gulch, and the result is an iconic brand infused with a serious dose of Music City. Local artwork is featured throughout the hotel, including a Jimi Hendrix mural by Bryan Deese on the outside of the building and embossed, hand-stitched leather panels in the elevators by Lockeland Leather. Another nod to Nashville is a collection of original prints of legendary musicians, including Johnny Cash, by famed photographer Jim Marshall. David Cronin, general manager of W Nashville, explains that there was a time, as recently as 10 to 15 years ago, that travelers wanted a hotel chain that would ensure a predictable environment, regardless of the city, or even country, they were in. There was a comfort in knowing that the wallpaper in the hallways, the color scheme in the guest rooms and the items on the restaurant menus would be consistent from hotel to hotel. But consumer tastes change and evolve. “Now, customers are looking for that local vibe, that local feel,” David says. In the lobby, in an ode to Music City, one wall is covered with large, colorful paintings of treble clef notes. Another significant piece of artwork in the hotel’s collection, located right behind the reception desk, is an original Jim Dine, titled “Atlantic Love Letter,” depicting a pair of hearts. The W has always been known for its attention to art and design. When it first opened in midtown Manhattan in 1998, it attracted a who’s who of creative types. Created by Starwood Hotels and particularly popular with millennials, the brand soon boasted properties all over the world. Marriott International acquired Starwood in 2016. These days, guests range from those in their 20s to their 70s. “Our customer has grown up,” David says. “I think [our demographic] is people who kind of follow the beat of their own drum, versus ‘I’m going to follow the crowd.’ So, people who are interested in music, art, fashion.” The 14-story Nashville hotel offers 286 rooms and 60 suites and was designed by the New York City-based Rockwell Group and HKS Architecture out of Dallas. The hotel’s seven food and beverage offerings include two restaurants from James Beard Award winner Andrew Carmellini: The Dutch, serving American fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Carne Mare, an Italian chophouse that is open for dinner. For quick grab-and-go options, there’s a coffee bar by Nashville favorite Barista Parlor. All are designed to appeal to locals, as well as hotel guests. Expert etiquette advice from John Bridges

A GIFT UNGIVEN A couple of my boyfriends are planning to throw their holiday party again this year. They’ve hosted a big party every year forever, but they didn’t get to have one last year, for obvious reasons. I know they’re planning to throw one again because they told me about it. Now, it appears that I’m not invited. The usual crowd have all gotten their email invites but not me. Because we’ve all been through such a tough time, I’ve already bought them a gift. I guess I’m left out, but I’ve already got the present. Tell me what to do with it. — Anonymous, Hillsboro/West End Your friends seem to have gotten your hopes up, maybe by mistake, but perhaps they’re confused, this time, about your email. That does happen. Unless there’s been an unpleasantness among you, there’s no reason to think that they’re picking on you by leaving you out. If you’re willing to take the risk, go ahead and ask to be asked, but know that you may be asking for trouble. Or go ahead and ask one of your friends, who you’re sure has made the cut, to check with the party boys to make sure they double-check their directory. That way, you’re almost sure to be added — if only as an afterthought. Now, however, you’re left with a present on your hands. If it’s nothing you can use and you can’t think of anybody else who’d want it, drop it off at your boyfriends’ house — not on the day of the party, of course. You intend well this year, so why wait? Your gift celebrates life getting back almost to normal, if only almost. Everybody may learn a little something from this experience. In the meantime, check your spam folder.

PASSING SHOT I’m afraid my ex-girlfriend is going to give my parents a holiday gift, just like she did last year. She and I haven’t been in touch since I moved out a couple of years ago, and she wasn’t close at all to my folks, even when we were living together. Our breakup was nasty, but last year, the week before Christmas, a package showed up on their doorstep. It was a framed picture of the two of us. My parents didn’t know what to do. She may be planning to pull the same sort of trick again. How do I stop her? — Anonymous, SoBro The two of you obviously haven’t made a trip to the photographer’s studio in a while. You know her better than I do, but another photo is unlikely to show up this time around. Your parents got the frame, and they’ve probably done with it as they please. Doing nothing was just fine, too. That’s the easy solution to their dilemma and to yours. Your ex has no way of knowing what became of the frame or the photo. The picture, which may have been a little act of vengeance on her part, is unlikely to become an annual tradition. It’s time for you to let the past go, even if she can’t.

Let the Children Play Looking back at the history of Phillips Toy Mart

If you walked into Phillips Toy Mart today, with its wide array of goods, it would be hard to imagine that it was originally a hardware and variety store that sold only a few toys. In 1946, founder Powell Wallis Phillips opened the doors to West End Toyland on 30th Avenue North and West End, and by 1949, the store moved to Eighth Avenue South. The beloved Belle Meade location was established in the mid-1970s, and countless people have cherished memories of getting their first baby doll or little green army men there. This year marks the Nashville institution’s 75th anniversary, and Phillips Toy Mart remains family-owned and continues to bring smiles to kids of all ages all year long.
