Christmas is almost here, and surely I’m not the only one who feels all is not calm and all is not bright. It’s been a rough year, month, week or even day, for that matter, and joy feels as if it’s in short supply at times. This is not how I typically feel going into my favorite time of year, but here we are. It’s been a season of loss and loneliness, and we all deserve the chance to grieve. That being said, I have found many things to be grateful for this year. For starters, you! In our 27-year history, Nfocus has never faced challenges like what 2020 has thrown our way. For a publication devoted to covering more than 300 events a year, a global pandemic has sure shaken things up. Even in the midst of all of that, our readers and advertisers have shown us such unwaver-

ing support. I am so appreciative of all the letters, phone calls and gifts you have sent to cheer us on. Thank you for your loyalty to this magazine and your friendship to our team. It has truly meant the world to us. I’m also incredibly thankful for this city. Nashville has, once again, shown its kindness and selflessness this year — first, with the overwhelming response to the tornadoes in March and, later, to the healthcare workers, small businesses and nonprofits in desperate need of support throughout the pandemic. This holiday season, I hope you’ll take time to reflect on what you’re grateful for and how you can serve your neighbor. Spread some kindness in these remaining days of 2020. We could all use it.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Designing Woman Interior designer and Porter Flea co-founder Katie Vance gives us a master class in crafts Katie Vance inherited her love for design from her mom. The pair made and sold a line of purses, Tomato Totes, while Katie pursued a degree in interior design. Today, Katie has a full plate. By day, the Middle Tennessee native is a partner and the interior design director at Nashville’s Powell Architecture + Building Studio. Among her recent projects are Saint Elle, The Russell and Of Note’s Note House, where we photographed her. Currently, she is finishing up The Basics work on Audrey, Sean Brock’s ode to Appalachian Name: Katie Vance food, which is expected to Profession/Title: Partner and open in East Nashville in interior design director at Powell the coming year. Architecture + Building Studio/ Katie’s other passion is co-founder and co-owner of Porter Flea Porter Flea. As a maker, Hometown: Murfreesboro she visited lots of markets Zip Code: 37206 outside of Nashville, and Years in Nashville: 15 years, when other vendors startwith a farm stint mixed in ed pleading for a show Number of vendors in here, she thought she upcoming Porter Flea: Over would give it a shot. She 150! Woo-hoo! and her husband, Holler Design’s Matt Alexander, co-founded Porter Flea with Brent Elrod and Jessica Maloan Vastagh as a vendor-centric, handmade, modern craft market with a mission to further the craft movement in America. The first one, held in July 2011, welcomed 35 vendors, and the semiannual show continues to grow and will host more than 150 artisans this month. Like so many other events this year, Porter Flea will operate as a virtual market, Porter in Place, with the “doors” opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, and running through the next day. When we caught up with her, Katie had just finished reviewing and selecting vendors for the upcoming market, and she let us in on some advice for makers, three people she’d invite to dinner and the one luxury she can’t live without. To learn more about Porter Flea, visit porterflea.com. BY HOLLY HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPH BY ERIC ENGLAND

How can people participate in Porter in Place this year? Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, just log onto porterflea.com, and we will have 150 vendors with all-new handmade, giftable goods waiting for you to purchase! We will also be offering free local pickup options, if you are able to pick up in Nashville. Why is it important to support local makers? It’s so important to support local makers and small businesses. They are the fabric of our community — the creativity, the drive, the heart. What piece of advice would you give someone who wants to start showing their works at markets like Porter Flea? I would say pick your top three makers you admire, and start listing similarities you see between them — branding, website, product quality, etc. You should start to see a pattern of where you should start focusing your business. When you have out-of-town guests visiting, where do you take them? I would definitely say Rolf & Daughters, Redheaded Stranger, Dino’s, Two Ten Jack and O-Ku for restaurant starters, and I would tell them to stay at The Russell hotel.

For some peace and quiet, what do you do or where do you go? I love to walk my sweet rescue dog, Dottie, around our neighborhood. I purposely do not bring along headphones so I can just enjoy the walk with her and get some quiet time. What’s your favorite local event besides Porter Flea? I love the Titans and the Predators, so I definitely always love catching a game. Live on the Green is always a blast. What is one luxury you can’t live without? Wine. Does wine count? If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Ruth Bader Ginsburg — to tell her thank you for everything she has done for women in this country. Oprah — because I just need to know everything about her and would love to pick her brain on business. Anthony Bourdain — who doesn’t want to know more about food and amazing places? What’s the one thing you hope never changes in Nashville? The collaborations. Nashville is so special in that we want to support each other and work together. I love seeing artist collabs.

What restaurants have you missed most during the pandemic? The Green Pheasant and Marché, for sure.

o celebrate its 60th year as a public institution, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens had exciting plans for the important milestone, but as with everything else in 2020, those were put on hold due to the pandemic. Fortunately, Cheekwood was able to reopen with procedures that ensure the health and safety of visitors and to reschedule exhibits and events. One such event was the annual Cheekwood Society Dinner, held to thank the nonprofit’s most generous donors. The Cheekwood Society Garden Stroll was a clever, comfortable and safe alternative to the springtime cocktail party. On a perfect fall evening, guests had the 55-acre property to themselves to view Chihuly at Cheekwood and recent renovations to the grounds. Bars along the route held libations and snacks, as well as plenty of space to catch up with friends at a proper distance. When dusk fell and the lights came on, the glass sculptures took on such an impressive glow that conversations were paused to admire them. During a brief program, Board Chair Lisa Manning and President and CEO Jane MacLeod thanked everyone before recognizing the night’s honorees. The Jane and Guilford Dudley Award for Excellence in Philanthropy went to Kat and Pete DeLay, whose breadth and depth of support, both behind the scenes and hands-on, has made a lasting impact. FirstBank was given the Corporate Award for Excellence in Philanthropy as a longstanding institutional partner of many happenings. The most touching part occurred when Jim Hunt received The James A. Webb III Award for Extraordinary Service to Cheekwood. The first-time award, established last year in memory of Jimmy Webb, celebrates the late leader’s service and commitment. Jim and Jimmy were longtime friends, whose shared appreciation and work on behalf of Cheekwood took the gardens to new levels. Thanks to the contributions of the honorees and the generosity of donors, Cheekwood will continue bringing inspiration, art, gardens and history to the public. The Cheekwood Society Garden Stroll showed supporters the impact of their benevolence. BY HOLLY HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY ERIC ENGLAND

Having a Ball The Swan Ball Committee Kick-Off is a drive-thru success

F

or the first time since February, the Swan Ball’s enthusiastic committee gathered together to celebrate the Cheekwood fundraiser and gala. Well, kind of. The white-tie gala was canceled this summer due to COVID-19, but co-chairs Mary Catherine McClellan and Janette Smith are working hard to reimagine the 2021 ball and its ancillary events to bring this prestigious fundraiser back in a safe way. Their out-of-the-box thinking was on display at the drive-thru Committee Kick-Off. Melanie Baker hosted the clever “party” at the home — or rather, in the driveway — of Elizabeth and Donnie Nichols. One by one, committee members arrived in the safety of their own vehicles and made a quick stop to retrieve their committee packets and some festive goodies without ever leaving their cars. In addition to their official Swan Ball materials, guests received an adorable box of lemon rosemary shortbread cookies, a ribbon-tied bottle of Bottega Rose Gold Prosecco and a custom gray linen Swan Ball mask. Magnificent floral arrangements from Jen Solesby Design flanked the gift table, and an eye-catching balloon display from Caitlin Colcolough adorned the mailbox. About 80 committee members dropped by during the 90-minute festivities, and some even brought along friends. Joyce Vise arrived early with her sweet pup, Sugar, and Karyn Frist had two adorable grandkids, fresh from the pool, in the backseat when she made an appearance. “Who shows up to a Swan Ball party in their swimsuit with two of their grandkids?” Karyn joked as she pulled up. The unconventional event seemed to be a hit among committee members and certainly set the stage for a year of creative ingenuity by Mary Catherine and Janette. With a theme of “Imagine, Reimagine,” the 2021 Swan Ball is likely going to look very different than it has in its 59-year history, but this hardworking team seems up to the challenge. Everyone will just have to wait for June 5, 2021, and see.

Still Swinging The Harpeth Conservancy reimagines the annual River Swing

O

n a perfect October evening, a small assortment of Harpeth Conservancy supporters came together for the 17th annual River Swing, but like most events this year, the gathering looked a little different. Safety was at the top of the nonprofit’s mind when planning the outdoor party, so they took every precaution to keep attendees safe and at an appropriate distance from one another. The guest list was limited considerably, which helped ensure that every table was only filled with people who are already in the same social bubble. For further safety, the tables were spread far apart, and everyone was required to wear a mask as they roamed the grounds. Just a couple days before the party, ardent champion of the Harpeth Conservancy and River Swing co-host Agneta Currey passed away, leaving a noticeable absence at the annual event. The fundraiser had to quickly be moved to the home of Harpeth Conservancy President and CEO Dorie Bolze, but the team pulled off a stunning event, nonetheless. With string lights crisscrossing the open field at dusk, gorgeous autumn-themed tablescapes and torches lighting the pathway, it was a beautiful evening that would have made Agneta proud. Attendees enjoyed cocktails, wine and charcuterie boxes from WillCo Wine and Cheese, and the delicious meal of sliced brisket, grilled chicken and veggies, cornbread and an autumnal kale salad was catered by Puckett’s. Partygoers ate, drank, browsed the online auction and chatted while listening to live music from J.B. Strauss and friends (along with a little bit from Adam Wakefield). The Harpeth Conservancy’s mission is to restore and protect Tennessee’s rivers and their surrounding ecosystems. In a year when so many have found comfort and solace in natural spaces, the reimagined River Swing served as an apt reminder of why conservation is more important than ever.

he day was gloomy, gray and a bit chilly, but that did nothing to dampen spirits for Sunday in the Park, the Friends of Warner Parks’ beloved fall fundraiser. Instead of celebrating under the big tent on Ridge Field, people reserved box lunches and were encouraged to create their own experience in the parks’ 3,200 acres. A steady stream of cars drove through the Belle Meade Boulevard entrance to pick up gourmet picnics — more than 600 of them! — from Kristen Winston Catering and, of course, admire the recently restored Allée. The historic picnic shelters in Percy Warner Park provided one delightful alternative to the traditional affair. Easy to find and socially distanced from one another, the structures gave some attendees the time and space to enjoy their families and friends on their “quaranteams.” At one clearing, four generations of Bill Davis’ family came together, and his great-grandchildren ran with abandon around their Beech Grove spot. Elsewhere, the Lipman-Wieck pod had a cozy fire going at their Indian Springs location. By holding get-togethers in the shelters, supporters also experienced one of the Friends’ major accomplishments. The nonprofit restored every shelter in the parks in 2013, including the site of Kristin and Don Taylor’s intimate gathering. Prior to the project, only a slab and a tumbled down chimney remained. The cedar and limestone structures were built by the Works Progress Administration during the height of the Great Depression and provided an environmental oasis and momentary respite from the stress of that era. The Warner Parks still contribute to the community’s wellbeing, perhaps more than ever. The public has flocked there since the pandemic began, confirming that the miles of paved, hiking and horse trails indeed make them “Our Sanctuary in the City.” While everyone may have missed gathering under the big tent, the reimagined Sunday in the Park was a grand success and reminded everyone of the importance of the Warner Parks. A Brunch With Heart Kati Lohr, Nicole T

The annual H.A.R.T. Brunch gives hope for addiction recovery

Paige Daniels, Tracey Levine, Heather Asbury, Sally Rose

n a beautiful fall morning at the Hillwood Country Club, an intimate group gathered on the patio for the fifth annual H.A.R.T. Brunch co-chaired by Amy Sovine and Cynthia Freeman. Founded in 2011 by Kati Lohr and Cal Turner III, H.A.R.T. (Helping Access Recovery and Treatment) was created when the two friends were considering how best to help those suffering with addiction get the treatment they needed. For the past nine years, the organization has been able to fund treatment for many people who would otherwise not have a path to recovery. While enjoying a hearty, traditional breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits with jam, potatoes and fruit, guests listened to testimonials from two recipients of the organization’s assistance. One recipient, who sent a video message, is now a licensed therapist, and the other moved here from San Francisco because she had heard that Nashville is the top city for addiction recovery success. Their emotional accounts of their struggles and the hope and help that H.A.R.T. gave them brought tears to many eyes. After taking a few moments for guests to fill out donation cards, keynote speaker Miles Adcox, life coach and CEO of Onsite, spoke passionately about the need for addiction recovery assistance and how important the organization is to helping so many others with the message of “what we can’t do alone, we can do together.” As donors left, they were given an incredibly generous gift of free access to Onsite’s “30 Days of Living Centered” virtual program, described as “a practical roadmap to creating the rhythms and habits that will establish the foundation of an emotionally healthy lifestyle, no matter what life throws your way.” With the funds raised at the brunch, H.A.R.T. hopes to help 100 more people with the financial assistance they need to turn their lives around. Wonder Women The Conservancy Gala Drive-In celebrates women’s right to vote

J

ust hours after Kamala Harris was announced as the first female vice president-elect in U.S. history, about 200 guests — safely distanced, masked and outdoors, of course — gathered at the Parthenon to celebrate the centennial of women’s right to vote at the revamped Conservancy Gala. The gala’s theme, Then & Now: Women Beat the Odds, was determined months ago, but Harris’ glass ceiling-shattering win added an extra air of gaiety to the festivities. The typically black-tie gala was transformed into an upscale drive-in movie for the fundraiser, which supports Centennial Park and the Parthenon. Thanks to the efforts of co-chairs Melinda Buntin and Stefanie Rome and longtime Conservancy champion Sylvia Rapoport, the night was a smashing success. As guests arrived at the park, they received a goodie bag full of essentials for the evening — a throw blanket, a fan, a Conservancy Gala face mask and some noisemakers. They also received a battery-operated votive candle that served to alert caterers when they were ready for their carside meal delivery or needed assistance, allowing many to never leave their vehicles. Jugglers and stilt walkers roamed through the parking lot, and the large screens aired performances from local musicians, in addition to trivia questions about women in history, as many guests ventured to outdoor bars to sample suffrage-inspired cocktails created by The Hermitage Hotel. The Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument was a popular destination, as was the women’s suffrage exhibit, We Have a Vision, on display in the Parthenon. Partygoers were incredibly respectful of keeping their distance and following the mask mandate as they explored the park before the movie. Guests had plenty of snacks to enjoy during the film. In addition to a dinner catered by Kristen Winston, there was also gourmet popcorn and classic candy for everyone to nibble on while watching Hidden Figures. The Conservancy Gala was a fun, safe and sold-out success and yet another example of how our city’s nonprofits can cleverly and efficiently handle whatever challenges come their way.

The Show Must Go On Going behind the scenes of the Symphony Ball televised special with Keb’ Mo’ and Maren Morris

I

n its 74-year history, the Nashville Symphony has faced more than its fair share of challenges — many occurring in the past two decades alone. But the global recession in 2008, the Nashville Flood of 2010 and the threat of foreclosure in 2014 combined pale in comparison to the ongoing threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In June, three months after the city and live entertainment came to a screeching halt, the Nashville Symphony announced a furlough of 128 full-time staff members and musicians and the cancellation of their 2020-2021 season. In addition to the loss of concert revenue, restrictions on large gatherings have prevented the Symphony from hosting its two signature fundraising events: the Symphony Fashion Show in the spring and the upcoming white-tie Symphony Ball, originally scheduled for Dec. 12. While the Symphony Fashion Show ultimately morphed into intimate shopping events at Gus Mayer, the Symphony Ball, too, will pivot to another format. Thanks to the ingenuity of the Symphony’s remaining staff and the event’s co-chairs, Melinda Balser and Susan Holmes, the show will go on, albeit virtually. Like other nonprofits and event organizers, the Nashville Symphony quickly recognized that the annual white-tie gala, which typically welcomes more than 400 guests to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center each winter, wouldn’t be able to go ahead as planned. Instead, the team plotted a way to bring the Symphony Ball to guests — and the city at large — at home. Partnering with local production company Taillight and WSMV, the Nashville Symphony will present a televised special, An Evening in Harmony, on Dec. 12. Like the Symphony Ball, the event will honor two local musicians with the Harmony Award. This year’s recipients are Keb’ Mo’ and Maren Morris. Both artists, accompanied by a small group of musicians, recorded three songs each at the Schermerhorn in mid-October to be aired on the special.

“The televised special, An Evening in Harmony, promises to be an extraordinary hour of music dedicated to the musicians of the Nashville Symphony,” co-chairs Melinda and Susan told Nfocus. “[The] 2020 Harmony Award recipients Maren Morris and Keb’ Mo’ and their accompanying musicians will engage the audience with their unique sounds over the course of the hour-long special, aired in homes all across the viewing area.” After a great deal of logistical planning and extreme health and safety measures, including rapid-testing for everyone involved, the Nashville Symphony filmed Keb’ Mo’ and Maren’s performances in the center of the spectacular Laura Turner Concert Hall, outfitted for Christmas. “What was great about the way we did it is that [we performed] in the middle of the venue — just smack in the middle of it — which we very rarely get to do,” said Keb’ Mo’. “And just really feel the room and take in the intention of that and all the sweat and effort and the generosity that went into making this room and creating this space for the arts to exist. The room is a work of art; everything is a work of art. When there’s no one in here, you really focus on the room. It’s kind of like the room is haunted by joy or something.” Maren, whose three-song set includes her awardwinning single “The Bones,” approached the space with a sense of reverence, as well. “We obviously didn’t want to come in, guns blazing, with our full track production,” she told us. “We wanted to honor the space that was [built] to have live orchestral music in it, so we really pared it back. My keyboard player was playing a beautiful piano they provided, [and] he also played cello. We really wanted to do our version of the symphony with these three songs.”

The result is a beautiful, thoughtful and moving miniconcert by each artist that showcases their talent and the power of live music. In addition to their performances, the televised special will also include the Harmony Award presentation, a distinction that moved both artists. “I’m honored to be receiving an award,” Maren said. “I love coming to see performances here, so it is sad to see it empty. But I am hoping — even as a live musician, myself — that we can all get back to work soon. It’s still nice — even in times like this — to celebrate that we get to do this for a living. … To be honored by a different sector of musical existence that is here in our own Music City, I think it’s wonderful.” “I don’t know why they’re honoring me,” Keb’ Mo’ added with a laugh. “There’s a whole lot of people they could’ve honored. I don’t need to know why, but I know it’s a big honor, and I’m just going to say that I feel very grateful and honored to be in the position to do this.” Not only will the special celebrate the two artists, it’ll pay tribute to the Nashville Symphony’s illustrious history. Expect to see familiar faces popping up throughout the program to share what the Symphony and its education programs mean to the city. The televised special, which will air for free, is also designed to be a fundraiser for the organization. Supporters can party at home, thanks to an array of patrons packages being offered on the Nashville Symphony’s website. Ranging in price from $1,500 to $25,000, the packages come with an array of special perks, including everything from Champagne delivery to a catered dinner from Kristen Winston to an executive producer credit on the special. The funds raised from the virtual Symphony Ball, like always, will support the Nashville Symphony’s education programs. The importance of these programs and the Nashville Symphony’s overall impact on the city is a large part of why Keb’ Mo’ and Maren wanted to participate in the event. After filming their performances, both artists reflected on the crucial role that music education played in their upbringings.

“I went to a very underfunded music program in high school,” Maren said. “So I think it’s always been a passion for me to give back to the kids that don’t go to the nice high schools with all the brand new instruments and amazing uniforms and transportation to go to different cities to compete.” For Keb’ Mo’, growing up with a symphony orchestra in his town was an important part of his musical journey. “When a city has a symphony, it gives the town culture,” he said. “It gives it something that’s really beautiful. I’m from Compton, California, and Compton is known for rap and gangs, but when I moved to Compton in 1958 and all through my high school years, Compton had a symphony orchestra. And they had a youth orchestra, and I was able to be in that orchestra. … And I remember when, all of a sudden, that wasn’t there anymore. It kinda took something out of the town.” In light of all the hardships facing the Nashville Symphony, the gala co-chairs are encouraging the community to rally around this important arts institution. “This year, more than any other, it is critical for the Nashville community to support the Symphony,” said Melinda and Susan. “Through a myriad of community and school programs, the Symphony brings music and music education to tens of thousands of children and adults each year. The Symphony is a critical component of our community, and we ask that you give generously to support us in these unprecedented times.” Nashville Symphony CEO and President Alan Valentine is confident that the special will be “a night to remember” that will “go down in history.” And although the pandemic seems to be only getting worse, Alan is hopeful about the future of the Symphony. “We don’t know how [the pandemic] is going to play out,” he said, “but what we do know is that music always triumphs. Music has the ability to express that for which there are simply no words, and it’ll be music in Nashville that helps us heal as a community.” An Evening in Harmony will air on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. on WSMV/ NewsChannel 4. At Work With Nfocus ‘Tis the season to stuff the stockings and trim the tree, and where better to find great gifts than local shops and brands? In a year that has wreaked havoc on small businesses, we encourage you to show your support to the people who have built their companies right here in Nashville. We caught up with five local business owners to see how they’ve been weathering the pandemic, their favorite local products and stores, what they’re missing most this winter and what they wish you knew about their business.

Sue Joyce

How has your business changed as a result of the pandemic? At first, we were worried — like everyone. We work hard to support our retail stores, and of course, they were shut down. We were able to make ends meet, but most rewarding for us were the wonderful notes and messages we received from our customers. The world of Turkish towels has become very competitive since we introduced them to the U.S. over 10 years ago. I did have a moment of wondering if this was a moment to change directions, but the outpouring of kind words

and encouragement from our followers gave us a renewed energy. They explained how much they enjoyed our towels and [that] they could count on our quality and style to be the leader in the market. They sent prayers of hope to hang on, so we did. What’s your favorite holiday tradition? The Boulevard Bolt on Thanksgiving. It’s a catchall of seeing your friends and family, getting great exercise and raising money to help others. What’s not to like? What’s your favorite locally made product? Music. It’s

what makes our city special. Think of all the magic being made right now. What’s one thing you wish everyone knew about your products? We work hard to have transparency. I was originally attracted to the looming of the Turkish towels because I realized they were made in the old looms and that the Turkish women were the ones that worked tying the tassels. I loved everything about these casual cotton pieces of art and the idea of the income [going] to the Muslim women made me happy. It was something I >>

wanted to invest my time doing. I had no idea it would take off and become the commodity product that it is today. Turkish towels are copied everywhere now. No matter where these flatweave, tied-tassel towels are produced, they are referred to as Turkish towels or Turkish-T’s. You will find them in catalogs and stores everywhere, made from China, India or Portugal, but they go by the name Turkish towel. It has been really rewarding to be part of a team that changed the way people think about towels.

Barrett Ward ABLE

How did you get your start with ABLE? My wife and I were living in Ethiopia, and three women who had come out of the commercial sex industry said they needed a job or they would have to return to a life they desperately wanted to escape. When asked what they wanted to do, the idea of them making and selling scarves eventually came up, and voilà, a fashion company was born. What’s the best local shop to buy a gift? White’s Mercantile! They carry ABLE, and [they] have an incredible curation of a wide array of unique products that would give you a can’t-miss opportunity to find something special. What’s your favorite locally made product? Ranger Station candles — made locally in Nashville, beautiful scents, and when the candle is done burning, you’re left with a nice whiskey glass. What event or outing are you missing most this winter? Music! Thanks, 2020. We are in Nashville, Tennessee, dang it. Thankfully, I’m >>

friends with Jon McLaughlin, and he’s not afraid to fire up the piano and get a dance party started with a few adults and a bunch of kids. What’s one thing you wish everyone knew about ABLE? I think we’re pretty clear about our commitment to women, especially those lacking opportunity, and how we’re fighting for greater transparency in the fashion industry to the challenges it faces. With that said, I wish everyone could be a fly on the wall at ABLE at some point and see just how serious this team of 96 percent women is about doing genuine good in the world and how thoughtful and strategic they are about spreading that mission. What’s your favorite item in the collection right now? Our jewelry is made here locally by our team, and because the pieces are handmade, there’s an opportunity to personalize them with a word or a phrase or a date. I’m often giving those to people as a gift with a little more meaningfulness and significance.

Susannah Scott-Barnes How has your business changed as a result of the pandemic? We have always wanted to create an environment where people wanted to just come to AshBlue to hang out. AshBlue is a peaceful, fun, exciting place that is constantly changing. Now, more than ever, we are like a shelter in the storm for our customers who just want to escape the realities of life for a moment. fire in the fireplace and playing holiday music. It makes everyone happy.

What’s the best local shop to buy a gift? Is that a trick question?

What’s your favorite locally made product? Ben & Lael copper serving pieces. Ben Caldwell was like a brother to me growing up. His family lived next door, and his dad was my godfather. I might be a little biased, but his work has so much warmth and character that it is an honor to represent him in Nashville.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given? Besides bearing three healthy babies, my favorite gift to give was successfully surprising Zulu on his 50th birthday with his dear friends flying in from far away. What’s your favorite holiday tradition? Having a real

into a crowded pew at church with incredible choral music, especially on Christmas Eve, is what I will miss most this year. What’s your favorite item in the shop right now? I am obsessed with our $169 cordless lamps. They are simple and so versatile, because they can also be used outdoors. Another favorite is a new faux fur blanket that is so dreamy to touch it can take your mind off everything negative from 2020.

AT WORK WITH NFOCUS

How has your business changed as a result of the pandemic? We launched the first of the O.H. Ingram River Aged series this fall, so it’s all we’ve ever known! There’s definitely been challenges, with large events offlimits and restaurants and bars having restrictions, but people are always ready for a good story and a good drink, and that’s what we give them. What’s the best local shop to buy a gift? I like giving books as gifts, and I do all my book shopping at Parnassus Books. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received? When I was 7, my grandfather gave me a Lionel train set. On top of making great memories building onto the layout with him, it taught me to be curious about how things work. That curiosity played a large role leading up to this current venture. What’s your favorite holiday tradition? Every year, my mom’s side of the family gets together in Sipsey, Alabama, at my greatgrandmother’s house for a Christmas celebration. It is usually >>

a full house, with over 70 cousins, and each family is responsible for a particular dish. It is a wonderful time with family, food and stories. What makes O.H. Ingram River Aged Whiskey a great gift? Who doesn’t love a great-tasting bottle of whiskey? We’re a local company that’s making whiskey in a way that separates us from the rest of the industry. If you want to give someone a gift with a great local story behind it, look no further. What event or outing are you missing most this winter? The Symphony Ball. The decorations are always elegant, and I love listening to the Nashville Symphony play with talented artists in such an intimate setting.

Hank Ingram O.H. Ingram River Aged Whiskey

What’s one thing you wish everyone knew about your whiskey? Our whiskey is the only one that spends its entire life on the water, aging from birth to bottle in a first-of-its-kind floating rickhouse that sits right on the Mississippi River. The result is a whiskey that is very smooth and full of character.

Genie Lee

How has your business changed as a result of the pandemic? When COVID first hit, I was working on so much adrenaline and coming up with creative solutions on the daily. I even coined myself as Nashville’s Easter Bunny on Instagram. Talk about intense! I was hiding packages in people’s bushes so that the kids wouldn’t see. It felt like people felt more urgency and excitement to shop local in the beginning of the pandemic. COVID has changed everything, from what products people are looking for to the focus on online sales

versus in-store [shopping]. It’s still a work in progress, and I’m consistently trying new things. What’s the best local shop to buy a gift? White’s Mercantile is so beautifully curated, and I always find something for literally anyone in my life. What’s the best gift you ever received? When I was a teen, my favorite movie was Goodfellas. I met one of my closest friends, Jeannine, around then, and she somehow had a group headshot of all the actors with their

autographs. It pains me to say that I’ve lost it! I hope she doesn’t read this. What’s your favorite holiday tradition? Nothing beats getting the house ready for Christmas morning after my boys go to sleep. I can barely sleep myself on that night, and nothing on Earth beats their screams, laughter and excitement when they wake up. What’s your favorite locally made product? There are so many talented makers here in Nashville. At the moment, my favorite is >>

Queen of Cups Handmade. They make the most beautiful tie-dyed prints that make me so happy. If I want to really make an impression, I’ll pick up a custom floral arrangement from the FLWR Shop. They are mini works of art. They recently opened a store in Belle Meade. What’s your favorite item in the shop right now? We have a cement brick castlemaking kit from a German company called Teifoc that I discovered on my sourcing trip to Germany I took right before COVID. My boys (and I) are obsessed.

Holiday Shopping Guide Where to shop for memorable, thoughtful and one-of-a-kind gifts this season

There’s no time like the present to get out your gift list and check it twice. To make your life easier, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite shopping destinations and organized them by neighborhood. Most of our picks are locally owned, with a couple notable exceptions, and if ever there was a year to support small businesses, this is it. Many stores offer online shopping, private appointments and curbside pickup, so check websites and social media or call before grabbing your mask and heading out the door.

Downtown/Germantown/East Nashville

Without a doubt, some of the most adorable shops, offering some of the quirkiest and most beautiful gifts, can be found in Downtown Nashville and its nearby enclaves, Germantown and East Nashville. Never underestimate a museum gift shop as a go-to destination for memorable gifts. The Country Music Hall of Fame, Tennessee State Museum and Frist Art Museum boast an array of artistic and often locally made items for kids and adults alike. In Germantown, don’t miss a visit to the newly opened The Golden Slipper for everything from pretty barware to charming office supplies to men’s grooming products. Nearby Abednego is a great stop for chic women’s clothing and accessories. Since gardening has become everyone’s favorite hobby in 2020, Gardens of Babylon, located in the Nashville Farmers’ Market, is essential for indoor and outdoor plants and stunning pots and planters. Venture across the river to East Nashville for a stroll through the Shoppes on Fatherland, where you can find unique gifts, like a Dolly Parton bandana or a cocktail calendar, at Gift Horse or treats for your fur babies at Baxter Bailey & Company. For the book lovers on your list, a visit to The Bookshop is a must, and be sure to swing by Welcome Home for a beautiful selection of home goods, kids’ toys, jewelry and more. Next door, Lemon Laine’s selection of beauty products and cosmetics make the perfect gift for any lady on your list — or as a way to reward yourself for a long day of shopping! nfocusmagazine.com

Historic Downtown Franklin is worth a visit in any season, but it’s particularly festive during the holidays, and with dozens of boutiques, it’s a one-stop shop for all your gift-giving needs. For the hostess on your list (or to simply stock up for any upcoming celebrations), stop by The Registry and Hester & Cook and nab everything you’ll need to deck the halls and set the table. Holly Williams’ White’s Mercantile always stocks an expertly curated selection of Tennesseemade gifts and goodies, as well as home goods, clothing, pet supplies and accessories, and Rock Paper Scissors is a must-visit for gorgeous gift-wrapping supplies. For chic home décor and accessories, be sure to pop in at Onyx & Alabaster and The Iron Gate, both of which have been transformed into a winter wonderland. Just a short jaunt away, O.P. Green Hills

Only three-fourths of a mile long and a half-mile at its widest, the Green Hills retail district has an abundance of stores — many exclusive to the region. The Mall at Green Hills draws shoppers from all over, lured by luxury brands, like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Nordstrom, plus 100 more stores and eateries. And, good news — Gus Mayer recently added shoes to its inventory of in-style women’s clothing and accessories. Shop Private Edition and sister store The Cosmetic Market for their array of makeup, skincare, hair and fragrance lines, because we still want to look and feel our best. For fantastic home accessories, jewelry and more, stop at AshBlue. In a new location with a new name, Margi’s Furniture & Design lets you know there’s more than just chairs inside. Hill Center clothing stores H. Audrey, Oak Hall and Vineyard Vines all carry many fashionable items for her and him. Visit Vincent Peach, Kendra Scott, Genesis Diamonds or King Jewelers for dazzling items sure to brighten anyone’s holiday. Finally, it’s not a trip to Green Hills without a stop at Parnassus Books so you can trim the tree with books, puzzles, toys and gifts.

One road has three names and lots of variety when it comes to finding just the right gift. On West End Avenue, Cumberland Transit has something for the biking and outdoor enthusiasts, while J. Michael’s Clothiers and Haymakers & Co. hold dapper items for the men in your life. If you haven’t already, check out Duke’s General Store, the shop inside White Bridge Auto Wash, for an eclectic collection of goodies and snacks. Harding Pike is home to Phillips Toy Mart, the family-owned toy store that has been making kids of all ages happy since 1946. Both Creekside Garden Center and FLWR Shop have wonderful selections of plants and great things to put them in. In Westgate Center on Highway 100, G&G Interiors boasts an exquisite selection of gifts, art and home accessories, and The Kitchen Nashville’s assortment of cookware, bakeware and more is outstanding. If you missed the West End location, The French Shoppe is here, too, with clothing and accessories for all your favorite ladies. The last destination on Highway 100 is Stanford Contemporary Gallery, because aren’t we all tired of looking at our same old walls?

While everyone knows that some of the most popular shopping for those visiting Nashville is in 12South and Hillsboro Village, locals shouldn’t shy away from these areas for excellent gifts this holiday season, especially if you’re shopping for the most fashionable person on your list. In 12South, you’ll find the newest and cutest styles at Kimberly Lewis’ Emerson Grace or something a little edgier at Hero or imogene + willie. If you’re looking to add a little sparkle to your loved one’s eyes, then check out Judith Bright for gorgeous handmade jewelry. Holly Williams’ White’s Mercantile is the modern general store for adorable home goods and more, and Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James is like a ray of sunshine in clothing form. For more fun and playful looks for the young and the young at heart, head over to Molly Green in Hillsboro Village, which is just two doors down from Arcade, the perfect shop for upscale kids’ clothes and toys.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS

H iday Cheer 2020 Fun and safe ways to celebrate the season

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and a way to spread cheer without spreading germs! We may all be celebrating differently this year, but we found ways to safely ring in the holidays, thanks to timed entries, virtual alternatives and more. BY HOLLY HOFFMAN

CAROLS, CRAFTS AND COOKIES The popular children’s program is going virtual this year, and each Friday leading up to Christmas, kids and parents will find new activities. As in prior years, you’ll enjoy cookie recipes, art projects and music, plus stories and fun activities for families to do together. Debuting on Facebook on Dec. 4 and available on the museum’s website thereafter. Gratis. Tennessee State Museum, tnmuseum.org/kids.

CHRISTMAS AT THE HERMITAGE There’s something for the whole family at Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage. After enjoying carols and photos with Father Christmas, cap off the night with an after-hours tour of the mansion to see how Andrew and Rachel celebrated the holidays. Dec. 4. $25 per person, $12 per child 5-12. The Hermitage, 4580 Rachels Lane, thehermitage.com/events.

PORTER FLEA Since 2011, this respected artisan market has brought us a thoughtfully curated array of modern handmade goods. This year, the pop-up returns as Porter in Place Holiday, an online virtual market that will take place over two days. Shoppers can keep their PJs on while browsing accessories, clothing, art and more from 150 local and regional vendors. Dec. 5-6. Gratis. Porter Flea, porterflea.com.

ELF If you need a little ho-ho-ho this season, load up the car and head to Franklin’s

drive-in movie theater behind Rolling Hills Community Church. This spirited, good-natured family film is guaranteed to help you discover your inner elf. Curly toed shoes not required. Dec. 11-12. Suggested price $25 per car. The Field at Franklin, 1810 Columbia Ave., Franklin, fieldatfranklin.com.

DICKENS' A CHRISTMAS CAROL Veteran Nashville actor Mark Cabus is bringing his acclaimed one-man production of A Christmas Carol to (home) theaters this year, thanks to TPAC. The show, which Mark has been performing for audiences for 22 years, will be available to the public to stream for free on TPAC's website. Dec. 11-31. Gratis. TPAC, tpac.org.

HOLIDAY HOEDOWN In-person classes at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum are currently on hiatus, but there will be holidaythemed family programming held via Zoom. Activities include crafts, music and, of course, a bit of seasonal country music history fun. Space is limited, and registration is required. Dec. 12 and 19. Gratis. Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, countrymusichalloffame.org/family.

TAYLOR MAC’S HOLIDAY SAUCE … PANDEMIC! Promising to be the most outrageous event of the yuletide season, this livestreamed performance blends music, film, burlesque and “random acts of fabulousness.” The 2020 Ibsen Award winner and MacArthur Fellow, Taylor Mac, and his longtime collaborators join together to create a virtual experience celebrating the holidays in all

of their dysfunction. Dec. 12. $100 per patron, $15 per person. OZ Arts Nashville, ozartsnashville.org.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE It would not be Christmas without seeing It’s a Wonderful Life at the Belcourt Theatre, and fortunately, the elves at the cherished art house are making it happen, even during the pandemic. The theater has reopened but with limited seating. Buy your tickets early, because screenings for this cherished yuletide favorite will sell out even faster than usual. Dec. 18-24. $11 per person, $7.50 per member. Belcourt Theatre, 2102 Belcourt Ave., belcourt.org.

NASHVILLE’S NUTCRACKER The holiday isn’t complete without this heartwarming tradition, and thanks to NewsChannel 5, we can take the sparkling journey through the Land of Sweets and old Nashville from the comfort of our homes. The two-hour production includes narration by former Tennessee Titan Eddie George and a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of this classic. Dec. 18, 24 and 25. Gratis. Nashville Ballet, nashvilleballet.com.

MANUAL CINEMA’S CHRISTMAS CAROL Multimedia collective Manual Cinema delivers two visually stunning livestreamed performances. While the family sits in lockdown, holiday skeptic Aunt Trudy reconstructs her late husband’s A Christmas Carol puppet show for them over Zoom. But soon, the puppets take on a life of their own in this adaptation of the Dickens classic. Dec. 19. $100 per patron, $15 per person. OZ Arts Nashville, ozartsnashvile.org.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS The Williamson County Ag Center becomes a winter wonderland at this drive-thru light spectacular. From the safety of your car, visitors can travel a glittering one-mile route aglow with more than 200 light displays. STEP INSIDE

View From the Top Pam and Steve Taylor’s Arts and Crafts-style Sewanee home is the perfect mountain retreat Pam and Steve Taylor can walk out onto the terrace of their newly built house perched on the side of a mountain in Sewanee and see a herd of buffalo, belonging to a neighbor, roaming the pasture below. Stella, the couple’s golden retriever, and William Blaze, their Welsh corgi, can often be found enjoying the afternoon sun on the nearby boat dock on the lake. For the couple, both lawyers recently retired, it’s the perfect setting for a second home and a new chapter. “In looking for a home, we’re not beach people,” says Pam. “We’re not golfers. We realized what we really like are the mountains. Once we started looking, we thought, Sewanee is an hour and a half from Nashville. It’s accessible. You can go back and forth whenever you need to or want to.” Having the university close by, with its various programs and activities, was also a draw. “We decided we wanted a bluff mountain-view lot and started looking,” says Pam. They found a 6-acre piece of property in a new community, Myers Point, and in 2015, they purchased the land on which to build their dream home — a three-bedroom house with spectacular views from every room. The Taylors enlisted architect Van Pond, landscape architect Ben Page and interior designer Ralph Cadenhead, all of whom they have worked with for years. The 4,500-square-foot Arts and Crafts-style house features an open kitchen, two guest suites and an impressive wine cellar. “They didn’t want the typical cliché mountain house with lots of antlers and plaid blankets and that kind of thing,” says Ralph. “They wanted something that would be appropriate for the mountains and still be very comfortable and livable but sophisticated, as well.” The main consideration was how to most effectively bring the outside in. “We wanted every room, if possible, to take advantage of the views,” says Pam. “That was the main focus. And we wanted it to be open. Steve very much wanted it to be big and open, which is very different from our Nashville house, because our Nashville house is 110 years old, and it’s just a different style.” Most of the square footage is utilized in the living spaces. The kitchen, with two islands — one Calacatta Gold marble, the other, honed black granite — opens up into a large dining and living room area, highlighted by a limestone fireplace. A favorite room of the house is a screened-in porch with a pitched roof, soaring ceiling and stone fireplace. BY WHITNEY CLAY PHOTOGRAPHS BY REED BROWN

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS The color scheme for the main living area started with a patterned oatmeal and leaf green linen fabric featuring magnolia blossoms. It was used for accent pillows and club chairs that flank two oatmeal chenille sofas. “On the inside, we didn’t want to do anything that would stop your eye from immediately looking to the outside,” says Ralph, who chose primarily neutral colors, accented with various shades of blues and greens to echo the trees and the sky, which are in plain sight.

ROOMS WITH A VIEW The master, with a canopy bed and sitting area, is on the main level, and the guest bedrooms are on the lower level. Like the rest of the house, the bedrooms showcase the spectacular sunrises, sunsets and everything in between. “You do not get tired of the view,” says Pam. “And it’s certainly beautiful [in the fall] with the colors beginning to change. It’s beautiful in the spring. We actually find it pretty in the winter, when it’s gray and foggy and raining.”

Nashvillians Britton Catignani and Matt Brown first met in 2009 through mutual friends. Matt proposed 10 years later in June 2019. “He had been trying to plan a special proposal,” said Britton, “but couldn’t wait any longer. I came home from work one Tuesday, and before I walked in the door, he got on one knee and asked me right then and there. Completely took me by surprise!” They planned to marry on Oct. 17, a date special to them as the birthday of Britton’s late father, Daniel Francis Catignani. “Despite COVID-19, we decided to go on with our wedding,” said the bride, “downsizing to immediate family and our closest friends.

Originally, we would have invited 350 guests, but this made for a more intimate and beautiful wedding.” The ceremony took place at the home of Jeanie and Nat Harris. “Matt’s dad and stepmom, Scott and Harkness Brown, married there in 2001,” said Britton. “It’s a gorgeous piece of property tucked away in Nashville, surrounded by old magnolia trees and overgrown bamboo, which made for the perfect backdrop.” Fleming Wood Smith III officiated, and Cody Chelius and Steve Gallagher provided the music. The bride wore a Tulum wedding gown and carried a bouquet by Bloom Flowers. The reception was at the home of Matt’s mother and stepfather, Crissy and Eric Samide, in Franklin.

“We converted their backyard into a beautiful forest,” said the bride. “We lit up all the trees surrounding the pool, rented vintage lounge pieces and decorated a hexagonal tent with flowers and string lights.” Airshow played, Clean Plate Club catered and Sumner Smith coordinated everything. “And we had the most perfect weather,” added the bride. Britton, a graduate of University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, is an interior stylist. Her mother and stepfather are Angela and Christopher Rice. Matt, an alumnus of University of Tennessee, is a software developer.

GO PAPER-FREE

nretrospect in every issue

The holidays are upon us, and I’m determined to say thanks to the people who are helping us through this horrible situation, but I don’t know how. I’ve thought about giving a gift to the support groups for the firefighters and the police officers, but that doesn’t include everybody. I’ve thought about making a donation to Second Harvest, since that seems to affect everybody. But I’d like the people out there on the front lines — the hospital workers, the woman who delivers my mail and even the people in the grocery store — to know what I’ve done. I’m sure posting on Facebook won’t do it. I just want people to know that I’m trying. Please help. — Anonymous, Hillsboro-Belmont You’re doing the admirable thing. Donations to the police and fire department support organizations or to Second Harvest are perfect choices, except that, you’re right; the people on the front lines — especially the cashier and baggers at the grocery store — are unlikely to know about them. They’re not doing what they do for anybody’s thanks, of course, but you still want them to know that you’re grateful for their work, which can be life-risking. You can’t be Facebook friends with the world, but you can be frontline friends with the people with whom you’re in contact every day. We’re not supposed to give cash gifts to the people who deliver our mail, and the people who push the cart for us at the grocery store aren’t supposed to take tips. However, saying thank you and waiting patiently in line is always the right thing to do. When you see your mail deliverer, a wave will make her — and you — feel happy. Look everybody in the eye over the top of your mask; they’ll probably know there’s a smile behind it. That’s nice all the time, not just for the holidays.

UNLISTED This year, for the first time in years, I’m planning to send Christmas cards. It was hard enough finding the cards, but now, I’m at a loss for addresses. I used to have a phone book where I could find people’s addresses, but I don’t have one anymore. And almost nobody has a hard line anymore, so it probably wouldn’t help, anyhow. I guess I could call everybody and ask for their addresses, but I don’t know how to reach them. I’ve got the time to address the envelopes, but how? — Anonymous, Oak Hill You’re a little late getting started on this project. You probably don’t have an address book or an old-style Rolodex as backups. Carry a pen and paper with you, and ask people for their contact info when you run into them. That doesn’t happen a lot these days, and you probably want to send cards to people you don’t run into at the gas pump. If you’ve got friends who’ve kept their address books, start with them. After a few calls or emails, you’ll find your list gradually growing. There’s no easy fix right now. If you plan to send cards in the future, keep the files. More Christmases are to come, I bet.

A Carol at Your Door Looking back at Fannie Battle Caroling for Kids

Since 1916, caroling in Nashville has done more than spread holiday cheer. It’s served as an annual fundraiser for the Fannie Battle Day Home for Children. Families would bundle up on Christmas Eve and go door to door, serenading their neighbors for the worthwhile cause. Although singing on doorsteps isn’t a safe option this winter, Caroling for Kids will carry on the tradition for the 104th year, albeit online. Organizers have added what promises to be an adorable caroling competition among the Fannie Battle classrooms. Funds raised provide affordable and accessible high-quality childcare while empowering families to meet their fullest potential. Visit fanniebattle.org to learn more. We promise you won’t have to sing a note.
