Tennessee’s First SMILE New and Minimally-invasive Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years, Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts short pulses is used to make small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue is then removed by the surgeon though the opening which causes the corneal shape to change, permanently changing the prescription. SMILE has a proven track record of success. It has been used internationally since 2011 and more than 750,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Dr. Wang noted that currently, the procedure has not been approved to treat large amounts of astigmatism and cannot treat farsightedness and that LASIK is still a better option for a majority of the patients seeking laser vision correction.
The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was performed in Nashville recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its director, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIYT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics). “We are extremely very excited to be the first again to introduce the next generation laser correction procedure to the state, helping out patients with this new and minimally invasive procedure,” said Dr. Wang. Myopia is a common eye condition in which close objects can be seen clearly but distant objects are blurry without correction. LASIK and PRK have been the main stay treatments for myopia for over two decades. But SMILE, which stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, has unique advantages over LASIK. The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for LASIK. This
helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SMILE is also reduced compared with LASIK, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE. One of the state’s first SMILE patients was Margaret Coleman, 34, a manager of the world-famous Bluebird Café, in Nashville, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville”, among others. Ms. Coleman has had poor eyesight all of her life, legal blind in both eyes without correction. Ms. Coleman’s 3D Laser SMILE procedure went beautifully and she is thrilled to have her crystal clear new vision and newly gained independence on glasses or contacts and being one of the first patients in the state to receive SMILE!
Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), is the CEO of Aier-USA, Director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 doctors. Dr. Wang published 8 textbooks and a paper in the world-renowned journal Nature, holds several US patents and performed the world’s first laser-assisted artificial cornea implantation. He established a 501c(3) non-profit charity, Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration, which to date has helped patients from more than 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dr. Wang is the Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year.

as hard as it is to believe, another Swan Ball has come and gone. The spectacular white-tie gala, which is over a year in the making, feels like one final hurrah before the calmer, slower summer months. I don’t know about you, but our team is certainly ready for a break. We’ve covered well over 100 events since the beginning of the year and are eagerly anticipating a bit of downtime before the fall. And although a quiet summer sounds like a dream, the spring social season ended with a bang. Karee Hays Karee Hays was in her late 30s when she started to notice that just cleansing and moisturizing her skin wasn’t cutting it anymore. “I knew I needed big-girl ingredients,” she says. That need sparked a search that then fueled a passion, and before Karee knew it, she was catapulted onto a new career path. She was fascinated by ingredients — which ones could actually communicate to the cells and actively create change and which products she could save money on and buy at the supermarket. The more she learned, the more she wanted to share all her findings with her friends so that they, too, could have great skin and feel beautiful. She started writing a monthly newsletter that she would share with friends (who would then forward it to their friends), and before she knew it, she was going back to school for advanced aesthetics and studying for years under a dermatologist and then a plastic surgeon before going out on her own seven years ago and starting Karee Hays Esthetics. What drew you to aesthetics? Helping people feel good about their skin and [the idea] that no two people’s skin are the same. What works for one may not work for the other, so I knew that I would never get bored. Even as a young child, I loved the sciences and chemistry and wanted to know how things worked. What’s your favorite part of your job? Wow, there are so many parts of my job that I love! A brand-new client who has never found a regimen that worked. The worse the skin, the more I go on a mission to turn it around from the inside out. Then the reward is making someone feel better and giving them hope. I love teaching people how to care for their skin and educating clients — making Nashville glow! What are your top five favorite products? Only five? I have faves for the face, hair, body — inside and out — but for now: KH custom Koji Pads, Revision Intellishade tinted SPF, Omni Core Recovery Complex serum, Revision DEJ Eye Cream and Vital Proteins Collagen Powder. What’s your favorite beauty secret? Shave your face. Rarely do you see a man with fine vertical lines around their mouth. They begin to age more by the crow’s feet and forehead where they don’t shave. They are getting cellular turnover daily. Check out me shaving my face on my

What’s the most inaccurate beauty myth you’ve heard? That you have to spend a fortune to have great looking skin. Vision of Hope Award Gala Supporters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness gathered at Hillwood Country Club to honor Naomi Judd and Clark Flatt for their notable contributions to the betterment of mental health in the United States. Naomi has opened up about her personal struggle with depression and released River of Time: My Descent Into Depression and How I Emerged With Hope at the end of 2016. Conservancy Gala Kick-Off
Bridge to Equality Luncheon
Committee members and fans of the Conservancy Gala gathered at the home of Colleen Conway-Welch to kick off the fall affair, which takes place Nov. 3 and benefits The Conservancy for the Parthenon and Centennial Park. Co-chairs Mara Papatheodorou and Sarah Sterling excitedly shared that they will again bring the past into the present with “Then & Now: Gondolas and Grottos,” a celebration of the 1897 re-creation of Venice’s Rialto Bridge over Lake Watauga and the Blue Grotto Restaurant, inspired by Capri.
At this year’s Bridge to Equality Luncheon, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee honored judges Thomas Wiseman Jr. and Richard Dinkins, who both served on desegregation cases, allowing children of any color to attend public schools. Speeches were given by the two honorees, Lajuanda Street Harley, who was one of the first African-American students to attend a public school in Metro Nashville, and Kate Campbell, a singer-songwriter who wrote about her experience attending a historically black high school in the ’70s. The luncheon was brought to a close by Nashville Youth Poet Laureate finalist Monserrat Escobar Arteaga.

he Andrew Jackson Foundation’s Spring Outing is a time-honored tradition of The Hermitage that began as a picnic on the lawn 118 years ago. With such a long history, there have been occasional setbacks, and this year was one of them. At the last minute, a serious family illness prevented author and presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin from speaking at the luncheon. Fortunately, respected veteran White House correspondent Ann Compton graciously agreed to step in on such short notice. At a patrons reception in the mansion, co-chairs Jennie McCabe and Kathy Rolfe welcomed those who gathered in the entry hall awaiting Ann’s arrival. Once inside, Ann shook hands with the slightly starstruck crowd and posed for photographs with President and CEO Howard Kittell and Crissy Haslam, among others. People eventually drifted onto the back porch to enjoy a glass of Champagne and pick up a copy of Doris’ memoir, Wait Till Next Year, before joining more than 400 attendees for lunch on the lawn. The sold-out affair took place in an airy tent filled with tables dressed in sage green linens and topped with arrangements of hydrangeas, purple freesia and maiden hair fern. After words from Frances Spradley, regent of the foundation, everyone enjoyed gazpacho blanco and pecan chicken salad from Kristen Winston Catering. In her opening remarks, Ann charmed the audience by setting the scene as if Andrew Jackson were the current president. As the first female reporter assigned to cover the White House for network television, whose 41-year career spanned seven presidents, her comments and observations were insightful and relevant. She shared humorous personal stories about each president during her career, and she talked about her experience as the sole reporter on Air Force One when the news of 9/11 broke. Despite being a last-minute replacement, Ann’s inspiring words and firsthand account of recent presidents kept everyone engaged and entertained, just like Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage does for thousands of visitors each year. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Eric England

Wild at Heart Plenty of fun on tap at Brew at the Zoo
T
he Nashville Zoo welcomed 4,000 guests with beer and beasts aplenty for another wildly successful Brew at the Zoo. The park closed early to prepare for the event, which featured 70 craft breweries, over 100 beers on tap and a handful of wine options. Traffic was bumper to bumper as cars lined up to enter the zoo and get a taste of some of the region’s best beer. Once inside, everyone was given a tasting glass for the festivities, and as guests made their way past the first exhibits, the vibrant blue hyacinth macaws and soft white Stanley cranes came out in full force to show off for their excited patrons. Festival Field hosted the largest number of breweries on-site, as well as a wide variety of food trucks for snacks in between sips. The zip line and carousel were also operating in full swing, offering guests a brief diversion from the sampling. The VIP Lounge offered a quieter, more private area just off the packed field, and guests there nibbled on lobster nachos, shrimp po’ boys and Thai-spiced chicken wings. They were also treated to an appearance by one of the zoo’s own Palawan binturongs: Wilbur, the first male born in the United States. More breweries were stationed throughout the zoo, and guests wandered the premises sampling the beverages and marveling at the animals. Many guests flocked to the brand new Andean bear exhibit and its surrounding area — a cool, wooded space evoking a South American cloud forest — complete with a mini petting zoo of tortoises and an exhibit of frolicking Guinea pigs. A pair of animal shows and a beverage-stocked Conservation Lounge provided a few more opportunities for animal encounters, and guests were able to peruse a selection of canvases painted by some of the zoo’s animals. Zoo staff were also on hand, providing fans to keep guests cool on the sweltering summer evening — but with the beer and good times flowing freely, no one seemed to mind the heat.

Hold Your Horses Saddle Up is the big winner at Music Country Grand Prix
T
he sweltering summer sun was blazing down on Franklin’s bucolic Brownland Farm, but it wasn’t enough to deter hundreds of guests from showing their support for Saddle Up at the 30th annual Music Country Grand Prix. This family-friendly fundraiser, co-chaired once again by Sarah Ingram and Jennifer Pennington, is a beloved summer outing for kids and grownups alike. VIPs were grateful to find some shade under the Patrons Tent, where long white tables were topped with cheery blue and green arrangements in handmade horseshaped planters. Fans were a welcome addition to tables, helping guests cool down as they waited for the competition to start. Across the field, spectators packed into the grandstand or relaxed under private cabanas to enjoy the festivities. Before the horses hit the tracks, attendees had the chance to show their skill and dexterity in the nearby People Prix course. The always-popular kid-sized obstacle course allowed tykes and fun-loving adults to participate in their very own jumping competition for prizes and bragging rights. An exciting change for the 30th annual event was the increase in the competition’s purse. This year’s crop of world-class competitors vied for a $50,000 prize, up from $40,000 last year. The hefty purse attracted even more talent than usual from across the country for this premier equestrian jumping competition. Once the competition began, the crowd was mesmerized by the power and athleticism of the horses and riders as they navigated the course’s 14 jumps. More than 30 riders participated, and ultimately, Olympian Kirk Webby and his horse Brando du Roet took home the prize. Kirk may have been named the winner, but the true victor of the Music Country Grand Prix was Saddle Up. The therapeutic riding program, which serves children with disabilities, has been the beneficiary of over $1.6 million since the event began.

A
s a delectably sweet kick-off to summer, Purity Dairy and the Martha O’Bryan Center hosted their 33rd annual ice cream summer social on First Presbyterian Church’s expansive lawn. This year, over 100 amateur churners came out with their own signature flavors of homemade ice cream to compete for a chance to become an official Purity flavor. The hot summer afternoon was perfect for ice cream sampling, and guests of all ages wandered from table to table to get a taste. This year’s social had the at-home ice cream chefs organized by church, and a large number of Nashville’s Presbyterian churches — as well as individual ice cream enthusiasts — came out to participate. Richard Exton of Second Presbyterian Church took home the grand prize of Best of Show with his unique flavor, Peppermint Lemon Drop. Winning flavors in other categories included Caramel Mocha Surprise, Strawberry Explosion, Lovin’ It Lime, Chocolate Velvet and Sugar Plum Fairy (complete with magic glitter, of course). Just like past winners, Richard will have his ice cream confection made into a limited edition Purity flavor. The winning flavors from the past were also represented this year, with Purity representatives dishing out scoops of Cherry Chocolate Chip, Zesty Lemon Snap and Salted Caramel Cheesecake from their own booth at the event. For parents wary of feeding their kids too much sugar, the party also included diversions like face paint, temporary tattoos and crafts for the event’s youngest attendees. Meanwhile, others continued sampling a large variety of different flavors, such as Mississippi Moon Pie, Bananas Foster, GooGoo Peanut, “Hot” Chocolate, a tropical Sunshine Delish — and even a banana pancake flavor. One competitor from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian decided to forgo the traditional ice cream option and served up a dairy-free cantaloupe and strawberry freeze. This year’s Miss Martha’s Ice Cream Crankin’ and Summer Social raised more than $35,000 to benefit the Martha O’Bryan Center, which seeks to empower the impoverished through work, education, employment and fellowship. by Brian Ericson photographs by Daniel Meigs continued on page 30

An Enthusiastic Welcome
RH Nashville hosts an unprecedented opening gala
I
n a perfect combination of retail and philanthropy, RH Nashville, The Gallery at Green Hills, hosted a dramatic opening party benefiting the Frist Art Museum. The invitation-only event gave 1,600 guests the first chance to experience the retailer’s highly anticipated store after watching its construction for months. The interior and exterior spaces exceeded all expectations with four gorgeous floors and 70,000 square feet of the brand’s home furnishings collections displayed in gallery-like settings. Once inside, everyone gaped at the glass and steel atrium, gleaming chandeliers and mature olive trees before exploring further. Each floor offered different gourmet bites and beverages by RH Café, the culinary adventure developed with Chicago restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff and the first of its kind in the South. Guests were greeted with Bellinis by Cipriani NYC and bites from the burrata bar on the first floor, a Pol Roger Champagne bar and truffle cheese pressed sandwiches on the second floor and refreshing mojitos and Bar Tartare on the third level. The final stop was the Rooftop Garden & Conservatory, where people cooled off with frosé and Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley wines while listening to New York DJ Chris Malinchak. The party exceeded expectations as well, thanks to orchestration by the talented team at The Callaway and a host committee comprised of Karen Elson, Gen and Benjamin Sohr, Jennifer and Billy Frist, Holly Williams, Vadis Turner, Sylvia Rapoport, Nick Dryden, Sally Williams, Susan Edwards and Crystal Churchwell. RH Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman and A-list stars Naomi Watts and Portia de Rossi came in for the affair. Local celebrities included Lily Aldridge, Kings of Leon’s Nathan Followill and Matthew Followill, Jessie Baylin, Jake Owen, Cassadee Pope and Chris Young. Before leaving, everyone returned to the third floor to fill favor bags from the 12-foot-long candy bar. Apparently, the entire midstate area was equally excited about the new store. The next morning, a long line wrapped around the building waiting for the luxury retailer to open.

Time Travel The Swan Ball Auction Party journeys back to the ‘20s
T
he Swan Ball auction is always known for its fabulous trips, and this year, the party itself took guests on a journey as well — not to a different place but to a different time with a glamorous 1920s soirée. Party co-chairs Suann Davis and Sarah Reisner worked with Bruce Pittman to bring the Roaring ’20s to life at the Belle Meade Country Club. A giant golden swan flanked by flowing Champagne fountains greeted guests as they arrived — the perfect welcome to any gathering. (The swan in question has been a part of many balls in the past, but he was recently rediscovered in Cheekwood’s storage and given a glittery gold makeover.) Coupes in hand, partygoers mingled on the tented terrace or took a quick turn in the photo booth, posing with props reminiscent of the era — feather boas, top hats, strands of pearls and more — against a shimmery backdrop. A cigar bar overlooking the golf course created a quiet place to relax, and in the back of the ballroom, revelers were delighted to find a hidden speakeasy, complete with leather sofas, wingback chairs, oriental rugs, fake bookcases, a pianist and, of course, spirits aplenty. Although there were many delightful distractions, no one forgot the true reason for this gathering: bidding high — and bidding often — on an astonishing assortment of luxury vacations, experiences and treasures. The auction committee, led by co-chairs Kathy Davis, Melissa Mahanes and Jill Talbert, worked tirelessly to pull together some very impressive items. “Our committee worked so incredibly hard to span the globe of all different types of trips and experiences,” said Melissa. It seemed the nearly 500 guests in attendance agreed. There were 79 lots in the silent auction, including trips to St. Thomas, Beaver Creek and Belize; a Cheekwood party for 24 guests and a commissioned portrait by artist Michael Shane Neal. The Live Auction featured another 19 lots, including a safari in Tanzania, a cruise to the Galapagos Islands and an autumn getaway to Aspen for six. The competition was fierce, and in the end, the auction exceeded the chairmen’s goal by 25 percent. We’ll raise our coupes to that!

ummer storms swept through the city the day of the Swan Ball Patrons Party, but the rain moved out as the first guests arrived at the Belle Meade home of Stephanie and John Ingram, who hosted the posh evening. The brightening sky matched the exuberant spirits of Swan Ball co-chairs Beth Alexander and Patti Smallwood. Page and Windrow perfectly captured the glamour and zest of the Jazz Age. The tasteful setting held a handsome Champagne bar stocked with Schramsberg for a grand welcome. Outside, they created a luxurious tent draped in white and furnished with plush confidante sofas topped with silver trumpet vases holding white ostrich plumes. Colossal arrangements of white phalaenopsis orchids from The Tulip Tree’s Mark O’Bryan adorned every space. Even the invitation embraced the theme, encouraging ’20s attire for the traditionally black-tie affair. Many of the ladies complied and donned fringe, feathers and glitzy headbands. With Champagne in hand, guests visited the sunroom to admire exquisite pieces from Swan Ball jeweler Temple St. Clair and snap up the perfect accessory for the upcoming ball. From there, they moved to the tent, where servers offered rosé and classic Old-Fashioneds to enjoy with appetizers such as duck confit on crostini, deviled quail eggs and caviar served on wonton “spoons.” The enticing dinner menu from Kristen Winston Catering included an ice bar with copious amounts of Maine lobster, oysters and jumbo shrimp. Attendees savored lollipop lamb chops, herb- and ricotta-stuffed ravioli and spring vegetable ragout, and they indulged in lemon fantasy tartlets with candied zest and cappuccino semifreddo with warm sugared doughnuts for dessert. Lively conversation came to a sudden halt when a talented trio of dancers — in period attire, naturally — took the floor. They delighted the crowd as they hopped, kicked and shimmied to familiar jazz numbers. The unexpected performance was a highlight of the vibrant party, and the lavish evening ended with everyone excited about the 56th Swan Ball and what surprises that night would hold.

s F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in The Great Gatsby, “I like large parties. They’re so intimate.” If that’s the case, there wasn’t a more intimate party in town than the Swan Ball, where co-chairs Beth Alexander and Patti Smallwood coordinated a glamorous fête that Jay Gatsby himself would’ve adored. All of the events leading up to this year’s Swan Ball held hints of ’20s glam, but nothing prepared guests for the truly spectacular Art Deco-inspired evening awaiting at the Cheekwood Mansion. A vivid trail of coral, pink, blush, yellow and cream flowers lined the grand staircase leading to a lush floral wall that provided the perfect backdrop for photos as guests arrived. Gold-rimmed flutes of Schramsberg were passed throughout the tent where, overhead, soft swaths of champagne fabric were draped and lined with tiny twinkle lights, mimicking the romantic glow of a starry sky. Even the bars — Art Deco in design with a gold geometric façade and vibrant tangerine shelves — were stunning pieces of décor, adding the right amount of sophisticated panache to the party. Revelers flitted between the tent, Wisteria Arbor and the lavish display of jewels from Temple St. Clair during the cocktail hour until a second line band marched through the crowd to signal that dinnertime had arrived. With all the excitement of another beautiful Swan Ball, the loss of the gala’s founder Jane Dudley was never far from anyone’s mind. A photo of her greeted guests as they arrived; her daughter Trevania wore a stunning Oscar de la Renta skirt that had once belonged to her mother, and Cheekwood CEO Jane MacLeod paid tribute to her with remarks at the beginning of the program, saying her “name is now synonymous with the ball.” “For nearly six decades, the Swan Ball has served as Cheekwood’s major fundraiser, providing critical annual support to keep our gardens beautiful, our exhibitions world-class and our history celebrated,” Jane said. The co-chairs presented the Swan Award to Julia Reed, who Beth accidentally referred to as Julia Roberts before dissolving into laughter and admitting, “I practiced really hard so I wouldn’t do that!” Julia, whose mother and brother were in attendance, charmed the crowd with tales of her childhood spent in Nashville. Boz Scaggs provided the post-dinner entertainment before the hip, young Late Party attendees arrived for dancing until the wee hours of the morning. It was another fabulous Swan Ball for the books, one that not only Jay Gatsby would’ve approved of but Jane Dudley herself was no doubt smiling down upon.

Nina Thomas As an actor and model with AMAX Talent, Nina Thomas says, “I love to represent ‘women of a certain age’ in healthy lifestyle commercials — 60s are the new 40s!” When she’s not on set, Nina works as a business manager for Alizah Greenberg Jewelry and a mentor with the Nashville Fashion Alliance. A Nashvillian for the past 30 years, she’s also a wife of 40 years and a mom to two adult sons and three pets.
STYLE Nina is all about local designers. “Cavanagh Baker is in heavy rotation,” she says. “Her silk blouses and statement coats paired with any jeans and Alizah Greenberg Jewelry will work day and night.” She’s also in the market for something with a little sparkle. “I am lusting over a custom leather jacket and something sequined ... as in Atelier Savas and Any Old Iron!”
HEALTH + FITNESS When it comes to a nutrition plan, Nina says she doesn’t have one. “I just listen to what sounds good and eat in moderation. I prefer to graze during the day. Greek yogurt with fresh pineapple and walnuts, avocado with oranges, and hummus with crackers get me through the day until we sit down to a balanced dinner of just about anything.” As for exercise, she stays healthy by staying active with 5-mile runs every other day, yoga three times a week, hiking and biking when she can and “gardening more than I like.”
WARDROBE What are the items every woman should have in her closet? Nina says, “A fabulous white blouse or neutral silk blouse — preferably both! — jeans in three shapes (skinny, straight and flared) in three different washes, a statement jacket or blazer, a variety of scarves, good footwear (a mule, pump and bootie), and a jumpsuit or midi dress.”

To get event-ready on short notice, Nina’s routine is simple. “Brush my hair upside down and use Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil to moisturize and defrizz. Finish with R+Co paste [ from] Local Honey East to make the ends piecey, L’Oréal The Super Slim eyeliner, no mascara [and] whatever lipstick is in my bag. Wear a black jumpsuit and statement slippers. Grab a scarf and a good handbag.”

David Perry Raised in a small English fishing village, David Perry spent seven years in the Royal Navy as a missile engineer, which he says gave him “a hunger for travel and exotic places.” After owning a vintage clothing store for years and stints in San Francisco and Los Angeles, he now owns a fashion design and production business that specializes in U.S. manufacturing. A Nashvillian for five years, David has plans to open a transparent and sustainable fashion garment factory in the area in early 2019.
FITNESS Despite being an incredibly busy entrepreneur, David prioritizes an active lifestyle to stay in great shape. “The hardest part to running a business in two cities/states is finding a work-exercise balance, so starting my day with sun salutations is the best preparation for my day, which I try to do at least three mornings a week,” he says. “I box at least once a week with a trainer, and in between that, I swim a mile several times a week after work or ride my road bike to Percy Priest Dam and back when the weather allows. Having the Greenway right around the corner is a huge bonus to living in Inglewood.”
STYLE David has impeccable taste when it comes to fashion, so who are some of his favorite designers? “Billy Reid,” he says. “From fabrics to fit, he’s always on point, and his talent as well as his genuine personality shows through in his designs. Billy doesn’t cut corners when it comes to great designs.” As a surfer, David also loves surf brands. “The story and ethos behind both Faherty and Outerknown really resonate with me, and fortunately the fabrics they use and designs they launch each season fit well for me, both physically and socially.” Lastly, he calls himself a sucker for RRL. “I simply can’t pass on great vintage, so a brand that uses some of the best and most sought-after vintage styles from the past 100 years, then brings them to life in amazing modern fabrics and quality construction, is also hard to pass up.”

GROOMING When it comes to men’s grooming products, David has three products he can’t live without. “Olo is an argan hair oil, which seems to be the only product I’ve found so far that can tame my crazy hair,” he says. He also loves D.S. & Durga scents from New York. “A lot can be used as unisex, and I always have a few at home. They are so unique and smell like no other colognes.” Lastly, Skin Trip is a tried-and-true product for him. “This small-batch moisturizer smells like my favorite coconut surf wax. I’ve used it on and off for about 24 years now,” he says.

Mary Kathryn Yeiser Hudson Mary Kathryn Yeiser Hudson’s extensive retail background includes stints at Harrods London, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, but she’s been at her current post at Therapy Systems for 12 years. She works as the regional sales manager for the company, which comprises three brands (Therapy Systems, Private Edition and The Cosmetic Market). She also serves as the director of hair and makeup for Nashville Fashion Week and is a newlywed, having married Hud Hudson in May of this year.
STYLE When it comes to fashion designers, Mary Kathryn says, “Tibi is by far my favorite. It’s pretty classic but always with a twist. I always feel great when I wear it.” Beyond that, she loves comfortable classics. “I love jeans — I wish I could wear them everyday! I love Frame and Madewell denim. I also love heels, and I am rarely not wearing them during the week. But I usually wear sneakers when I am not working and live in my Rag & Bone leather leggings — just not in the summer!”
QUICK FIXES A beauty product guru, it’s no surprise that Mary Kathryn has recommendations of how to fix whatever ails you. For puffy eyes, she suggests Patchology Flashpatch Rejuvenating Eye Gels. Beat blemishes with Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask (as a mask or spot treatment). To handle humidity and frizzy hair, Mary Kathryn recommends “tons of Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray.” To combat winter skin, she says, “I lightly press a facial oil into my skin before moisturizer, and I add oil to my foundation (usually Therapy Systems Multi-Use Nourishing Oil) to create a luminous glow.”
HEALTH + FITNESS To stay fit, Mary Kathryn keeps it simple. “I work out mostly at home,” she says. “We live on a farm with lots of hills, so running and hiking with our two dogs is my favorite thing to do, followed by a series of exercises with a medicine ball and light weights.” She doesn’t diet or follow a specific nutrition plan but says, “I just honestly like to eat healthy foods — lots of lean meats and veggies — and I limit my carbs.”
BEAUTY PROS As a beauty expert herself, Mary Kathryn knows how important it is to trust the pros. For hair care, she uses Sarah Morgan at Hyde. “She is wonderful, always makes my hair look great and is able to do my hair in a way that I only need to get it done every three to four months,” she raves. For makeup, she swears by Sara Jones at The Cosmetic Market and Traci Vaughn, an aesthetician at Private Edition, is her go-to for skin care. “She has worked with me to help get rid of my hyperpigmentation, and my skin has never looked better.”

Kelly Sutton An Emmy Award-winning TV host and radio personality, Kelly Sutton seems to never slow down. CAMERA READY Kelly has more than her fair share of tips for looking photo-ready, especially for getting glam on short notice. “I will tan with a tan towel if I can the night before,” she says. “But if I can’t, I will use Sally Hansen airbrush legs. Here is a tip: it works great on your arms too.” Beyond that, she has a few go-to products that she always keeps on hand. “I always have a great concealer (IT Bye Bye Under Eye), great mascara (Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume), Visine and MAC powder with me. I can make do with those things in a pinch if I have to.”
HEALTH + FITNESS When it comes to nutrition, Kelly has been doing intermittent fasting for the past few months. “I really love it,” she says. “I only eat between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. I do healthy carbs early on, and by dinner it is usually only protein and veggies. I have also been adding Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides to my coffee each day. I don’t do a lot of dairy and have changed over to mostly almond milk.” To stay fit, she works out with Kat Martino from Martino Fit. “She has helped change my body! I do weights three days a week and HIIT cardio three days a week.”

For example, the dress I wore at ACM Awards this year had zip-off sleeves! Genius!” When she’s not in a red carpet gown, she says her go-to fashion item is a jumpsuit. “I realized I have four, and I’m slightly obsessed.”

Sydney Chiyoko Nashville born and raised, Sydney Chiyoko began her modeling career at the age of 15 when she entered the AMAX + Nashville Fashion Week Model Search. Beating out hundreds of contestants, she won the competition and soon signed with Next Models in Miami and Los Angeles and DNA Models in New York. Alice S mith marries S tephen Drew C arney
Mattie Smith and Drew Carney were acquainted as early as 2004 when he was at Montgomery Bell Academy and she attended Christ Presbyterian Academy, but they didn’t become friends until 2012, when they returned to Nashville following college. After a two-week trip through Europe, Drew proposed in Positano, Italy, where they stayed at Mattie’s dream hotel, Le Sirenuse. They married Dec. 30 at Scarritt Bennett’s Wightman Chapel with the Rev. Jim Bachmann officiating. The bride’s gown, by Israeli designer Inbal Dror, was a long-sleeved creation that she wore with a cathedral-length veil. Her bouquet was all white roses, tulips and peonies with cascading green ivy. The bridesmaids’ dresses were festive for the New
Year’s weekend. They were custom designed by the bride and executed by a local seamstress, Rosie at Textile Fabrics. The reception was at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel ballroom, where the 370 guests danced to the music of the 12 South Band, drank Champagne from a seven-tiered tower and enjoyed an Italian dinner honoring the couple’s engagement story. A. Ward designed the wedding cake, and H Three Events masterminded the evening. Party favors and New Year’s horns, top hats and glow items were brought out periodically on silver trays to delight and surprise the guests. For the party, the bride changed into her second dress of the evening, which was gold brocade with feathers. Before leaving with her
groom in a white Bentley, Mattie changed again into her mother’s wedding gown, which had been altered and shortened. After a wedding trip to the Four Seasons in Lanai, Hawaii, the newlyweds returned to Nashville, where Mattie is a buyer and manager at H. Audrey and Drew is in finance and accounting with Clinical Services Group of HCA Healthcare. She has a bachelor’s from The University of Alabama, and he has a bachelor’s from The University of Tennessee as well as a master’s in accountancy from Middle Tennessee State University. Their parents are Frances and Thomas Smith of Franklin and Sandy and Steve Carney of Goodlettsville.

They always say “sorry” about the lipstick on the cheek and try to rub it away, but they miss the makeup left on my shoulder. My cheek is fine, but my suit has to go to the dry cleaners. I guess there must be some way to avoid it. Can you help? —Darren, Green Hills A hug, it seems, comes with a price tag. It’s cruel, however, to think of resisting a quick kiss from a lady in high spirits, especially if she’s fun and attractive. You can be on guard. When you see her headed toward you, take the initiative: extend your arm, bend down and plop a preemptive kiss on her cheek. But she’s likely to beat you to the buss. If she rushes you, you’re ruined. Perhaps you run in a crowd that overdoes the foundation. You can forgive the mark on the cheek, but the smear on the shoulder is a burden to be dealt with. You can claim a cold and toss in a sniffle as supporting evidence, but that’s an excuse with a short life. A burp towel on your left shoulder might work. (The left shoulder, I’ve found from personal experience, is the likely target for a hugging attacker.) Or you can start wearing the same suit to every party; the dry cleaner will learn to recognize it coming through the door. He’ll count the streaks and say, “Big night, eh?”

Boy Talk I know I’m supposed to say “thank you” when people come up and compliment me. I can understand it when they say they like my dress or my hair. But lately a close girlfriend has started telling me that others — particularly men — think I look “pretty.” I don’t understand it, and “pretty” is not a word I really like, especially coming out of nowhere from men. I don’t know how to deal with this second-hand compliment. Quite frankly, I’d like her to stop it, but how do I do it without insulting her? I’m fed up with her nice words. —Anonymous, Sylvan Park Compliments don’t usually come with footnotes, but you might probe for a few. Who knows? “Pretty” may be her own language. That sounds likely; she probably doesn’t carry a pencil and pad with her for note-taking. If she names the man, she may be trying to set the two of you up. But, if you don’t like feeling pretty, you can call that matchmaking to a halt by asking her what in the world the man can be thinking. If she can’t find a quick answer, that will put her compliments on pause. With just the two of you in the conversation, you should be in the perfect situation to say precisely what you think. So go ahead and say “thank you” followed by a “but … .” She’s not the one you’ll be insulting. You can chasten all mankind, but who else needs to know? She’ll get the message. She can find another word or start talking about your hair.

Frisson is the French word for shiver, so you’re right on cue if you break out in delightful chill bumps upon seeing the frosty menu at this warmhearted gelato emporium. What started as a food truck in 2017 has migrated to brick-and-mortar, planting a frosty flag in East Nashville this summer. In the pedestrian-friendly district of the Shoppes on Fatherland, shoppers find cool sanctuary among cones and cups swirling with custardy chocolate and vanilla soft serve and studded with crushed pretzels, fresh brownies, crumbled cookies and candy. Caila Singleton and Elise Schempp’s twisted roster of creative cones includes the likes of the Nash Vegas, with rainbow sprinkles and fluffy tufts of cotton candy, and Campfire, with graham cracker dust, marshmallows and chocolate sauce. Beware of Chocolate Abduction, blanketed with brownies, and prepare to be dazzled by Peanut Butter Daze, encrusted with Reese’s. The decadent Lord of the Dough is aptly named for its infusion of no-bake cookie dough, but it could just as easily be named for you, as Frisson will happily title any of its custom creations for private parties with the Frisson catering mobile — a thrilling and chilling modern spin on the traditional ice-cream truck.
The groundhog tells us when winter is over, but Bobbie’s Dairy Dip lets us know when summer arrives. That’s when lines start winding through the sizzling parking lot on Charlotte Avenue, families in flip-flops and sunglasses making hard choices between chocolate and vanilla, dipped and undipped, small and large. (Always go vanilla, dipped, large.) There are hamburgers, sweet potato fries, root beer floats and a vast array of candystudded shakes, frozen chocolate-dipped bananas and other decadent tastes of summer, but it’s the soft serve cones that make Bobbie’s cheerful pink and green picnic tables a landmark of life in Nashville and the backdrop of so many happy memories. Remember that time your baby tasted his first Bobbie’s cone and smeared it all over his face? That time he dropped it on the searing blacktop and you had to start all over again at the back of the line? (Or maybe that was you. It happens to adults, too.) Then, remember that time your baby turned into a teenager and got his first summer job, swirling and dipping cones in the inner sanctum behind the walk-up ordering window? More than just a restaurant and a rite of summer, Bobbie’s is a rite of passage in Nashville, a timeless delight for any age.

it’s nearly midsummer, and there’s no time to waste with the wrong dance partner. You need a novel that waltzes into your evening, spins you around the dance floor, and leaves you beguiled and enchanted. You might take the first dance with Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. Eleanor Oliphant is highly functional — capable, responsible, self-sufficient, employed — but truly, she’s nowhere near fine. She works in an office in Glasgow, Scotland, with no real friends there or anywhere. In and out of foster care since she was 10, she’s guarded to say the least. She’s also odd. When she falls madly in love with a musician, she resolves to make some changes in her appearance — and her life — in order to win his love. It might not be the best strategy. But change is in the air when you open your eyes — and your heart — to the people around you. Keep your Kleenex handy while dancing with this soulful paperback partner; you might find yourself in tears. Next on your dance card is a hot suitor: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. Nikki, our main character, grew up in London, the modern daughter of Indian immigrants in the Sikh community. She’s like a lot of young 20-somethings — looking for a job, trying to figure out what to do next, annoyed by her family. Nikki finds a job teach-
ing creative writing at a Sikh community center until something better comes along. A bunch of older widows show up at the first class, and it soon becomes clear that they aren’t there to learn the finer points of creative writing. They want to learn how to write in English — literally. Nikki despairs. Let’s just say that the widows end up surprising her with the stories they want to tell. Word gets out, and some members of the local religious community don’t like what they’re hearing. Things get scary for a while — but I’d never recommend a summer dance partner who doesn’t know how to end with a kiss. Your last dance partner has a strong lead. You’ll either love that or hate it. The High Season, by Judy Blundell, spins a tale of a small-town, small-time museum director who lives in a charming cottage in The Hamptons most of the year. Each summer, she and her husband and daughter move into smaller digs and rent out the cottage to wealthy New Yorkers. What could go wrong? Only this: with the wrong renter, you might lose it all. The High Season is hot with anger and scathing portraits of highsociety misbehavior. It also glows with the power within each of us for reinvention — with the vibrant force that bids us ask one another, in breathy voices: Shall we dance?

Belle of the Ball 1994
When Jane Anderson Dudley died last year, she left behind a legacy of making a positive impact on charitable causes around the world. At home, that commitment is felt strongest at Cheekwood. She founded the Swan Ball in 1963 and was named honorary chair after spearheading the first two white-tie galas. A lifelong friend of our founding editor Herbert Fox and an original investor in this publication, Jane was a fixture on our pages. In this photograph, she is radiant as ever arriving at the Swan Ball with her husband Guilford. Jane is missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her, and nowhere is her absence felt more than at the Swan Ball.
