Tennessee’s First SMILE New and Minimally-invasive Surgery for Myopia (Nearsightedness) is First Major Advance in LASIK Technology in 25 Years, Reducing Dependence on Glasses and Contacts short pulses is used to make small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue is then removed by the surgeon though the opening which causes the corneal shape to change, permanently changing the prescription. SMILE has a proven track record of success. It has been used internationally since 2011 and more than 750,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Dr. Wang noted that currently, the procedure has not been approved to treat large amounts of astigmatism and cannot treat farsightedness and that LASIK is still a better option for a majority of the patients seeking laser vision correction.

The first major advance in LASIK technology in 25 years, the SMILE procedure, was performed in Nashville recently at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center by its director, internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIYT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics). “We are extremely very excited to be the first again to introduce the next generation laser correction procedure to the state, helping out patients with this new and minimally invasive procedure,” said Dr. Wang. Myopia is a common eye condition in which close objects can be seen clearly but distant objects are blurry without correction. LASIK and PRK have been the main stay treatments for myopia for over two decades. But SMILE, which stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, has unique advantages over LASIK. The SMILE surgery is minimally invasive as the surgeon needs only to create a small, precise opening to correct vision. No flap is needed. The laser incision is smaller than 5 millimeters for SMILE, compared to approximately 20 millimeters for LASIK. This

helps the cornea to retain more of its natural strength and reduces the risk of rare flap complications. Dry eye after SMILE is also reduced compared with LASIK, as nerves responsible for tear production during the cornea remain more intact in SMILE. One of the state’s first SMILE patients was Margaret Coleman, 34, a manager of the world-famous Bluebird Café, in Nashville, which was prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville”, among others. Ms. Coleman has had poor eyesight all of her life, legal blind in both eyes without correction. Ms. Coleman’s 3D Laser SMILE procedure went beautifully and she is thrilled to have her crystal clear new vision and newly gained independence on glasses or contacts and being one of the first patients in the state to receive SMILE!

Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), is the CEO of Aier-USA, Director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 doctors. Dr. Wang published 8 textbooks and a paper in the world-renowned journal Nature, holds several US patents and performed the world’s first laser-assisted artificial cornea implantation. He established a 501c(3) non-profit charity, Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration, which to date has helped patients from more than 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dr. Wang is the Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year.

“I am so happy!!!”, exclaimed Margaret at her postop visit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the VisuMax Femtosecond Laser for SMILE procedure for -1 to -8 D myopia with up to 0.5D astigmatism. During a SMILE procedure, a femtosecond laser with precise

FALL TRUNK SHOW OCTOBER 4TH | 10AM - 7PM

4121 HILLSBORO PIKE, NASHVILLE KINGS1912.COM | 615.724.5464

Some issues just come together serendipitously. This is one of them. A couple of months ago, when we started choosing homes to spotlight in our interior design feature, our team fell in love with a house built and designed by Ray Booth and Bobby McAlpine. Partners at the design firm McAlpine, which boasts an office in Nashville, the design duo has impeccable taste. (You can read all about the property on page 64.) As we continued to flesh out the issue, we decided to feature Bobby in Behind the Scenes (page 10) and started discussing the possibility of putting the pair on our cover. During this time, we learned that Bobby and Ray would be the keynote speakers at the 2019 Antiques & Garden Show, where they’ll share the stage with longtime client Faith Hill.

They graciously granted us an interview — their first about the show — and agreed to our cover shoot. Read more about what to expect from their design panel, as well as advice on decorating and shopping the show, on page 79. In addition to Ray and Bobby’s property, we’re taking you inside five more of the city’s most gorgeous homes. Flip to page 57 to see them all. Thanks to the collossal commemorative 25th anniversary issue we published last month, this issue is full of party coverage. We’ve got all of the details on the best late summer and early fall fêtes, including Eve of Janus (page 26), l’Eté du Vin (page 32), TPAC Gala (page 36), Chukkers for Charity (page 48) and, of course, our very own fabulous 25th anniversary party (page 41). Enjoy! BY NaNcY FloYd

behind the scenes

Bobby McAlpine Architect Bobby McAlpine designed his first house at the age of 5 and hasn’t stopped since. He creates homes with a soulful, timeless presence, including those built here in Nashville, which started with two Italianate-inspired houses in the late ’90s and continues today with a South African Cape Dutch that is “just plain pretty.” His eponymous firm has offices in Montgomery, Nashville, Atlanta and New York, and among his partners is Nashville resident and interior designer Ray Booth. Their friendship of more than 25 years has been a “seamless action between architecture and interiors” and has resulted in homes like the one featured on page 64 in this issue. Bobby works all over the country and makes it to Nashville at least 20 times a year. One of those visits will be for the 2019 Antiques & Garden Show, where he and Ray will be keynote speakers along with their client Faith Hill. We chatted with the architect to find out where he finds inspiration, where he likes to spend his time and more. by Holly Hoffman photograph by Simon Upton

After 35 years of designing homes, where do you find inspiration? Through the people I meet, I am called to shop my own self to help me solve their riddle. What are your favorite materials to work with? Any material that has the capacity to become more beautiful in time: stone, wood, slate and steel. Do you have a dream project? Comprehensive landscape and coordinated effort of complementary buildings to create a greater whole. What was your first job? In the seventh grade, the designing of a house for the richest and cheapest woman in town. Clue: She hired a seventh grader.

What person has influenced your life the most and how? My mother. She had an insatiable appetite for collecting antiques and creating many homes throughout my childhood.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Always an architect. I designed my first house at the age of 5 and haven’t stopped since. I began work with architects in the ninth grade.

Is there a particular home that stands out in your memory? The homes that I have built for myself. They are laboratories and testing ground for what I have come to know and respect — my most recent being in Atlanta.

The Basics

Name: Bobby McAlpine Profession/Title: Architect Hometown: Vredenburgh, Alabama Resides in: Atlanta, Georgia Number of homes he’s designed in Nashville: 15+

What are you currently reading, listening to or bingewatching? Book: Lives of the Saints by Nancy Lemann. It is not a new book and was a gift from a friend. Binge-watching: Ric Burns’ series on the history of New York (New York: A Documentary Film). Fascinating. When you’re in Nashville, what’s a favorite place you like to go? Bluebird Cafe What’s one thing you’d like to cross off your bucket list? Bali — it looks to be heaven on earth. What trait do you admire most in others? Continuity If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be? I’m just not envious that way.

Wine & Wishes

Art Deco Affair

Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee’s Young Leaders Board hosted the annual Wine & Wishes at the home of Sylvia Roberts, where 300 supporters gathered and enjoyed entertainment from Erik Blue Band and bites from G Catering. Bollywood biryani bowls, shrimp tacos, crab cakes and cookie dough spoons were aplenty as guests browsed the silent auction and tried their hand at the wine pull. Thanks to the generosity of all in attendance, more then $35,000 was raised to support Make-A-Wish and its mission to grant wishes throughout Middle Tennessee.

The Frist Art Museum hosted its sixth annual Art Deco Affair to celebrate the 1930s building and raise funds for the care and maintenance of our city’s historic landmark and cultural space. A chic crowd decked out in period-inspired attire enjoyed drinks and light bites — including organic cotton candy from Ivory Cotton Bar — and dancing to tunes spun by DJ AyDamn. But without a doubt, the highlight of the night was taking intimate tours of the galleries to check out the current exhibitions. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Eric England

Sunset Safari Kick-Off

Literary Award Gala Kick-Off

The Nashville Zoo toasted another year of Sunset Safari at an intimate cocktail party at the home of Karly and Clay Hart. To properly kick off the festivities, Karly joined fellow co-chairs LeAnne Bottorff, Sara Dorfman and Jordan Thompson, along with Board Chair Julie Walker and President and CEO Rick Schwartz, in welcoming zoo enthusiasts. Partygoers mixed and mingled with an opossum, a kinkajou, a Harris’s hawk and a 40-pound red-tailed boa constrictor — the perfect preparation for the adults-only, animal-centric party at the zoo.

Literature lovers came together at the home of Kate and Steve Ezell in celebratory preparation for the upcoming Literary Award Gala at the Nashville Public Library. Gala co-chairs Grace Awh and Holly Coltea, along with NPLF President Shawn Bakker, greeted enthusiastic guests as they arrived, each eager to learn details about the black-tie fundraiser. Corralling everyone’s attention, Bill King remarked on the history of the event and shared insider details of his conversation with this year’s honoree, The New Yorker editor David Remnick, when he found out the news that he’d be taking home the prestigious award on Nov. 10.

Swan Ball Auction Kick-Off

Members of the Nashville Ballet’s Benefactors Society gathered at Hotel Indigo for a cocktail event to toast to the 2018-19 season. The annual event serves not only to celebrate the start of the season but to honor the generous donors who make the Nashville Ballet’s work possible. This year’s gathering also held another reason to celebrate: This season mark’s Paul Vasterling’s 20th year as artistic director!

Swan Ball co-chairs Jana Davis and Ellen Martin have been working for months to recruit an army of volunteers to work on the white-tie gala. Along with auction co-chairs Laura Bowen, Lise Morrow and Susan Weathersby, they welcomed members of the Auction Committee to the Belle Meade home of Anne and Joe Russell and officially kicked things off. After nibbling on hors d’œuvres from Kristen Winston, this tireless group chatted about the one-of-a-kind items and adventures to be offered at the Swan Ball Auction Party next May.

Ballet Ball Launch Party

Sunday in the Park Kick-Off

Dallas Wilt hosted the Ballet Ball Launch Party at her stunning Tyne Boulevard home, where co-chairs Amy Atkinson and Amos Gott gathered their committee to officially commence the season of planning over breakfast and coffee. Organizing the event begins early for the Nashville Ballet’s biggest fundraiser, which is celebrating 30 years of successfully raising funds for the beloved Ballet. The main event will be held on March 2, 2019, at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

As the scorching summer days drag on, guests were delighted to have an excuse to plan for cooler autumn weather ahead and begin dreaming about Sunday in the Park, one of the most treasured fall fundraisers. Co-chairs Paige Bainbridge and Ashley Smith joined supporters of Warner Parks to toast the upcoming event at Nina and Page Davidson’s breathtaking Belle Meade home. Guests enjoyed tasty light bites from The Corner Market, including shrimp skewers and sweet potato biscuits topped with pork tenderloin, as they officially launched the 29th annual event, which is being held on Oct. 28 at Edwin Warner Park.

n at-capacity crowd of 300 guests arrived at the eighth annual Nourish ready to eat. But then, who wouldn’t arrive hungry to the popular event? The Nashville Food Project’s fundraiser brings together the city’s most innovative chefs for an evening of delicious food and delightful wine pairings that support the nonprofit’s work to cultivate a vibrant community and alleviate hunger in Nashville. Chair Jennifer Justus used her foodie connections and rounded up five chefs who looked to their family dishes and traditions from Mexico, India, Syria and Lebanon. They also found inspiration in NFP’s community gardens. The results were savory dishes that paid homage to the nonprofit’s refugee farmers, volunteers and programs. The evening began in MBA’s Lowry Hall, where guests sipped on Cathead watermelon sangria and noshed on empanadas and BLT crostini from Karla Ruiz of Karla’s Catering and The Woman’s Club of Nashville. The feast moved to the dining hall where attendees indulged in Maneet Chauhan’s roasted vegetable chaat, Walden’s Bhutanese-style ema datshi with shrimp by Rahaf Amer, and beef kibbeh meatballs with date butter and red pepper shatta sauce from Hrant Arakelian of Lyra. Norma Paz of Las Paletas served a variety of her popular ice pops as palate cleansers between each course and for dessert. During the meal, NFP founder Tallu Schuyler Quinn talked about the work of Nourish to build communities by bringing people together to grow, cook and share nourishing food. One volunteer who works tirelessly carrying out the organization’s mission is Judy Wright, and she was presented with the Thomas Williams Golden Skillet Award. Since the 2010 flood, Judy has contributed countless hours in the kitchen, grown the volunteer base and secured generous donations. Nourish is always an inspiring evening of sharing creative dishes and celebrating with friends, volunteers and supporters. The successful event raised more than $160,000 for The Nashville Food Project, and as in years past, everyone left with full tummies and full hearts. by Holly Hoffman photographs by Eric England

Tradition Continues A lovely evening for a great cause at Eve of Janus

M

ore than 150 giddy young ladies in white gowns and dapper young men in white dinner jackets streamed into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the 48th annual Eve of Janus. Since 1970, this Nashville tradition has honored young women, Signs of the Times, in a presentation. Beginning in 2003, the Marshals, who escort them, have also been recognized and are an equally important part of the night. The black-tie affair raises funds and awareness for the Tri Delta Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. After photos with family and friends were completed, the honorees traipsed up the grand staircase for a special dinner of their own, and parents joined co-chairs Kim McRae and Eleanor Nahley in the HCA Lobby for cocktails. It was all too soon that the doors of the event hall opened, announcing dinner. With stunning views of Nashville’s skyline as the backdrop, Martha and Malcolm Greenwood of Big Events focused on creating a simple yet elegant setting. Tables draped in Tri Delta blue were topped with lavish white arrangements of lilies, hydrangeas, anemones and calla lilies. Custom Eve of Janus napkins that debuted at last year’s gala were at each place setting thanks to 2017 co-chair ML Davis, who washed and pressed every one. Everyone moved to the CMA Theater following dinner. Junior honorary chair Sam Garrett — who was also a Marshal — and honorary chair Debra Friedman spoke before the ceremony began. Emcee Tracy Kornet introduced the Signs and Marshals to an adoring audience of parents, siblings and friends. As in years past, the party really began after the presentation. The Atlanta Allstars had everyone dancing in no time. Parents took a break to enjoy fudge tartlets, Meyer lemon squares and chocolate chip cookies before slipping out to head home. The Signs, Marshals and their dates stayed until the last song finished to celebrate their role in this time-honored tradition.

Premier Crew Honoring women in wine at l’Eté du Vin Patrons Dinner

W

hen planning the 39th annual l’Eté du Vin, chair Tom Black and the Nashville Wine Auction revisited the 1998 affair, which celebrated talented, successful women in the wine industry — and which Tom also happened to chair. Of the seven women honored at this year’s Women in Wine, three attended the fundraiser 20 years ago. It was a thrill to welcome back winemaking expert and global consultant Zelma Long, Marimar Estate Vineyards’ Marimar Torres and Lindy Novak of Spottswoode Estate. Joining them were Vitalie Taittinger, who runs the marketing for her family’s Champagne house, Shannon Staglin of Staglin Family Vineyard, Crockett & Starr’s Pam Starr and Central Coast winemaker Jenne Lee Bonaccorsi. More than 100 guests motored to the Thompson Nashville for an evening of stellar food and wine at the Friday night Patrons Dinner. While mingling with the honorees, they enjoyed glasses of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, the house’s flagship wine, and gourmet bites including grilled oysters, caviar tarts with Tennessee paddlefish caviar and chicken liver profiteroles prepared by chef Julia Sullivan. Nathan Duensing, executive chef at Thompson’s Marsh House, shared duties with her in preparing the multi-course meal. Dinner took place in a chic, monochromatic room with arrangements of cascading calla lilies and stylish linens designed by Amos Gott of AmosEvents. Nathan’s red snapper crudo and roasted duck breast from Julia were followed by a dry-aged ribeye cooked to perfection by Nathan. The feast concluded with mille-feuille prepared by the Thompson’s pastry chef, Lisa Marie White, which was paired with an outstanding Sauternes. Generous collectors who donated wines for the night included Tom and former Nashvillians Deby and Keith Pitts, who flew in from California for the weekend. Tom played the consummate host, visiting every table, replenishing glasses and drumming up interest in two exclusive wine dinners available only that night. His efforts literally paid off, and wine enthusiasts snapped up the unforgettable evenings to set l’Eté du Vin on the course to another record-setting year.

Go With the Flow Bidding with heart at l’Eté du Vin

T

he 2018 l’Eté du Vin came to an exciting close with the gourmet dinner and auction held at Loews Vanderbilt Hotel. Attendees at the final event of Nashville Wine Auction’s three-day celebration of Women in Wine were as passionate about bidding on outstanding bottles as they were about raising funds to support the nonprofit’s fight against cancer. At the lively opening reception, guests hovered around the bars trying to determine which featured wine to taste first. Offerings from producers Champagne Taittinger, Staglin Family Vineyard, Crocker & Starr, Marimar Estate and Spottswoode Estate came from houses with exceptional women — this year’s honorees — at the helm. With glasses in hand, people turned their attention to bidding. The busy silent auction overflowed into the ballroom where a calmer mood prevailed. Amos Gott continued the sophisticated, monochromatic palette of the Patrons Dinner using mixed metals to set off abundant centerpieces of white hydrangeas and roses. Numerous bottles also decorated tables thanks to the bring-your-own-wine tradition that encourages sharing one’s cellar favorites with friends throughout dinner. Effervescent chatter filled the ballroom as everyone sat down for the meal, causing auctioneer Fritz Hatton to remark, “Well, first and foremost this is a party,” as he attempted to capture their attention. That didn’t take as long as he thought because bidding on the 68 lots of highly desirable wines and spectacular experiences kicked off in style with a fantastic collection of Krug. Frenzied bidding continued nonstop through the multicourse dinner, pausing only to refuel when gourmet tater tots were served. Whether it was an abundance of wine or an outpouring of generosity — or some magical combination of the two — the 39th annual l’Eté du Vin raised $1.2 million, surpassing chair Tom Black’s goal. The night was filled with good food, great wine and close friends. More importantly, the record-setting amount will be put towards Nashville Wine Auction’s fight against cancer.

Ready to Rock The TPAC Gala puts the cool in school

T

ennessee Performing Arts Center gave theater fans the freedom to channel their inner rock stars for the School of Rock-themed TPAC Gala. When it came to picking the theme for the night (which is always pulled from the upcoming Broadway season at TPAC), co-chairs Micaela and Sam Reed and Katherine and Chris Spencer called School of Rock a “no-brainer.” It was evident by the enthusiastic participation from partygoers that the choice was a popular one. Rock music blared through the speakers as guests entered the lobby and were greeted by Kiss and Guns N’ Roses impersonators. The fake Gene Simmons, Axl Rose and Slash weren’t the only ones turning heads though. TPAC Board Chair Jim Schmitz was dressed as AC/DC’s guitarist Angus Young in shorts, coat and tie, schoolboy cap and Chuck Taylors while Eleanor Whitworth sported her own spin on a school uniform with a plaid pleated skirt, sneakers and a black leather jacket. At dinner on the stage of Andrew Jackson Hall, Phillipe Chadwick created stunning floral centerpieces that paid homage to legendary bands. A Queen-centric arrangement was topped with a crown, and the Guns N’ Roses’ flowers included — you guessed it — guns and roses. Students from Nashville School of the Arts provided the dinner music, pausing briefly for the presentation of the Teacher of the Year Award to Miya Robertson and the Applause Awards to Bridgestone Americas and John Cody. Brent Hyams paid tribute to TPAC’s longtime president and CEO, Kathleen O’Brien, who will be retiring next year. A moving video from Aubrey Harwell, who was board chair when Kathleen was appointed to the role, preceded the unveiling of a commissioned portrait of Kathleen that will hang in the new donors lounge. Attendees enjoyed a three-course dinner from Sargent’s, inspired by an “elegant school lunch,” before concluding the musical night at the Late Party with a concert from My So-Called Band. A rockin’ end to an unforgettable night!

Silver Jubilee Toasting 25 years of Nfocus at a lavish soirée

hen Herbert Fox founded Nfocus a quarter century ago, he would enter every party, quickly find a confidante and ask, “Are my people here?” Herbert would’ve been delighted that his people came out in droves to Cheekwood to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the magazine at a lavish, over-the-top soirée. Clare Armistead and Nan Parrish — two of Herbert’s dearest friends and founding investors in the publication — were the belles of the ball, serving as honorary co-chairs and graciously greeting nearly every guest as they arrived. Clare brought along a copy of the August 2005 issue, with Herbert gracing the cover, and a framed photograph of him, which was promptly displayed at the party. Guests entered through the Robertson Color Garden, taking in the colorful whimsical Cracking Art exhibit on their way into the party. White gloved hands poked through a boxwood wall to serve partygoers the en vogue cocktail, Aperol Spritz, in one of the most creative cocktail displays we’ve ever seen (if we do say so ourselves). Inside Botanic Hall, Amos Gott, alongside Nfocus marketing director Lynsie Shackelford, transformed the room into a chic vision in white with black-and-white gallery-style prints from Nfocus’ early issues lining the walls and sophisticated floral arrangements adding bright bursts of purple and pink throughout the space. And beyond discussing Nfocus’ storied past, the most popular topic of conversation had to be the food! Who made it? Have you tried it? Did you see that? G Catering blew guests away with their inventive, playful, delicious treats. We’re talking white chocolate bark hanging from umbrellas, caprese cones in acrylic trays floating through the party on oversized balloons, tuna poke in tiny tin cans, beet and goat cheese fruit roll-ups, tubes of chocolate mousse, an art table handpainted with edible sauces and so much more. With so many surprising delights to discover, it’s no wonder that the crowd at this sold-out celebration lingered until the very last minute. After 25 years of covering the hottest parties on Nashville’s social scene, Nfocus surely knows how to throw one too. by Nancy Floyd photographs by Alan Poizner continued on page 42

A Girl’s Best Friend? Ladies play the field at Chukkers for Charity

I

t was glitz and glamour for the 22nd annual Chukkers for Charity with the theme Diamonds and Divots. The crowd expected a magnificent afternoon, because for the first time, the competing teams were all female. Co-chairs Nina Lindley and Matt Paco added more shine with a bit of sibling rivalry by naming Eleanor Menefee Parkes’ Colonial Hill Farm and her brother John Menefee’s Ironhorse Farms as sponsors of the two teams. Patrons mingled under the tent sipping on snazzy Jack and ginger cocktails while tailgaters put final sparkling touches on their tents. Everyone’s attention turned to the field as the honorees of the day — Poppy Duke and Madeline Lakoff — rode out to kick things off. A touching tribute and moment of silence for the late Albert Menefee, who had contributed in so many ways to Rochelle Center and Saddle Up, preceded the national anthem. It was a dazzling display of skill and strength as Team Colonial Hill (Gracie Brown, Lexie Armstrong, Dawn Jones and Allie Henderson) and Team Ironhorse (Martha Bennett, Virginia Ingram, Hope Arellano and Gillian Johnston) played fiercely. At halftime, the players got a well-deserved break, and attendees took part in the well-established rituals of stomping divots, checking out antique autos and watching the too-cute stick horse race. Meanwhile the judges scrutinized tailgaters’ decorations and determined Bluewater Creek Polo Club the grand prize winner. The second half of the match was equally as exciting. In the end, Team Ironhorse won 6-5, and Dawn Jones was named MVP. Eleanor and John cast aside their afternoon of sibling rivalry, and the celebration continued. This year, everyone was a winner at Chukkers for Charity. The polo match confirmed the revitalization of the sport for women and showcased the dedication and athleticism of the players. Plus, the event raised more than $220,000 for Saddle Up and Rochelle Center, which both make a difference in the lives of hundreds of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Golden Nights Petey’s Preds Party signals the start of the season

W

hile hockey fans in other cities can sense their favorite time of year is near by the cooling fall air, Nashville is a little different. Here, we have 95-degree days through September. Here, we wear tank tops to the home season opener. Here, the only way we really know hockey season is about to start is when it’s time to party down at Petey’s Preds Party. The annual September fundraiser was founded by the Peterson Foundation for Parkinson’s, an organization that aims to “support and enhance lives of people with Parkinson’s, their care partners and families.” It was started in 2009 by Brent Peterson, the Nashville Predators’ longtime associate coach who was diagnosed with the disease in 2004. And though much care is taken to raise money for and bring attention to the very serious issue — according to the foundation more than 5,000 people in Middle Tennessee have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s — a lot of fun is always had too. Bridgestone Arena was turned into a beautiful blue and gold dining room. Revelers battled over silent auction items — signed merchandise, tickets to upcoming Preds games and even a chance to sit in the announcers booth — and many of the players were on hand to pose for pictures, sign jerseys and talk about their hopes for the upcoming season. While last season ended with a tinge of bittersweetness — the team did win the Central Division title and the Presidents’ Trophy, but they were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs — there was no sign of hard feelings. Captain Roman Josi and his teammates including Ryan Ellis, Ryan Johansen and Colton Sissons were all exchanging hugs and high fives after seeing each other for the first time since summer began. And Pekka Rinne was especially hard to miss — the 6-foot5-inch goaltender was dressed in a stunning blush velvet suit, and he flashed a big grin and exclaimed “Oh, yeah!” when asked if he was ready to hit the ice. So with one more successful Petey’s Preds Party in the books, it’s time to play some hockey. Let’s drop the puck!

Freedom and Healing End Slavery Tennessee hosts Voices of Freedom

M

ore than 300 supporters of End Slavery Tennessee headed to Oz Arts Nashville for this year’s Voices of Freedom. The eye-opening and inspirational evening combines candid stories from human trafficking survivors with art and music to celebrate the nonprofit’s accomplishments in confronting slavery in our state. In the lounge, the attendees were simultaneously ordering from the bar and snacking on appetizers from Dream Catering. Some took advantage of the unusually mild evening to step out on the lawn and watch jets zoom in and out of neighboring Tune Airport while others were captivated by The Pour Girl, Valerie Landri, who was conducting an acrylic pour demonstration and creating canvases for the silent auction. The auction, which ran through the gallery and into the Grand Salon, offered additional artwork painted by survivors and clients of ESTN as well as other special items. Everyone kept an alert eye out for CEO Derri Smith, who wouldn’t have missed the night despite undergoing major surgery only weeks before. The powerful program featured Morgan Davis performing a dramatic reading of “Reclaiming Me,” written by a survivor about her victim experience. Margie Quin, program director of criminal justice at Cumberland University, told her fascinating story of working undercover with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in 12 operations to understand trafficking crimes in order to help victims. Debi Tate, director of the administrative offices of the courts, humbly accepted the Impact Award for making it a priority to address trafficking in our juvenile courts. The night ended with songs from Keith Hetrick, Kristen Kelly, and Between the Lines duo Steve Dean and Cara Graham Hogan. Founded in 2012, End Slavery Tennessee strategically confronts human trafficking in our state and promotes the healing of survivors. It has quickly grown into one of the strongest models in the nation for aftercare and change. With meaningful and successful events like Voices of Freedom, it will continue to help people cross the bridge from being a victim to being a survivor.

From the entryway, guests step down into a sunken living room where charcoal velvet sofas and dark brown leather club chairs flank a limestone fireplace. Katy Bell had the ceiling beams — originally painted white — wrapped with reclaimed wood. A zinc coffee table and a marble accent table also add interest.

The house has two dining rooms. The more casual of the two is just off the kitchen and has a shiplap ceiling painted white with criss-crossed beams. A custom farm table with intentionally mismatched leather chairs and an antique crystal chandelier happily marry casual and classic.

Katy Bell Hamnes, Katy Bell Interiors

A Casual Classic in Oak Hill When a couple and their three young children recently relocated to Nashville from Los Angeles and were interviewing interior designers, rather than just ask them to describe their decorating styles, designer Katy Bell Hamnes took a more novel approach: She requested the husband and wife each bring their favorite date night outfits to the initial meeting without conferring with one another. “It’s interesting,” says Katy Bell. “My experience is that people tend to dress the way they want their homes to feel.” When the wife brought a denim dress and the husband nice jeans and a khaki shirt, she concluded their styles are casual but classic, and as an added bonus, they have similar taste. After closing on a 6,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home in Oak Hill (completed in 2017 by Focus Builders), the couple gave Katy Bell the keys. They had conference calls weekly and visited Nashville twice before moving but comfortably put the project in the capable hands of their designer. Katy Bell didn’t need to start from scratch. The home already had lots of architectural detail. In keeping with Focus Builders’ signature style, the house boasts clean lines, tons of windows, and steep gables and roof pitches. “We don’t like the plain box very much,” says Seth Argo, president and CEO of Focus Builders. by Whitney Clay Photographs by Paige Rumore Photography

Misti Fahr-Filipiak, Design Hive

Modern Flair in Edgehill Misti Fahr-Filipiak of Design Hive doesn’t specialize in the ordinary. She’s studied how personality affects style — and how design in turn affects us — and transferred those realities into her personal design philosophy. Each project she works on focuses on the unique aspects of the space as well as the individuality of the owner. (She is adamant about the fact that she doesn’t recreate Pinterest boards.) So when she was hired to turn this 1937 property into a dream trifecta — the owners’ primary residence, a bed and breakfast and a creative space featuring a personal recording studio — Misti sought to transform this home into a one-of-a-kind, drool-worthy space as inspiring as it is functional. With one look at this three-story, four-bedroom, five-bath house, affectionately known as Buffalo Soul, it’s clear that Misti succeeded in doing just that.

by Lauren Langston Stewart Phtographs by Adrienne Figeuroa and Paige Rumore Photography continued on page 62

Misti sought to maintain the integrity of the home, and she gave a nod to its past by accenting an original cabinet in the downstairs hallway. The cabinet provides the right amount of balance between the home’s history and its modern vision.

Since the living room is the first thing guests see when entering, Misti sought to make it a knockout. Color and texture are played up though contrasting aspects like a blue velvet couch and plush leather chairs. She calls it “a Southwest feel with a Music City vibe.

The kitchen was the area Misti chose to take the most risk in, painting the custom cabinetry what she refers to as Buffalo Blue, opting for soapstone countertops, and achieving a sleek, modern feel by hiding the appliances behind cabinet doors. The whole space is tried together with a stunning vintage rug from Apple & Oak.

The keeping room, located off the kitchen, was built to look and feel more like an enclosed porch with its planked wood walls. The walls and windows were painted in a dark hue to draw the eye to the lush landscape outside.

Because the couple likes to do a lot of entertaining, the three sets of french doors along the home’s façade open into a receiving room. An antique table anchors the space, flanked by clusters of seating on one end and a music room on the other.

The design team began the project by joining the couple on a series of sightseeing and shopping excursions in New York City to gather ideas about their tastes and preferences. The curved sofa in the family room was one of the first pieces that both Steve and Lyn fell in love with, representing the “common thread” that Ray was focused on finding.

Ray Booth and Bobby McAlpine, McAlpine

Formal Functionality in Belle Meade “I love creating architecture and interiors that tell a little bit of a story of the people that live there,” says interior designer Ray Booth. When Steve and Lyn Cates were ready to tell their story, they hired Ray and his business partner, architect Bobby McAlpine, to design and build their dream Belle Meade home. With Steve favoring traditional, formal interiors and Lyn yearning for a contemporary aesthetic with feminine twists, Ray and Bobby had the daunting task of creating a space that merged the couple’s design sensibilities and met the family’s needs. Fortunately, this design dream team was up to the challenge, and the result is a well-balanced, beautiful, functional space that feels like home. The front of the house, which includes a long receiving room for hosting large parties, greets guests with a sophisticated formality, while the rear of the home is more relaxed with intimate areas for the family to gather. Lyn’s extensive collection of Asian artifacts, acquired from a childhood spent living in the Far East, played an instrumental role in both the décor and the architecture of the home. The pieces serve as tabletop accessories and are displayed in various niches that were constructed throughout the space, adding pops of color and points of interest throughout the otherwise neutral rooms. A chic blend of classic and current with hints of the unexpected throughout, the home is thoughtfully designed and curated but not easily defined. “Good things are hard to define,” says Ray. “Good things are hard to pin in one simple category.” by Nancy Floyd Photographs by Eric Piasecki, courtesy of Rizzoli publications from Ray Booth’s Evocative Interiors

Amy Smith at Blue Door Framing stripped the silvering off of antique mirrors, removing the reflectivity and revealing a beautiful blue coloration that complements the room. The mirrors were hung over the door between the family room and the kitchen keeping room.

Modern Simplicity in Brentwood Susan Walker used to see country crooner Eddy Arnold around town — always in a suit. “He was so nice and polite, and now I’m living on his land,” she said. Brentwood’s Você community was built on Eddy’s Granny White Pike property — where he lived from 1950 to his death in 2008 — with an intent to embrace the environmental beauty and to preserve the natural landscape whenever possible. Susan and her husband, Dow Walker, moved into their three-bedroom Você home last year. Susan had known just what she wanted, and when she first sent inspiration photos to architect Nick Dryden, he said he freaked out and had to show everyone in the office — it was almost exactly what he had already drawn up for her. Lindsay Lyons and Kathy Pollock worked with Susan to design the interior to complement Nick’s design — an open concept living area with soaring ceilings, oak hardwood flooring, and double doors that continue the indoor living space out onto the outdoor patio, complete with ample seating and a fireplace. by Lauren Langston Stewart Photographs by Garett Buell of StudioBuell

Susan told Nick she didn’t need a dining room, so he created a stunning multipurpose space with white wood-paneled walls, an inviting window seat and tons of storage, which Susan uses for craft supplies for her grandkids. Lindsay and Kathy brought in pillows for texture and coziness as well as a dining room table and chairs that are as perfect for crafting as entertaining.

Antique rugs purchased from Essy’s Rug Gallery in Franklin bring in the right amount of color. Simple spaces feature rugs with hues that pop while the living and dining rooms use rugs created from a process that strips undesirable shades from the original rug, resulting in floor coverings that anchor color and design with a neutral palette.

White walls — accented with shiplap painted white and oriental white honed marble — create a modern yet homey feel and a neutral palette that emphasizes texture and allows aspects like wood plank ceilings, gray bathroom cabinetry, accent pillows and more to take center stage.

The furnishings may be modern and the textures — marble, wood, iron — solid, but the spaces feel serene and inviting. Tailor-made Eskayel pillows lighten up the living room, and artwork and keepsakes collected over the years provide pops of color throughout. Asian antiques, such as the circa-1880 Japanese chest in the dining room, are the perfect complement to the contemporary setting.

Jonathan Pierce, Pierce & Company

Tranquil Haven on West End Interior designer Jonathan Pierce always admired the small gated community West End Close when driving along West End Avenue, and when one of the 12 townhouses became available, he jumped at the chance to live there. As the owner of Pierce & Company, his eponymous design firm, he had access to the best resources to completely renovate the three-story structure and turn it into a haven. Jonathan embraced the midcentury modern tenets of functionality, ease and simplicity, and he opened up the main floor, used a soothing color palette of grays and whites throughout, and anchored it all with metals and woods. Asian antiques and patterned accent pillows mixed with art and accessories that he’s collected over the years add eye-catching detail. Jonathan’s haven is for sale, and the new owner will have a magnificent foundation from which to make the house their own. by Holly Hoffman Photographs by Nathan McEvoy with Showcase Photographers continued on page 74

Each of the three fireplaces has custom marble finishes that uphold the modernist theme. In the music room, herringbone tiles were extended to center the hearth on the wall, and the thick iron frame affords a spot for treasured pieces. Oversized slabs make an impressive statement in the living room. In the master suite, white tiles set in a diamond pattern were laid over the original fireplace.

Jonathan gutted the kitchen and changed its layout to create an open living area on the main floor. Custom floorto-ceiling cabinetry by Poliform combines contemporary style with perfect functionality. Simple lines and the absence of hardware conceal an abundance of storage in drawers and behind doors. The countertop on the custom island is Imperial Danby marble as are the backsplashes — including the one in a hidden morning bar.

She enlisted her friend and interior designer Benjamin Vandiver — a darling of local celebrities and known for creating spaces that are “refined, carefully curated and casually exquisite” — to accomplish her goal. Walls once painted in predictable neutral tones are now drenched in bold colors, and luxurious fabrics, dramatic lighting and patterned rugs add layers of texture in this meticulously designed home. Perhaps most striking are the extraordinary wallpapers used throughout, from intertwined serpents and birds in the entry hall to tessellated hexagons in moody teal and gold from David Hicks in the pool house. Unique vintage pieces complete the setting for the perfect mix of warmth and sophistication. by Holly Hoffman Photographs by Lynsey Culwell

An underwater theme in the spectacular formal dining room was inspired by the oversized photographic print and is enhanced by the spiky, abstract chandelier that might remind one of a sea urchin. The bespoke wall covering, which has no repeat, was hand-marbled by Brooklyn wallpaper studio Calico. The octagonal David Hicks rug is timeless, yet contemporary.

In the living room, rich coffee colors used on the walls, drapes and sofa create an intimate space. Velvets, shearling, wood blinds and a Karabakh rug provide texture and warmth. The smaller scale of Shin Toaster Chairs is an amusing contrast to substantial, Mad Hatter-like club chairs. Tiger print pillows and a massive lips print balance the strong gold used on the chairs.

Evolution of Design Chatting with Antiques & Garden Show keynote lecturers Bobby McAlpine and Ray Booth by Nancy Floyd photograph by paul o. Colliton

A

rchitect Bobby McAlpine and interior designer Ray Booth are the latest design pros to be named headliners at the Antiques & Garden Show. The pair, who are partners at the design firm McAlpine, will take the stage at the 2019 show, held Feb. 1-3 at the Music City Center, alongside longtime client Faith Hill. We chatted with the duo to get shopping advice, design wisdom and a sneak peek at their keynote lecture.

First of all, congratulations on being named the keynote speakers at Antiques & Garden Show. That’s exciting for all of us. What appealed to you about speaking at the show?

from ending up with a lot of them as well. We find what house and what client is appropriate for this particular thing that we’ve fallen in love with. It’s kind of a fun process.

Bobby: Getting to be together is certainly the first that comes to my mind — and certainly to get together with Faith [Hill] again as well. It’s always a treat for us. I love that show, and it’s been a decade, probably, since I’ve spoken there. Ray and I have not done it together. I think it’s a great opportunity for us.

What advice would you offer for those that are attending the Antiques & Garden Show and are shopping for their homes but aren’t professionals? What advice do you have on how to choose the right pieces, the things that will work in your home and the things that will last?

Ray: Yeah. We’ve always been big supporters of the Antiques & Garden Show from being just a participant, so it really is an exciting opportunity to now get to speak there. Certainly with Bobby and the fact that Faith is going to be with us; it’s just a thrilling opportunity, really.

Bobby: We’ve done a lot of European buying trips, and the only things that I regret are the things I didn’t buy. I would say, if you think you’re not going to be able to forget about it, you probably need to get it, because you’ll probably regret it. It will clearly be gone. It’s like an estate sale; come Sunday, it will be gone, and you didn’t get it. If it’s haunting you, act on it.

What can attendees expect from your panel with Faith Hill? Bobby: Over the course of a little more than 10 years, we did four different houses for [Tim McGraw and Faith Hill] together, so we got to know each other really well, and the wonderful thing that we got to know pretty quickly was that they’re exactly who you think and hope they are. It was always a joy in the process. I think what may be enlightening for the crowd there, too, is that Faith has extraordinarily good taste. She is always reaching and learning and pushing us in the process as well. So, together, we made a good team for a long time. Ray: She is really a major, major part of every creative decision. Exactly what Bobby said is true. Faith chose every single solitary stitch of fabric, every tape that goes on a pillow. Then we would spend copious amounts of time together. The lovely thing was, you would never go for a meeting with Faith that you weren’t offered a cup of coffee, a cup of tea, lunch, the amazing dessert that had been fabricated there at the house at any time. When you have somebody who is that graceful and welcoming, it stands out. The Antiques & Garden Show is the largest and the longest running in the country. Do you two have plans to do some shopping while you’re here for it? Bobby: Always. I always get in a lot of trouble there and have to come away with things, usually for myself. I know Ray might be a little more professional, looking for clients, but I usually buy things. It’s like going out the first day of Christmas shopping. You come home with a lot of things for yourself first, and then we focus on everybody else. Ray: I always like to think that we’re a bit like an adoption agency. It is that we go in and we fall in love with all of these pieces and parts. It’s only my thin wallet that keeps me

Ray: I would second what Bobby says. I think it’s not always about how a certain piece is going to relate to everything else in your house. A lot of these purchases are real emotional buys. I think you react to that, and you buy it. It will come in, and it will encourage you to make other changes in your house. I think so many people limit themselves by trying to really figure out exactly where it’s going to go and where it will live in the house, but the truth is if it’s something that you love, it becomes a catalyst. It will cause change. It will cause a ripple effect. It will allow you to reinvent and see your house differently. I know you have a lot of design advice and wisdom to share, but is there one overarching motto that you live by when it comes to designing a space? When it comes to building a home or decorating that home, is there one piece of advice that comes to mind? Bobby: Where and how you live, keeping it up with your life and who you are now and what your life looks like now is likely very different than it was 10 years ago. … Whether it’s building or renovating or moving or redecorating or striking set and starting over. Sometimes I think the real value of getting it and getting it right is that it will take you a good long while and remain pertinent to your life. When it’s not anymore, I think it’s time to change. Ray: I think that’s really good advice and something that I’m going to share with my husband because he is really someone who likes to get things settled and for it not to change. We do evolve, and I think our interiors are such reflections of where we are at any particular given moment and what kind of house or place that we’re residing in. As those things change and evolve, I think we shouldn’t try to hold on too steady and too hard to what was and allow for our environments, our interior environments, to change with us.

a Bro ok e Marsh marries Mark O wen Fu qua

Amanda Marsh and Mark Fuqua met in 2014 on a blind date arranged by a friend who works with Amanda at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. “After a number of days at the pool and walks on the Katy Trail, Mark took me out for a three-course french fry dinner for my birthday,” said Amanda. He proposed in July 2017 by surprising Amanda when she came home from a Saturday morning spin class. They married in April 2018 on the roof of the The Bridge Building in Nashville with the Rev. Guy Griffith of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. “After a chilly week,” said the bride, “we had the perfect 70-degree day overlooking the Cumberland River.”

Amanda wore a blush tulle and lace gown designed by Monique Lhuillier and carried an array of multicolored spring blooms by Forget Me Not Flower Shop and Designs. Mark wore a suit by Tom Ford. The reception followed on a lower floor of The Bridge Building, where guests dined on a buffet by Infinity Events & Catering followed by wedding cake by Dessert Designs. They danced the night away to the tunes of The Music City Sound. “Getting our family and friends together made the day so special,” said Amanda. “Everyone made new connections and had a fantastic time. Many out-of-town guests were visiting Nashville for the

first time and took a long weekend to enjoy the sights and sounds of Music City.” After a wedding trip to Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the couple returned home to Dallas, where Amanda is a buyer of denim collections at Neiman Marcus and Mark is in commercial real estate. She is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and has her MBA from Boston College Carroll School of Management. Mark is an alumnus of Montgomery Bell Academy and Vanderbilt University. Their parents are Lana and Jeffrey Marsh of New Hope, Pennsylvania, and Cathey and Wilford Fuqua of Nashville.

Easier Said Than Done Landscaping the grounds has been a surprisingly arduous process. “I thought, this will be easy because we have all these nursery providers in Tennessee,” says Crissy. “We’ll just ask them to donate some plants, and we’ll get out there and make it look better.” But it soon became clear they would need a detailed master plan and an architect. A search committee chose renowned Nashville landscape architect Ben Page. Then it was time to hold fundraisers and approach potential corporate donors. Those efforts netted more than $2 million.

The Gardens at the Tennessee Executive Residence

photographs by daniel Meigs

As her time at the Tennessee Executive Residence winds down, first lady Crissy Haslam walks through the newly landscaped gardens feeling sentimental. “It’s very nostalgic for me because I loved going to my grandmother’s house, and I would always say, ‘Take me out to the garden. Let me see what’s growing.’ ” Restoring the gardens has been one of the first lady’s main projects over the past seven years, and it happened quite by accident. “I never dreamed before I got here that this is what I would be working on,” says Crissy. “I was going to work on literacy and a bunch of other initiatives, which we’ve done also.” Once arriving at the governor’s mansion, which had just been renovated by former Gov. Phil Bredesen’s wife, Andrea Conte, the Haslams quickly realized the home’s gardens, situated on 10 acres of land in Oak Hill, were in dire need of a little TLC of their own. With the help of volunteers, including certified master gardeners and garden club members throughout the state, the property has been restored to its original glory. Crissy says particular attention was paid to honoring the 1929 time period when the Ridley Wills family built the house. The gardens are now the perfect locale for hosting visiting dignitaries or school children on field trips. by Whitney Clay

The Secret Garden

When Time Began

Veggie Tales

The gardens are designed to resemble rooms, each with a distinct personality. After passing a wall of rose of Sharon and an iris garden, Crissy points out a tiny but intentional mouse hole at the bottom of an emerald green slatted wood door. “This,” she says, opening the door, “is The Secret Garden,” a lawn framed by upright yews and limestone statues at each corner, which represent the four seasons. The focal point is a bright blue Munder Skiles bench, a replica of the first American-designed bench.

The gardens, which include more than 50 species of trees, now have the distinction of being a Level II arboretum. They also include a greenhouse, a vegetable garden and a cutting garden that provides fresh flowers for the residence. An elaborate sundial by the Metal Museum in Memphis is also a highlight. It holds special appeal for children who visit on field trips, with its Tennessee symbols including the state bird, the mockingbird; the state fruit, the tomato; and the state reptile, the eastern box turtle.

One of the more remarkable features is the large vegetable garden, which includes corn — the governor’s favorite — as well as okra, eggplant, cabbage, heirloom tomatoes and a variety of other vegetables, all used in the executive kitchen. While the vegetable garden is not certified organic because of the laborious process that’s required, the gardeners don’t use any pesticides. “We tell kids if they want to pick a cherry tomato and pop it in their mouth, it’s clean,” says Crissy. “Just rainwater and maybe a little dirt.”

Changing Times Expert etiquette advice from John Bridges

Zipped Up My daughter has grown into an attractive, successful woman. But I’m her father, and I don’t understand her clothes. We have a good relationship, I think. My wife and I go out regularly for lunch or to a movie with her, and she dresses relatively modestly. I know I can’t change the way women dress these days, but I ran into her and a date at a party last month, and I didn’t know what to say. I know her body’s very nice, but she was showing it off — from both the bottom and the top. I’m not going to accept that I’m an old fogey. What can I say? Or do I just learn to live with it? —Anonymous, Brentwood Your daughter, it seems, knows how to dress as a daughter and how to dress as a date. They’re not the same at all. To her thinking, they may require separate wardrobes — maybe even entirely separate closets. She manages to dress “relatively modestly” while she’s out for an afternoon with you. It would be interesting to see what that outfit looks like. It’s probably not the way she dressed around the house, growing up. Like it or not, she lives her own life now. She knows what she’s wearing, and she knows who’s likely to notice. But you’re her father, and you have a right to notice too, so go ahead and mention it. Keep in mind that, if you’re verging on fogeyism, she may figure you have little sense of fashion. So run the conversation, or your concerns, by a woman ahead of time. Is your wife her mother? If she’s not, you’ll probably be wise not to use her as an expert witness.

Not for Sale A dear friend recently died. She had a lovely gift shop, and I bought all sorts of things there. I used to drop in just to visit. I guess I like the new owner fine. I run into her here and there, and she’s asked me when I’m going to be back. Quite frankly, it makes me sad to go into the store now, so I’ve been going to other places, even to pick up things I always bought there, like cocktail napkins and birthday cards. I know I ought to get over it but don’t think I can just now. Do I owe her an explanation? Should I force myself to show up? —Anonymous, Hillwood A cup of coffee shared among the birthday cards was a cherished experience, one you’ll remember forever. It probably had almost nothing to do with shopping. You have no reason to forget it. Maybe you can accept the fact that the new owner is doing her own sidewalk marketing; but if she’s getting pushy, go ahead and explain where you are, emotion-wise. There’s no reason to go into detail, but there’s also no reason to keep her guessing and asking where you’ve been. Don’t worry about building a replacement relationship with her. It’s a fact that time changes everything. For the time being, shop around.

Party of the Past 1993-1994

The outrageously successful Artrageous Evening, which benefited Nashville Cares, was a gallery-hopping, bacchanalian night on the town that consistently attracted more than 1,000 art lovers and party animals. The dress code would have read “anything goes” because attendees decked out in everything from denim to drag and then some. If held today, these partygoers wouldn’t consider taking anything as plebeian as Uber or Lyft. They traveled in style — chartered limos and vans, aka “Van Goghs” — to galleries where they schmoozed, sipped and snacked until it was time to repeat at the next spot. The last stop was Vanderbilt’s dreary Stadium Club, somehow miraculously transformed into the ultimate disco with pounding music, endless cocktails and unforgettable moments, like the year living statues in marbleized paint came off their pedestals to join in the frenzy.
