Salt Designed by nature
Salt
‌ a collection inspired by the sea, made of clay, formed by water and air, created by fire and passion.
We did the photo shoot for Salt in an orangery in Sküne, in surroundings that could just as well be on Gotland, in Österlen or in Provence. The natural tones and textures of the service come into their own against this tranquil backdrop – a setting that is as timeless as Salt stoneware itself.
Location
Salt
– designed by nature, is a stoneware service made in Portugal, a nation world-famous for its time-honoured traditions of ceramics and stoneware. As this new decade dawns, more and more of us are choosing products made with respect for nature – unique, sustainable products that will last a lifetime. Stoneware has been around for thousands of years and is still used today by 3-star Michelin restaurants, families in the country side and city-dwellers alike. To complement Salt, there is also Sugar and Wood. Sugar stoneware is hand-made by artisans, its white glaze tinged with beige and grey and subtly decorated to suggest the effect of ripples in water. Wood serving tray and wooden plates are fashioned from exquisite acacia wood. Mix Salt, Sugar and Wood for a truly out-of-theordinary table setting that combines naturalistic tones and unique glazes with organic shapes and the warmth of real wood. Salt, Sugar and Wood are like members of a family – each with its own personality, yet all sharing traits that show they belong together.

Unique pieces Every item of stoneware has its own unique personality. Individually they may appear to be very different. When combined in a table setting, however, the effect is both attractive and harmonious, with the nuances of the glaze subtly replicated in the various pieces. It is crucial that our customers understand that their service is unique and exclusive. This needs to be conveyed in all communication, from product folders and inserts to social media and press releases.
Sugar As a complement to Salt, we have produced the Sugar stoneware series: one large round plate and smaller plates in organic shapes. These are equally handy for both stand-up gatherings and for sit-down snacks or cheese and biscuits. The white glaze of these items is tinged with beige and grey and subtly decorated to suggest the effect of ripples in water. Mix Salt and Sugar for a stunning table setting. Care instructions: Foods such as beetroot and turmeric can cause discoloration on stoneware and porcelain. Rinse the item before putting it into the dishwasher. To remove marks and scratches, simply place a dishwasher tablet in warm water in items that have been marked. Leave the tablet to dissolve for a few hours or overnight and then gently rub off any marks with a sponge.
Wood The Wood series comprises serving boards and plates fashioned from beautiful acacia wood. These are perfect not only for tapas or bread and cheese, but also for a breakfast sandwich or a little treat with your afternoon coffee. Wood adds warmth and that ‘little extra’ to every table setting. Care instructions: After hand-washing the untreated wooden items, we recommend treating them with natural food oil such as rapeseed or sunflower oil. Dishwashers dry out the wood, leaving it dull and lustreless. The wood gets darker by the treatment.

Colour palette
For the photo shoot we chose a setting where natural tones of grey, blue, beige and brown were complemented with elements of wood and greenery. For both the food and the decorative plants we have worked with tones that blend with those in the glazes of the service. Our aim has been to create a sense of harmony in the pictures, a mix of simplicity and graceful elegance.

Seashore
A table setting with Salt evokes the atmosphere of a leisurely stroll along the seashore, where the waves roll gently up the beach and then recede. That fluid movement is captured in the glaze. It resembles a snapshot of the salty, foaming water and the quiet beauty of nature.
Autumn
Storytelling Invite your friends to a table where natural hues, unique glazes, organic shapes and the warmth of wood set the tone. It’s a table setting with an irresistible draw. Serve food that is sumptuous yet uncomplicated and simple to prepare. A stand-up starter where guests select their favourites from pineapple and mozzarella bites, mini bread rolls, oven-baked carrots with creamy parmesan, and oysters, enjoyed with a glass of Prosecco. Then a sit-down main course of tasty seafood pasta with baguette twists, followed by a rich chocolate cake with the added zing of salt flakes and blueberries. And, as the light begins to fade, out comes the cheese board so that conversation can continue until a new day begins to dawn.

Food
We display only healthy foods that do not adversely affect the environment. As the tableware has links with the sea, our choice includes oysters, mussels and fish. Desserts are based on the kinds of raw ingredients that are good for us. Recipes will be made available to customers.
Recipe Pineapple and mozzarella bites on rosemary stalks 25 pieces • 1 fresh pineapple • 25 mozzarella balls (can be purchased in bags) • 25 twigs of fresh rosemary
Here’s what to do: Carefully peel the pineapple and cut the fruit into 1.5 cm cubes. Grill the pineapple dices on an open grill or a contact grill. Cut 15 cm long stalks of rosemary and remove all the leaves near the base. Spike the mozzarella balls and the pineapple cubes on the rosemary stalks and serve.
Recipe Parsley root soup with smoked salmon 4 servings
• 800 g peeled and shredded parsley roots • 1 shredded leek • 1 tablespoon salt (for the boiling water) • 2 dl crème fraiche • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh rosemary • 200 g shredded smoked salmon • salt and ground black pepper Here’s what to do: Boil the parsley root and leek in 1.5 litres of salted water for approximately 10 minutes. Mix with a hand blender until the soup is completely smooth. Whip crème fraiche and add rosemary and smoked salmon to the mix. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve the soup piping hot with a dab of rosemary crème fraiche.
Recipe Baked root vegetables with creamy parmesan 4 servings • Mixed root vegetables (for example, carrots and parsnips) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 teaspoon chili flakes • 4 garlic cloves • 1 lemon • salt flakes Parmesan cream: • 2 dl crème fraiche • 100 g parmesan cheese • ½ lemon • salt flakes Here’s what to do: Heat the oven to 225° C. Peel the root vegetables and the garlic (keep the leaves if they are still on the vegetables). Finely chop the garlic. Put the root vegetables in an ovenproof dish and gently drizzle the olive oil on top. Add garlic, herbs and spices and mix well. Roast the vegetables in the oven for approximately 30 minutes until they are beautifully browned. Serve with the parmesan cream. Grate the parmesan cheese and mix with crème fraiche. Add the juice from half a lemon and add salt to taste.
Recipe Shellfish pasta frutti di mare 4 servings
• 400 g pasta, preferably a thick variety of spaghetti • 600 g mixed shellfish (blue mussels, scallops and langoustines) • 6 cloves garlic • 3 shallots • 3 dl white wine • 2 trays of cocktail tomatoes • olive oil • salt and black pepper • 1 dl chopped parsley • 2 teaspoons chili flakes • parmesan cheese for serving
Here’s what to do: Clean the mussels by rinsing them in running water and remove the ‘beard’ with a knife. Throw away any mussels that have opened and do not close when tapped on the shell. Peel and chop the shallots and garlic, and then sear them quickly in olive oil in a saucepan or sauté pan. Cut the tomatoes in halves and let them fry in the same pan for a couple of minutes. Pour in the wine, add salt and pepper according to taste and sprinkle the chili flakes into the mix. Leave the sauce to boil for 15 minutes. While the sauce is boiling, boil the pasta as instructed on the packet. Choose a fairly thick pasta if possible, as this is less liable to break. Add the mussels to the shallots, tomatoes and wine sauce and leave to boil for about 5 minutes or until all the mussels have opened. Then mix in half the parsley. Pour the pasta into the sauce and stir for a couple of minutes. Pour the pasta with the shellfish sauce onto a large dish and add the langoustines (which were cooked before you bought them). Sprinkle chopped parsley and plenty of grated parmesan on top. Taste, and give the dish a couple of extra turns of the salt and pepper mills before serving.
Recipe Chocolate cake with chocolate cream, blueberries and the zing of salt 8 pieces • 100 g butter • 2 eggs • 2 dl sugar • 1 dl wheat flour • ½ dl finely powdered cocoa • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar Chocolate cream • 2 dl whipping cream • 200 g dark chocolate • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar Decoration • 2 dl blueberries • 1 teaspoon salt flakes Here’s what to do: Heat the oven to 175° C. Melt the butter and let it cool. Whip the eggs and sugar until they are white and fluffy. Mix flour, cocoa and vanilla sugar. Fold the flour mixture into the eggs and add the butter. Pour the mixture into a buttered, breaded cake tin with a removable base (about 20 cm diameter) or an oblong tin (about 30 cm). Place in the heated oven for approximately 25 minutes and then remove and leave to cool in the tin. Chocolate cream Heat the cream to boiling point in a thick-bottomed pan. Remove from the heat, add vanilla sugar and chopped pieces of chocolate and stir until the chocolate has melted. Leave the cream to cool in the refrigerator for 1–2 hours, stirring a couple of times now and then. Decoration Spread the cream over the cake. Sprinkle a few salt flakes over the top and add the blueberries.

600 BC
Stoneware then and now
Stoneware has been part of human history since 2600 BC. Portugal has long been renowned for its stoneware. However, traditionally this has mostly been ovenware for soufflés and baking, as stoneware plates tend to be thick-bodied and cumbersome. It is only in the past 10–20 years that technological advances have led to a more sustainable clay and to manufacturing processes that are better suited to the production of thinner tableware such as plates. Parallel with this development, craftsmen have been experimenting with complex glazing processes and have succeeded in creating surface finishes that are beautiful and unique. It is this that is now driving worldwide demand for stoneware. The ceramicists use the glazes to give each item its own individual identity, add a sense of movement and dynamism, and turn it into a unique work of art. It’s the artist’s way to make sure that every piece is truly distinctive and genuinely exclusive.

Sustainability / manufacture The ceramics factory we work with, which is one of the foremost in Portugal, enforces strict criteria for sustainable production in order to minimise environmental impact. Clay and glazes are free from toxins, and the consumption of water, electricity and gas is closely monitored throughout the manufacturing process. The factory’s water purification system enables process water to be re-used. Surplus clay and rejected products are recycled. Our stoneware is of very high quality. It is fired at high temperatures to produce a durable surface capable of withstanding repeated use. The firing technique also ensures that the products are as non-porous as it is possible to make them. All stoneware is dishwasher-, oven- and microwave-safe.
