Canopy® OFDM Backhauls help control connectivity costs while providing the high data rates needed for Scottish Fire & Rescue Services. The Problem:
Uncontrolled network connectivity costs and low data rates at multiple fire & rescue locations. The Solution: 28 Canopy OFDM BH 60 links, including 2 connectorized links for greater distances plus integrated antennas. www.strathclydefire.org. www.arqiva.com www.motorola.com/canopy. www.connectwithcanopy.com. www.scot-tel.com. The Result: A reliable, wireless system providing the high data rates needed at minimal annual operating costs.
Background
With virtually no prospects of implementing new network applications to enhance day-to-day operations, which require high-bandwidth connectivity, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue turned to wireless wide area network provider Arqiva and Canopy OFDM reseller Scot-Tel Ltd for a solution. Situated in western Scotland and one of Europe’s biggest, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue required a cost-effective and reliable high data rate connection to its operational fire stations across the central Strathclyde area. Outdated and expensive ISDN connections were providing data rates of only up to 128 Kbps to the fire stations. “To meet the customer’s needs and expectations, Motorola’s OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) Wireless Backhaul 60s were evaluated by the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Comms Department. They were found to be the perfect accompaniment to recently installed licensed radio networking infrastructure to provide high data rate network connectivity to both city center and rural sites with minimal yearly operating costs,” says Scot-Tel Director, Graeme Porteous. “The customer required a solution which would provide increased data rates and encompass control of costs.” The BH 60 replacements cover 28 sites, providing up to 43 Mbps data rate connections at each location, with no ongoing costs. Set up and maintenance is simple and the product has been warmly received by the very experienced Fire and Rescue radio communications personnel. Covering an area of about 5,000 square kilometers, the 28 OFDM BH 60 links include two connectorized links offering greater distances (over 20 Km) or higher data rates on the shorter terrains. With easy interfacing with CISCO infrastructure, the system allows for applications such as video conferencing, VoIP, reliable high data rate corporate IT network backups, and general high data rate transfers.
