Canopy® Wireless brings affordable, high-speed broadband coverage to Australian peninsula in grant-funded project.

The Problem:

Parts of the district unable to access high-speed broadband and VoIP services plus slow, often unreliable connections with existing dial-up services. The Solution: Motorola Canopy wireless broadband. www.motorola.com/canopy. www.connectwithcanopy.com. The Result: Affordable, high-speed wireless broadband and VoIP coverage for the entire district.

Background

In a two-stage project, the entire District Council of Yorke Peninsula (DCYP) is receiving blanket wireless broadband coverage. The $1.5m project is funded by a range of bodies including the DCYP, Agile Communications, State and Federal governments and the Yorke Regional Development Board. Agile Communications is building the system using Motorola Canopy, whereas Internode is operating the wireless broadband and VoIP services. Existing towers are being upgraded with new broadband radios, while new towers are being built in several communities. Signal from the Mt. Rat tower, for example, extends up to 20 kilometers, providing wide coverage to surrounding areas. As broadband is taken up by residents and small businesses, part of the infrastructure cost is recovered from the Australian government’s Broadband Connect rebate scheme with “zero-cost installation” available to those who qualify. There is a high level of community support for the project, which helps provide wireless broadband and Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephone services to all parts of the DCYP currently unable to access such services. With infrastructure installation staged, service will be available in many areas by the end of December, 2006. Stage One was successfully completed in 2005 with the first installation at Urania. Whereas they earlier had trouble with dial-up services, Uranian farmers say the new service is working well and is making a huge difference. Whereas dial-up services would often drop out or large files would take “forever” to download, area farmers are now easily able to do their on-line banking, e-mails and farm product searches. They are also happy to have constant, on-line access to weather forecasts and find that reasonable phone calls are making a difference when doing interstate business.
