What temptations would you be better off removing from your life?

… AND YOU ANSWERED For me, the biggest temptation I would remove from my life is the temptation to compare myself to others or to some imaginary life that doesn’t exist. When I am totally present to my life and to everything I love in my life, I feel wonderful — alive, beautiful, happy, full of enthusiasm. It is only when I compare myself to other people or to “parallel lives” that aren’t real, that the darkness creeps in. How do I remove that temptation? By hanging out with positive folks like all of you here at Jeunessima! :) - Sherry /sherry.richert.belul

SCIENCE

TAKING OUT THE GARBAGE The Accumulative Waste Theory of Aging BY Dr. Ines O’Donovan

10

SCIENCE

T

o understand this theory of aging, let’s look at the cells of our bodies like the homes we live in. In the process of our daily lives, we create garbage and if that rubbish isn’t taken out, it clogs up the house, eventually causing disorder and disease.

These toxins interfere with cell function and cause aging (or at least one aspect of it, as I will explain later.) Cells are able to get rid of some waste, but over time it can build up to dangerous levels, reaching what researcher Stroiker called ‘a critical level incompatible’ with life.

Our cells operate on largely the same principle. They tend to actually produce more waste over their lives than they can properly eliminate. This toxic waste is made up of molecules damaged by oxidation, as well as damaged mitochondria.

According to the Accumulative Waste or Garbage Theory of Aging, this inability to ‘take out the trash’ from our cells is what causes aging and eventually death. Of course, some cells (just like houses) have

11

SCIENCE

fairly effective ‘garbage disposal’ systems. For instance, the cells that can divide, rid themselves of most of the garbage by diluting it in the division process (passing it over to its children, basically).

Post-mitotic (nondividing cells) cannot dilute and flush out the excess waste, leading to dysfunction, toxicity, aging, and cell death.

But what about our non-dividing cells? Unfortunately, that is where we run into a problem. Post-mitotic (non-dividing cells) cannot dilute and flush out the excess waste, leading to dysfunction, toxicity, aging, and cell death. Furthermore, our dividing cells also slow down their divisions as we age - eventually stopping completely, meaning the garbage then builds up and kills the cell. 12

SCIENCE

Is there proof for this theory? This theory has existed for many decades and has much relied on the evidence of lipofuscin, a fatty, granular waste product that accumulates in the cells and shows on the skin as ‘age spots’ or ‘liver spots’ - pigmentation long associated with age. Yet recent research by Stroiker and his team has further corroborated the Waste Accumulation Theory when they blocked the ability of dividing cells to divide, and watched the waste accumulate. These cells, which normally were able to dilute their waste when replicating, died much more quickly than usual - leading the researchers to conclude that waste accumulation leads to early aging and cell death. However, they did admit that this was only proof in simulation rather than in the actual human aging process.

Can anything be done about it? I am guessing that you are probably not just reading this for fun - you want to know how you can fight your own aging using this research. Happily, this particularly theory does have practical applications for you. It is actually closely entwined with the Free Radical Theory of Aging, which we have written about before. Because the waste in our cells is largely made up of molecules damaged by oxidation (free radicals), a diet and lifestyle

13

SCIENCE

This theory has existed for many decades and has much relied on the evidence of lipofuscin, a fatty, granular waste product that accumulates in the cells and shows on the skin as ‘age spots’ or ‘liver spots’ - pigmentation long associated with age.

which limits free radical creation where possible is helpful to avoiding excessive build-up. In addition, the Low Calorie Theory of Aging is also of use in conjunction with this theory, as a low calorie diet increases a cell’s garbage disposal ability and forces cells to consume their own waste for energy. (You must receive medical advice before entering into a low calorie diet as it needs to be nutritionally balanced or your health will suffer.) Is it a complete theory of aging? Well, no. As you can see from the section above, I referred to advice from two other aging theories in this piece alone! As we have learnt from previous articles in the Jeunessima Aging Theories Series, there is no one magical theory to explain all the myriad causes and effects of aging, so a ‘network approach’ is needed. We will be bringing you another important part of this knowledge network in the next edition of Jeunessima, with the Caloric Restriction Theory that I have already hinted at in this article.

SCIENCE

DO YOU WANT TO

LIVE LONGER? BY Claudia Romeo The ties between good health and lifespan have never been so tight. Over the years, popular press has repeatedly claimed that most people are against a longer lifespan. But is that really true?

SCIENCE

A new study by Frontiers in Genetics shows that the number of people who want to live long, healthy lives is actually greater than ever. The reason for people opting for a shorter lifespan has very much to do with the expectation of feeling frail when getting old. As aging research advances, this picture is very slowly but surely changing. Slower aging is more and more associated with good health. In the Frontiers’ survey for instance, while 60% of the respondents voted for the shortest lifespan originally, this number went down dramatically to only 20% wishing for a short life when they were told they could have continued health. In another study people were asked how long they would want to live if they were guaranteed mental and physical health. A whopping 79.7% said that they wanted to live to 120 or longer. And more than half of those would actually opt for an unlimited lifespan. What is interesting is that more than half of the people interviewed are not willing to undergo any medical treatments to slow aging, while 38% would as shown in another study by the Pew Research Center.

SCIENCE

When asked though if they think others would choose such treatments or not, the scenario data were reversed. More than half thinking most others would choose medical treatments to slow aging. It is clear, then, that our attitudes towards a longer life are changing. As a healthy lifestyle is not just a fashion fad anymore, but a concrete and responsible choice instead, it can truly lead to a longer lifespan ‌ and a longer healthspan ‌ living healthier longer. What would be your choice? At the present time, the demand for more awareness and more funding for basic aging research is constantly increasing, with new initiatives leading the way forward. In a reality where scientific research and development that target aging are blossoming, the interest of the public is key, and could open opportunities for all our health and life that we never had before.

TIPS AND TRICKS ON HOW YOU CAN FEEL

ALL THE TIME Dr. Ines O’Donovan interviews international Modeling Expert ROXANNE GOULD 19

DOYENNE

H

ave you been wondering how established international models always manage to look amazing? How they are the epiphany of beauty? What they do to feel young? Where they get the confidence from that they are exuding?

Listen to this short interview with Roxanne Gould, International Modeling Expert and actress who has spent most of her life in the spotlight; except for when she gets behind the camera to conduct photo shoots. She also runs her own modeling school, Image by Roxanne, in which she shares her wisdom with teenage girls and mature women, to help them find their inner strength and beauty, while building their self-esteem. Discover Roxanne’s tips and tricks how you too can feel beautiful from the inside out at all times, her techniques to build your confidence and her advice to maintain a youthful mind whatever age you are.

DOYENNE Ines had been so excited about the interview that we only got to hear 1 thing that Roxanne does to feel young, radiant, and beautiful. Ines did ask her afterwards though and here is what Roxanne answered:

“First, to create a feeling of youth inside myself, everyday I approach life with enthusiasm. I never know what a day will hold for me and that excites me. It keeps my outlook on life very fresh and new and filled with wonder, almost like a child. I believe this keeps a certain youthfulness alive within me. Second, I am very conscientious of what I consume—with my food, (i.e. I don’t over eat, I rarely eat sugar, I limit my alcohol content to nearly non-existent, same with coffee) and I’m very conscientious of the media I consume because I feel the negative effects it has on me psychologically as well as physically. Third, I exercise my body regularly. Not hard workouts, just regular movement to keep my body loose and relaxed and limber.”

LET’S PARTY … WITH JEUNESSIMA … IN A CITY NEAR YOU BY Dr. Ines O’Donovan, Creator & CEO of Jeunessima

We, women, often care about so many things in life: our children, our partners, our parents, our business, that we tend to forget about ourselves. We forget to take precious moments where we can focus on us, on being ourselves, on rejuvenating our body, mind and soul. The problem though is that when we don’t take some time for us, we lose our ability to care for all those people and things in life that are important to us, to gather strength, and the feeling that we can achieve anything we set our mind on. This is one of the main reasons why I had the idea of Jeunessima in the first place. A community, a movement where women not only get coaching and guidance from international experts on how to live their best life every day; but also a place where women with similar values and passions can gather, give and find support. Our vision at Jeunessima is that every woman whatever age deserves to live a happy, satisfying, and successful life. A life where she feels beautiful, needed, supported, and inspired.

To achieve this vision the Internet provides us with the opportunity to connect and guide you virtually, but we women also want to connect with each other in person. To make this a reality, I will be touring Europe and the US in a few months. So, what are our plans? Let’s have a Cocktail Party Together with fabulous women from different cities in Europe including for instance Monaco & Nice, Paris and Amsterdam & in the US cities like Washington, Tallahassee, Denver, San Francisco, and others I will be hosting Cocktail Parties. These cocktail parties will give you the opportunity to step out of your daily life for a few hours, to get dressed up, to put on make-up, to feel beautiful, confident, ‌ amazing, to feel your very best self and to go and meet other women who feel the same. Together we will all be able to create new connections, lasting friendships, and maybe business opportunities that will be pillars on which we can build our lives and businesses. 24

These parties are about having a good time, enjoying luxurious moments that we can think about and draw on if things are getting tough. Let’s come together and experience magic born out of so many gorgeous and fabulous feeling women coming together in a beautiful place. Let’s enjoy a cocktail (alcoholic & non-alcoholic) while getting to know fascinating women in your city and creating lasting relationships. At the moment we are preparing this Cocktail Party autour du Monde. I will let you know more about the cities, the wonderful ladies who are co-hosting the cocktail parties with me, and much more on the Jeunessima Facebook page www.facebook.com/Jeunessima. And if you would like to get your personal invitation, simply click on this link to send us a quick mail: club@jeunessima.com. I will personally ensure that you will be invited. Also, if you would love to be one of the wonderful co-hosts and organize a cocktail party together with me in YOUR city, or if you know of wonderful companies potentially interested in sponsoring some parties, use the mail above to let me know. And you and I will have a chat to see what we can do together. I am looking forward to meeting you very soon.

Have fun, stay young,

MIND

Smile

FOR A YOUTHFUL APPEARANCE & A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE BY Dr. Ines O’Donovan

27

MIND

O

ne of the more sobering claims to come out of the anti-aging literature has been countered: smiling doesn’t make you look older after all. In fact, the reverse is true: a study has shown that when we smile, our perceived ages instantly drop and we look considerably younger than when our faces are in a neutral or angry expression. We can’t (and won’t) pretend the action of smiling doesn’t create lines, just as frowning does; that is an undeniable effect of muscle movement in the face. But it has now been proved that the age of a person when they are smiling is likely to be underestimated by two to three years. Two to three years drop off your face just because you are smiling? Now that’s something to smile about. So why does the grin make us look younger? Part of it is physical: when we are smiling, no matter if we are young or old, our face will crease around the eyes and cheeks. When a person is mid-smile, it’s hard to gauge whether those lines are permanent or not.

28

MIND

Those who are happy and cheerful have a 35 % reduced risk of premature death.

But it’s not just that: numerous studies have proven that smiling makes us more attractive as well as more confident to others - both qualities that make us look younger. People who smile a lot are also judged by others to be more approachable, likeable, fun-loving and, interestingly, more competent. (So anyone thinking they need to have a serious face on at work appears to be mistaken.) Oh, and one other small thing. Those who are happy and cheerful have a 35 % reduced risk of premature death.

29

MIND

Smilers tend to be happier, more social, and more emotionally stable, all traits that lead to successful relationships

It’s not just the length of your life that is determined by whether you smile a lot, it’s also the length of your marriage. In a fascinating study of school yearbooks, researchers found a strong correlation between unsmiling faces and divorces – the rates are up to 5 times higher than the break up rate of those that had a smile in that single photo many years before. Sounds unbelievable, but when we go back to how we react to people who are smiling - that they are perceived as friendlier, more approachable, fun loving - you realize that smiling is a big part of how we form and sustain relationships. The divorce yearbook study was published in Psychology Today, where they explained that ‘Smilers tend to be happier, more social, and more emotionally stable, all traits that lead to successful relationships.’ Also, being around people who smile a lot feels good. And just in case you don’t believe this, a smile really does feel good - a British study showed that a single smile generates the same activity in the reward sector of our brains as up to 2,000 bars of chocolate!

30

MIND

Smile, and the whole world smiles with you

If we are married to or surrounded by happy people who smile a lot, we will smile more and also reap the benefits - and pass those smiles on to others who cross our paths. This is not because the happy person is funny (sadly, we haven’t all become hilarious), but because a smile is an evolutionary reflex that is actually contagious. It has been proven that it is extremely difficult to frown when we are looking at someone who is smiling - smiling is hardwired into us, we even smile in the womb. Children smile up to 400 times a day which is probably why so many of us love being around children as their happiness rubs off on us! As it turns out, ‘Smile, and the whole world smiles with you’ is not just a line of a Louis Armstrong song. Not only do we smile because we are happy, but we are happy because we smile. The two are inextricably linked, for our brain registers the muscles moving in a smile. So simply moving those muscles signals to our brain that we are happy, and it releases endorphins, the good mood chemicals. This has been proven time and time again - even when the ‘smile’ in question was just chopsticks forcing the cheeks apart in a simulated smile! Which is why we should have a go at fake smiling for a few minutes each time we feel glum; we might feel silly as we grin at our grumpy selves in the mirror, but our brains can’t tell the difference. Who’s silly now? All in all, the risk of a few crows’ feet must certainly be worth it - especially given that it’s the very act that causes them – the smile - that keeps us looking and feeling forever young!

DETOXING FOR HEALTH fact or fiction?

33

BODY

Many scientists believe that detoxes are simply a major scam generated by the health industry

A popular trend nowadays argues that detoxes

understands that eliminating such things can

and cleanses do not work. Many scientists

impact our bodies in a very big way.

believe that detoxes are simply a major scam generated by the health industry, and that our bodies are quite capable of eliminating toxins without our help. However, it is not quite as simple as that health rarely is indeed. These days it can seem like a battleground of rapidly changing opinions. Science may say detoxes have no purposes, yet anyone who has cut out caffeine only to be hit by headaches and grumpiness

There is no question that our bodies are phenomenal detoxing machines. The real debate here is whether we can or cannot give them a helping hand. And the answer is: yes, we can. There is significant evidence that we can aid our bodies to eliminate toxins, and fight disease, low energy and even the signs of aging. Let us have a look at the basics. 34

BODY

Drink water to flush toxins and look younger. Kidneys filter our entire blood supply within 5 minutes, sending unnecessary toxins and waste to our bladders to be secreted. Even the naysayers agree that increasing water intake will increase urinary output and therefore aid the kidneys to flush out toxins. So, drinking more water is vital for the rejuvenation of your body. It will not only help your kidneys, but also fight the dehydration that can play havoc with our brain function and the condition of our skin.

35

BODY

Cut out alcohol and caffeine. Everyone agrees that taking a break from these things is a good idea, even if only temporarily. New research shows that even one alcohol-free day a week gives the liver some time to recover and minimizes chances of cirrhosis, the scarring of liver tissue that eventually prevents the liver from functioning properly. Alcohol and caffeine also disrupt sleep patterns, impeding the body’s ability to repair itself. So yes, taking a break from alcohol and caffeine will help your liver and general health, making you look and feel younger.

Sugar detox. It is not the first time that we talk about sugar. There is no question that eliminating sugar from your diet is a good idea, as it has been linked with cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and a host of other serious diseases. By doing a sugar detox you will break the addictive habit of eating sugar and alter your taste buds, meaning you are less likely to resume a high sugar diet after the detox stage is finished. Sugar, as we said before, is also extremely damaging to your skin as it breaks down collagen, so you will benefit by looking younger as well. 36

BODY

What about juice fasting? Juice fasting claims to bind certain heavy metals and toxins and flush them out of the system. While vegetable juices are packed full of health and youth giving nutrients, the juice and similar drink fasts have not yet been proven to remove specific toxins, so the jury is out on this kind of liquid fasting until more comprehensive testing is done. However, vegetable juices will do you good even if they do not remove toxins, so have them regularly. Go easy on the fruit though as it has extremely high levels of sugar, as do many of these liquid fasts.

37

BODY

Heavy Metal Detox: Heavy metal toxins are everywhere in modern life, and it has been proven that we already have toxins in our bodies in the womb. A 2004 study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found roughly 200 industrial pollutants and chemicals in umbilical cord blood in a group of US babies, including pesticides and wastes from burning coal, garbage and gasoline. Heavy metals are being linked to ailments such as autism, memory loss and fatigue. As well as a diet rich in cilantro, garlic and onions, there are some interesting treatments available, such as chlorella, a blue-green algae that is reported to bind to toxins and heavy metals and flush them out. While this has not been clinically proven at this stage, chlorella is also reported to be good for eyesight and brain health. You might also want to try activated charcoal from coconut shell. Just make sure that you do not take any other nutrients at the same time as they will be flushed out together with the toxins.

38

BODY

What about ‘reset detoxes’? Now we are talking. These kinds of detoxes are a return to simple, healthy diets while cutting out obvious toxins like alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine. Lots of vegetables, lean protein, vegetable juices and some exercise. And of course, plenty of water. This gives your body a chance to ‘reset’ and break its dependent habits. Hopefully, at the end of this detox, you will simply have better eating habits and be able to carry on with them for the most part thereby avoiding the nasty cycle of most detoxes, which involves indulging and then fasting, indulging and fasting… forever. So far, it all just seems like common sense. But is this such a bad thing? Apart from eating well and replacing alcohol and coffee with water, are there any specific types of detoxes or fasts that have been proven to fight disease and aging? Happily, yes.

39

BODY

Low calorie fasting to fight disease.

There is significant scientific evidence that occasional low-calorie intake fasting (200-500 calories per day, consumed over 4 – 6 hours) has a positive effect on all manner of ailments, including rheumatic diseases, chronic pain syndromes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. It also helps with chronic inflammation and degenerative diseases. This so called intermittent fasting has also been shown to aid chemotherapy treatment. Please note that low-calorie fasting is not recommended for long periods of time, and just like any other fast it is important to consult your doctor, ideally a doctor of functional medicine, and follow recommended guidelines.

40

BODY

Eat less to look youthful. Incredibly, low calorie fasting also disrupts the signals of aging, meaning that restricting your calorie intake over long periods of time works to keep your body young. Other detox hints for looking young are getting regular massages to stimulate circulation. For example, saunas and Epsom baths can help the body get rid of impurities. Please note, if you are going to use a sauna, make sure you rehydrate or you will impair the good detoxifying work your kidneys are doing! In short, our medical knowledge changes by the day, and we do not know what health science will look like in 50 years time. For now, do not blindly bankrupt yourself on ‘miracle’ detoxes and we suggest you do your research first. Just do what you already know is going to make you shine everyday: eat well, drink lots of water and take a break from the negative things like alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine. A good diet rather than gimmicks will keep you fit and beautiful.

BEAUTY SECRETS

CLEANSING & REJUVENATION

THE AYURVEDIC WAY In this issue of Jeunessima we have talked you through the worlds of detox, fasting, and other ways to rejuvenate your body. While some of these cleansing practices involve a string of green smoothies and a struggle with stomach cramps or fasting, Ayurvedic Medicine, the Indian Science of Life, offers one of the more intense but extremely effective ways of cleansing and rejuvenation. Purvakarma, followed by Panchakarma and Rasayana, are best done as a 28-day program to eliminate every toxin harbored in your body and mind and to create a new and balanced version of your own self. It is possible to do the program over a shorter period of time but the effect is much higher if you do the longer program. Let’s have a closer look at how this works. 42

BEAUTY SECRETS

Purvakarma Purva in the Sanskrit language means ‘before’, and karma means action or treatment. Purvakarma is used to prepare the body for the cleansing and detoxing process. The two treatments typically employed are snehana and swedana. • Snehana (Oleation) Snehana saturates the body with herbal and medicated oils, inside and outside. Internally the most common substance given is warm herbal ghee (purified butter where milk solids, proteins, and water have been removed) that is drank on an empty stomach. On the outside the primary oil used is sesame oil. This is a very pleasant process as the oil is massaged into the body using very specific strokes meant to support the body’s functions and loosen toxins. • Swedana (Therapeutic Heat) Swedana uses heat, mostly steam baths, in a sweat box where only the head stays outside. The aim here is to dilate the body’s channels and liquidify mucus in the body to support the body’s ability to remove toxins and waste products. 43

BEAUTY SECRETS

Panchakarma In Sanskrit, pancha means five indicating that in this cleansing and detoxing process 5 different treatments can be used. Panchakarma is designed to eliminate the root cause of all diseases. Along with eliminating toxins, panchakarma is beneficial for the body’s tissues, gives the body an opportunity to heal, and leads to a tranquil and peaceful mind. The 5 typical treatments include • Nasya (Therapeutic Cleansing of the Head Region) Nasya (or also called shirovirechana) helps to remove mucus from the throat, nose, sinuses, and other organs in the head and neck area. To do so medicated oils and powders are introduced into the nose to help with issues like sinus congestion, common cold, chronic sinusitis, allergies, migraine, eye and ear problems, and more. 44

BEAUTY SECRETS • Vamana (Therapeutic Vomiting) This treatment targets the mucus build-up in the body and the respiratory tract. While vomiting does not sound very pleasant, this treatment uses herbs such as licorice and randia dymotorum to gently and painlessly and at the same time effectively help with lung problems, allergies, chronic colds, diabetes, arthritis, some skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, and others. Your Ayurvedic doctor will tell you if this is a treatment that he would suggest to you. • Virechana (Purging Therapy) Virechana cleanses the small intestine and organs in the middle of the body like liver and gall bladder. It also removes waste and toxins from the blood. The purging process is induced by herbs that are taken orally. This treatment leads to a downward movement that loosens toxins and stool on its way and helps with issues like haemorrhoids, chronic headaches, some types of diabetes, and eczema. • Basti (Medicated Enemas for Therapeutic Purification and Rejuvenation) Basti is seen as the most powerful of all the 5 panchakarma treatments. Here medicated liquid is introduced into the colon through the rectum. The power of this treatment results not just from the colon on its own but rather from the colon’s vital connection with other organs and tissues of the body. In Ayurveda the colon is often compared with the roots of a tree. It is those roots that provide the nourishment that sustains the body. It is therefore that Basti helps with most issues at least in a supportive role. There are additional ways in which bastis are used. Bastis can also be applied to other places of the body like the eyes, chest and heart area, the back, and more. It is not surprising then that bastis are very popular and pretty much always used in a panchakarma treatment. • Raktamokshana (Therapeutic Blood Withdrawal) This treatment is intended to remove toxins from the blood and is successfully used to treat particular skin issues like chronic itching, eczema, rashes and others. It is also useful for some types of headaches, an enlarged liver or spleen and hypertension. For this treatment it is enough to withdraw a small amount of blood intravenously stimulating the body to create fresh and healthier blood.

Ayurvedic doctors choose from the above practices based on your personal constitution, illnesses, and goals. 45

BEAUTY SECRETS

Once body and mind have been deeply cleansed, the last step is rasayana.

Rasayana Rasayana stems from the Sanskrit words rasa (essence) and ayana (path). Even though it has its own system within the Ayurvedic science, it is highly recommended to use it following Panchakarma as it is then that the body is really able to absorb nutrients and focus on healing. Rasayana is very much focused on rejuvenation. Depending on the goals different types of Rasayana are used. They might for instance be focused on reversing the effects of aging and to enliven the body. Others are meant to increase physical strength and stamina while others again focus on increasing physical vitality and energy. They all enhance spiritual vitality and mental strength. Approaches used are mostly herbal but can also include other rejuvenating practices like hatha yoga, meditations, breathing, massages, and others. Ayurveda, and in particular purvakarma, panchakarmam, and rasayana, is a wonderful way to stay physically, mentally, and emotionally young your whole life long. 46

asting has often been used as a demonstration of a religious devotion or as a sign of protest against specific issues. However, more recently fasting has been proven to provide numerous health benefits, when done right. While “water-only fasting” might be the first thing that popped into your mind, there are various different types of fasting, which are easier to achieve, bring the same benefits and are definitely safer … and more enjoyable. According to a study co-led by Professor Valter Longo of the University of Southern California, adopting a fasting mimicking diet for just 5 days a month can bring about many of the same benefits as longer and stricter fasting. Benefits such as weight loss and a reduced risk for cardiovascular diseases and cancer, along with a regeneration of the immune system by killing older and damaged immune cells and

generating new ones. Professor Longo explained his discovery, saying “It’s about reprogramming the body so it enters a slower aging mode, but also rejuvenating it through stem cell-based regeneration.” So how does it work? On the first day, you consume 1090 calories, which is then reduced to 725 calories from day two to five. After completing the 5 days, you simply go back to your regular eating habits, without any particular restrictions, for the rest of the month. However, if you wish to extend the benefits of the fasting, it is recommended to keep a healthy diet after fasting. As this can be a rather complicated option counting the calories you eat, there are other fasting techniques, which can offer the same

SOUL kind of benefits by simply adjusting your eating pattern, such as intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting does not require you to change what you eat or how much you eat, it only impacts when you eat by scheduling your day with an eating time-frame. Gina Shaw, a Natural Health Consultant, explains that intermittent fasting “allows our amazing self-healing body to do just that, heal itself, by eliminating all the outside hindering factors like food ingestion and digestion. Indeed, after eating, your body goes into a 3 to 5 hour long process to digest and absorb the food. Only after this timespan will the body go into a post-absorptive state, which allows it to get rid of toxins, as well as burning fat; and this is exactly what intermittent fasting does. Daily intermittent fasting, developed by Martin Berkhan is the most popular type of intermittent fasting as it makes fasting become a part of your daily routine. There is only one

principle to follow: have an 8 hours eating period, followed by 16 hours of fasting. Except from that, everything can be adjusted around your preferences: from the frequency of meals during the eating period to the beginning of the eating period. While 16 hours might appear as a long time to go without food, do not forget that for roughly half of that fasting time you will probably be asleep. However, if you have never been on a fast before, you might consider getting over the mental barrier of fasting beforehand. This can be done with a weekly intermittent fast, which consist of a 24-hour fast once a week. Achieving this fast will allow you to overcome this fear of going an entire day without food, while also providing the same kind of health benefits as other fasts, except for the weight loss. Whichever option you prefer, it is always a good idea to speak with your doctor before going on a fast to see what works best for you.

JEUNESSIMA NEWS Fasting can be hard, very hard. And it is often not a lot of fun despite all the health benefits it brings with it. A great area of interest now is intermittent fasting as that seems to have a lot of the same effects and is significantly easier to do. Valter Longo tested an intermittent fasting diet where the study participants reduced their caloric intake to 34 to 54% of the normal intake for 5 days in a row and repeated that once a month for 3 months. What they found was that risk factors and biomarkers for aging, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer were decreased without major adverse side effects.
