OVER THE COURSE OF 265 YEARS, TRADITIONS HAVE CREATED CONNECTIONS THROUGH THE SCHOOL AND BEYOND

BY THE NUMBERS

WE CHERISH

Tradition is passed on from one generation to the next, fostering a deep sense of community at belonging, especially at GA. From Flag Raising and singing of the alma mater, to GA/PC Day and gifting of class stones, important rituals are shared among students and alumni to celebrate our history which create lasting memories and connections that bind us together throughout the years.

Dear Friends,

One of the true highlights of every GA graduation (beyond my own joy at getting to bellow out each graduate’s name so that it reverberates around Connor Quad) is the tried-and-true tradition of the just-anointed-alums greeting every PreK-12 faculty member as they encircle Connor Quad, sharing memories, hugs, and words of congratulations and gratitude. For many, that hug marks the continuation of a mentorship and the beginning of a friendship that lasts a lifetime.

I was poignantly reminded of these unforgettable connections at the funeral celebrating the life of GA legend Mr. Edwin Nightingale Probert II, Class of 1760. A rare member of the 40+ years of service club, Edwin’s undeniable impact was so clearly evinced by the alumni/ae and faculty from four decades who were present, read, and served as pallbearers on a beautiful Labor Day Weekend Saturday morning. Many others shared fond reminiscences of Edwin’s remarkable impact on social media and through gifts in his honor to the Belfry Club. There was no doubt that the feeling was mutual. When I saw that Edwin had chosen to include the GA logo on his tombstone (with an etched icon of his signature bow tie beneath it), it took my breath away. Edwin was an eternal Patriot, a remarkable teacher, and a dedicated, wonderfully unique soul.

This year presents the perfect opportunity for Patriots from near and far to come back home to GA, to reconnect with teachers and classmates, and to make sure not another year passes before you get a hug, share a story, or just say thanks. We will be hosting the 138th GA/PC Day here at home on November 9, and it wouldn’t be the same without you.

GA is always better because of you. Please be in touch.

GA CHANGEMAKERS INSTITUTE: CREATING UNIQUE SOLUTIONS TO TODAY'S ISSUES

Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760, Head of Middle School Jonas Jeswald, and Innovation

Consultant Gabrielle Russomagno 1760 were proud to present an inaugural opportunity for Middle and Upper School students in June - the GA Changemakers Institute. The mission is to provide students with meaningful exposure to the topics, leadership strategies, and collaborative problem-solving skills necessary to fulfill GA’s broader mission and to prepare them to thrive not just in college but in their careers and lives.

Selected students were invited to create solutions to current issues facing the school, region, country, or world using this question – “Using design thinking and leadership principles,

devise a thoughtful, creative strategy to combat the escalating mental health crisis affecting teenagers today.” After reading excerpts from Jonathan Haidt’s compelling new book: The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness and completing a personal leadership style inventory, students then, individually or in pairs, were able to ‘design think’ and ultimately present their own unique solution to the question of the day.

Solutions included creating opportunities for confidence-building and finding activities that are passion-based and inherently noncompetitive. Feedback Feedback from the 60+ students who participated in the enga ging activity was positive, ensuring that the next institute will already have an interested group at the

CLASS OF 2024

Germantown Academy welcomed the remarkable Class of 2024 into the school’s storied alumni body during a picture-perfect ceremony on June 14 on Connor Quad.

Before Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760 and Board of Trustees President Michael H. Jordan P’19 ’21 ’23 presented the diplomas, students, parents, and extended family members were moved by speakers Angie Wang ’24 and Andrei Vava ’24, as well as Upper School Physics Teacher Vic Montemayor.

Senior Class Representatives to the Student Government Association — Alex Brereton, Emma Goodwin, and Mario Toscano — proudly presented the class stone designed by Sophie Goodridge.

During the ceremony, Claire Durkin and Blake Brown were awarded Beard Memorial Awards for fostering the spirit, cherishing the tradition, and promoting the interest of the Academy.

Colin Rink, Ethan Page, Tati King, and Lucy Fassler were each presented with a Head of School Prize, which is awarded to students of the graduating class who, while at Germantown Academy, have made the best use of their talents.

Class President Luke Philip, the 2023-24 and Emma Goodwin received Nahill Memorial Medals, established in 1964 by the Class of 1960 in memory of their President, George Gregory Nahill. The award is given to those in the senior class who, by vote of the class, have done the most to further class unity.

Isabella Casey received the Academy Wooden Spoon Award. In the 19th century, GA seniors gathered for a class dinner at which they regaled each other with speeches, songs, and jokes. Prizes were awarded for academic excellence, and one lucky student received a large wooden spoon. The spoon was a special prize awarded to the senior who did the most to “nourish” other students through kindness and character. In 2022, the Academy reinstated this award once again to acknowledge one senior’s kindness and character.

The induction of new members to the honorary alumni Class of 1760 is also an annual highlight. Alumni Society Board President Claire Ragusa MacRae ’84 P’26 announced that honorary alumni inductees include Middle School English Teacher Sara Goodwin P’22 ’24, Upper School Science Teacher and Head Girls Crew Coach Dick O’Hern, and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees Janet Haugen P’17.

Forever Patriots

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMENT!

Quotes below are provided by a grateful Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760.

CAROL D. PEERY AYERS 1760, 26 YEARS

“Carol Ayers is a legend, an icon, a role model, and an inspiration. One of the best language teachers I have ever seen in action, Carol has always been committed to immersing her students linguistically and culturally into the Spanish-speaking world. Whether in Spanish 1 or AP Spanish Literature, Carol’s students benefited tremendously from her enthusiasm and expertise; she helped well over 1,000 Patriots become functionally fluent Spanish speakers during her 26-year tenure. Both our esteemed Spanish Honor Society and intensive exchange with the Europa International School in Seville exist only thanks to Carol’s incredible dedication and desire to expand our students’ connections around the globe. On the DEI front, Carol has been a constant leader and changemaker in the most important ways, serving as a lifeline for hundreds, and bravely stepping forward to amplify student and faculty voices and representation. Her impact on life at the Academy is unbelievably deep, and her legacy must inspire each of us to continue her vital work.”

SUE NEGRO 1760, 25 YEARS

“Love. Connection. Creativity. Reliability. Adaptability. Strength. Nurture. Dynamism. Adventure. Optimism. These are just a few of the words that come to my mind when I think about legendary Sue Negro. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that I feel like my life would have been supremely better had I had the gift of having Sue as a math teacher, because I have seen first-hand how many lives she has changed by being the consummate teacher and advisor. So many of us think of her as Mama Negro because she leads with love, empathy, kindness, and the proper spoonful of discipline when we need it most (followed by a hug). Dozens of seniors every year have her atop their college recommendation list because they know how well she knows them, cares about them, and will advocate for them. A remarkably adept math teacher at any level, Sue never gives up on any student, and she helps each one discover their best math selves, even (or especially) if they define themselves as staunchly antimath. Beyond her stellar work as a teacher and advisor, Sue has initiated and led a string of important initiatives during her tenure at GA – far too many to list here. Whatever the task, I have always had complete faith that, with Sue in charge, it wouldn’t just get done right, it would exceed expectations. That’s who she is – a human who constantly exceeds our expectations, who makes her classroom a home, and who makes every individual she encounters feel that much better about themselves thanks to her unyielding faith in our ability to grow and thrive. Simply put, I can’t imagine GA without her, but I am so happy for her and her family that she will take all the love and energy she has shared with us for so long with them.”

K. RICHARDSON, 22 YEARS

“In nearly three decades of work in independent schools, I have seen MANY high school theatrical productions at many schools; without a doubt, all of my top 10 have been directed by the gifted K. Richardson. K. is brilliant at casting, at finding just the right show for the kids fortunate enough to work with her, at pushing the envelope so that the stage becomes an outstanding classroom and learning experience, and at challenging her audiences to reconsider what high school theater can be and can mean for the students and the audience. From the biggest musical production numbers to the most intimate play dialogues, K. brings out the best in her actors and leads the spectators on unforgettable journeys. It remains abundantly clear why her shows have won so many accolades and why so many Belfry alums once under her tutelage have gone on to lead lives on and behind the stage, both in college and professionally. A huge GA standing ovation has been earned by K. Richardson!”

PAT TEREFENKO, 24 YEARS

“Pat Terefenko is absolutely one of the very best, most impactful Patriots, and yet most people wouldn’t recognize her – and that’s how she prefers it. Our amazing accountant for 24 years skillfully manages every dollar and cent of GA’s annual $40M+ budget like the wizard behind the curtain of our very real Oz, and she does so with a profound work ethic, an unyielding attention to detail, and genuine humility and kindness. Year after year, Pat’s scrupulous service to our school has resulted in perfect audits, outstanding budget management, and caring, hands-on administration of the day-to-day operations of the Business Office. Her dedication to GA is more impressive than even the best-kept ledger, her legacy farther reaching than the longest spreadsheet.”

RINGING OF THE BELL: A SYMBOL OF SCHOOL PRIDE

THEN: The bell at Germantown Academy has long been a defining feature of daily life with its history stretching back to 1774 when it was cast in England and brought over on the tea ship Polly. Due to unrest in Philadelphia at the time, the Polly was forced to return to England with its cargo, and it was not until 1784 that the bell finally arrived and was placed in the bell tower. First rung in the early 19th century to signal the start of the school day, the bell quickly became integral to the school’s routine.

By the 1830s, its frequent use had caused significant wear, requiring it to be recast—a testament to its enduring role in the school’s culture.

NOW: On the Fort Washington campus, the bell plays a ceremonial role, ringing at flag raisings, graduations, and in celebration of athletic championships. It connects today’s students to the school’s historic past, ringing out the same chimes that once marked the school days of countless Germantown students.

The Girls Cross Country team rang the bell in 2013 in honor of their Inter-Ac League championship.

Traditions serve as the foundation of Germantown Academy’s rich history, preserving its legacy while connecting the past with the present. As the Academy celebrates its centuries-long heritage, several key rituals continue to define the school’s character.

ARCHITECTURE: A REFLECTION OF GA’S ORIGINS

THEN: Following GA’s founding in 1759, Dr. Charles Bensell, a prominent Germantown landowner and trustee, generously donated the land that would become the Academy’s first campus. The cornerstone of this campus was the iconic schoolhouse, crafted in the colonial style with a belfry standing tall above its Wissahickon schist walls. This stone and the colonial design were emblematic of both the time and the place, creating a visual connection to the region’s history.

NOW: The move to Fort Washington in 1965 was met with mixed emotions. For many families rooted in Germantown, GA was more than just a school—it was part of the neighborhood’s soul. The original schoolhouse had stood as a symbol of continuity for generations. To preserve this connection, the architecture of the new Fort Washington campus was deliberately designed to echo the original, with the use of Wissahickon schist for the walls serving as a respectful nod to GA’s past. This thoughtful continuum made the transition easier for those who held the Germantown campus dear, ensuring that the essence of GA’s history lives on in its modern-day home.

Class of 2024 Graduation handshake line.

FLAG RAISING: WELCOMING A NEW YEAR

THEN: The tradition of raising the flag dates to at least the time of the school’s move to Fort Washington. However, the earliest recorded instance of GA flying a flag comes from 1860, when the Academy purchased a new flag as a display of patriotism during the Civil War.

NOW: Each new school year officially begins when the Flag Raising ceremony has been completed. As per tradition, all students, faculty members, staff, and administration gather on

HANDSHAKE LINE: A GOODBYE OF GRATITUDE

THEN: The tradition of the Handshake Line was introduced during the tenure of Head of School Jim Connor 1760. It quickly became a hallmark of GA’s graduation ceremony, allowing graduates to express their gratitude to teachers who have guided and supported them along their educational journey. Teachers, in turn, use the opportunity to offer well wishes as the graduates embark on the next chapter of their lives.

NOW: The Handshake Line remains a meaningful and cherished conclusion to a students’ journey through GA. Held on Connor Quad, faculty members from the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools line up to shake the hand or give a hug. For Casey Traina ’22, this tradition allowed him to reunite with a personal item that Kurt Wetzel ’88 confiscated in Middle School and told him it would be returned when he graduated. This personal and symbolic gesture reflects the deep connections formed at GA.

Connor Quad by the main flagpole. After announcements for the year, and a retelling of our proud school history, the senior class sings the Alma Mater while a special American Flag, bearing thirteen stars, is raised above the GA school flag where they will fly each day of the school year. All are dismissed for the start of the day’s first class by the toll of our historic bell. For Lifers, this tradition holds deep meaning, but also serves to welcome new members of the community, introducing them to the school’s culture, history, and values.

GERMANTOWN ACADEMY

WELCOME (BACK) DAVE SAMSON,

What are you most excited about in your return to GA?

I’m thrilled to be working with GA students again; they truly live our mission. I love working at a place where the kids care just as deeply about their school as the faculty. It is also an incredible pleasure working with our faculty. They are scholars in their field and genuinely know their students. Our faculty also wants to grow and learn alongside their students, creating an exciting and engaging day.

What are some of the academic programs that you were eager to inherit?

I’m excited that computer science has more scope and sequence than when I was here before. I’m also passionate about the electives

?

HEAD OF UPPER SCHOOL!

we offer for seniors, ranging from astronomy to personal finance to psychology to organic chemistry. Our students have some great choices.

How do you envision the younger teachers and seasoned faculty working together?

It’s been great to see some of our newer faculty members already take on leadership positions as department chairs and House Heads. I have also enjoyed seeing seasoned GA faculty working with newer GA faculty in clubs and extracurricular activities, like with Community Service Organization, Senior Projects, Student Government, and other initiatives.

Student engagement is a key component of GA’s Strategic Vision. What do you feel makes us strong in that area?

Choice and access! Students have a wide variety of choices, both curricular and extracurricular. We have 28 varsity sports teams (42 including JV), more than 80 student-led clubs, and amazing theater and choral programs. Access to the outdoors is a great addition to the school day for all students. The photography class is spending time outside this fall, and Marine Biology is headed to the beach for a field trip soon. I also think being so close to Philadelphia is something we can’t take for granted.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS...

PATRICK DAVID 1760

Mon dieu! While he hasn’t moved very far from GA, Upper School French Teacher Patrick David 1760 has been quite busy since his retirement from GA in 2016. Not only is he enjoying life as a parent and grandparent, he continues to play soccer, interact with many alumni, and trek through Europe.

"Since I retired, I have found a new love, pickleball. It's an extremely popular sport, which brings together people from all levels and ages. I usually play a couple of hours a day, often with alumni Kent Griswold ’76, Bob Cannon ’76, or Bob Leininger ’83.

Wednesday night Alumni soccer at GA has been a long-time tradition, where some of us have been playing together for 40 years. Old timers Richard ’74 and David ’74 Binswanger, Josh Muskin ’75, along with younger generations Alex Haynie ’04, Kurt ’88, Erich ’90, and Hans ’03 Wetzel to name a few. It sometimes looks like a slow motion game, but the love is there. I also meet for special soccer occasions with former players. Voltaire Escalona ’10 is usually the one who brings us together.

I have been involved these past few years as a French and Spanish translator and interpreter with the IEP, a program which supports students with special needs. I also help as a judge at the Montgomery County foreign language speaking contest, I tutor children of former students, and even coached soccer for a couple of years at a local high

school with my son as the assistant coach. That was very special. I also frequently visit the local library to read or to take out movies.

I had the opportunity to travel this summer to eight European countries, watch two Euro soccer games in Stuttgart and Berlin, and had a wonderful stay with friends in Barcelona, before visiting family in France. Unfortunately, we did not make it to Paris for the Olympics.

In November, my former professional soccer team, Montpellier is celebrating its 50th anniversary and I have been invited to the celebration as a former player. That should be exciting."

CAMPAIGN NEWS

CONTINUING GA TRADITIONS THROUGH COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Germantown Academy’s cherished traditions play a vital role in its 265-year history by uniting generations of Patriots and fostering a sense of belonging and community. Shared experiences across decades are part of what makes GA extraordinary.

One significant tradition that has maintained and supported the continued growth of GA is the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends. GA was founded and rooted in community support, a critical foundation important to us as an independent school. As school administration carefully identifies fundraising priorities that are in the best interest of GA’s overall sustainability and growth each year, we have been able to complete several ambitious efforts due to a longstanding tradition of giving back.

Currently, the Our Moment campaign, which began in the fall of 2021, has a goal of increasing our endowment by $16 million. As one of GA’s oldest and most important financial assets, and primarily funded through philanthropy, the endowment ensures the school’s long-term fiscal health. Our endowment provides the resources, in perpetuity, that allow GA to invest in top-tier faculty and expand funded financial aid, two priorities that have created and upheld our school’s tradition of excellence.

As part of the Our Moment campaign, more than 200 alumni, parents of alumni, current parents, and friends heard our request and were inspired to support our school by contributing to the endowment. To date, $13.3 million has been committed to increasing our endowment, and numerous funds have been created that will support generations of students and educators to come.

In one inspiring example, the Robert McLean and Jenepher and Edward J. Kelly, Jr. Foundation generously established three new financial aid endowment funds. Former GA Board member Robert McLean 1760, who donated the tract of land in 1958 that would later become our school’s Fort Washington campus, was honored by the foundation with the creation of the Robert and Clare McLean 1760 Scholarship Fund, which provides tuition support with preference to a student who embodies an aptitude for persuasive debate and excellence in written communications, and an aspiration to pursue journalism – academic areas that were particularly meaningful to Mr. McLean.

For more information about the many ways you and your family can support the GA endowment, and the Our Moment campaign, please contact Brooke Record, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 267.405.7212 or brooke.record@germantownacademy.org.

Michael and Widgette Kelly P’25, ’27, recently met with Head of School, Rich Schellhas 1760 (pictured right to left). The Kellys are representatives of the Robert McLean and Jenepher and Edward J. Kelly, Jr. Foundation. During their visit, they were reunited with a portrait of Michael’s grandfather, Robert McLean. Mr. McLean, the noted journalist and publisher of the Philadelphia Bulletin, donated the land in Fort Washington where our beautiful campus now sits and is the namesake of Lower School’s McLean Hall.

Between the writing and art categories, Bagchi was selected from 110,000 entrants for this year’s contest, the nation’s longest running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for young artists and writers in grades 7-12.

Fifteen sophomores from GA’s sister school Capital Normal University High School in Beijing experienced American education and culture through GA’s Curriculum Partnership Program with a trip to the U.S. The program, which includes taking courses taught in English and passing AP classes, highlighted the differences in educational approaches, with CNU students noting the balance between academics and extracurriculars at GA. Special thanks to our GA host families for their support.

BUILDING LIFELONG CONNECTIONS ACROSS BORDERS

For many students, the relationships they forge with exchange students become some of their most meaningful school experiences. In the 60+ years GA has offered this program, our visitors became integral parts of the community, forging friendships and bonds with classmates that last far beyond their time on campus.

GA’s tradition in hosting exchange students began during the 1962-63 school year with the American Field Service (AFS) program when the school welcomed Sedat Ozmen from Turkey. "From Sedat, GA’s first foreign exchange student, we have learned the most enjoyable qualities of human nature,” the Ye Primer staff wrote. “Notably a sparkling sense of humor, and to know no political or geographical boundaries.”

The next year, GA’s Class of 1964 welcomed Fabian Izurieta, hosted by Myles Krieger ’64 and his family, who stayed his full senior year and participated in numerous activities. In addition to playing on the soccer pitch with his hostbrother, Fabian also played tennis and was involved in Belfry Club, Philomathean Society, and World Affairs Council. The latter two experiences prepared Fabian for his leadership roles in Ecuador and as the Ecuadorian representative to the United Nations.

“GA’s second representative from the AFS and its first student from South America, Fabian has made himself popular among all seniors, and indeed, among the entire school,” his senior profile in the Ye Primer reported.

Despite the new and unfamiliar environment that exchange students experience when they arrive, through shared experiences - whether in the classroom, on sports teams, or through clubs and activities - they quickly build strong connections with their fellow Patriots.

“An exchange experience is life changing,” Karen Wilson Lobb ’82, an exchange student from Australia, shared. “I can’t think about it without feeling deeply grateful for the opportunity. It was a huge ask for Amy [Muskin Shelton '82] to share her senior year with a ring-in. That her group of friends, who had been together for most, if not all, of their GA years, were also so welcoming and generous was a gift.”

Students who open their lives to exchange students often find themselves transformed as well. “Despite the tough decision at first of having to share my bedroom with someone, it turned out to be one of my life’s most enriching experiences,” Krieger stated with conviction. “There are so many memories of our time in senior year and in our continued relationship 60 years later.” To their joint delight, Izurieta will be traveling back to Fort Washington in November for the Class of 1964 reunion.

Friendships that began in Upper School continue to offer unique opportunities to reconnect with their exchange student friends as they travel abroad, opening doors to new experiences in different countries. Muskin Shelton had never been to Australia. “We all started wistfully talking about a trip to visit Karen together,” classmate Jennifer Harmon Sekerka ’82 remembers. “We decided that since we all had a milestone birthday coming up, why not take a trip to visit Karen together in lieu of having parties. We visited Karen’s hometown of Newcastle, then Sydney, Uluru, and Cairns. Partway through the trip, husbands joined in the fun.”

The programs have evolved over time from the year-long exchanges in the early days. The current structure now varies from hosting Chinese students for a two-week visit, to hosting, and then visiting abroad with Spanish students for five-week visits. GA’s commitment to fostering experiences like this for students and their families has not wavered. No matter the length of the stay, by fostering these connections, GA has not only opened doors for exchange students but also given alumni a priceless gift - friendships that bridge cultures, continents, and years.

Class of ’82 alumni - Amy Muskin Shelton, Kim Beardwood Smith, Beth Anderson Califano, and Jennifer Harmon Sekerka - visited Karen Wilson Lobb in June 2024.

Endowed Financial Aid Funds

BY THE NUMBERS

Endowed financial aid funds are an important part of GA’s total tuition support resources. These funds are invested within the school’s overall endowment. The annual distribution from these funds goes directly towards supporting students in need of financial assistance, helping to ensure that the brightest and most talented students are able to attend GA.

These unique funds were created by school community members, many in honor or memory of alumni, teachers, and family members. They are meant to recognize the many commendable qualities of GA students, such as leadership, school engagement, academic excellence, and extracurricular achievements. Eligible recipients are selected based on their student profile and each fund’s distinct description.

25 new endowed financial aid funds HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED SINCE THE START OF THE OUR MOMENT CAMPAIGN.

The Mulroy Family, Diana (Shank) ’88, Michael, and Walter ’26, has made a particularly thoughtful commitment to the Our Moment campaign, with the goal of making a meaningful impact on GA’s growing endowment. With a desire to establish a new fund in their family’s name, they took a creative approach, working together with the Office of Institutional Advancement. They made their initial contribution, which will be bolstered by an additional planned gift designated in their estate plans, to establish The Mulroy Family Endowed Scholarship Fund.

“It’s deeply gratifying to know that students and teachers will be supported not only today but for generations to come. The school has already invested these funds, ensuring immediate impact, with the promise of continued growth for the future. We are proud to leave this legacy to an institution that has meant so much to our family. Initially, we weren’t sure how we could make such a significant contribution, but after some thoughtful discussion and planning, this truly became ‘our moment’ to help strengthen GA’s endowment for Financial Aid.”

I have been so inspired by the growth of this program. From my vantage point I can see the impact, each year, being made upon really talented and engaged students who benefit from this support. We have said for so long, participating in this program is easy and meaningful. Well, this year I took the next step and became a member of Friends of Education LLC myself!

Reunion 2023

Hundreds of alumni, along with their families and friends, cheered on our Patriots at GA/PC Day and members of the classes ending in 3 and 8 celebrated their reunions over alumni weekend November 9-11, 2023. Class parties brought back together old friends, and each gathering underscored an appreciation for and shared connection to a GA experience.

Several classes participated in unique fundraising initiatives and their successes were driven by dedicated class representatives and volunteers. The Class of 1973 commemorated their 50th reunion celebration by establishing a new endowed scholarship fund, inspiring similar efforts for other classes to follow their example.

In heartfelt tributes to cherished classmates who are no longer with us, the fundraising efforts from the Classes of 1988 and 2013 highlighted the special bond of our GA community. The overwhelming support and personal messages, memories and anecdotes emphasized the profound connection and shared commitment to our school.

The overall fundraising efforts from reunion classes exceeded expectations and achieved record-breaking numbers across the board at 25% participation from over 230 donors. We are grateful to our reunion committees, volunteers, donors, and advocates for driving the success of reunion giving. We hope to keep the tradition of philanthropy going for the next reunion classes!

Martha Sheble Agate, proud member of the Class of 1977, has made a gift to GA’s Annual Fund every year for over three decades! Her steadfast loyalty is an incredible testament to her family’s legacy as well as her dedication to her classmates and alma mater.

As a third-generation alumna, my history at GA is a long and proud one. I am one of four Sheble girls, all enrolled at the same time. I’m sure it was a challenge for our teachers keeping us all straight, but they did, and we were each supported for our different strengths. I was very lucky to be part of a cohesive class, growing up together, facing the challenges that come with it, and remaining to this day (as we approach our 50th Reunion!) a great group of people celebrating a whole new phase of life! For these reasons and more, I include GA in my giving every year.

– Martha Sheble Agate ’77

We honor and thank Martha, and all of GA’s devoted donors, by noting consecutive giving alongside donor names.

Loyal donors are the foundation on which GA’s Annual Fund continues to grow and make an even greater impact on the Academy, year after year. Thank You!

Thanks to the generosity of over 130 GA community members, last September we officially cut the ribbon and opened the doors of our new Health & Wellness Center. This centrally located facility has quickly become a campus hub for our students. A twolevel building, spanning more than 25,000 sq. ft, is now the home to our Health Services Suite, Athletics Department, Jordan Center (a 6,000 sq. ft. fitness and strength training facility), two multipurpose wellness rooms, and the Patriot Café. The Health & Wellness Center, a capital project of the Our Moment campaign, has become exactly what we envisioned—a dedicated space that supports the physical, social, and mental wellbeing of our entire community, as well as a representation of GA’s commitment to prioritizing the vital connection between a healthy mind and healthy body.

In its first year, the Health & Wellness Center served as the perfect space for Middle and Upper School physical education classes, athletic team workouts, PreK movement classes, 3rd grade dance classes, and for the first time, opportunities for our entire school community (including our parents and alumni) to utilize our new fitness center as well as a variety of mindfulness and yoga classes. We look forward to enhancing and expanding these opportunities in the years to come.

The new Hall of Athletic Achievement had its official dedication in April 2024. This extraordinary space celebrates the proud history of GA Athletics. Digital displays and illustrated story boards highlight our school’s rich athletic legacy, as well as leave room for the highlights of future Patriot athletes. A unique feature within this space is the new Patriot Logo Wall, which has become a lasting way for our athletes and their families to permanently commemorate their connection to GA athletics.

For more information about this special naming opportunity contact Sarah Mirabile in the Office of

On National Teacher Appreciation Day, Germantown Academy’s community came together for our second annual Giving Day.

This special day was a resounding success and a celebration of GA’s incredible teachers. More than 450 generous donors honored over 150 GA teachers, both past and present, and raised more than $250,000 for the Annual Fund. The outpouring of support highlights the deep gratitude our community feels for the educators at the heart of our school.

Donors shared their inspiration for participating in Giving Day!

“The teachers, year after year, they amaze me with how original and awesome and attentive they are!”

– CURRENT PARENT

“So many of the wonderful faculty and staff go unrecognized. GA teachers have provided an outstanding education and learning experience for our daughter.”

– CURRENT PARENT AND ALUMNUS

“Grateful for my many lifelong friendships and all I learned in the classroom and on the playing field.”

Diane Goldstein 1760 earned her Compostela Certificate by completing the Camino Primitivo pilgrimage in Spain! The trip included 200 miles (320 km), 2 brothers, 13 days of hiking with backpacks, new friends, and lots of physical and spiritual challenges. “So many memories!” she reflected.

Carol Peery Ayers 1760 and her husband, Randy, were overjoyed to attend the weddings of both their sons in 2024. Cameron Ayers ’10 married Lauren in Nashville, TN on May 25. Later, Ryan Ayers ’05 and his new bride, Allison, were wed on July 25, 2024 in Cancun, where they celebrated with a whole host of his GA classmates.

1970s

“I have published my first children’s book,” shared Danielle de Julio Ashbridge ’73. “It has been a dream of mine since I was at GA. My book is Sugar Monkey and the Golden Fruit. I am working with the Richmond SPCA to donate a percentage to their wonderful program.”

1980s

William Patterson ’74 published a collection of 20 short stories about lessons he learned in life. Titled Ain’t No Pockets in Your Last Pair of Pants, Patterson said he authored the book because he wanted to help his children and grandchildren learn from his insights.

Joe Trainer ’86, now the head coach for Women’s Flag Football at Immaculata University, led the Mighty Macs to the inaugural Atlantic East Conference Women’s Flag Football Championships in April. This was the first-ever women’s flag football championship tournament held by an NCAA Conference. Trainer’s team finished as the Atlantic East Conference Runner-up in 2024.

1990s

Joanna Owens ’27, daughter of Diana Caramanico ’97, and Tommy Pasquarella ’28, son of Jim Pasquarella ’98, are teammates on GA’s football team. Diana and Jim are particularly enjoying it since they played water polo together in 1996-97.

Tyler Fenwick ’99 finished his 6th season as Associate Head Swimming Coach at the University of Virginia, where the women’s team won their thirdstraight NCAA Championship in March. UVA also had four swimmers take home 12 medals for Team USA at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. His wife, Hayley, owns a beauty business in Charlottesville, and they are loving life with their daughters, Harper Sky (3) and Brooklyn Rain (1).

Exciting news for Dave “Hoag” Kepner ’99, as the rights to “Torched - The Story of The Austin Torch,” a documentary he directed, was released in August. CLASS OF 1987

JIM SNYDER, Ph.D.: SNYDER SAYS...

Meet Jim Snyder ’87, Ph.D., Director of Community Engagement and Marketing at Quality Matters in Portland, where he lives with his wife and two children. Jim is a lifelong learner, passionate advocate for the accessibility of quality education, and has been committed to the education sector professionally for more than 20 years.

DR. SNYDER ON HIS PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND… You can trace my path all the way back to GA, as my love of education and constant learning was inspired by my experiences starting in 4th Grade. I earned degrees in physics and math from Kenyon College and a master’s degree in physics at the University of Oklahoma. I then moved to Oregon, met my wife, and earned an MBA from Portland State University. I decided to broaden my career and worked in various banking software roles, including for Nokia in Finland. After the dot-com bubble burst, I returned to my passion and earned a doctorate in education.

REFLECTING ON HIS STUDENT EXPERIENCES AT GA… I was amazed by all the different courses and extracurricular work I was able to pursue simultaneously at GA. I was immersed in a diverse array of activities, from honors courses in Spanish, calculus, and physics to playing the French horn, soccer, and running track, all while developing a deep love for education and the liberal arts. GA’s emphasis on balance and time management shaped my journey. Both of my parents were teachers, and with a family deeply rooted in education, GA reinforced the belief that education is invaluable and set me on a path of lifelong learning.

SPEAKING TO HIS INSPIRATION AND WHAT DRIVES HIM TODAY… I love what I do. At Quality Matters, I’ve learned that success isn’t only about profit - it’s about making a difference. GA taught me the value of being mission-driven. We’re committed to helping non-traditional students - those balancing families or careers - access high-quality education.

ADVICE FOR CURRENT GA STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES… Say yes! Embrace every opportunity that comes your way, especially the ones that make you uncomfortable. Growth happens in those moments of discomfort - when you’re vulnerable, you learn the most. It’s like sitting around the Harkness table at GA, where you cannot hide from tough discussions. Getting comfortable with vulnerability is one of the greatest lessons. It pushes you to grow and opens doors to new possibilities.

DR. SNYDER ON LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE FIELD… Playing soccer at GA instilled lessons that have stayed with me throughout life. A powerful reminder that even in the face of defeat, teamwork and determination can lead to success. I often recall the 100th anniversary of GA/PC weekend in 1986 when our team was down 3-0 at halftime but turned around to win 5-3. Whether on the field or in the classroom, being challenged by coaches who were also my teachers - Coach Wilson Oelkers 1760 - showed me the importance of resilience. I still play soccer, and the friendships and teamwork I experience on the field are a powerful metaphor for life and work. Lead from wherever you are.

As part of the Our Moment campaign to strengthen the GA endowment, the Dr. James P. Snyder ’87 Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 by Gretchen and Geoff Jackson ’87 P'26 '27 to honor Jim’s positive attitude, leadership qualities, quest for academic achievement, and athletic excellence. The inaugural student recipient was named for the current 2024-25 academic year.

Josephine Pizzino ’15 earned her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Delaware Valley University.

Shira Wein ’15 graduated with her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Georgetown University in May 2024. She has since started her new role as Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Amherst College.

AJA CARTER, Ph.D.: A LIFELONG DREAM OF EXPLORING

Paleontology to Robotics is not a conventional career path, but if you’re Aja Carter ’10, Ph.D., your pathway has been anything but. When an opportunity to volunteer at The Academy of Natural Sciences at the age of 13 (with help from 2010 classmate Lauren Johnson’s mom!) presented itself, Carter realized that her love of dinosaurs could become her calling. But what cemented her academic focus was an AP Biology class taught by Upper School Teacher Becky Pizzino 1760 where she had an opportunity to work with fossils.

Carter earned her undergrad degree in biology at Drexel University and then finished her Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania - the first Black woman to receive a Ph.D. in that department. “It’s one of the oldest environmental sciences departments in the country so it was a real achievement for me,” Carter stated. She was also the Vice Provost of Academic Diversity Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research took an interesting detour, and Carter is now completing her second postdoc at Carnegie Mellon University in the Mechanical Engineering Department, and her homelab is the Robomechanics Lab.

“While studying dinosaurs, I became fascinated by the way they walked,” Carter explained. “To answer my questions in paleontology, I had to become an engineer. I would see these photos of the ‘earth through time’ in books and would want to know how some of these creatures, who were only a foot and half tall, got around giant fallen trees. I became interested specifically in dinosaur spines and wondered how they worked and realized I needed robotic models. It just so happens that roboticists are some of the best physical modelers I can think of, so I decided to become one also.”

And it all started at GA. “My senior project was also at the Academy of Natural Sciences where I worked on this large dinosaur and met the most helpful collaborators, some of whom I continue to work with,” said Carter. “GA was so essential to my path.”

Preparation is key to building a career in the sciences, and GA helped prepare Carter in remarkable ways.

“You know how in our schedule you have ‘frees’? That was HUGE,” Carter continued. “Learning how to manage my time, with all my requirements in high school, my homework, projects, tests, is what prepared me for college. I went to this workshop in college (regarding time management) and I said ‘I already know this. I’ve been doing it for years!’ Also, people are always impressed with how much and how quickly I can read. That goes back to my English classes at GA, especially Ms. Burnett’s class."

In addition to the amazing research that she is conducting, Carter is also a celebrity! You can see her in a National Geographic special called, “Secrets of the Dinosaurs: The Real Jurassic Americas | Drain the Oceans,” on YouTube.

REMEMBERING A GA LEGEND: EDWIN N. PROBERT

Edwin N. Probert, II 1760 (June 5, 1941 – August 22, 2024) was a cherished member of the Germantown Academy community, whose life and career were marked by a profound love of learning and who had an enduring impact on all who knew him. With a passion for education that spanned decades, Probert’s influence as a teacher, mentor, and friend will continue to resonate for generations.

Probert began his distinguished career in education in Southern Delaware before joining the Germantown Academy faculty in 1967, where he would remain until his retirement in 2010. A scholar at heart, he earned his master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999 and studied art history at Madingley Hall at the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education. At GA, he made his mark as an inspiring teacher of English writing and literature and as the Belfry Director and school archivist. His dedication to the arts was especially evident in his leadership of the school’s drama program, which grew under his guidance to include three annual productions, including a classic play and musical.

Beyond the classroom, Probert’s commitment to the school community was extensive. He coached sailing, tennis, and squash, leaving an indelible impression on students and colleagues alike. His dedication to Germantown Academy was recognized by the Alumni Society Board, who inducted him as a member of the honorary Class of 1760. Upon his retirement, his legacy was honored in perpetuity through the establishment of a scholarship in his name, a lasting testament to his contributions.

Probert will be remembered for his remarkable intellect and passion for the arts, and for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit. He will be deeply missed by the entire Germantown Academy community.

“I had the privilege of having my very first GA tour from Edwin, the expert of every nook and cranny within our 126 acres of amazing. As fate would have it, a huge storm arose, and GA lost power. In an era before phone flashlights, Edwin was completely non-plussed. Our tour continued uninterrupted as he regaled me with tales both hysterical and eyebrow-raising, and I used my mind’s eye to envision the surroundings as depicted by a brilliant storyteller, ebullient personality, and tried-and-true Patriot. Edwin was a legend among legends, and his loss is immeasurable, as were his gifts.”
