Dear Friends, Welcome to GA 264! Opening this year with the largest enrollment in school history with 1,222 students reminds us that even after centuries of excellence in education, our mission resonates deeply with families. With over 180 new students and more than a dozen new teachers joining us from across the country, we know that the Academy appeals to so many thanks to our remarkably talented faculty and staff, beautiful campus, constantly evolving curriculum, and strong community focus. It is a great time to be a Patriot! This year marks the culmination and launch of two major, all-school, multi-year initiatives: the opening of our awe-inspiring, 25,000+ square foot Health & Wellness Center and the implementation of the new Community Commitments. We were proud to celebrate both of these achievements along with our traditional Flag Raising to start the year with everyone gathered around Connor Quad on September 15. Simply put, the Health & Wellness Center is a game-changer for all of GA – students, employees, alumni/ae, and families alike. The impressive Jordan Center, replete with a huge array of strength and conditioning equipment, views into the Preserve and the pool, and our two multifunctional wellness rooms for mindfulness, meditation, dance, yoga, etc., will enable everyone to actively pursue their own wellness journeys right on campus. In addition, the Live Well Lobby and Hall of Athletic Achievement will serve as community hubs highlighting the rich history of GA athletics in a gorgeous, welcoming space. Led by Assistant Head of School Nidhi McVicar P’31’31 and the Strategic Vision Task Force of the Board of Trustees, the crafting of GA’s new Community Commitments has been two years in the making. With three profound stanzas (and five succinct-but-moving ‘kid-friendly’ bullets), these sentiments define how we hope and expect every Patriot to live in their pursuit of our mission. See page 12 for more details of this important initiative. As always, GA is better with and because of our thousands of alumni/ae around the world, and we hope the opening of the new Health & Wellness Center will provide another reason to come home and visit us on campus. For those who want to come for a workout, Jordan Center hours are posted right on our website. As we relaunch a ‘Lunch & Learn’ speaker series initiated by the legendary Jim Fenerty 1760, we hereby put a call out to our graduates active in the fields of nutrition, professional athletics, coaching, yoga, mindfulness, sports psychology, and sports science/medicine to connect with our Alumni Office (alumni@germantownacademy.org). We’d love to have you share your expertise with our current students, and they would love to learn from you and get to know you. Wishing a happy, healthy school year to you and yours,

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS...
?
EMILY WAGNER 1760 While her dreams include living in the south of France, retired Middle and Upper School French teacher Mme Emily Wagner 1760 is enjoying pleasant days in nearby Huntingdon Valley, tending to her garden and enjoying the company of other GA retirees.
Retirement from GA in June 2012 was emotionally hard, but I have come to enjoy it. I still miss my students and my colleagues terribly, but not all the evening work, endless meetings, or comment writing! In keeping with the GA tradition of giving back to the community, I serve on the boards of several professional and local organizations and edit their newsletters. Also, because I loved–and missed–teaching so much, I accepted a position as an adjunct professor at Chestnut Hill College and taught there from 2013 until the pandemic hit, but it was not GA. I have so many fond and funny memories of my 32 years at GA, from Flag Raising to the faculty line at graduation, I cannot single out just one. There are the many trips I planned and took to France and Quebec with students where they tried out their French and marveled at the sights, sounds, and tastes of other cultures. There was the time a parent insisted that I was a former
nun. There was the parent, my first year at GA in 1980, who told my whole advisory parent group on my first “Meet-the-Teacher” night that I had taught her in high school. Then, 32 years later, a parent announced to my advisory parent group that I had taught her, her children, and now her grandchildren. It was then I knew it was time to retire! Most significant to me, though, are the many notes I have received from former students about how learning French has graced their personal and professional lives. I am in touch with many of them by email and on social media and love getting together with them to reminisce about the “good old days” at GA. They are all very special people. Family matters and the pandemic have deterred my wanderlust, but I am starting to think about adventuring abroad again soon. In the meantime, I keep busy with family, friends, reading, and tending my little garden. Plain, pure, but profound pleasures.
TWO HONORED WITH DOVE BECKER SOCIETY INDUCTION Spanish teacher Carol D. Peery Ayers 1760 and Upper School Mathematics teacher Susan Negro 1760. Schellhas acknowledged how both Ayers and Negro created successful exchange programs abroad from scratch, connecting GA to schools across the globe, ensuring students have an opportunity to meaningfully expand their cultural literacy, confidence, collaboration, and connections. He added that he knows firsthand that launching an exchange is sometimes the easiest part, and that the real challenge exists in sustaining programs by continuing relationships, building new ones when people leave, and continuing to shape and redirect a program to meet the evolving needs of both students and schools. Outside of the office of Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760, there is a plaque recognizing members of a special group at Germantown Academy. The Dove Becker Society, named for James Dove and Hilarius Becker, the two founders of GA, recognizes members of the community who have created or perpetuated significant programs that have expanded GA’s campus in compelling and engaging ways. Two new members were inducted into The Dove Becker Society at the end of the 2022-23 school year – Upper School 4 | GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
“Sue and Carol have done a stellar job of building exemplary exchange programs for GA in the UK and Spain respectively,” said Schellhas. “Each of their programs represents the best of our school thanks to their dedication, hard work, passion, creativity, pluck, and gritty tenacity. So many students have benefited and will benefit from their brilliance in expanding our campus in such a meaningful way.”
CAMPAIGN NEWS SECURING GA’S FUTURE THROUGH ENDOWMENT GROWTH One of GA’s most valuable resources doesn’t teach or coach; it doesn’t create curriculum or design innovative opportunities. This silent contributor has enormous potential and makes an impact on campus each day. • It ensures that the most talented students of all backgrounds can achieve excellence at GA. • It helps to attract, retain, and support our exceptional faculty members. • Its growth allows the school to make capital improvements to campus. • It is the largest indicator of our school’s aspirational future. This all-important resource is our ENDOWMENT. A critical objective of the Our Moment campaign is to raise $16 million to increase and strengthen GA’s endowment. The funds raised through this effort are carefully managed so that the school can draw interest off the investments and create vital annual income that is directed towards areas such as student financial aid, faculty compensation, and experiential learning. GA’s endowment is comprised of more than 100 funds that have been established over several decades by alumni, parents, and friends of our school community. These funds range in purpose – some are restricted to providing financial aid or programmatic support, while others are more general and support areas of greatest need. Many of these funds were created in honor or memory of GA community members. Endowment gifts are a permanent source of funding for the school that can create a lasting legacy while strengthening GA’s. To learn more about endowment giving, please contact Brooke Record, Director of Institutional Advancement, at Brooke.Record@germantownacademy.org or 267-405-7212

Class of 2023 Graduates The 2023 Class Stone
Congratulations 1760 Alumni (L to R) Morgan Hellebusch ’23, Kayla D’Eletto ’23, and Ava Toren ’23 Germantown Academy welcomed the remarkable Class of 2023 into the school’s storied alumni body during a picture-perfect ceremony on Friday, June 9, 2023 on Connor Quad. Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760 and Board of Trustees President Lori R. Griswold 1760, employees, students, parents, and extended family members were inspired by student speakers Sam Wang ’23 and Stella Lee ’23. Upper School Mathematics Teacher and Head of Roberts House Allison Rader delivered the faculty speech.
(L to R) Cheryl Ross 1760, Carla Zighelboim 1760, B’Dette Guidetti 1760, Jen Leming ’97, P’27 ’30 President, Alumni Society Board
of the graduating class who have made the best use of their talents while at Germantown Academy,.
During the ceremony, Morgen Zighelboim ’23 and Joseph Richards ’23 were each awarded the Beard Memorial Award for fostering the spirit, cherishing the tradition, and promoting the interest of the Academy.
Lastly, Sam Wang was awarded the Academy Wooden Spoon Award. In the 19th century, GA seniors would gather for a “class dinner” at which they would regale each other with speeches, songs, and jokes. Prizes were awarded for academic excellence, and one deserving student received a large wooden spoon that represented their efforts to “nourish” other students through kindness and character. In 2021, the Academy reinstated this award once again to acknowledge one senior’s kindness and character. Also included in the ceremony was the induction of new members to the honorary alumni Class of 1760. Alumni Society Board President Jennifer Rotzell Leming ’97 announced that this year’s honorary alumni inductees are Child Care Assistant Group Supervisor, Bernadette Guidetti, Trustee and Chair of the Parent of Alumni Association, Cheryl Ross P ’10 ’13, and Director of Communications and Marketing, Carla Zighelboim P’23 ’26.
Maria Petko ’23 and Aaron Parks ’23 were each presented with the Head of School Prize, which is awarded to the two students

Forever Patriots CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING FACULTY ON THEIR RETIREMENT
Quotes below are provided by a grateful Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760.
JOANNE BATES, 26 YEARS “For almost three decades, Joanne Bates has shared her musical gifts and passion with hundreds of GA students fortunate enough to have her as their cello and double bass instructor. Knowing how frequently we have had to move our private music studios over the years due to various construction projects, I imagine Joanne has taught in nearly as many spaces as the number of students she has taught! But regardless of location, she remained laser-focused on sharing her deep talent and pedagogical skill with each individual musician, as if they were the only one in the world. I will never forget Joanne’s decision regarding one particularly extraordinary student when she encouraged him to seek an even higher level of professional training because she knew he had the ability to play bass professionally at the most elite ranks. This tells you everything you need to know about Joanne as a teacher – humble, student-centered, generous, and truly invested. As she retires to embrace her role as a grandparent, we celebrate Joanne’s musical legacy at the Academy.”
MARTHA MCGLINCHEY, 12 YEARS
“When everything goes right, the person who manages a school’s payroll is like a secret genie working behind the scenes - diligently, accurately, promptly processing our livelihoods so that we give them nary a thought. Fortunately, we’ve never had to think about what might happen when something goes wrong, because Martha McGlinchey is just that good. With a steady hand, an outstanding work ethic, and a pride of purpose, Martha has scrupulously managed thousands and thousands of payroll entries, whether for hourly employees, temporary employees, salaried employees, or any other kind of employee one could possibly conjure up. Personally, I have always been grateful for Martha’s conscientiousness, confidence, and humor. She takes her work seriously but in stride, always thoughtful about life’s bigger picture, especially her effusive love for her family. Martha is an essential part of GA’s highly functioning business office, but in retirement she leaves us stronger than how she found us, having successfully managed our recent major transition to electronic time sheets. An explorer of the world, Martha will make the most of her well-earned retirement, just as a genie deserves, but she will be missed nonetheless.”
GLENDA DAULERIO 1760, 47 YEARS “It’s a given that English teachers love books, but Glenda Daulerio really, truly, in a from-the-bottom-of-her-heartextreme-fandom-kind-of-way loves books, particularly Young Adult books and authors, and that passion has only grown over the 4+ decades she has graciously served GA. Speak with any alum (or colleague, for that matter) from over the course of Glenda’s tenure, and they will wax poetic about her love of all things English, her intense care for every student, and the ebullient spirit that imbues everything she does. Speak with any administrator, and we will laud with awe and reverence Glenda’s sublime eagerness to help support any activity at any time that will make the GA Middle School a better place and will enhance the experience for even just one student. She’s 100% GA, every hour of every day, and has been, without a moment’s waning, for 47 years. Simply put, there is no one like her. Even in retirement, Glenda’s symbiosis with GA will never, ever fade. She is a living legend, an expert hugger, the dictionary definition of a dedicated teacher, a walking encyclopedia of GA history, and an extraordinary school person. I am humbled by and grateful for her remarkable service.” Read more about Glenda on page 16.

COLLEGE COUNSELING
Excerpt taken from the full article by Karen Mason, Director of College Counseling. Go to this link: https://www.germantownacademy.net/ academics/college-counseling/the-new-college-admission-landscape As the college admission landscape shifts, so does the programming offered by the Germantown Academy’s College Counseling Office. In the early 2000s, the office was comprised of one full-time director and seven part-time college counselors/teachers. The team has now evolved to four full-time professional college counselors, all of whom work with approximately 35 students from each grade level. This small caseload, compared to many public and parochial schools where counselors work with 450 students per grade, allows GA college counselors to establish strong relationships with students and families. Our counselors are constantly educating themselves on the latest admission trends by visiting college campuses, presenting at professional conferences, serving on college admission advisory boards, and scouring the numerous e-lists and news sources about the world of college admission. Each fall, GA hosts approximately 145 admission counselors representing colleges and universities from all over the world. A member of the College Counseling team meets with each representative, and interested juniors and seniors join the sessions. In the spring, GA also hosts its annual college fair in the Field House in conjunction with five other area independent schools. The fair provides an opportunity for sophomores, juniors, and their families to meet college admission counselors and ask questions. The college admission counselors who visit GA are typically the readers of applications, so establishing a meaningful connection can be helpful to the process.

For the past 13 years, staples of the educational programming have been: • “College Seminar” – a class for juniors to learn how to research colleges and complete a first draft of the Common Application, an application now accepted by over 1,000 colleges; • Personal Essay Writing – a course where a member of the English Department guides students in writing a strong college essay; • Parent Programs – a series of parent programs for specific grade levels and for all Upper School parents; • Individual Work – meetings that assist with the compilation of individual colleges lists, strategizing on how to apply, and reviewing essays and applications. College Counseling has also partnered with the Alumni Office on a program to expose Upper School students to various majors and careers. All freshmen attended a session on “Making the Most of Your Time at GA” with alumni who are still in college. All other Upper School students selected two sessions to attend: Health Care, Business and Entrepreneurship, What to do with a Liberal Arts Degree and the Visual Arts, and the Performing Arts. This program complements the annual alumni panel held each January for students and parents whereby current college students share their advice on the college application process and preparing for college. Because of changes to the college application process, new educational programming for the 2023-24 school year will include: 1. A program for parents and guardians of 8th and 9th grade students focused on “making the most of GA’s Upper School” and learning about the college counseling services. 2. A series of opt-in workshops for seniors focused on completing the Self-Reported Academic Record required by
some state schools, mindfulness and the college admission process (targeting the stress of the process and ways to reduce and cope with it), investigating historically black colleges and universities, and exploring college funding. 3. A webinar and individual financial planning counseling from Smarttrack, a company that provides support to families of students in grades 9-11. Financial planning is more important than ever with some private colleges now costing more than $80,000 per year, and state-related universities like Pitt and Penn State raising their base tuition as well.
to think strategically about their lists, especially because the ED admission rates are often significantly higher than the regular rates. As the graphic below illustrates, colleges are filling 50% or more of their classes with ED applicants. Certain majors (computer science, engineering, business, pre-med, nursing) have become extremely competitive at more selective colleges and sometimes have extremely low admit rates compared to those of general applicants. If the major is in high demand, college counselors help students determine if their interest in a particular major is stronger than their interest in a particular college.
College admissions has certainly been a significant topic in the news this year. The recent Supreme Court decision on affirmative action has caused much anxiety among admission professionals, students, and parents. While some admission deans have announced additional essays to their applications that tease out the diverse backgrounds of students, others are holding off making decisions until their legal counsels review admission evaluation policies to ensure Applying Early Decision to a college can dramatically improve a student’s odds of gaining admission. compliance with the ruling. Despite these changes, GA’s College Counseling team remains steadfast in its philosophy that students need to focus on fit, Since the pandemic, the colleges and universities offering testidentifying colleges where they can continue to grow and flourish optional and test free policies have increased to 1,900. The as scholars and community members. College Counseling places test-optional policies often add to student stress by causing emphasis on developing relationships with students – so they them to question the integrity of the policies themselves and to can recommend appropriate colleges and so they can serve as determine if their test scores will indeed enhance their application. advocates in crafting a compelling letter of recommendation. College Counselors advise students about each of their colleges College Counseling may be vastly different in 2023 than it was just by comparing their scores to the scores of the middle 50% of 10 years ago, but the focus on the student remains central to the accepted students, but even this is complicated. process and the passion of the team. The continuing trend of rising application volume at most highly selective colleges requires vigilance in evaluating students’ college lists and educating families about the changes in application requirements. The Ivies, plus Stanford, Duke, and MIT, now have acceptance rates in the single digits; universities and colleges from Boston College to Vassar have acceptance rates in the low teens, and many public universities have experienced dramatic upticks in application volume as families chose name recognition and lower costs over regional colleges and universities. Colleges continue to encourage students to apply early in the application season (in the fall of senior year prior to November15). Today, over 300 colleges offer Early Action, a non-binding offering of admissions, and urge students to apply early to receive an answer ahead of the regular decision timing. Early Decision (ED), where a student is making a binding agreement to attend, remains popular with admission offices and students. These application options require counselors to encourage and coach students

CAMPUS NEWS COMMUNITY COMMITMENTS
“As we officially begin our 264th year, let us hold close to our hearts not just the GA Mission, but also the new GA Community Commitments. The Commitments center what we genuinely value at GA: ideas like kindness, inclusion, standing up for others, and actively learning about new ideas. I’d like to share my appreciation for everyone in our community who generously offered us ideas and feedback during the design process. It was a deeply gratifying experience to collectively craft something that reflects who we are and who we strive to be.”
- Nidhi McVicar, Assistant Head of School Flag Raising, September 15, 2023
BE KIND - Karl Little, GA Groundskeeper At GA, we lead with goodness, and we recognize that the sharing of kindness with our classmates, teachers, and the entire community makes us a better, stronger school by far. We know that it is right to follow the platinum rule: to treat others the way they wish to be treated.
Carrying on the work of Joseph Richards ’23, Blair Mitchell ’25 has actively engaged with the Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC) of Philadelphia, a dedicated organization offering essential services such as food, healthcare, housing, employment, benefits, and emotional support to veterans. Motivated by the pressing needs of these veterans, Mitchell established the Forgotten Warriors Foundation. In August, Mitchell, along with Antoine Russell ’25, Stavi Sterious ’26, and Steven Tunison, coordinated a special cooking class for the Women’s Center at VMC. Beyond crafting delicious dumplings, the valiant veterans shared their profound life experiences, shedding light on the formidable challenges they face, particularly in relation to mental health issues. The VMC community espouses virtues and qualities like compassion, courage, and integrity, all of which directly align with the core values of the GA mission statement.
BE INCLUSIVE - Shireen Singh, LS Associate Teacher Germantown Academy Patriots celebrate that which makes each of us unique. We welcome new friends, and we extend ourselves to others so that they feel a genuine sense of belonging in the cafeteria, in the halls, in the classrooms, on the fields, and all over our beautiful campus. BE AN ACTIVE LEARNER - Bayard Templeton, MS History Teacher We acknowledge we are so fortunate to be in a school where the art and act of learning is honored. We do our best as teachers to engage our students, and we do our best as students to be thoughtful, collaborative, and curious about new perspectives and ideas. BE AN UPSTANDER - Amanda Amorosi ’16, MS Counselor At GA, we stand up for ourselves as we stand up for each other and for those whose voices are too often unheard in this world. We are courageous when faced with unfairness or unkindness on our campus and beyond. We think about the impact of our actions and we speak up in the face of wrongdoing. BE MY BEST SELF - Ben Tinsley, US Modern Language Chair Being a GA Patriot means we always put forth our best effort, we work hard, and we extend ourselves to others who may need our help and care. We also ask for help when we need it. We take pride in our character, and we strive to hold ourselves to the highest standards of honor and integrity. 12 | GERMANTOWN ACADEMY

Luke Philip ’24, Angie Wang ’24, Elaine Li ’24, and Andrei Vava ’24 were each awarded a McNeil Patriot Scholarship during 2023 Prize Day. The McNeil Patriot Scholarship award is given to four rising seniors who have built an uncompromised reputation in the following areas: leadership, personal character and conduct, scholarship, and full engagement in the extra-curricular life of the school. The four awards are named in honor of four legendary GA educators – Suzanne Baird Perot 1760, Virginia Belle Day 1760, E. Daniels Rankin 1760, and Peter Biggs 1760. The Patriot Scholars oversee the Upper School student tutoring program, serve as hosts to school guests, and run culturebuilding elements like the Upper School “Thought Wall.”
Sam Wang ’23 won the Grand Award, three Special Awards, and significant prize money at the 2023 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas. Wang’s second place Grand Award was in the category of Robotics and Intelligent Machines, and his Special Awards include the third-place award from Association for Computing Machinery, Science Seed Award from Shanghai Youth Science Education Society, a 1-year free student membership to the International Council of Systems Engineering (INCOSE), and free virtual admission to the 2023 International Symposium of the INCOSE. The third generation of the Piszek Family is carrying on the tradition of giving a book to every child in the Lower School. Polish immigrant Edward Piszek 1760 became a very successful entrepreneur and embraced a life that was filled with helping others. His children, the late Bill Piszek ’77 and the late Helen Piszek Nelson ’70, fulfilled his wishes of generosity to the students of GA, and Bill and Beth Piszek’s children, Ashley ’15 and Andrew ’18, continued that legacy this spring. This year, the book was written by someone very close to GA, Science Teacher Emeriti Craig Newberger 1760. After presentations, the book, Spring Processional–Encounters with a Waking World, was handed out to each student.
Members of the 4th Grade took a trip to nearby private airport Wings Field to experience the concepts of flight that they had been learning about in class. During the trip, students were able to see firsthand how the different forces of flight work together to make airplanes and helicopters fly.
ATHLETIC NEWS POWER READY TO LEAD GIRLS BASKETBALL PROGRAM Lauren Power has joined the GA Athletic Department as the new Head Coach for Varsity Girls Basketball and the school’s Associate Athletic Director. Power is no stranger to the Inter-Ac League after serving as the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in Villanova, PA. She led the Irish to the best record in the league in 2021 and earned second-place finishes in 2019, 2022, and 2023. Across her four years at Notre Dame, Power collected 76 wins. In addition, she mentored three NCAA Division I players, three 1,000-point scorers, three McDonald’s All-American nominees, two PA All-State players, one Inter-Ac MVP, two Markward Player of the Year award recipients, eight All-Delco All-Main Line players, and eight All-Inter-Ac players. GA’s new coach will inherit a team that went 19-11 overall and 9-3 in Inter-Ac League play in 2022-23. The Patriots return eight letterwinners and four seniors, including captains and All-League standouts Izzy Casey ’24 and Jess Aponik ’24.
The boys tennis team, led by 7th year Head Coach Lupe Prince, won their second consecutive Inter-Ac League Championship during the 2023 season, earning back-to-back league titles for the first time since the 1985 and 1986 seasons. The Patriots finished the season 10-2 overall and 9-1 in league play. Alex Katzer ’25, Armon Meinstein ’24, and Aiden Swartz ’25 were named First Team All-Inter-Ac, while Max Baer ’24 and Vincent Zhou ’26 were named Second Team.

FROM THE FRONT OF THE LINE always there in case of emergency. At one point, the enrollment was low. Jim called on Glenda (who was out on maternity leave) to help steady the ship from mid-July to Labor Day. Glenda stepped in as Director of Admission and enrolled an additional 59 students, saving the school from a financial crisis. Jim recalls her working every day of that summer, often into the evenings and even over the weekends.” A few years later, Daulerio left administration and returned to the classroom because she really missed teaching.
Glenda Daulerio 1760 P’07 leads the GA faculty line through her final graduation. Commencement is defined as, “one commences or moves on to something else.” At graduation, teachers see their students moving toward their future, proud to see them off. It also means their time at GA has ended. This year was bittersweet for Middle School English teacher Glenda Daulerio 1760 P’07. It was her 47th graduation, her students would be moving on, and this would be her final time leading the faculty line before her retirement. A time-honored tradition, this role is reserved for the longesttenured teacher at the Academy.
FROM THE BEGINNING Daulerio began her journey with Germantown Academy in 1976. She was working for the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit as a contracted reading specialist when she heard that GA had an opening teaching a supplement to students’ regular English classes. She was offered the job and happily accepted it. “I absolutely loved it,” she remembers. “Then came the next year. I bumped into Head of School Bud Kast in the hallway, and he said, ‘Is it OK if you just work for us full-time?’ I jumped at the chance!” Teaching English doesn’t even begin to cover all the things that Daulerio has done at, and for, GA. In his speech at her retirement celebration, Peter Jennings ’99 included the following excerpt, “Head of School Jim Connor 1760 remembers that she was 16 | GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
The most obvious question begs, after so may years, how did she keep things fresh? For Daulerio, department and division heads always encouraged her to find new things to love, different ways to explore, and alternative ways to teach. So, she did. During her early years, Daulerio could be found teaching 7th and 8th Grade history classes and English classes and Algebra A and serving as head advisor. At one point, she was doing readability studies for Middle School history. To understand the teaching hands-on, Daulerio traveled to England to see if the materials partnered with real-life history. “I went to all the different places in the history books surrounding the Elizabethan Age. The textbooks would discuss Hampton Court Palace, the home of Henry VIII, and I went there to see its history in detail. The opportunity was incredible,” said Daulerio. The opportunities kept presenting themselves as Daulerio became involved in national and state organizations like NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) and PCTELA (The Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts) which gave her the rare opportunity to meet up-and-coming authors who turned into important literary figures. “In class we were reading Fever 1793,” she said. “I knew that I was seeing the author, Laurie Halse Anderson, at a conference, so I brought the class’s copies of the book and she signed all of them and sent a video message!” Another such classic in Daulerio’s mind is The Giver by Lois Lowry. At one conference, Daulerio spoke to Lowry, who gave her own opinion on the ending (said Lowry to Daulerio on one occasion, “I had no idea that people would go so crazy about the ending!”).

At the Middle School’s end of year assembly, Anthony Commale, CSO Coordinator and Middle School math teacher, spoke about Daulerio’s longtime involvement in CSO. Her advisory gave her flowers and candy. Jeswald read a poem to her. But then came one of the biggest honors that Daulerio received, and it was quite rare. The Academy Club is an alumni organization whose members are chosen by their peers in recognition of their dedication, involvement, and school spirit as well as their commitment to keep their class connected to GA as alumni. Each year faculty speak about each new inductee. “I was invited to attend the event by one of the students who was being inducted and I was looking forward to sharing this with her,” said Daulerio. “But then they said they had a ‘special celebration’ and it turned out to be in honor of me! Rich (Schellhas) read a sonnet and then I was inducted into Academy Club. It was wonderful.”

The celebrations began during Upper School Prize Day in early June. “Head of Middle School Jonas Jeswald led me to believe they needed me in the Arts Center, and when I got there, the whole Upper School was there and they dedicated the Yearbook to me, to honor my years at GA,” Daulerio recalled. “Morgan Hellebusch ’23 read the dedication to me, and it was just so sweet. It was such a great honor.”
“The best part of graduation is the ‘Handshake Line’ which should really be called the ‘Hugging Line,’” said Daulerio. “We faculty are so lucky to get to watch each class as they grow up, and it really is such a joy to be able to say goodbye and good luck at the end of their journey.”

“A good example of where my interests and longevity intersect is with the Harobin Family,” Daulerio reflected. “I taught or chaperoned all four of the Harobin children, including their mother, Becky Bown Harobin ’88!”
“Additionally I have to say, I loved working for both Jim Connor 1760 and Rich Schellhas 1760,” added Daulerio. “They were like The Odd Couple! They both inspired me to be my best self, to be the best teacher I could be. Overall, you just couldn’t pick better people to work with than the teachers at GA.”

Daulerio continues to enjoy the relationships she developed with her students, advisees, and players throughout the years, some of whom are now current parents. She loves reunion weekend around GA/PC Day and attends reunions each year, visiting with her former students and exploring their lives postGA. Daulerio spent some time this summer in Avalon, NJ and every day she saw a different alum. She still gets birthday wishes from some, proving that “you never lose contact with some of your students.”
“My colleagues were so supportive this last year,” said Daulerio. “There were little moments throughout the year, when I said, ‘This will be my last Flag Raising. This will be my last holiday CSO event.’ It has been very bittersweet. But my division, and especially my department, has always been there for me.”

Daulerio’s chaperoning, supervising, and van driving is legendary. “I love chaperoning! I’ve done Williamsburg, VA, Washington, DC, the 6th Grade camping trip (even though I do NOT camp), New York City, Rome, Quebec, ski club, and others,” Daulerio said. “I coached both softball and basketball and drove the van for squash. I have also supervised two clubs that are near and dear to my heart — CSO and Reading Olympics!”

Q&A
MICHAEL H. JORDAN
PRESIDENT, BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Michael Jordan started his three-year tenure as the President of the Board of Trustees in June 2023. He has been a member of the Board since 2008 and has sat on numerous committees, including the Executive Committee and Campus Planning Committee, and served as the Chair of the Finance and Investment Committees. Michael and his wife, Samantha MacGregor Jordan ’88, are cabinet members of Our Moment, the Campaign for a Stronger GA, and he has been a member of several search committees for various positions at Germantown Academy. He is a Principal at Mill Creek Capital Advisors in Conshohocken. Michael and Sam have three children, Wills ’19, Talie ’21, and Mac ’23. How are you connected to GA? My family and I have been part of the fabric of GA for many years. My wife, Sam, is a graduate, and we have three children who were all “lifers” at GA. We have been fortunate to have been a part of this unique community and have benefited greatly from all it has to offer. I can’t think of a better way to give back to a community than serving in this capacity for an institution that has given so much to our family. What does the Board of Trustees do? GA is so fortunate to have a group of dedicated individuals who offer thoughtful perspectives and carry GA’s best interest at the core of every decision. The work of the Board is meant to be strategic in nature. We strive to support Rich Schellhas and his team in their work to shape the education of students and the direction of the school. We are guided by the Mission Statement and the Community Commitments in all that we do. What is your favorite place on campus? Connor Quad is such an obvious one, but it’s because I have so many memories of that beautiful space. It joins all parts of the physical school and provides the community with a special place for the Halloween Parade, Flag Raising, and Graduation, just to name a few. Also, the spirit for GA that you feel in Sisters’ Woods is wonderful. All through the years, families cheering on the sidelines in such a beautiful setting is inspiring. How can GA thrive for the next 264 years? The Board and administration are continuing work on a first-ever endowment campaign. Much of the work of the Board is built around finances and the sustainability of the institution. Our goal is to plan successfully for the next 264 years and to continue to steward the finances of the school in a responsible and forward-looking way. These efforts go a long way to making GA more affordable to all students, supporting our talented faculty, and enhancing the innovative programming our students deserve. What makes the GA Community so special? At the root of it, our community is vested in each other and the school. This is a close-knit community. There is an “IT” factor here that has a lot to do with the relationships formed – teachers, students, alumni, families. Your favorite GA tradition is…Flag Raising. It is very rare when every part of the school is together for an event - trustees, all three divisions, faculty, and staff. I also must mention that I really enjoy GA/PC Spirit Week. I think it’s so important for school spirit and culture, and of course there are great memories that stay with the kids far past graduation. Describe the Grand Opening of the Health & Wellness Center. Cutting the ribbon on the new Health & Wellness Center was truly special. There are so many great spaces within the building, but the idea of the whole space as a connector – a community hub – is what will make it a game-changer for GA.

Doctors Desrene and Marc Freeman P’23 ’23 are both physicians and parents to twin graduates from the Class of 2023. Their professional commitment to the mental and physical health of the greater community is complimented by their personal dedication as GA parents and, in Desrene’s case, in service to our school’s Board of Trustees. The pinnacle of their deep engagement is reflected in their multi-level gift to the Our Moment campaign. Together they chose to invest in both priorities of Our Moment, the construction of a new campus Health & Wellness Center and the growth of our school’s endowment in support of experiential learning, GAXP. “We view these vital areas of focus: both the mental and physical well being of our young people and the provision for ‘beyond the classroom’ learning standard to be key tenants of our family priorities. We have committed our careers to promoting wellness and proudly partner with GA in supporting this special educational brand of a caring communityboosting curriculum.”

GA also hosted a Health & Wellness Center Open House on Connor Quad with food, family fun, and a sneak-peek of the new building. Over 150 people previewed the facility, greeted by Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760 as well as members of the Athletics and Health & Wellness departments, as they highlighted the exciting new spaces sure to enhance the GA experience.
The success of GA Giving Day was thanks to our incredible volunteers! Approximately 50 dedicated Patriots, including students, alumni, parents, and faculty & staff, reached out to peers encouraging their participation in the Annual Fund, fostered the fun on Connor Quad, and rallied together to Empower Our Patriots.
Thank You!

Led by the 2023 Academy Club inductees, the senior class learned more about staying connected to GA after their graduation in June 2023 through volunteering, networking, affinity groups, alumni events, and giving. Members of GA’s Alumni Society Board offered a special challenge to the Class of 2023, matching every student gift with an additional $20.23. More than 50 members of the senior class participated in this effort, achieving a record high! Thank you to our Alumni Society Board Members who participated in the Senior Giving Week matching challenge and thanks to the members of the Class of 2023 who are carrying on the tradition of giving at GA.

Entering their ninth year as GA parents, Ira and Jenny Brownstein P’28 ’30 join the many in recognition of how fast time flies. Over the years, they have deepened their personal volunteer commitment, highlighted by Jenny’s leadership roles with the Parents’ Committee and Ira’s service on the Board of Trustees. Their commitment to the advancement of our school is evident in the special way they approached their participation in the Our Moment campaign. In the immediate term, they generously supported the Health & Wellness Center which represents their family’s priority for living and supporting a healthy lifestyle.

In addition, they have made a longer-term investment in the school by making plans to support the school’s endowment through their estate. This bequest is a thoughtful promise to boost the school’s fiscal health well into the future, and now qualifies them among the newest members of the Samuel E. Osbourn Society of donors who have made such provisions. “Doing our part in the moment means helping to assure the viability of the Health & Wellness Center at this critical time and we are so excited to see the impact this state-of-the art facility will have on every child for years to come. Also, we are interested in doing our part to ensure that GA always has the financial resources to meet the needs of its community. We have found it easy to consider our family legacy by making a provision for the future now.”

All Zoom’d Out The GA Parents’ Committee knocked it out of the park again with their bi-annual friend and fundraising event, All Zoom’d Out, raising more than $300,000. On April 28, 2023, over 400 people gathered at The Country House at Bluestone for this year’s event. Attendees danced to the musical stylings of EBE, anxiously awaited the winner of the diamond ring raffle, bid on 130 silent auction items, and took part in an exciting live auction of extra-special items like a 3-night escape to Turks & Caicos, a date-night experience including dinner, tickets to the Bruce Springsteen concert, and an overnight stay at the Four Seasons Philadelphia, and finally the highly coveted VIP experience to the hottest concert of the summer, Taylor Swift! With more than 600 people in total participating in the silent auction both in person and online, this event was an exciting celebration of the GA parent community. Special thanks to the All Zoom’d Out Committee Chairs for bringing this event to life: Jenny Brownstein P’28 ’30, Krista Buerger P’28 ’30 ’33, Tricia Goodman P’32 ’34, Amy Huselton P’29, and Erin O’Hearn Paone P’27 ’29 ’31. Rich and Gabrielle Krekstein P’31 ’32 ’36 have been GA parents for five years, and when asked, have answered the call for support in many impactful ways. When the idea of creating an on-campus hub for Health & Wellness was circulated, they were among the first to pledge their support to the Our Moment campaign. Their active family will benefit from access to the new Center for many years to come. The Kreksteins are also longtime proponents of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program and its impact on providing financial aid support to schools like Germantown Academy. The formula is simple, make a gift to GA scholarships and in return receive tax credit from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They have been participating in the program since 2020 and are members of Friends of Education LLC, GA’s privately managed Special Purpose Entity (SPE). “The EITC program is a no brainer! It is an easy way to choose exactly where your state tax dollars are applied. We all pay state income taxes, so why wouldn’t you take advantage of a program that allows you to direct those dollars to significantly support educational opportunities here at GA. We have been strong proponents of the EITC program even prior to coming to GA. It’s something we are proud and passionate about and we are happy to personally explain the benefits to anyone considering it.”

FRED STRAUB & CAROLYN McTERNAN: A FAMILY AFFAIR
For Fred Straub ’67 and his daughter, Carolyn Straub McTernan ’00, it’s all about the people. These third- and fourth- generation jewelers get excited about the people who come through the door, now at their new space in Lower Gwynedd, PA, Fred H. Straub Jewelers. While both admit change is hard (they just moved the company from Abington after 60+ years), it is the people that continue to visit with purpose that keeps the duo going. “The new space is very comfortable and the right size for what we need going forward,” said Straub. “There was A LOT of stuff to go through; it seemed like we never threw anything out all the way back to when the store was in Germantown! But what a journey that was going through all the old things. So many memories from when I was a child learning the business from my grandfather, then father and uncle.”
“We want to know why they treasure it, what’s the story behind it,” Straub said. “It’s a total honor for us to be a small part of what could be a generational piece of history. Artisanship and business acumen are what has kept our family business going all these years, but it is also the personalized service we provide.” The duo concurs that you still need an eye for the design and the details to make a really good end piece. They are thankful they continue to have that vision. “Being able to interact with the customers and hear their stories and help them solve what needs to be solved, that’s what still interests me,” said Fred. “We take the time to show them their piece under the microscope so they can see it in a different light, helping give people an added appreciation. All our interactions are special.” If you can’t find Straub at the store, you just may find him sitting atop the stands on campus during game days. A captain of the 1966 soccer team, Straub and his brother, Bill ‘69, who recently retired, still enjoy returning to the Academy to cheer on the Patriots no matter what the sport. “I had a great experience with some wonderful faculty over the years that instilled in me the love of learning,” Straub said. “It is my pleasure to continue my involvement with GA; I come to games for the love of the game and the school. I truly enjoy the GA traditions and will never forget some of the characters in GA history who really gave the school a personality – Ted Handy 1760, Peter Biggs 1760, William Schoff 1760, Dan Rankin 1760, and more. “Coming to GA in sixth grade was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Straub said. “The experience here at GA really turned me around; it showed me how to value education. I was pleased to give this gift to my own children (Lifers Erick ’01 and Carolyn ’00).”

“During our 100th anniversary celebration, we had the idea of getting out all the old jewelry tools and displaying them,” McTernan said. “It was a wonderful conversation starter for so many people. And now we have the clock my great-grandfather made as an apprentice on display in the new shop, and that too is a great piece that people want to know and talk about.” Customers then and now also appreciate a well-made piece of jewelry. The Straubs pride themselves on their handmade pieces and take pride in all that they do. Whether it is an older piece that is being reworked as a gift to a younger family member or a newly designed ring that will help a couple start their new life together, each piece has a story. 50 | GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
“I feel very lucky to have gone here,” McTernan said. “I also found a love of learning and have fond memories of my cross country teams and Ms. Krouse. It’s the community that really makes GA what it continues to be today.” The GA community has certainly shown love for the Straubs. Weekly in the shop, someone who has a connection to GA comes in. There are days when all the customers have a GA connection, and then the next day, all the people seem to be from Penn Charter. They all want to talk, to tell their stories. And the Straub Family is there to take it all in. “We have so much fun together,” Straub said. “I can’t even imagine what I would do in retirement because I love doing all of this with Carolyn, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

KYLE GARLAND: MOVING
REUNION YEAR!
FAST TOWARDS THE OLYMPICS Heptathlete/Decathlete, University of Georgia
Track and Field Accomplishments: 2023: SEC Outdoor Track and Field Champion, NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Champion, Collegiate record-holder for most points scored in the Heptathlon (6,639). 2022: NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships (3rd), USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships (2nd), NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships (2nd), SEC Indoor Track and Field Champion, USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships (2nd) World Athletics Championships (11th) 2021: SEC Outdoor Track and Field Champion, NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships (2nd), SEC Indoor Track and Field Champion, USA Olympic Trials Track and Field (6th) 2020: SEC Indoor Track and Field Champion GA Mentors: Sara Goodwin (Middle School English), Kristin Donches 1760 (Middle School English Department Head, 7th Grade Health & Wellness), Gina Brown (Lower School), Tom Taft 1760 (Administrator, Coach) Top Skills learned at GA: Time management and patience
Biggest Challenge: “When I got to college, I was dealing with a bunch of nagging injuries. I had Tommy John surgery on my elbow the week before a big meet in the outdoor season of my freshman year, which took me out for about 12 months. I started college thinking that I’d make a big impact but the narrative got flipped on me, so I had to be patient and trust the plan. It was a whole new environment after being with the same people for 13 years, so I had to just buy in and trust the coaches and trainers. Once I got the hang of everything at Georgia, I was comfortable and was able to really excel on the track.” What’s Next: Rest and spend some quality time with family and friends and to eat whatever he wants. Potentially World Indoors and of course, the big goal of the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Academy Club Inducts its 100th Class
Just days before graduation in June, 17 members of the Class of 2023 became the 100th class of Academy Club representatives. While the group represents the many differing interests and perspectives of their class, it is apparent from the speeches given for each that they all have perseverance, curiosity, compassion, and character in common. Established in 1924, the Academy Club is an organization whose members are chosen by their peers in recognition of their dedication, involvement, and school spirit as well as their commitment to keep their class connected to GA as alumni. The purpose of the club is to create, in the words of the founders, a “closer relationship between the alumni body of Germantown Academy and the school itself.” The Alumni Office and Academy Club leadership were pleased to have two Academy Club members from the Class of 1950, the 27th class inducted, on hand to witness this 100th class induction. Dan Reid ’50 noted that while the event is much less formal with students in more casual attire, “It was certainly an impressive class that was inducted. The qualifications in each case were outstanding.” Bob Hardy ’50 concurred about the formality and added, “We appreciated the teacher presentations which were not a part of our initiation process in 1950.” In her opening remarks, Academy Club President Diana Rodgers ’03 said, “The founders of our school 263 years ago, the first Academy Club members a century ago, and my own classmates celebrating our 20th reunion, experienced a very different GA education than the one you received, but they would recognize the compassionate actions, prudent leadership, thoughtful scholarship, and enthusiastic school spirit as traits that are celebrated in all of you as things that are timelessly GA.”

CLASS NOTES
CLASS OF 1985
SCOTT FLIEGELMAN: FUN WITH PICKLEBALL GA. In the mid-80s, the level of play in the Inter-Ac was amazing and likely could’ve competed with many area college teams. Shoutout to the 1984 GA boys tennis team, captained by Jimmy Korman ’84, who won a highly elusive league championship over strong squads from Penn Charter, Haverford, and Episcopal! What do you think is so addictive about the sport? The chill vibe and welcoming community are a huge draw for so many players. In tennis, golf, and other sports, players generally show up with their foursome, play, and leave. Pickleball, rather, is known for its “open play” style, where you can show up by yourself and play with dozens of others, rotating around for a couple of hours. Beyond that, pickleball is easy to play and easy on the body, so it attracts players of every age and mobility level. Does your facility sponsor leagues for all levels of play, and is it the only one in the Boulder area? GA tennis letterwinner Scott Fliegelman ’85 set his sights on a new sport five years ago and hasn’t looked back. From playing (he’s a topranked senior pro player on the tour) and coaching to opening Boulder Pickleball in 2022 and winning a silver medal at the USA Pickleball National Championships that same year, Fliegelman hopes that what drew him to the sport continues to make believers out of others – it is so much fun! When did pickleball catch your eye? I had never heard of the sport before a friend introduced me in June 2019, saying that since I was a big tennis player, I would be really good. It turns out that my tennis experience was super helpful (thanks GA!) in making it to the pro ranks, but it is not required to become a very good player. On a side note: While I played NCAA Division I tennis at Rider University, followed by a couple of years of satellite/challenger level pro tourneys, my favorite years of competitive tennis were at
Zoe Shapiro Torrey ’19 graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Chicago. She’s now working at the National Academy for State Health Policy in Washington D.C.
Boulder Pickleball is the only indoor pickleball facility in the area and features five dedicated courts plus two smaller practice courts. Borrowing from the ski trails rating system, we feature open play and clinics for our 1,600+ members at the green, blue, and black levels. What can we see from this sport, and perhaps the people who play it, in future years? Everyone loves to talk about and visualize pickleball in the Olympics, which may be 8-12 years out. We’ll see. Last summer, I had the chance to join a group who traveled to Israel to promote pickleball. We were guests of the IOC-affiliated Maccabiah Games, held every four years, and one of the world’s largest sporting events. An exhibition event in 2022, pickleball will be featured as a medal sport in 2025 (shortened to three-year interval due to Covid).

Derrick Pitts ’73
From infinity to beyond is the best way to describe Derrick Pitts, the Chief Astronomer and Planetarium Director for the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He is not only the first African American to hold these dual titles at a major science institution in the United States, but he is also the first American to set this benchmark.
From serving as NASA Solar System Ambassador since 2009 and the “Astrobiology Ambassador” for the NASA/MIRS/UNCF Special Program Corporation’s Astrobiology Partnership Program to appearing as a science content expert on the “Colbert Report” on Comedy Central and “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on CBS, his reputation as a trailblazer spans the globe.
However, it is his life’s work to make science and astronomy accessible for young people. “The saying goes - each one, reach one, teach one,” Pitts said. “My one favorite thing to do here at the Franklin Institute really is to see the lightbulb go off above someone’s head when they understand the concept that they’ve always found challenging but now they’ve been able to understand.” He’s had an amazing journey to the top of his profession, has broken down barriers, and opened up opportunities for thousands of young people nationwide. “You can always do something, you just have to find the path to do it. Never give up looking for that path and continue to follow that which excites you,” he said.

William Hyndman V ’88
It is no surprise to anyone who knows him that perseverance is Bill Hyndman’s favorite core value. He believes that many of life’s challenges have helped build him into the person he is today and has experienced great satisfaction by facing his obstacles and never giving up on his goals. As a 12-year Army veteran who served as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, company commander, and personnel officer in the 82nd Airborne Division, Hyndman received three Meritorious Service Medals during his service. After leaving the military, he started a business called Patriot Connections, which focused on helping transition and place veterans in corporate positions by providing free career counseling and other job-search skills. Then, following his life-long passion, he joined First Tee - Greater Philadelphia, a non-profit dedicated to integrating the game of golf into life skills curriculum, as Executive Director in 2015. As one nominee wrote, 54 | GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
“Bill has helped build a golf program that services over 150 schools and youth centers. His non-profit annually teaches over 45,000 students in the Philly area, and has also built an endowed scholarship program for kids to attend private schools in the area. He has taken over two bankrupt city golf courses and provided a safe after-school program for children. Bill has impacted thousands of kids and instilled life skills they will use for the rest of their lives.” In addition to the incredible work he has done for our veterans and in the Philadelphia community, Hyndman continues to give back to GA. He serves as a resource for senior projects and partnering with our golf team to create a mentorship program with the children at First Tee.
Kurt Wetzel ’88
Kurt Wetzel embodies the GA mission in so many ways. As an alum, parent, teacher, coach, and mentor, he exemplifies compassion and collaboration daily. As one nominee wrote, “whether he is balancing the discipline/motivation/empathy line with Lower School students or instructing X’s and O’s with his Upper School players on the soccer field, Kurt just gets it. He knows the history of GA, he believes in the spirit of GA, and he is an omnipresent face for students, athletes, parents, colleagues, and other alumni.” A veteran member of the 5th Grade team, Wetzel develops connections with his students that go beyond their time in his classroom. Each year he is constantly looking for opportunities to volunteer and bring together the community to make GA stronger in whatever capacity he can.
In addition to his impact in the classroom, Wetzel has been coaching various teams of soccer at GA since 2003 and currently serves as the boys varsity coach, winning the Inter-Ac League in 2021 and tying for 2nd in 2022. He has also headed up the GA Summer Programs soccer camp as coach and director since 2003. Another nominee summed it up best by saying “Kurt’s name speaks for itself regarding his involvement throughout the GA community. GA alum, parent, teacher, coach, traffic coordinator, mentor…you name it, Kurt exemplifies compassionate in spirit and resonates all things GA.”
Laure Biron ’03
During a decade spent engaging at-risk youth in public art projects, Laure Biron realized she was more interested in the service aspects of her work than the actual painting. So Biron earned a social work degree at Bryn Mawr College and found her niche at Broad Street Ministry, the human services nonprofit where she is now CEO. Joining Broad Street in 2019 and becoming CEO in 2020, Laure launched a meal program called Step Up to the Plate to meet heightened need during the pandemic. Under her leadership, Broad Street went from serving 70,000 on-site meals annually to a four-site pickup operation that provided 1 million meals to hungry Philadelphians during the pandemic’s first two years. For guests, the meals often provide a gateway to transformative programs. “Today, Broad Street Ministry has become the region’s most creative social service organization for people experiencing deep
poverty,” says Biron. “We provide lifestabilizing services to more than 7,000 guests a year,” she adds. Biron now oversees a $3.5 million operating budget, the organization’s first strategic plan in nearly two decades, and pilot programs like a mobile hygiene truck. She’s also expanded training for employees of other nonprofits on topics like de-escalation, anti-bias and what she calls “radical hospitality,” her favorite descriptor of Broad Street’s mission. “We sustain a … [hope] that one day this practice of hospitality will be pervasive,” Biron says, “and no longer considered a radical act.” (sources: GridPhilly & The 2023 Above & Beyond by City & State Pennsylvania)
Steven Jackson ’04
“Media that resonates. Experiences that move you.” – Jackson-Cor mission
In 2015, Steven Jackson met his future business partner, Ricardo Calderon, as community organizers in the Philadelphia area. Their work intersected in the areas of community building, social justice, and storytelling. After some time they created Jackson-Cor, a media services company that focuses on the power of relationships to inspire positive change. Through the production arm of the company, Steven has produced short films such as “Be You: A Story of Self Love” and “Open Your Eyes: Conversations about Gun Violence and Healing”. More recently, the Jackson-Cor team formed a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania and the Center for
Black Educator Development to produce a short film that will feature youth and Black male role models discussing the intersection of health, Black men, and community. Jackson has also shared his gifts of mentoring with GA through his leadership on the Alumni Society Board, Black Alumni Alliance, and involvement with our Black Student Alliance. As one nominee wrote, “Steven spearheaded a mentor program for our Black male students called GAME (Germantown Academy Mentoring Experience), providing encouragement and guidance for our students who wanted to connect with our Black alums. He has been a passionate advocate for all students of color and is having a profound impact on the experiences of these students at GA.” Jackson’s compassion and dedication to community building have reached far and wide as he proudly works towards enacting real change.

A second lieutenant in the US Army, Margaret Anne Hubbell ’14 always knew she wanted to make a difference in an honorable way. Hubbell’s interest in serving our country came at an early age with the help of her father. In 8th Grade, she visited West Point for a football game (Army was playing Tulane, which was her dad’s alma mater) and loved it. Hubbell continued to explore her options but came to one conclusion - she wanted the opportunity to serve her country. “I was created to be able to do this.”

With her sights set on West Point, Hubbell made the decision to transfer to GA her junior year. She immediately felt that GA encouraged students in a way she hadn’t seen before. She expressed that during her time at GA, not only was she inspired to pursue what she wanted through hard work but was also given the resources to make it happen. After graduating in 2014, Hubbell realized her dream at the United States Military Academy where she played NCAA Division I basketball. When it came to leadership, Hubbell learned a great deal on the basketball court. As captain of the GA basketball team, she put her skills into action on the daily. “Working with Coach Retif and being a member of the basketball team helped me hone my leadership skills,” Hubbell said. “This was important because West Point is all about leadership, and I was able to show that I could lead teams and work with other people.” As Hubbell’s character continued to strengthen, so did her physical fitness, as training in 56 | GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
