A Study of the Manifest Presence of God in 1 Samuel 9:1 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. 2 And he had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people. 3 Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. So Kish said to Saul his son, “Take one of the young men with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.” 4 And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. And they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them. 5 When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, let us go back, lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us.” 6 But he said to him, “Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor; all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go.” 7 Then Saul said to his servant, “But if we go,
what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” 8 The servant answered Saul again, “Here, I have with me a quarter of a shekel of silver, and I will give it to the man of God to tell us our way.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for today's “prophet” was formerly called a seer.) 10 And Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was. 11 As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women coming out to draw water and said to them, “Is the seer here?” 12 They answered, “He is; behold, he is just ahead of you. Hurry. He has come just now to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place. 13 As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat till he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now go up, for you will meet him immediately.” 14 So they went up to the city. As they were entering the city, they saw Samuel coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.
“The last chapter (chapter 8) ended with the Lord telling Samuel to give the people a king and with Samuel ordering the elders to return, ‘each to his own city’ We would next expect to hear how Samuel went about choosing the king. However, while the fate of the nation hangs in the balance, the reader is introduced to a story of a young man named Saul who is looking for lost asses. This retardation of the narrative heightens the expectation. The young man apparently has nothing on his mind but farm matters and seemingly does not even know about Samuel. But we see how God sees these events as crucial to the history of the nation. He was clearly guiding by his providence the whole business of choosing the requested king.” (David Toshio Tsumura, The First book of Samuel)!

The passage introduces Saul. He comes from a family of standing and wealth. He is tall and handsome, R. P. Gordon says, “If a king is to be distinguished by his physical appearance then Saul is every inch a king.” After a short introduction of who Saul is and what he looks like, we have the opportunity to hear the story of Saul looking for lost donkeys with his servant. The story seems random except for the fact that it sets up the introduction of Saul and Samuel. In fact Saul thinks to return home after some time of looking and it is the servant that persuades him to keep trying, talk with the seer and in fact the servant has to provide the money or offering that they will give the seer. We see in the story the providential guiding by God in the different elements of the story. As Saul and the servant enter the town they are told that Samuel, the seer has just arrived. “Again the overruling of providence is evident, for the two travelers have arrived just in time for a feast at which, unaware of is as they are, Saul will be the guest of honor.” (David Toshio Tsumura, The First book of Samuel)!

God’s manifest presence and his providence work together in a mysterious combination. God is about to manifest himself and the new king of his choosing. He does so by working in mysterious behind-the-scenes ways of providence. Saul has been sent to look for his father’s donkeys, but in fact Saul finds out that God is seeking him out and that Samuel has been sent to find him.

A Study of the Manifest Presence of God in 1 Samuel 9:15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: 16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me.” 17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! It is he who shall restrain my people.” 18 Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, “Tell me where is the house of the seer?” 19 Samuel answered Saul, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind. 20 As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father's house?” 21 Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin?
Why then have you spoken to me in this way?” 22 Then Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited, who were about thirty persons. 23 And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Put it aside.’” 24 So the cook took up the leg and what was on it and set them before Saul. And Samuel said, “See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed, that you might eat with the guests.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day. 25 And when they came down from the high place into the city, a bed was spread for Saul on the roof, and he lay down to sleep. 26 Then at the break of dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Up, that I may send you on your way.” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street. 27 As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to pass on before us, and when he has passed on, stop here yourself for a while, that I may make known to you the word of God.”
“This section proves the whole business of choosing Saul was ordered by God’s will and guided by his providence. Each step of Saul’s journey to search for the donkeys was directed by the hand of the Lord. Except for Samuel, nobody, including Saul, knew about God’s decision to choose Saul as the prince over his people Israel.” “In chapter 8 it was Samuel who informed the Lord of the people’s demand for a king; here it is the Lord who takes the initiative in informing Samuel of Saul’s coming. On both occasions, Samuel as the prophet is the intermediary between the people and the Lord—representing both.” ( David Toshio Tsumura, The First book of Samuel)!

Samuel hears directly from Yahweh that he will meet Saul tomorrow and anoint him as prince over Israel. Samuel is told that he will anoint Saul. Anointing is a sign that you are especially chosen for a divine assignment. Priests are anointed and now as Israel readies herself for her first king it is determined by God that the kings of Israel will be anointed as part of the kingly ritual or ceremony. !

Immediately upon seeing Saul, Samuel heard from the Lord, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! It is he who shall restrain my people.”(v. 17) Samuel heard from the Lord about the call on Saul’s life but Saul is clueless. Saul is seeking for the seer, Samuel, to help him find the donkeys. Samuel tells Saul, don’t worry about the donkeys while you are seeking them for you are the most desirable person that everyone in Israel wants to meet. Saul is overwhelmed and asks how can that be, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel?” (v.21)!

Samuel has planned this official meal inviting thirty people in preparation for the prince that Yahweh is calling to rule. Samuel knowing that the approximate time that a Benjamite who would be king was coming had asked the cook to set aside a preferred cut of meat for the special guest who would soon arrive.”This was a wellprepared and planned official meal for Saul with thirty representatives of the people, even though to Saul and his servant, their presence looked almost accidental.” (David Toshio Tsumura, The First book of Samuel) Samuel explains that the meal and guests are for Saul’s arrival,“See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed, that you might eat with the guests.” Not only was a dinner prepared but a place to sleep was arranged for for Saul. ! Today’s reading closes with Saul telling Samuel that he has a word from God that he needs to make known to Saul.

A Study of the Manifest Presence of God in 1 Samuel 10:1 And Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage. 2 When you depart from me today, you will meet two men by Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now your father has ceased to care about the donkeys and is anxious about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?”’ 3 Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the oak of Tabor. Three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. 4 And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand. 5 After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will
meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. 7 Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you. 8 Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.” 9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. 10 When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 And a man of the place answered, “And who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.
Our text begins with Samuel anointing Saul by pouring out a flask of oil upon him. Samuel kisses Saul and also prophesies over him, “The Lord has anointed you to be prince over his people Israel. And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies.” (v. 1)!

“The transformation of Saul from an unassuming youth to the king-designate is certainly a drastic change for him personally, but it is also revolutionary for the nation. Such radical claims and actions as Samuel has taken will require dramatic confirmation. In order to meet these needs, Samuel prophesies three events that will happen to Saul on his return home, which will confirm his selection at least privately(10:2-7). 1. At Zelzah near Rachel’s tomb, two strangers will report to Saul that the lost donkeys have been located and that his father is worried about his safety.(10:3) 2.Three men near Tabor will greet him and offer him bread (10:3-4) 3. At Gibeah he will be met by a group of prophets playing musical instruments. The spirit of Yahweh will come upon him, he will join them in their prophesying, and he will be ‘changed into a different person.’ (10:6). Samuel concludes these signs of confirmation with a command to wait for seven days at Gilgal to receive further instructions. Samuel’s signs are confirmed as soon as Saul leaves. God gave Saul another heart. And all the signs that Samuel prophesied came to pass that day. Saul had the Spirit of God rush upon him, and he was able to prophesy. Saul has been thoroughly transformed by the events of the past day. Not only is Saul transformed but the nation, though they have not been able to witness the confirming signs, will also go through a drastic transformation in seven days when Saul comes before Samuel again.

A Study of the Manifest Presence of God in 1 Samuel 14 Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” And he said, “To seek the donkeys. And when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.” 15 And Saul's uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16 And Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.” But about the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel had spoken, he did not tell him anything. 17 Now Samuel called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah. 18 And he said to the people of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ 19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.” 20 Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its clans,
and the clan of the Matrites was taken by lot; and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.” 23 Then they ran and took him from there. And when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, “Long live the king!” 25 Then Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the kingship, and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home. 26 Saul also went to his home at Gibeah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
“The Lord was with Samuel and let none of his words fall to the ground.” Samuel was a prophet and his words would of course been of great interest to Saul’s uncle. More interesting than the uncle’s interest in the soon to be king’s reticence. Saul does not lie to his uncle, but he told him nothing about the aspects of being King that Samuel had spoken about.!

As Samuel had done in chapter 7 he once again calls all the people of Israel together at Mizpah. He is about to inaugurate Saul as King. It is surprising then how he begins his address with a prophetic word of judgement. Samuel reminds the people of their history with Yahweh. He led them out of Egypt and delivered them from Egypt and from all those who came against them. Samuel makes a strong prophetic judgement, “Today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’”(v. 19). After such a devastating judgement, Samuel begins the process of choosing a king.!

“Samuel walked Israel through the process of the lot; he began with all the tribes until the elimination narrowed down to one man; Saul (v. 20-21). Yahweh used the lot to disclose his will (Proverbs 16:33). What Yahweh had disclosed privately to Samuel (9:15-17) he now declared publicly to Israel (10:20-21). Saul’s secret anointing is now confirmed in his public selection.” (Dale Ralph Davis, 1 Samuel)!

Saul is declared king but he definitely does not take center stage in the passage. Though his name was chosen by lot, “when they sought him, he could not be found.” Just as the Lord had revealed to Samuel that Saul was to be king again it is God who reveals where Saul has hidden. When Saul is located and he stands before the crowd it is his height that impresses the crowd. “And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, “Long live the king!” (v.24)!

Samuel tells the people the legal responsibilities and obligations of the king. Samuel then writes them in a book. Samuel then places the book, an important spiritual and legal document in the Sanctuary. Samuel has been announced publicly as King. There needs to be some formal understanding for both king and his subjects of what the new rules will be for the monarchy. “Hence this agreement was not only announced verbally by Samuel but also written down and officially deposited at the sanctuary. As seen below, though most people gladly accepted the new king, there were some people who would not acknowledge the institution of monarchy under Saul.” (David Toshio Tsumura, The First book of Samuel)!

Samuel sent the people home and Saul returned to his own home. Some good men were touched by God followed him and some worthless men despised him. The passage says that Saul kept his peace.

Saul is God’s g@acious answer to the people’s demand for a king. God in His g@ace gives them what they ask for. Saul int@oduces the idea of King to the Israelites. Mark Baterson writes in, Draw the Circle, “My prayer ba_ing average is no be_er than anyone else’s. I swing and miss all the time, but I have deterjined that I’m going to ‘go down swinging’. Even when a prayer isn’t answered the way I want, I have a peace that passes understanding because I know that God heard me. It just means that the answer is no. And I’ve learSed to praise God when the answer is no, not just when the answer is yes. It simply means I’m asking for the wrong thing or for the wrong reason or at the wrong time. And I’m convinced that the day will come when we thank God for the prayers He did not answer as much as the ones He did because He had a be_er answer. And the best answer is verl rarely what is most convenient or comforKable for us. The best answer is always what brings God the most glorl.”

A Study of the Manifest Presence of God in 1 Samuel 11:1 Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” 2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.” 3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days' respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” 4 When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud. 5 Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh. 6 And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. 7 He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the
territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out as one man. 8 When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9 And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” 11 And the next day Saul put the people in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
“Saul has not yet acted as King. He has been anointed by oil and the Spirit of God. He has been publicly acclaimed and confirmed as king. Even in this narrative, where he gets his first opportunity to function as king, he arrives from the fields looking every bit the farmer and hardly a reigning monarch (‘returning from the fields, behind his oxen,’ 11:5). But now he rises to the occasion and functions as king splendidly. He becomes Israel’s ‘savior’ and delivers the nation from oppression and bondage. Indeed, this chapter revolves around the theme of deliverance. Deliverance is the driving question of the elders of Jabesh Gilead at the beginning (11:3), is the promise of the new king at the center (11:9) and the happy conclusion of the matter(11:13)”. (Bill T. Arnold, 1 & 2 Samuel)! Nahash was the king of the Ammonites. Historical information about Nahash tells us that he has attacked and oppressed the tribes of Gad and Reuben. In this instance he has besieged the city, Javesh-gilead. The elders of the city attempt to make a treaty with Nahash. He not only wants to take control of the city, but he desires to humiliate, disgrace and utterly control the people. His response is that he will make a treaty with them and then gouge out all of their right eyes. “Mutilation of captives was not uncommon in antiquity, but this may have also been a way of ensuring these troops would never again wage war by impairing their aim in battle.” (Bill T. Arnold, 1 & 2 Samuel)! The elders of Jabesh respond, “Give us seven days' respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” Nahash is arrogant enough to agree to their terms and sees this as an opportunity to humiliate all of Israel. When the report comes to Saul and the rest of Israel they weep out loud.! Saul receives the report as he is coming back from the field. As was stated earlier, he seems more of a farmer at this moment than a king. But upon hearing the news the “Spirit of God rushed upon him” and awakens a righteous anger in him. “In chapter 10, the coming of the Spirit was a temporary blessing intended to confirm Saul as the anointed of Yahweh. He temporarily rejoiced with a local band of prophets. But in this passage, the text uses nearly identical phraseology as in Judges (Othniel, Gideon, Jephthah,& Samson). The Spirit fills the judge with divine indignation and empowers him for military service. The earlier Spiritempowerment of Saul was temporary, but this one is apparently more permanent, continuing until Samuel anoints David as Saul’s replacement. God’s Spirit in the Old Testament empowers the recipient for leadership as prophet, king, or army general.” (Bill T. Arnold, 1 & 2 Samuel)! Saul cuts up the oxen and sends pieces of the animals with messengers to all of Israel. Saul wisely not only uses his name as newly appointed king but also invokes the name of Samuel to garner the troops he needs to go to battle. God was not only with Saul but he also was with the message that Saul sent. Saul was able to raise 330,000 men in Israel and Judah.! Verses 9-11 give us the details of the battle. The messengers gave the news to the elders of Jabesh-gilead, Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have salvation. Salvation and deliverance is the theme of this passage. The men of Jabesh agreed to the plan and submitted their future into the hands of Saul and his troops. Saul sent three companies of men against he Ammonites to attack right at dawn and by the heat of the day the Israelites had a victory. Samuel had heard from God and anointed Saul as King. The battle in this text is Saul’s first test as king.The victory established the respect and love of the people for Saul.

A Study of the Manifest Presence of God in 1 Samuel The Kingdom Is Renewed! 11:12 Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13 But Saul said, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.” 14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.! Samuel's Farewell Address! 12:1 And Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have obeyed your voice in all that you have said
to me and have made a king over you. 2 And now, behold, the king walks before you, and I am old and gray; and behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day. 3 Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? After Saul’s military victory and his kingship were confirmed to all the people in Israel, a question arose about those who had opposed Saul during his ordination as king at Mizpah. Verse 10:27, “But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But Saul held his peace.” Their attack on Saul was remembered in verse 12 and some sought to put those who had opposed Saul to death. Saul, who held his peace in chapter 10, does the same at the end of chapter 11 telling the people in verse13, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.” Again the theme of chapter 11 is God’s salvation of his people, and Saul states this theme, reiterating that it would be wrong to put anyone to death on a day of salvation. ! Samuel uses the military victory as a way of calling all the people together at Gilgal to once again recognize Saul as King. “The purpose of this occasion at Gilgal seems to be to confirm Saul’s kingship, which has been formally known though lacking demonstration. It was necessary for all the people to acknowledge Saul as the king of Israel before the Lord. If the election of Saul as king at Mizpah was political, the (re)confirmation of Saul as king at Gilgal would be religious, that is, before the Lord. In any official matter, both political and religious affirmations were necessary. So the ‘renewal’ confirmed the religious dimension of the kingship of Saul… (v. 15 the term all the people) Here the term “all” appears twice; it emphasizes that the entire population of Israel now agreed to recognize Saul as the king of Israel since he proved himself to be worthy to be their true leader.” (David Toshio Tsumura, The First Book of Samuel)! Samuel addresses the people of Israel.The speech is transitioning Samuel out of leadership as a judge. Samuel says, “I have walked before you”. Using the past tense shows that the time of Samuel as judge and the period of all the judges is now ending. He then says of Saul the king, “And now, behold, the king walks before you”. The use of the present tense shows that the future of Saul and the kings is moving forward. ! Samuel introduces his speech to all of Israel by asserting that he has given the people a king as they have asked for. He then tells them that from his youth until now, he has walked before them as God’s anointed. He questions them, can anyone testify against me that I have taken anything or defrauded or oppressed anyone? Then, Samuel makes his point even stronger, “The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.” The people respond back quickly, “He is witness.”! Before all of Israel, Samuel speaks first of his innocence of taking anything from them. This argument is a set up for the rest of his speech, where he tells them how Yahweh has again and again saved them and delivered them despite their sinfulness and yet, they ask for another deliverer.

A Study of the Manifest Presence of God in 1 Samuel 12:6 And Samuel said to the people, “The Lord is witness, who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt. 7 Now therefore stand still that I may plead with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous deeds of the Lord that he performed for you and for your fathers. 8 When Jacob went into Egypt, and the Egyptians oppressed them, then your fathers cried out to the Lord and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place. 9 But they forgot the Lord their God. And he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab. And they fought against them. 10 And they cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. But now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, that we may serve

Samuel gives the Israelites a history lesson. He reminds them of the many, many times when they have needed the deliverance of Yahweh. He begins by reminding them of the events surrounding Moses and Aaron and their deliverance from Egypt. He pleads with them and tells them to stand still and listen. They need the wisdom that comes from learning from the past as they move forward into the future. Samuel is making an emotional appeal. He is entreating the Israelites to listen at this crucial time, remembering the deliverances of the past, and the faithfulness of God as they take this next step as a nation. ! Part of the history lesson includes the stories of Sisera, Jerubbaal, Gideon, Barak, Jephthah and Samuel from the epoch of the judges. “Samuel reminds in particular the judges period in order to show that regardless of how far short their ancestors fell, Yahweh never abandoned them. The cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and judge-provided deliverance was oft repeated and had, in fact, preserved the nation. Now this current generation of Israelites had grown dissatisfied with the theocratic system, just as their ancestors had grown tired of the manna in the desert.(Numbers 11:4-6)”! “So Samuel drives home their choice. He forces them to face the reality of a human king as opposed to the divinely provided judge-deliverers. Verse 13 is the hinge or central theme of the chapter. It is as if Samuel were saying, ‘Here you are!’ This is the king you have chosen. You asked for him and you got him! Yahweh has given him to you’. They have indeed received a king, but he comes with divine restrictions. He can never really be like a Canaanite ruler, which is not in their best interests anyway. Instead, this is the king that Yahweh has provided.” (Bill T. Arnold, 1 & 2 Samuel). ! When Israel was called as a nation, there were blessings and curses under the covenant provided through Moses. Samuel outlines the blessings and curses that come with them being a people under a king. The call on the Israelites is to fear the Lord, serve the Lord, obey his voice, and they must not rebel against God’s commandments. This call is upon the average Israelite and upon their king also. If these things take place then there will be blessing in Israel. “But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king.” (v. 15) So, just as Samuel had asked the Israelites to stand still and listen to him in v. 7, now Samuel asks them to stand still and watch what the Lord is about to do. ! The pleading entreaty that Samuel makes to the king and to the people is to fear the Lord, serve him and obey his commandments. “In other words, everything has changed and nothing has changed.” (Bill T. Arnold, 1 & 2 Samuel). Whether the judges or kings ruled Israel, this is still the call on people’s lives.

I will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.19 And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.” 20 And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 22 For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name's sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself. 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 24 Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you. 25 But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.”
“So now they had a king (v.13). The alternatives were clear for people and king; they would live faithfully under Yahweh’s word (v.14) or they would suffer justly under Yahweh’s hand (v. 15). Samuel’s emphasis falls, however, on Israel’s strenuous unbelief (v.12, And when you saw that Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the Lord your God was your king.) We needn’t face an Ammonite rampage to slip into a quiet attitude of Israelite unbelief. Whenever the latest crisis comes we quietly think, ‘In this he cannot provide; he has no provision for me in this.’ It is all very silent, private, low-key and faithless.” (Dale Ralph Davis, 1 Samuel)!

Samuel prepares the people for what God is about to do in verse 16,“Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes.” Yahweh is about to make a display before all of the people and he is confirming Samuel as his servant and mouthpiece at the same time. As Samuel, God’s prophet calls upon the Lord, God sends rain and thunder. “This harvest in ancient Israel fell during May and June, and it scarcely ever rained during this time. This demonstrates that Yahweh will continue to speak through prophets. Israel may have a new king and new political structure, but they must never neglect the word of the servants of Yahweh, the prophets.” (Bill T. Arnold, 1 & 2 Samuel)!

As the storm came, the people responded with fear and begged Samuel to pray for them. The strength of Samuel’s call to repentance was intensified by the confirmation of the word through a miraculous storm. The people beg Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.” (v. 19) Samuel responds to their pleas with assurances. Yes, God’s people have “done all this evil” but they have this opportunity now to turn towards the Lord and to follow him anew with all of their hearts. “They have acted wickedly, but they are not without hope. If they remain true to Yahweh, avoiding all idolatry, he will not reject them, because he was pleased to make Israel his own. Despite the new political system, Yahweh still wants the intimate relationship with Israel, but only under the old-covenant terms.” (Bill T. Arnold, 1 & 2 Samuel)!

Chapter 12 ends with Samuel reaffirming his responsibilities as a prophet before God and for the people. His heart for the people and for God is so clearly seen in v. 23, “Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you; I will instruct you in the good and the right way.” Samuel reiterates for the Israelites the blessings that await them if they serve the Lord with all of their heart and the destruction that awaits them if they disobey. The destruction will visit both the people and the king they have asked for, if they continue to disobey.

He is actively watching and waiting for us to simply take Him at His word. He is watching over Ma_hew 18:18. He is watching over Isaiah 59:21. He is watching over Luke 7:23. He is watching over each and everl promise and if that doesn’t fill you with holy confidence, nothing will. Praying hard is standing on the promises of God. sometimes pray as if God doesn’t want to keep His promises. You have no idea how badly God wants to keep His promise! That’s why He made the promise in the first place. We sometimes pray as if our bold prayers that circle the promises of God might offend the god who made them. Are you kidding me? God is offended by anyKhing less! There is nothing God wants to do more than prove His power by keeping His promises. But we doubt God because we doubt ourselves. Samuel acting as prophet, calls the people to circle around the promises of God. He promises that if they fear the Lord, serue the Lord, obey His voice, and do not rebel, they will see blessing. The king is under the same commands and promises as the people. God confirjs His command and promises that HE makes through Samuel by sending thunder and rain in a season which is almost always drl. The fear of the Lord falls upon the people and then they respond, not by commi_ing themselves to God’s promises, but instead they begin to repent and ask Samuel to intercede for them. They ask Samuel to circle them in prayer. (v. 19) Samuel ag@ees, “far be it dom me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you.”

Obedience comes with promises of blessing. Samuel joins the promise with a sigS, “Now therefore stand still and see this g@eat thing that the Lord will do before your eyes.” (v. 16) Reflect on this past week. Have you seen God doing anyKhing specific as you have prayed circles around your life?
