Editorial In this special edition we bring information and a step-by-step how to apply the Brazilian government program “Science without borders� applying to study at the University of East London - UEL. Moreover, we will give tips on what life is like for estudate in London, you will have to do in your free time and what facilities you can find on campus. This edition also includes information about our building sports and how to use it. With this, we hope to take all the doubts and uncertainties of the students and make clear that the UEL offers all the facilities that students need to have a great life and a great academic development. And that is why the UEL is one of the best British universities

How to apply for UEL by Science Without Borders UEL The University of East London is home to a thriving population of international students studying undergraduate and postgraduate at our London campuses. We have around 28,000 students from over 120 different countries around the world. Each year we welcome many new students from Brazil and across Latin America. We currently have around 160 Brazilian students on our Bachelor's and Master's courses – that's more than any other British university!

Science Without Borders Scholarship Scheme With around 160 students enrolled this year, UEL is the top recruiting university under the Brazilian government's Science Without Borders scholarship scheme. This generous scheme allows talented Brazilian students to study with us for a year of their undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree or PhD course, fully funded by the Brazilian government. The scheme is administered in Brazil by CAPES and CNPq, and is managed in England by Universities UK.

We also have places on PhD programmes under the Science Without Borders scheme. Students can take one year of their PhD with us then transfer back to their university in Brazil, or they can complete the whole PhD here at UEL. For more information, please email swb@uel.ac.uk.

What is covered by the scholarship? The Brazilian government allowance covers the following topics: your tuition fees; accommodation; a Welcome and Orientation programme including airport pick-up service; a programme of fun social events throughout your time at UEL;

English Language If you need to improve your English before joining the Science without Borders programme at UEL, you could be eligible to take ourpresessional English classes. Courses vary in length depending on what you need. The cost of the English course, including accommodation, is covered by your scholarship.

For direct entry into the main course of study with no English language training first, students must achieve the English language level required by UKBA: IELTS scores: listening 5.5, speaking 5.5, reading 5.5 and writing 5.5. TOEFL iBT scores: listening 17, reading 18, speaking 20 and writing 17.

Accommodation

Facilities

As a Science Without Borders student, you will normally be housed in our modern Docklands Campus. All rooms are single occupancy and are just a short walk from Cyprus DLR station, making it safe and easy for you to travel to Central London.

We are one of the top universities in the UK for investment per student in facilities. Our impressive and modern Docklands Campus was opened in 2000 and provides outstanding teaching and learning facilities. In addition, our Stratford Campus has seen several new additions in recent years, such as a computing centre, new clinical and laboratory facilities and our brand-new Stratford library.

Science Without Borders students will normally be placed in our West Halls. International students are given priority when we allocate accommodation and living on campus is a great way to start life in a new city – plus, it’s a good way to make new friends. Our Docklands Student Village is located along the exciting and rapidly developing Royal Albert Dock,with stunning views of the water, London City Airport and the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. All of our 1,200 rooms are single occupancy and include en-suite shower room including toilet, single bed, shelving, cupboard, desk, chair, telephone for incoming and internal calls and access to high-speed internet. Each flat has a shared living and kitchen area and there are two launderettes on site. Each international student staying in halls gets a bedding pack on arrival, which includes a duvet, pillow and bed sheets. There are also a number of studio rooms available to rent, which include a kitchenette.

Life at UEL We work hard to make sure that every Science Without Borders student has a great experience at UEL. When you arrive in London, we organise a comprehensive Welcome Programme comprising a range of social activities and practical information sessions. All of the trips are free of charge and are designed to help you make the most of your time as a UEL student.

15% SwB Alumni Discount As a thank you for having chosen UEL, the University has decided to offer all SwB students one of the most generous alumni discount schemes in the UK. All SwB students who have studied at UEL are eligible for a 15% discount on fees for subsequent study at Master’s or Doctoral level. There is no timeframe on the discount – students can come back at any time and take advantage of the scheme to further their studies.

How to apply for UEL Undergradute Applications for courses starting in February 2014 will open at the end of August 2013. Postgraduate Research (PhD) Please visit the Universities UK website for information on how to apply for these courses. You may also email us if you have any questions. You can also stay in touch with us on the UEL Science Without Borders Facebook page. Entry Requirements For detailed information on entry requirements for all UEL courses please see our course pages. We accept Brazilian qualifications at the appropriate level and also take any relevant work experience into account when considering an application. The standard of your application form, including your personal statement, is also important. Undergraduate degree courses To join one of our Bachelor’s degrees, we normally ask for students to have completed the Certificado de Conclusão

de Segundo Grau or the Certificado de Ensino Medio with grades of 7 or above. We also ask students to have one of the folowing: University Entrance Exam (for any recognised Brazilian university) with marks of 5 or above and ENEM with 55%. Postgraduate degree courses To join one of our Master’s programmes, we normally ask students to have a Bacherel, Licenciado or Professional Title with average grades of at least 6 out of 10. English Language Requirements To study at UEL you must demonstrate that your English level is high enough for university study. We accept a number of different Secure English Language Tests (SELT) for entry onto our degree courses, with IELTS being the most common. English language requirements vary slightly from subject to subject. All students are required to meet our standard English Language Requirements as follows: Undergraduate standard requirements The English Language entry requirement for undergraduate (Bachelor’s) programmes is a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or 6, or equivalent depending on the programme and year or level of entry. The specific requirements for your chosen programme, including individual component scores, would

be outlined as one of the academic conditions if you are made an offer. Postgraduate standard requirements The English language entry requirement for the majority of postgraduate (Master’s) programmes is IELTS 6.0 or 6.5, or equivalent depending on your chosen programme of study. Specific requirements for your chosen programme, including individual component scores, would be outlined as one of the academic conditions if you are made an offer. What if you do not meet the requirements? If you do not meet our English language requirements, you can apply to one of our pre-sessional English courses, which are specifically designed to prepare you with the language and study skills needed for academic study. If you pass the assessments on the Pre-sessional English language programme, you will be accepted onto your degree programme without the need to take IELTS or another SELT. Visa and immigration information As Brazil is a visa national country you will have to apply for a UK visa to come to study at UEL regardless of the length of time you expect to study in the UK. Student Visitor Visa The Student Visitor Visa is only for non-EEA visa national students coming to study a short course of less than six months (or less than 11 months for an

English language course). With this visa, you cannot work in the UK and cannot extend it from within the UK. To apply for a Student Visitor visa, you need to complete the VAF1D form issued by the UK Border Agency. Tier 4 student visa The Tier 4 Student visa is for all non-EEA students coming to study in the UK for over six months. To apply for this visa you need to fill the VAF9 and VAF9 Appendix 8: Tier 4 (General) forms and provide the requested supporting documents as specified in the Tier 4 guidance. You will also have to provide your CAS number from your Tier 4 sponsor (UEL), and your biometric features (10-digit finger scans and a digital photograph) in person as part of the application process. Please note your CAS number is provided by UEL after you have received an unconditional offer to study a full-time degree course at UEL. UEL’s International Student Advice pages has detailed information on Tier 4 visas and related issues such as bringing your family to the UK.

Campus Life Life as a UEL student is not all about studying for your degree. Whether you are living in student halls or off campus, there is always loads going on.

One of the things you’ll realise when you arrive on campus is that you are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat and drink. At Docklands we have several eateries, including Costa Coffee, the Baguette Company, The Edge (our student refectory, serving hot and cold food throughout the day), the Underground Bar, John Smith’s shop, Munch (the SportsDock café) and several other coffee bars and vending machines dotted around campus.

University study Use the library to get ahead Did you know that students who use their university library regularly from the beginning of their course are statistically more likely to get a first-class honours degree? Here are some top tips on how to get the best out of the library and out of your time at university. Sports Facilities

The University of East London offers students superb on- and off-campus sporting facilities and the best-possible access to sport and exercise. Our Docklands campus is home to our £21 million sports facility, SportsDock. This world-class sports centre is used by students, staff, the local community and national and international organisations – as demonstrated by the United States Olympic Committee’s decision to make SportsDock their official high-performance training headquarters for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games!

SportsDock is one of London’s largest indoor high-performance training centres and sports venues. It features: Two huge, multi-purpose indoor sports arenas. A fully equipped strength and conditioning room. Dance and aerobics studios. A 120-piece fitness centre. A sports therapy clinic A range of conferencing and meeting rooms, lecture theatres and teaching rooms. Outdoor pitches. A café.

SportsDock is open seven days a week and offers a range of competitive membership options and pay-as-you-go options. Is also a 'home-base' option for international athletes training between competitions, and hosts both short and long-term training camps across sporting disciplines. SportsDock is located on the Docklands campus and offers a full package including accommodation, catering, transport and sports science support. On-site experts can provide a range of advice and services insports therapy, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, lifestyle counselling, podiatry, biomechanics, nutrition, physiology and psychology. The Docklands campus also features a free outdoor gym located on the dockside, an outdoor basketball court and table tennis. UEL maintains good relationships with professional sports clubs and facilities in east London, including the Olympic Park, Memorial Park and West Ham Park, which allow our students use of the facilities and opportunities for competition, internships, coaching and volunteering.


January Open Day If you’re thinking of applying to UEL, attending an open day gives you a chance to absorb the atmosphere, find out more about courses you are interested in as well as course requirements and the admissions process. Each school will be represented and academic staff will be available for you to speak to and ask questions about the wide range of programmes and courses UEL offers. The open day in November will focus on course information and supporting applications for September 2014.

Campus Tours We offer campus tours on a regular basis throughout the year at both our Stratford and Docklands campuses. A campus tour will give you an insight into university life and showcase the facilities that the University offers. The tour includes the library, student residences and teaching areas and an optional Q & A session with a current student.
