-Unknown

The following portfolio includes projects in retail, residential, and hospitality design that I have designed in the last three years of my graduate studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. These projects represent conscious and thoughtful interior design that responds to the surrounding environment and community. This portfolio showcases my design esthetic as well as my skills in hand-drafting and digital rendering techniques. Thank you very much for you time.

Warmest regards, Gabriela Chavez

MFA THESIS

TREASURE ISLAND MARKETPLACE

PROJECT ABSTRACT My final thesis project involves the renovation of a historic airplane hangar situated on Treasure Island, San Francisco. Adaptive re-use being one of the significant components to sustainable design, I have transformed the 75 year-old airplane hangar into a public marketplace serving local residents and regional and international visitors. The marketplace includes retail spaces for local vendors, artists and farmers to sell crafts and produce, several bars and restaurants, a sailing center and a lobby showcasing the history of the island. Honoring the island’s rich and notable past, I have extended the island’s fascinating history to the project concept and design. My design concept signifies the industrial progression and trans-pacific travel that was occuring at the time this building was constructed. Utilizing sustainable principles and references from the building’s original time period, I have created a landmark of preservation, progress, and community. At the Treasure Island Marketplace, patrons will learn about the island’s history through the building’s design and be entertained by the multitude of local treasures residing throughout the building’s central nave.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

PALARCOS ECO RESORT

PROJECT ABSTRACT The Maya people have always been revered for their incredible knowledge of the earth, its resources and where it lies in the universe. The inspiration behind the design of the Palarcos Eco Resort comes from the architectural proficiency and cosmological understanding the Maya people themselves incorporated into their own design. Guests of the Palarcos Resort will experience what it might have been like to live in a Maya palace and witness the passing of seasons marked by the sunset. The interiors were inspired by the Spanish style seen throughout neighboring Antigua. The fusion of arch types visible throughout the resort represent the fusion of the Spanish culture with the Maya culture. Palarcos tells its guests to story of an ancient civilization through its very own buildings, gardens and santuaries.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

THE MONTICELLI RESIDENCE

PROJECT ABSTRACT This project involves the design of the Monticelli Residence in Marin County, California. The design is influenced by the Spanish Mediterranean Coast which is adored for its fresh turquoise waters, warm rocky beaches and fresh ceviche. For the Monticelli Residence, I used the masterpiece by Salvador Dali, Muchacha en la Ventana, as the central concept for my design, of which I pulled the contrast of warm and cool colors from the background and extended them to the project’s finishes and materials. The colors and pearlescent nature of the abalone shell aslo unfluenced my design, as experienced through the light iridescent window treatments and satin upholstered elements.

SPATIAL DESIGN

ALISON BERGER GLASSWORKS STUDIO

15

PROJECT ABSTRACT This Spatial Design project involves the design of artist, Alison Berger’s glass blowing studio and living space at 138 South Park in the SOMA district of San Francisco. The design is influenced by her own inspiration from antiques and old world instruments. The spaces in this project are comprised of vintage furnishings, apothecary decor and rich finishes. Some finishes include reclaimed wood, vintage glass tiles and a recycled glass concrete composite. The concept behind this design is heat itself and the high temperatures produced from it, creating vibrant indigo blues and crimsom oranges and producing timeless pieces.
