Gabriela Corral Graphic Design Portfolio Update till June 2017 1

hola

My name is Gabriela Corral, I was born in a little city called Cuenca in Ecuador. In 2013 I earned a Bachelor in Graphic Design from the ‘Universidad del Azuay’ in Ecuador, and in February 2017 I graduated as a Master of Creative Direction from the Pforzheim University in Germany. Now I’m working as a freelancer, next to my personal projects and “Ki,” my product brand. I work to have every project that I participate on to be unique, innovative and holistic, with a combination of investigation, experimentation, and theory. The final goal is to provide the client an innovative and tailor-made project. As a graphic designer, I have worked in corporate image, branding, illustration, pattern design, visual merchandising, basic product design, as well as guiding startups through the process of getting off the ground. As a creative director, I have worked on projects in my master’s course for clients as notable as Audi, Bosch, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Melitta using Design Thinking. In our workshops for the projects the teams were built from designers of differing expertise, as well as communicators with the clients, resulting in innovative products and services focused on the future. As a designer, I appreciate and desire to challenge myself, to experiment in new fields, and to be constantly learning and on the move. I love to be in contact with people from around the world who hold differing points of views. For me, it is important to work in an environment of collaboration, respect, honesty, tolerance and empathy. Below you can see some of my work.

Welcome to my portfolio!

Repositioning Campaign of Cajas National Park Azuay University, Graduation Thesis Date: November 2012 - July 2013 City: Cuenca, Ecuador Area: Graphic designing, branding, advertising, packaging, product design, patterns and morphological design. Applications: educational campaign, souvenirs, advertising, packaging, stand, teasers, billboards, videos, and pictures.

“El Cajas” National Park is a nature reserve located 30 km from the city of Cuenca. It is in the Western Cordillera of southern Ecuadorian Andes. Its area is 28,544 hectares, and it is between 3,160 and 4,450 meters above sea level. The ecosystem is composed by 253 permanent lagoons, 300 lagoons in wet weather, 767 water bodies, 163 lakes larger than one hectare and 604 smaller lakes less than one hectare. In 2013, it was declared a biosphere reserve and, in 1996, a National Park of Ecuador by UNESCO. It is also considered a “protection-zone,” which is a wilderness area that stands out for its flora, fauna, endemic species, scientific, educational, scenic and recreational properties. It also provides 60% of Cuenca’s water. The repositioning campaign of the Cajas National Park was born from a conversation with the biologist José Cáceres, who explained that most of the local tourists damage the natural reserve and misuse the material provided at the beginning of their visit because there is no respect or knowledge of how to behave properly within Cajas. Most tourists know Cajas, they know it plays an important role, but they do not know why. This advertising campaign is aimed at informing all the visitors and locals of the importance of Cajas

National Park. With the information provided by stakeholders, I decided to design a campaign where the main channel of communication is souvenirs. Park biologists helped me to select 15 icons that represented the fauna, flora, and water of Cajas. The campaign’s target are youth and adults between 18 and 34 years of age selected because they represent the largest number of people who visit the nature reserve, and also because they are a group that influences both the conceptions of children and older adults. The graphics used for the souvenirs were designed based on the morphology of each icon and their respective colors. The final product will be presented in an informative packaging, and will explain the importance of each icon and their families. For example, the Andean Toucan will present its own characteristics, as well as information about all the other birds of the Cajas’ ecosystem. The composition in the packaging and publicity are simple with infographics written with a clear message. The packaging has a QR code that links the product with Cajas’ social networks, where the campaign is also going to be transmitted. The primary means of promotion and dissemination are Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and Twitter.

FĂŠTE DE LA MUSIQUE 2014 Client: Alliance Française Date: May - June 2014 City: Cuenca, Ecuador Area: Graphic design, branding, illustration, typography and chromatic. Applications: poster, teasers, banners, badges, handbills, and shirts. In 2014 my poster won the music festival poster competition. The central concepts were music, joy, and movement. The goal was to create a versatile image that could be adapted to different platforms. Therefore, I designed an image composed of a lot of little musical instruments, where the constant was the color, and the variant was the composition depending on the type of application.

Client: Mayu Date: 2015 Location: Cuenca, Ecuador Area: Corporate image, branding, pattern design & illustration Applications: menus, sandwich flags, signage, sandwich wrap paper, business cards, receipts, stickers & invitation design. Mayu is a smokehouse located in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The owners wanted a simple and clean image that represents their natural and artisanal products. Mayu means river in Quechua (a Native South American language family spoken primarily in the Andes), and this is why I used for the imagotype a winding line representing a wave. In order to minimize costs in a long term production, the main color, a brown pantone, was used for most of all its applications like the sandwich wrap paper, business cards and the menu. Other complementary colors like orange, red and turquoise were used for other web applications. The graphic design, the restaurant environment and the quality of its products made Mayu gain a lot of customers and positioning in the city’s food scene.

Client: Maria Fernanda Rivera Date: February - March 2015 Location: Cuenca - Ecuador Area: Illustration and graphic design Applications: Cd, invitation cards and posters. María Fernanda Rivera is an Ecuadorian singer who has been producing and composing music for about 14 years. Much of her work has been done with the group “Voices and Guitars.” In 2013, she began her solo career, and after a year of work, she released her first album titled ‘Fearless.’ The album is a collection of Latin American flavors, beats, and melodies. The singer wanted the CD to reflect the environment in which she grew up: the countryside, mountains, houses and animals that represent the cultural identity of María Fernanda; therefore, the aesthetic was inspired based upon Latin American textiles, colors, and the singer’s environment.

Grafisum is the second largest printing shop in Cuenca. It provides printing services from small, to medium and large scales. They were looking for a product to show the potential of the technology that the company has: hot stamping, selective coatings, and selective Glitter lacquers, dyes, metallic and neon colors, among others. Therefore, we created a calendar inspired in the company’s isotype peacock. Detailed illustrations allowed us to play and show all the technology of their Offset Printers. The idea was conceived as a whole, while the illustrations were my responsibility.

Client: María Paz Palacios Date: April 2017 Location: Cuenca, Ecuador Area: Corporate image, branding & pattern design Applications: Wrapping paper, wall menu, menu, pins The inauguration of “Containers Park Cuenca” was in April, 2017. It’s a place where restaurants in containers share space in a chill atmosphere. One of them is María Bonita, Mexican food. The owner was looking for an image that represents Mexico, but not in a cliché way, without piñatas, cactus, skulls or any kind of Mexican icon. That is why, after research and many sketches, I designed a logo inspired by the way Mexicans make their traditional celebratory paper flags, which are always filled with details. This logo was also the inspiration to create patterns for the rest of the restaurant’s applications.

Applications: Body lotion, body butter, and hand cream labels. Annoa is a cosmetics company that sells products for facial treatments. In 2014 they expanded their market and launched a new line of products for daily use like hand creams, butter and body milk, which were focused for mass sales. The aesthetic that they used was clean and elegant, but they wanted something different and eye catching because the new line was designed to be products that could be used for everyday use, as well as being good for gifting. The products have five different fragrances: orange blossom, magnolia, freesia, iris, and acacia. Each scent is aimed at a different target. I designed an organic, delicate and dynamic aesthetic. The colors were selected based off the tone of each flower with additional complementary colors to create contrast and harmony.

They characterized to always use natural products, that’s why the image was based on nature, specifically flowers. The visual merchandising had to adapt to their infrastructure and furniture, so I designed giant flowers that were held from the ceiling in different depths creating a nice and colorful environment to the shop. I designed many patterns in order to have variety. This image was applied in cosmetic bags, a complement of their products, and also shopping bags and signs. PACHANGA 2/4

Pachanga Azuay University Project Date: November 2012 - February 2013 City: Cuenca, Ecuador Area: Graphic design, branding, packaging & advertising. Applications: Photos, video, packaging, business cards, gift cards, pins, bags, posters, teasers, hat labels and advertising for social networking. Team: Sofía Bustamante & Gabriela Corral Pachanga was a college project carried out during my Graphic Design degree. The purpose was to identify a social problem within the city of Cuenca and to try to solve it with a visual proposal. One of the issues that interested us was the loss of cultural identity of young people because of globalization. We chose to work with the straw hat, a unique piece of Cuenca and Ecuadorian culture. The straw hat is a hand-woven good which accompanies the traditional dress of the Cuenca community. However, this object is no longer used as a cultural property by the people as it is commercialized as a craft for use by foreigners and sold mainly to tourists. Therefore, we were interested in rescuing the symbolic use of this hat, and we designed a brand aimed at the young university population in Cuenca. The concept was formed by taking into consideration four characteristics that we think define the Cuencan youth: movement, rhythm, change and transformation. That is why we chose the brand name “Pachanga” which in Cuencano culture is an expression that refers to festivity and joy. This concept characterized our proposal and its applications. We designed the logo based on an abstraction of the hat in an “op-art” style because we wanted a dynamic brand that allowed us to freely play with the applications. We divided the market into three groups: “Classic” for those who chose casual and traditional dressing without following a marked tendency; “Pop” for those who are riskier and do not like to go unnoticed and are usually attracted to bright colors; and “Trendy” for those who follow fashion and seek to be the first to purchase something new. We designed the graphic proposal according to the color and style of each group. To publicize the product, we conducted an advertising video with the participation of 150 university students and made around 30 photographs with models. Many young people welcomed the hats, and, though it was a college project, the brand gained a well-regarded status position, the target identified with the product, and we sold a lot of hats.
