Reflections and inspirations...

For us at Better Interiors, the highlight of 2016 was certainly the reintroduction of some of our past slugs — 9to5, Off the Shelf, Clip Service and Double Duty — which helped us to present you with some fantastic office, retail and leisure projects. We’ve had a blast hunting for these gems month-on-month, and your letters and emails conveyed that you have enjoyed reading them thoroughly. This month too, we have a bouquet of terrific (to say the least) projects lined-up in our Centrestage, with six distinctive and inspiring spaces on offer. There are three gorgeous homes featured in the Habitat section— the Kundli project where Essentia Environments has created a generous, lavish and modern getaway for three generations of a family at Sonipat, Haryana; an eclectic 3,500 sq ft apartment showcasing varied materials and textures by Design Inc in Mumbai; and the spatial planning and interior design of a mock apartment in Ahmedabad by firm OpenIdeas where each handpicked piece of furniture, accessory and artwork along with the materials used would help capture the imagination and investment of a potential buyer for the Advance Group. The beautiful stylized compositions captured by photographer Monika Sathe was the perfect cover for this last issue of 2016.

I am most excited to present the three spaces we feature in the 9to5, Off the Shelf and Space&Spice slugs — each one is well thought of and beautifully executed. Called the Thousand Files project by MYVN Architecture, the modern and straight-forward design of the Salesworth Synergies LLP office in Bangalore has the humble shelving unit hogging all the limelight. A night walk in Frankfurt under a starry night sky was the primary design inspiration for interior designer Rohit Suraj of Urban Zen when he was given the responsibility to create a showroom for German furniture brands, Rolf Benz, Hulsta and Hacker, in New Delhi. But for Zeppelin Design and Environments LLP, the task at hand was to reinvent the wheel in a modern context — a contemporary spin on the colonial interiors of the legendary United Coffee House in New Delhi is now housed at Noida and goes by the name of United Coffee House Rewind. How can we let you go without some Christmas and New Year cheer? We have laid out a feast in the Bazaar pages, don’t miss it. So feast, dance and have the time of your life... but also drop a line with your feedback for this year. And before I sign off, here’s wishing all of you Merry Christmas and a very happy, prosperous, stylish and design-filled 2017! Deepa Nair Editor

As we close the door on 2015, lets take a look at what the design industry experts are saying about the coming year. As modern life gets busier and more pressured, our homes have become our sanctuaries. Centered around simplicity, serenity and seamlessness, the 2016 interior reflects our need to switch off and detox. Warm but calming colors are complimented by natural textures and soft shapes while furniture is becoming ever more tailored and intuitive, both at home and in the office.

70s-Inspired 1970s-inspired furnishings are set to make a comeback in 2016 according to New York-based hospitality designer and entrepreneur Stacy Garcia. "The relaxed, free-spirited nature of that era has been attractive to the fashion industry and has quickly moved towards interiors as well. Many design elements of the 70s were bold, raw and globally-fueled, as a response to the changing social and political environment of that time." Stacy Garcia’s Calabasas furniture collection for D’Style takes its design cues from the wanderlust of the global traveler and the boldness of the 1970’s nonconformist. Musician Lenny Kravitz turned his hand to furniture design in 2015 when he paired with CB2 to launch his debut line of furniture, lighting and accessories. Inspired by 1970s New York club culture, the 20-piece collection features polished metals, bold geometric patterns, walnut and sheepskin. Modern History The flooring of United Coffee House Rewind comprises striking custommade ceramic tiles with Victorianstyle designs that have been given a contemporary appearance with hues of white, blue and yellow.

At the United Coffee House Rewind gastropub in Noida, Zeppelin Design Environments LLP combine colonial charm with a modern aesthetic, offering a fresh take on the 70-year heritage of its flagship, New Delhi's legendary United Coffee House. sections, painted in the same arresting aqua, and glass panels. The doors include frosted panelling etched with designs reminiscent of Victorian tiles. As you step in, your eye is immediately drawn to the gorgeous custom-made ceramic tile flooring from Keramos. While the design of the tiles draws inspiration from the Victorian era, the palette of white along with the signature aqua and yellow of the UCH Rewind branding ensures the space feels fresh and vibrant.

Founded in 1942 at New Delhi’s Connaught Place, the swish United Coffee House has long been a haunt for bureaucrats, businessmen and artists who congregated amidst its colonial interiors over a leisurely cup of in-house coffee blends and extensive food menu that today includes Raj era staples as well as popular dishes from the ’30s to the

brand design for a holistic solution that’s in keeping with their clients’ requirements. That the gastropub is its predecessor’s modern cousin is instantly recognizable from a cursory glance at the menu where a Sitara Phool Aur Paani Puri Mojito can be accompanied by Lotus Stem Chips and Water Chestnuts or Pav Bhaji Fondue and Sriracha sauce finds its way into the Chili Chicken. “The main challenge,” says Som of the five-month-long project, “lay in

’70s. Over 70 years since its inception, the legacy of this United Group flagship has now made its way to the burgeoning satellite city of Noida in a decidedly modern avatar — the United Coffee House Rewind (UCH Rewind) gastropub, located at the DLF Mall of India. “The client wanted a reinterpretation of the brand that would make it more relevant to this day and age. He also wanted to preserve some of the nostalgia that the flagship restaurant at Connaught Place enjoys,” says Som Sengupta, founder and director of Delhi-based firm Zeppelin Design and Environments LLP, who was approached by

interpreting the ambience in a young, casual way while retaining the old colonial charm of the flagship. We remixed old-world Victorian designs with the contemporary industrial trend to create the UCH Rewind design language.” A wooden panel on the left side of the facade holds the brand’s signage that comprises a palette of deep aqua and sunshine yellow, which were chosen for their youthfulness and fresh appeal. Inspired by Victorian glasshouses, the striking facade offers visitors a preliminary hint of the modern meets old-world aesthetic with a combination of mild steel

wooden benches with cushioned seating that seem like a luxe take on those found in canteens. Panels of colourful ceramic tiles incorporated on each table top here add a bit of playfulness to the otherwise austere seating, while an exposed

brick wall and light fixtures shaped like birdcages offer old-world charm. To the left, the seating appears slightly less casual, with circular booths upholstered in cream and round tables and chairs. “The furniture was inspired by bistro furniture of the early ’20s, but we veered towards a more minimal look as the design simultaneously needed to reflect present-day sensibilities,” informsSom. At the far end of the restaurant lies a partially open kitchen and bar, placed adjacent to each

extension to the open kitchen and we ensured continuity of the look with bespoke blue Victorian tiles on the backsplash and beveled white subway tiles in the front,” explains Som. aesthetic that’s de rigueur today. Adding finishing touches to the design are a series of framed woodcut illustrations that depict vignettes

of colonial life as well as replicas of curios that would typically have been found in 20th-century homes or clubs, arranged along the restaurant’s walls and pillars painted in vibrant green and yellow. With astute attention to detail — right from the preliminary branding to interior design — Som and his team at Zeppelin Design and Environments LLP have ensured the longevity of the United Coffee House legacy by offering a modern spin while paying homage to its signature elements. The result is a restaurant that is vibrant and laidback and yet an elegant and chic reminder of a bygone era.

Splashes of yellow on the columns, green on the walls and bright blue Victorian tiles on the bar and open kitchen add a dose of energy to the otherwise muted decor.

The ceiling is an unusual combination of wooden panelling with an elegant chandelier surrounded by exposed ducts, thus juxtaposing old-world charm against the modern industrial aesthetic that’s currently on trend.

Circular booths form a slightly more formal seating section. Framed woodcut prints depicting vignettes of colonial life along with replicas of curios found in 20th-century homes and clubs offer a reminder of United Coffee House’s origins.
