GABRIEL BERNING ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
“I watch their images flicker Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams But dreams don’t need to have motion To keep their spark alive Obsession has to have action Pride turns on the drive.”
-Rush. “Mission.” Lyrics by Neil Peart.

URBAN GARDENER COMMUNITY Part of a studio project based around South Cumminsville in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Urban Gardener Community was designed to serve the needs of existing and prospective urban gardeners in the area. In addition to housing units, the site provides small lots for growing produce as well as social spaces for interaction. I utilized Revit for the first time in a studio project and experimented with passive design strategies for cooling, ventilation, and social interaction in this fourth year studio project.

MIXED-USE BUILDING Designed to serve multiple purposes, this project, located on the southeast side of the University of Cincinnati’s campus contains twenty residential units, a restaurant, a weight room, and a social area. Design strategies included staggering the units to display individuality and open the interiors daylighting, and mirroring the topography to create space below the building for parking and shade. In the end this project utilized most of my software skills as well as model-making during my third year at UC.

ATHENAEUM
Site Model; 3D Powder Print
A building that houses various programs, the Athenaeum was a project designed for an open site in the Over-The-Rhine area of Cincinnati. The project's programs include administration, galleries, lobby, library, lecture hall, trustee's room, and a newspaper room. I experimented a lot with modularity and digital rendering in this project that I completed during my third academic semester at UC.

TOWN HOUSE This project was designed for a fictional client during my third academic semester. The house would be located on Riverside Drive in Covington, Kentucky with the city in the south and the Ohio River and Cincinnati to the north. This project was only four weeks long and precedes a larger residential project, the Mixed-Use Building.

PROPOSED HOLOCAUST MUSEUM
The Proposed Holocaust Museum is a building concept that was used by the Board of Directors and Museum Committee in conjunction with Herscoe Hajjar Architects to market a new building proposal for a currently active museum. My contributions to this project include: graphic displays of the necessary programs, embellishing a floor plan drafted by one of the Architects, and a model of; the the entire building and site parcel in SketchUp.n d l f n d f l k j g h .

OTR A.D.O.P.T. 3 WEST MCMICKEN AVE. This project for a Historic Preservation class involved measuring, researching, and documenting an abandoned building in the Cincinnati area. The building, located at 3 West McMicken Ave. was purchased by OTR A.D.O.P.T., a local organization that purchases abandoned buildings in the Over-the-Rhine area in hopes of restoring or rehabilitating them. My documented contributions to this group project are found on the following spread. The drawings will likely be used by OTR A.D.O.P.T. in the future.
