MY FAVOURITE BOOK PIPPI LONGSTOCKING
Pippi is a nine years old girl who lives by herself in a big house, Villa Villekulla, since her mother died and her father vanished at sea. Her red frizzy hair are tied in two thick braids and her face is covered with freckles.. She’s always wearing a multicoloured dress and a pair of two-tone long stockings. She’s good tempered and she enjoys making tricks to the ones who would like to “tame” her and turn her into a respectable girl. .
In Villa Villekulla, Pippi has the company of a monkey, Mr Nilsson, and of a spotted horse that she bought with one of the pieces of gold that she keeps in an old suitcase.
Pippi is very eccentric and self confident and her behaviour is amazing for her new two friends Annika and Tommy. She’s also incredibly strong and is even able to lift up her horse.
Pippi doesn’t know how to behave at school or in other social situations: she has never been taught how to be polite, but she has a strong sense of justice.
Next to Villa Villekulla lives a family with two very polite children. Pippi is very happy to have two new friends to play with, but her games are in no way ordinary games: on the first day out together, she tells Annika and Tommy that she is a Thing-finder and they set off to look for precious things like old rusty tins and empty spools of thread.
While they are looking for new things, they meet some bad boys who are bullying another little boy; she engages a fight with the leader of the gang and tosses him on a branch of a birch, then she beats all the others, one by one, and finally stands looking at them with a content smile.
One day two policemen come to her door and try to take her to the children’s home but she starts to make fun of them and begins to jump here and there. The policemen don’t succeed in catching her and she can continue to live her incredible adventures in Villa Villekulla with her two new friends and her two strange pets.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Astrid Lindgren was born in Sweden in 1907. She created Pippi Longstocking in 1945. In 1963 she wrote “Emil in the Soup Tureen”. Many of her books were transposed into films. She received the Gold Medal of the Swedish Academy in 1971.
