That was the brief that Maver took to the drawing board, the end result being the two poles in the Definition range. Billed by Maver as ‘the best power carp pole we have ever built’, they are manufactured using a new hi-tensile modulus carbon with patented build technologies. All good reading, of course, but why is the Definition reckoned to be so much stronger than what has gone before? Seriously impressive wall strength is the first obvious thing you notice. A hard pinch produces little in the way of give, so when a fish piles on the pressure the carbon won’t wave the white flag. Sections 4, 5 and 6 are particularly strong, areas that are so important on a power pole. Joints are another area that can give way after some serious hammer, but Maver has provided a safety net here

with full Teflon joints to ramp up the strength and the overall rigidity of the pole. The Definition is no barge pole to fish with, though. Weight has been kept as low as possible, with superb balance and response. Available as a 13m or 14.5m model and weighing only 615g at 11.5m and 875g at 13m, the price for both demands a seriously close look if you are a club or pleasure angler or a matchman looking for a strong, reliable pole. The pole is rated to a comfortable No20-plus elastic and is furnished with two Powerlite Power top two kits that are both fitted with a side puller slot and PTFE bush. ON THE PULL WITH PERFECT

Elasticating a standard top kit is relatively straightforward, but using a side puller system

THREADING ELASTIC THROUGH THE No2 SECTION OF A PULLER TOP KIT 1

Insert a diamond eye threader through the exit point on the bottom of the No2 section of the puller kit and push it to the narrow end.

Once it emerges, put the elastic through the diamondshaped eye and squeeze it shut so it traps the tag end of the elastic (see pic above).

Cut the end of the elastic at a 45 degree angle with a sharp pair of scissors. The object is to get a fine tapered point on the hollow elastic.

This is what you should be left with. You are going to put a ‘stop’ bead on the elastic at this point, and the taper helps with easy location

Now you pull the other end of the threader back through the exit hole. dragging the elastic with it until the diamond eye is clear of the exit.

Tackle shops sell a variety of different-sized beads for this purpose. Choose the correct diameter that suits the elastic you’re fitting.

SECURING THE ELASTIC AT THE EXIT HOLE ON THE No2 SECTION 1

Push the bead 12ins up the elastic and form a loop, trapping the two pieces together.

Now lubricate the knot with saliva before tightening it to prevent friction burn. 16

Next, tie two overhand knots in the doubled-up elastic in order to create a large bulky knot.

Once tightened, you’ll be left with a big loop. Cut this off to form what is known as a ‘spider’.

When you’ve tied the knot, and before you pull it tight, it should look like something this.

The finished result – with an extra-secure knot that can never pull through!

in your top kits is a little trickier to perfect. Here’s how to do it step-by-step...

ELASTICATING THE No1 SECTION OF A PULLER TOP KIT 1

Push a diamond eye threader through the PTFE bush at the No1 section tip until it emerges from the thicker end at the bottom of the section.

Push the No1 and No2 sections together. Stretch the elastic a foot at a time. Do this twice to pre-stretch it and to prevent it hanging out after you’ve landed a ﬁsh or two.

Repeat process one, step two (top of left-hand page), and trap the elastic in the diamond eye of the threader in preparation for drawing it back through.

For the elastic to creep back into the tip it must be 2ins shorter than the section length. Pull the slack elastic 2ins from the PTFE bush and cut it at this point.

Pull steadily on the threader and the elastic will emerge through the bush. Make sure you pull at least a foot of elastic beyond the bush.

HOW TO ATTACH A DACRON CONNECTOR TO POLE ELASTIC 1

Tie an overhand knot in the elastic and then open the loop on the connector and lay the elastic over the top.

Wet the elastic with your ﬁnger and slide the braid hard up against the knot created earlier, and pull fully tight.

With the elastic trapped, fold the braid loop fully over the bell-shaped stopper cone, as shown here.

Holding the elastic, pull the cone away so that the braid tightens. This is the anchor point for the system. This is the super-neat ﬁnished article.

Push the cone-shaped buffer bead back down the Dacron until it sits snugly over the knot.

Some very modern touches have gone into the Excellence, most notably three mini reversible butt sections that fit the No5, No6, No7, No8 and No9 sections to provide added security when fishing at close range for big fish or when slapping pellets up in the water. The pole also has a super top kit package made up of three big bore

kits to take heavy elastics, two Match top threes and a top four kit plus – interestingly – two lengths of cupping kit complete with carbon pole cups. Far from being purely a power carp pole, the Excellence has been designed and built very much as an all-rounder. Make or break for a long pole can be how it behaves when the 16m section is added. A good pole can suddenly turn into a banana, but not the Excellence Pro. At its full length there’s still a sharp responsiveness with minimal post-strike wobble, and when you hook a fish, the top four sections have a lovely flexible action spread over each piece of carbon to transmit the stress evenly. Wall strength is firm but flexible,

with each section having a steely feel to it, but there’s more than enough strength to ‘give it the big one’ when playing hefty fish or striking using heavy rigs in deep water with thick elastics. Added reinforcement on the end of the larger sections also locks in the power.

The 9m Trilogy 2 combines raw power with responsiveness.

GOOD as the original Trilogy Margin and XRS Power Margin poles from Tri-Cast were, the new 9m Trilogy 2 knocks both into a cocked hat. Tri-Cast is famed for its strong carp poles and this new offering continues that legacy, packing brute force into every inch of every section. However, the pole is still fully manageable at the full 9m length. Made from a unique military grade of carbon cloth which is both strong and reliable, the sections are built around the same mandrel as used for the first Trilogy Margin pole. This means that if you’re looking to upgrade, then all top kits and sections are fully interchangeable. At its full 9m length, the Trilogy 2 offers not a hint of bounce when shipping in or out, so there’s no chance of rigs tangling around the tip. It also has the lightning response on the strike that you’d expect to find on a lightweight roach pole. That means the slightest of ‘dinks’ on the float can be walloped and the fish hooked – after all, bites down the edge aren’t always elastic stripping sail-aways! Extensions are available to take the pole up to 12.2m should you fish a venue where going long down the side is a must, but in most situations the standard 9m length will be more than enough. Two Power top two kits are provided and these can take up to a brutal No25 elastic.
