Welcome T

HE LURE OF the long-distance path is impossible to resist. Perhaps because it speaks to something nomadic and horizon-hungry deep in our nature; possibly because it allows you to pub-dine day after day and still out-run middle-age spread. One thing’s for sure: it is uniquely satisfying – walking filleted of faff (at least, once you’re planned and booked), de-boned of driving, trimmed of the fat of seeing the same scenery twice. There’s no better way to take stock of a country so adept at packing more adventure in than it seems possible for an island of its size. Imagine trails as diverse as the West Highland Way and the South Downs Way; the South West Coast Path and the Cumbria Way, the Thames Path and Offa’s Dyke 18 in a nation smaller than Michigan! It’s incredible but true. And it’s all laid out waiting for you.

Pennine Way Traversing the spine of England from Derbyshire to the Scottish Border, the pioneering Pennine Way is still the definitive long-distance experience.

F

OR MANY WALKERS it’s a ‘one of these days’ ambition at the top of their bucket list; the Pennine Way is arguably the king of long-distance trails in England. Following the nation’s upland backbone from the Peak District to the Cheviot Hills, it’s one of the most popular trails in the country – 150,000 people enjoy it every year. It’s also England’s first National Trail, opened on the 24th April 1965; though the idea was first proposed thirty years earlier by rambler and journalist Tom Stephenson, who was inspired by the Appalachian Trail in the USA. Beginning in Edale and ending in the Scottish Borders, the Pennine Way passes through three National Parks and the North Pennines AONB. Along the way it crosses Kinder Scout, climbs Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales and rounds the spectacular gorge of High Cup. A demanding trail, it often traverses wild and remote swathes of open moorland, topping out at 893m on the summit of Cross Fell – the highest any National Trail reaches. GRADIENT PROFILE

South Downs Way A glorious swathe of chalk downland on the sunny south coast.

F

OLLOWING AN UNDULATING band of chalk across the south of England, the South Downs Way clocks up 100 miles on its journey to the coast. The white rock is exposed in all its glory where the trail meets the sea at Beachy Head, crossing the Seven Sisters on its final leg. It crosses the tops of the downs, only dropping down to cross the river valleys that interrupt its course. Along the way, it rounds gaping combes and visits sleepy villages. WINCHESTER

Southern Upland Way A coast-to-coast journey across the lowlands of Scotland.

C

rossing the gorgeous Galloway Forest Park and weaving between the hills of the Scottish Borders, the Southern Upland Way travels through the little-trodden corners of the Scottish countryside, usually neglected by the majority looking for adventure north of the border. Normally walked from west to east, it begins on the Rhins of Galloway at Portpatrick, heading inland to the Galloway Hills and on to the rounded tops of the Tweedsmuir Hills before terminating on the windswept Berwickshire Coast. Rarely reaching any great height, it eases through tranquil glens and over open moors, visiting delightful towns and villages along the way. A challenge in its entirety, the route is easily adapted for gentle day hikes. GRADIENT PROFILE

Glyndwr’s Way Escape to a princely realm in hills at the heart of Wales.

C

OMMEMORATING A WELSH hero, Glyndŵr’s Way explores the serene yet overlooked countryside at the middle of the nation. Named after Owain Glyndŵr, the last native Prince of Wales and leader of the Welsh Revolt in the 15th century, it’s the third of Wales’ National Trails. Meandering through his former heartlands in the Cambrian Mountains of central Powys, it visits the site of his short-lived parliament at Machynlleth. From the trailhead at Knighton, where it touches base with the Offa’s Dyke Path, it passes through the Radnorshire Hills, pressing on to the tiny town of Llanidloes in the Cambrian Mountains proper. Rising above the shore of the Llyn Clywedog reservoir, it reaches its summit on the isolated moorland of the Glaslyn Nature Reserve. Down in the Dyfi Valley just a few miles from the coast, Machynlleth is the half-way point, and here the trail turns back inland, over the hills and forested valleys to the foot of Vyrnwy Dam – the first stone dam of its kind in the world. Thames Path Follow England’s most famous river on its journey from source to sea.

N

O OTHER LONG-DISTANCE path can boast such contrasting trailheads as the Thames Path: at one end is the pleasant quietude of the Cotswold countryside and at the other is the beating heart of a global metropolis. It follows the meandering course of the River Thames downstream from its source in rural Gloucestershire to the tidal limit of the river at the Thames Barrier, some 184 miles away. Being pretty much downhill all the way, largely on flat riverside paths, the Thames Path is one of the most accessible National Trails, shadowing the evolving stream through tranquil water meadows and along willow-fringed riverbanks. Passing through historic towns, villages and Royal Parks, it culminates in the hustle and bustle of central London. GRADIENT PROFILE

KIRTING THE NORTH York Moors along its lofty banks and heatherswathed moors, the Cleveland Way is a trail of two halves. The inland part rounds the park’s west and northern edges, while the eastern leg follows rocky shores. Sometimes the trail weaves a way over wild and remote moorland, miles from civilisation, and other times it delves into cosy fishing villages. Visiting castles, ruined abbeys and stone crosses along the way, its route is awash with historic landmarks.

West Highland Way The high road to the Highlands.

A

RGUABLY THE FOREMOST of Scotland’s Great Trails, the West Highland Way ventures into the heart of the Highlands through the glens of the Grampian Mountains. It’s estimated that 15,000 people complete the trail every year, with a further 65,000 enjoying sections of it – making it Scotland’s most popular trail. Following the course of old military roads, drover’s tracks and coaching routes, it leaves the Central Belt for the mountains of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, granting a first taste of the Highlands. Following the banks of the famous loch past Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps, the trail is funnelled into Glen Falloch. Sticking to the winding valleys to Bridge of Orchy, it rises slowly across the edge of Rannoch Mor, where you’re confronted with the jawdropping spectacle of Buachaille Etive Mor at the entrance to Glen Coe. Over the Devil’s Staircase, it’s onto Lochaber and Fort William, where the more adventurous will round off their journey with a climb to top of Ben Nevis. GRADIENT PROFILE

Beginning in the Wye Valley, it rises over the Hatterall Ridge on the edge of the Black Mountains and enters the Welsh Marches. Picking up the dyke proper, it dips in and out of England no less than 20 times, glancing the Shropshire Hills on its way to Welshpool. Turning into the Dee Valley, the trail then traverses the Clwydian Range before meeting Wales’ north coast at Prestatyn. Passing through a national park and three AONBs, the path boasts spectacular scenery – from the green mountains of South Wales to the heather-capped Clwydian Hills and the drama of the Dee Valley. Signs of the past are never far away, whether it be a wayside church or a monumental feat of Victorian engineering, and of course the dyke itself. GRADIENT PROFILE

N CONTRAST TO the Moors and the Dales, the Yorkshire Wolds are a more unassuming aspect of the county’s landscape. But what they lack in stature, they make up for in the distinction of being the most northerly chalk hills in Britain. The Yorkshire Wolds Way navigates the twisting dales and rolling downs, from the banks of the Humber to the coast at Filey. Along the way, this trail passes through the landscaped parkland of Londesborough, the poppy-swathed meadows of FILEY Thixendale and the lost village of Wharram Percy. It’s unique in boasting public HESSLE artworks along its length.

N THE FAR SIDE of the Weald from the South Downs, the North Downs are a geological mirror image of their sister, and though alike on the surface, they evolved a very different character. Following this often wooded scarp from deepest Surrey to Dover on the Kent Coast, is the North Downs Way. For much of its course, it shadows and sometimes follows the route of Pilgrims Way, which runs along the foot of the downs. But when its planners were devising a route, they chose a different path to the track taken by medieval The North Downs pilgrims on near Dorking. their way to Canterbury, instead favouring a high route with superb views over southeast England. South West Coast Path A path of epic proportions rounding the south-west peninsula of Great Britain and touching its southernmost point along the way.

A

ROLLERCOASTER JOURNEY FROM Minehead to Poole, the ups and downs of the South West Coast Path tally up to a total ascent nearly four times the height of Everest. And at a whopping 630 miles, it’s also the longest of Britain’s official National Trails. It’s an immense undertaking and few will complete it in its entirety (fewer still in one go), but thousands will enjoy sections of it every year, walking between the secluded coves, headlands and myriad picturesque fishing villages. The trail originated as clifftop paths for coastguards scouring the shore for smugglers, but these days its purpose is purely for pleasure. It’s a path that explores human heritage as much as it does natural history. With six AONBs, two World Heritage Sites and a National Park along its route, the coast path boasts ever-changing vistas along its length. From the hills of Exmoor to secluded Cornish coves, and onwards to the sleepy estuaries of Devon and Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, few trails can rival its variety or match its scale. GRADIENT PROFILE

The Ridgeway An ancient superhighway once travelled by drovers, traders and soldiers across the high ground of Wessex and the Chilterns.

H

AILED AS BRITAIN’S oldest road, The Ridgeway follows the path of an ancient track crossing the Wessex Downs and Chilterns Hills from Wiltshire to Buckinghamshire. Worn out over five millennia, its route is dotted with the relics of our ancestors; from ruined Iron Age hill forts, to magnificent Bronze Age chalk horses and prehistoric megaliths. It became a National Trail back in 1973 and today is a quiet back way providing a scenic route over the hills. An easy, if sometimes muddy trail, The Ridgeway can be surprisingly isolated at times as it crosses the rolling chalk downland of Wessex and the leafy Chiltern Hills, dipping down into small villages and crossing the River Thames in the Goring Gap.

EW TRAILS OWE their existence to a Roman Emperor. Crossing the wild borderlands of Northern England from east to west – coast to coast – the Hadrian’s Wall Path shadows the remains of the Emperor’s great defensive works, built nearly 2000 years ago on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. The trail explores this internationally renowned World Heritage Site, navigating the craggy escarpments and desolate moors traversed by the wall. Though remote in places, especially where it scrapes the Northumberland National Park, it’s an achievable challenge for most walkers and can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, with summer bus services making it easy to walk in sections. The trail that traces an incredible legacy of the greatest empire in the ancient world.

Pembrokeshire Coast Path A ribbon of golden sands and thrilling clifftops, this trail opens up pristine shores.

O

N ONE SIDE is tame and unassuming countryside rolling away towards distant hills and on the other a wild and craggy precipice plunging towards the sea; this trail is a spectacular journey between these worlds. Clinging almost entirely to the county’s seaward extremities, the coast path travels the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park from end to end, exploring one of Britain’s most unspoilt shorelines – a coast cherished for its natural riches and prehistoric treasures. Opened in 1970, it was Wales’ first National Trail and since thousands have walked it from St Dogmaels in the north to Amroth in the south; but many more will enjoy it in parts. It’s a sectional hiker’s dream with much of the trail connected by bus. It’s also a trail of contrasts and can’t be underestimated. Its sharp ups, downs, ins and outs will test even the fittest walker, but for every rugged headland there’s a sweeping bay around the corner. From the ancient crags of St David’s Head to the dunes of Stackpole, it’s a real corker! GRADIENT PROFILE

Wales Coast Path Loved the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and want to keep going? There’s much more to discover on the rest of the Wales Coast Path.

O

PENED IN 2012 as the first trail to follow the entire coastline of a nation, the Wales Coast Path joined the Offa’s Dyke Path to create a continuous route around Wales. Incorporating the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and other regional trails, it’s currently the longest trail in the UK and accordingly it takes nearly 10 weeks to walk from end to end. Leaving the estuary of the River Wye and finishing where the River Dee flows into the Irish Sea, it touches the tip of the Gower Peninsular before easing seamlessly westwards onto Pembrokeshire’s pristine shores, where it soon changes tack and turns into Cardigan Bay. Picking up the Ceredigion Coast Path from the banks of the River Teifi, the trail follows the arc of the bay to the southern extant of Snowdonia, crossing the Dyfi Estuary into Gwynedd. Bridging the Mawddach Estuary and skirting Tremadog Bay, the path swings around the Llyn Peninsula and onto Anglesey before a final stretch along the north coast of Wales. 200

From the Himalayas, to the Blue Mountains, the Andes to the Drakensberg, The Rockies to the Golden Triangle, the natural, historical and unique wonder of these spectacular regions, albeit in a different context, is equalled here in Andalusia, and particularly in the Axarquia. David and I have trekked and hiked extensively across the world, and here, in the mountains surrounding the beautiful white washed village of Competa, we have found a walking and hiking paradise. The Axarquia offers 100’s of kilometres of breath-taking and extensive multi-level walking and hiking routes, criss crossed by Ibex, mountain goats, deer, wild boar and wild cat tracks, while many different species of Eagles, Falcons and Kestrels soar closely overhead. Enhancing the marvellous spectacle of the Axarquia and its wildlife, is the obvious and delightful culture and history of rural Spain, beautifully maintained here in traditional working and farming practice, amongst

Competa Hikes and The Axarquia, Andalusia

white washed mountain villages dotted throughout the olive, almond and vine planted hilsides, steeped in the history of the Moors and Catholics battles to dominate this stunning area. And of course the Mediterranean, sub-tropical temperate climate not only produces wonderful fruits such as mango, dates, kiwis and ďŹ gs to pick as you walk, but also supports walking and hiking all year round. It is our mission to share and teach about the immense history, the wonderful landscape, ora, fauna and wildlife of this splendid region, so that it may be enjoyed, understood and preserved. Preservation of this region is most important to us and we have started a programme to provide education about the environment here, free to children and their families in Andalusia, so that we can not only promote the area, but ensure that the next generation grow up appreciating as much, its importance in this little corner of the world.

Born and bred in Africa, David and I love the outdoors, and have a global perspective on everything we do. Competa Hikes, is not only our business, it is our passion. This winter we have embarked on a key project to enhance the walker’s experience of this wonderful area and our walking lodge: We are about to open the Competa Walking Centre, a walking club, delicatessen, small cafe and walker’s community area to promote and provide access to this splendid walking region. Our focus is not just our own business but to provide walkers from all over the world an exclusive guide to all that they can enjoy here in the Axarquia. From multi lingual seminars and education sessions, to guided walking, specialist accommodation across the region and other adventures available. We are providing specialist walking tours,

right from our doorstep. Our walking lodge sleeps 20 people. We have superb, qualified walking guides, qualified in the British Mountaineering Association, that have also grown up in the region and provide specialist tours for bird watching, wild orchid viewing, medicinal herb tours and courses on how to grow your own medicinal herb garden in your kitchen!! They also provide Spanish mushroom tours, collecting and cooking, and many other unique tours of this nature.

Finally our combination walking tour holidays aim to add culture and language to our guests achievements of their week here, adding Spanish Language classes, rural Spain cultural events and day trips to the walking itinerary. And guests may add yoga, painting, cooking, wine tasting or sculpting courses to their walking tour itinerary.

This is simply rural Spain at its absolute best. This is The Axarquia! This is our passion, this is our life, and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. Sarah and David Mills www.competahikes.com competahikes@gmail.com

Gear for the trail Kit yourself out for long-distance adventures

eight and comfort are key when choosing footwear distance walking – you don’t want to be for long-distance hoofing around lead weights on your feet. We recommend lightweight boots or robust and waterproof trail shoes, ready for when the weather turns against you.  SHOES MEINDL RESPOND GTX £125 These consummate all-rounders are versatile and dependable multi-terrain shoes – cushioned enough for everyday walking, but stable and durable enough to put in the miles. Their Gore-Tex lining will fend off persistent downpours. www.meindl.co.uk

SOCKS

BRIDGEDALE MERINOFUSION TREKKER £16

BOOTS HANWAG COMOX GTX £180 The Comox is another great all-rounder with a poise, elegance and emphasis on comfort that sets it apart from other boots. It’s no softy; heel-strikes are firm, which is great on mountain paths. But it just feels more forgiving and luxurious than comparably firm boots. www.hanwag.com

These classics will easily see you through a couple of days on the trail before a change of socks is due. Ventillated on top, but padded for cushioning around the heel, sole and toes, these Trekker socks use Bridgedale’s sweat-wicking and odour-resistant Merinofusion material. Mid-weight socks for all seasons, they’re ready for anything. www.bridgedale.com

HEN YOU’RE DRESSING for a long-distance trail you need to pack for any eventuality; whether glorious sunshine or the inevitable day when it’s bucketing down. Think light, practicable and packable. Getting the basics of the layering system right will keep you comfortable whatever the weather. uMIDLAYER CRAGHOPPERS WHITELEY HALFZIP FLEECE £30 Made of 100g microfleece, Craghoppers’ Whiteley breathes well, dries quickly and is extremely light, yet amply warm except in the coldest conditions. It’s fairly thin too, so will sit neatly under any waterproof, with a half-zip for venting. www.craghoppers.com

WATERPROOF JACKET SALOMON NEBULA £170 This jacket is aimed squarely at the fast and light crowd. The whole thing packs down into nothing for easy stowage. Its big trick is unzipping the sides, to vent heat. www.salomon.com

 TROUSERS CRAGHOPPERS NOSILIFE PRO CONVERTIBLES £70 Convertible trousers give you the flexibility to switch between shorts and trousers on the go. These softshell trousers are wind resistant and stretchy too, allowing your legs ample freedom of movement. www.craghoppers.com

BASELAYER SMARTWOOL LIGHT LS TOP £63 Smartwool’s blend of merino and synthetic fabrics gives you the best of both worlds for this baselayer top. Wicking sweat, quick drying and cooling on big climbs, it boasts a dynamic fit. www.smartwool.com

uNECK TUBE BUFF FROM £15 The original multifunctional neckwear, a Buff is a must-have accessory for the trail, serving as your scarf, hat, bandana, balaclava... available in an array of colourful designs. www.buffwear.co.uk

Rucksacks

T

HE RIGHT SIZE pack for a long-distance trail depends on how much you’re carrying… which in turn depends on how (and how far) you’re travelling. If you’re picking up provisions along the way and spare clothes are being transferred nightly between your accommodations, a 30-40 litre daypack will suffice; if not, you’ll want a 45+ litre pack for the extra gear you’ll be carrying. Chuck in a tent plus sleeping and cooking clobber, and you’re looking at a pack of around 70 litres for a camping expedition.

DAY PACK DEUTER ACT TRAIL PRO 38SL £120 A mid-size pack with heavyweight credentials. The back is padded with body-hugging foam cushions; wearing it is like being embraced by a benign bear. It stabilises heavy loads with ease and has a useful wet laundry space at the front. Good ventilation on the straps help you reduce heat buildup too. www.deutergb.co.uk

 DRYBAG EXPED FOLD DRYBAG FROM £8.50

TREKKING PACK OSPREY ATMOS AG 50 £170 On a multi-day walk where you’re carrying everything (no sherpa service), this is your go-to pack. The load is held securely away from your shoulders, but without any compromise on internal storage. Pockets all over the place and a stiff, firm harness complete the mix. www.ospreyeurope.com

These are incredibly useful on a multi-day trail. They come in different sizes so you can stash anything from wallet and car keys to a good-size sandwich lunch. Easy roll-top closure keeps the load reliably water-free. www.exped.com

OME ARE ESSENTIALS, others can just make life on the trail much more comfortable – these are just some of the extra bits and pieces to pack for safe and enjoyable long-distance walks.

TRAVEL TOWEL LIFEVENTURE SOFT FIBRE TREK TOWEL £17 Let’s be honest, that luxury cotton bathsheet is never going to fit in your bag… but this is the next best thing. Stowing down small, it’s soft, absorbent yet fast-drying, and ‘anti-bac’ treated, so it stays fresher for longer on the trail. www.lifeventure.co.uk

HYDRATION SOURCE 2 LITRE WIDEPAC BLADDER £28 A capacious water bladder makes keeping hydrated on the go much easier. The best thing about the Widepac is the glass-like polyethylene film, which makes the whole system virtually self-cleaning. Refilling, and opening and closing the valve is nice and simple too. www.sourceoutdoor.com

 FIRST AID LIFESYSTEMS TREK FIRST AID KIT £14 Patch up grazes and fix blisters on the go with Lifesystem’s handy Trek first aid kit. It packs all the essentials into easy-find pouches: small bandages, micropore tape, blister plasters, antiseptic wipes and much more besides. www.lifesytstems.co.uk 60 COUNTRY WALKING WALKING PAGES 2017

TREKKING POLES LEKI MICRO VARIO CARBON £145/PAIR

They’re not the cheapest on the market by a long way, but these carbon fibre trekking poles from Leki are hard to beat on weight and ‘packability,’ folding away nice and small. They’re also length adjustable and very robust. www.leki.com/uk
