STUNNING NEW PCP DEALS

GET MORE FOR LESS Affording a new or used bike has never been easier thanks to Personal Contract Plans

By Richard Newland DEPUTY EDITOR

W

hile bikes have never been better value than they are right now, we’ve also never had more things fighting for our money. But PCP is about as close to a win:win situation you’re ever likely to get where motorcycles and bank balances are involved. Personal Contract Plans have gone from being a rare oddity in our world to taking 20-30% of the new bike finance market, and it’s growing fast. If we follow the trend of the car market, over 90% of financed new bike purchases could be on PCP in five years. But it might not be right for you, so make sure you fully understand what it is and how it works. The figures look crazy for some makes and models – but it’s not as mad as it might seem. The upshot is that you can have these new bikes for less than you might ever have imagined – and what’s more you can have another new one in three years’ time, probably without increasing your monthly outlay, or having to find a fresh deposit. The only catch is that the bike won’t be owned by you unless you make the big final payment. The system works by letting you pay for the bike’s depreciation (plus the interest), rather than the full retail price. Add in a decent deposit, and you’re only paying back a small chunk

of the loan value, which is how you get such a temptingly low monthly outlay. So what’s the catch? At the end of the contract period, you don’t own anything, and instead have a decision to make: do you pay off the outstanding amount and keep the bike; give the bike back and walk away owing – and owning – nothing; or do you roll your PCP deal on to a new bike? Most will use the equity in the GFV

‘You can have these new bikes for less than you might imagine’ as a deposit, and roll onto a new PCP deal. But be aware that you might not have enough equity to do this, meaning you’ll need to find a new deposit. What am I really paying for? You’re effectively entering into a longterm hire agreement, so if you run the bike into the ground you’ll end up having to pay more than the agreed value at the end. But if you check the interest rate is competitive and research the future values of similar bikes, keep your bike serviced and in tip top condition, you can’t go far wrong.

OPTION 1 BUY NEW ON PCP Most dealers offer PCP schemes through one or two big finance houses – this is how it works... ● Get your budget worked out, based on what you can afford as a deposit and as monthly repayments for the duration of the contract ● You can get PCP on any amount from £1500 upwards ● Choose your new motorcycle (or a used one, as bikes up to three years old can also qualify – see right) ● Set a repayment term of between two to four years ● Set your annual mileage at up to 24,000 miles a year. Your annual mileage will affect your monthly payments and future value. Most deals are based on 4000-6000 miles ● Decide on which end-of-agreement option is best for you when the time comes – most roll on to another bike This option’s great if... ● Not owning the bike outright doesn’t bother you ● You like to keep your options open ● You’re after flexible deposit options ● You can work with a mileage allowance of up to 24,000 miles a year (more will incur penalties) ● You want to pay over a period of two to four years in regular, relatively small, monthly payments ● You want to pay equal monthly

payments across the term ● You are worried about an unexpected fall in the value of the bike (thanks to the ‘G’ in Guaranteed Future Value) At the end of the contract... When your contract comes to an end you have three options: ● Part-exchange the motorcycle for another one – subject to settlement of your existing finance agreement ● Return the motorcycle. If it’s in good condition and has not exceeded the allowed mileage you will have nothing further to pay ● Hand over the final payment figure and can keep the bike

PCP can be used for both new and used bike purchases

Be aware that... ● You do not own the motorcycle and won’t unless you pay the final balloon figure at the end of the term ● A significant proportion of the credit is deferred until the end of the contract, and it’s not the cheapest route to actual ownership ● You must have fully comprehensive insurance cover in place throughout ● Excess mileage charges apply, and some are quite hefty ● Abuse or neglect will damage your bike’s guaranteed future value ● Your motorcycle is at risk of repossession if you do not maintain contractual repayments.

CONTENTS Straight finance a clear route to ownership

OPTION 2 HIRE PURCHASE If you want a bit of security with your purchase, and you’re comfortable with the bike belonging to the finance company until you’ve paid off the whole contract, then you could go with this option – a good oldfashioned hire purchase contract. The benefit is that you can buy the motorcycle you want while spreading the cost over a period that makes it more affordable within your financial landscape. After paying an initial deposit you get to ride away on your new pride and joy, on the strict agreement that you’ll continue to pay the remaining instalments to the end of the term. Once you’ve made all the payments – the motorcycle is wholly yours to do with as you wish. Most dealers offer Hire Purchase through one or two big companies – this is how it works... ● Get your budget worked out based on what you can afford to repay – you can borrow any amount from £1500 ● Choose your new motorcycle (or a used one – higher value bikes up to 12

years old can usually qualify) ● Set a repayment term of one to five years, based on your monthly budget This option’s great if... ● You want flexible deposit options – 0% deposit, and 0% finance may even be available, subject to status ● You want a simple repayment sum at fixed interest rates, so you’ll always know the amount of each payment for the duration of the contract period ● You want to own your motorcycle outright at the end of the contract Be aware that... ● You must have fully comprehensive insurance during the finance term ● Your motorcycle is at risk of repossession if you do not maintain your agreed repayments ● You have no protection against the bike’s depreciation in value ● You do not properly own the motorcycle until all of the payments have been made.

OR BUY USED

OPTION 3 PERSONAL LOAN

While there are huge numbers of new bikes now being sold using PCP - don’t think that you have to buy new. You can also pick up a fabulous used bike on a PCP deal, making huge savings, and paying for even less depreciation and interest. ● Get your budget worked out, based on what you can afford as a deposit and as monthly repayments for the duration of the contract ● For used vehicles the maximum permitted vehicle mileage at the start of the agreement is 3000 miles per month of age, or 60,000 miles. The bike must also be no older than five years old at the end of the agreed PCP term ● You can get PCP on any amount from £1500 upwards ● Choose your used motorcycle ● Set a repayment term of between two to four years ● Set your annual mileage ● Decide on which end-ofagreement option is best for you when the time comes – most roll on to another bike This option’s great if... ● You want the best balance of payments versus cost ● You’re not bothered about being the first keeper of the motorcycle.

Short of saving up your pennies until they become a tide of pounds, benefitting from a windfall, or being in the simplistically enviable position of being loaded – you could fall back on option three: the personal loan. The beauty is that it’s just a lump sum, which you can use to fund whatever takes your fancy – the loan is not tied to the bike. The only proviso is that you pay it back at the rate and times agreed. Buy a bike, add some kit or accessories, something nice for your partner – the choice is yours. There are various routes to a personal loan, such as your bank... ● Get your budget worked out based on what you can afford to repay

ADVENTURE DEALS FROM £59 P4 ADVENTURE SPORT DEALS FROM £66 P5

across the period of the loan – you can borrow anything from £400 to £25,000 over one to five years ● Find your perfect bike (the fun bit) ● Set a repayment term of one to five years, based on your monthly budget This option’s great if... ● You want to own your motorcycle outright from the start of your loan ● You want fixed, regular payments ● You want the flexibility to buy kit or accessories at the same time Be aware that... ● You can’t just terminate the agreement and hand the motorcycle back to end the loan agreement ● You have no protection against the bike’s depreciation in value.

MW have launched two variants of the updated GS for 2017, the off-road biased Rallye and the road-biased Exclusive. The Rallye bridges the gap between the standard GS and the big Adventure, and sets a new tone for the R1200GS family. Those who buy a Rallye can go two ways: to the standard road version or the even more off-road focused version, which includes off-road biased rubber, Sports suspension (£290), with an increased spring rate, and longer spring struts (from the Adventure) and extended spring travel, which raises the seat height 20mm to 900mm, for serious dirt abuse. Spec your bike to the max, and you can have the joys of the Premium package which, for £1645, includes Dynamic ESA self-levelling suspension, keyless ignition, on-board computer Pro, a GPS bracket, and cruise control. An Akrapovic exhaust adds another £860, while the engine protection kit adds £322, the cylinder head covers £188, the headlight guard

£87, the adjustable back brake lever £111 and milled HP levers at £95 each. All that would take the Rallye to a whopping £18,318, or a bog-standard Rallye is just £139pm, and you’re unlikely to feel short on spec. Riding the Rallye both on road and off it, is an electronically enhanced revelation. Selecting Enduro mode enables off-road ABS front and rear, while you have the DTC traction control controlling the rear. Considering it’s 220kg of GS on dirt, you couldn’t feel safer or more secure. The systems are the pinnacle of crossover rider aids. It flatters the average rider while being a genuine big enduro for experts.

It really shouldn’t work, but Honda piled a stack of R&D into developing their DCT clutchless transmission for off-road use – and the Africa Twin DCT version is

superb both on road and off. In all other ways (other than weight) it’s the same as its sibling. There’s £500 off and £960 worth of luggage until the end of September.

The X got a raft of subtle changes last year, including: a larger windscreen for better rider protection, LED headlamp and taillight, revised suspension settings,

expanded storage, plus LCD instruments with personalised colour options. There’s a DCT bike, too. There’s £500 off until end of September.

Given a brace of revisions for 2017, the 1000 gets a new seat and cowling/windscreen design for improved comfort, while also adopting the Motion Track Brake System

(cornering ABS). The screen design has also been changed thanks to extensive windtunnel testing, and has three pre-set positions. An off-road XT version is also available.

hen Honda wheeled out their Adventure City concept in 2015, we wondered what they’d been smoking. Who asked for an adventure scooter? Surely it wouldn’t make it to production? But it did – and it’s really rather good. Its rugged, blocky styling takes its cues from its adventure big

brother, the Africa Twin, but it’s still unmistakably a scooter to look at – those long footboards, huge seat, and the 15in rear wheel give it away. It uses the 53bhp 745cc paralleltwin engine from the Integra and NC range, with Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission (DTC) system, which can be used in automatic or manual settings. There are two riding modes: Drive and Sport. Drive offers

Swish LCD dash is angle-adjustable steady, smooth and relaxed power – perfect for towns – while Sport mode sharpens the throttle response, holds gears longer before changing up and it also changes down quicker.

Acceleration is brisk at best – but it has enough oomph to make powering out of hairpin bends fun and will make light work of commuting traffic. The X-ADV’s trump card is its ride and mass centralised handling. This is a scooter that feels incredibly balanced in corners and offers easy, neutral handling. The X-ADV drops into corners naturally and is incredibly stable too - forget about gears, tip in, and twist the throttle hard at the apex. Take the X-ADV onto the dirt and it doesn’t embarrass itself. The long travel suspension soaked up large

bumps and even felt stable when we hit deep patches of sand. The handlebars are lifted straight from the Africa Twin and provide good leverage, although I’d prefer them to be a little higher when stood up. But most owners won’t negotiate anything more than a gravel drive. It’s practical, too. There’s 21 litres of storage space under the seat – enough for a full face helmet, although a peaked helmet will struggle to fit. The dash provides all manner of information – speed, gear, riding mode, date, temperature – and the screen is adjustable to five positions.

Kawasaki’s Versys 650 has grown up into a serious small-capacity sports tourer - brilliant at munching big miles for little money, and

perfect for less experienced and smaller riders. The 649cc parallel twin-cylinder engine is grunty and flexible, the suspension impressive.

oday’s scramblers aren’t actually meant to go off-road. But this one is. Ducati reckon they’ve built a real off-road Scrambler with their new Desert Sled – and they’ve got it bang-on. It uses the same 803cc air-cooled motor, steel teardrop petrol tank and strong fourpot Brembo caliper up front… but that’s it. The Italian marque have put some serious effort into off-road-proofing the Desert Sled. The most important revisions include

the all-new KYB suspension system, and – crucially – the reinforced frame and extended swingarm, now fixed to the frame instead of the engine so it can take harder impacts. There’s a bunch of other goodies, too, such as a new headlamp grille, front and rear mudguards, exhaust system, detachable rear pillion pegs and the bashplate from the Urban Enduro model. Flying over ruts, spitting sand and locking the rear wheel is easy peasy. The

Old-school meets modern all LCD clock Pirelli Rally STR tyres are impressive, and the well-damped suspension makes off-roading much easier than it should be. It’s not going to win any enduros, but it offers a decluttered, stylish alternative to dual-purpose bikes – and is the only proper ‘scrambler’ on the market.

The Bonneville T120 uses a water-cooled 1199cc engine, producing a healthy 77ftlb of torque. Compared to the more powerful engine in the Thruxton, it has a

heavier crank and lower compression ratio, but the same 270-degree firing order. There’s also ABS, ride-bywire, traction control, and adjustable riding modes.

Most café racers look cool but often at the expense of practicality or rideability. Triumph changed all that last with the Thruxton R, and have done it again with the

Street Cup. It’s easy to ride, unintimidating and, despite mod cons such as switchable traction control, delightfully minimalist and sporty, too. It’s exquisitely finished, too.

When it comes to styling, the Urban G/S is spot on. A modern take on the legendary R80 G/S, it angrily barks its intent, and the aircooled boxer even smells

right when it’s hot. It rides beautifully, too – which is no surprise as beneath the styling is the truly excellent R nineT platform. The ultimate modern retro-enduro.

Most of the major manufacturers issue plans through Black Horse, but some use other finance groups – such as KTM with Santander – so if you’re planning on jumping between manufacturers, double-check your options before you buy. Can I get a PCP deal on a secondhand bike? Yes. Many dealers can offer this, and it’s all down to the choice of bike, and you, as to whether this is better than the deal you could get on a new bike. Generally the bike has to be under three years old to start with and must usually be under five years old at the end of the PCP. However, because of the lower retail price you might be able to afford the repayments on a straight loan, which could work out cheaper. The bonus with buying nearly new is that a chunk of depreciation has already gone – but you might still find there are better deals on new bikes.

Yamaha’s super-naked lets you enjoy that gem of a crossplane motor at saner speeds – mixing superbike performance with comfort. The MT-10 is dominated by its magical R1 engine and it’s definitely one of the greatest super-naked engines. Yamaha decided you don’t need a peaky 200bhp R1 race engine

for the road, and we agree, so they’ve moved the power lower down the revs, where you can reach it and shortened the gearing by two teeth on the rear, just to make sure. The crossplane unit howls, growls and wails like a YZR-M1 MotoGP racer at full whack, has the punch of a V4 exiting corners and a power delivery

so elastic, an electric motor would seem clunky by comparison. Third is the magic gear on the MT-10. Just leave it there through your favourite set of bends and the engine is so flexible it will take you from 20mph to over 100mph – and is the default cog for graceful wheelies. And although the MT-10 doesn’t

Neatly nestled between the S and RS is the R, monopolising the middle, and offering riders everything they need for naked hedonism. It gives away 5bhp at peak power to

the RS, while peak torque is identical. It gets a trick TFT dash, Brembo M4.32 calipers, and the Showa Separate Function Fork doesn’t disappoint, even on track.

If you’re after a fun but bulletproof budget roadster, the naked SV650 is back – now with beefed-up power delivery and the same amount of torque, at 47ftlb,

now delivered at 8100rpm rather than 6400rpm. The steel trellis frame is the same and it’s suspended by a similar shock and fork, which work well – as do the brakes.

Sporting an excellent 689cc parallel-twin engine, with 75bhp on tap, and a 270-degree crank to give the MT a V-twin-like delivery in line with Yamaha’s

crossplane philosophy, the MT-07 is peppy and responsive. A restricted A2 version is also available. One of the most entertaining middleweights you can buy.

Are there any pitfalls to Personal Contract Plans? Yes, of course there are. But they’re very clearly defined. The key to doing the perfect deal is being completely clear about what the plan entails, and being utterly confident that it meets your needs. There are two key points worth noting:

Honda CB500F 471cc | 190kg | 47bhp | 785mm Cash price £5299 Deposit £980.52 Mileage 4000pa Rate 6.9% APR Optional final payment £2147.35 The A2 licence-friendly CB500F got a makeover in 2016 with a more strippeddown, muscular look; a larger fuel tank, LED lighting, spring preload adjustable fork,

new lightweight exhaust and adjustable brake lever. Five vibrant paint options complement the aggressive angles. Now updated in 2017 for Euro4 compliance, too.

Negative/negligible equity Most riders who buy their bikes on PCP will roll their deal over to a new bike when the term comes to an end, hopefully using the equity in their deal as a deposit for the next bike. This is lovely in theory, but there is a growing trend amongst our four-wheeled

friends for the Guaranteed Final Value (GFV) to be nighon identical to the value of the car. Bang goes your equity for a deposit – and that means stumping up another lump sum to start again with a fresh PCP deal. If the GFV looks shockingly high, and/or the monthly payments shockingly low, make sure you investigate the deal thoroughly. Miles of smiles Don’t under-declare your average yearly mileage in order to boost your GFV or reduce your monthly payments. Some mileage penalties are steep, and you could find yourself facing big excess mileage costs.

N

ew name, new start – that’s the thinking with 2017 new Ninja 650. The perky, 649cc parallel twin has been lightened by 2kg and retuned with new cams and inlets to boost midrange at the slight expense of top end. The tubular steel frame is also new, primarily to shed an impressive 15kg, and has a few shades of H2R about it as well. The gull swingarm is new, too, and saves a further 2.7kg; the rear suspension’s more sophisticated with the addition of a rising

rate linkage; there are lighter wheels, too. The new fairing, from certain angles, is the spit of the ZX-10R. From the rider’s eye, though, it’s better still. Kawasaki were keen to maintain a novice-friendly, upright riding position so although peg position is unchanged from the ER-6f’s the Ninja has stylish, raised, new clip-on bars which give a natural, upright, slightly canted gait. But it’s how the new Ninja goes that’s best of all. Upright, slim, conspicuously lighter and with a more flexible engine that

pulls willingly anywhere between 4000 and 8000rpm. Novices will love it. At speed that lightness and balance add up to a bike that’s phenomenally nimble yet secure. With the screen also adjusted to its highest setting it’s a decent tourer, too.

The Street Bob – inspired by the post-World War 2 bobber movement – takes minimalist styling to the limit. This is a solo-only bike with a low seat height of just 680mm, mini

ape-hanger bars, a classic fuel tank and chrome-laced wheels – all on the Dyna chassis platform. It’s one of the purest bobbers on the market – perfect simplicity.

Based on the running gear of the Sportster 1200, the Roadster is Harley’s take on a cafe racer. It comes with inverted forks and a seat that apes a kind of cafe racer tail

and, although the motor is the same 1200cc parallel twin-cylinder High Torque motor lifted from the Bonneville T120 (with its 10,000-mile service intervals), it makes 10% more power and torque at 4500pm. And the Bobber actually goes, corners and steers like a sweet-handling roadster. It’s hard not to be in a constant state of disbelief that something that looks like this performs so well. The slip-assist clutch is light and accurate, the throttle response flawless

unit, if you squint. Hard. The 19-inch front and 18-inch rear make it one of the better handling Sportsters and the air-cooled engine is stacked full of charm.

Classic single clock is angle-adjustable and the gears slip effortlessly through the six-speed box. It may look unbalanced, but it feels short and squat, steers lightly and carves through corners and over bumps with the poise of a Thruxton R. Truly impressive.

It also features a mini wind deflector and dual halogen headlights. Another recent addition is the excellent Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine (the CVO version also comes with
