The pole of choice for World Champions William Raison and Steve Ringer, the new AIR XLS is at the very pinnacle of top flight long pole technology and joins a long list of Daiwa legends such as the Tournament Pro – but just what’s changed to make the XLS better than the original AIR? Very similar to the original AIR, it’s in the final three sections of the pole (16m,
14.5m and 13m) where advancements have been made with XLS technology, new carbon and a longer mandrel resulting in each section measuring 10cm longer than the previous AIR. That adds up to a super-responsive pole on the strike or when positioning rigs. Bounce is non-existent, and recovery from a missed bite achievable in a split second – all important demands from anglers fishing at the highest level. The AIR XLS is a true 16m pole with no cutting back or mini extensions required. Each of the Match top-3 kits come with
a tip bore of 2.05mm that’s already cut to take a PTFE bush and accommodate up to a No6 solid elastic. The brand new Powerlite Interlastic top-2 kits are also lighter than previous kits. And just as with the original AIR, Daiwa has continued its More Power and More Match top kit packages to suit the type of fishing you do. This means three Match top-3 kits and seven of the Powerlite top-2 kits come with the Power package. The Powerlites include Daiwa’s Interlastic side puller system, and there’s also a short No4 section.
Pick the More Match set-up, though, and you’ll get just two Powerlite tops alongside an impressive eight Match top kits (four top-3 kits and four top-4 kits for deeper river swims). The finish of each section is sublime, with sections 8, 9, 10 and 11 having their super smooth Diamond Satin finish plus ITS finish on sections 5, 6 and 7. Everything comes in a tubed holdall. You can also get the XLS as a 13m package featuring the pole plus three Match top-5 kits, cupping kit, Phex mini extension and pole holdall for £2,999.

THE out-and-out carp model in the Acolyte pole range, this stunning pole is built on the same mandrel as the Acolyte. This gives it it a super-slim profile with a careful blend of ultra-high modulus (UHM) carbon and resins to make the pole impressively strong and powerful enough to put your shoulder into big carp. Sometimes performance can be lacking when poles are beefed up to deal with big fish – but not here. The Acolyte Carp is stiff enough to hit bites quickly and there’s a great deal of rigidity and recovery to make the pole bang on for shallow ‘slapping’ tactics in the height of summer. Available in three true lengths (13m, 14.5m and 16m), no skinny tip sections need to be binned. There’s

Designed for a rugged day’s fishing on commercial waters, the pole features a higher grade of carbon than its 11m predecessor and

For the larger 4.5mm and 5.4mm PTFE bushes, some tip trimming will be needed, but we’re talking mere centimetres here to leave you with a pole that’s still close to the stated length. These bigger bushes are aimed at use with thick hollow elastics. Two large-diameter cupping kit adaptor threads are also supplied. These will ensure that your cupping kit is the same chosen length as your top kits. The top kit selection is made up of a standard Match top-2 kit and a
pair of top-2 Carp kits, plus a Double Two Carp kit. TOUTED as the best pole ever made by Garbolino, get your hands on the UK1 and you’ll see just why it’s got that accolade – this is a serious pole for the angler that takes their fishing with equal seriousness! Unlike some other poles, all the UK range of poles have been designed as pure 16m models as opposed to a 13m pole that then has sections added, thus producing a drop in rigidity and balance. MAP TKS 2G POLE SERIES SAME mandrels, better performance – that’s the buzz around MAP’s new TKS range. This second generation of a pole family offers a model for every budget alongside a host of new features and improved strength and rigidity across the board. Those originals packed versatility, power and awesome rigidity and soon became a hit with pleasure and match anglers. MAP has carried on this philosophy into the G2 poles, using the same mandrels for production. That means old and new poles are interchangeable – good news if you’re a current TKS owner looking to make an upgrade.

The numbering system of poles has remained the same, with models 101 at the entry level end through to the thoroughbred 801, but top kits have changed in terms of the power you require from them, achieved via a simple grading system. Grade V1 is MAP’s cheapest kit and is packaged with the TKS 101 to 301 poles, while V2 top kits are made from a higher grade of carbon and seen in the 401 and 501 models, leaving the premium-grade V3 top kits for the 601, 701 and 801 poles. None require any drilling to fit side puller systems, as both Power and Match kits come pre-fitted with the new MAP Slotted Side Puller Bush
system. This bush takes the original idea of a curved design which centralises the elastic within the top kit and puts it into a totally new package that is fitted via an engineered slot, so you can elasticate the pole straight away. The top kits will fit any TKS pole ever made. They’re all pre-bushed as well, and when you buy a TKS 2G pole you get a selection of Match and Power kits. The match tops come with a No1 tip section to take smaller bushes and lighter elastics. This makes a three-piece kit, but if you wish, the No1 section can be removed and bushed to take a heavier elastic for power work.

Sharing many of the advanced features found on Browning’s market-leading Xitan poles, the 10-08, like all Silverlites, has some unique features specifically designed for silverfish work including pre-bushed two-piece top kits with 3mm and 3.9mm tip diameters to suit light solid and medium hollow elastics. WHEN two poles that are out and out best-sellers in Italy reach these shores, you have to sit up and take notice – after all, the Italians, alongside the French, have vast experience on the pole scene. So the Tubertini Concept range could be a quite interesting addition to a sea of UK poles built for commercial carp waters or as all-rounders. Used by top international anglers across the Continent and a growing band in Ireland, all four poles in the series are perfect for the UK big-fish and carp market as they’ve been designed for catching catfish and carp on Italian rivers as well as the growing number of Carpodromes, or commercials as we call them. Strongest of the lot is the Extreme, a pure full-blooded battle pole. The Concept Ice Strong tones things down a little for more general carp fishing with standard rigs. The Carp Light is a not a 100 per cent carp pole, but is capable of performing beautifully on rivers
