‘‘DESIGNING IS A NEVER ENDING JOURNEY’’ -Ar. Sim Wei Hang

Personal Design Statement People once asked me, ‘’Why did you choose architecture?’’ I couldn’t think a better answer. It was because of my passion towards ‘’Ballroom & Latin dancing’’, my childhood was basically full of movement & never stop discovering. Dancing and arts was my everything during my younger days. My couch once told me `Beautiful things doesn’t come easy, we have to work hard & fight hard for what we wanted to achieve in the end`, this motivates and I’ve learned that nothing comes easy in life to achieve what we want. My interest in this sector was discovered where I was introduced to architecture during in my high school days. It took me a few years to realize what is architecture really is. Eventually, my stepfather invited me to work in his firm while waiting to enter college and deciding what I really wanted to do. From that onwards, I clearly see a picture of how an architect really create visual and objects into real size scale buildings. I was amazed and looked forward to it. Ever since that happened, that was where I decided to enter college directly choosing a path where I wanted to walk down. I was deeply attracted over architecture ever since I stepped into college in the age of 18. I was keen to the day would come like `How could it be if these building were able to be constructed`. As I know architecture is like a frozen music, and a nice building is a beautiful poem ever composed on the fragment ground as it have been built. I understand each building serves it owns purposes, but it also could be an inspiration towards the public as I discovered. A beautifully constructed installation should be one where people would invest their time to just stand and stare at it for several hours just to grasp the message of the architects or designers trying to deliver. In the process of 4 years studying as an undergraduate in architecture in Taylor’s University, I regard it as a process of fundamental education in which architectural theories and approaches to both classical and modern architecture are comprehensively taught By virtue of my keen interest and diligence in acquiring knowledge, during the four-year studies in the university, I have made excellent achievements in my academic studies as achieving as much awards as possible and while gaining architecture working experiences throughout the years. From my point of view, the five-year study is not only a long process of accumulating knowledge, but a continuous and happy spiritual journey as well. Having the imagination of creating new things ignites my creativity and makes me feel there always a tomorrow for new discovery. My interest slowly begun to grow from those days onwards till what I had become now. No matter what I have learned is about basic cartography, model-making, or understanding the architectural thoughts put forward by both eastern and western masters on architecture through my own practice and experiments, I can always find delight in studies and a passion for creation. Meanwhile, I have also learned to enjoy the joys brought about by architectural designing and put my heart into it through my personal practice. Therefore, by applying my in-depth studying of theories to practice, I have benefited a great deal in my academic studies. As I was coming to the bottom line of this personal statement, I couldn’t help thinking of the little and delicate hands when I was a young boy, together with the scene of my parents watching me dancing in international level of competition with all my passion in it would lead me where I am today. At that time, I must have imagined that, someday in the future, the one little gentlemen would sure grow independently to achieve what is needed, and would ultimately write the most beautiful architectural poems from the ground with his wild imaginations. Designing is a never ending journey` –Ar. Sim Wei Hang, my father.

THE MESSAGE 27th JAN 2101 Dear Mama, I wonder if you can hear me if I stare long enough into the black sky. I miss you, and it feels like my world is slowly being engulfed by the dark. How I wish I’d hold you longer close to me. It hadn’t been a day since you left but I felt so empty already.

The virus is spreading so quickly around the globe. Having you near us would be dangerous. I know you had to leave us to keep us all safe. You were always so selfless mama. Being the superwoman you are, I am sure that you would be able to help them find the antidote for this. I know I’ll have to face it and let go, but not today.

Give me some time to grieve. I hope one day I would be able to hug you again. Until then don’t worry mama, you are kept safe. Safe at the moon.

THE FACTORS Mama, The population on earth has reach more than 20 billion and it is still rapidly increasing. There is barely enough land for the living, what else the dead? The sea level has risen and there is so much pollution on earth now leaving so little space for us to live. The Virus that is induced from overpopulation and pollution is spreading quickly. As more people die because of it, the quicker it spreads since the virus is from a chemical that dead corpse produce as they decay. The only solution now is to stop the bodies from decaying by bringing these bodies to the moon where there is no oxygen to allow the decaying of the bodies.

65

THE SOLUTIONS Researches are still being conducted up there to find the antidote. The only deduction they have gotten is that the virus is from the dead corpses. To study that, they will need a living body. Since bodies would not decay, it would buy researches more time to study the cause of the virus spreading. Soon mama, when they find the cure, you won’t just be my hero, you’ll be everyone’s hero. I am sure you’d understand that it left us no choice but to keep you in space instead. It might be far away from home, from me, but they discovered that because of the absence of oxygen on the moon, you won’t decay.

66

STAGE 1 : THE JOURNEY It was nerve wrecking as I took a step into the climber and it began to move. A strong upward thrust lifted us off the ground and shot us up into the infinite sky. With the loud whirring and clanking machinery sound at the background, I shut my eyes firmly and within seconds, I couldn’t feel my legs anymore. We were out of what they called the geostationary orbit. Without the gravity pull, the view lay around us was even more surreal and hypnagogic – an immense field of mysterious darkness as if we just entered another dimension. A dimension where moon was the destination, mama.

The captain turned on the artificial gravity in the climber as it ascending slowly towards the moon following a long and sturdy cable. My fingers wrapped around your cold hands and I were no longer afraid but feeling calm. Perhaps this inner peace came from the silence of the vacuum-stated cosmos or perhaps it just came from the fact that I knew you will be resting peacefully and eternally on moon.

DESIGN IDEAS 68

THE SECTION 1. Upon reaching the moon, we went our separate ways. You were taken to the Quarantine Room where there are researchers get the bodies clean and ready to be sent to the Research Labs. I was restricted from going into the rooms but Professor told me that they did a quick scan on you for their study and keyed you into the system. You were brought to a sacred room underground through a tunnel where you would be kept safely with the others here.

2. I still remember every time I lifted my foot to take a step, I felt I was being pulled off the ground. Along with others, I walked a long way before being channelled to The Main Hall. The hall is a massive glass dome that houses the lobby. It branches out into different tubes that hold different functions of the cemetery base. Standing in the hall full of people, I still felt like as if I was alone. Looking up, it is the pitch black empty sky again.

3. After I changed into a space suit, I exited the dome and ventured out to the moon surface. I took a deep breath and made my way to the eternal resting place. This place is your new home here in this moontopia, mama. Before I entered The Crate, there was a keyboard where I found my fingers running on it keying in your name.

7. I’ve learnt to face what has become, face the world again. I was ready to be reconnected with the world. After learning to let go and being disconnected for a while, walking up to the surface of the moon, even though we all stand side by side on the platform in silence, we felt reconnected. The openness of the space allowed us to feel free. Our journey on the mood has almost come to an end.

4. The eternal resting place was one of the other tens smaller domes that scattered around the Main Hall. As I stepped into it, a lid on the ground slowly slide away revealing a hole. Mama, it was the most beautiful sight on the moon seeing you coming out of that tunnel. The shaft of lights beaming through the openings on the dome, shining around you guided me towards you. As I walked down the high steps, I felt as if I was floating towards you mama. You look so beautiful even with your eyes closed. I held your cold hands again. Your body felt hard but I was happy I got to hold you again and embrace you in my arms.

5. I was reluctant to let go but I knew that it would not be the last time I could hold you. I stepped into a dark tunnel where only dim lights on the floor led me to an empty room. In the darkness and silence, I felt the emptiness and the loneliness. There was barely much light so I ran my fingers across the wall and I felt the cold regolith texture on the wall. The desolation of the room allowed me to have my own space and disconnect from the world for a little while. It was a shell where I felt protected in a vulnerable state.

6. I knew you wouldn’t want me to be sad for long mama. I picked myself up and I continued my journey. The next room was brightly lit. The movement of people through the spaces made me feel more alive. The beam of light penetrating the walls gave us all a sense of hope in this silence.
