This thesis aims to experiment an alternative architectural design with structural tectonics. It is a experience pioneering tectonic configurations while constructing an innovative synthesis between the need for urban expansion and sustainable responses to rising environmental concerns, within the framework of an ‘ecological civilization’.

tectonic

being between one thing, condition. NOUN : relating to building or construction ADJECTIVE : the beauty of a structural elements. With no ornamentation, the structure can become architectural features

Links and Hub is the theme of this thesis. The link is the circulation flow and the axis, while the hub is the central point with the most hierarchy. There is a river as the natural axis. By creating a man-made axis by footbridge and pedestrian walk, the residential zone and the riverside have been connected. The Sports center act as the circulation hub for social communication. The architectural tectonics of the truss create dynamics and momentum to the site which can respond to the site surrounding.

This thesis aims to experiment an alternative architectural typology for co-living residential programme, especially for a dense urban fabric like Hong Kong. "In-between" space is targeted as a main element in the project to explore a new relationship between public and private.

in-between

being between one thing, condition. ADJECTIVE : Intermediate. in the middle between two points, in the period of time, which separates two different times or event. NOUN : An intermediate: conservatives, radicals.

In-between is an abstraction of space, which takes an internediate relationship between different programme. It is a space usually gets dark as we move in from in front, but we try to somehow feed natural sunlight into the back and produce deep space. I would like to break the podium-tower topology and maximize public space in most condition. The development contains 4 towers and connected with a footbridge. The towers create dynamics and momentum to the site which can respond to the site surrounding.

1. Exctent building edges to creat public space and site potential.

2. Apply this design strategy to master layout planning.

3. Pedestrian bridges connect to the government centre with circulation.
