Hi all, It’s the February edition and love is in the air... except in our Legal Column on page 38. Anne-Marie Hamer, our legal writer and Solicitor at Evans & Greaves in Caerphilly asks whether Infidelity is a justification for Murder! The article caught me by surprise I can tell you! I posted some information about the article on my Facebook page (in January) and a bright spark suggested I should run the article next to a Patio advert - whoops!

Caerphilly events update
Hi all, 2012 has got off to a busy start in the office with the Events Team working on forthcoming events, which this year kicks off even earlier! This year we are celebrating St. David’s Day on a much bigger scale with events taking place on Thursday 1st March in four of the county borough’s main town centres, namely: Caerphilly, Blackwood, Bargoed and Risca. Each of the town centres will have an outdoor concert featuring local choirs, brass bands and over twenty local schools will be singing and dancing. There will be a Welsh themed stilt walker entertaining crowds at each town centre and local food and drink producers will be showing their produce and offering free samples to taste. All events take place between 12pm and 2pm. For more St David’s Day events and information on town centre concerts visit our website for details. Caerphilly Visitor Guide 2012 is out now with information on the area including where to stay, visit and eat. Pick up copy at The Visit Caerphilly Centre or view an online brochure at www.visitcaerphilly. com. Our Spring/Summer Events Guide will be out soon, jam packed with events from April – September. Pick up a copy from local retail outlets, pubs, cafes and many other outlets from around the middle of March. Plans are afoot for our major events with Big Cheese traders application forms ready to be sent out shortly. We’ve a new ‘Food Festival’ event in Caerphilly town centre on Saturday 26th May, which runs alongside the Olympic Torch Relay. The torch will travel through Caerphilly where residents from across the county borough of Caerphilly will have an opportunity to come along and welcome the Olympic Flame, share in the excitement the relay will bring and celebrate the achievements of the Olympic torchbearers.
More information on the Food Festival and Torch Relay will be posted on our website as event preparations unfold. Bargoed town centre sees the return of the ever popular outdoor cinema on Friday 30th March, the film is yet to be confirmed but will be a family flick to suits all ages. As soon as we have a film confirmed we will let you know. Also, keep an eye out for more details on Bargoed’s Spring Fayre on Saturday 31st March. Get fit this spring by entering ‘Twmbarlwm Trek’ on Saturday 12th May. Choose from three walks to suit all abilities from a gentle 1 - 5 mile canal route to a monster 23 miler across the stunning Twmbarlwm Mountain near Cwmcarn. To get involved take a look at www.visitcaerphilly.com where you can downlaod an application form. If you are looking for things to do in February half term take a look at our full events programme for the forthcoming month on the opposite page. That’s all for now, we’ll bring you more news in the next edition of My Local View! Best wishes,

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly
Valleys Rugby A few weeks ago Owen Smith, the MP for Pontypridd and a good friend of mine, organised a meeting in Pontypool to consider the future of rugby in the Valleys. Many people have felt that the formation of regional rugby teams in Wales has done little, if anything, to help rugby in its heartland, the Valleys. Indeed, some would argue that by there not being a regional club in the Valleys, Valleys’ rugby has actually been significantly weakened over the last few years. Owen’s initiative is intended to address this issue. He has commissioned an excellent piece of research which shows clearly there is not really a mass following for the regional clubs, especially amongst people in the Valleys. As one person who was interviewed for the research said, “the move to regionalism has created a new type of supporter, a ‘regional neutral’ supporter: passionate and loyal to Welsh rugby but not to any individual team”. At the meeting everyone agreed that these were important issues which had to be addressed by those of us who have a strong commitment to rugby in Wales.
There was a consensus that we should explore the possibility of there being a strong Valleys-based club around Pontypridd RFC as a hub, but with other clubs in the Valleys being fully involved. It was also agreed that a meeting should be sought with Roger Lewis, the Chief Executive of the WRU to discuss the way forward. This was clearly an important meeting, attended by a number of MPs from the Valleys as well as representatives of rugby clubs. I would now really appreciate the views of constituents. Working from home I drink a lot more coffee these days. Three or four times a day I find myself in the kitchen spooning instant into a mug, whereas there used to be a time when my morning fix (three teaspoons for that great big wakeup jolt) was all the coffee I drank. It’s not that I’m a caffeine junkie: actually I’m on the decaf now. Much to nobody’s surprise, my Type 2 has arrived as an entirely proper consequence of years of eating and drinking far too much and doing far too little; and as caffeine (so my low-carb diet book informs me, whether trustworthily or not I don’t know) stimulates the production of insulin, I have switched to decaf. I can’t say that I can tell the difference. Nor am I a coffee snob. I’ve always drunk coffee in preference to tea, but only because when I was a teenager I read a book called “How to be Bond” which pointed out that James Bond always drank coffee, never tea, because while coffee was sophisticated tea was common. But I’ve always been fine with instant. One boss of mine would only ever drink “real” coffee, which smelt divine but didn’t taste as good as it smelt. Also, it’s such a faff, whether filter or cafetière, and the end result isn’t so much of an improvement as to justify the labour (to my palate at least). Of course, the real stuff comes out if we have guests round, but other than that the pot gathers dust on the topmost kitchen shelf and the coffee itself is many, many months beyond its best-before date. (And mind you, that same book pointed out that Bond never drank beer either, and for much the same reason. I was never tempted to follow this example and took
enthusiastically to beer long before I was actually allowed to. And anyway, I do drink tea now – I had a bad bout of bronchitis last winter and felt a sudden craving for sweet tea. Nothing could have been more soothing.) No, the reason why I drink so much more coffee nowadays is that basically I’m a lazy hound and always used to dodge the coffee round in the office by pretending that I didn’t want one. The downside of this was that I couldn’t sneak off and make myself a coffee when I actually did want one, so I did without. It’s not entirely laziness, though. Some of the offices I’ve worked in over the years have had kitchens of such unspeakable vileness that you wouldn’t want to go into them, let alone drink anything that came out of them. Washing up, in an office kitchen, is nobody’s job and so is never done. I well remember the kitchen at the old Morning Advertiser offices in Brixton. It crouched in a corner of what had been a huge printworks, all cavernous and echoing since the actual printing had been contracted out years before. But when the printers departed it seems they left their mugs behind, still half-full and never washed since, and all sprouting caps of foul grey mould like beards on corpses. Even the sign that said “please wash your own mug” was mouldy. I am not especially ticklestomached but I would never, in a million years, have put anything that came out of that hell-hole anywhere near my digestive tract. Anyway, one thing I have discovered to be true, although previously I’d pooh-poohed it, is that coffee tastes better if it’s not made with boiling water. So I think I’ll go and have one now. by Ted Bruning

Here’s a delicious winter warming mid-week supper that can be rustled up in less than 40 minutes, We’ve used chicken fillets, but you can use cheaper boneless chicken thighs or try strips of lean sirloin steak or pork fillet instead.
Serv

Read y in 35 m inute s
Chicken Goulash 2 tbsp sunflower oil 600g skinless chicken fillets, thinly sliced 1 red onion, peeled and chopped 200g button mushrooms, wiped 1 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp plain flour 150ml passata (see tip) 150ml chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tbsp soured cream Boiled potatoes, to serve Fresh chopped parsley, to garnish
Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the chicken and onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally until both are lightly browned. Add the mushrooms and fry for a further 2 minutes. Mix together the paprika and flour and stir into the pan. Cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in the passata and stock. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through. Serve topped with soured cream and boiled potatoes. Sprinkle over the chopped parsley to garnish.
TIP
Passata is simply ripe tomatoes that have been pureed then sieved to remove any skin and pips. You’ll find it in jars near the canned tomatoes in the supermarket. You can use a small can of chopped tomatoes instead - just whizz in a food processor or with a hand blender until smooth.

20 Your home is not just the place that you keep your belongings and sleep at night. It is somewhere you feel safe and secure, and where you go to take a break from the outside world. So to be the victim of burglary is to suffer more than simply loss of your property and personal effects; it’s a violation of your sanctuary. Prevention is better than cure so put these measures in place before you are caught out.
Think like a burglar Think like a burglar
Stand outside your property and imagine that you were trying to break in. Where would you start? Flowerpot on the front step? Remove that not-so-secret key that’s underneath. Downstairs loo with the window that is always left open? Buy an air freshener instead! Full height ladder stored at the side of the house? It’s like a written invitation.
Security basics
It doesn’t matter how expensive your alarm system is or how strong your door locks are, if you don’t employ the most basic security measures you are just asking for trouble. As you leave the house or are preparing to go to bed, get into a routine of thinking about each room in turn and whether the windows or doors are likely to have been opened that day. Around 20% of burglaries don’t involve any force – the intruder has simply walked in the unlocked door or climbed through the window. You should extend this mental check to your car and garage too; easily overlooked because they are out of sight once you are indoors. Remember too that more break-ins happen during daylight hours, so vigilance then is every bit as important as night time.
Good locks = good security
Each of your windows should have a key locking mechanism fitted – standard with most double glazed units these days, and the key should be stored nearby but not within reach or visibility of the window itself. If you have nothing like this at the moment, and can’t afford to upgrade your windows just yet, make it a priority to have locks fitted on all the downstairs windows at least. Doors should have a good locking system such as an automatic deadlock or a mortise deadlock. Check too that the frame is solid and the glass panel is laminated.
Be flashy – but only with your security
80% of burglaries are spur of the moment so the only thing you should be showing off is your security measures. Don’t display your worldly goods to attract the opportunists in

the first place. If you have an expensive bike keep it out of sight; don’t leave mobile phones on the windowsill; and don’t leave the empty box for your flashy new flatscreen TV standing by the bin for days. The same rules apply with your car. Don’t think that robbers don’t break in just to steal a handful of loose change. They do.
Tell-tale signs
When you are away from home, don’t leave the curtains drawn all day – nobody does that if they are in the house. Use inexpensive timer switches for table lamps and a radio to come on when it’s becoming dark, both downstairs and upstairs. And ask a friend or neighbour to move your post each day particularly where you have an outside box or you can easily see if the post is ‘on the mat’. These are all basic measures and will go a long way to ensure that your home and property stay safe.

Caerphilly Miners Centre Campaign Goes On
By the time you read this, United Welsh Housing Association and the Caerphilly Miners project will have submitted its application to the Lottery for funding to restore the building. But the campaign to save the original Beeches building of the Caerphilly Miners Hospital, to be reopened as a community centre for everyone to use goes on! These are the things you can do to help us.
Pledge your support
We still need local people to sign the ‘pledge’ to say that they would like the building to be restored. Our target is 5,000 signatures and we have just over 3,000. Could you take a pledge form to work with you or get your neighbours, friends and family to sign? Please pick up a form at the Tourist Information Centre or contact Katherine Hughes, details below.
Volunteering
Local people gave over 1700 hours of voluntary time to the project last year – running events, fund-raising, representing our project, making tea, and even running a half marathon. If you can help in any way, big or small, we’d like to hear from you.

Safer Caerphilly | Six Nations safety campaign
A campaign is underway across Caerphilly county borough to prevent alcohol related crime and disorder in town centres during the Six Nations. Gwent Police and Caerphilly County Borough Council, who are both members of the Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership, will be working together to tackle a range of issues over the coming weeks. Officers are contacting all licensees in the area ahead of the first match on Sunday 5th February to remind them of their role in serving alcohol responsibly. Licensees are also being encouraged to check that their CCTV systems are working correctly. During the tournament, police and trading standards will be visiting licensed premises to check that all door staff are SIA (Security Industry Authority) approved, the premises are safe and adhering to the licensing conditions. Local officers, together with the council’s Community Safety Wardens will also be providing an increased presence in the town centres to deter any crime and disorder on match days. In Blackwood, Caerphilly and Risca town centre, they will be joined by Street Pastors, a group of volunteers who offer care and support to people on nights out on Fridays and Saturdays. Their pastoral role includes helping to prevent people from becoming victims of crime as well as promoting personal and community safety in the town centre. Caerphilly County Borough Council’s CCTV operators will also be working around the clock to monitor the town centres and look out for any incidents of disorder.
Should any occur, they have direct links to Gwent Police officers and the council’s Community Safety Wardens, enabling them to report these immediately. Caerphilly Partnership Inspector Kevin Childs, said: “We want people to enjoy the Six Nations, but to act responsibly when they are out in local pubs and clubs. The majority of people do, and we are working with our partners and the licensing trade to prevent those individuals who drink too much, from going on to cause disorder in our town centres.” Cllr Rob Gough, Cabinet Member for Public Protection said: “I would encourage people out enjoying the Six Nations festivities to work with us to ensure that everyone remains safe. With a traditional increase in alcohol consumption over this period, tempers can occasionally flare, but by acting responsibly and sensibly you will be helping us and our partners to ensure that everyone has a safe, trouble-free and enjoyable time.” Emily Cheasty Neighbourhood Communications Officer. Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery
Could you be an Urban Farmer? Chickens, it seems, are very much on the up’. All over the UK – and most other ‘developed’ countries around the world in fact, families are rediscovering our farming heritage and starting to keep chickens. This fits very comfortably with the messages coming from the folks like the Rt. Honourable Jamie Oliver and friends, pointing us towards healthy lifestyle and healthy food. Families can grow some of their fruit, veg and herbs in pots around the garden, and feed the left overs to the chickens who will oblige by providing an egg each every day or so. There is something very basic and ‘earthy’ about the life lessons that our kids can learn from these ‘hands on’ experiences, these can be character forming and confidence boosting, providing magic moments and lifelong memories that can be passed onto unseen generations to come…now there is a thought –what will all those generations of the future say about the fine folks of the early 21st century?
But we need to keep the process going, give our families and our communities the joy of looking after, and enjoying the tasty benefits, of ‘urban farming’. You may just find they enjoy the experience more than the latest DS (whatever that is?) – hopefully we will be known for something more than the generation who spent hours in front of their computers / ds / smart phones and went to bed feeling unsatisfied – will all they needed to do was … step outside. Lets hope that we are known as the generation who went back outside. What will we be famous for? So many of the new gardeners I talk to around the country, tell me that they remember their Grandad taking them down the veg garden to pick runner beans (or Kidney beans if it is Wales!) Thank heaven for all those Granddads eh? Otherwise this new generation of healthy gardeners might not have gone back to their roots.

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly
Education is, arguably, the most important public service for Government. If we get it right then we lay solid foundations for that young person’s future. But if we get it wrong, then we give that young person the very worst start possible. Educational achievement in Wales is improving. Examination results are getting better. And that’s down to the hard work of teachers, lecturers and students. But what is equally clear is that our performance, when compared with the rest of the UK and most of Europe, shows that we are slipping down that “league table”. In other words those countries are improving faster than us. So what’s to be done?
I accept that the criteria being used can appear complicated, but the Welsh Government has issued guidance for parents to help the understanding. Finally we have to provide the best accommodation that we can for learners. Our ambitious 21st Century Schools building programme had to be re-structured because the UK Government cut our Capital budget by over 40% at the last settlement. Consequently we have little choice other than require local authorities to contribute more than was originally expected. But this was not a shock for any of them because they were aware of the financial situation.
The first thing to do is recognise the truth of this. If we slip into denial then we do a great disservice to our young people and, importantly, we are not then ensuring that the next generation of workers will have the right level of skills to compete in the international market. So we must take action.
Also of course local authorities can raise additional money (through Council Tax and loans) whereas the Welsh Government cannot. So I have to express surprise that CCBC decided to freeze Council Tax and then complain that it didn’t have enough money for its school building programme!
Over the last few years we’ve introduced the Foundation Phase for primary school children, the 14 to 19 Pathways for Secondary school age children, and the Welsh Baccalaureate. All of which have received international plaudits. But perhaps the most recent innovation, the Banding of schools, is causing the most controversy.
I’m confident that we will, over the next few years, see significant improvement in terms of our position in the UK and Europe. But it will demand planning and partnership.
Banding is not the same as League Tables (despite what some political commentators are saying). Rather it is about identifying where improvements need to be made and then requiring local authorities to direct resources accordingly.

30 We all want to turn back the clock when it comes to our ageing skin, but finding ways to lessen the appearance of embedded lines and wrinkles can be hard. So, it’s important to take immediate action to look after your skin through a dedicated daily routine - that will prove to be effective, whatever your age.
Fresh Faced Whatever Your Age Prevention is better than cure, and thanks to the extensive range of products on the market designed specifically to delay and fight the signs of ageing - holding back the years might not be as hard as you’d think. It’s not just about products though, living a healthy lifestyle, eating a diet that’s rich in vitamins A, C and E (found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables) and omega-3 fatty acids (from fish, nuts and seeds) will boost skin from the inside out. And what’s more, remember to keep smiling - it’s an instant face-lift. After all, as fashion designer Coco Chanel famously said, ‘Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.’
In your late 20s and early 30s…
It might seem early, but it pays to establish a skin care regime that will aid in the prevention of visible ageing signs in later life. Remember to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, by using a specially formulated day cream that is guaranteed to safeguard your skin. Always cleanse, tone, exfoliate (image 1) and moisturise (image 2) to eradicate dull patches and ensure a healthy, youthful glow.
In your late 30s and early 40s….
Once you hit your mid thirties you may start to notice the earliest signs of ageing - such as laughter lines, frown lines or wrinkles around the lips. Use an eye cream (image 3) daily to treat and postpone the onset of fine lines around sensitive areas and select a richly moisturising night cream to keep both face and neck thoroughly nourished. It’s essential at this time in your life to commit to paying real attention to looking after your skin, so as to ensure it looks younger and more youthful in years to come.
In your late 40s and early 50s…..
Work on any established wrinkles with targeted products for your problem areas (image 4). Active anti-ageing ingredients are a must at this age, so look for products that contain high levels of antioxidants, retinol or peptides to protect your skin from free-radical damage. Brightening ingredients help to boost radiance and will improve the appearance of mature skin. Try both serums and creams to establish which works best for you.
March 2012 deadline is Wednesday 22nd February
31 In your late 50s and early 60s…
A dull complexion is common in your 60s. Owing to a build-up of dead skin cells due to the skin’s inability to renew itself, the surface can be left looking uneven and lifeless. So regular exfoliation is essential (image 5). Not only will this reveal fresher looking skin, but you will also be creating the ideal base on which to apply your anti-ageing products, ensuring they are absorbed deep into the layers of your dermis. Though be careful not to scrub or use an exfoliant that is too harsh, as this can damage thinning skin already suffering from a reduction in collagen and elastin fibres.
In your late 60s, early 70s and beyond…
As skin is much more demanding at this time of life, it can be hard to manage dry skin and the more established signs of ageing. It is essential to build on the routine you have established throughout previous years by continuing to spend time putting back what ageing takes out. Use intensive and targeted anti-ageing day creams and try face oils at night that will penetrate deep into the skin to provide much needed hydration (image 6).

How to Sleep Better
Sleep is an essential and involuntary process that is vital for maintaining good mental and physical health. One in four people are thought to suffer from sleep problems at some point in their lives, including deprivation and insomnia.
We spend approximately a third of our lives asleep. It is as important to our bodies as eating, drinking and breathing. Sleep helps to repair and restore our brains and bodies. Poor sleep can affect mood, concentration, judgement and reduce our immune system’s ability to fight off minor ailments such as colds and flus. Longterm sleep deprivation can lead to health problems including diabetes, heart disease and clinical depression.
Eat breakfast
Did you know, skipping breakfast can put you on the path to poor sleep? It all starts with eating breakfast within 30-45 minutes of waking, as there is a biochemical link back to our sleep. “Your levels of adrenalin are increased if you do not eat breakfast and your brain starts to shut down non-essential functions including the production of the hormones, serotonin and melatonin,” says sleep expert, Dr Nerina Ramlakhan. “Melatonin is the hormone required at the end of the day to sleep. By skipping breakfast you produce less melatonin and as your adrenalin levels are higher, you will feel more anxious towards the end of the day and therefore less able to sleep.”
Keep a watchful eye on your caffeine and sugar intake
Ensuring you eat healthily and minimise sugary snacks is essential for keeping your brain and body contented. Sugar causes the body to run on a higher energy pattern, which creates highs and lows as the quick-fix energy hit wears off. This, in turn, sparks a need for more sugar in the body via drinks and caffeine. Eating little and often and keeping hydrated with water, herbal teas and fruit juices, while minimising your intake of fizzy drinks and caffeine, will help ready mind and body for sleep. Nerina recommends avoiding caffeine after 2pm each day if you are having trouble sleeping.
Don’t eat too late
Eating your main meal earlier can also help with improving sleep. A large meal can impact on your digestive system and cause heartburn. Leave three hours before having a meal and going to bed.
Make time to unwind
As we rush through each day, balancing a busy lifestyle and juggling responsibilities left, right and centre, finding time for a rest can feel impossible. However, if the mind has no opportunity to process information from the day, it waits until bedtime to recap, when the frantic pace of the day has finally stopped. This results in a poor, restless sleep. Nerina suggests trying to build rest into your day by meditating or power napping. The 15-minute time out from your day will create that internal chemistry that is just right for sleep. Additionally, deal with worries or a heavy workload by making a list of things to be tackled the next day.
Make your bedroom a sleep haven
Create a restful space: your bedroom should be as quiet and dark as possible. “Managing technology is very important as you need a break from TV, computers, emails and mobile phones, before going to bed. Without this break, you are over stimulating your mind and it will be unable to find processing time,” says Nerina. Set boundaries with technology and keep all gadgets out of the bedroom. by Julie Penfold

The Legal Eagle .. Infidelity
Is catching your partner out for committing infidelity justification as a defence for murder/assault? There simple answer is no, but that does not stop the court from considering the infidelity committed as a factor which should be precluded from all the other such factors. The reason this has hit the headlines it that only last week, a High Court Judge gave a judgement ruling on three domestic killing appeals where infidelity had been raised in the background of the crime of murder. The High Court Judge ruled that “where sexual infidelity is integral to and indeed forms an essential part of the context the prohibited does not operate to exclude it”.
Therefore, any criminal act (in this circumstance it refers to murder) arising where the perpetrator thinks they can rely on the defence of knowing of the infidelity that itself does not qualify as a defence. It is instead an “infidelity plus defence”, where it seems that as of last week, the court will look at all the factors/circumstances of the case, but will not rule out the infidelity that has been committed. Over the coming months this is sure to be explored further by the many criminal practitioners.
Article provided by Anne-Marie Hamer Messrs Evans and Greaves Solicitors
What does that really mean? Well, as it stands statute does not allow for infidelity to be used as a “qualifying trigger” capable in law, of causing someone to lose their self-control, but it is a matter of looking at all the circumstances at the time of the crime itself.

Thought for the Month
What is Love?
Now that is a question – isn’t it?!
Do you remember your first Valentine card? I recall sending my first one, when I was about 6 I think, to one beautiful but lightly bossy Gillian Townsend. There was a nervous moment as she opened the card, and tried to ascertain which good looking lad in the class had sent it to her: having looked at all the good looking lads, her eyes eventually fell upon my corner of the room, whereupon her scrutiny eventually came to rest on my nervous and slightly dribbly grin – she laughed, in a “you must be joking” sort of way, and my hopes were dashed for another year! That was my first lesson in Love – it can hurt! A decade later, we studied the Classic ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and I saw a similarity between the still dribbly and grinning teenage Roger and the helpless romantic Romeo – we were both ‘in love with being in love’. No small wonder really when we look at how TV, books, films etc. portray this thing warm fuzzy and slightly magical thing they call love.
So many young couples get disappointed when after a year or two the warm fuzzies have faded, the butterflies have fluttered away, and ‘the birds have stopped signing’ … hopefully that is when we discover the ‘Love which lasts’ … and that is a love worth waiting for. The Bible tells us of 3 different types of love – this ‘Love that lasts’ is referred to as Agape love, and it is the Love that GOD tells us he has for us. It is love that is not just based on feelings, or good looks, or because we do something, indeed anything, for Him – it is a Love that says despite all the stuff you do, I am choosing to Love you. For ever.

History of Llanbradach Bowling Club
44
Llanbradach Bowls Club was established in 1901.We have been looking at the history of the club and this month the focus on the years 1926 - 1929. 1926: The club received a bill of 10/- from the workman’s hall for the rent of the light. The WBA handbook was printed for the first time in 1926. Sid Perriman 18 was fined 5/- for not having any lights on his bike whilst riding through the village. 1928: Moved to have an electricity meter fitted in club after receiving a bill from the Hall for £2.2/-. The club employed a cleaner, Miss Barnet, to set up clean the club once a week, wages were 2/6. Other purchases during that year included, a stove purchased for the pavilion 25/6, lawn mower £9-14-9p, the ladies were given 5/- travel expenses to by crockery in Cardiff. WBA subs were £2-2.0 and £9 donated to the table tennis team. Lady Bowlers from Beechwood Newport along with other ladies from Glamorganshire and Monmouth get together to form the South Wales and Monmouth BA.
1929 Sex Bias in Bowls: Until last year the annual bowls match between Edmonton Urban District Council and Pymmes Park was an important and popular event of the local calendar.
But last year ladies (on the council for first time ) were included in the Council Team and this led to some players of the opposite sex on either side boycotting the match. This years match is fixed to be played on September 7 but the Pymmes Park Club committee have sent a letter (signed by all members) to the Council stating that if ladies are included in their team then the club members will refuse to play and the game will have to be abandoned. Despite this threat invitations have been sent to all 27 members of the Council inviting them to play the game. Enthusiastic Women Bowlers- Several Cardiff ladies are determined that this is the last year that the leading Cardiff bowling clubs shall be restricted to men members. “Is it fair “ the wife of the Captain of a prominent Cardiff Bowling Club said, that at Beechwood Park, Newport Windsor, Penarth, Dinas Powis and Merthyr Bowling Club there are women members yet we are not allowed to play. As a special concession one club has offered to let us play in the afternoons! it just shows how far behind the times the Cardiff men are she concluded.
