Hi all, Last month I mentioned that I had visited the Senghenydd Heritage Museum, set up to raise awareness of the tragic loss of 439 miners and one rescuer in 1913. Of the 439 miners who tragically lost their lives in 1913, 33 still remain entombed in the mine. On the 13th October this year, like most of the population, I was completely wrapped up in the Chilean Mining rescue. I watched the rescue of at least half of the miners and marvelled at the technological feat enabling the success extraction of all of the miners - all 33 of them! It is obvious that our miners could not have been rescued the same way, as the technology did not exist, but am I the only one who finds it a little profound that the number rescued was 33? It feels to me that a life was saved in Chile for every life we lost! I hope you enjoy reading this issue of My Local View and a quick thanks for the positive phone calls and emails this month. I am already busy working on the December issue and feeling rather festive. Best Wishes

Working from home Moving House by Ted Bruning

This has to be one of the worst things in the world. Barbarians raiding your village, killing all the men, enslaving the women and children, trampling the standing corn and driving off the livestock are not (trust me, I’m a historian) worse than this. The earth suddenly changing its direction of rotation and flipping us all off into outer space is not worse than this. Really. Well, not really. But I think all workers from home will agree with me when I say that one of the worst things that can happen to you is moving house. It’s disruptive enough when a company moves offices, but when (a) you have to organise everything yourself and (b) it’s not just desks and filing cabinets that have to go but beds, chairs, tables, garden furniture, kitchen appliances, crockery, glasses, pictures and goodness knows what else besides that has to move too... well, suffice it to say that this is the first time I’ve sat down to do any paying work for days. And I’m only being allowed time off from wrapping plates in old newspaper (none of which I have sent to the recycling for weeks, so the house is virtually waist-deep in the stuff) after arguing forcibly that if I don’t work now, we’ll all be out on the street in six weeks’ time when there are no invoices to chase. Not that doing any paid work is terribly practical at the moment. Once our buyer had his mortgage offer I eagerly anticipated exchanging in a few days and completing a few days after that; and to get myself well ahead I plunged into packing. So did I sit down first and put together a rational, ordered schedule of what to pack and when? Of course I didn’t! Who do you think I am?! No, I just got stuck in, buying a whole load of boxes and stuffing them energetically with the first things that came to hand – these being all the contents of my library. Now, I should explain that a large part of my living involves historical research, so the walls of my “office” (converted unheated garage) are lined with bookshelves, all of them groaning under the weight of fat academic tomes. Well, they were groaning under the weight of fat academic tomes. Now they’re glaringly,

shockingly empty. They’ve even been dusted. And the said fat academic tomes are all securely duct-taped into cardboard boxes bought from the removal firm, which are probably too heavy to move without a fork-lift and whose bottoms will probably burst the moment anyone tries to pick them up. Very orderly of me, you might think. But no. The buyer’s mortgage offer has fallen through, the move is likely to be delayed by two or three weeks at least, and all the resources I need to do anything with are inside those securely duct-taped cardboard boxes that I didn’t have the prescience to label, except in the most general terms (ie, “books”). I did once attempt, in a moment of need, to retrieve a particular book but after what seemed like hours of digging and quarrying amid plumes of dust I gave up. So here I sit, bored and disconsolate: can’t do much in the way of work, don’t see the point in doing any more packing, I’ve walked the dog, done the dishwasher, hung a wash out, put another wash in... Damn it.

Deadline for our December issue is Weds 24th November

I’m off down the pub.

Caerphilly events update

Can’t someone put the brakes on ?!?!? That is what the events team feel like shouting at the moment in the office! Can you all believe how quickly Christmas is coming around writes SarahKate Ackerman. To complement the Christmas Events programme we will be introducing a ‘Dickensian Christmas Market’ in Blackwood Town Centre on the 4th & 5th December. Our first ever Christmas Market in Blackwood promises to be jam packed with fun. There will be over 40 stalls in the High Street along with family funfair rides. We also have carol singers, Dickensian costume characters (such as Scrooge – and I’m hoping Tiny Tim!) a Dickensian Gent riding a penny farthing, this is to name but a few – oh, I will also let you in to another secret…..we have a REAL reindeer coming on the Sunday of the event!!! Won’t the kids just love that? Next up is our Medieval Christmas Market in Caerphilly. This takes place the following weekend on the 11th & 12th December. This event has grown year on year and has such a lovely atmosphere to it. With over 150 stalls situated in the town centre, Castle, Farmers’ Market and Continental Market you will no doubt be able to find that unusual Christmas gift. There is plenty of entertainment booked in for this event such as Medieval beggars, fire performer, stilt lady, Medieval actors and much more. There will also be cookery demonstrations in Caerphilly Visitor Centre from top local chef Angela Gray.

including Punch and Judy, ceramic workshops and Santa’s Grotto. After browsing the shops and stalls, why not join in with their lantern parade through the High Street which finishes in Hanbury Road car park for their fireworks finale. Bargoed also have their own unique attraction….An open air ice rink!! This is the first open air ice rink in Greater Bargoed and will really set the scene for a fabulous Christmas atmosphere. Why do we need to go over the mountain to Cardiff when we can find everything we need in our own towns? Also to help your spending go further, traders in Blackwood, Caerphilly and Bargoed have kindly offered discount vouchers to be used on their respective weekends! These vouchers can be obtained during the event from any official steward. Let me finish off with telling you about the long established River of Light Parade in Caerphilly on the 23rd December. This parade always proves very popular and we see regular participants turn out year after year. Again this will culminate with a fabulous fireworks display at Caerphilly Castle. Join in the workshops at Caerphilly Leisure Centre on 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th & 19th December, where you can create your own lantern for the parade. Don’t forget to take a look at our website www. caerphilly.gov.uk/christmas to see all the activities going on, there is much more out there such as pantomime in Blackwood Miners’ Institute, Santa’s Grotto at Cwmcarn Forest – the list goes on and on ! Look out for our Christmas Events Guide, we are aiming to get them into as many shops in our County Borough as possible. Here’s a peak at the cover so you know what to look out for…. Best wishes to all. Sarah-Kate Ackerman Events & Marketing Officer, Advisory Services, Economic Development, CCBC www.visitcaerphilly.com

Moving up the valley the following weekend (on Saturday 18th December) sees Bargoed host their own Christmas Market. There’s a lot going on at this event…….they have craft stalls, children’s activities Deadline for our December issue is Weds 24th November

Goal Setting and the Power of Focus

This is the second of several bite size self-help articles I’m offering to Local View readers to help you shake free of the thoughts and behaviours stopping you from achieving the things you want – the happiness, the wealth, the health. This month we look at goal setting and the power of focus.

Do you ever hear yourself saying things like… “that’ll never happen” or “if only…” or my personal favourite “when <something> then I’ll do/get/have…” You are not alone! Listen closely to what you’re saying to yourself… you are actually putting obstacles in your own way! Here are 3 simple steps to shift your success.

Step 1. Get clear of what you want. People say ÒI donÕt want to smoke anymoreÓ, but this isnÕt what they want itÕs what they donÕt want. State what you DO want positively, write it down and put it up on the fridge door or somewhere youÕll see it everyday. For example ÒWhat I really want is to be a non-smokerÓ Step 2. Get Grateful Ð Think about all the things, people, experiences in your life you can feel grateful for. What could you feel grateful for if you wanted to? When you fill your mind and heart with gratitude there is no room for fear. Gratitude will lead you to excitement if you let it, and excitement can lead you to take action.

Step 3. Get Resourceful - What skills do you have?, what knowledge?, who do you know that can help you? You have probably forgotten or take for granted many of the resources you have available to youÉ remember them, you are incredible. Whatever or whoever you think you are, believe me you are so much more! More tips and guidance is available at www.dare2dreamnow.co.uk

16 Colour Coordinated Eyebrows We all know the lift we get from changing our hair colour, but how many of us consider the effect this has on other facial tones? One of the areas where a different hair colour can result in a look less flattering than we’d hoped is when our eyebrows no longer match our hair shade. A new blonde with almost black brows, or a stunning brunette with brows too pale to match, makes it all too obvious the hair colour isn’t natural. As a general rule, our eyebrows naturally complement the colour of our hair, so a change on top may require a change of brow shade. If the new hair colour is black, eyebrows should be a just a touch lighter, a deep dark brown. If going for a red or brown crowning glory, you need eyebrows of a darker hue. Now blonde or light brown? Your brows should be medium brown. Of course, darkening brows has never been a problem because of the many products available, but if you need to lighten your brows (or decide to dye them to avoid having to use pencils, powders or gels) then I would advise seeking professional help from a qualified beautician, as this would be the safest route to take. Should you decide to do it yourself, do make sure that you use a safe dye for eyebrows, one specifically marked as such – and be very careful, as some of the products can cause irritation or even damage the eyes.

Self-employed – Your tax bill need not be a time bomb waiting to explode. Follow the tips below and you will avoid penalties…. and pay less tax! Article by Alan Jones We are at that time of year again where tax deadlines for the self-employed loom large and they are forced to think about how much they will have to pay and, worse still, where will the money come from. Of course we all intended to sort our tax bill out in plenty of time, but accountants are expensive, we have been too busy, and we have preferred to put the thought of a nasty tax charge to the back of our mind. The tax man sees you as an easy target! As we are all aware, there are big cut backs in Government spending. As part of this policy the Revenue is under great pressure to collect in as much tax as possible. They see the self-employed as an easy way of getting money. If you don’t pay up on time they can now charge heavy penalties - Penalties for late payment start at £100 and can go up to £60 per day! - HMRC can appear on your doorstep with 24 hours notice and demand access to your business records. Not keeping good business records can result in a whopping £3,000 fine. Take control, avoid stress and save money 1) Offset all the business expenses you are entitled to – most self-employed over pay tax because they are not aware of all they are entitled to offset. This often happens even if they

have an accountant. Take time to visit www.ajeasytax123. co.uk and try out the free tax health check questionnaire. You may be surprised at all you could be claiming. 2) Calculate your tax return as soon as possible – Remember, the basis for your tax liability due by end Jan 2011 was the profit to the year to 5th April 2010. If you had worked out your liability in April or May you may have avoided some of the payment on account in July 2010. Also, the sooner you know the figures the more chance you have to save for the payment 3) What if you can’t pay? Get a tax return in. Not communicating with HMRC is guaranteed to put their backs up. They have a Business Payment Support Service and will listen to reasonable payment proposals from any sole trader who is struggling. It is in their interest to do so as they are more likely to get their money that way. 4) You may actually be owed money. If you have had a downturn in business this year (and many have), then you may have overpaid your payments on account and be due money back.

Don’t let the taxman hang on to your money longer than necessary. You may also be due Working Tax Credits if you are a single person and earn less than £13,000 (couples £18,000). The Government estimates as many as 2 million people are due them but don’t claim. Another alternative for the low paid is a charity www. taxaid.org.uk where you may qualify for free help. Act now and make tax one less thing to worry about.

That’s a Funny Thing to Say!

Lark about – Play the fool, act mischievously. Possible origins of the phrase are varied, including a definition from an AngloBengali Dictionary of 1802 (mudlarks or skylarks being young children playing on the shore line). A naval version relates to young boys ‘larking about’ in the rigging while several local English dialects take variations from the aerial acrobatics of the skylark.

Lock, stock and barrel – Totally, completely, everything included. The earliest usage of this expression appears around the start of the 19th century. It was a military term used in the context of the armoury and firearms. The lock (or firing mechanism), stock (or butt) and barrel are the three principal components of a gun. Soldiers issued with a musket were given the complete weapon – lock, stock and barrel.

A complete shambles – Disorder, ruin, mess. The word ‘shambles’ is very old. As early as AD825 the Old English word Scomul (later shamble, meaning footstool) derived from the Latin Scamellum, meaning ‘small bench’. By the 10th century this became ‘bench for the sale of goods’ and by 1305 ‘stall for the sale of meat’. Many towns including Nottingham and York (where the street - The Shambles can be found) had their meat markets, or Shambles, and they were always stinking, chaotic and overcrowded. On the button – Right on target, to hit the bullseye. ‘On the button’ is a 20th century phrase and from the USA. It is from a term used in sport, boxing in particular. The ‘button’ in question is the US slang term for the point of the chin. The phrase started being used around the end of WWI in commentaries on boxing matches.

Neighbourhood Policing

YOUR LOCAL CRIME AND DISORDER REDUCTION OFFICER PC Andy Hillier is the Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer (CADRO) for Bedwas and Caerphilly. We caught up with him to find out more about his role and his top tips for staying safe…

I also offer crime prevention advice to residents on current issues.

What does being a CADRO involve?

We have seen an increase in the number of house burglaries in the area. So I would encourage people to always lock their front and back doors, as well as their windows before they go out and before they go to bed. Even if you’re at home during the day, it’s a good idea to lock the door and take the keys out of the back of the lock.

I work with the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams to review local hot spot areas for anti-social behaviour and crime trends.

What sort of advice are you currently offering to the community?

It’s also important that you keep valuables out of view as well. With Christmas approaching people will start putting presents under the tree, but remember to draw your curtains at night when you have the lights on so people can’t see in.

I also deal with all of the Anti-Social Behaviour Order referrals for the area, which includes sending out letters to parents if their child has come to the attention of police, working with partners to put preventative measures in place and preparing paperwork for court.

If you have a house alarm, then remember to set it and consider installing external movement-sensitive lighting. What is your top crime prevention tip? It’s simple really – as I’ve already mentioned, always remember to lock your doors and windows on your home and on your vehicle, and never leave items on view.

Window Dressing

ZAC ZAC

Windows are everywhere in your home and whether they have an attractive view or not, they deserve to have something special to ‘wear’. Do you want curtains or blinds? Look at the style of your home and complement that. Blinds give neat, modern and simple lines while curtains provide an impression of warmth and softness. When choosing curtain fabric, ensure you don’t skimp on the quantity as too little will spoil the effect. Tie backs are practical as well as decorative, especially if there’s a lot of material in your curtains. The amount of curtain fabric needs to be at least twice as wide as your window. If you have small windows, choose a longer curtain rail to extend further across the wall space. Floor length drapes also make windows appear larger and create an overall look of luxuriousness. CAERPHILLY (029) 2080 7711 For French windows or those with a fabulous view, don’t let the curtains draw attention away from the vista. Wayne David MP

A new job, new challenge It was Saturday afternoon at about 12:30pm that I received a phone call from Ed Miliband, the new Leader of the Labour Party. Ed had rung me up to ask if I would become Labour’s Shadow Minister for Europe. I readily accepted and I said that I considered it to be an honour to be asked. For the past 18 months or so I have been both the Labour Wales Office Minister and, in opposition, the Shadow Minister. Working with my colleague Peter Hain MP I enjoyed the Welsh job and, I believe, I did it well. The Europe job, however, is a more senior position and represents a new challenge. For 10 years I was a Member of the European Parliament, representing South Wales, and since being elected to Westminster I have maintained an interest in all things European. I therefore believe I have the experience and qualifications for the job. In my view Britain needs a positive relationship with the European Union. That is not to say that we have to meekly accept everything that comes from Brussels; on the contrary, we have to be firm and resolute in pursuing our national interest.

But we don’t do it by “banging the table” and throwing tantrums. Our approach must be based on rational argument, backed up by resolute diplomacy. There can be no doubt that it would be a huge mistake for Britain to withdraw from the European Union. Too many jobs depend on us having easy access to the European Single Market. The ConDem Government is talking tough, but failing to deliver. On the one hand the Government is trying to buy off eurosceptics in the Tory Party with bloodcurdling rhetoric and at the same time it is saying to its Liberal Democrats that it doesn’t really mean what it says. The result is that other European governments are failing to take the Government seriously and the country is losing out. Labour’s job is to point this out and advocate a different approach.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Time to get fruity Reproduction….always a good conversation starter! In the ‘love life’ of plants, the key to success is pollination – and that is never more important than with fruit trees. I mention it now; because if you, like us, are thinking about growing some tasty home grown fruit now is the time to plant them. You should find that the garden centres and nurseries have anticipated for your imminent arrival, and have stocked up with all sorts of fruit trees and bushes. By get them planted as soon as possible, you are giving the trees the whole winter to get settled in (most importantly getting some roots – their life support – established into the surrounding soil) before things warm up next spring.

So what about pollination?

that the fruit is lower down and easier to pick) My current favourite is the ‘family apple tree’ – this clever ‘man made’ tree, is actually three varieties of apple grafted into one tree. The three varieties all cross pollinate each other, and ‘all is well in the garden’. We planted one of these family trees for one of our favourite clients last year – and this year they had an enormous branch bending crop of all three varieties – they looked and tasted terrific …well I felt obliged to check them for quality….all part of my service!

I’ll spare you the biology lecture, but, basically most fruit trees will produce more fruit if they are pollinated by another variety: for example a Fiesta Apple will pollinate a Cox’s apple, but a Pear needs to be pollinated by another variety of pear…ok that’s the bad news, now for the good news. Several plums and cherries are self fertile, so if you are limited on space you may get away with one tree. You can get some dwarf growing trees – so it is easier to fit two or more trees into a limited space (it also means

Health Watch Food Facts 42

By Lorraine Mace

W

e are bombarded daily with information about how to maintain a healthy diet, but how many of the so-called facts we take as gospel are really true? Frozen or tinned fruit and vegetables are not as nutritious as fresh This all depends on how the fresh produce has been kept. If it has languished in the fridge for a week then it may not even have as much nutritional value as tinned or frozen. Generally speaking, though, frozen or tinned produce has as many vitamins as fresh.

Vegetarians don’t eat enough protein because they avoid meat Vegetarians usually eat a wide variety of protein-rich foods, such as legumes, dried peas, beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds and soy products. All fibre prevents heart disease Studies have shown that it’s only soluble fibre, found in products such as oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, lentils, apples, strawberries and citrus fruit that appears to lower cholesterol. Insoluble fibre, found in wheat bran, whole grain products, fruit and vegetables, hasn’t been directly linked to boosting heart health, but it is believed to help prevent certain cancers, such as colon cancer, so has other health benefits. All vegetable oils are good for the heart This is a sweeping statement and one often quoted, but not all vegetable oils are good for you. Coconut, palm and palm kernel oils (often found in packaged goods, such as biscuits and cakes) contain saturated fats, which can be detrimental to maintaining a healthy heart. The same is true of vegetable oils which have been hydrogenated (or partially hydrogenated). It’s essential

to read the nutrition panels on labels. The words ‘partially hydrogenated’ indicate the inclusion of trans-fatty acids, which aren’t good for your heart. On the other hand, extra-virgin olive oil, canola, safflower, sunflower and corn oils contain polyunsaturated fats, which are believed to help lower cholesterol. The same goes for peanut oil, but that should only be used if you are certain there is no one in the family with a peanut allergy. A low-fat diet guarantees weight loss Low-fat does not necessarily mean lowcalorie. If we’re talking about a low-fat diet with a high intake of fruit, vegetables and fibre-rich foods, then yes, the title might well be true because they not only are lowcalorie but are also filling. But what about the huge array of low-fat products calling to us from the supermarket shelves? We need to read the labels instead of assuming that they’ll be good for weight loss. Many of these products have a high sugar content. Another thing to look for is the fibre content. If this is low then you may feel hungry soon after eating because it isn’t filling enough. After all, pure sugar is fat free but nobody is going to believe that will fill you up and help you lose weight. As with most things in life, exercising commonsense is the best guide to healthy living.

The month of November

November feasts

It’s a gloomy month, November. Halfway between summer and winter, dark mornings, dark evenings, rain, sleet, fog, mud, autumn chills... in short: yuk. It’s not all bad, mind. A really still and clear November day, with autumn leaves in full polychromatic splendour, can beat all especially as dusk begins to gather. I remember just such an evening a few years ago in the formal gardens at Fountains Abbey, where a giant copper beech in its best crimson stood on the edge of the ornamental lake. Its image was so perfect, so vivid, so minutely detailed in the crystal surface of the water that one could hardly tell reflection from reality. It was a moment of pure transcendence. Odd moments of enchantment aside, November can be pretty murky; which is perhaps why so many religions have festivals of light around then. As not all cultures use a 12-month calendar, dates are often flexible, but November generally starts with Diwali, the five-day Hindu festival of light. The word “diwali” literally means “row of lamps”, and the festival signifies the triumph of good over evil as instanced by the homecoming of Lord Rama after his victory over Ravana, the demon king. Meanwhile on November 1st it’s Celtic New Year and is the occasion of the winter slaughter, when surplus livestock are butchered and salted down. On an equally cheery note, England’s own festival of light on November 5th marks nothing more edifying than the hanging, drawing, and quartering of a bunch of hapless conspirators – you probably know who I mean. To redress this rather grisly balance, late November/early December is the start of Hannukah, the Jewish festival of light, when the nine-branched menorah candelabras are lit. November is also the occasion for a number of feasts of the dead. The Christian month opens with All Saints, when prayers are offered for the intercession of those who have died and gone to Heaven, and is followed on November 2nd by All Souls, when prayers are offered on behalf of those who have died and not gone to Heaven.

Samhain is also a feast of the dead and is claimed as the origin of many Hallowe’en customs such as carving turnip masks. (Because, of course, they didn’t have pumpkins in those days. But then they didn’t have turnips either until the 18th century, so maybe that bit was made up). Finally, on November 16th this year (but it can be in October or December) Muslims have eid-ul-adha, Great Eid, which isn’t actually a feast of the dead but commemorates the example of Ibrahim, who was ready to sacrifice his son Ismael at Allah’s behest. When Allah saw how faithful Ibrahim was he relented and commanded him to sacrifice a goat instead, so the slaughtering animals motif recurs here too. Still relevant today is the Norse feast of Ullr on November 27th. Ullr was the Norse god of hunting, who travelled around on skis – crosscountry rather than downhill; but if you’re off skiing this winter you might as well offer a prayer to Ullr asking him to keep you out of the orthopaedic ward. So that’s November. Plenty of excuses to banish the blues with a special dinner whether you’re Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Pagan or none of the above. And it all ends on November 28th (this year) with the first day of Advent, the official start of the countdown to Christmas. Mind you, the tinsel will have been up in Tesco long before then, so a premature merry jingle bells to you all.

Deadline for our December issue is Weds 24th November

Lest we forget!

Perhaps one of the most famous phrases linked to Remembrance Day, Rudyard Kipling wrote these words in an 1897 poem, but little did he know the effect that they would have years later. Rudyard would later go on to learn the true extent of grief and sorrow of losing a loved one in a war, his only son, John Kipling, died in the Battle of Loos 1915 and he always felt a great sense of guilt in his son’s death. That is why we must remember all those brave soldiers, ordinary people who gave their lives throughout history to keep Britain a free, independent country. Those gallant men who fought for our rights and sacrificed themselves so that we can live the lives that we lead today. This is the purpose of Remembrance Day. November 11th 1918. A day when the First World War was ended with an armistice signed in Compiègne Forest, yet a date that has gone on to become one of the most important events in the calendar. Originally a day to commemorate the sacrifices of the First World War, today it is used as a day to remember all the people who have given their lives for their country in every war.

It is highly important that everyone remembers these men and women, including those who are currently fighting in Afghanistan and those who have sadly lost their lives in the current war. Furthermore, we must commemorate the deaths of all the allied soldiers that have given their lives and served to keep our country the safe place that it is today. So on November 11th, please buy a poppy to show your support, walk to the nearest cenotaph if you can but mostly importantly, at 11 o’clock, spare a moment for all those brave people who risked and gave their lives to make Britain the great nation that it is today. Lest we forget. Geraint Thomas

Recipe of the month These delicious homemade meatballs are flavoured with olives and basil then cooked in a rich and lightly spiced tomato sauce. Serve with spaghetti for a classic Italian supper or for a change pile on top of boiled rice or steamed couscous. Serves 4 Ready in 50 mins

Meatball Pasta 400g (14oz) minced beef or lamb 1 tbsp pitted black olives, chopped 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil 1 red onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 tbsp olive oil 500g carton passatta (sieved tomatoes) 1-2 tsp harissa paste (see tip) 1 tsp sugar 400g (14oz) spaghetti Fresh basil leaves, to garnish

1. Place the minced beef or lamb, olives, basil and half the chopped onion and crushed garlic in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process until the mixture is almost smooth. Shape into about 28 small meatballs and chill for 30 minutes. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the meatballs for 3-4 mins until browned all over, stirring frequently. Remove the meatballs with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 3. Add the rest of the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 5 mins. Pour in the passatta and add the harissa paste and sugar. Bring to the boil. Add the meatballs and 150ml (1/4pt) water and simmer for 30 mins. 4. Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of salted water for 12-14 mins or according to the packet instructions. Drain well and divide between four serving plates. Season the meatball sauce to taste then spoon over the spaghetti. Serve garnished with basil leaves. Harissa paste is a fiery blend of chillies and spices often used in North African cookery. You’ll find it near the herbs and spices section in most supermarkets but if unavailable add a pinch of crushed dried chillies instead.

Thought for the Month

Actually...we are rich! I was so encouraged; it was like music to my ears. Beloved and I had been for yet another walk around Caerphilly and were rather bravely (I thought) walking through the local park to head back home. There were some youngsters kicking a ball around and letting of some steam. I am not proud to admit that I had prepared myself to hear some unsavoury language or comments as we passed…But what I heard made me smile, it was something like this “Come on – let’s go and see the sunset” It seems to me that we have forgotten to teach our young people that you do not need money to enjoy yourself. As soon as the latest computer game / sports top / mobile phone has been used a couple of times – it is out of date; and so resumes the searching and longing ….and pleading for the even newer version. The moment of joy when they get their latest gizmo, is short lived …and in 20 years time will be long forgotten. Whereas I have a suspicion that the sunset lads will still be enjoying those sunsets for decades to come.

We can afford to eat, we have a solid home ….most of us can afford a holiday of sorts. Maybe the problem is that the more we have the less we appreciate it, and the less we are ‘blessed’ by it? I believe that the GOD I am getting know, loves to bless us with lots of things – including money – but what a heartbreaker it must be for him to see us undervalue those blessings….like a little child who doesn’t appreciate their Daddy’s present. All those gifts and blessings (Sunsets and iphones) are opportunities for us to recognise and draw close to our heavenly Daddy – who really just wants us to enjoy his presence as well as his presents. Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net

We have been told that we are short of money quite a lot recently; in reality compared to most of the world we are financially rich.

The Legal Eagle

Nuptial Agreements Nuptial agreements are never romantic but are quite often entered into pre or post marriage, particularly where one or both parties wish to protect their financially position against the possibility of the relationship breaking down. It comes as a surprise to many people that they do not have the certainty or binding effect that one would assume. A Judge dealing with finances upon divorce is not bound by a nuptial agreement. It is one of the factors to be considered under relevant law. In fact nuptial agreements are not specifically referred to in the relevant act of Parliament but can be considered under the heading of “any other factors”. The nuptial agreement is treated as evidence of the parties’ intention at the time the agreement was reached. However on the 20th October 2010 the Supreme Court handed down a landmark judgement in a long awaited appeal. Due to current legislation it would not be possible for the Supreme Court to rule that nuptial agreements are binding but this new judgement certainly moves significantly in that direction. The majority verdict (interestingly the one member that voted against was Baroness Hale the only member

with direct knowledge of family law) which will now be a point of law is that “the court should give effect to a nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party with full appreciation of its implication unless in the circumstances prevailing it would not be fair to hold the parties to their agreement”. This appears to suggest a nuptial agreement should be binding unless it can be argued it was not freely entered into or it would somehow be unjust to adhere to it. It appears that there is still room for argument of non disclosure of information between the parties when the agreement was entered into or unequal bargaining power or a party being pressurised into entering the agreement. However it does seem to be the case that the court’s decision means that it is now more advisable to consider a nuptial agreement to protect your position. Leanne Evans - Evans & Greaves

Motoring | Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage Meet the Sportage – a Kia that costs £20,777. We can hear that sucking of air through teeth from here – and we agree: Yes, that does sound a bit rich. But before you dismiss it out of hand, you need to know the manufacturer has form here. Take Kia’s recently launched Sortento SUV as an example. The BMW X5-sized model is selling out in the top-of-the-range K3 specification – and that costs nearly £30,000. Suddenly the Sportage doesn’t look so over-priced… It helps that the new Sportage is a stunner though – it’s the first model completely penned by former Audi designer Peter Schreyer, and it shows. What a job he’s done! From every angle the Sportage looks great – the front is purposeful with LED daytime running lights catching your eye, the side profile slopes with sashes and cuts in the right places and those alloy wheels, with black inserts, really are gorgeous. The First Edition Sportage is available in just the

one flavour: 2.0-litre CRDi with 4WD. That diesel unit is good for 134bhp and produces 320Nm of torque. It’s pretty clean too, emitting 156g/km and returning 47mpg on the combined cycle. On the road our test car did feel a little wheezy as the revs rose, but the low down grunt was impressive. It hits 60mph in 10.9 seconds with the manual gearbox and will go on to 112mph. That six-speed box is pretty decent compared to rivals – the Peugeot 3008’s shift is like stirring a bowl of soup in comparison – with the Kia set-up precise and pleasantly notchy. Steering is well weighted, but can feel a little devoid of feedback at motorway speeds. We’re not so keen on the pedals though – they’re angled high and have a tendency to make your shin muscles ache. Inside the quality of materials has come on leaps and bounds from Kias of old. The seats – although a little short on thigh support – are comfortable on long distance journeys, the controls for the stereo and dual zone climate control are easy to operate and the dash layout is fresh and clean.

Deadline for our December issue is Weds 24th November

61 The First Edition comes with aux-in for your iPod, a USB slot for other MP3 players and there’s built-in Bluetooth for handsfree calling with voice command system.

diesel and 1.6-litre petrol – both of which will be sub-140g/km cars and will cost under £17,000. Kia predicts the 1.7-litre diesel will be the best seller.

There’s even a reversing camera with screen built in to the rear-view mirror that works wonderfully.

Despite the price and our minor gripes, we really do like the Sportage – it’ll sell on its looks alone and when the cheaper models arrive, buyers will snap them up.

On the road, it feels like a big car – the driving position is pretty lofty, but despite this there’s surprisingly little room inside. The driving position is cosy and that sloping roof makes it feel like there’s little headroom. It’s also a little on the loud side – road roar from those big 18-inch alloys is quite high and we’re surprised it rides as hard as it does. You expect a 4x4 compact SUV like this to soak up the bumps more, but it’s actually quite jarring.

Kia is determined to move the brand further away from its budget roots and closer towards the ‘reasonably-priced premium’ market. And with cars like this new Sportage, few would bet against it. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine, www.CarDealerMag.co.uk

Still the plus side is handling in the bends – the Sportage doesn’t roll like rivals when pushed. Kia dealers will only have 800 of these First Edition models to sell until sometime in November when the range expands. Incoming then will be a 1.7-litre
