My Local View / www.mylocalview.co.uk
A Magical way to earn a living David Poppy, a Caerphilly based Magician and regular My Local View advertiser recounts his journey into Magic and a special event booking How did you get started?
I became interested in magic and puppets at the age of seven, when I saw a glove puppet production of “Pilgrims Progress”. Three years on I had progressed to some original thinking and produced, ”The Three Bears”, which I performed at school. My teacher was so impressed she arranged for me to visit another school for a Christmas party, and I was paid! The die was cast. In 1955 I formed the “Bijou Magical Theatre” since then many tours have been made both in England and on the Continent, plus thousands of children’s shows, adult birthday parties, in clubs, theatres and schools. Then in 1959 I married but as an entertainer it was difficult to get a mortgage, thus the need for a ‘proper job’, I became a child care officer and the next 30 years were spent as a social, and then senior social worker, working mainly with children, only the magic kept me sane. Finally! Having cleared the mortgage and once my children were well settled, I was able to return to my first love, entertaining children and adults.
When did you turn professional full time?
I have been full time, since 1993 I have specialised in close up magic at weddings, corporate functions and adult birthday parties. Today is likely to be a very long day as weddings have a programme, but usually do not run to time, and the time of the meal may be stretched much to the chagrin of the chef who has laboured for hours to produce a masterpiece, The photographer will need to take ages to produce those very important photos, and usually delays the meal, by which time the guests are usually very hungry, it is my job to fill this time.
A Spring Wedding - notes from David’s Diary Today the wedding is at 1.00pm. I am booked for 2.30pm. for about one hour. The mileage is 55 miles each-way, so, as I like to arrive early and to allow for traffic holdups I will need to leave about 12.00pm. My magic day starts with a run through of everything I may need, check clothing , props etc - using them all to make sure that everything is in order. Arriving at the hotel, there is a large car park and I can park close to the long flight of steps. Find the senior manager for the day and sort out arrangements and where I am to work, as it is a fine day it will be outdoors. As expected the guests did not start to arrive until 3.30pm. I start to circulate, introducing lone guests to others and doing two or three magic effects with each group, it is nearly 5.00pm . The bridal couple arrive, and then the best man pays me. As I drive home I muse on my day, I know that I have made a lot of people happy and hope that when they feel up against things they will remember my magic and know that impossible things can really happen.
Close Up Magic for adult functions

Gadget Review: In the Garden You can be assured that March won’t be the end of winter in the UK, but nevertheless that odd sunny day will make you believe that a ‘barbecue summer’ is on its way. Time then to get the garden in order. Long gone are the backbreaking, do-it-all-by-hand days, say hello to some effort saving garden gadgets. Robomow RM200 Automatic Lawnmower www.mowermagic.co.uk £799 Okay so this is somewhat more expensive that actually getting someone in to do the lawn for you, but that’s not the point is it? Take the rechargeable RM200 to your lawn, press the start button and your grass will be neatly cropped while you watch. (Note that although this gadget is supposed to free time for other activities, you know you’ll just stand there watch it for the first few times.) It senses objects, trees and children although it might be an idea to keep your toes out of the way. Just to top off the pleasure for every geek out there, you can even get a remote control to guide your mover from the shed to the lawn. Sheen X300 Flame Gun www.mowdirect.co.uk £148.99 Let the weeds know what you think of them by toasting them with a 2000°f blast from this flame gun. When directed at the base of weeds it stops the plants’ sap rising. A second going over a few days later Deadline for our April issue is Weds 24th March at 10am
incinerates all top growth and weed seeds, leaving a potash rich residue. Powered by paraffin, but obviously not adding chemicals to the ground so loosely labelled ‘organic’. So, green and effective if you are looking for justification to buy one. (But we all know you want one just because it’s a flame thrower for goodness sake.) Bosch Ciso Secateur Widely available Around £50 These rechargeable battery operated secateurs are a real boon in the spring when you realise that your garden is looking more jungle than Kew. Although these would be of particular use for those who find they don’t have the power in their hands for manual pruning, anyone with a big gardening job would find them invaluable. Then of course there’s the novelty factor meaning that even the most reluctant gardener will show an interest in helping out. Kärcher 300 T-Racer Patio Cleaner Widely available Around £56 While general pressure washers have been around for years and are great for cleaning cars and paintwork, there have always been a couple of drawbacks when using them to clean patios. Firstly blasting away the dirt from the ground means it neatly transfers itself to your windows, fences, and anything else nearby. Secondly, it can dislodge loose grouting between patio slabs leaving you with a clean patio nicely primed for weeds to take hold. This patio cleaner overcomes both those problems. It also hovers in use making the whole job just a bit easier.

Chrome Imposition by Seb Hunter
People often attempt to impress you by saying: ‘Oh yes, I’ve got that too, but on the original vinyl. You can’t beat the original vinyl, etc.’ And while you’re busy repositioning yourself as the johnny-come-lately neophyte you’ve just revealed yourself to be, they continue by insisting that they still only ever listen to that particular piece of music on vinyl, since vinyl (thus—discreet cough— themselves too) is an audiophile of impeccable authenticity. Unlike you, with your vapid, digital CDs and downloads which, by the way, sadly define you. Having a large collection of vinyl, no matter what’s within the actual grooves, makes you a credible music lover. If you don’t, you’re at best an idiot, at worst actually a music hater. But what about tapes? When I grew up, it wasn’t all gatefolds and picture discs; sure you had records, but you also had cassettes. One’s cassette collection never followed the same obsessional logic that came with records and later CDs – I don’t ever remember specifically meaning to go out and buy something on tape; I just kind of ended up with them. Thus my ‘collection’ of tapes is completely lacking in any narrative flow. Can these scratched plastic boxes possess that same nostalgic, self-righteous tug on the sepia-strings as vinyl? No. They’re small and dirty and rather horrible. Had it not been for Sony’s Walkman, the very notion of the audio cassette would be consigned to the same socio-historic scrapheap as the 8-track. Instead, we’ve all got some tapes. I’ll bet almost everybody reading this has some old suitcase, holdall or dirty old plastic bag full of their old cassettes, probably hidden away in the attic. Mine are in my basement - every few years I delightedly ‘stumble across’ these unidentifiably sticky receptacles, and spend a good hour rediscovering their awful contents sitting alongside an old cassette player. The first thing that always strikes me is that not one single tape is rewound back to the beginning; the vast majority are, maddeningly, exactly two-thirds of the way through Side A. So that in order to listen to any of the glorious music encased within these shaky (often, literally, Shaky) containers, you must first sit and listen to lots of whirring. Whirring and waiting – in our instant-access-toeverything culture, all this pointless sitting around just won’t do. Also involved is guesswork: is this the Deadline for our April issue is Weds 24th March at 10am
beginning of the song I like? No, gone too far, back a bit; too far; oh no hang on, this machine can play tapes backwards too, so rewind actually means forward wind, on this side at least. People complain about the lower-spec artwork reproduction of the CD booklet, but I think these people forget how fundamentally unappealing cassette inserts were. By the mid-to-late 80s, when tapes were at their culturally most significant (‘Chrome’, ‘Position II’, ‘Hi-Level Bias’, ‘MRX3 Oxide’, that Maxell advert - gah! - what memories!), the cassette boxes used to creak, crack and bulge with all the glossy concertina wads of paper containing the compressed artwork, lyrics, band photos and so on. The music still sounded OK; at least when the tape didn’t get chewed-up (that heartbreaking, masticated gurgle). There are many albums that I can still only think of in their cassette formats. And maybe it was just me, but even after paying for it, possessing an album on tape never felt like you owned it 100%, like having the vinyl or CD did. It kind of felt like you owned maybe 66% of it. Any potential deeper mystique would always be denied you; partly because you couldn’t read the tiny lyrics; but also because you couldn’t play it backwards to unlock the backward-masked Satanic messages. Actually your tape would often play itself backwards, but not on purpose; it was more to do with arbitrary mechanical failure. Wasn’t it great though, that a humble pencil fit exactly into the little holes, and that its hexagonal shape delivered just the right amount of torque required to manually spool the thing back together again after your precious £5.99 investment had just been chewed up by your expensive, twin-decked Pioneer system? Ah, tapes. I hear my basement calling once more. Rattling. Gurgling. Snapping.

Perfectly Plucked Eyebrows are a natural frame for makeup and should be plucked immediately after a bath or shower, as the pores will be open, making hair removal less painful. If you are in a hurry, soak a cotton wool ball in warm water and hold it against each brow for a minute or two before plucking. Do not moisturise, as this makes it difficult for the tweezers to grip the hairs. Use a magnifying mirror in good light. First brush upwards with an eyebrow brush and snip any stray hairs above the thickest part of the brow. Next brush downwards and trim hairs below the thickest part of the brow. Finish by brushing upwards. Three-quarters of your eyebrow should slant upwards and the remaining quarter slant downwards. Take a slim pencil and hold it next to your nostril in a vertical line to find where your brow should begin. Keeping the pencil against your nose, move the other end to the outer corner of your eye
Deadline for our April issue is Weds 24th March at 10am
to find where your brow should end. To find where the highest point of your brow should be, move the free end until it crosses your iris. Never remove hairs from the top of your brows as this distorts the natural curve. Hold skin taut and pluck one hair at a time, pulling gently at a 45 degree angle in the direction of hair growth. Stop frequently to make sure your brows are even. Any redness can be reduced with aloe vera gel or ice.

Working from home The curse of the washing by Ted Bruning
I suppose the obvious thing to do is buy a tumble-dryer. But there’s no room for one in the kitchen, and since the utility room became my wife’s stained-glass workshop there’s no room for one in there either. And anyway, just as the occasional blizzard in Britain doesn’t justify investment in heavyduty Scandinavian-style snow ploughs, so the frequency of occasions when we can’t hang the washing out doesn’t justify our laying out good money on yet more electrical equipment. But lord, lord, how much washing two teenagers generate! And it’s not the girl, either: it’s the boy. When I were a lad, 30 years ago and more, a pair of men’s jeans could go a month between washes. In fact bikers used to pride themselves on having freestanding jeans – you know, the kind that were so infused with motor oil, sweat, beer, and less easy-to-define substances that when you took them off at night (if you took them off at night) they’d amble off into the corner of the bedroom and stand there patiently by themselves until you needed them again. Punks seemed to buy their clothes off tramps. And as for the frequency with which hippies changed their undercrackers – well, best not to go there... But my 17-year-old seems to change his clothes every five minutes, and when he’s not changing his clothes he’s monopolising the shower. Not that I’ve got anything against hygiene, but you can take it too far. Anyway, as I’m the one who “works from home” (hah!), I get to put the wash in. And it’s become a daily chore. I do more washing than I used to do when they were babies. Mind you, that’s because the most important items in their wardrobes then were disposable. Now there’s an idea! Why has no-one come up with disposable clothes for teenagers? There’s a fortune to be made there. On second thoughts, though, Primark and Matalan do pretty much that already. Deadline for our April issue is Weds 24th March at 10am
It’s not the washing I mind. It’s trying to get the wash dry on wet days, whether there’s a fullscale no-holds-barred polar blizzard going on, or whether it’s one of those drizzly days, less dramatic but equally hostile to drying, when the sky hasn’t so much opened as just not closed properly. We used to have the perfect indoor clothes dryer, the gift of an aunt and of 1960s vintage. It was a collapsible wooden rack with a fitted cover and a small electric heater underneath. Damp laundry got really toasty in there, and it did a reasonable job of warming up the conservatory too. But when the little heater died of old age the best replacement we could find was an electric clothes airing rack without even a fitted cover. My wife made one out of old sheets, but even with its cover on it doesn’t get warm enough to prove dough, let alone dry a wash. So it’s radiators. After every bad-weather wash, our radiators are so festooned with clothes that they look like the bunting at a church fete. They do the job, but if you leave the clothes on too long they go completely solid, like the biker’s jeans I was telling you about. I have to remember not to hang chewable items like knickers and socks where the dog can get them – she thinks they’re food – and then there’s the question of delicacy. When friends pop round for a cuppa, do you really want to treat them to an eyeful of your smalls?

olfers throughout the British Isles are being given a unique opportunity to play for their countries and at the same time help grow the game at junior level. The Four Nations Golf Challenge, potentially the most exciting pairs competition for amateur club golfers ever devised, offers the mouth-watering prize of a “Ryder Cup” style finale on one of Europe’s most challenging courses. Open to men and ladies, The Four Nations Golf Challenge will culminate in a Grand Final to be contested by four teams of 12 players representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales at The Oxfordshire Golf Club in the Chiltern Hills from 17-20 October 2010. To earn their chance to represent the Champion Golf Nation of the Year, a pair will need to win a maximum of four four-ball, better-ball matches, starting in May, in regional brackets consisting of 16 pairs each. If necessary, depending on the number of entries, a one-day final qualifying event will be held in September to decide which six pairs will represent their country in the Grand Final. Roger Brady, Director of organisers Concierge Golf, said: “Even though several national knock-out competitions for amateur golfers take place each year, there are none, as far as we are aware, that offer the chance of an ‘international team’ appearance to club golfers of all standards.” The cost of entry is £20 per person (£40 per
pair), with entries contributing to the Golf Foundation, the charity which nurtures the game at junior level throughout the British Isles. Golf Foundation Chief Executive, Mike Round, said: “The Four Nations Golf Challenge is not only an attractive and stimulating amateur golf tournament, but is helping to generate revenue for the Golf Foundation. By supporting this unique event, all clubs and members will help to raise much needed funds for ‘grass roots’ golf.” Roger Brady added: “We are delighted to have the Golf Foundation as an associate partner and to support the work they do pr o moti ng the s por ti ng and soci al development of children and young people through golf.” The Oxfordshire, a spectacular rolling layout designed by Rees Jones and owned by the Leaderboard Group which also includes Chart Hills, Dale Hill and Sandford Springs, is about to open its own four-star hotel where every participant will stay free of charge throughout the Grand Final. Having hosted many pr ofessional tournaments, including the Benson & Hedges International Open on the European Tour from 1996-99, The Oxfordshire will provide a proven setting for club golfers to experience the passion and thrill of playing for their countries for the first time. As Roger Brady says: “Just think: it could be you on the last day, all square in the deciding match, your team-mates behind the final green willing you on to hole the putt that gives your country victory! Where else could you feel that ‘Ryder Cup moment’?” Entries are open to every golfer with a club handicap and will close on 30 April, 2010. For tournament registration or any other queries, please click on to: www.fournationsgolfchallenge.co.uk or call Roger Brady on 01858 462706.

Sore knees, aching calves, bad backs and strained sinews These were just some of the afflictions suffered by your MP and a doughty band of individuals who walked from Bargoed bus station to the Fwrrwm Ishta in Machen to raise funds for Haiti. On Sunday 21 February, a group of about 14 of us set out on our sponsored walk, on a morning which began with snow but quickly became cold yet dry. We were led by Mr Geraint Evans, the conductor of the Aber Valley Male Voice Choir. Geraint is also an experienced walker who both set the pace and took us on some interesting, if not wholly welcome detours. I am thinking of the last detour in particular. After some three and half hours of steady walking, we were half-way between Trethomas and Machen and looking forward to the end of our walk – the end wasn’t quite in sight, but it wasn’t far away.
The next big fundraising event I am involved with will be the concert in St Helen’s Church, Caerphilly. This is on 5 March and tickets are £6 However, Geraint decided to lead us in the and are available from my office direction of Waterloo and take us on a trek (Community Council Offices, Newport Road, across open countryside and along the Bedwas CF83 8YB, Tel: 029 Our choice of day Caerphilly, trips have doubled to 2088 Machen trail. By this time our bodies were 1061). Among the performers at the concert starting to feel the strain of a 12bring mile walk, you more variety throughout the year will be the Caerphilly’s Ladies Choir, the Aber and the last thing most of us wanted was Valley Male Voice Choir and the group of to be clambering over stiles, getting stuck young singers called Triawd. in mud and walking up and down disused railway embankments. But, I suppose, it made Hopefully, the concert will be a sell out. our arrival at the Fwrrwm Ishta all the more welcome.

To date, the sponsored walk has brought in over £2,000 and the money is still coming in as I write.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery |Let’s propagate! Now is the time the time to ‘make babies’ … in the plant world. After a long and cold winter, I love to rip open a pack of seeds and kick start the cycle of life in our garden …. I can almost feel the summer sun on my neck as I do it! If you are keen to grow some vegetables this summer you can start with easy to grow ‘early starters’ such as Radish and lettuce. One tip, for no extra charge, it is very easy to sow too many seeds at once and you end up wasting plants during the spring: your best bet is to make several ‘staggered’ sowings maybe every 2 or 3 weeks so that you get a succession of smaller crops rather that 1 big ‘glut’. Why not let your kids have a go, they love to see their plants growing so quickly … you never know you may be encouraging the Alan Titchmarsh of the future. Radish can be sown straight out in the garden in a little shallow groove in the soil, about 1 cm deep, and then sprinkle some nice fine soil over them and then allow the spring rain (which shall surely come! ) to do the rest; within a couple of weeks you should start to see the seedlings poking through.

Keep doing the same things
and you WILL get the same results? Are you a business looking for exponential growth? Get P.A.I.D.B.A.C.K!
Lettuce may be better started off in little trays – if you look at your local garden centre / nursery they will have little segmented trays which allow you to grow 1 plant per little cell of compost, grow these on until the lettuce have about 6 leaves and, equally importantly, a good root system, and then they will be ready to plant out into the soil. Other easy to grow veg that you can start to sow in March are: spring Onions, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Broad beans, Peas, some Carrots and Beetroot …so you could be busy over the next few weekends … but think of all the fun and satisfaction you will have ?!!

Foiling the ‘Flu By Lorraine Mace Very often, at the first sign of a sneeze or sniffle, we claim to be suffering from influenza. Rarely is this actually true. However, a genuine case of ‘flu can be extremely debilitating and every care should be taken to avoid going down with the virus – as well as doing the right things to protect our health, if we are unfortunate enough to succumb to it. So what are the symptoms of ‘flu and how do they differ from the common cold? Unfortunately, they have many symptoms in common, so it might be difficult to tell at first. A cold comes on fairly slowly and gives the sufferer a runny nose, sometimes accompanied by a cough and sore throat, but these symptoms are mild compared to those of the ‘flu. If you also have a high temperature, aching muscles, a headache and feel ill (not just in the head, but throughout your body) and these symptoms come on quite quickly, then it’s highly likely you have ‘flu. The best way of combating ‘flu is avoidance. The virus can be killed on surfaces and skin using alcohol-based wipes and gels. Frequent washing of your hands is also effective. Of course, it goes without saying that a healthy lifestyle and diet is one of the best defences. Incorporate foods into your daily regime, such as garlic (excellent at killing viruses), yoghurt (has a built-in anti-infection agent), green tea (said to have an antiviral effect on the ‘flu virus), blackcurrants (good source of vitamin C, which aids the immune system), cashew nuts (contain immuneboosters such as zinc, selenium and iron). Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids, particularly water to maintain hydration, which is essential for your immune system. Stopping smoking can help prevent you from being susceptible to the virus. Smoking can affect your body’s immune response mechanisms. Keep your home and workplace wellventilated to reduce the concentration of airborne viruses, such as ‘flu. When there is an outbreak of ‘flu in your area, try to avoid crowds as much as possible. Deadline for our April issue is Weds 24th March at 10am
The ‘flu virus spreads easily in crowded areas, such as supermarkets, schools and offices. It’s a good idea to try to maintain a distance between yourself and others during a ‘flu outbreak, so don’t hug or kiss anyone, not even those you would normally come into close contact with. Avoid touching your mouth, eyes or nose unless you have washed your hands. Germs find easy entry through those areas. You could have picked up the virus from a surface without even being aware of it. So, after travelling on any public transport, or riding in a lift, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before touching your face. The above advice should help to prevent infection; however, in the case of a severe outbreak, you might still become a sufferer. If, in spite of all your precautions, you do go down with ‘flu, follow your doctor’s advice to ensure a speedy recovery.

Recipe of the month Home-made muffins fresh from the oven are truly delicious and so easy to make. This basic recipe works with any flavouring - you can replace the raspberries with other fruit such as blueberries, diced apple or dried apricots or try adding chunks of milk, white or plain chocolate. They are best eaten on the day of making. Makes 12 Ready in 35 mins
Raspberry Muffins 250g (9oz) plain flour 1tbsp baking powder
1. Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Line a 12hole muffin tray with 12 paper muffin cases. 2. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl
75g (3oz) butter, chilled
and stir in the sugar. Coarsely grate the chilled
100g (4oz) golden
butter into the bowl and stir with a fork to coat in
caster sugar 1 large egg 175ml (6fl oz) milk 150g (5oz) fresh raspberries Extra sugar for sprinkling (optional)
the flour mixture. 3. Beat together the egg and milk then pour into the bowl. Mix lightly with a fork until just combined. Take care not to over beat the mixture - it should still be a little lumpy. Sprinkle lightly with a little extra sugar whilst still warm, if liked.

Financial Focus | ISA - Saving you tax! An ISA or Individual Savings Account isn’t an investment itself. It is a tax efficient “wrapper” in which you place other investments. Investments held within it will not be liable for capital gains tax and any interest gained will not be liable for income tax. If you are resident in the UK for tax purposes and are 16 or over you qualify for the cash portion of the ISA allowance, but you need to be 18 to qualify for a stocks and shares ISA. An individual can currently invest up to £7200 in any tax year and this can be done by way of a lump sum or regular contributions. There are two types of ISA. Firstly, there is a Cash ISA which operates just like a normal Bank, Building Society or Post Office savings account, but the interest paid on your deposit is paid gross rather than net of tax, giving you a higher return. Investors may save up to £3600 pounds in any tax year (a tax year runs from 6th April to 5th April the following year) into one of these accounts. Once you have saved £3600 pounds into a Cash ISA in a tax year you cannot add any more to it
even if you wish to top the account up following a withdrawal. Secondly, there is a Stocks and Shares ISA, which can be used to buy individual shares, collective investments or funds. Funds can be used to spread your risk, reducing your exposure to more volatile investments. An investor may save up to £7200 (£10,200 if you are over 50 years old) per year into a stock and shares ISA minus any contribution made to a cash ISA. With the current tax year ending on 5th April 2010, contact your Independent Financial Adviser now to take advantage of the valuable ISA allowance available. Paolo Roberts. Independent Financial Advisor paoloroberts@hhpg.net Paolo lives in Caerphilly and been advising clients in the area for many years.

Motoring Review McLaren MP4-12C By James Baggott
Meet the McLaren MP4-12C – the first model in a range of road cars from the manufacturer that plan to rewrite the supercar rulebook. With a host of clever new technology, taken straight from Lewis Hamilton’s World Championship winning F1 car, the breathtaking sportscar doesn’t just break the mould, it takes a sledge hammer to the production line. Designed from the ground-up with McLaren’s legendary attention to detail, the new supercar is packed with innovation. Powering the car will be a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 unit. Pumping out a mind-blowing 600bhp and 600Nm of torque, performance figures are likely to be record-breaking. There’s no official word just yet, but expect sub-four seconds for the dash to 60mph and a top speed in excess of 200mph. The dry sump unit has dual variable valve timing and a flat plane crankshaft that allows the engine to be mounted very low in the chassis, lowering the centre of gravity and improving handling. Driving the rear wheels, the engine revs to an ear-piercing 8,500-rpm and McLaren has worked hard to get the soundtrack symphony-right, using a special exhaust manifold and intake systems to give an engine note that’ll set the hairs on the back of your neck on end.
But where things really get clever is with ‘Pre Cog’ technology. This primes the gearbox for a change the second the driver applies pressure to the rocker, thus saving crucial time. The second bit of pressure actuates the shift, which takes just milliseconds to complete. Think of it as priming the shutter on a digital camera and you get the idea. Usability has obviously been high on the agenda, with McLaren saying ride quality will be on a par with executive saloon cars. But that’s not to say it won’t be sporty too.
McLaren’s philosophy from the outset was to build a supercar that wouldn’t just be an also-ran, but the best. And with Ron Dennis at the helm, it’s unlikely it will be released with performance that won’t just beat the competition, but trounce it.
Looks wise, the new car has been designed so every part, every scoop and every slant has a purpose. McLaren are keen to stress the 12C is not a modernday reproduction of the F1, but does build on its ‘functionally-driven engineering and design’.
Although at the time of writing we didn’t know the price, the MP4-12C will be launched to compete in what McLaren believes to be the ‘core’ sportscar market – the £125,000 to £175,000 segment. Key rivals will include the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini LP560-4.
Bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, inspired by the McLaren logo, dominate the front end, the windscreen is deep and low for excellent driver visibility, and the twin rear exhausts are striking. But the real talking point are the doors – just like the F1 the 12C features dihedral doors, that open forwards and upwards on a single hinge. The MP4-12C is groundbreaking in every sense of the word, and is set to change the face of the supercar glitterati.
That 3.8-litre V8 unit is mated to a seven-speed Seamless Shift dual clutch gearbox – or SSG. Again, taking technology honed on the marque’s F1 cars, shifts are made by steering wheel-mounted ‘rocker’ levers. Like the F1 cars, shifts can be made by pulling or pushing the rocker. Thought for the Month / Forgiveness..who benefits?
One of the unhappiest people you can meet is someone who has been hurt, and cannot forgive. Unforgiveness and bitterness can be a poison to the life of any person; I should know, I’ve been there, done that and got the Tshirt. Thanks! So, I was listening to a chap from Rwanda speaking the other day. He was relating some amazing stories of forgiveness that have been going on, largely unpublicised, over the years since the horrific and well publicised genocide of the mid 1990’s. One of the most amazing stories was that of a mother whose son had been murdered. She ended up giving a home to the lad who had murdered her son, and chose to treat him as if he were her son. What sort of person is she then? Words such as happy despite everything, free, loving and strong come to mind. One of my favourite sayings is ‘it’s not your circumstance that matters – just your stance’;and whereas I like to say it, she likes to live it. So who benefits from forgiveness? In the example of the amazing mum lots of people benefit.
1. Most importantly – she benefits. Rather than growing old with this totally understandable anger and bitterness eating away at her; she lets it go; her decision; she frees herself … we don’t just forgive for the benefit of the person who has wronged us, it helps us too. 2. It can help the person who has hurt us. We don’t pretend that they are innocent. They need to understand the consequence of their actions; they may still need to face justice if they have broken the law. By choosing to forgive and let go, we can move on and the door is open for them to change and move on too. 3. The community benefits. The Rwanda horrors occurred because of deeply held bitterness, and the whole country suffered as a result. But now the whole country is benefiting from a new way of thinking and forgiving, and is moving on to a better future. I think they call that a win win situation…. The Legal Eagle / Marriage v Cohabitation Although it is much more common for couples to live together these days the law still treats them very differently from married couples. This is particularly the case in relation to ownership of property and entitlement to share in specific benefits. Married couples, upon divorce have their financial claims determined by an act of Parliament which sets out what the Court has to take into account when considering the division of matrimonial assets. (We have dealt with this previously in some detail within this publication). Unmarried couples however upon breakdown of the relationship are governed by Property Law. This largely depends on the Parties intentions at the time the property was purchased. If there is a dispute then another act of Parliament makes provision to allow an owner to apply to the court to either enable or prevent a sale of the property. The Court can also make a declaration confirming the extent of a person’s interest in the property. The basic law is that where there is joint ownership of the property there will be a presumption of equal share. However it is possible to rebut that presumption taking into account all of the circumstances in the case and award one party a greater share. The Court must take into consideration all relevant factors including:
Deadline for our April issue is Weds 24th March at 10am
a) the intentions of the parties when the property was purchased b) the purpose for which the property was purchased c) whether there are any children occupying the property. In the event there are children occupying the property it is possible to make an application under the Children Act of 1989 to postpone any sale of property on the basis that the children need to occupy the property as their home. It is important to note however that even if such an application is successful on eventual sale each party will still only be entitled to the same share they owned at the time of separation. Unlike married couples cohabitees have no rights to apply for maintenance payments for themselves or any right to apply for a share of their partner’s pension regardless of the length of the relationship. The only possible common factor that exists whether married
or simply living together is that each case will be determined upon their own facts. Leanne Evans - Evans & Greaves

QUICK DRYING - YOU CAN WALK ON YOUR CARPETS STRAIGHT AFTER WE FINISH CLEANING THEM WE MOVE YOUR FURNITURE - WE CLEAN UNDER THEM THEN PUT THEM BACK IN PLACE, IT’S INCLUDED CERTIFIED STAFF - CLEAN TOGETHER IN PAIRS, SO THE CLEANING PROCESS IS FAST AND EFFICIENT
Our machines cost over £30,000 and are over 20 times more powerful than the small electric, low grade portable machines used by other carpet cleaners. Our machines commonly clean cinemas & bars, so when you call us to clean your home you will experience a far superior & much faster cleaning process, basically the same service as our big commercial clients How does it Work? Our machines are fixed into the vehicles, they run on fuel & have their own water tank, similar to a fire engine, we simply run 2 pipes into your home, the 1st pipe is similar to a jet-wash which sprays our 100% safe detergent solutions into the carpet, the second pipe disperses steam at 240 degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to kill germs, bacteria & all carpet bugs which then gets extracted into our on board waste tank. This process is the best; most thorough clean you can have for your home
