Magic Metabolism By Lorraine Mace

We frequently hear how our metabolism affects us, from making us sluggish and lethargic if it’s too slow, to encouraging weight loss and a feeling of well-being when it’s working properly, but it is often spoken of in the same breath as exercise, which puts many people off trying to improve their metabolic rate. However, you’ll be pleased to know that there are other ways to boost your metabolism; that it isn’t only about fitness regimes. But the chances are, that once you have kick-started your metabolism, your increased energy levels will cry out for some exercise. Fibre High fibre carbohydrates, being harder to digest than simple carbohydrates, can boost metabolic rates. Also, foods that are high in fibre are usually lower in calories and can also act as non-harmful appetite suppressants. High fibre foods include fruits, vegetables and wholemeal products. However, all things in moderation – don’t go overboard on fibre as it can lead to diarrhoea or other unpleasant side effects if taken to excess. Protein Protein is essential for the growth and repair of the body’s cells, but most of us eat too little compared to our intake of fats and carbohydrates. Research suggests that 25% of the calories in protein are burned during digestion, which means your metabolism could be boosted by making protein a larger part of your diet. However, the same advice applies as with fibre – be sensible. Too much protein can place stress on vital organs, including kidneys. Spice up your life Spicy foods can temporarily boost your metabolic rate. Because your body’s temperature is increased, you burn more calories as your body attempts to regulate itself. Some spices, such as cayenne, are believed to increase the rate at which your body burns fat. As with fibre and

November2009.indd 8

protein, don’t overdo things, as too much spice can cause heartburn or even stomach ulcers. Vitamins Vitamins and minerals perform a number of essential functions. To maximise your metabolism, make sure you take in the recommended daily allowance (RDA) by eating vitamin rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, liver and nuts. This will help to keep your metabolic rate at its optimal level. Water Dehydration can lead to a reduction in your metabolic rate, so do make sure you drink plenty of water each day. Drink more if you are exercising, to replace the body’s water loss. Alcohol Alcohol has the opposite effect on the body to water, causing dehydration and reducing the metabolic rate. Alcohol in moderation is not likely to do much harm, but excessive consumption can cause vitamin deficiencies (and other non-metabolic problems). Caffeine Caffeine, like alcohol, is dehydrating and can lower metabolism. If you drink several cups of coffee each day, why not try substituting one of two of them with water? As you can see, it is possible to boost metabolic rates through food choices. If you follow some (or all) of the above tips, you should kick-start your metabolism, burn a few more calories and improve your overall health.

Layer by Layer Putting on perfect make up that lasts for hours is not difficult. The art is in layering your cosmetics. There is no absolute right or wrong way, but the following routine should ensure your make up looks good and stays that way for most of the day (or night).

Preparing the base

As with all works of art, good preparation is essential. Make sure your skin is clean, toned and moisturised. Cover any blemishes by dabbing with a concealer and then apply foundation using a clean make up sponge. Blend the foundation well, paying particular attention to the jaw, neck and hairline, and then ‘set’ it with powder – loose or compact. Choose a foundation as close to your skin tone as possible and use a translucent powder.

November2009.indd 18

Eyes next

First use an eyeliner, liquid or pencil, keeping the line as close to the lashes as possible. Then apply eye shadow – light colours highlight and darker shades add depth. If used, eyebrow pencil is next, followed by two or three coats of mascara to top and lower lashes.

Cheeks

Use just enough blusher or bronzer to put a little colour on your upper cheekbones, blending out towards the hairline.

Lips last

Using a lip base will ensure lipstick lasts longer. With a lip liner, outline your natural lip shape. Fill in with colour – either lipstick or gloss for a pouty look.

Touch ups

If you follow these steps you should only need to carry powder and lip products for touch ups.

BEAT BULLYING

Bullying is defined as the act of intentionally causing harm to others, through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of intimidation. Sadly, it’s far too common and isn’t restricted to children and young adults. The rise of bullying in the workplace is rapid and invasive, having costly repercussions for the production. Countless working days are lost because of bullying with victims having to take time off due to the heavy stress load. The old adage “sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me” isn’t really true, as anyone who has ever been a victim of bullying will confirm. Self esteem and confidence is shattered, sometimes taking years to rebuild, There are two awareness campaigns this month: Ban Bullying at Work Day is on 7th November and encourages everyone to take part in the minute of reflection to be held at 10 am on this day. The key objective is to raise awareness of the issue across the UK. Workplace bullying can often be mistaken for a particularly aggressive working style, but if it makes you feel humiliated and incompetent, then it is bullying. Visit www.banbullyingatwork.com for more information and help about this particular aspect of bullying. The other campaign is Anti-Bullying Week which covers the week of 16th – 20th November. This year’s theme is cyber-bullying, which is defined by the government as “when one person or a group of people aim to threaten, tease or embarrass someone else by using a mobile phone, the internet or other technologies”. However, although this is the theme of this year’s awareness week, all forms of harassment are treated equally.

November2009.indd 22

For advice and assistance in all forms of bullying, visit www.bullying.co.uk which has over 200 pages of highly detailed, practical and legally sound advice. The website is linked to by over 36,000 websites worldwide and is the first to appear in every search engine when you search for bullying or any of its associated problems. The website is also part of The British Library Digital Vault that will ensure their excellent advice is available for future generations regardless of what happens to the internet in the future. One of the core parts of bullying.co.uk’s Anti-bullying Week is their offer to schools to make free antibullying posters. Every child can create one and print it themselves, and each poster is sent to www.flickr. com/photos/bullyinguk which allows the poster to be shared across any of 80 social sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. These posters save schools huge amounts of money when set against the cost of ordering school supplies, as well as spreading the word that bullying is not to be tolerated.

Anyone worried about a situation at home, work, school or online should visit www.bullying.co.uk for help, where as a victim, a friend or parent of a victim, you can find up to date help and advice on every aspect of this deplorable activity

.

Get involved in these awareness campaigns to spread the message that all bullying is unacceptable and help beat bullying once and for all.

My Local View / November 2009

It’s funny how two simple letters can stir so much emotion in so many people. That sweeping blue and white RS emblem can be traced back through a bloodline that plots a graph of hot-hatch evolution.

MOTORING REVIEW: Focus RS

It’s a name that has graced the rear end of some truly awesome cars – from rally legends such as the RS200, to everyday family saloons, like the Sierra RS Cosworth that packed far-from-everyday punch. That’s not to say the RS badge has been without its duffers. Not even the die-hard Ford followers would argue the Fiesta RS Turbo was a wise move. It was an ugly little bloater. And so there was scope for an almighty screw-up when top brass decided to resurrect the RS badge and pin it to a Focus. In 2002 – five years after the last car to wear the RS badge bowed out – Ford unveiled the pumped-up variant of its family hatch. It was a fair first attempt. I remember driving one of the first press cars and it was immense fun, but hampered by torque steer. Fast-forward seven years and here we are again. RS fans have a new hero to worship – and with a mooted Cosworth variant canned by the credit crunch, this latest model is as fast as Fords are going to get any time soon. That’s not to say it’s a slouch. The snarling 301bhp RS is rapid in every sense of the word. First impressions of the car are very good. The RS is a meanlooking machine. That gaping front grille, steroid-enhanced wheel arches and bonnet vents give it a menacing look from the front while the imposing spoiler and cool carbon fibre, sculpted diffuser give it presence from the rear. Inside it’s not too dissimilar to the ST apart from the fact the Recaro seats are more comfortable. The driving position is superb, but it’s a little disappointing to see the steering wheel from the ST transferred over. But, to be honest, no-one’s going to care what it looks like on the outside or for that matter on the inside. I’d put up with seats made of granite and a steering wheel coated in sandpaper if it still made me feel like this RS does.

Ford Focus RS Price: £25,745 Engine: 2.5-litre, turbo Power: 301bhp Torque: 440Nm 0-60mph: 5.9s

Max: 164mph Ins: 19 Weight: 1,467kg Gears: Six speed CO2: 225g/km MPG: 30.5 (comb’d) Rating: *****

of breathtaking. Power comes throughout the rev range – helped by a healthy 440Nm dollop of torque – and it builds to a raucous crescendo accompanied by a stomach-churning rasp. The engine is alive with noise, huffing and puffing as it sucks in air and punches out power. Performance stats back-up the in-car feel – the 0-60mph dash is despatched in 5.9s and it’ll go all the way to top out at 163mph. Much has been said about the lack of four-wheel drive – here all that power is channelled through the front boots which sounds like a recipe for shredded tyres. But Ford’s engineers have added a system called RevoKnuckle – sounds Mike Tyson-esque, I agree, but it certainly does the job. Torque steer is practically non-existent and couple that with a wider track, lower ride height and faster steering and this is one utterly awe-inspiring car to drive. There aren’t many Fords that make you feel as special as this RS. It’s a culmination of years of hot hatch R&D and the masters of motorsport really have got it spot on. This RS will go down in history as one of the greats to wear that iconic badge – and deserves the sales success it’s going to enjoy.

by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine, www.CarDealerMag.co.uk

That 301bhp, beefed up ST-sourced 2.5-litre powerplant is sublime. The turbocharger has been wound up a few notches and with a five-pot soundtrack it’s nothing short

Wayne David MP / Bedwas Colliery Site? Leave it alone! The other week, Caerphilly County Borough Council decided to press ahead with proposals to build up to 650 houses on the Bedwas Colliery and Benzol site. This decision was taken despite overwhelming public opposition and against the views of the Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen Community Action Group, Jeff Cuthbert, the local Assembly Member, and myself. There are many reasons why we are against the proposed development but, for me, the most important reason is the level of severe contamination at the site. The Council have tried not to reveal what is buried there but by using the Freedom of Information Act it has been found out that the scale of contamination is truly frightening. In this report it is revealed that buried at the site are heavy metals, asbestos, cyanide, sulphuric acid, ammonia and many other contaminants which are potentially harmful. Recently in the High Court a successful action was taken against Corby Council. The Council was held responsible for a number of serious public health problems which occurred after the Council had failed to take necessary precautions when clearing a contaminated site. Naturally, I do not want the risk of any potential pollution adversely affecting the people that I represent. For houses to be built on the Bedwas site, up to 94,000 cubic metres of contaminated soil would have to be removed.

This would involve literally hundreds of lorry journeys to and from the site. Apart from the obvious risks of airborne contamination for the people of Bedwas and Trethomas, for the Council to ensure the safe transport of this material and the remediation of the soil that remains, it is likely that over £20 million would have to be spent. In these difficult economic times, I strongly believe that it would be far better if the Council did not pursue their plans. Instead the contaminated soil should be left undisturbed and made safe. This is a vitally important local issue and if people stand up and be counted we can win!

Gadgets Review: Wakey Wakey

The late October change in the clocks makes the mornings lighter and so it’s easier to get up, isn’t it? Wrong! The colder mornings of November leave you feeling you’ve gone to sleep in treacle coated PJs. It’s going to take more than a gentle bleepbleep from the alarm clock to part you and your duvet. Clocky Price: £29.95 www.firebox.com Now this is an alarm clock that could ‘wheelie’ get on your nerves. Clocky is your standard sleep disturber but with one subtle difference – wheels. If you’re one to keep hitting the snooze button to catch a few extra minutes in bed, Clocky is designed to get you up and about. How? Well, if you’re not quick enough when the alarm sounds the wheeled wonder scoots off your bedside table and finds a place to hide – forcing you to get up and find it to stop its incessant racket. Cruel, but it does the job. Wakeup light from Philips Price: £99.99 shop.philips.co.uk If you feel that Clocky is going to have you stressed before the day even gets going (or you’ve already tried it and beaten it to death), a better option might be a wakeup light. Simulating a gentle sunrise, light gradually increases over 30 minutes in advance of your set wake up time, before adding in a bird singing or a gentle beep. The intensity of the light, and the volume of the bird or beep are both adjustable.

November2009.indd 34

My Local View / November 2009 Voco Alarm Clock Price: £34.95 (50 phrases) or £44.95 (150 phrases). www.firebox.com How much more pleasant would it be if instead of waking up to a noise that sounds like the ‘wrong’ buzzer on Family Fortunes, you had the gentle soothing sound of your own personal butler? And better still, what if your butler had the quintessentially British voice of Stephen Fry? Starting with gentle birdsong, one of 50 different phrases (or 150 in the deluxe version) spoken by Mr Fry himself will remind you that your estate needs your attention. Phrases include: “I trust you will be giving the world the benefit of your appearance today? The ignorant and rudderless are awaiting your appearance”. Then as you switch it off “Sir has a firm touch, but very fair”. Great fun and so civilised. A version for Madam is also available. Micromark Tea Express with Alarm Clock Price: Around £30. Version with radio also available for £35. Widely available online and from retail outlets. Oh yes, the 1970s are alive and well and coming to a bedside near you. Not everything from that decade was a bad idea, and if a cup of tea is an essential to get you going, this could move you along nicely. The water comes to the boil while you are asleep and as it flows into the teapot the alarm goes off. This gives you a few seconds waking time before the tea is brewed and ready to deliver its caffeine jolt.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery / Dig it! If you take a drive out in the country, where they grow crops rather than cattle, you will notice that autumn is the ploughing season. I love to look at the crisp clean rows of freshly ploughed furrows – there’s a real art to it, I think. I did have a go once, on a big old Massey Ferguson tractor; if ploughing is an art, then I think mine was very ‘modern’! Anyway, we should be doing our garden version of ploughing at this time of year – we call it digging! Before you all go running off to read another column (may I suggest the ‘thought for the month’ by the way) to try and avoid any strenuous work, let me say this …. Digging is fun! I did some digging today: I felt my heart go ‘boomdiddyboomdiddyboom’, which is apparently a good sign; I got pleasantly warm; I had this fantastic sense of achievement as I looked back at the patch I had dug: I worked up a good appetite (okay that’s not unusual I admit) and I didn’t have to pay anything to run on a treadmill while watching Whitney Houston on a video screen – result eh?! Healthy living, exercise and fresh food – digging ‘ticks all the box’s’ So if you want to grow some lovely fresh vegetables next year – now is the time to dig over the lawn (best to check with your partner first) and start to prepare – ‘preparation is the key to success’ said someone so famous I can’t recall their name.

Get an all year round Summer Tan Get a healthy glow in the comfort of your home or workplace! It only takes 15 - 20 minutes.

So when you ‘home plough’ you need to do just as the farmers do; that is, you need to turn the soil over 180 degrees. You want to end up with whatever used to be on the soil surface 1 foot down under the ground, and the soil that used to be 1 foot under now sits on top. Autumn digging is one of the few times when we are allowed to hide the rubbish ‘under the carpet’. Over the winter the weeds and leaves which you have buried will rot down to create compost underground (where it is needed), and the old soil which is now on top is exposed to the frost and rain which will help it to crumble down, so that by next spring it will be ready for you to sow your Radish and lettuce – Perfect!” It is always good to hear from you on 07891 285 166 or apairofcrookes@lcsuk.net.

Thought for the Month / Light of the World For as long as I can remember (about 2 weeks!); I have been a big fan of fireworks. To give you some sort of measure of this affection, let me tell you that as a teenager I would save up my dinner money week after week during the autumn and unbelievably would actually go without any lunch ….well except maybe a curly wurly … just so that I could get another pack of rockets or the latest ‘skydazzling windowrattling eardrumperforating Air bomb repeater’. On the 5th of November our neighbours would charge friends to come and have a look over the fence – and who could blame them it was quite a spectacular display. Years later, I was fortunate enough to be involved with Firework displays at our lovely Castle and at the Garden Centre (anybody remember those ‘Santa’s firework parties’?) and it was really satisfying to hear folks obviously enjoying the combination of music and fireworks …it’s great when people ‘get it’!

But if I am honest, I am not sure that I have been as effective at putting on a ‘Jesus display’. I’m not sure that people ‘get it’. Most people just don’t want to talk about him ….which is crazy when you think how much we love to talk about Simon Cowell: and yet in 2000 years time Simon will be off the conversation menu, while Jesus will I am sure still be causing a stir. Why did Jesus call himself the ‘light of the World’? It’s a big claim. I think he was saying that he is essential for Life …as it was intended. Imagine life without light: people bumping into each other, getting frustrated; sickness; not knowing what’s around the corner; shouting, confusion; nothing quite as good as it should be. Sound familiar?

Ever since I was about 11years old, I have also been a big fan of Jesus – who calls himself ‘the light of the World’, and he has done some pretty spectacular things over the years too…to say the least!

The Legal Eagle / Adoption II Last month we considered the publicity that has recently surrounded celebrity adoption. It has been suggested that celebrities often rely upon their wealth to speed up what would otherwise be a very long and drawn out process. Within the United Kingdom stranger adoption together with step parent adoption can often take many months to reach conclusion. When dealing with step parent adoption proposed applicants must give notice to Social Services of their application in writing three months prior to commencing the proceedings.

Photographs are often taken of the children with the Judge. Unfortunately if the Social Services report raises any issues or concerns as to the proposed adoption then a Guardian must be appointed by the Court on behalf of the child who will also prepare an additional report. In this instance matters can become more complicated and drawn out.

Thereafter a written application is lodged at the Court which prompts the preparation of a detailed written report by Social Services. The Consent must be obtained from the absent parent to the adoption or in certain circumstances the Court can order that the Consent be disposed of. Providing the Social Services report does not raise any issues or concerns, which centre around the child’s welfare which must of course be given paramount consideration then the Judge will make an order for the adoption. A date for what is now known as the Adoption Ceremony will be fixed. The Adoption Ceremony is attended only by the Parents, Children and Judge. Lawyers are excluded and emphasis is on the happy nature of the occasion to be seen as a celebration.

Stranger adoptions, where children are placed by an Adoption Agency take a similar procedure. There is an additional step however whereby the Court must make a Placement Order confirming the placement of the children with the proposed adopters before the commencement of the adoption proceedings. In certain circumstances foster parents may also lodge an application for adoption in relation to a child who has been within their care. Again this can be a complicated procedure and in the event you are considering embarking upon an adoption then we would always recommend that you take advice from a suitably qualified specialist.

My Local View / November 2009

Getting Ready to Move So, you are finally ready to move house and are about to put it on the market. You’ve made improvements to increase the value, now all you need to do is to make it ready to show potential buyers and sell it as quickly as possible for the right amount. It’s the little things that catch people’s attention when they are viewing homes. Look at your house through new eyes starting from the kerb outside. This is where any potential buyer will first see your house and we all know how important first impressions are. Tidy up everything at the front of your house and hide the dustbins. If they cannot be hidden ensure they are as neat and as unobtrusive as possible. If you have a garden at the front of your house then make sure it looks as fabulous as possible by investing in a few new pot plants in full bloom. Repaint the front door, polish or replace any door furniture and make sure the outside of your house is as pristine as it can be. Other painting, if not done previously should be bland and unobtrusive; stick with neutral colours such as the ubiquitous magnolia. And don’t forget to repaint all the woodwork. Once through the door the next impression is your hallway, so once again ensure this is as inviting, bright and cheerful as possible. Hide any coats and shoes and place a vase of flowers or a nice piece of art on view. Your house should be spotlessly clean and tidy throughout. De-clutter as much as possible but don’t make the house looked too sterile, people need to see that this is a home not a showhouse. Hire a carpet and furniture cleaner to give everything a thorough scrub and perhaps hire a cleaning firm to spring clean every part of your house. Consider removing some of your furniture if possible to give the impression of more space. Maximise natural light by removing any net curtains and don’t forget to clean the windows. Put lights in any gloomy corners and create a sophisticated atmosphere. People are buying a lifestyle rather than a home.

November2009.indd 62

Some people can see through your furniture and decor and imagine their own in your space but sadly these potential buyers are few and far between. Think of the type of people that are likely to buy your house and create the appropriate lifestyle look they require. Purchase a few interior design magazines to get an idea of how to dress your own house but don’t spend too much money, if any, as it will not necessarily increase the value of your home. On viewing days give your house a quick once over making sure everything is in order and that it looks the best that it possibly can. For many years people have advocated brewing fresh coffee or baking bread to add to the ambience of the home, but scented candles or other means of perfuming the air are less time-consuming and just as effective. Remember, first impressions count for a lot when it comes to buying and selling houses so make sure the first impression your house gives is one that instantly welcomes your potential buyer and makes them feel as at home as you do.
