Our machines are fixed into the vehicles, they run on fuel & have their own water tank, similar to a fire engine, we simply run 2 pipes into your home, the 1st pipe is similar to a jet-wash which sprays our 100% safe detergent solutions into the carpet, the second pipe disperses steam at 240 degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to kill germs, bacteria & all carpet bugs which then gets extracted into our on board waste tank. This process is the best; most thorough clean you can have for your home

Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community

We’ve just over six months before the Caerphilly Miners Hospital is decommissioned and the site is transferred to United Welsh Housing Association (UWHA). UWHA plans to grant the Caerphilly Miners Centre a 99 year lease on the Beeches building. What we’ve been up to…. The Caerphilly Miners Centre Committee has been very active in preparing to take on the building as a Centre for the Community. These are some of the things we have done this year: • We have set up a company limited by guarantee, which limits the liability of the Directors of the Company; we are in the process of applying for Charity Status. • We have applied for two large grants to pay for the building works and this will continue until we have secured the £0.5 million needed to invest in making good the external fabric, installing services and a lift, and providing car parking. • We have successfully raised just over £2,000 from events and activities, e.g. the Caerphilly Ladies Choir gave us a wonderful concert in Wesley Church in February, the sale of Christmas cards, Vicky Thomas, one of our members, ran a half marathon, we’ve run raffles and received kind donations. • Our membership scheme is growing – we now have over 120 members. • We have started to develop projects to go inside the building when it opens – these take time to prepare – these are: • Getting anchor tenants into the building • A Heritage and Tourism - Making History – Project • A respite project for carers and cared for people • Healthy living activities – we’re hoping to work with GE Aeronautics on this.

Can you help? We’re looking for people who: • Know their way around the neighbourhood and can spread the word about the project, might distribute leaflets to their street, or might tell their networks about our work • Know how to use a computer or might be interested in keeping our website up to date • Are interested in any of the projects outlined above and are prepared to contribute ideas or make connections • Can contribute to fund-raising activities • Have some experience or interest in marketing, design and promotion.

Home Improvements

KITCHENS FOR LIVING Katherine Sorrell

What makes a good-looking, functional kitchen? Careful planning is the answer plus a little bit of lateral thinking… These days, kitchens aren’t just for cooking in, or even for eating; they’re for socialising, doing homework, painting, reading, chatting, catching up with the accounts, watching TV or simply hanging out. So how do you go about designing a space that really works for you? First, assess exactly what you need from the kitchen. The panel on the right will give you a good start. Next, do plenty of research – read everything about kitchens you can get your hands on, and visit every showroom within reach. It really is the best way to establish what styles you like, and what you can afford. Then, before you get bogged down with the detail, think about the space as a whole. If your kitchen is on the small size and you’re planning on investing in it, it might be worth, at this stage, considering either amalgamating it with an adjacent room or extending. If that’s not possible, can you enlarge a doorway or knock through a ‘hatch’ to give a feeling of extra space, and better sight lines to what’s going on elsewhere in the house? Perhaps you can create more room by moving the washing machine into the garage or under the stairs, or by fitting a fold-down dining table? Anything you can do in which to create a larger floor area will help. Next: layout. Plan it with the utmost care to ensure that the room is easy to use and comfortable to be in. You don’t want to have to walk right across the kitchen to put the crockery away, tripping over the dog and the child practising headstands on the way. Nor do you want to have to manoeuvre around a dining table every time you need to get from the cooker to the sink. In technical terms, experts

Magnet’s new Studio Spectrum range boasts white gloss doors brightened by mix-and-match coloured glass panels. From £336.95 for a 600mm single floor unit. For stockist details, go to www.magnet.co.uk/find-your-showroom.

Designing your kitchen? Ask yourself these questions first… • Who will use the room, how often, and how many at a time? • How will it be used - for semiprofessional cooking, regular family meals or the occasional microwave dinner? And what about other activities - homework, watching TV, doing the washing or ironing? • Do you like using high-tech appliances? What wiring and plug sockets will be required? Will you keep small appliances out on worktops, or hidden in cupboards? • How much storage do you need, and of what type? For cupboards, do you prefer solid or glass doors, or maybe lots of open shelves? Will you have some unfitted elements, such as a dresser or sideboard? And would you prefer built-in or free-standing appliances? • What about worktops - wood, stainless steel, composite, stone or laminate? And flooring - ceramic or stone, brick, rubber, wood, cork, vinyl or lino? Collect as many samples as you can, and lay them out together to give an idea of the overall effect.

recommend a ‘work triangle’ between the cooker, sink and fridge (in practice, this doesn’t always work, but aim to leave uninterrupted space between the areas you use more frequently). An island unit is great for maximising space, but needs to be well designed – within one step of the other worktops, not so deep that you can’t reach across it and, ideally, positioned so that the cook can see what else is going on in the room. In addition, room to cook in the way you want and John Lewis’ Leckford kitchen features Shaker-style doors in warm oak and a choice enough cupboards and shelves to of four delicate painted shades. Instinct, before unpacking, or ensuring that the bin is inspiration and imagination are the secret close to the chopping board. ingredients in this recipe, helping create Ultimately, of course, what defines a a room that’s comfortable and functional, really great kitchen is much more than a as well as homely, hospitable and heartset of guidelines. Motoring Most Profitable Cars 20

CAR companies turn over billions of pounds every year and bank millions in profits – but which cars are the most profitable? It’s a question we’ve been pondering for some time. All car manufacturers can flog a car, but what makes the difference between a bumper profit margin and a tiny one? Well, we asked a host of industry experts, professors and insiders to help us come up with this list. They told us cutting costs and maximising returns in the automotive world is all about sharing expertise and platforms – do that and car manufacturers can dramatically increase their profits. Here are some of the cars that our experts believe are real cash cows for their makers. BMW 3-Series It’s the salesman’s mile-muncher, but its premium price and relatively cheap production costs mark the 3-Series out as a winner for the marque. Our experts said it was mostly down to excellent cost control, the fact cars are often highly specified and usually sold for a premium over similarsized cars like the Ford Mondeo. McLaren MP4-12C One of the shock cars to emerge from our research was the new McLaren. Although development costs are high, the actual car is relatively inexpensive to make in relation to the high retail price. Our experts said the carbon chassis could be the cheapest to produce ever while many physical components have been replaced by more cost-effective electronics. If they sell the numbers forecast at between £160-170k it could be one of the most profitable cars ever! Range Rover Sport The Range Rover Sport benefits from all factors that make a model profitable: It’s based on an existing chassis (Defender) which keeps build costs low. It’s sold for a

premium with lots of added extras. And it’s been kept on sale for a long period of time without a major redesign. All these add up to a holy grail in terms of profitability. VW Golf Described by our experts as ‘the daddy’ of platform sharing, VW isn’t one of the most profitable makers without good reason! The Golf is responsible for two million units a year and currently provides underpinnings for a huge array of Seat, Audi, Skoda and other VW models. Many are sold for a premium but cost no more to make, adding a healthy balance to VW’s bottom line every year. Aston Martin Cygnet Ok, we know this hasn’t arrived yet, but the baby Aston has the potential to be a real profit centre for the maker. Essentially rebadging a Toyota iQ and charging £30k-plus for it – and that’s before buyers have shelled out on extras – could spell happy times for the marque. However, despite its potential, our experts warned this would only be possible if buyers like it… Ford Transit It’s not just cars that add substantially to a manufacturer’s bottom lines – vans do too! The Ford Transit is sold in markets around the world and our experts believe it is one of the most profitable vehicles on sale in Europe. Low production costs and decent volumes help keep the cash flowing for the Blue Oval. By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

A group of 18 local children are travelling to Nepal in October on an expedition with local secondary school St Cenydd. Amongst them are Caitlin Roberts and Tom Hadfield who at 14 years of age will be two of the youngest in the group. After flying into Katmandu their expedition will take them through parts of the Himyalayas and they will be helping out in local schools, for example painting class rooms in schools they visit. To raise funds for the trip Caitlin and Tom’s parents are holding a Yard Sale on Saturday 28th May between 11am – 3.30pm at 40 and 44 Pembroke Court, Hendredenny, where there will be a wide range of quality new and used items such as toys, books, vases etc.

Tea and biscuits will also be available. Caitlin’s mum said “Our children are learning to be good citizens by helping those less fortunate in another part of the world where there is extreme poverty. By Nepalise standards we are very privileged and this is a good message for our young people to learn, however our children have to work hard to raise funds to be able to go so we hope to see you there”.

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

The Moral Compass As a Member of Parliament, I am sometimes asked what it is which guides my political action. The obvious response is that as a Labour MP, and elected as a Labour candidate, I take my cue from the Party to which I belong and take an active part in. But, there are occasions when Members of Parliament have to exercise their judgement on issues which transcend party politics. I am thinking of issues like abortion and capital punishment. On such issues, Members of Parliament have to exercise their own conscience, while at the same time, listening to the opinions of constituents. Some people argue that an MP should merely reflect the prevailing view of their constituents. I do not agree. Democracy in our country is essentially ‘representative’. This means that individuals are elected to represent their electors and if those electors are dissatisfied with the representation they have received, then they have the opportunity to elect someone different at an election. When that decision is taken, the electors weigh up a range of issues to decide whether an individual still commands their support.

Caerphilly Power Tool

This means that Members of Parliament should decide on a course of action which they believe is ‘right’ and not necessarily what is immediately popular. The question then is on what basis do the Members of Parliament makes their decision. I believe that all public representatives should have a ‘moral compass’ which guides their decision making. I am an active Member of the Christian Socialist Movement (CSM) and for me Christianity, in the broadest sense, provides the moral basis to determine the difference between right and wrong. This is, if you like, my moral compass and it is an element of the progressive centre left which has been present since the formation of the Labour Party. It is often said, with some truth, that the Labour Party owes more to Methodism than to Marx!

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

The 5 a Day Patio We are blessed with some great next-door neighbours; one family have got the knack of growing fruit trees in pots on their patio, and to be frank (I’d rather be Roger, but just for the moment I am going to be frank) beloved and I are quite impressed… possibly a little envious?!

So, how about you? Growing your own ‘5 a day’ is all the rage at the moment – do you fancy picking some fresh sweet fruit from your patio every autumn? It can easily be done. All you need is a big pot and a dwarf tree, and some compost. The big pot – something like a half barrel would be ideal, made from wood or plastic as they tend to retain more water than terracotta or stone pots.

As I write, their little trees are in full flower they are about 6 foot high and smothered in dainty white

You can only put 1 tree per pot, so you may want to consider 3 different varieties in 3 separate pots, just in case you have hungry neighbours too! The Dwarf Tree – you should be able to find dwarf forms of most fruit trees – but you must insist that the trees you buy are suitable for pot growing, this usually means that they are on what we call a dwarfing rootstock. If the supplier isn’t sure – don’t buy it.

Where there are flowers there will potentially be fruit, which means that by September there should be a bumper crop of cherries and plums next door, I must make a note to offer to help pick and consume some in the autumn – I like to help whenever I can…

The compost – I would use a soil based compost – John Innes number 3 would be ideal. Fill the pot right up to the top, and don’t be afraid to give plenty of water and I would use 6 month fertilizer tablets once a year (in the spring). Let’s get fruity folks!

flowers all along the branches.

If you’ve seen NEW hair boutique Iconic in Trethomas, you may have wondered where the inspiration for it came from… Well, it was the work of local artist Scott Clark, who used his skills to create a salon that is a true feast for the eyes... vintage, shabby, chic, funky, edgy, dramatic – that place has it all. From a desk propped up with bicycles to a ceiling covered with doors; cinema seats in the waiting area to murals in the washrooms; surfboards for shelves to a portrait carved into a wall Scott Clark has not missed making every detail count. In just one project he has turned his hand from painting to carving, design to photography… he is a jack-of-all-trades, and it’s certainly true to say he is the master of all of them. So what’s next for Scott Clark? He’s guest photographer at Dearden Studio producing beautiful portrait photography. He teaches art, and he sells his paintings and lifestyle photography from his website: www.scottclarkart.com. And there are further interior design projects on the horizon.

Scott Clark is a man in serious demand. Email: scottclarkart@gmail.com, or call 029 2088 0802.

Health Watch

Late Onset Diabetes Late Onset (or Type 2) diabetes is a serious but controllable disease. There is a strong genetic link and any individual having a parent with the condition is at risk, significantly more so if both parents are sufferers. However, other factors will significantly elevate this risk and even cause diabetes without the genetic factor. Of particular note is that of obesity, with around 55% of patients being obese when diagnosed. A sedentary lifestyle, a poor diet and high blood pressure can increase the likelihood of becoming diabetic. The symptoms are common to both early and late onset diabetes but typically appear much more slowly with type 2. Classic symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue and weight loss. Prevention is, of course, better than cure and if you know that several of the risk

factors apply to you, action sooner rather than later can make a difference. Unfortunately ageing is an additional cause so the longer you leave it the greater the possibility of developing problem later on. However if you do develop diabetes, good management of the condition is critical to your longevity and quality of life. Without management the condition can have serious health consequences including heart disease, kidney failure, blindness and a stroke. Management, particularly in the early stages, is by eating a healthy diet, increasing exercise and monitoring your blood glucose level. It is only if the condition worsens that you will need to take insulin usually in tablet form.

Tongue in Cheek - Working from Home

Larry No-Mates by Ted Bruning

I

t feels like a long time since I had any colleagues. Well, it’s four-and-a-half years, to be precise; so yes, it is quite a long time since I had any colleagues. But is that a good thing or a bad thing? I have always maintained – and it’s not a particularly original thought – that the pleasure you derive from your job really derives from those you work with. Whatever you do, from the ludicrously cushy to the back-breakingly hard (but barring the wilder extremes – I’m not talking rock-breaking in Siberia here), you soon start to take it for granted. I’ve been a journalist for many years, and the work has always been interesting with a fair few perks, mainly in the form of subsidised travel and lavish dinners thrown in. Not so much now as when I was in the brewing trade press; but I still get the odd trip hither and yon and a few days in Brittany or Belgium now and again do relieve the monotony. It’s work, and that’s that. You come to take money for granted, too, whether you’re just making ends meet like me or raking in obscene piles of moolah like, say, a banker (boo hiss!). But rich or poor (or poor-ish, at any rate), people in my experience tend to structure their lives according to their expectations and once they’ve settled into a means-related pattern, and always assuming a modicum of security, money becomes a secondary issue. Colleagues, to me, are the one thing you can’t take for granted. Some of them you’ll hate. Some of them you’ll love. (Taking either of these to extremes, however, is not advisable!) Some of them you’ll gladly share a few bevvies and a good gossip with down the pub after work. Some of them, on the other hand – you only have to glimpse them in the office boozer and you’re heading straight for the bus stop. Of course if you have no colleagues, you have no irritants. The one with the irritating laugh. The one with the irritating cough or sneeze. The one with the irritating opinions. You have no enemies, either: Louise from marketing isn’t constantly cosying up to the boss and plotting to subjugate your department to hers. And, of

course, you have no meetings. But you don’t get the good ones, either. Not just the after-work pint buddy, but the bloke who knows all about cars and advises you authoritatively against buying a five-year-old Kia. The one who knows just how you like your coffee. The one who’s recovered from the cold you’ve just caught and can tell you exactly how long it’s likely to last and what remedy he/she found particularly efficacious. The one whose wedding you went to, and who came to yours. No, on balance colleagues are a good thing. Even the ones you loathe serve to make your day less grey. If you’ve got them, if you’re still office-bound and haven’t yet experienced the glorious freedom that comes with working from home, cherish them. Forgive them their trespasses (within reason, that is). And if you don’t have them, if you’ve taken that leap into the working-from-home dark, join something. Whether it’s the Communist Party or the local amateur operatic society or (as in my case) the Rose & Crown Supporters’ Club, it’s a great comfort to know that when you’ve turned the computer off and had your tea, you have your ration of human contact to look forward to. Because if you don’t have colleagues, you can always have friends...

Explore Gelligaer Roman Fort The fort was excavated over 100 years ago – now you can explore the site and discover the stories of the Archaeologists, the Romans and the local Silure who made life a challenge for the Romans. Pick up a walk leaflet and guide from St Catwg’s Hall – and younger children can follow the ‘Clue Trail’ around the site. Bring a picnic and you can have a free day out discovering the story of the Romans in the Valleys.

On B4254 1.4 miles east of Llancaiach Fawr

www.romangelligaer.org

Walk in the footsteps of the Romans in Gelligaer We all know that the Romans occupied places like Caerleon and Cardiff – but did you know that they built forts in the Valleys to keep control of the native Silure tribe? Gelligaer, a village close to Llancaiach Fawr, is proud of the fact that they have 2 Roman forts – the site of the original wooden fort as well as the stone fort that was built around 111AD. Yet, until recently most people had no idea that the remains of the second fort lay beneath a field where horses run freely! The community has worked hard to secure funding from HLF and RDP – and now they have installed interpretation, created a viewing area and published a new guidebook and walk leaflet to help bring the story of the Romans and the native Silure to life for locals and visitors. There is even a clue trail for younger children to follow. The community would be delighted to welcome you and your family to a free day out – walking in the footsteps of the Romans in Gelligaer.

Recipe of the month Enjoy the wonderful flavour of fresh British asparagus with these deliciously simple topped toasts. To make them more substantial add some flaked smoked mackerel or ruffles of Parma ham.

Makes 6 Ready in 20 minutes

Asparagus Bruschettas 12 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 6 thin slices crusty bread (such as sour dough) 6 tbsp good quality olive oil 1 large garlic clove, halved 225g (8oz) goats’ cheese Handful of rocket leaves Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. 2. Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts. 3. Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts. 4. Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

Quick tips for Home Improvements

Kitchens

ZAC ZAC

Although planning, buying and installing a new kitchen is an expensive and time consuming process, it can make a huge difference to the quality of your home life. The kitchen is often the heart of the home with the room being a natural draw with its warmth and comforting smells. This means that people spend a lot of time in the kitchen so it is well worth the investment. It is also the one room that can really add value if you decide to sell your house – or indeed, if it’s looking tatty, devalue your property. Planning is the most crucial part of buying a new kitchen, so spend a lot of time and effort on this. Base this planning on how you use your kitchen now, and how you want to use it after the remodelling. What irritates you about the layout of your current kitchen? List the main activities that happen in your kitchen. What appliances do you want? And don’t forget the amount of CAERPHILLY space required to store all your stuff. Thought for the Month

Knowing you, knowing me - Aha! One of my favourite authors is Wilbur Smith – I have read all of his books, many of them twice. His love for Africa and her peoples is interwoven in all his very believable stories. When I go back to one of his yarns for a second read, after maybe ten years, it is a delight to see one of his characters turn up – and to recognise and remember them like an old friend. It’s as if you know them, and can smile at them, as they respond to situations that you can recognise from your own life and experiences. There is something of the author revealed in the book and It is the same with Bible. There are many people who have spent years studying all the words and theology in the Bible - ‘Gods only published work’, they can talk you round in circles about all the theory and history… but they never got to know the author – what a waste. Like most books, The Bible can tell us something about the author, and about us to.

When Jesus turned up giving the scholars of that era (the scribes and Pharisees) a really hard time, he did it because they knew all about the ‘letter of the Law’ but had missed the heart of the law. So, how have we approached the good book? God doesn’t just want people to know about him, he wants us to know him. That means it could get personal. Is that a problem? Or is that where the ‘fun’ starts? Those Wilbur Smith books wouldn’t have worked for me if I hadn’t let them get personal – that’s how they became special and so enjoyable. I Love reading the Bible when I have time to sit back and consider how I could fit in the story – I have had some great ‘Aha! moments’, when I have seen something of God or me in the story. I pray we will get time for more ‘Aha! moments’ Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net

The Legal Eagle - Social Media ‘Tweeting in the Legal Profession’. 60

The rise in electronic communication and social networking has now not only extended to the legal profession by a variety of solicitors firms, but it can now been seen in the Supreme Court. It was reported in February 2011 that the Supreme Court has now given the go-ahead for people to ‘tweet’ from inside the court room. The court has in fact issued guidance to on the use of live text-based communication from the court room, which applies to legal teams, journalists and members of the public. Therefore, in the Supreme Court ‘tweeting’ is now permitted from the court room. However, it is noted that ‘tweeting’ from the court room will not be permitted in cases where there are formal reporting restrictions, such as the family cases where the welfare of a child is concerned, or where the publication of proceedings might prejudice a pending jury trial, and other such exceptions.

It must be noted that this guidance is limited to the Supreme Court. What does it mean to the public? It means that you can gain instant information on decisions made during the court room, bringing the public up to speed on legal developments. To Solicitors, it can also prove the importance of social networking not only as a medium of publicity, but for obtaining up-to-date legal news. Alongside this, Evans and Greaves are now pleased to announce their news Twitter page, where you can find our link from the website as detailed in this article.
