Caerphilly Events update Hi all, August is the month that many of my advertisers take a well earned rest and you may notice that the magazine is a little thinner!
Pages 12
Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery Page 26
Not to worry as we still have a lot of great information about local events and good causes to share with you.

Notably, BBC CYMRU have taken a full page ad to publicise the Proms in the Park event which will be taking place in Caerphilly on the 10th of September. If this event appeals to you then you need to get your skates on as tickets are now on sale. Further information is available on page 12 in the events team update column.
Can you help?
Also, last month The Black Cock Inn on Caerphilly Mountain launched a Family day offer on Thursdays where kids eat free when accompanied by two paying adult. This popular pub will be a great place to visit with a long summer break ahead for our school kids.

Beauty Tips Foot Care It is wonderful to be able to throw off our boots and socks during the summer and to wear colourful open shoes. But if you have cracked heels and overgrown toenails, those summer sandals should be left in the cupboard until you have taken the time to give your feet a bit of love and attention. Dry heels or any areas of hard skin are the first uglies that should be dealt with. With the trend of taking a shower rather than a bath – all the more so in the summer – your feet don’t have a chance to soak. Run a bowl of warm water with some moisturising bath oil or even a little olive oil. Leave your feet to soak for at least five minutes, then using a pumice stone or foot file rub away the hard areas. Using an exfoliating granular foot scrub will remove surface dry skin from the whole foot. Toenails next. They should be cut straight across with a strong pair of nailclippers, then any rough edges taken off with a good quality nail file. Don’t cut them too short though or you risk exposing delicate

skin. Put some cuticle remover cream around the base of the nail, then using an orangewood stick gently push the cuticles back. Hairy toes might have been fine for Bigfoot, but it’s not a good look for you, so use wax or cream to remove any hair on your toes. Then apply a rich moisturizer all over your feet and leave it to soak in for as long as possible. Use a little nail varnish remover to clean your toenails before applying two thin coats of nail varnish. Finally, if you find that you have difficulty even reaching your feet, let alone scrubbing and clipping, a professional pedicure is well worth the money and will last several weeks.

Caerphilly events update
Hi everyone, The busy summer events season is in full swing with everyone here in the Events team working hard to deliver some fantastic events. As I write, The Big Cheese is nearly upon us… so I hope the weather was kind! Life’s a beach ...and the beach was Blackwood! Thousands of visitors flocked to Blackwood’s High Street on 16th & 17th July to see their favourite kids TV characters and summer festivities in bucket loads. With children’s funfair rides, craft stalls, samba bands and workshops, contortionist, Punch and Judy and a 50 foot beach smack bang in the middle of the High Street! The atmosphere was truly delightful with visitors from far and wide joining in the fun. Blackwood retailers expressed their delight with the event and joined in the summer fun wearing floral garlands and coming out of shops to talk to visitors. We look forward to putting on more events in Blackwood and plans are already afoot for Blackwood’s Dickensian Christmas Market on 3rd & 4th December (yes Christmas already!). BBC Proms in the Park tickets – out now! I am pleased to say that the much awaited announcement has arrived …BBC Proms in the Park tickets are on sale! We are extremely excited to be working with BBC Cymru Wales to bring spell binding magic to Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields in Caerphilly on Saturday 10th September.
With a line up of singers, celebrity presenters and BBC National Orchestra of Wales performing at this evening of classical entertainment. You can buy your tickets from The Visit Caerphilly Centre, in person or over the phone. The Centre is open every day 10am – 5.30pm, Telephone 029 2088 0011. If you prefer to book online, go to www.blackwoodminersinstitute. com. Purchase your tickets in advance for £10.00 per person (children 12 and under with an accompanying adult are free). Tickets on the night will be £12.00 per person. We hope lots of you will pack a picnic and come along to enjoy the very first Caerphilly BBC Proms in the Park, which will be televised along with Hyde Park, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Keep an eye out for an announcement confirming artists and presenters, very soon! We’ll keep you posted with more news on BBC Proms in the Park in the next issue along with information on The Tour of Britain, which Caerphilly is hosting for the final stage of the Welsh race. Taking place in Caerphilly on Wednesday 14th September, spectators are invited to see the finale of this exciting race, which will be televised. It’s back to Big Cheese planning for now, catch up with you all soon.
Enjoy the summer… enjoy the events. Sally Walters Marketing Officer Advisory Services Regeneration & Planning Caerphilly County Borough Council

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery
Scary Plants...ideal for Kids! There is one plant which always makes me smile, it reminds me of the man-eating plant in ‘The little shop of horrors’ – I refer to the fantastic Venus Fly trap. Now, with the school holidays upon us, and parents all around Caerphilly looking for ideas and hobbies to keep their little darlings occupied for a few weeks … (possibly years with this little baby) a little ‘horticultural horror’ maybe worth considering.
But beware there are tiny very sensitive hairs on those traps, which when stepped on in the wrong way by an unsuspecting insect taking a Sunday afternoon stroll, cause the trap to snap shut in a nano second. The peckish plant, having trapped the screaming insect (it is possible that I am exaggerating in places here), then slowly dissolves it within the trap and drinks the juices for lunch – yum – No flies on this little fella eh?
Think of it as a ‘plant pet’; which needs very little care, feeds itself, loves to be left in the rain, and doesn’t need to be taken for a walk … and costs about a fiver!
So, how does it work?
Well, I am glad you asked. Those red/green leaf like traps, are an amazing piece of natural creative engineering, they may look attractive and innocent enough at first glance (there again so did my beloved…).
So, how easy are they to look after?... just water them, put them in a saucer or shallow bowl and keep it topped up with water and leave to stand until the flies turn up (inside the house or outside in summer). I kept one outside in a pot for about 3 years, over winter too, and it was fine until last winter when I should have brought it in during the very cold weather.
They do die back a bit over winter but will normally shoot back in spring; as yet I haven’t heard any of them shouting out “Feed me!” but you never know… Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net 02920 864730

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly
With the dust now settled on the Welsh General Election, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet in place and its legislative programme agreed, I will be doing my utmost to stand up for the people of Caerphilly and Wales, as promised in the Labour election manifesto on which I stood. It is vital that we protect our public services as much as possible from the spending cuts being imposed on us by the UK Coalition Government. Following the UK Coalition Government’s spending review last October, Wales has been forced to cut its budget by £1.8 billion over the next four years. Because of this drastic reduction, we have had to do our best to protect spending on our key services like education, health, housing, social services and transport so that no one area suffers disproportionately. This is why a certain party’s recent pledge to maintain current health spending was so ridiculous – it would have meant cutting the education budget by one-fifth! Unfortunately, the cuts being imposed on us mean that we have had to reduce our capital budget by two-fifths over the next four years – that is, the budget that pays for big infrastructure projects like hospitals, roads and school buildings. This has meant that the Welsh Government has had to review its school building programme, known as ‘21st Century Schools’, asking councils such as Caerphilly to look again at plans to build new schools.
However, it is not all doom and gloom. In March, we were able to offset some of these painful cuts being imposed on us by releasing £105 million for capital infrastructure spending this year – providing vital support to the construction industry in Wales. This means we were able to make around £4 million available to Caerphilly Council to complete the construction of the new Cwm Ifor Primary School in Penyrheol – providing a fantastic new learning environment for local schoolchildren. So while there will be tough times ahead thanks to the UK Coalition Government’s spending cuts going too far and too fast, I and the Welsh Government of which I am part will be doing everything we can to protect people in places like Caerphilly from the worst effects, and making sure that we have strong, effective and responsive public services here in Wales.

Mouth Watering Recipe
Monkfish has a wonderful firm flesh with a meaty flavour and is well suited to roasting, however cod loin or a thick piece of salmon fillet will work just as well.
Serv es Tak 4 One es hou r
700g
(1lb 9oz) monkfish fillet 2tbsp olive oil 1tsp lemon juice 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning 8 medium-sized waxy potatoes, such as Desiree Salt and freshly ground black pepper 225g (8oz) cherry tomatoes 1 lemon, sliced Sunflower oil for shallow frying Cut the monkfish into large chunks and place in a shallow roasting tin. Mix together the oil and lemon juice and pour over the fish. Sprinkle over the Cajun seasoning. Cover and set aside for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Place the unpeeled potatoes in a large pan of salted water. Bring to the boil and boil for 5 mins. Drain and leave to cool for 10 mins. Peel the skins off the potatoes and coarsely grate the potato flesh into a bowl. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Using your hands, divide and shape the grated potato into about 8 flat cakes. Place the lemon slices in the roasting tin with the monkfish and cook in the oven for 15 minutes. Add the cherry tomatoes and cook for a further 5-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the tomatoes are tender. Heat 30-45ml (2-3tbsp) oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Fry the potato rosti, in batches, for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown, adding more oil as necessary. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Arrange the potato rosti on serving plates and top with the roast monkfish, lemon slices and tomatoes. Pour over any juices left in the roasting tin and serve immediately.
TOP TIP - If you’re not too keen on cajun then replace with a sprinkling of dried Italian herbs. Deadline for our August issue: Thursday 25th August 2011 - Follow us on Twitter: @mylocalview

The Legal Eagle Joining the Profession 38
What does it take to become a Solicitor? Many questions are asked as to what it actually takes to become a Solicitor, aside from the years of studying and thereafter training, and finally the Admission to the Roll of Solicitors. Solicitors are part of a profession and the definition of a profession is a ‘vocation founded upon specialised educational training’. Members of the profession agree when they join to abide by specified rules of conduct when in Practice. That duty to Solicitors does not stop following the studies at degree or even training thereafter, but it in fact continues throughout your legal career. If you are of the view that law may be the career path for you, the best place to start with your research is the internet.
And, it can be said that the Law Society webpage is an excellent tool for exploring any questions that you may have before commencing your law Degree or indeed deciding on the path of Law. More specifically the Law Society has a Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) website that is very helpful tool.

Thought for the Month
Heaven or Hell on Earth
I have been reading a rather controversial book recently; it is called ‘Love Wins’, by a likeable chap called Rob Bell.
ZAC ZAC
A lot of people have got upset by some of what he suggests, because it challenges us to think again about key issues such as Heaven and Hell, always emotive subjects – so I guess it is no surprise.
Here is the thing that has got me thinking.
When Jesus spoke about Heaven and Hell – he was often speaking in the context of Now, not always about what we think of as the ‘afterlife’. When we see scenes of tragedies such as African droughts, and war zones; we often describe them as looking like ‘hell on earth’… and is it just me or do we develop a degree of tolerance to these scenes; they don’t move us like We are MOVING !!! but only they did when we first saw them.
So, apologies for that … What are we to do then? I see a clue in the Lords’ Prayer. Jesus teaches us to pray ‘Let your Kingdom come – on earth as it is in heaven’ .
DECORATING DECORATING
On Earth as it is in heaven: that sounds like we can bring something of heaven to earth right now.
CENTRE
Perhaps if we can learn how to do that; to bring a taste of heaven, of God’s goodness, hope, healing and forgiveness to folks who feel like they are living in a kind of hell on earth – we may not have to get into so many heavy theological discussions.

Neighbourhood Policing
A message from Bedwas and Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector, Paul Staniforth: “Bedwas and Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Teams are encouraging shoppers to take extra care this summer when out and about in order to keep personal possessions safe and secure. The chances of being a victim of theft in Gwent are low, however, we are concerned about the amount of calls we have recently received reporting stolen purses. We advise following the tips below in order to do all you can to keep personal items such as wallets, purses, mobile phones and cameras safe and out of sight of potential thieves: - Don’t leave bags over the back of your chair and keep wallets and purses close to your body when in pubs, restaurants and other venues - If you use a handbag, keep a tight hold of it and ensure the zip or clasp is fastened and facing towards you - Carry wallets in an inside pocket - If someone bumps into you, make sure your purse or wallet is still in your possession - Don’t leave mobile phones or money where people can easily see them - Be discreet when using mobile phones and put them away as soon as you have finished using them - Don’t carry important documents or more money than you need
- Use a security lanyard to clip to your purse and your bag If you would like your very own personal security lanyard, then please contact the Bedwas Neighbourhood Policing Team on: 02920 857 454 or e-mail: bedwas@gwent.pnn.police.uk or Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team on 02920 857 453 or e-mail: caerphilly@gwent.pnn.police.uk The FREE lanyards have a clip at each end to fasten purses to handbags, deterring thieves from stealing items from handbags.” To find out what is happening in your neighbourhood and more about your local Neighbourhood Policing Team visit www.gwent.police.uk and enter your postcode. Rupert Murdoch and My Local View Readers may think it strange but there is a very direct link between My Local View and News International. No, My Local View is not owned by Rupert Murdoch and I don’t think that My Local View has yet achieved international media status. However, both My Local View and News International are in the same business of ‘communicating’ with the public. The past few weeks have been dominated by revelations concerning phone-hacking and the links between Rupert Murdoch’s empire and politicians. A number of enquiries have either taken place or are in the process of being established and it is pretty clear that illegal phone-hacking was far more wide-spread than previously believed and the relationship between Rupert Murdoch and senior politicians, including our current Prime Minister, was too close for comfort. The problem with News International is that it was more than prepared to ‘walk on thin ice’ when it came to obtaining stories and the idea of objective reporting has been something quite alien to newspapers like The Times, The Sun and The News of the World.
The first issue is relatively straightforward. Phone-hacking and police bribery are illegal and therefore should not happen. Reporting in a fair and balanced way is however a more difficult issue. Few would disagree that there should be ‘freedom of the press’ but ‘freedom’ cannot be an absolute principle. Alongside, and moderating the idea of ‘freedom’, there has to be balance and fairness. That is why the whole issue of how newspapers ‘report’ in a free society is a difficult but vital issue. Over the next few months, hopefully, there will be a long overdue debate in this country about the nature of press freedom and the safeguards which have to be introduced. And this brings me back to My Local View. My guess is that over the next few years, we are likely to see two trends. The internet will be increasingly seen as a vehicle for news and there will be more and more ‘local’ outlets for news. I welcome this because the less influence the likes of Rupert Murdoch have and the more opportunity there is for different views and opinions, the healthier our democracy will be.
