Hi all,

This is the last issue of the year and has lots of Festive content for you. Local resident, Luke Bamforth has submitted a couple of seasonal articles including the history of the humble Mince Pie - did you know its roots are medieval? I didn’t!

Our What’s on Guide also contains lots of fun packed events including the popular River of Light Lantern workshops and parade which seems to grow more popular with each passing year.

I also wanted to thank Lisa Williams and team from Dance & Stage Factor for organising a fantastic dance and singing event held at the end of November at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.

The event was held on the public stage and was throughly enjoyed by both centre visitors and parents alike (including me as a very proud Dad).

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to get in touch with positive comments about the magazine this year and for using the local businesses who are very keen in these tough trading conditions to gain more local customers and exposure. Working from home Radio 4 by Ted Bruning

I’ve just heard the most shocking thing. I was sitting here toiling away with Radio 4 chuntering away in the background when I distinctly heard the announcer refer to some unusually heavy rain as a déluge. Not a deluge (dehl-youj), a deluge (day-loojh), as if it were happening in France. And it suddenly brought it home to me that even educated people are forgetting how to speak their own language. I still can’t get used to the apparent fact that bosses no longer consider it adequate simply to head companies but have to head them up, like a footballer heading the ball spectacularly way over the bar. What, in this case, does the word “up” bring to the party? It’s completely redundant and has arrived in our language from German (where people don’t call but “rufen an” and don’t open or close the door but machen it auf or zu) via American. I suppose I’ve no objection to this sort of Germanification of English when Americans (who are, after all, half German) slip into it; but Radio 4? Aren’t they supposed to be the guardians of the language? Well, maybe not. But the Frenchification of a perfectly good English word like “deluge” is a lovely example of someone trying to look clever and ending up looking stupid, like the cookery writer who included “Marmite” in a long list of Latin-derived words that end in “-ite”. Marmite is actually French for a cauldron or cooking-pot, and has nothing to do with Latin-derived neologisms. Or the hilariously regular confusion of “potage” (French for soup) with “pottage” (a porridge of boiled legumes and the staple diet of the medieval peasant; survives into the modern era as mushy peas). If Esau really sold his inheritance to Jacob for a mess of “potage”, he was perhaps less of an unsophisticated brute than the Bible makes him out. None of this really matters, of course: language is a liquid, and attempts to dam its progress are doomed to fail. The Académie Française is a nationalistic folly and I’m glad we don’t have one. It’s the fact that the radio is always on in the background that makes the repeated malapropisms and mispronunciations grate so. I can no longer listen to “This Charming Man”, for instance, without actually shouting at Morrissey that he means “why ponder life’s complexities”, not “why pamper life’s complexities, which is a nonsense. Alas, he has clearly not heard me. Oh, and Morrissey: in “Suffer Little Children” I think you mean the squalid stench of death, not the stolid stench of death.

If the radio irritates me so, I hear you ask, why do I switch the blessed thing on in the first place? Well, being alone all the time has its advantages, but after a while the silence becomes terribly loud. The background murmur of human voices at least creates the illusion of company and staves off cabin fever; and as I’m thoroughly middle-class it has to be Radio 4. I could go on, but I sense you’re glazing over. Before I get off my high horse, though, there is one thing up with which I will not put. There is no such word as lonjeray. Underwear, in French is spelt “lingerie” (lin- as in “linen”), and is therefore pronounced lanjeree. The abomination entered the language, I believe, from Dallas when Swellen, she of the perpetually trembling lip, opened a lonjeray store in a vain attempt to declare independence from JR. I am prepared to accept the mispronunciation from those who do not have the benefit of the BBC’s resources. But I have heard it so often now, even on Radio 4, that I feel constrained to scream: THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS LONJERAY!!!

Caerphilly events update

We are preparing to conquer Christmas!!!….. Christmas is coming and boy oh boy do we know it! We have been talking about it since our summer events programme came to a close in August!! We do love a good Christmas event to keep us in festive mode mind you. Mulled wine, hot crepes, fudge …mmm… I cannot wait for our Christmas markets this year. Yes we are producing triplets this year with three delightful Christmas markets in our three key town centres. Offering delicious foods and delightful crafts, traders range from an impressive 150 at Caerphilly, 50 at Blackwood and over 20 at Bargoed. The three markets will be held on the three weekends leading up to Christmas. Blackwood Dickensian Market, 4/5 December, Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre, 11/12 December and Bargoed Christmas Market, 18 December. Sarah Kate and I have been beavering away to organise these events, which are offering various entertainment and activities for all the family. The young and old will have plenty to see and do at our uniquely themed Christmas markets. The downfall for us with these markets is the early starts! Last year it was 3am that some members of the team started work for the Caerphilly event. So whilst you guys are all out browsing the stalls and enjoying the atmosphere think of us wrapped up in our fluorescent jackets and thermals as we monitor each event from dusk til dawn!!! – Who said working in events was glamorous!

This year we are being given no time at all to prepare for Christmas on the home front; anyone would thing we don’t have homes to go to with our annual River Of Light Parade taking place on 23rd December!! But again, although we may have a little whinge this is a fun event for us all and acts as a celebratory occasion, marking the end of yet another year! The lantern parade is made up of hundreds of lanterns, which have been made by local groups and families at our weekend workshops on the lead up to the event. The workshops take place on 4/5,11/12, 18/19 December at Caerphilly Leisure Centre and are a lovely way to get out with your family and take part in a Christmas activity that the whole family can participate in. I always make sure I take my family along and we design a lovely lantern, which we take to the parade and join in the fun. Anyway enough socialising with you guys - better get on and use these last few days/weeks prior to the events to finalise arrangements. Stalls - check, barriers - check, entertainers – check!!! Think we’re nearly there!!!

I would now like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting our events programme for 2010. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and look forward to catching up again in 2011. Best wishes to all. Stacy Francis Events & Marketing Officer, Advisory Services, Economic Development, CCBC

We love it really!!! The adrenaline keeps us going at these busy times, and the satisfaction that we get from seeing visitors from local, national and international locations, enjoying something that we have pieced together really does make it all worth while. Early deadline for our January issue: Thursday 16th December 2010

14 If you’ve ever felt like you’re aimlessly drifting through life, then likely you’ve felt as if it’s too difficult to change. Over the next three months I’ll be giving Local View readers some simple tips to help you start making changes in your life.

Accountability and Responsibility Remember as a child when you made a mistake or got something wrong, you were encouraged to try, try again. So why is it as adults that when we go wrong we try and hide the fact to make sure nobody else finds out! We’re often driven by peer pressure and held accountable for our behaviour, actions and successes by the thoughts and opinions of others – and it’s getting worse as the power of the popular press and TV continues to increase. Imagine if you could create a peer group that worked exactly the same to hold you accountable and steer your successes, but they were peers that wanted only

your success and nothing more. Imagine the strength you gain from total, unconditional support. Dare2 Dream is delighted to be launching a networking, social and support group to nurture, encourage, and inspire you to reach your potential and live life at a greater level of fulfilment. As a member “Your Success” meetings will take place fortnightly providing you with an incredible 20+ opportunities a year to focus on your goals. Compare that to how many times you focus on your new year’s resolutions - maybe once...... Next new year when you realise you’ve made no progress!

Fingertip Perfection The state of our nails says a lot about us. You might think that beautiful fingertips are out of the question, due to your lifestyle or work commitments, but it is still possible to have attractive nails. • Even if your job involves getting your hands dirty, don’t scrub them. It’s better to clean under the nails with an orange stick and remove dirt with an anti-bacterial and hand-sensitive product. • Eat a healthy diet, which should, ideally, be rich in calcium, vitamin B and potassium. • Make regular use of hand cream and keep some next to every sink you use. Nail polish makes even the shortest nails look attractive, providing you use a muted tone and not a vivid colour to draw attention to the length. However, even if you don’t have a ‘hands on’ job, you might find your nail polish doesn’t last very long. Below are some tips to make it last longer. • Use a base coat for a smoother surface. • Make sure you add polish to the nail tips to reduce the possibility of chipping. • A build up of thin coats is better than one or two thick applications. • Use a clear topcoat to protect the colour. You can, if you wish, reapply topcoat every second day until you repaint your nails. • Allow at least 30-45 minutes drying time after application of the topcoat. Once dry, submerge your nails in cold water for a few minutes. Dry and then apply hand cream.

Contrasting Christmases!

It’s the December issue, which can mean only one thing, Christmas is quickly approaching. The time when large families congregate, more food is eaten than is humanely possible and thousands of pounds are spent on the latest, must have gadgets. Yet despite all these modern comforts and traditions of yuletide, it is easy to forget those who are experiencing a different type of Christmas. Even though I am not a religious person, I can clearly see the message that is conveyed in the Nativity story. The message of hope and love, that there is salvation even during difficult times. I think that this is important to bear in mind when we think of those who have lost their jobs in the last year and how financially harder this Christmas will be for them. There is comfort however in remembering that Christmas is about more than extravagant presents, it is a time for relaxation, with those closest to you, devoid of the stress of everyday life. Another demanding Christmas experience will be that of the soldiers on the front line in Afghanistan. It is impossible to imagine what they will have to endure this Christmas; not only are they away from their families and loved ones, but also they face the possibility of an attack at any moment. Yet they serve, they protect, they fight on Christmas day so that we can continue our safe, high standard of living that we enjoy in Britain. I think that it is necessary to spare a moment’s thought for these men and women over the festive season.

Please call for a quote today

Lastly, the Christmases of those in less fortunate countries will be worlds apart from our own, countries where children face the possibility of little or even no gifts. The charity Operation Christmas Child works very closely with children in Bosnia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and many other countries to distribute shoeboxes of presents collaborated by the public themselves. Although it is now too late to send your own shoebox of presents, you can still make a difference to a child’s Christmas. The interactive feature at www. operationchristmaschild. org.uk/shoeboxworld allows the user to create their own personalised shoebox online, you can even choose the gifts, wrapping paper and whether to attach a photo message. Last year, nearly 1.2 million children enjoyed a better Christmas through this scheme and they look forward to breaking the record this year. So please, when you’re fussing over the turkey this Christmas, slightly disappointed that the videogame isn’t the one you wanted or complaining about overindulging on chocolates, remember those who are experiencing real hardships this Christmas and spare a thought for them.

Wayne David MP

This year’s Remembrance Services were particularly poignant. Not only were people paying tribute to those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in two World Wars, we were also remembering those who had given their lives in more recent conflicts, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each year, I attend the service at the cenotaph in the centre of Caerphilly. As always, the service was sombre and dignified, and very moving. This year saw the largest attendance by members of the public that I have seen for many years. I was particularly pleased to see such a large number of children and young people. The youngsters came through local youth organisations like the Scouts and Brownies and their local schools. In fact, on the Friday before Remembrance Sunday, there was a special service held in Caerphilly specifically for young people. Again, this was very well attended. Each year, as well as attending the Caerphilly service, I try to attend services in other parts of the Constituency. This year I went to Bedwas for a service at the cenotaph before going on to a service at the St. Thomas’ Church in Trethomas. At all of these events, the Royal British Legion played an absolutely central role. Last year, the Armed Forces Veterans’ Minister visited the constituency and met with Veterans at a meeting held in Machen. The central message which the Minister gave to the

members of the Legion was that their organisation had a continuing and important role to play in providing support for ex-service men and women who had been involved in more recent conflicts as well as those involved in the conflicts of the last century. I was therefore delighted that British Legion members reported the fact that more Poppies had been sold this year than was the case for many years. The Royal British Legion is one of the UK’s largest membership organisations and it welcomes men and women of all ages, whether they have served in the Armed Forces or not. If you would like to become a member, please contact Mrs Alison Parkinson, the Branch Secretary for Caerphilly on (029) 20851395.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

It’s a boy..no, it’s a girl! As if plant names weren’t confusing enough: when it comes to that festive favourite the Holly, the whole thing gets very confusing…especially when it comes to recognising the difference between boys and girls… and let’s face it that’s an important thing to get right! For example, if you said to me you wanted a nice holly with bi coloured leaves (variegated if you want to speak ‘gardentalk’), but also had berries so that you could make some nice Christmas table decorations, I would advise planting a female variety as they produce the berries. Truth be known, you might also need a male variety to do all the hard work and provide the pollen for the horticultural romance to bear any fruit…in the shape of those gorgeous bright red berries. So off you go to your local garden centre top pick up a boy and a girl holly – they are great, easy to grow, all year round plants for any garden by the way – perfect for a hedge that will provide a fantastic habitat for wildlife such as songbirds and hedge hogs. Anyway, we digress; you turn up at the garden centre looking for a little girl holly, and spot one called Ilex ‘Silver Queen’ .

“Aha! We have a girl!” I hear you shout - But alas, actually you have a boy. Yep ‘Silver Queen’ is a boy, possibly a little confused, but a boy none the less. So what is my favourite female holly called? Why Ilex ‘Golden King’ of course! I kid you not, the male is called ‘Silver Queen’ and the female is ‘Golden King’. But as Mr Shakespeare almost said “what’s in a name?” If you pick up one of each you will have a very happy boy and girl, who will get on famously and produce some lovely bright winter foliage and berries each winter. So, it’s almost Christmas, let’s do as the wise men did, and go in search of the (Golden) King.

Jeff Cuthbert A.M for Caerphilly

It’s been a burning issue with me for some years to get the very best rail travel for those wanting to travel to Caerphilly and Cardiff. And that’s especially the case during peak hours. We have moved forward. There’s no doubt about that. More trains run every hour than a few years ago and considerable sums have been spent improving stations. This has been done to allow trains of up to six carriages to run during peak times. This will allow more passengers to ride in relative comfort and leave their cars at home. But where are these longer trains? Unfortunately, despite the investment of many tens of millions in the infrastructure improvements, ARRIVA have not brought in the additional rolling stock. It appears that the carriages are being used elsewhere on the network. The Welsh Assembly Government is, rightly, very keen to get people out of private cars and into public transport wherever practicable. If someone does not need to travel during the working day then public transport is often the best method of getting to work. Although Caerphilly Council’s decision to introduce park and ride charges at all stations will not help this.

So I’m continually pressing the Minister for Transport and ARRIVA to make good on the promise to provide these longer trains. What’s the point of substantial investment of public funds if the intended benefits don’t appear? Readers are welcome to contact me if they have comments to make or experiences of the local rail network to pass on. Health Watch Foot Faults 42

t some point in our lives we’re all likely to suffer foot faults. No, not the tennis variety, but some irritating foot conditions, the symptoms of which might only arrive now, even though they could have been picked up during the summer. Athlete’s Foot Not by any means confined to athletes, this fungal infection (tinea pedis) hangs out in bathhouses, swimming pools and showers. Typically transmitted in damp areas where people walk barefoot, the symptoms are easily recognisable. If you have scaling, flaking and itching between your toes, especially in the space between the fourth and fifth digits, then you might have athlete’s foot – even without the physique of an athlete’s body. Do not leave this condition untreated, as it can spread. There are many effective over-the-counter medications available, but severe or prolonged cases should always be referred to a doctor. A word of warning: it is essential to complete the recommended period of treatment as disappearance of symptoms is not proof of cure. And for next summer, remember that prevention is better than cure. Keep your feet as dry as possible and avoid sharing towels and footwear. Onychomycosis This terrifying-sounding condition is a fungal nail infection which can result from other untreated infections, such as athlete’s foot. It accounts for around fifty percent of all nail disorders and is more common in toenails than fingernails. Often wrongly regarded as merely a cosmetic problem, you can recognise it by thickening of the nail and yellowing or blackening, with the nails eventually becoming hard to cut and painful. Left untreated, the nail may separate from the nail bed and start to crumble. Failure

to address the problem at an early stage can lead to a prolonged period of treatment and, in extreme cases, surgery to remove the infected nail. Whilst good hygiene aids prevention, you can become infected in many ways. These include wearing shoes or socks that have become wet, or which harbour the organism. Improper fitting shoes, or injury to the toe or nail, can provide a weakened area for the fungus to take hold. It can also be contracted in the same way as athlete’s foot, but even household carpets and floor surfaces can harbour this fungus. There are various types of onychomycosis and it is difficult to eradicate. Whilst there are some effective over-the-counter remedies on offer, if the condition persists you should consult your doctor, who may require laboratory tests to be undertaken. Verrucas These painful growths on the soles of the foot, caused by a viral infection, are also known as plantar warts. They normally have a hard edge around a soft centre, sometimes with black spots, and often look like corns. The continual pressure of standing or walking on them causes acute pain. As with athlete’s foot, they are predominantly contracted in public changing rooms and swimming pools. Anyone with a cut or scratch on the foot is particularly vulnerable. Although verrucas can heal themselves, it is better to obtain advice on treatment from your doctor or pharmacist.

A brief history of the Mince Pie

We all love the humble mince pie, even those of us that don’t eat them like what it represents and that is Christmas. It is difficult to believe when you see them, perfectly formed, on the supermarket shelf that they have a history that stretches all the way back to the middle ages. It is thought that mince pies originated around the time of the crusades. They were a pie filled with chopped meats, fruits and peel and were infused by a mixture of spices that were introduced to the country by knights returning from the Holy Land. The inclusion of meat is not the only difference between the mince pie of today and that of the past. Unlike today’s small pie the original mice pies, known as Christmas Pye, was actually a large dish shared between diners and eaten with a spoon. The mince pie has always been popular, especially with royalty. In 1413 Henry V served them at his coronation and Henry VIII would have them served as a main dish during Christmas banquets. As popular as they were they were banned by Oliver Cromwell, along with hot cross buns, for a period during the mid 17th century. When they were finally reintroduced they had changed in size, resembling the modern individual pie of the present day. They were also served to guests in much the same way as today. Perhaps as a result of the puritanical view from which they had recovered the name had changed to Wayfarer Pies’.

It may seem strange to us that meat might be found in a mince pie it was normal from centuries. Most types of meat have been used at some time or other including pheasant and ox, but notable favourites were beef or mutton (16th century), tongue or tripe (18th century) and minced beef (mid 19th century). Although recipes written by Queen Victoria’s master chef, Charles Elme Francatelli, tell us that the Queen’s favourite mince meat contained minced beef they also show the presence of meat free varieties, something that was to become more popular in the years leading up to the present day when meat has disappeared from the mince pie altogether. So the next time you are about to bite into a mince pie take a moment to think of its history and take pride in the fact that you are continuing a tradition that has been around for hundreds of years. Events of Christmas past

Most people know that Christmas marks the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus, but that is not the only important event to have happened on the 25th of December. In fact whether by design or coincidence there have been a number of Christmas Day occurrences of interest. Here are just a few of them. • On Christmas Day in the year 800AD Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne, King of the Franks, as the first Holy Roman Emperor. • In 1066 William the Conqueror, fresh from victory against Harold and his Saxon army at the Battle of Hastings, chose 25th December as the day he was to be crowned as King of England. • 1497 saw the discovery of the South African province of Natal by the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama. In fact Natal is Portuguese for Christmas. • One of the many people that share a birthday with the baby Jesus is the famous English scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, who was born in 1642. He was most famous for discovering gravity and is considered by many to be the father of modern Physics. • It was Christmas Day in 1776 that saw the infamous crossing of the Delaware River by George Washington, during the American War of Independence. He was on his way to attack mercenaries employed by the British.

• It was on 25th December in 1941, during World War II, that the British governor of Hong Kong surrendered the island to Japanese forces after eighteen days of fierce fighting. • There was sad news in 1977 when the biggest star of silent film, Charlie Chaplin, died at his home in Switzerland. He was 88 years old. • Finally, on Christmas Day in 1991 Michail Gorbachev announced his resignation as the President of the USSR live on television. On Boxing Day the Soviet Union was officially disbanded effectively ending the Cold War.

Lighting Lighting can make or break your carefully planned and decorated room. Selecting the right set of lights can enhance and accentuate your living space by dramatically improving the appearance and atmosphere of any room. Three important points to consider when choosing lighting are function, mood and harmony. Function means what light you need for a particular activity. A kitchen requires different lighting than a study. Use reading lights, table lamps and free-standing uplighters or downlighters to create an inviting and adaptable ambience. Use several kinds of lamps at different levels to provide interest. Mood is influenced by the lighting you choose. Add dimmer switches to your main lights for flexibility. A bright room is uplifting while a darker room is cosier. The design of fixtures also contributes to this mood, contemporary, traditional, simple or ornate. This also harmonises the décor. If your interior design is modern, an ornate fixture could look incongruous. T r y to match the lighting to the style of the rest of your room. Accent lighting is a decorative effect that serves little practical purpose but adds an eye-catching touch to your home. Use it to draw attention to art, plants or other treasures. Utilise lighting to emphasise your interior design; plan it stylishly as well as for function.

Recipe of the month Nothing beats a warming pie during the cold winter months and making quick puff pastry cases instead of topping a pie dish is a great time saver. Both the casserole and pastry cases can be frozen for up to 1 month. Allow the casserole to defrost then simmer in a pan for 2025 mins until thoroughly reheated. The pastry cases can be heated from frozen in a moderate oven for 10-15 mins.

Serves 4 - Ready in 2½ hrs

Quick and Easy Steak and Mushroom Pies 3 tbsp oil 1 large onion, peeled and sliced 750g (1lb 10oz) lean braising steak 1 tbsp seasoned our 600ml (1pt) hot beef stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 bay leaf 150g (5oz) button mushrooms, wiped and halved 225g (8oz) puff pastry Beaten egg to glaze

1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the braising steak, in batches, over a high heat until browned. Transfer to a casserole dish. 2. Add the onion to the pan and fry for 5-6 mins then stir in the flour and cook for a further minute. Pour in the stock and Worcestershire sauce and bring to the boil then pour over the beef. Add the bay leaf and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the oven for 1 1/2 hrs. 3. Heat the rest of the oil in a clean frying pan and fry the mushrooms for 1-2 mins until browned. Add to the casserole and cook for a further 20-30 mins until the meat is tender. 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut out 4 x 13cm (5in) rounds. Place on a baking sheet; glaze with beaten egg and use the tip of a knife to lightly score a crisscross pattern. 5. When the casserole is cooked remove from the oven and increase the oven temperature to 220C, 425F, Gas 7. Bake the pastry rounds for 10-15 mins until risen and golden. Split open each pastry round; spoon some of the casserole over the base and top with a pastry lid.

Thought for the Month

From a distance.... What has love got to do with it? Do you ever find yourself singing along to a song on the radio? I do; and usually I am either singing the wrong words, or ‘tum te tumming’ along when I can’t guess the words. But occasionally I get the lyrics right, and then I have a different problem…sometimes I don’t agree with the message in the song, but find myself singing along because of the catchy melody. For example, beloved and I like Bette Midler as a performer; but I find myself reluctantly mumbling along to her famous song ‘From a distance’, you will recognise the catchy chorus “And God is watching us, God is watching us,God is watching us from a distance.” See, the way I understand it, 2000 years ago God said “Enough! I am going in alongside them”. From that point on everything changed, even the worldwide date system became BC/AD to remind us of the incredible appearance of God. His arrival caused stars to move; Foreign Kings to come and investigate; the ‘local king’ to try and kill him; Skies to fill with choirs of Angels; shepherds to leave to leave their flocks … only to be ‘God Gob smacked’ to find a peasant unmarried teenage

virgin, in a very smelly stable wrapping this new born human version of God in some rags …what a strange sight it must have been. God was finally with us, (that’s why we call Jesus ‘Emmanuel’ - it means ‘God with us’) and after 33 amazing years walking with his friends, family and followers he said ‘I will be with you always’ to remind us that 2000 years later we can still call him Emmanuel – God very close, not at a distance. I hope you have yourselves a very merry Christmas; get some time to be close to those you want to be close to; and maybe sense the comforting ‘smile of God’ close to you, not at a distance.

Aber Valley Heritage Group

On the same day we heard the joyous news that Los 33, the trapped Chilean miners, had been successfully rescued it seemed particularly poignant for the Aber Valley Heritage group to be holding our annual Memorial Service to the 440 men and boys who perished in the Universal Colliery explosion at 8.10am on the 14th October 1913. Unfortunately, for the relatives of the Senghenydd men and boys there was to be no happy ending. The huge blast, heard 11 miles away in Cardiff and the resulting fire trapped the men on the west side from any means of escape. The hillsides were black with people, as upon hearing the news thousands of people descended on the village of Senghenydd. Relatives kept a long weary vigil at the pit head hoping that there would be some good news. Miraculously, there was to be some, with the unexpected announcement on the second day that rescuers had managed to bring up 18 survivors, 22 hours after the explosion. This group included a father and his two sons.

Cruelly, although hopes of further rescues had been raised there were to be no more. Of those who died 10 were 16 years old, 5 were 15 years old and 8 boys were just 14 years of age. Two households lost 3 brothers and another saw a father and two sons all perish.

This small valley was the scene of hundreds of funerals, the recovery of bodies going on for many weeks. The sudden death of so many breadwinners left a legacy of poverty, families left dependant on what relief funds they received. Therefore, although the community of course rejoices at the news from Chile, the residents of the Aber Valley know that the Universal Colliery disaster must live on in the memory through this annual Memorial Service. As the Centenary for the 1913 explosion approaches our committee are working hard to ensure this dreadful loss of life is never forgotten. It is hoped that funding may be secured to create a suitable lasting Memorial, which incorporates the name and age of each soul who met his untimely death on the 14th October 1913.

If you would like to know more about the Universal Colliery disaster please come and visit our voluntary run Heritage Museum based within Senghenydd Community Centre, Gwern Avenue, Senghenydd. We are open (free admission) from 11am until 2pm Monday to Saturday (except Bank Holidays).

Goods Crafted with True Peruvian Spirit Joanne & Kali have recently opened a new store in Clive Street, Caerphilly, specialising in hand crafted genuine Peruvian goods. They buy directly from the craftspeople who make the products in Peru. Joanne & Kali’s goal is to be able to help the poorest local communities. Everything comes directly from Peru where sales are helping support local communities. The store sells beautiful products including exclusive clothing designs, hats, scarves, bags, gloves. The artwork is inspired from such spiritual places as Machu Picchu, and Peruvian folklore, with colours so vibrant it’s as if the painting is alive… can you spot the man in the mountain? All the jewellery is hand made using only the highest quality silver, and a wide range of semi-precious stones using unique and original designs. The rugs are made from Alpaca which truly has to be felt to be believed – it is soooo soft and luxurious!!! The depth of the rug in the photo is real. To celebrate the opening of the store, and to coincide with the Caerphilly Christmas Fayre, we are hosting a special grand late night opening on 9th Dec.
