Our machines are fixed into the vehicles, they run on fuel & have their own water tank, similar to a fire engine, we simply run 2 pipes into your home, the 1st pipe is similar to a jet-wash which sprays our 100% safe detergent solutions into the carpet, the second pipe disperses steam at 240 degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to kill germs, bacteria & all carpet bugs which then gets extracted into our on board waste tank. This process is the best; most thorough clean you can have for your home

Beauty Tips Hi all,
Page 16
February was a great month for me as I got the chance to whizz around and meet a lot of new people in Caerphilly.
Technology | DIY Gadgets
It all started earlier in the month when I took part in a Caerphilly Business Forum event designed to bring existing businesses together with start-up companies. It was a fun evening and as an exhibitor, I was pleased to find out that many of the attendees heard about the event through My Local View - how cool is that.

Equally inspiring was the chance to meet up with other established companies at a “Business for Breakfast” meeting at the Crossways pub and despite the doom and gloom in the media, I walked away with the impression that everyone was optimistic about the future success of their enterprises.

Hollys Ball
My name is Holly. In 2009, I was diagnosed with a form of Autism called High Functioning Autism. Over the past few years I have had a very difficult time including being bullied quite a lot because I am different. Autism means that I see the world in a different way but it’s not a wrong way. Autism can affects the way we understand and relate to other people. Taking part in everyday family and social life can be harder for people touched with Autism. Other people appear to know how to communicate and interact with each other naturally, people with Autism may find this difficult. There are over half a million people in the UK with autism, that’s around 1 in 100 people. People from all nationalities, cultural, religious and social backgrounds can have autism. It appears to affect more men than women. It is a lifelong condition: children with autism grow up to become adults with autism. World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated every year on the 2nd of April.
This year together with my Mum, Autism Cymru, The National Autistic Society Cymru and Real Radio, we have organised Holly’s Ball which is being held at the Millennium Stadium on the 2nd of April. We will be raising money for Autism Cymru and The National Autistic Society. For more information please visit my website www.hollysball.co.uk

Tesco Fundraising Success!
It’s hard to believe that our year at Tesco Crossways fundraising for Clic Sargent is almost at an end. It seems like yesterday we were excitedly announcing its launch! We have done some wild and wacky things to fundraise, from dressing up days to competitions to cake and book sales. We swam in icy seas and held hula hoop competitions. We have been supported by local groups and organisations to whom we are extremely grateful, and have been again stunned by the generosity of our customers and staff.
It is my huge pleasure to say that we have achieved and indeed surpassed our target of £3000 this year, and the exact figure will be displayed on our community board shortly. I look forward to announcing our new charity of the year for 2011/2011, and know that once again with the commitment and support of our community we can achieve great things! Thank You! K ath Dawson

Running out of space at home?
STUFF IT
by Katherine Sorrell With the approach of spring comes the irresistible urge to sort out our storage. Katherine Sorrell offers some options to help even the untidiest of households become a haven of clutter-free simplicity. Good storage is truly life-enhancing – it will make your home more spacious and attractive and, while you’ll still have to make the effort to put things away, it will be a darn sight quicker and easier to do. It’s easily said, but absolutely true, that you can never have too much storage; in real life, a good aim is for about 10-20% of each room (give or take, depending on the room) to be given over to storage of some type or another. The two chief options when it comes to storage are tailor-made and built-in, or offthe-peg, free-standing pieces. The former is Elfa’s set of two birch-faced shelves and a rail are height-adjustable and often neater, takes up less room and is ideal hang from a top track that requires just three or four screws to install. It can be fitted either in an open hallway or in a generously sized cupboard, and for awkward spaces, but can be costly and costs £204. (A Place for Everything, can’t be taken with you when you move. The 0870 224 2660; aplaceforeverything.co.uk) latter is portable and (often) less expensive, but tends to be bulky and must be chosen with It’s all out there, and you simply need to decide care to co-ordinate with other furnishings. on a budget and consider which options work best Built-in storage can be fitted into any suitable alcove, such as either side of a chimney breast or beneath a bay window, or could stretch from wall to wall. It may take the form of open shelves, cupboards, drawers or whatever you design to suit your needs. To keep the costs down, use inexpensive materials such as pine, chipboard or medium density fibreboard, and finish with primer, undercoat and eggshell paint.
for you.
Ten golden rules of storage Don’t store items you no longer need. Regularly assess what’s vital to your life and, if something’s not, sell it or give it away. Freecycle is a global organisation dedicating to keeping good stuff out of landfill – sign up to your local group at www. freecycle.org and you’re likely to find a taker for most things.
Large, free-standing storage is available at prices to suit every budget, from high-street bookcases to antique Oriental chests to modern designer Possessions that are used only occasionally sideboards. If a cheap piece is the right size and (Christmas decorations, ski equipment) can be shape, you can often hide an ugly veneer with stored in attics, basements, sheds or the backs a coat of suitable paint, while second-hand finds or tops of cupboards, reserving easily accessible can be transformed by stripping, painting and storage space for the stuff you need to get at all changing pulls, knobs or handles. Then there are the time. the smaller pieces – boxes and baskets to tidy awkwardly shaped stuff that won’t fit anywhere Don’t place heavy items higher than shoulder else; hooks and hanging rails; and specialist items height or lower than knee height. such as toy tidies for the bath, sock organisers or jewellery rolls. Deadline for our April issue: Wednesday 23rd March 2011 - Please book early!
11 Stacking boxes look great and save space – but if you need to get at the contents quickly and easily, don’t put them in the bottom boxes. And underbed boxes work far better if they’re on wheels. Don’t be afraid to adapt storage that was originally designed for other uses. Plan chests, lockers, hanging racks and so on can be bought at officesupply companies, shop display outlets or secondhand shops. And multi-functional furnishings are great: dining or coffee tables with drawers, beds with deep drawers, bench seats with lifting lids; even some basins and baths now have slim drawers or cupboards built-in. Use every inch of space by building storage above doors and windows, high up on walls, in alcoves, under sloping ceilings and beneath bay windows. You can even fit shelves or cupboards into disused fireplaces, while wall racks or ceiling pulleys can be used for bikes or similar items.
doors fitted or, at least, put things into attractive, matching boxes or baskets (labelled if necessary) on the shelves. Store small things in small containers (Lego, toy soldiers, beads) and large things in larger containers. It really works. If things keep ending up in the wrong place, consider whether it’s your family being untidy or the fact that the stuff would be better stored elsewhere. It might be a good idea, for example, to keep toys in a cupboard in a kitchen rather than upstairs in a child’s bedroom. Finally, plan storage with military precision – it’s tedious but really worth spending a couple of hours adding up exactly what’s going to go inside each space and how much room it will take up.
Avoid open-shelf storage anywhere visible unless you’re totally confident in your ability (and that of the rest of your family) to keep what’s kept on them tidy and dust-free. If not, have cupboard

Getting Spicy Spice of Life - Coriander The coriander plant - Coriandrum sativum produces both a spice and a herb. The seeds are classified as a spice while the leaves are the herb. Each has distinctly different bouquets and flavours. Coriander seeds are sweet, mild, warm and aromatic, while the leaves are like Marmite™ - you either love or loathe them! Some people find the scent revolting and the taste is far more pungent than the seeds. Seeds are sold dried and are available whole or ready ground. Whole seeds are preferable as they keep indefinitely and are very easy to grind at home. Leaves should always be used fresh in a similar way to parsley, although they can be frozen by chopping and freezing in ice cubes. Coriander seed is most commonly used in curry powders, stews and soups. It’s also included in traditional British black pudding recipes. Recent medical studies have supported coriander’s ancient usage as a digestive aid. A weak coriander tisane is safe to give to colicky babies under the age of two and is apparently effective at relieving their pain. Other studies suggest that coriander has anti-inflammatory effects so the essential oil of coriander may be helpful for applying to arthritic joints.

Beauty Tips Eyelashes Great eyelashes will really accentuate your eyes and give you a wide-awake look. Although not all ladies are blessed with long, thick eyelashes, there are many options available to give either a completely natural look or obviously emphasised eyes. The most immediate but shortest lasting choice is to use mascara. There are numerous options offering lash lengthening and thickening. Buying a good brand and taking the time to apply a couple of coats will really pay dividends. If your eyelashes are fair, it is very difficult with mascara to colour right down to the eyelid so you should opt to have your eyelashes dyed which will naturally appear to lengthen your lashes too. You can do it at home but the results will be far better if you ask a professional and it’s an inexpensive salon treatment which lasts for several weeks. False eyelashes are commonplace in the world of celebrities, and ranges are available from a naturally enhanced look through to over-the-top and even obviously false using colours, jewels or feathers. They are best for a special occasion though rather than for regular daily use. If you love the effect of ‘falsies’ but want something longer lasting and more practical, then consider semi-permanent eyelash extensions. These are applied a lash at a time and are tailored to suit you. They will look and feel completely natural and although you don’t really need mascara too, you can still apply a little to the end of your lashes for extra emphasis. They will last around 8 to 12 weeks, although an ‘infill’ is recommended after 3 to 4 weeks.

We will hopefully see the last of the cold damp mornings and welcome some brighter and milder weather. Bring it on … PLEASE! Although we are already very busy preparing applications and documents for the forthcoming events, the last month has been a time to reflect on the previous years events. Looking at feedback and analysing what we can do to improve on our events for the forthcoming year. Now we are back in the swing of it and things are really moving forward for us this year. Maybe a bit delayed compared to others…. but we are now on Twitter! Already seeing an increase in followers on a daily basis, we are really looking forward to utilising this tool as a means of communicating with you guys. Yes, we have been selected to help manage and deliver this high profile event. Watch this space and our twitter site for updates on the line up, which will hopefully be announced around April time. 2011 looks to be yet another exciting year for us, with new events such as the Proms in the Park, and our old favorites including the Big Cheese, Flower Festival and the Christmas programme of events. Believe it or not we are already thinking of the Christmas festivities as we start taking bookings for stalls and activities!
Don’t forget its not just the events team that organise events for the County Borough, all our visitor attractions are working hard to deliver events throughout the year, including weekends, half terms and summer holidays. Many local community groups and volunteers also provide the County Borough with an array of events and activities throughout the year. For infomation on all the events that we are currently aware of visit www. caerphilly.gov.uk/events Whilst you’re on the move keep your eyes peeled for our Spring/Summer Events Guide, which should now be in a shop or outlet near you. DIY Goes Digital
How robots, lasers and gadgets can take the drudgery out of DIY When we were little, we thought that by the time we grew up we’d have robots and lasers. We were right, but the lasers and robots aren’t where we thought they would be. Instead of frying our enemies we’re using them to hang pictures, vacuum the dining room and mow the lawn. Today, even our tools are becoming high-tech.
Getting it Straight Your local DIY emporium probably has more lasers than Darth Vader’s Death Star. There are laser spirit levels, laser range finders, laser tape measures and there are even jigsaws that use lasers to show you where to cut. If you’d rather not spend more than £20 on a spirit level, why not install one on your phone? The free iHandy Carpenter Level for Apple’s iPhone uses your phone’s built-in gyroscope to tell you whether something’s flat. It isn’t as accurate as a real spirit level, but if you only need a quick guide then you can’t argue with free. Don’t have an iPhone? Spirit Level Pro does the same thing on Google-powered Android phones such as the HTC Desire.
Paint With Ease You wouldn’t expect paint companies to make gadgets, but they do: Dulux has the PaintPod, and Hammerite has the MetalMaster. Both promise to make DIY easier. The £69 PaintPod is a closed system that sends just enough paint to the integrated roller, and it automatically cleans itself when you’re finished. It works fairly well and vastly reduces the mess most of us make when we’re repainting the house. Hammerite’s MetalMaster isn’t so successful. It’s an electrostatic paint gun that costs around £50 and promises to take the drudgery out of painting metal such as furniture, railings and so on. However, a quick scan of review sites such as reviewcentre.com paints a fairly sad picture, with customers complaining that it takes longer than a paintbrush and isn’t particularly well made.
DIY all in one If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you crossed a toolbox and a transformer, the Power8 Workshop is the answer: its lurid lime green case transforms into a work bench and includes halogen lighting, a drill, a screwdriver, a circular saw and a jigsaw. There’s also an integrated fast charger to keep the tools’ batteries topped up. At £289.90 it’s on the pricey side, but there’s no doubt it offers convenience, easy transportation and easy storage for your stuff. Fancy something even smaller? Leatherman’s innovative multi-tools are in toolboxes, glove boxes and suitcases around the planet, and the range starts at around £30 for the smaller models. If money’s no object the £99 Charge TTi combines stainless steel blades with titanium handles, and it feels sharp enough to split atoms. It cuts, clips, strips, saws, screws, crimps and files, and yet the whole thing is small enough to fit in a trouser pocket.
robot Home Help The trouble with multi-tools is that they still expect you to do the work. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get robots to do the DIY for you? We’re not quite there yet, but there are plenty of robots to help around the house. Robot vacuum cleaners such as iRobot’s Roomba and Samsung’s Navibot have dropped below the £400 mark - although like Daleks, they don’t do stairs and if you really don’t like mowing the lawn Husquvarna’s robot lawnmower, the Automower, starts at around £1,099.

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly
Some regions lose, others gain The other week I visited Rotherham in South Yorkshire. The purpose of my visit was to meet local Government leaders to discuss how European grants were being spent. Unfortunately, the message I was given was not a positive one. I was told that as much as £40 million in European grants are likely to be lost to the South Yorkshire region because of a lack of ‘match funding’ due to Government cuts. According to rules which have been agreed by the British Government, European Structural Fund Grants for areas like South Wales and South Yorkshire have to be matched ‘pound for pound’ before they can be used. The problem that Rotherham Council has is that the Government has taken away the money the Council was going to use for match funding.
This is because under the rebate mechanism, negotiated by Mrs Thatcher when she was Prime Minister, a large proportion of the money allocated to Britain goes to the Treasury if that money is not ‘drawn down’ by the body it was originally allocated to. In Wales, we do not have this problem. West Wales and the Valleys have received, and continue to receive large amounts of European funding. Jeff Cuthbert, our Caerphilly AM, Chairs the important Committee which oversees how the money is spent.
This means that not only is the area suffering from Government cut-backs, it is also losing out because it cannot ‘draw down’ the grants from Europe which it had been allocated. This ‘double-whammy’ is obviously of great concern to the Council and is a big issue in the area.
Because match funding is provided by the Welsh Assembly Government, there is no problem with the money from Europe not being claimed. Furthermore the money is all put to good use as well. Yet another reason for Devolution!
To make matters worse, I was told that central Government is able to claim the money from Brussels which should have gone to South Yorkshire.
Wayne David, MP for Caerphilly

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery
Beet that! I seem to be your local source of plant trivia, and proud of it too. This weeks’ useless bit of info comes from the British Garden Trade bestsellers top 50 (yes we gardeners have our charts too) which tells us that Beetroot seeds are currently the top selling packet seeds … gripping stuff eh – if any of you are getting over excited, please go and sit down for a minute and breath slowly…and relax. Actually – relaxation is part of the reason that Beetroot has become so popular. Beetroot is now seen as a ‘Superfood’ – which actually may be news to us, but apparently the Romans had already worked this out 2000 years ago, and highly prized Beetroot for its cooking and health qualities (did you know that the Romans had their equivalent to Jamie Oliver?
Yep, a chap called Apicius wrote a Roman bestseller called ‘The art of cooking’, but alas he never made it on to tv). So, it can reduce blood pressure (I’ll have 2 then), help you relax, has aphrodisiac qualities (whatever that means?), high in antioxidants, folic acid, and iron. If that wasn’t all, it can also help combat Liver problems, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Osteoporosis. And, it tastes good too; both the root – which can be served hot or cold – and the leaves which can be mixed in with a leaf salad.
So how much do they cost? Well on average a packet of 200 seeds will cost about £2.OO…I make that about 1 penny each – I am beginning to understand why they are a best seller, how about you? I have yet another bit of good news for you, because I am in a good mood this month, you don’t even need to have a garden to grow some beetroot. You can grow them on your doorstep in some decent sized pots (at least 30 cms across and 30cms deep) the leaves are really attractive – so it is ornamental as well as tasty. Come on Caerphilly - let’s keep Beetroot at the top of the charts!

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly
“The National Assembly will, for the first time in its short history, be formally dissolved on 31 March. From that date and until 6 May there will be no Assembly Members. Those of us standing for re-election (like me) will be known as Former Assembly Members for the duration of the five week campaign. But my Office is able to remain open during the dissolution period in order to deal with existing cases. So if you’re one of the many being helped at the moment, or if you contact me before the end of March for help, then that help will continue and my Office can be contacted as normal. My contact details are shown below.
engagement with local people is very gratifying. We extend an invitation to anyone that’s interested in become a “Friend” of the project to contact me for more details. Please look at our web-site (www. caerphillymcc.weebly.com) for information about our activities.
In earlier editions of “Local View” I’ve told you about my work with the Group that’s trying to save the original building (“The Beeches”) of the Miners’ Hospital for community use. So I would like to update you.
By the time that this article is read we will know the outcome of the Referendum on powers for the Assembly. I hope that people have voted yes because it will mean that we’re able to pass Laws (or “Measures”), that affect Wales only, far faster than we can now. But if it’s been a “no” vote then it means that the current arrangements continue. So it’s important to remain in touch with your Assembly Member regardless of the result.
The “Group” has now formalised itself into a Company Limited by Guarantee and soon we’ll become a Registered Charity. This should enable us to move towards taking control of The Beeches through our arrangement with United Welsh Housing. Although nothing is formally resolved I’m optimistic about achieving a successful outcome. Ideas continue to arrive from interested voluntary groups and individuals about future uses of The Beeches once it ceases to be part of a hospital following the opening of Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr. Health Watch
Back Pain Back pain is a debilitating condition which is said to affect seven out of ten adults at some point in their lives. It’s often difficult for the individual to say exactly what caused the problem. However typical triggers include • standing, sitting or bending down for long periods • lifting, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy • bending from your back instead of your knees and hips • falling or tripping up • stress or anxiety meaning your muscles are tense • being overweight • generally having poor posture More serious back conditions may be unrelated to any of these factors however. A slipped disc, osteoporosis or a fracture are extremely painful and will need medical attention, but are fortunately quite rare. Although you might recognise the cause of your
C
back pain and resolve to avoid the triggers in the future, in the short term relief will be the highest priority. The first thing to remember is that bed rest can actually aggravate low back pain, so only go to bed in order to sleep. You should stay active and continue your daily routine as normally as you can. Relief can often be gained by applying hot or cold packs, or using an over-the-counter gel that contains pain relief or has anti-inflammatory properties. A normal painkiller (aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen) will also be very effective so do take these as often as recommended. Finally, although on-going severe pain will need a visit to your GP, if your back or neck problem has occurred as a result of a strain or a bad sleeping position, many physiotherapists will be able to see you the same day and will be able to offer advice to prevent a reoccurrence of the problem.

Tongue in Cheek - Working from Home
Cat and Dog
by Ted Bruning
In the eighth century, an Irish monk living in Reichenau Abbey in southern Germany wrote a charming poem – in Gaelic: that’s how we know he was Irish – about watching his cat hunting mice. “I and Pangur Ban, my cat, ‘Tis like tasks that we are at. Hunting mice is his delight; Hunting words I sit all night... “When a mouse darts from its den, O how glad is Pangur then!” The anonymous monk and I have this in common: we are both watching our pets when we should be working. However while he was watching his cat hunting mice, I am distracted by my cat being hunted by the dog. The cat, Peepo, is 10 and was already in full possession of the house when Flossie arrived as a puppy four years ago. An excitable LabradorSpringer cross, Flossie had never met a cat before and immediately decided that Peepo was some sort of demon who had to be kept away from the humans at all costs. Their first few days under the same roof were one long scuffle, but in the old house it was easy to keep them apart. Flossie’s domain was the sitting room, conservatory, and garden, while Peepo retired to a solitary life upstairs. He could no longer join us for an evening in front of the telly, but at least he could get to the kitchen for food and water without risk of being ambushed. The new house, alas, is more or less openplan. Flossie can get upstairs unhindered, while Peepo’s passage to the kitchen is unsecured. When we first moved in we feared carnage; but things didn’t turn out quite as we had expected. The truth is that Flossie is absolutely terrified of Peepo. But as the faithful guardian of her pack, she does her best to overcome her fear. When one of us goes upstairs she’ll come too; as soon as we’ve done whatever it is we went upstairs to do she hurls herself down again as fast as she can, clearing the steep staircase in a semicontrolled tumble.
Peepo, on the other hand, has decided that he’s not at all afraid of Flossie. He stalks about the place as if she wasn’t there, nose and tail haughtily in the air, looking neither to the left nor to the right. If Flossie dares to come too close he’ll turn round and swear sharply at her, upon which she immediately flees; but that’s as far as Peepo goes in even acknowledging her existence. Recently there has been a development. Peepo has decided to reassert his right to evenings with the family; and while Flossie is asleep at her end of the sofa he’ll wander casually into the sitting room and exchange courtly greetings with the humans. If Flossie wakes up she’s a picture of bristling alertness, hackles up and every muscle pumped, ready to confront the cat-devil should it show any signs of ill intent. Sometimes she even has to be held back; but we know that even if she went for Peepo it would all be a sham, because she never gets any closer to him than she feels she has to. She certainly looks the part of dutiful guard-dog, but it’s all a pantomime and blows have never actually been exchanged. Will they ever get used to each other and cohabit peacefully? I don’t know. I do know this, though: I should stop watching them at it and get on with some work!

Loft Conversions
ZAC ZAC
With the housing market so depressed at the moment, moving house can be an even more expensive and stressful experience than it usually is. Converting your loft into an extra room is a cost effective and practical way of creating extra space for you as well as adding value to your home when you do move. This is not a job to be undertaken lightly though. Apart from the cost - around £20,000 upwards - building regulations need to be adhered to and sometimes planning permission is required. Conversion can take time and involves a lot of upheaval. The extra room needs to be reported to your insurance company as it may affect your premium. Also you need to store all the stuff that’s currently residing in your attic! But once that’s all done, you’ll have a fabulous new room. Time of Year - March
“Spring is here; spring is here! Life is skittles, and life is beer. I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring. I do. Don’t you? ‘Course you do!” So sang the great American humourist Tom Lehrer, echoing what many of us feel in March as hedgerows sprout a pale green fuzz of new foliage, daffodils blow their golden trumpets in gardens and verges, and various mammalian species feel the first stirrings of the reproductive urge. As a young man in Montgomeryshire this was the time of year when I loved to wander the fields, lonely as the proverbial cloud, watching the earth slowly coming back to life. My favourite sight in those days was to see hares rearing up on their hind legs, scrapping away furiously like furry little Thai boxers; I used to think these combats were between competitive males, but I now learn that the fights are actually between does who aren’t yet ready to mate and jacks who most decidedly are. So like the discos of my student years! The sense of newness prompted by all this rising sap was once officially reflected in the turning pages of the calendar. The Romans regarded the year as starting on the Kalends (or first) of March until 46BC when Julius Caesar introduced the new Julian calendar, which counted the year from the January Kalends. Christianity, however, spread from the Eastern Mediterranean where the Julian calendar had never really caught on, and after the fall of the Western Empire in the fifth century the computation of the New Year gradually reverted to the spring and, in particular, the Feast of the Annunciation, or Lady Day, or 25th March. I don’t know about you, but I much prefer the idea that the year starts in spring. Because it does, really, doesn’t it? Nothing actually changes on 1st January, and it seems to me to be a terribly arbitrary and artificial date to mark something as important as casting off the old and welcoming the new. Catkins and crocuses and lambs are much more tangible, and quite literally organic, indicators of renewal: why not set our calendars by them, rather than by the decrees of Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory? For it was the latter gentleman who, in 1582, recognised the deficiencies of the Julian calendar and introduced its far more accurate Gregorian successor, which is actually only 26 seconds out. Pope Gregory didn’t actually invent it himself – he was a theologian, not a mathematician – but merely gave official sanction to a timetable many people were already using.
Scotland, rather oddly for a country whose Reformation had been so thorough, took to this Papist innovation as early as 1600; in England and Wales the year was counted from 25th March until 1752, when we finally and rather reluctantly standardised on the Gregorian calendar. This is why the date of the execution of Charles Iwas recorded, at the time, as January 1648 but we regard as having been January 1649; and indeed why the date of the Calendar Act, which introduced the change, is variously given as 1750 and 1751. Not everything changed, though: bankers and businessmen continued and continue to regard Lady Day as the beginning of their year; and I too continue to regard late March as being the true turn of the year and the correct time for making resolutions, decisions, and changes: a principle which also governed the date of my marriage – 31st March, 22 years ago. Anniversary presents to my Swiss bank account, please.

Did you know that from October you will be charged for a bag wherever you shop in Wales? The charge From 1 October 2011 you will pay at least 5p for a bag wherever you shop in Wales. It will apply in all shops including clothes stores, take away food outlets and restaurants, corner shops and market stalls. It will also apply when you have goods delivered in Wales, such as dot.com groceries. You will be charged for every bag you use. So if you want to avoid paying, make sure you carry your own bags with you whenever you go shopping.
Types of bags included in the charge The charge includes bags made of plastic, paper and degradable material. Only bags used in certain circumstances, such as ones used for unpackaged food like meat, vegetables or poultry are exempt from the charge. Bags used to carry free prescriptions in Wales or other items which are supplied free on the NHS are also not included in the charge. Any bags that are intended to be reused for example ‘bags for life’ and those made from cloth, jute, or cotton are not included in the charge.
Reasons for the charge During 2009 in Wales we took home an estimated 350 million carrier bags from the major supermarkets alone. Bags are bad for the environment, create litter and harm wildlife. The Assembly Government is introducing the charge to drastically reduce the number of bags we use in Wales. Remember: you can avoid the charge by taking your bags with you when you go shopping.

Thought for the Month
The fun of giving.... I heard a couple of stories recently both with a similar theme on having some fun with generosity. One chap who lives in Scotland, used to take great joy every time he drove over the Forth road bridge by paying for the car behind as well as his own at the toll. He would smile to himself as he watched the surprise unfold at the toll in his rear view mirror as he drove off into the sunset. On a larger scale, I heard of some church members who really wanted to do something to affect the ‘economic atmosphere’ in their town. So, in the local restaurant as they paid for their meal they asked to pay the bill for the table next to theirs too. They didn’t know those lucky people, but what a surprise the unsuspecting diners must have had when they went to pay their bill…! So, guess what happened…? More people started doing the same thing, and as more people received this unexpected generosity – the whole thing snowballed, like a really good virus.
thing had gone a bit mad – as people were paying for each others’ bills, and his staff were struggling to keep track of who had paid for what! It seems that to some degree, this so called recession started when the media told us that that things were going down the pan, so we stopped spending … and lo verily, we started going down the pan. Now that may be a very simplistic economic report … (OK it definitely is), but it seems to me that the more we try to cut spending and save money the less goes into the ‘community pot’. Whereas spending and giving generously where we can, is one of the basic functions of money – that’s what it is for… pass it on! Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net
One day they went back to the restaurant, and the owner came up and laughingly said that the whole

The Legal Eagle - Divorce
Divorce for anyone can be quite an upsetting time, not to mention if you are in the public eye. As of most recently readers would have seen in the news headlines comments and constant updates with regards to Katie Price and the alleged separation and likely divorce from her current husband, and the question that is raised is how quickly can you get a divorce?
Your solicitor may want to talk to you about drawing up a Separation Agreement, or issuing Judicial Separation proceedings.
Under current legislation any party to a marriage must wait for the first anniversary to have elapsed before issuing a Divorce Petition. Before the 12 months, marriages can be annulled, but that it is only in unusual circumstances.
Within those twelve months financial matters can alter greatly and it is therefore imperative that the appropriate mechanisms are in place to protect your financial position.
If you find yourself in a position that you have separated from your marital partner before the anniversary of your marriage, then you may want to seek legal advice so as to protect your position.
Either way if you find yourself in that position, you want to ensure that you are fully prepared and in readiness for the anniversary of your marriage.

Business News - Networking Success
Business for Breakfast, one of the UK’s leading and most successful networking organisations, is celebrating two years in Caerphilly. Business for Breakfast, one of the UK’s leading and most successful networking organisations, is celebrating two years in Caerphilly. The networking forum helps SME’s in the area to beat the recession by meeting regularly and getting to Know, Like and Trust fellow members in order to refer business leads and to share contacts etc. The group meets at The Crossways Restaurant, Pontypandy every other Tuesday morning from 06.45 where guests and members enjoy a fantastic breakfast before having the opportunity to tell the group about their businesses, listen to Business Spotlights from fellow members, get the chance to give and receive business leads as well as having time to chat informally with fellow business members and guests.
It is a well known fact that a business referral generates 80% more results than a cold call and that approximately 70% of all jobs are found through networking. In today’s economic climate, pooling contacts and business intelligence through business networking has never been so important and is an extremely cost-effective method of marketing.
Regional Director Merv Smith says; “Many businesses are looking at cost-saving initiatives and now is the perfect time to evaluate the marketing budget and activities and assess what is working. Networking is a marketing element which is, and will continue to be, an invaluable way to attract new clients, suppliers and make strategic alliances. By working with other business, it also provides the most cost effective, route to many markets.” BforB always welcomes new guests along to see for themselves, how the group works and to experience first hand what BforB can do for them. A £10 cost is required to cover breakfast, refreshments and room hire etc and all guests are asked to bring along their business cards. Business for Breakfast groups operate on a first come–first served basis and once a business discipline is registered and accepted for membership, nobody else with that discipline can become a member in that group.
Our next meeting is Tuesday March 8th and local businesses are invited to contact the Executive team to make sure that their business discipline is available before being invited to attend and to sample the way Business for Breakfast works.
For further information on Business for Breakfast membership, please visit the website at www.bforb.com For further information on the new group or to book your attendance at the next event, please contact Merv Smith on 07960 698417 or email: merv@bforb.co.uk
