Hi all,
Fun Quiz
Welcome to the Sept edition of Local View.
Page 22
It’s quite amusing when I am introduced to people when I am out and about.
What’s on in Caerphilly Pages 24, 50+52
“This is Paul from Local View” is the standard introduction normally as nobody seems to know my surname. It typically provokes one of three reactions.
Neighbourhood Policing Page 30
Reaction one - Readers - generally say something nice about the magazine, an article they have enjoyed or advertiser they have engaged.
Wayne David MP Page 36
Reaction two - business owners - look of fear and a gripping of the wallet as if I am likely to launch into a well rehearsed monologue about how marvellous the mag is and how I can literally transform their business, local profile and love lives!
Dr. Roger’s Gardening Column Page 38
Reaction three - “what’s Local View?”
Recipe | Plum & Almond Tart
If you come across a number three please let them know the magazine is available on our website www.mylocalview.co.uk. As well as our great local businesses, there is also a great opportunity to join in with local events.

Working from home Next door’s parcels
It’s a hangover from the days when most households had one spouse who went out to work while the other – the one who did the really hard labour – was at home most of the time that parcels are generally delivered during the day. It follows that nowadays, when most couples both have to work to pay the mortgage, deliveries are generally made when no-one is in. Logically, Parcelforce and DHL and FedEx and whoever ought to do their rounds in the evening, when there’s likely to be somebody at home to sign for whatever it is they’re delivering. But they don’t seem to have got their heads round this obvious truth yet; so the duties of every workerfrom-home include acting as neighbourhood delivery depot. This never used to be a big deal – in fact, it was a positive pleasure to be able to do a little favour for a neighbour, especially one that involves so little time and effort. Answer door, sign docket, leave package in hallway until neighbour comes to collect. In return, huge moral leverage. So when the neighbour storms round to complain apoplectically about the son and heir’s electric guitar, a hurt look and a wounded tone are all it takes to defuse the situation. But lately, what with that there interweb shopping and all, the volume of home traffic has soared. The net has turned into a global shopping mall, and vans laden with everything from smoked eels to flatpack furniture clog up our little street throughout the day. It seems to be a case of “Recession? What recession?” for my neighbours, whose houses must be absolutely stuffed with brand-new consumer goods of all shapes, sizes, and descriptions. They all work hard to pay for it all, mind, because they’re never at home; and I seem to spend half my day standing at the front door trying to scribble something that looks vaguely like my signature on one of those electronic notepads while the van driver stands there fretting impatiently as if I was wasting his time! Some days my hallway looks like a warehouse, and I have to fight hard to resist the temptation to tease loose a corner of each parcel to see what’s inside. Especially the ones in plain wrappers. Whatever has that homely-looking woman from just down the street ordered this time? And why does she always look so shifty when she comes round in the evening to collect? Unbidden and unwanted mental pictures form...
make an ecologist weep. I suppose that in order to protect all these fragile goodies in transit, they have to be swaddled in enough bubblewrap and cardboard to make them virtually bomb-proof. But given that most of the electrical goods you buy these days are so shoddily constructed that they break within days anyway, going to such lengths to stop them getting scratched seems a bit of a forlorn effort to me. Anyway, I’m so fed up with acting as the street’s unpaid storeman that from now on I’m going to start charging a small fee. It might not make me popular, but hey – every street needs at least one cranky old curmudgeon, and from this day forth it’s going to be me. Ted Bruning

ZAC ZAC
Redecorating is the single most effective way to give your home a makeover. As well as refreshing your home, altering your colour scheme can boost your mood. Colours can make your rooms inviting, calming, stimulating or sophisticated, depending on your choices. When choosing your main colour, think about the atmosphere you want to create in a particular room. In general, light or cool tones give the impression of airy space while warm or dark shades make a room cosy and inviting. A monochromatic or ‘tonal’ scheme is easy on the eye, stylish and tranquil. This means you use a single colour, but in varying tones. A good balance is to choose three shades. Use the deepest tone near the floor and the lightest on the ceiling to make the room appear more spacious. This scheme can look a little bland, so use CAERPHILLY (029) 2080on7711 texture and patterns to lift the design. Putting wallpaper a signature wall is one option. Perhaps make one of the shades a more intense or deeper ZAC colour. Use splashes of a bright colour in soft furnishings, rugs, New are MOVING !!! but artWe or other accessories for only emphasis. 18 Hollywood Smiles Many of the glamour factors observed in the USA are becoming a way of life in the UK. One of these is a fascination with gleaming white teeth. If you’ve set your heart on a Hollywood smile, what’s the best way to go about getting one? Unless you have a fortune to spend on cosmetic dentistry, the best way to improve your smile is by whitening your teeth. Undergoing a tooth whitening course at the dentist should ensure that you achieve the desired bright smile without damaging the enamel surface of your teeth. This is not a ‘quick fix’ treatment as it will take between three and four weeks to complete. However, once the course has finished the ‘Hollywood Smile’ you are left with can last for up to three years.
Please call for a quote today
Do bear in mind that you cannot have this done on the NHS, so it’s essential to get an estimate before agreeing to any treatment. The downside Side effects vary from person to person, but your teeth may become sensitive to cold. Or you might experience some gum discomfort. However, these symptoms usually disappear within a few days of the final treatment. Do it yourself There are home whitening kits, but if you decide to go down this route, make sure whatever you buy carries British Dental Health Foundation approval. To simply remove minor surface stains, such as those caused by smoking or drinking tea, coffee, red wine and blackcurrant, there are many excellent toothpastes which will do the job.

Caerphilly events update
The calm after the storm… As I sit here in the office on my own while the Events team have a well earned rest; I will reflect on the summer events programme with the highlights (and lows!). The summer events are like a whirlwind of madness with so much to prepare and do. The guys here in the office do an incredible job putting in long days with an abundance of enthusiasm, commitment and care. This year’s Big Cheese, in its 13th year; was one of the most successful ever seen. Thousands of people flocked to Caerphilly over the three day event with many coaches bringing visitors from various parts of the UK. The sun shone for most of the weekend, which meant the site was busy on all three days. Many of the food and producers were completely sold out of stock by Sunday afternoon; with many reporting record sales, which even topped sales from a full week at The Royal Welsh Show. Our park & ride facility was well used with record numbers of cars at both sites.
drink
Our first Kite Night at Blackwood Showfields took place on Friday 20th August and what is it they say…? ‘The show must go on!’. Indeed it did and we soldiered on despite the pouring rain! The kites went up, the funfair opened and those who braved the dismal weather had a brilliant time. The night culminated with an illuminated kite show and superb fireworks display. Returning the next day (in waterproofs that were still damp from the night before!) we braved the rain once more for the Bedwellty & County Show’, which took place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd August. With livestock aplenty visitors enjoyed watching hunter ponies, Gelligaer hounds, Welsh mountain ponies, shires and falconry display. The highlight for me was the rabbit marquee with stunning breeds including the most enormous rabbit I have ever seen! The following day the sun shone and visitors descended on the very muddy, but at least dry(ish) field.
With showjumping, vintage tractor display and a day jam-packed with animal shows it was a fantastic family day out.
You could say that you never have a boring day working in the Events & Marketing department; no two days are ever the same and what’s more, no one can control the weather! So, to work here you need a good pair of wellies, bundles of enthusiasm, endless energy and most importantly a good sense of humour! Once the Event Team are back in the office plans will be underway for three Christmas Markets which kick off on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th December at Blackwood town centre; followed by Caerphilly’s Medieval Christmas Fair on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th December and Bargoed’s Christmas Fair & Lantern Parade on Saturday 18th December. We’ll bring you more details of those as plans unfold. In the meantime we have a full events programme throughout the autumn at our attractions, namely; Llancaiach Fawr Manor, Cwmcarn Forest and The Winding House. Details can be found on our website www. caerphilly.gov.uk/events For all you walking enthusiasts, The Valleys Walking Festival takes place from 4th to 19th September, for more details on how to participate in local Caerphilly walks and regional walks log on to www.thevalleys.co.uk/site/whats-on to download a brochure. Enjoy what’s left of the Great British summer! Sally Walters Marketing Officer, Advisory Services, Economic Development, Caerphilly County Borough Council www.visitcaerphilly.com

Living With Cancer Project Cancer patients from all over South Wales are being invited to take part in an innovative project. The project, which gives people affected by cancer help and advice, is being run to enable them to manage their illness in a better way.
A
group of patient volunteers have been trained by two experts in their field to provide all sorts of advice relating to the rehabilittion in cancer patients and they are now ready to run group sessions across the South Wales area.
The aim of the project is to allow everyone who has been diagnosed with cancer a chance to have access to simple, robust advice and the groups aim to provide comprehensive support to help people live as normal a life as possible. The project is being run by experts at Velidre Cancer Centre, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and is available across the South East Wales Cancer Network. It is part of a UK wide venture to improve support for people with cancer. Group sessions are available at many venues within the South East Wales area such as hotels, social clubs and golf clubs. The participants will be expected to attend just one session, which will last for approximately 2 hours.
Specially trained volunteers who have personal experience of cancer either as a patient or a carer will head the sessions. A consultant allied health professional who specialises in cancer rehabilitation and an experienced therapies manager have provided the training to the volunteers. At the end of the session, everyone will be provided with a handbook, which contains all the advice discussed during the session which is hoped will be of use in the future.
• There is no charge to attend the session. • Session times will depend upon the venue, though most are held during the day. • Refreshments will be provided.

That’s a Funny Thing to Say!
To be sold down the river – to be betrayed This saying originated in the American slave states, the river in question being the Mississippi. Troublesome slaves on the more northerly estates were sold ‘down the river’ to the southernmost plantations where conditions were much harsher. Beyond the pale – outside acceptable forms of behaviour Pale in this instance does not relate to the colour of the skin. In this phrase the pale referred to means a fence i.e. paling fence. The area enclosed within the fence became known as the pale, and was considered to be safe and secure. There were several ‘pales’ established across the world. In Russia Catherine the Great established the ‘Pale of Settlement’ in 1791. Others were set up around Dublin in Ireland and Calais in France.
To cut and run – run away, to escape Like many of the phrases in common usage this has a nautical origin. If a ship needed to make a hasty retreat it was much quicker to simply cut the ship’s cable rather than haul the anchor up. This is confirmed in a book by David Steel - The Elements and Practice of Rigging and Seamanship (1794); “To Cut and run, to cut the cable and make sail instantly, without waiting to weigh anchor.” Get off your high horse – stop behaving in a haughty manner In Medieval times Royalty and nobility rode powerful, high-bred horses which enabled them to look down on the commoners and the image portrayed was one of haughty superiority. To ‘get off one’s high horse’ implied that the person came down to the same social and intellectual level as ordinary folk.

Neighbourhood Policing
YOUR BEDWAS NEIGHBOURHOOD SERGEANT Sergeant Gareth Jones is the Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant for Bedwas. We sat down for a sixty second interview to find out a bit more about him: When did you join the police? I joined the Metropolitan Police Force in May 1988, where I first worked as a beat officer in Chelsea which covered areas such as the Kings Road. I transferred to Gwent Police in September 1994, and since then I’ve spent the majority of time working in the Rhymney Valley area. I was also a police trainer for four years training new recruits.
What is your favourite thing about working in Bedwas? We have a very supportive local community and it’s very varied, with people from all walks of life. What do you like to do outside of work? I love travelling around the UK to coastal areas, particularly Pembrokeshire. I also enjoy fly-fishing and sea-fishing. Apart from that I’m like most parents busy trying to look after and entertain my children, building their toys and trampolines, and cleaning out their guinea pig cages! What was the last holiday you went on? I’ve just come back from a week in Pembroke with my family, where we visited lots of local beaches and the children enjoyed body boarding.
Why did you want to join the police? I wanted a career that was exciting and varied, and got me out and about. What has been your most satisfying role in the police? Introducing Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to Gwent Police. I put together the training programme with another officer, and trained the very first PCSOs, including our own PCSO Chris Armstrong in Bedwas, back in March 2003.
Which football team do you support? Aston Villa and Huddersfield Town.

Wayne David MP
Safer Communities I have long been a strong supporter of local policing. I am old enough to remember when Panda cars were first introduced. There was a hue and cry from people because, quite rightly, they feared that, in place of Bobbies on the beat, we would see only policemen in cars. The last Government recognised the importance of local, neighbourhood policing and ensured that every single locality had a dedicated Police Officer, often supported by a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO). This welcome change of emphasis in policing is now under real threat. The first round of this Government’s public expenditure cuts is falling hard on the police. Recently, I met with the Gwent Police Authority and they explained to me how difficult it is going to be to reduce costs without cutting back on neighbourhood policing. Given that Gwent Police successfully undertook a streamlining of their organisation recently, I fear that it will be virtually impossible for them to make further cuts without Police and PCSO numbers being reduced. Another worrying development is the idea of elected Police Commissioners. One of the great strengths of policing in Britain has always been that it has been outside of crude political control.
Our Police have always worked with local communities and with Police Authorities who have represented the broader community. The Government now want to change this by scrapping Police Authorities and replacing them with directly elected Police Commissioners. These Commissioners will be a bit like Sheriffs in America. My fear is that you will have individuals standing for election on populist, single issue platforms. The result could be that we will have Commissioners who are either unable or unwilling to work with the community as a whole to make sure the policing needs of neighbourhoods are addressed successfully. Independent and impartial policing is a great British tradition. It is because I believe this so strongly that in Parliament I will be opposing the introduction of Police Commissioners.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery
Autumn ? …so that means that Spring’s coming! September eh? Often this month gives us some of the best sunny weather of the year, lets hope it is the same again this year, it will give us a chance to prepare for the winter and even more exciting for next spring… Now that may sound a little premature, but actually now is a great time to plant tubs baskets and borders with bulbs and bedding plants to flower through winter and really dazzle next spring; the thing is, if you wait until next spring you will struggle to find much that can go outside in your tubs and baskets until May - so if you want some colour during next February March and April – NOW IS THE TIME TO SORT IT! One of the best early flowerers are Crocus – with some really vivid colours from their flowers that will suddenly burst open like little 2inch high fireworks, when the sun warms them up enough in early spring – always bringing a reassuring smile to me, as I realise that we have turned a corner in the seasons and spring is storming in…lovely jubbly!
The great thing about Crocus is that you can always find room for a few more; they are so small that you can cram them inbetween other larger plants, or at the front edge of tubs and borders, or even out through the sides of hanging baskets. A month or two after flowering they will die back and disappear below ground for the summer …and autumn ….and winter… until they suddenly re-appear the following spring to cheer you up again – all for no extra charge. And if that wasn’t enough they sometimes have babies too – what a busy life they lead! So why not plant some now …then stand back and watch… Roger Crookes can be contacted on 07891 285 166 or apairofcrookes@lcsuk.net.

Penyrheol Bowls Charity Event
On the 1st August 2010 a bowling competition was held, organised by Penyrheol Bowls Club in aid of Velindre Hospital. This was the second year that such an event was held. In 2009 a total of £1113 was raised and this year a grand total of £1678.88 was achieved. 96 bowlers from clubs all over South Wales competed from 9.00am all day until the final was held in the early evening. This was then followed by a concert in the adjacent Aneurin Club. The winners of the bowls competition werea tam calling themselves ‘Caerphilly Town’, although three of the members were in fact from Penyrheol Club with the fourth a former member of that same club. The winners were Derek Williams, Paul Roberts, Gary Smith and Mike Smith. The mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Councillor James Fussell, attended and presented the prizes.
He congratulated the club on organising the event. The club wish to put on record its thanks to all who donated prizes for the raffles and auction and also to all who assisted in this memorable event in aid of Velindre Hospital.

The Alpha Course
51
This Autumn, members of Gateway Church will be hosting The Alpha Course. It is an opportunity to explore the Christian Faith in a relaxed manner over thought provoking weekly sessions. Roger Crookes explains. If I was to try and summarise the Alpha course in just a few words they would be • Friendship • Fun • Food • Thought provoking I have been on the course twice now; and have found the mixture of age groups, religious backgrounds (some ‘church goers’ – some not) and subject matters, always make for an interesting and enjoyable evening. Each weekly evening would typically last about 2 hours. Starting with the all important food, followed by a cuppa while watching a DVD for about 30-45 minutes….and then the fun starts! In a very relaxed atmosphere ….we talk. A chairperson helps get the conversations and questions flowing, with some key questions, and somehow, we often run out of time !
No-one is compelled to talk, but you can ask whatever you like – and it is great to listen to the variety of answers and thoughts from the rest of the group. I think that is one of the keys to the success of ‘Alpha’, compared to a traditional church service – instead of a whole bunch of people sat listening to the ‘preacher’ without being able to ask those burning questions, Alpha is very much an open discussion. There are so many mysteries around the subject of Church, God and Christianity, all those important questions and concerns need to be aired and discussed. So often, I found that other people asked the very question that I had been pondering …always nice to know that I am not only one who thinks like that! Enough from me; please see the advert below for more info regarding the next Alpha course running this Autumn in Caerphilly …maybe I’ll see you there….

These events take place all over the country, in stores that have been selected as Community Stores. They held 50 last year, which were hugely successful, and are holding another 100 this summer! The day will be free to customers and will include entertainment, music, refreshments and fun! We will have representatives from local community groups, charities and organisations. We will have a “Green” stall, and also a stall representing our charity of the year Clic Sargent. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of local groups and encourage our locals to volunteer. The whole day will cost nothing, and we hope will be a fun way of saying thank you to all our customers. Community Champion Kath Dawson says “ I am really pleased our store has been chosen to host a fair, and hope to show how we can all give something back to our local community. I look forward to seeing all our regular customers on the day!”

Thought for the Month
When all is said and done…it’s mostly just said! A year or so ago, beloved and I were in Bristol watching a rip roaring rock concert from a Christian Rock band.....whatever that is? It was a great night out, with much shouting, singing and jumping around …at times tinged with some challenging words to encourage us to demonstrate, not just talk about, Christian Love.
I like to shake hands with people when I first meet them – so as I went back and saw his outstretched empty hand, that is what we did, we shook hands introduced ourselves and got talking.
So we wandered out of the sweaty venue into the cool night air with our ears ringing and my tummy rumbling…we went on the hunt for some food. As we wandered around I saw a beggar only about 20 years old curled up under a blanket to try and keep the autumn drizzle off him. His head was down, and his hand was out, silently hoping for a couple of coins to drop in from some of the hundreds of concert goers streaming out.
I do not find conversation easy, but we seemed to get on fine, and he was certainly keen to talk… he seemed normal other than the fact that he was sleeping on the street 200 miles from his family.
Perhaps you can relate to the mental struggle that I went through as we approached him …and to be honest started to walk past him…you know the sort of thing..’I can afford a couple of quid’, ‘what if he wastes it on drugs’, ‘Really he needs professional help’, ‘maybe I’ll get him a sandwich’… we walked past but then turned back; thinking to myself this is someone’s son – his mum may be sat at home worrying where he is and praying that someone will stop and take care of him.
I can’t remember if we gave him any money; but what he thanked me for was my time (often the most precious gift we can give). “No-one ever wants to talk to me” he said, maybe that rejection is at the heart of his troubles? As we parted we were both smiling, which was just as uplifting as the concert. For me that was time and money well spent. Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net

The Legal Eagle
Publicly Funded Advice & Representation In recent weeks you have probably seen media coverage of the cuts by the Legal Services Commission of firms that are able to offer Publicly Funded (Legal Aid) advice and representation in family law. All practices offering Publicly Funded family and children work were invited to tender to continue to offer this service. Bids were submitted based on an application that was ‘point’ scored and thereafter work allocated based on the bid for market share the individual firm had submitted.
At the point of going to print an appeals process is underway for a vast number of firms.
Unfortunately, what was not apparent to law practices was that the effect of this process would be to drastically cut providers in each area.
Although the appeal process continues currently in Caerphilly three firms have failed to obtain contracts.
From the 14th October 2010 firms are only able to offer publicly funded family and child law representation if their application was successful and they had been awarded a contract. In every area throughout the Country cuts have been made, most significantly in Cardiff where a large number of providers have been cut to only a few.
The reality for Client’s who seek legal aid is a significantly reduced choice, with some Client’s being required to travel further afield to obtain representation.
Evans & Greaves Solicitors have successfully obtained a contract and are therefore pleased to be in a position to continue to provide advice and representation for Clients in relation to family and child law matters.

BTM Youth Band
The BTM (Bedwas Trethomas and Machen) Band has just had a major refurbishment of its band-room in Bedwas and now offers first class rehearsal facilities that are second to none in the country.
The band has always had a commitment to teach young people to learn to play a brass instrument and have been running classes for over 20 years. Indeed some of its players have gone on to become professional musicians as well as representing Wales on The National Youth Brass Band. We now aim to further develop the Youth Band to be able to perform at concert venues and participate in local/national competitions and festivals. It would be fantastic if your child could attend and participate in our youth band rehearsals. These are held from 6pm till 7pm every Thursday and 10am till 12 noon on Saturdays at The Band Hall, Newport Road, Bedwas CF83 8AA. We are holding an open evening on Monday 20th September, 7.00pm – please come along to see our new facility and encourage your child to join our Youth Band. Ideally, children should have their own instrument but we are able to provide one if necessary.
Children will be taught byy the experienced Euphonium player Mark Hutcherson who has won the “Blue Riband” at the National Eisteddfod of Wales on three occasions, has been British Open Euphonium Champion on five occasions and was the 1990 British Solo Champion. Mark is a teacher at Newport High School. Best regards

Caerphilly Miners Committee
The Caerphilly Miners Community Centre Management Committee (CMCCMC) has recently made great progress in saving the original building of the Caerphilly District Miners Hospital known as The Beeches. The CMCCMC has been running since 2008 with the aim of turning the building into a community centre once the hospital is decommissioned in 2011. To help build awareness and support for the project in the community they have recently held a number of events and would like to welcome members of the public to a free Coffee Morning from 10am to noon on 02 October at the Twyn Community Centre. Our machines cost over £30,000 and are over 20 times more powerful than the small low-grade, electric powered portable machines used by other carpet cleaners. Our machines commonly clean cinemas & bars, so when you call us to clean your home you will experience a far superior & much faster cleaning process, basically the same service as our big commercial clients How does it Work? Our machines are fixed into the vehicles, they run on fuel & have their own water tank, similar to a fire engine, we simply run 2 pipes into your home, the 1st pipe is similar to a jet-wash which sprays our 100% safe detergent solutions into the carpet, the second pipe disperses steam at 240 degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to kill germs, bacteria & all carpet bugs which then gets extracted into our on board waste tank. This process is the best; most thorough clean you can have for your home
