Beauty Tips Page 19 Hi all,

Welcome to the July edition of Local View. You can tell the Summer is here because Suggs and the Megaday gang are starting the build up towards the best music event in the Caerphilly calendar! They have a poster on page 44 advertising their first fundraiser “Dance For Life” in aid of Velindre Hospital at Pulsar’s Nightclub on the 23rd of July which will be the perfect ice-breaker for the August Bank Holiday festivities. Have a look at Stacy Francis’ article on page 24. She is rather enthusiastic about The Big Cheese events coming up in July. As well as The Big Cheese weekend near Caerphilly Castle, there is The Big Cheese Race if you are feeling energetic on page 51....I do like my Cheese!! Kath Dawson and the Tesco team are gearing up for Cancer Research’s Race for Life on the 18th of July and aiming to continue their stunning fund-raising efforts for charity. I had better warn Nelson’s Pharmacy to stock up on plasters and cooling gel due to all this franetic activity. See you next month

Working from home

The View From My Window by Ted Bruning

I’m not remotely mechanically minded, but I spend almost my whole day in the garage. That’s because it’s where my office is, in the garage. It has been, I should quickly reassure you, very thoroughly converted. The only traces of its original purpose are its dimensions—long and narrow—as a garage has to be, and the fact that the exterior wall seems to be made of tissuepaper, so it’s always freezing. Also, of course, the window at which I sit occupies the space that was once a garage door, so I have a panoramic view of my street – or an arc of about 80º of it – from half past eight in the morning until about half past five at night. All human life parades past me in a fascinating and never-ending round as I sit gazing out, not getting on with work as I should. And it’s never the same thing twice. Ministerial motorcades. Car-crashes and crimes. The carnival procession. And then there was the day the circus came to town! I was so rapt I didn’t even care when the elephant trod on my begonias... All right, it’s fantasy. I live on a modern street in a modern housing estate on the edge of a working (ie not all that picturesque) village. Deadline for our August issue is Weds 21st July at 10am

My 80º arc reveals four houses exactly like mine: yellow brick, UPVC double-glazed windows, built-in garages with metal rollover doors – at least they’re all different colours – little porches containing downstairs loos with frosted windows, all with a bottle of bleach just visible on the sill. The only things that happen are that the pensioner down the street comes home from the newsagent with his paper at 9.15am (although oddly, I never see him going to the newsagent, just coming back), and at 12.45 sharp the guy across the road comes home from work for his lunch (although oddly, again, I never see him going back to work). I’ve been sitting here for over three years. It’s no wonder I’m slowly going bonkers... But actually, there is one element in my street-scene that holds the attention: and that’s the cats. Our street seems to be overrun with cats. Not horrible mangy ferals, but sleek well-fed swaggering ones. I don’t know where they all live, and my own cat refuses to have anything to do with them. Perhaps that’s why they all seem to think that my front garden has been provided by the authorities for their convenience. And that’s convenience as in public convenience. Every time I want to mow the little handkerchiefs of grass on either side of my “drive”, I have to go round carefully with the dog’s pooper-scooper first. Because when mower-blade meets cat-poo – yes, well, I leave the consequences to your imagination. But those cats are going to save my sanity. Because I’m going into town now to buy me one of those super-soakers, and I’m going to fill me that super-soaker with ice-cold water with maybe just a soupcon of vinegar in it, and every time one of those cats sets foot in my front garden I’m going to pick up that super-soaker and throw open my office window and I’m going to GET THAT CAT! Hang on – did I just say “those cats are going to save my sanity”? Depends on your definition of sanity, I suppose.

Origins ~ Well known sayings

By hook or by crook – achieve something by any way possible This originates in Medieval England when all forests were owned by the king and out of bounds to commoners unless they were collecting firewood. They were only allowed to collect the deadwood lying on the ground or branches which could be reached with a shepherd’s crook or cut off by w reaper’s billhook. Caught flat footed – to be unprepared This relates to horse racing and was used as early as the 18th century during Queen Anne’s reign. When horses line up at the start of the race they are often light on their feet and eager to run. Those who are slow to start and have all four hooves on the ground were said to be flat footed.

C

By a long chalk – to win easily, way ahead of the competition Believed to come from the atheltics or sports world. Chalk marks would be used to indicate the length of the throw (in the javelin for example) and the winning throw could be easily seen. An alternative origin could be when chalk was used to make merit marks, before lead pencils were in use, and the longer the merit mark the higher the score. The dog days of summer – very hot days of July and August This is an ancient expression coming from the Romans. They believed that the hottest days of summer coincided with the rising of Sirius the Dog Star. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky and the heat of the star combined with that of the sun produces the stifling heat.

Focus on Beauty WAXING LYRICAL Just the thought of waxing can make even the strongest minded woman go weak, but it needn’t be a painful option if carried out regularly and with good preparation. Waxing can leave the skin smooth for longer than many other hair removal regimes. Waxing versus shaving As we all know, the more you shave, the coarser the hair becomes, and it grows faster as well. In fact, the act of shaving encourages hair growth! On the other hand, waxing can remove hair for longer periods. This is because waxing pulls out the hair from the root, weakening the growth. When the hair does grow back, it will be finer and softer each time. If you haven’t waxed before, you should wait at least two weeks after shaving before your first wax attempt. This enables the hair to reach a sufficient length for the wax to grip.

19

Exfoliate first As with shaving, waxing can cause ingrown hairs, so always exfoliate first to help prevent that from happening. The day before you are due to wax, use an exfoliating brush to remove dead skin cells. Brushing is the best method of exfoliating because some skin care exfoliation products have ingredients that can irritate waxed skin. If all the exfoliating scrub isn’t properly rinsed off, it could leave behind harsh particles which react might badly with wax. Get the right kit Do make sure your wax kit deals with the right area, for example, facial hair, underarms, the bikini area, or your legs.

Plant of the Month Sunflower - Helianthus

From children to Vincent van Gogh - everyone loves sunflowers This glorious flower has a place in everyone’s hearts. Artists, farmers, nutritionists, children, mathematicians and of course, gardeners, all adore the sunflower. It was the subject of many of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings; farmers harvest them for seeds and oil while nutritionists advocate eating the healthy produce. Children and gardeners love them because they’re quick and easy to grow with spectacular results. But mathematicians? Yes! The sunflower is an impressive example of maths in nature. A sunflower head is actually made up of small florets with each floret angled towards the next by the ‘golden angle’, 137.5°. This creates two spirals running in opposite directions which when counted demonstrate a set of numbers known as the Fibonacci series. Maths aside, sunflowers produce a stunning display for everyone. There are many varieties with colours ranging from sunny yellow, fiery orange and deep red. All are annuals so should be replanted each year. Seeds can be sown directly in the ground

where you want them to flower. Tall varieties need to be tied to a cane as their height increases. Bees love the flowers and birds feast on the seeds. Although we think of sunflowers as tall plants, there are plenty of shorter species available for borders where their bright, cheerful faces bring sunshine to any part of your garden.

Friends of Caerphilly Music

FRIENDS OF CAERPHILLY MUSIC is a registered charity which was set up by local residents in 1994 to support the performance of live music in the Town and District, specifically to work in the schools among pupils of all ages. As music-lovers we knew from personal experience that listening to music performed live in the company of others is a vastly different experience from listening to it in solitary fashion on cassette, CD, radio or TV. We also knew from our own experience that not all children are fortunate enough to be introduced within their homes to the wonderful variety of music waiting to be discovered. We believe that good music is not confined to just one or two kinds and that young people should have the experience of listening to, and learning to enjoy, as many kinds as possible. In line with this belief we have provided everything from folk duo to string quartet, samba to jazz, opera to brass quintet, piano accordion to harp, and many more. The musicians range from highly experienced professionals to aspiring performers who are students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama or the Music Department of Cardiff University. We send musicians into all the schools in Caerphilly and the Aber Valley, the Infants and Primary Schools and the three Comprehensives (including Bedwas High since St. Ilan closed), as well as Trinity Fields and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni which, although outside our geographical area, have many of our young people on their rolls. The contribution we make to the musical life of the schools is greatly appreciated by the teachers as well as the youngsters, as these comments illustrate: “The children were captivated by an excellent performance. The opportunity for them to listen to such accomplished musicians is much appreciated”. Rhydri Primary School “I just wanted to thank you for this morning’s performance. It was fantastic! I spoke to the children after their break and their only criticism was that it was too short……I took the opportunity to watch their faces and they were absolutely enthralled”. St Helen’s Primary School “Thank you for giving us the opportunity to experience the wonderful musical talents of the Brass Quintet. It was truly a delight. The children were completely enthralled for the whole 45 minutes, even the three year old Nursery children. I can’t begin to say how much they gained from the experience. They talked about it all day”. Cwm Aber Infants School

Deadline for our August issue is Weds 21st July at 10am

Our sincere thanks to the Friends of Caerphilly Music for funding and arranging such a memorable musical event for us. The performance by the Glendower Duo was a huge success and really made the pupils think about the different characteristics of music from different countries. I would like to express my thanks for all the help and hard work over the years. (St. Martin’s School) We have more than a hundred Friends who support our activities with an annual donation. We ask for a minimum of £5, although many are pleased to give more. If you are a parent, grandparent, or simply a musiclover, who would like to become a Friend, please get in touch with our Membership Secretary, Mrs Joan Carmichael, telephone 029 2088 7381.

Neighbourhood Policing

Your Caerphilly Neighbourhood Sergeant Sergeant Andy Elias is the Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant for Caerphilly. We sat down for a sixty second interview to find out a bit more about him:

of issues. What has been your most satisfying role in the police? I really enjoy working in Neighbourhood Policing as the role is so diverse and I have seen the positive difference that neighbourhood policing can have in a community.

When did you join the police? I joined the Metropolitan Police in June 1998, spending time in both Wandsworth and Brixton as a uniform constable. I transferred to Gwent Police in December 2001, where I first worked for a year in Duffryn as a uniform constable. I then moved to Caerphilly where I have worked in a number of roles. I was one of the first Neighbourhood Police Officers in the Force, spending a year in the Aber Valley and then almost four years covering the Penyrheol area, before being promoted to Sergeant in February.

What is your favourite thing about working in Caerphilly? No two days are ever the same, as each of the areas within Caerphilly is different. It’s great to work within these various communities and to help tackle any issues that local residents may be experiencing. What do you like to do outside of work? I enjoy doing a variety of different sporting activities such as cycling, surfing and running. I like to take part in Sportives Distance Rides, and in June entered the Tour of Pembrokeshire. The 68 mile cycle ride started in Tenby and ended near Narbeth, going via St. Davids, Fishguard and the Preseli Hills.

Why did you want to join the police? I wanted to do a job where I could help to make a difference and where I could deal with a diverse range

Tesco Crossways supporting Clic Sargent

June has been a very busy month at Tesco Crossways, especially for the ladies, writes Kath Dawson! We have been preparing for our Cancer Research Race for Life event on Sunday 18th June, and some are taking their training very seriously! If you would like to sponsor any of our ladies, or would like further information on the events, please see Kath instore. We have all pledged at least £50 each in sponsorship, which would make a whopping £2000 for the charity at our branch alone! The biggest event we have held instore this month though was our Football themed fundraising weekend, which took place on 18th and 19th June. We held a “Kits and WAGS” themed dress up, and had a staff cake sale. We also held a book sale in the foyer, and did face painting for the staff and customers, which was very popular!

We raised a staggering £542.00 over the two days, which thanks to the generosity of our customers was simply brilliant! As you are aware, the money raised for Clic Sargent at our branch stays locally, and helps children and their families in our own community. Community Champion Kath would like to thank everybody who participated for their time and generosity. As usual our customers are brilliant!

Wayne David

The thinking behind the Budget Few members of the public appreciate fully that over the past couple of years Britain has gone through the worst financial crisis since the 1930s. The worldwide banking crisis created an international economic downturn, the likes of which we have not witnessed since the Wall Street Crash of 1929. If we have experienced such a crisis why is it, you might ask, unemployment has not rocketed, inflation has not soared and living standards have not plummeted? The answer is because the last Labour Government pursued a range of policies which tackled head on the financial crisis, in a way that prevented it turning into an economic crisis. The banks were, quite literally, saved from collapse, employment was supported through Government intervention and the basis had been laid for a firm, if not spectacular, economic improvement through 2010/2011. All of this needed the Government to borrow large sums of money. Of course, it was always understood that this money would have to be repaid. This was the kind of economic management which was advocated by the economist John Maynard Keynes in the 1930s. It was the thinking behind the New Deal in America which saw the introduction of huge public works projects to provide employment for those who had lost their jobs.

The new Conservative/ Liberal coalition government completely rejects this approach. As we saw in the Budget, the new Government is determined to pay back quickly the money the country has borrowed, even before the economic recovery has been secured. I would also argue that the new Conservative led Government has used the situation to mount an ideological attack on both the welfare state and the public sector. The consequences of the Budget will be extremely painful, I fear, for the Caerphilly constituency. The public sector is the biggest employer by far in the area and we are likely to see significant job losses in the local authority and possibly the health service. The VAT increase will hit the less well off particularly hard and, as we all know, the South Wales Valleys are already one of the poorest parts of Britain. At the same time, welfare benefits will be cut right, left and centre. The future does not look good.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

The Guernsey Lily Is it just me? As I get older (I can’t believe I just wrote that, but I suspect it is true!) long lost memories seem to reappear, and all of a sudden I can relive all sorts of pleasant experiences from …um… a few decades ago. So as I found myself arriving in the Channel Islands last week, to visit a garden centre, I got all nostalgic remembering our family forays to the islands, in those long hot summers of the 70’s. Frequently my memories tend to include plants – I must have a dominant plants gene somewhere – and the plant I remember my Mum pointing out to us during a holiday on Guernsey was ‘The Guernsey Lily’. Jersey residents will probably claim it as theirs; but there can be no squabbling over 2 facts 1. Its Latin name is Agapanthus 2. It’s a beauty! Large circular clusters of azure blue flowers – to match the sea and sky around Guernsey – are carried a couple of feet high on sturdy stems through the summer months.

There is something unusual and slightly tropical about this hardy and easy to grow plant. Agapanthus will come back year after year, often multiplying to produce more and more flowers as it gets older. It will, however, die back below ground overwinter (and who can blame it?) but fear not, just like the Horticultural equivalent of Arnold Schwarzenegger, your Agapanthus ‘will be back’. They don’t seem to be very fussy about soil; probably preferring some good drainage and will give you more in the way of flowers if they are in a sunny spot. They also look great in a patio pot, where they can stay for a few years, you can bring to a ‘prime position’ when they start to flower and then move them somewhere less prominent when they have finished ..until next year. Roger Crookes can be contacted on 07891 285 166 or apairofcrookes@lcsuk.net.

42 Easing off on Emotional Eating By Lorraine Mace

unsatisfied, you could end up malnourished. Eat from a wide variety of non-processed food with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Habits If you can identify your bad eating habits, it’s easier to change them. Does your emotional eating follow a pattern? When are you most likely to binge? When do you reach for snack food? Delaying tactics Rather than reaching out immediately for comfort food, why not put some delaying tactics in place? Before you open the fridge or packet of crisps, stand still and breathe slowly. Slow breathing helps to release tension. Have the phone number of a trusted friend close at hand, one who knows you’re trying to change your eating habits. Go for a walk. Walking releases endorphins, which is your body’s natural happy drug.

Many of us reach for food in times of stress, but if you find this is happening more frequently than ever, you might have become an emotional eater. This means that, rather than eating because you’re hungry, you’re eating to calm your emotions. This can happen so gradually that you may not be aware that you’re eating when bored, lonely or anxious. Feelings Emotional eating is often fear-based and connected with low self-esteem. One way of finding out if this is the case is to ask, “What am I blocking out with this bar of chocolate/biscuit/ cake/pizza?” Why not try letting that emotion come to the surface without being judgemental? Very often, simply accepting the way you feel can cause the feelings to change. Poor diet Eating junk food depletes the body of nutrients. This can mean that you are still hungry after a meal, even if you’ve eaten until you can’t fit in another mouthful! ot only could you be left feeling Deadline for our August issue is Weds 21st July at 10am

Genuine pleasures During a period when you aren’t feeling emotional, make a pleasure list. Write down all the things you enjoy doing and can easily make into regular activities. When you’re doing something active the chances are you won’t reach for comfort food. On a second list, write down all the things you’ve wanted to do, but haven’t got round to. These would be special treats – things to look forward to. You could go for a day trip to the beach, visit a museum, see a musical or a play, treat yourself to a massage or spa day out, or buy yourself a beautiful houseplant. You could also take up a new hobby, such as learning to play an instrument, take evening classes in language studies, or even a creative writing course. Basically, breaking your old habits of emotional eating will require making a commitment to yourself. Acceptance Planning your meals and shopping with a list will help you to avoid reaching for snacks when you’re not really hungry, but don’t beat yourself up if you slip during difficult periods in your life. If you find that you’ve fallen back into emotional eating, accept that it’s happened and forgive yourself. Remember, you need to identify the underlying reason for comfort eating.

To make little fish nuggets that the kids will love, shape about 4 balls from one quantity of fishcake and coat in the same way. Fry for only 2-3 mins.

Makes 8 fishcakes Ready in 1 hr

Smoked Haddock Fishcakes 900g (2lb) floury potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 450g (1lb) smoked haddock fillet 6 tbsp canned sweetcorn kernels 2 tbsp each fresh chopped parsley and chives 2 tsp finely grated lemon rind 2 tbsp seasoned flour 1 large egg, beaten 75g (3oz) fresh white breadcrumbs Oil for shallow frying Salad and lime wedges to serve

1. Boil the potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted water until just tender. Drain and mash. Transfer to a bowl, leave to cool. 2. Place the haddock in a frying pan, cover with water and simmer for 8-10 mins until just cooked. Remove with a fish slice and flake the fish discarding any skin and bones. Add to the mash with the sweetcorn, parsley, chives and lemon rind. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix well. 3. Using floured hands divide and shape the mixture into 8 fishcakes. Coat each fishcake in seasoned flour, then dip in beaten egg and coat in the breadcrumbs. Chill for at least 30 mins. 4. Shallow fry the fishcakes in hot oil for 3-4 mins on each side until golden. Drain and serve with salad and lemon wedges.

Financial Focus ~ Pension Reform

The UK Government is currently reviewing its pension reform strategy, and estimates that about seven million people are currently under saving for retirement. A major part of the reform is the Government’s ideas for making it easier for these people to save for retirement and formally extend people’s working lives. The proposals will have wide ranging effects across UK businesses, putting the onus on employers to help encourage more people to save: From October 2012 UK employers will be required to automatically enrol employees into a ‘qualifying pension scheme’. This could be your existing company pension scheme, (if one exists), otherwise employees will be enrolled into NEST, a low-cost pension scheme being introduced by the Government. Between October 2012 and 2017, depending on the size of company, all UK employers will be required to contribute a minimum of 3% of each employee’s eligible earnings into a pension, assuming the employee does not “opt out”. This is intended to encourage them to start saving towards their retirement. Employees will need to pay a personal contribution of 4% with a further 1% tax relief being added to make the minimum contribution 8%.

For many employers with suitable schemes in place this will present little challenge. Those without such arrangements will need to appraise themselves of the changes, whilst increasing their knowledge of pension provision. Many will inevitably turn at that time to their advisers or seek advice from an IFA, thus incurring costs for advice. This is where pre-empting these requirements by arranging their own ‘qualifying pension scheme’ could prove advantageous to employers, as in many cases the cost of advice both present and future may be incorporated into the scheme structure. If this area of advice concerns you, or you feel that you may wish to put such an arrangement in place now to cater for these changes and save on advice fees, you know where I am. Paolo Roberts. Independent Financial Advisor paoloroberts@hhpg.net Paolo lives in Caerphilly and been advising clients in the area for many years.

This leaves UK employers with a pivotal role in the Government plan to solve our pension problem.

“Window on Guiding”

Girlguiding Rhymney Valley are having an exhibition of 100 years of guiding in the valley during the Big Cheese In St Martin’s Church hall in Park Lane, on the weekend of the Big Cheese, Girlguiding Rhymney Valley will be putting on a major exhibition to celebrate and remember 100 years of Guiding. The Guide movement began in 1909 when a small group of young women gate-crashed the Boy Scout rally at Crystal Palace Park in London and lobbied Robert Baden-Powell for ‘something for the girls’. The Centenary is an opportunity to celebrate the impact that the organisation has made on the lives of girls and young women and how modern guiding continues to support over half a million members around the UK to make new friends, develop skills and achieve their full potential in a unique girl only space. Locally, girls take part in activities such as camps and adventure holidays, international travel, community action, etc. The first Guide Unit in the Rhymney Valley was opened in 1923 – 1st Caerphilly Guides. They were followed closely by 2nd Caerphilly – in fact both units were opened during the same year. Currently, there are 25 units, scattered up the valley between Caerphilly and Rumney, taking in Senghenydd and Nelson along the way. At the last count, there were 281 girls and 52 leaders, including girls from age 6 to 18 in Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section. Deryn McAndrew, currently Commissioner of Girlguiding Rhymney Valley, said “Guiding has been a major influence on the lives of women and young girls in the valley. Since we started the centenary celebrations, I have been amazed at how many people have been involved as a girl or as a leader, and how many happy memories they have of their time in Girlguiding” As an example of exciting activities, this year our members were involved in a show in St David’s Hall in February, where the girls presented 1980’s Guiding activities in the Rhymney Valley. Then they took part in the Old Library Girlguiding Exhibition in Cardiff, and some of our exhibits have been borrowed from there. The Guides in Caerphilly went on a Wales-wide camp in Builth, and held a “pitch and munch” in St. Martin’s church in June. We have 5 other camps and pack holidays arranged through the summer, and several leaders are helping as staff in Wales and UK centenary camps. We also have international selection events, Baden Powell Adventure events, Training events for leaders and girls, walks with the woodland trust, the Flower Festival, etc. etc. And of course most units are doing the “Adventure 100” challenge - a range of activities to give new experiences, which results in a special badge. This centenary year has produced a wide range of badges to commemorate the celebrations, and

Deadline for our August issue is Weds 21st July at 10am

some of these will be on sale at the “Window on Guiding” exhibition. In particular, there is a new badge showing the Rhymney Valley Division Standard . The centenary celebrations will go on to the end of the year – we have a Promise ceremony on 20th October – in Llancaiach Fawr for the top of the valley, and in St Martin’s church for the Caerphilly area. Then there’s a “Centenary End” party in Llanbradach, and a carol service in Cardiff. It’s a very busy and exciting year! Why not pop in and see us at the church hall on 24th or 25th July – we will be open from 10am to 4pm each day, and there will be lots to see and do. We will have exhibitions of girls doing traditional activities – such as putting up canvas tents, cooking over wood fires, and making “gadgets” out of sticks and canes. We will have activities for children - face painting, crafts, singing games, and parachute games outside in the Dafydd Williams park overlooking the castle. There will also be seating and refreshments so that you can enjoy a short break from all the fun of the Big Cheese. And, of course, there will be photographs of guiding activities in the valley – together with uniforms, computer presentations, DVD’s, books, badges, flags, etc. So come along and see if you can see yourself as a Brownie or Guide, having fun over the years. Why not meet up with old friends in Guiding for a cup of coffee and a talk over old times? If you have any memorabilia – photographs, badges, books etc., why not bring it along and share it with us? We will be delighted to receive your memories for our archives, or just to see and share them with you.

See you there...... St Martin’s Church Hall Park Lane, Caerphilly 24th & 25th July – we will be open from 10am to 4pm each day, and there will be lots to see and do.

Thought for the Month

Daddy

Good friends of ours always buy me a book for Christmas; this year it was a biography by a chap Nigerian called Ken Wiwa*, whose father died for his country back in 1995. The son wrote the book to describe his sometimes difficult journey to understand his Dad. At one point he said something that got my attention “…to truly know yourself, you must first know your Father…” And as often seems to happen with me, it got me thinking…. The Bible encourages us to know God as ‘Abba Father’ which can translate literally as Dadda or Daddy: is that how you or I know him? How do you picture him? • Angry school headmaster type, with cane ready in hand, ready to catch you ‘up to no good’ ? • Wimpish, harp playing, fluffy cloud riding, long bearded fellow possibly related to Santa ? When Jesus taught us how to pray with ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ his opening words were “Our Father” Jesus – The Son of God – invites us to join him

as sons and daughters of God, and address the creator as ‘Daddy’…..Hang on…

Does that mean we have the same status and as Jesus? That doesn’t feel quite right does it…I mean, he was / is perfect…and perfect is not a word I would use to describe me… Taking Ken Wiwa’s advice – to know your Dad – I looked at the story which Jesus told about the prodigal son (that’s me folks!), which actually is more about the Father; take a look, you can find it in Luke chapter 15 verse 11 onwards. What a great Dad to have on our side eh? Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net * In the shadow of a saint, by Ken Wiwa. (published by Doubleday)

New self-help group in Caerphilly

A breath of fresh air! New Breathe Easy group in Caerphilly for people with lung conditions opens People in Caerphilly with lung conditions now have a new self help support group, called Breathe Easy Caerphilly. Launched on Wednesday 9 June at the Twyn Community Centre, the group now plan to meet regularly on the second Monday of each month from 2 – 4 pm. Breathe Easy Caerphilly aims to provide mutual support to it’s members, people with lung conditions , family , friends and carers , as well as providing information and education about living with a lung condition. Future meeting dates are 12 July , 9 August , and 13 September. One in five people in Wales has a lung condition. This is why the Breathe Easy groups are so important. The groups are for people with all types of breathing problems, whether caused by asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, or any other lung condition. The British Lung Foundation supports over 20 Breathe Easy groups across Wales. Adrian Bailey, Development Officer for the British Lung Foundation Wales, said “It’s fantastic to have a

new group starting in Caerphilly. We know that many people in the area are keen to get involved. Breathe Easy groups give people with lung disease, their families and carers the opportunity to get together to help each other. “The group will give people a chance to share experiences, socialise, and get helpful advice from guest speakers such as respiratory nurses or pharmacists. There’s no need to get a referral – you can just turn up on the day. We look forward to seeing you!”

THE ABSOLUTE MOST THOROUGH CARPET & SOFA CLEAN YOU’LL EVER

SEE WITH NO DISRUPTIONS, IF YOU’RE NOT COMPLETELY SATISFIED WE WON’T TAKE YOUR MONEY, IT’S FREE

QUICK DRYING - YOU CAN WALK ON YOUR CARPETS STRAIGHT AFTER WE FINISH CLEANING THEM WE MOVE YOUR FURNITURE - WE CLEAN UNDER THEM THEN PUT THEM BACK IN PLACE, IT’S INCLUDED CERTIFIED STAFF - CLEAN TOGETHER IN PAIRS, SO THE CLEANING PROCESS IS FAST AND EFFICIENT

Our machines cost over £30,000 and are over 20 times more powerful than the small low-grade, electric powered portable machines used by other carpet cleaners. Our machines commonly clean cinemas & bars, so when you call us to clean your home you will experience a far superior & much faster cleaning process, basically the same service as our big commercial clients How does it Work? Our machines are fixed into the vehicles, they run on fuel & have their own water tank, similar to a fire engine, we simply run 2 pipes into your home, the 1st pipe is similar to a jet-wash which sprays our 100% safe detergent solutions into the carpet, the second pipe disperses steam at 240 degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to kill germs, bacteria & all carpet bugs which then gets extracted into our on board waste tank. This process is the best; most thorough clean you can have for your home
