HALF PRICE CARPET CLEANING
Here’s the proven way to completely remove those infested germs, dirt grime and stains quickly without disruptions….You’ll be left with clean, dry, sanitized carpets & sofas, smelling fresh that will look and feel virtually new 100% Money Back Guarantee ‐ the most thorough carpet & sofa clean you’ll ever see If you’re not completely satisfied we’ll give you your money back... It’s Free Quick Drying ‐ you can walk on your carpets straight after we finish cleaning them We Move Your Furniture ‐ we clean under them then put them back in place, it’s included Fully Trained Staff ‐ clean together in pairs, so the cleaning process is fast and efficient Our machines cost over £30,000 and are over 20 times more powerful than the small low-grade, electric powered portable machines used by other carpet cleaners. Our machines commonly clean cinemas & bars, so when you call us to clean your home you will experience a far superior & much faster cleaning process, basically the same service as our big commercial clients How does it Work? Our machines are fixed into the vehicles, they run on fuel & have their own water tank, similar to a fire engine, we simply run 2 pipes into your home, the 1st pipe is similar to a jet-wash which sprays our 100% safe detergent solutions into the carpet, the second pipe disperses steam at 240 degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to kill germs, bacteria & all carpet bugs which then gets extracted into our on board waste tank. This process is the best; most thorough clean you can have for your home

Beauty Tips Hi all, It seems that Stacy and the rest of the CBCC events team are gearing up for two of the biggest dates in their Calendar - The Big Cheese and the Blackwood Summer Festival! There are lots of fun activities. If you are going to either (or both) of these fun packed occasions then send me your pictures and I will try to include them in a future magazine and on the MY Local View Facebook page. Gwent Police have contributed an article about a new initiative - OWL (Online Watch Link) which is designed to help create Neighbourhood Watch Groups across the Borough and enable local residents the chance to work with the Police to prevent crime. I think it is a fabulous idea and hope you take the time to register your street in the scheme. You can read about OWL on page 56. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine. All the best, Paul p.s. Did you know that a star from Coronation Street is going to be at The Big Cheese?

Caerphilly & District Floral Society
The Caerphilly & District Floral Society, founded in 1971 is this year celebrating its’ Ruby Anniversary. During May a celebration took place at the Twyn Community Centre, to which 65 members, past and present were invited. Several of those attending the function were founder members of the club. Also present were ladies who had been tutors, most of the present members, and many past members. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful buffet – and was able to browse through many photographs and memorabilia depicting the history of the club. The society, which is affiliated to N.A.F.A.S. has achieved a great deal during the last 40 years. Many local charities and churches have benefited from displays put on by the club. The society regularly takes part in the annual Caerphilly Flower Festival, and many of the ladies who produce displays at the local churches have learnt their craft through belonging to the club.
The members meet in the Twyn Community Centre on the first Tuesday evening of every month from 7pm – 9pm and on the following day from 2pm – 4pm. For further information please contact Nesta Williams on 01443 831009

Beauty Tips Summer Hair Care You may have a vision in your mind’s eye of your hair blowing in the summer wind looking fresh and gently highlighted. However the reality is that strong sun, high temperatures, humidity and pool or sea water will damage your hair leaving it dry, brittle and anything but healthy. You can help yourself by generally taking a gentler approach to your hair styling in the summer months. Use a mild shampoo, wash less frequently to allow the natural oils to be absorbed and when you do wash your hair, finish with a cool or cold rinse to seal the cuticle. Try to limit hair treatments such as bleaching and cut back on your usage of heated hair styling tools such as curlers and hair straighteners. If your hair is long enough, put it into a
loose bun and tuck the ends out of sight as this is the most vulnerable part. Pulling your hair back in this way can also mean you don’t have a parting which will prevent sunburn on your scalp, although don’t forget to apply sunscreen all around the hairline. If you don’t have long hair, do have a parting and don’t want to wear a hat, it’s essential that you apply sun lotion to your scalp. Your hair might look a little greasy during the day, but that’s better than a peeling scalp making you look like you have bad dandruff. Wet your hair with plain water before going into a pool or the sea as this will reduce the amount of chlorine or salt absorbed into your hair. Once you’ve had a swim, rinse your hair with plain water again before sitting back in the sun, and use a mild shampoo at the end of the day to ensure those chemicals and salt aren’t continuing to do their worst.

Caerphilly events update
Hi all,
workers – they are proving to be a real asset to the team during these busy times.
There is nothing more enjoyable for us in the events team at Caerphilly CBC, than visiting other organiser’s events, and I must say that I had a great day out with the family at the ‘Go Wild’ event in Pontllanfraith Council Office grounds on 11th June, as well as the Bargoed Carnival at Heolddu Playing Fields. Well done to the organisers - they were great events and the heavy showers didn’t put visitors off. I picked up some great tips for my events too!
Preparations are still on-going for our two new high profile events ‘BBC Proms in the Park’ and ‘ Tour Of Britain’ which both take place in September, and partnership working is proving to be beneficial, meeting new faces and developing great relationships,. We enjoy developing the events programme and with the addition of these high profile and prestigious events it makes our effort and dedication worthwhile.

Hot on the heels of the NEW Blackwood Festival is the annual Big Cheese Festival. I have been working hard to try and introduce some new elements to the event with the main feature for 2011 being the re-introduction of the cookery demonstration marquee. Back in the beginning when the Big Cheese first started out, cookery demonstrations proved a popular attraction, so it’s returning with something for all you Coronation Street lovers out there.

This event is going to be a street party to remember. Not only do we have some children’s favourite TV characters - Peppa Pig, Hello Kitty, Ben 10 and Fireman Sam in attendance, there will also be a selection of high quality funfair rides, entertainers, children’s activities and even a mini beach! So even if it’s a boiling hot weekend, don’t worry about heading off to the seaside, as it’s all here right on your doorstep. There will even be some keepsakes, as the characters will be handing out windmills for children to take home as a memory of a fantastic day out. Come rain or shine this is not to be missed – I don’t think the kids will let you mind you! Visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk/summerfest for more information.

Motoring - Cheap Convertibles
The sun may have only been out for a little bit, but with the sunburn and the smell of barbecues comes that annual hankering for a cheap convertible. There’s nothing quite like a spot of topdown motoring when the temperature manages to haul itself into double figures – and the good news is it won’t have to cost you a second mortgage. Here, we delve into the online classifieds to find you five bargain summer sizzlers that you can put on your drive for less than £2,000. Just remember to save some cash for the Factor 50… Mazda MX-5, from £780 The MX-5 is a perennial soft-top favourite and rightly so. It’s been around for 21 years now which means there are plenty of cheaper examples knocking about. Our £2,000 budget can get a well-looked after original model, not an import, with relatively low mileage. The Mazda is brilliant to drive, cheap to run and repair and the perfect entry into convertible ownership. Saab 9-3 Convertible, from £850 Yes, you read that right. Saab 9-3 Convertibles can be had for under £1,000. That’s a huge amount of car for the money. You’ll be able to seat four in comfort, it’s built like a tank and will go on forever. And that’s handy because for this money you’re looking at a 150,000-miler plus. We found one with 180k, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol lump, service history, tax and MOT for six months at £850 on Auto Trader. Be quick as we’re tempted ourselves… Fiat Barchetta, from £999 This has to be the cheapest way into Italian twoseater soft-top ownership. The little Barchetta only comes in left-hand drive, which helps bring values down. If you can live with that, you’ll be rewarded with a cracking drive, good looks and a zesty 1.7-litre engine. Some drivers will
find the cabin a little cramped, but you’ll soon forget that when you’re blasting along country lanes with the top down. A 1998 model with 50,000 miles and service history can be found for £2,000. Audi A4 Cabriolet, from £2,000 You’ll have to hunt pretty hard, but Audi A4 Cabriolet models do occasionally crop up within this price bracket. That might mean looking in the depths of winter when the last thing people want is a soft-top, but canny buyers will be rewarded for their efforts. The A4 is solid, well packaged and usually comes with a high spec. For this money you’ll find a tired petrol model with intergalactic mileage but, have it looked at by an independent, and you could be onto a winner. Mercedes SLK, from £2,295 Ok, so it might be a little over our budget but we think with a little hard negotiating you could pick up an SLK for under £2k. We spotted an R-reg model in black with 120k miles, 6 months tax and four months MOT at a dealer for £2,295 ono – easily negotiable within budget. The Mercedes is a timeless design, has a folding metal roof and, although not the quickest, is still great to drive.

The Twyn School & local community
We had a Wild Weekend for Wales! Over 85 groups from across Wales have been successful in applying for free B&Q vouchers as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Have a Wild Weekend for Wales’ campaign. Working in partnership with B&Q groups were encouraged to improve local biodiversity by undertaking small projects to benefit native species. Volunteers from The Twyn School, Caerphilly Parks Department and friends of the school rolled up their sleeves, got back to nature and gave local wildlife a helping hand in Caerphilly. They were successful in applying for £250 B&Q vouchers, which they used to buy native shrubs, seeds, tools, compost, pond materials and gloves.
‘ Have a Wild Weekend for Wales’ has enabled us to make a huge improvement to the biodiversity of The Twyn School woodland area and hopefully this will benefit the local nature and wildlife population.
During the Wild Weekend we used the tools to make bug hotels, planted plants, shrubs and seeds, created a pathway using stones from the wood, dug out a pond, put in pond weed, put up bird boxes, collected and got rid of litter and gave the forest a helping hand.
Lesley Jones, Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy, said: “I am delighted that so many groups across Wales got involved with this campaign and did something wonderful for wildlife.
Michael Lock (reception class teacher and Forest School leader) said, “It was great to see so many volunteers get involved in this project, especially having expert help from Mr Beacham (Area Officer for Caerphilly Parks & Outdoor Facilities), Mr Beveridge (Caerphilly’s Community Environmental Awareness Officer), Mr Constantinou (parent and a Twyn School Governor), Mrs Bowley (a kind grandparent) and Mrs Butcher (local nature expert).
They were busy building new homes for birds, bats and bugs; planting native flowers to attract bees and butterflies as well as giving existing habitats a helping hand and I look forward to seeing the results of their hard work.” Keep Wales Tidy would like to thank B&Q for all their support, ensuring that the inaugural ‘Have a Wild Weekend for Wales’ has been a great success! For more information on improving biodiversity in your area or any other Keep Wales Tidy project please e-mail tidy.towns@keepwalestidy.org or visit our website: www.keepwalestidy.org.

Home Improvements Design Tips The Perfect Guestroom If you’re expecting visitors, help them feel welcome by preparing the guestroom in the manner of a five star hotel. Make the room look inviting, lived in and encourage them to feel at home. Make the room comfortable and relaxing to impart a feeling of friendliness and wellbeing as well as adding some luxury. Give the room a good airing before your guests arrive by throwing open the windows and letting fresh air circulate. Add some scented flowers as a cheerful welcome. Use beautiful bed covers and make sure there are plenty of pillows. Don’t forget to leave fresh bath towels, hand towels, face flannel and some pretty soap. Put out some extra items to make your guests feel even more special. Include shampoo, hair conditioner, bubble bath, toothpaste, cotton wool and anything else you may think could be useful. Add a bottle of water and glasses for the ‘hotel touch’. Make space in the wardrobe and drawers and leave them open so your guests don’t think they need to live out of their suitcase. Ensure there are plenty of hangers too. Leave out some books or magazines they may enjoy and show that you’ve really thought about them and their stay with you.

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

The strengths of British democracy One of the strengths of democracy in Britain is that it is based on constituency representation. This marks Britain out from so many other countries where people are represented by MPs who are elected through various forms of proportional representation. In Ireland, for example, Members of the Irish Parliament (the Dáil) are elected through the Single Transferable Vote and they are drawn from huge multi-member constituencies. In Britain we have First Past the Post, with every MP representing a single defined constituency. This makes a huge difference to the way our democracy functions. My normal working week means that from Monday to Thursday night I am in Westminster. Then for the rest of the week I am in the Caerphilly constituency, attending as many events as I can and holding regular advice surgeries. At my advice surgeries people come forward with a whole range of different problems and issues, from education to welfare benefits, from health to anti social behaviour and policing. A fair number of the issues which come to me have responsibility for them devolved to the Welsh Assembly. As Jeff Cuthbert AM and I have an excellent working relationship we have agreed that we both take up issues whether they are on devolved matters or not.
This makes sense because people are not concerned about if their issue comes under the Welsh Assembly or central government. Quite rightly, people want their problem addressed and hopefully resolved. Another key strength of our democratic system is that it allows for a clear link to be made between the local constituency and the Parliament in Westminster. If I have lots of people coming to my surgery or approaching me about a certain issue, then I know it is really important to them. A case in point is the current debate of how pensions are being handled by the Government. I have no doubt there is real concern among my constituents about how public sector pensions are going to be changed and their value depreciated. Most people accept that there must be change in the wake of the financial crisis, but people tell me that the Government have got it wrong when it comes to the detail of what is being proposed. This is but one example of many where the voice of local people can be heard at a national level.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery
The Dandy Picture the scene if you will; Beloved and I were making the most of the glorious spring weather we enjoyed back in April and opted for a romantic stroll around Caerphilly, I grabbed my camera and off we went. I usually take a camera with me where ever I go, just in case, it has become pat of my uniform – if ever you see a good looking young man in a cowboy hat, with a camera round his neck, and sniffing the roses, it is probably me. So we wandered around marvelling at how all of nature seemed to be bursting in song after the long cold winter, in the warm spring sunshine. There was one particular plant which seemed to be really thriving in the sun, initially producing a carpet of bright golden flowers … admittedly mostly all across peoples’ lawns; and then quickly followed by millions and millions of floating silvery seed heads – I refer of course to the much maligned but actually quite attractive Dandelion.
Now not a lot of people know this – said in a distinctive cockney accent – the Dandelion is a very versatile ‘weed’ in deed. It has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries – with all sorts of rumoured benefits. But more recently it is becoming increasingly popular for use in cooking (especially by the French, no less): you pick the small younger leaves, and can mix them in salads for a peppery Endive taste, or boil them up like spinach. It is also very good in drinks – Dandelion root coffee is on the increase, along with Dandelion beer, and wine … sounds like a heavy night to me!
As I crawled around on my hands and knees, trying to get a good photo of a Dandelion, I must admit I wondered why I was bothering to do this “as surely no-one would want to read a gardening column about the benefits of Dandelions in the garden”; and you dear reader have just proved me wrong, thank you for staying with me so far…
It is not only us humans who can feast on Dandelions – around 92 different types of insect are known to snack on them (including the endangered Bee population), so we would be doing our bit for the environment to allow a few Dandelions to thrive somewhere in our gardens.

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly
Can I begin by thanking all those that voted for me at the Assembly elections. I’m delighted to have been returned as the Assembly Member and be able to continue with my work on behalf of all people in this Constituency. Furthermore I’m delighted to have been made the Deputy Minister for Skills in the Welsh Government. I’ll be working closely with Leighton Andrews, the Minister for Education and Skills, to ensure that we identify the skill needs of the Welsh economy and, together with key partners, make the best arrangements possible to provide for the delivery of those skill needs. I’ll have to work also with the Minister for the Economy to make sure that there’s good “joined up” thinking. I’m absolutely delighted to be given this task. Many of you will know of my great interest in, and commitment to, vocational education and training. My job is to put our manifesto commitments into action so that we can have that smart, knowledgeable and flexible workforce that we need if Wales is to come out of recession successfully. But I don’t underestimate the task. Government can provide support to develop the right environment, but it’s very much down to employers (private and public) to work with us. The Welsh economy has been hit badly by the global recession and the public spending cuts imposed by the UK Government creates additional difficulties. The construction industry for example is under enormous pressure. Our budget for capital

expenditure (such as new buildings) has been cut by over 40%. So planning for growth is very important and requires good collaboration. One specific task that I’ve been given is to lead a review of the qualifications and courses that we offer in Wales. There have been complaints that some of those qualifications are not valued by employers. So I will work closely with employers and education institutions to see what changes we need to make so that young people are better aware of likely employment opportunities before courses are selected. However I don’t want my constituents to think that I’ll be spending all my time on my duties as Deputy Minister. Certainly not! I’ll continue to take great interest in local activities and support, to the best of my ability, individuals and voluntary groups that are campaigning for a better future.

Health Watch
Treating Sunburn Although the obvious way to prevent sunburn is to avoid going out in the heat of the day at all, it is both necessary to have a little sun for our health and a pleasure to feel those rays on your skin. Although most people will use a sun cream or lotion as a preventative measure, studies have shown that many people do not use enough sunscreen to provide adequate protection. If you do find that you have caught more sun than you intended, it’s important to treat your skin to minimise the damage. As with any burn the skin will be overheated, so the first thing to do is to find a way of cooling the area. Apply a flannel soaked in cold water or take a lukewarm shower or bath. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids as dehydration will only make matters worse and avoid alcohol. For mild sunburn using a moisturising

lotion which contains Aloe Vera or a specially formulated after-sun lotion will both cool and rehydrate the area, and relieve the feeling of tightness. For more intense sunburn ask your chemist about a hydrocortisone cream and take over the counter painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen to reduce your temperature. If your sunburn is severe, or it’s on a young child, you should ask for advice from your doctor or – in the worst cases – visit Accident and Emergency. If your sunburn is accompanied by other symptoms such a fever, dizziness or vomiting you could have sunstroke. It is essential in this case that your temperature is lowered and as a minimum you should seek advice from NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

Tongue in Cheek - Working from Home
Hazy Lazy Days by Ted Bruning When I was a teenager and my elder sister fled the nest, she left behind her portable typewriter. My head then being (as indeed it still is) cluttered with dreams of being a poet one day, I nicked it. A Byron it was (unlike me!), a tiny delicate thing in a hard green leather case that served me as a briefcase long after the Byron itself had tangled with entropy and lost. I had a vision, which with hindsight I think derived from a TV ad, of sitting outdoors on a beautiful day, cross-legged in the dappled shade of the orchard, carelessly churning out deathless verse by the ream. So I gave it a go. Bummer! I soon discovered two things. One: you can’t work sitting cross-legged on the ground with your typewriter on your knees. Every heavy-handed thump on the keyboard transmits a tiny shock that transforms your lap into a pulpy purple bruise in as long as it takes to bash out a sonnet; your calves cramp within seconds of getting settled; and leaning on the knobbly trunk of an old apple tree is much easier in imagination than it is in reality. Two: there is always a breeze, and even on the ostensibly stillest day it is plenty strong enough to blow away the onion-skin typing paper we used for carbon copies (the thinner the paper, the more you could squeeze into the roller of the typewriter) in the days before computers arrived. So there I was, bruised, cramped, knobblebacked, and chasing sheets of onion-skin all over the orchard. Sonnets? None. So I gave up and went back to working in the bedroom – which wasn’t half bad, actually, as my window looked out across the Severn to the dramatic wooded hump-back of the Breidden. But still, it wasn’t what I’d had in mind. Then suddenly, many years later, there were laptops, and the vision stirred once more. Not the original vision, of course: remembering the discomfort of trying to type cross-legged on the ground, vision version 2.0 involved the use of a garden table and chair; but at, least, no more chasing sheets of paper all over the great outdoors.
Only of course, as I soon discovered, on any day sunny enough to be worth being outside in, you can’t actually read a computer screen. I might have been composing iambs of Miltonian sonorousness (I’d moved on from sonnets and was into epics by then), but I had no way of knowing. I’m self-taught, you see: I type like Schroder played the piano in Peanuts, gaze fixed on the keyboard, hammering away like fury with two calloused index fingers. Only after the gush of creativity has subsided do I go over what I’ve written and correct all the myriad typos. Outdoors, in the bright sunshine, on a computer screen, you can’t do that. So I gave up and went back to working in the office/spare bedroom. It may very well be that these days you can buy a laptop with an outdoors-on-a-sunny-day compatible screen. But as I no longer possess a laptop of any description (I loathe them – they’re designed the wrong way round for an old-style hunt-and-peck typist like me), I think I shall bow to the inevitable and declare the vision officially dead. Only, as I write this, it’s gloriously sunny out and I’m stuck in here with the damned computer...

Mouth Watering Recipe
Perfect for a summer Sunday lunch this lamb roast has a delicious stuffing made with fresh mint, dried apricots and pine nuts. Simply serve with boiled and buttered new potatoes, steamed green beans and a spoonful of tangy redcurrant sauce.
Serve s4 Takes 1 hou r 30 m ins
25 g (1oz) butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 75 g (3 oz) fresh white breadcrumbs 25 g (1oz) pine nuts 8 no-need-to-soak dried apricots, chopped 2 tbsp beaten egg 2 tbsp fresh chopped mint Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 large lamb fillets 2 tbsp light olive oil 8 shallots, halved 1 ½ tbsp honey, warmed
Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas Mark 5. Heat the butter in a frying pan and gently fry the onion for 10 minutes until very soft, adding the garlic after 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the breadcrumbs, pine nuts and apricots. Leave to cool. Stir the egg and mint into the cooled mixture and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the lamb fillets on a chopping board and, using a sharp knife, make a deep cut along the length of each fillet (taking care not to cut all the way through). Open each fillet out and flatten slightly with a meat mallet or rolling pin. Spoon the stuffing down the centre of one fillet then place the second fillet on top to enclose the stuffing. Tie together at intervals with fine string. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and quickly fry the stuffed lamb over a high heat until just browned all over. Place in a shallow roasting tin. Cook the shallots for 1 minute in a pan of lightly salted boiling water. Drain well then place in the roasting tin around the lamb. Pour the remaining oil over the shallots. Roast the lamb and shallots for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and drizzle the warmed honey over the shallots. Roast for a further 10-15 minutes until the lamb is cooked to your liking. Cover the lamb and leave to rest in a warm place for 20 minutes before carving.
TOP TIP - If you’re not too keen on chilli then replace with a finely chopped spring onion. Deadline for our August issue: Thursday 21st July 2011 - Follow us on Twitter: @mylocalview

The Legal Eagle Attending Court when requested 50
Readers will recall only last month that it was headline news where two international rugby players arguably failed to turn up to Crown Court for on ongoing criminal matter. One question everyone wants to know is whether witnesses forming part of a ongoing criminal trial would have to turn up to court, and as to what would happen if you failed to attend for one reason or another. As a witness to a criminal matter there is what is called a citizens duty to turn up to court , if requested, and that if you failed to turn up to a scheduled court appointment without any explanation or evidence, then potentially a witness summons could be served upon you forcing you to attend court. If you then continue to ignore that summons as issued by the court then potentially you could he held by the Judge as in contempt of court, and thus potentially face penalties such as imprisonment, fine or otherwise as within the courts discretion.
It is the discretion of the court in how to deal with a case and furthermore as to what sanctions to impose by failure to attend as a witness. If you are unsure, and you are a witness to an incident and will in due course form part of a criminal matter/ trial, then you should seek advice from your local solicitor.

Neighbourhood Policing
A little bird told me there is something new in your neighbourhood … OWL is launched in Bedwas and Caerphilly! Residents in Bedwas and Caerphilly are being encouraged to join and set up local Neighbourhood Watch schemes via a new online service, called OWL (Online Watch Link). There are over 900 Neighbourhood Watch schemes now set up in Gwent which equates to close to 4000 households. The online system was successfully piloted in Monmouthshire from October of last year. With OWL, each Watch can manage themselves online with easy to use management and communication tools and allows users to choose the best format to receive messages– via phone, email, fax and text which can be sent to individual addresses, streets, watches, areas, wards, towns or watch schemes. When residents sign up to OWL they automatically become members of their local Neighbourhood Watch and can choose to sign up as a member or become a co-ordinator for their street. Residents should log on frequently to www.owl.co.uk to gain the most benefit from the initiative. Other benefits of the system include a “Fix my Street” application that allows watch members to easily report problems such as broken street lights to local councils, the most recent reports submitted to their council are displayed with a map showing the exact location of the problem. The system compliments and builds on existing crime maps provided by Gwent Police using the latest official crime data to provide a visual comparison of crime across districts putting local data into context. Lists of local contacts that may be required after an incident are also listed on the website. Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector for Bedwas and Caerphilly, Paul Staniforth says: “It’s a fantastic system that will help to make our communication with Neighbourhood Watch members more efficient. OWL offers a range of communication options to suit the needs of individual people reflecting the many ways that we now communicate using modern technology. Neighbourhood Watch has always been a
valuable ally in our drive to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and I encourage people to join and help us make their communities even safer. The Bedwas and Caerphilly Neighbourhood teams have been extremely busy this month in the new mobile police station promoting OWL – we’ve had a huge response so far.” Some advantages of being part of Neighbourhood Watch and receiving messages via OWL are: • Acts as a deterrent to burglars, car thieves and unscrupulous door to door callers. • Neighbours watching out for one another and working together to report suspicious activity. • More direct communication from the police about local incidents. • Advice on improving your own home security. • Support from your local Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator and your community police officer.
As you live in a registered Watch area we would like to invite you to register on OWL. Please log onto www.owl.co.uk for more information. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact Bedwas Neighbourhood Policing Team on 02920 857 454 or Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team on 02920 857 453. You can also follow us on twitter www.twitter. com/gwentpolice and find us on Facebook www. facebook.com/gwentpolice

a little bird told me there was something new in your neighbourhood... is launched in Caerphilly! OWL is an interactive Online Watch Link which helps communities prevent and detect crime, support one another and be more aware of what is going on in their area. It is an interactive system allowing two way communication between the police and local communities. As you live in a registered Watch area we would like to invite you to register on OWL. Messages, including crime alerts and timely crime prevention advice, are sent out in an instant, sometimes within half an hour of a crime occurring. The system allows messages to be received by telephone, fax, email, mobile phone, flyers or letter so people who do not have access to the internet do not miss out on OWL. There is no cost to sign up, it’s completely free. All personal information will be stored safely in a secure database and will not be shared with any third parties. Some of the advantages of being in a Neighbourhood Watch and receiving messages via OWL include: • Acts as a deterrent to burglars, car thieves and unscrupulous door to door callers • Neighbours watching out for one another and working together to report

Thought for the Month
Bless me! AS I may have mentioned before, I am a bit of a long running fan of the Irish Rock band, U2 I saw them in the infamous London Marquee club supporting some punk band in the late 1970s.
God is Passionate about Bono, and me, and you … and no degrees there. (If you are in any doubt about this, try reading John chapter 15, verse 13, and think on that)
I stopped jumping around for a moment and listened to the strange guitar sound, and even stranger singer, who seemed very keen to give everyone the benefit of his opinion – nothing has changed much there! The singer, Bono, became known as a bit of a ‘religious nut’ – a kind of a rock version of Cliff Richard – and I was intrigued to hear him say in a radio interview that actually NO, he didn’t see himself as ‘religious’. It took me another decade or 2 to understand what Bono meant. You see Bono, me, and possibly even GOD, aren’t really interested in religion … now please do not misunderstand me on this, I think I had better explain what I mean.
So Bono pursues more and more of God’s blessing in his life (he has asked loads of people around the world to ‘Bless him’ from ‘religious’ leaders such Billy Graham and Desmond Tutu, through to Frank Sinatra and Willie Nelson – he sees something in each of these people that inspires him, a gift from God, and asks them to pass it on to him in the form of a blessing; if you ask me, I think that somehow it has worked). What drives Bono isn’t religion – it’s more to do with relationship It’s not so much about discipline – it’s about desire (sounds like a good song to me)
Bono is passionate about God … and to some degree, so am I.
The result isn’t boring – it is blessings, and lots of them. Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net
