Hi all,

Fun Quiz

It’s October already - where has 2010 gone?

Page 22

Normally, the local events seem to taper off as we head into the Autumn but not this year.

Kids Page Page 24

As well as a healthy What’s On section we are also very happy to have Caerphilly Garden Centre advertising with us. It seems that Santa is already gearing up to entertain our kids with his fabulous Grotto based in the Garden Centre, and he also is putting in appearances in the Restaurant, hosting some Breakfast & Tea events for our kids! The Garden Centre are kicking off their Christmas season in style, in October - see ad for details.

We are also pleased to feature a community ad from Senghenydd Heritage Museum. I was extremely flattered to have been given a guided tour around the Museum earlier this month, tucked away in the Community Centre, and it had a very profound impact on me. The Museum is a reminder of the tragic Mining Disasters in 1901 and 1913.

Wayne David MP

If you get the chance, please visit the Museum. Not only is it a fascinating insight into the disasters but also the the lives of the local community. Karen, was my guide and she told me that it is a bit of a struggle getting local people into the Museum, so come on readers - it only takes an hour and it is important we remember the lives of the men (and boys) who died in the worst mining disaster in the UK!

Focus on a local business

Paul from My Local View recently visited David Morgan at his traditional Ironmongery store in Trethomas. Here, David explains his business and the changes he has seen in Caerphilly! When British Steel closed the East Moors works I used our redundancy payouts to buy the shop. Prior to this, I had no experience in the retail industry but thanks to the previous owner and some helpful reps, I was able to learn quickly.

We were pleasantly surprised in June when we were informed that we had won the “They’re the Business” award back by The South Wales Echo and the Park Inn, Cardiff for May 2010. We were invited to the lunch at The Park Inn where we were presented with a cut glass bowl. With thanks to Tom Williams for the nomination and to all our customer for their support. Lots of new faces have been seen in the shop recently, and we look forward to seeing more Local View readers in the coming months. We stock many hard to come by items as well as the sort of products you would expect to find in an Ironmonger’s shop.

DAVID MORGAN

IRONMONGER AND TOOL MERCHANT

Caerphilly’s oldest established Ironmongers Established 1912 (Current Owner Since 1978)

Once I realised that I was going to to able to earn a living from the shop it became a very pleasant way to work. One of the best parts of being a shopkeeper is that you meet so many different types of people.

We stock; Ironmongery, Tools, Hardware, Bicycle spares, Paints, Diy, Electrical, Gardening, Security etc.

If I have the stock to solve customers problems then I have made them happy which in turm pleases me. There have been many changes since I brought the shop, such as the closure of many traditional industries including Bedwas Colliery, British Benzol’s Coke Ovens, Coates Paint Works to name a few.

MOST CALOR BOTTLES STOCKED

This has led to the area becoming more of a domitory town. Although Caerphilly the changed, I have been able to change with the times, by listening to my customers needs.

We stock coal shovels, firebaskets and firebricks etc

Working from home Hooray for the holidays!

by Ted Bruning One good thing about working from home: it’s certainly peaceful. Too peaceful, sometimes. On the odd occasion, I’ve been woken by the rattle of the real worker’s key in the front door and had to jump to attention and desperately try to look busy to escape being caught, quite literally, napping. These alarms notwithstanding, the fact that there aren’t phones ceaselessly ringing and co-workers constantly demanding attention does make it easier to get down to some proper grafting, especially if your work is research-based. Sometimes I’m so studious my office is like the reading room at the British Library. Only without all the books, obviously. That’s when the kids are at school. But what with Christmas, Easter, and Summer holidays, half term breaks, staff training days, and “inset days” (which is when the teachers all migrate to the pub for the day, but who can blame them?), the little perishers hardly seem to be at school at all. They’re not especially noisy, bless ‘em, but the mere fact of their presence changes the whole house from a place of work to a place of music, cooking, daytime TV, conversation, footsteps on the stairs, doors opening and closing, things being dropped, loos flushing – they can’t help it; they’re only being; I just wish that they’d be somewhere else. Now that they’re older and doing exams, to the horror of holidays we have to add the perplexing business of study leave. I mean, what do they want leave to study for? Aren’t they supposed to be studying at school? And if they don’t study at school, they certainly don’t study at home. Or not obviously, anyway. There are, true, intermittent periods when they sequester themselves in their rooms and a blessed Trappist hush descends. Of course, for most of that time they’re not revising at all: they’re on Facebook, ipods stuck deep into their semicircular canals. But at least they’re quiet.

But even when they are actually revising, their friends aren’t. Most of their friends regard A levels as a stupid idea and can’t seem to accept that there might be an opposing point of view. And since there appear to be no jobs for said friends – or at least, no jobs they’re willing to do – they’re constantly looming at the door, blocking out the sunlight and trying to tempt my poor innocents with the prospect of a shared two-litre bottle of cider at the recreation ground. It always takes ages to persuade them that no, the kids haven’t gone all posh and no, they don’t think they’re too good for their friends these days and – anyway, by the time they’ve been diplomatically dismissed, the rhythm of work is broken for good. This is also the time when Dad’s Taxi (and Mum’s Taxi too, it has to be said) is at its busiest. Town, where all life worth living is to be found, is seven miles away, and the last bus departed for good at about the same time, as I recall, that Council Tax that used to pay for the buses rose sharply. Several trips a day are therefore required. But that’s good. At least it means that there are interludes of peace between “Dad, can you give us a lift into town?” and “Dad, can you pick us up from town?” They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. And the more my darling little snugglebunnies are absent, the fonder of them I am.

Caerphilly events update

Bargoed Big Screen was Shrek-tastic! Over 1,000 people attended the Bargoed Big Screen in September. The fantastic cinema event returned to Bargoed in September with the showing of the popular Dream Works animation Shrek 4- Forever After. It was a great night for cinema and Shrek fans alike attracting over a 1,200 visitors to Hanbury Road Car Park, Bargoed. We were really lucky with the weather as rain and wind threatened throughout the week. Entry to the event was free and visitors brought their own picnic, blanket and chair and relaxed, sat back and enjoyed the open-air cinema experience in Bargoed. These evenings have always provided great entertainment for the whole family and the next event will be no different.

Llancaiach Fawr Manor to host International Cider Festival

Llancaiach Fawr Manor is to host a 3 day international Cider Festival in 2011. The event, a first at Llancaiach Fawr, will house 5 themed tents with cider producers from Wales, England, Spain, France and Austria present during the three days. The event will also have various entertainment and music. More details for the event will follow, visit www.llancaiachfawr.co.uk closer to the date.

‘Fungus Foray at Cwmcarn Forest this autumn’ Don’t forget we have a full events programme throughout the autumn at our attractions, namely; Llancaiach Fawr Manor, Cwmcarn Forest and The Winding House. Details can be found on our website www.caerphilly.gov.uk/events

Summer is over, now full steam ahead for Christmas!

The events team is now looking forward to a busy few months ahead with 3 themed Christmas Markets to organise. Preparations are now well underway for the Blackwood Dickensian Christmas Market on 4th & 5th December, the Caerphilly Medieval Christmas Fayre on 11th & 12th December and the Olde Bargoed Christmas Market on 18th December . Stalls, entertainment and music have already been booked. We have already received a huge interest from a number of craft, charity and food stall applications from all over the country. For more information, call our Visitor Centre on 029 2088 0011.

October is jam-packed with autumnal events at Cwmcarn Forest with ‘Fungus Foray’ (yes that’s hunting for fungi in the forest!), a ‘tree watch walk’ to admire the fascinating changing colour of the trees in the forest, fatball making, Halloween pottery and decorations workshops, storytelling and spooky tales. Join the Junior Archaeologists once a month at The Winding House in New Tredegar, to find out more about how to ‘dig up’ the past! Go along to explore archaeology through crafts, activities, visits and fascinating talks. Meet real archaeologists, visit dig sites and try to recreate archaeological find. Forthcoming meetings for 8 to 16 year olds, are being held on 16th October and 20th November, call 01443 822666 to book a place (booking essential). Until next time, have a fantastic autumn and just to frighten you… Christmas is only 85 days away at the time of writing. If you’ve ever felt like you’re aimlessly drifting through life, then likely you’ve felt as if it’s too difficult to change. Over the next three months I’ll be giving Local View readers some simple tips to help you start making changes in your life.

Top 3 Tips to Change How you Feel Right Now 1. Stretch and SmileÉ Stand up right now Ð quickly Ð stand tall, pull your shoulders back, push your chest out, tilt your head back and smile. Know that sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy. Why not go all out and start laughing Ð for no reason in particularÉ try it, itÕs fun! 2. Remember a time when you felt really happy Ð remember it in as much detail as you can. Close your eyes for a moment and recall exactly what you were doing, who you were with, what you could see and hear, and of course what you were feeling.

3. Make a list of all your achievements Ð no matter how small, donÕt judge them, just list them. Realise what an incredible thing it is to be a human beingÉ you can speak English, you can walk tall. Be proud of who you are and what youÕve achieved. Realise for a moment the truth that if you want to make a change your first step is to make a change. Crossways Fun Day

Community Fair was a fun day for all! Tesco at Crossways Caerphilly held a family friendly fun day on Sunday 12th September. Hundreds of customers came along to join in and get involved. The fair was opened by the Mayor of Caerphilly, and was host to a wide range of local suppliers, charities and community groups, who were showing everyone what they do, and giving people the chance to help with good causes. We had lots of people sign up to get involved and volunteer. Kath Dawson - community champion at the storesaid “It was a great day out for everyone, and even the weather was kind! There were lots of things to do, from facepainting to learning circus tricks and cheerleading! The music was provided by the amazing VOICE FM, and refreshments were given out all day free of charge - including a generous donation by the Dominos Pizza Crew!” Everyone learned a little more about their community, and what they can get involved with themselves, so big thanks to all who attended, and all who volunteered their time on the day!

Tywn School

Business & education working together! Business and education came together at The Twyn School over the summer holidays and completely transformed the garden and play space. Pricewaterhousecoopers and The Friends of The Twyn hatched plans to completely repaint and rejuvenate the gardens and play equipment at the School. Sian Carter, Chairperson for Friends of The Twyn School said “We are overwhelmed with the work that PWC completed on the Community Day and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them over the coming months”.

Head teacher Isobel Davies said “All too often we think communities are dysfunctional but this is real proof that generosity abounds. The team of people played and worked together and each benefitted from the day. Our huge thanks to everyone for making The Twyn School such a happy place to learn”

63 volunteers from PWC gave their time to plant, prune and paint their way through the school grounds. The children’s play areas took on new shapes and designs as bright colours revitalised the play furniture. The gardens were restored to life with generous plant donations from B&Q, Caerphilly Garden Centre and Homebase. Tracey Bentham, Head of Tax for PwC’s West Region comments, “Through our work with Twyn School, PwC is delighted to be able to give back to some of the communities where we operate. Our community work is a very fulfilling and worthwhile role for our people at PwC”.

Neighbourhood Policing

POLICE PLAN PATROLS FOR HALLOWEEN AND BONFIRE NIGHT Neighbourhood Officers in Bedwas and Caerphilly are running a number of initiatives over the next month to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Halloween and Bonfire Night. Officers will be conducting patrols in known problem areas for anti-social behaviour and will be confiscating any illegal fireworks, eggs, flour or alcohol. The Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be working with local shops to encourage them not to sell eggs or flour to anyone under the age of 18. This is being echoed in posters that are being put up to remind people that ‘Eggs have many uses, throwing isn’t one of them’.

whole family. But for some, such as the elderly and vulnerable members of our communities, it can be an intimidating time, especially if they have unknown and unwelcome callers at their doors. By using the pumpkin posters, they can make sure that their wishes are known to callers.” To report any incidents of anti-social behaviour, please contact Gwent Police on 101. In an emergency, dial 999.

The successful pumpkin campaign is also returning this year. Residents who do not want to be disturbed can put up a pumpkin poster in their window or door asking for no callers. The pumpkin posters can be downloaded and printed off from the Gwent Police website www. gwent.police.uk. Wayne David MP

More powers for the Welsh Assembly Carwyn Jones, the First Minister of the Welsh Assembly Government, has written to the Secretary of State for Wales, indicating that the Referendum on more powers for the Welsh Assembly should be held on 3 March next year. It seems likely that this date will be agreed. The question on the ballot paper in the referendum will be whether the Welsh Assembly should have the power to make laws in certain areas. At the moment, the Welsh Assembly is only a secondary legislative body, with primary law making power resting exclusively in Westminster. For the Assembly to be able to make its own laws it has to ‘request’ power from Parliament. As the Wales Office Minister in the last government, it was my job to steer through the House of Commons the ‘requests’ from the Welsh Assembly Government for the ability to make laws. During my 18 months as a Minister, I was able to see through Legislative Competence Orders (LCOs) regarding the Welsh language, mental health, red meat, the environment and LCOs in quite a few other areas. If there is a ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum, it would mean that the Assembly would no longer have to go to Westminster to request the power to make laws on a certain subject; it would be able to simply get on

and make the law itself. I think this would be much more straightforward and more cost effective. At the moment, requests for law making powers are ‘scrutinised’ by both Assembly Members and Members of Parliament in separate Committees at either end of the M4. Over the past couple of years, the Welsh Assembly has become more experienced in being able to scrutinise draft laws very effectively. The time has now come for the Assembly to be able to make its own laws as is currently the case in Scotland. I hope that there will be a good turn-out for the referendum. Giving more powers to the Welsh Assembly will not fuel Welsh nationalism, nor will it undermine the unity of the United Kingdom. But it will bring power closer to the people and enhance democracy.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Tiptoe through the Tulips I do love Spring Flowering bulbs, especially Daffodils, and if I can be Frank with you for a moment – I normally prefer to just be Roger, but bear with me! I fear I may have overlooked the thousands of different varieties of Tulips which are available to us to create a Rainbow of spring colours. That is the main benefit of Tulips, compared to the Daffodils; they are available in just about every colour you could ask for, from pure white right through to deep dark black.

Look out for varieties such as ‘Red riding hood’ which as well as having dwarf and vivid flowers also has lovely markings on the leaves which gives you the ‘double whammy’ of attractive foliage long before the flowers appear.

October is the best time to plant Tulips, with all the Garden Centres and Nurseries offering dozens of different types. I prefer to look for shorter stemmed varieties, which are less inclined to get knocked around by spring winds, and look great in tubs and baskets at a time of the year when it is still too cold at night to put out your summer bedding plants – so tulips are a great gap filler in your ‘calendar of colour’ in the garden.

Health Watch Snorely Not! 42

By Lorraine Mace

Are you one of the 45% of adults who snore or one of the 55% who lie awake listening for that dreadful noise and trying not to think murderous thoughts? Whichever category you fall into, this article could help you to deal with the problem. Before moving on to the possible cures and workarounds, let’s look at what causes people to snore. There are three main reasons. The first is caused by a vibration of the uvula and soft palate. The second is a condition called sleep apnea. The third is caused by an area of skin in the throat that blocks the air passage. There are many remedies available, ranging from devices such as mouthpieces, chin straps and snoring pillows through to exercises which can help to prevent snoring. In the interests of maintaining marital harmony and preventing partners from murdering each other in the early morning hours, I’ve listed below some of the remedies which seem to be the most effective. The basics If you are the problem snorer, it’s advisable to cut out alcohol and drugs of any kind (other than for medicinal purposes) for at least two hours going to sleep. All alcohol, whether it’s wine, beer or spirits just before going to bed can relax the soft tissue which causes snoring. Any drug that causes muscles to relax could also cause snoring. Foods to avoid Certain dairy products increase mucous production in some people. This can restrict the airway and cause snoring. In addition to this, wheat, fatty or processed foods can have the same effect. Weighty matters Being overweight increases the chances of someone snoring. The heavier you are, the heavier your body mass. This results in a bulkier neck which often causes the throat to struggle to accommodate the extra tissue – thus leading to problems with breathing.

Change of sleeping posture An alternative to the snoring pillow can be achieved by stitching a tennis ball to the back of your pyjama top or a sleep tee-shirt. This will cause you to sleep on your side because rolling onto your back will be uncomfortable. Realigning your body so that your tongue and jaw are kept from causing a blockage on the air passage can also help to prevent snoring. If you can sleep on your stomach that will help as that posture reduces pressure on the airways. Alternatively, if you can elevate your bed to an angle of 30 degrees it could be beneficial as this is known to lessen the chances of the soft tissue in the throat collapsing. Exercises Tongue exercises could help. Try sticking your tongue out and stretching it a little more each day. Or stick out your tongue and try to touch your chin. If none of the above options help, the snorer in the family should seek medical advice or sleep in the car.

Snoring Pillow A snoring pillow is designed in such a way that the user will be forced into sleeping on his or her side instead of on their back. Deadline for our November issue is Weds 20th October at 10am

The month of October

October is, of course, the month when both of my children, two of my three sisters, and one of my many nieces all have their birthdays – which would make it the second most expensive month in my calendar after December if I wasn’t too mean to buy them all presents. To most people, though, the month’s big date is of course, October 31st, which is the evening when totally strange kids wearing hired ghoul and vampire costumes seem to believe it’s just fine to knock on your door demanding sweets. I refer, of course, to Hallowe’en, that curious festival that seems to commemorate nothing more notable than the ingenuity of Hollywood make-up artists and costume designers. And it is indeed a remarkable feature of Hallowe’en that while its roots are – or are claimed to be – lost in the proverbial mists of time, its attributes are entirely modern. It is also unusual for a major festival in that it has almost no connection to the Christian liturgical calendar whatever other than the fact that October 31st is the feast of St Wolfgang of Regensburg, which has very little significance outside, presumably, Regensburg. Supposedly, the origins of Hallowe’en lie in an ancient Celtic festival, Samhain, pronounced “soo-wain” or however else you like it. This marked the end of the Season of Light and the beginning of the Season of Darkness. This was also a time when the barrier between this world and the next weakened, letting through spirits both benign and mischievous. People would dress up in the ancient Celtic equivalent of ghoul and vampire costumes to disguise themselves as mischievous spirits in the hope that the real spirits would be fooled into thinking hey, this guy’s one of us. Let’s leave him alone. How anybody can assert this stuff as truthful with any degree of certainty I don’t know, since the ancient Celts were illiterate and left no record of what they got up to, religion-wise, let alone on what date. But it’s true that a lot of world religions have fire festivals at roughly this time of year – Diwali and Hannukkah, for example – so let’s not be churlish and let’s give the folklorists the benefit of the doubt.

Having said that, mind, the date of All Saints (or All Hallows) wasn’t officially fixed until 835, and the word Hallowe’en didn’t enter the English language until 1556, so maybe the Celt stuff is all baloney after all. Whatever the truth of the festival’s dim and distant origins, most of the bits and pieces we associate with it now can be placed firmly in modern times. Pumpkin masks and candles, for instance, date to mid-19th century America. Trick or treating was actually invented in Philadelphia in 1950 and proved so popular with confectionery-hungry children that it rapidly took the world by storm. Sadly, perhaps, it displaced a much more pleasant custom known as guising, when kids would dress up and go from house to house, as they still do, but instead of intimidating you into parting with jelly babies they would perform a little act or “trick”—a song, maybe, or a spot of folk dance, or a display of stunt motorcycling – for a small reward. Bring back guising, I say. A gang of seven-year-olds in gorilla costumes making a human pyramid, or toddlers dressed as Dracula juggling with kitchen knives – now that I would pay good jelly babies to see.

The Alpha Course

This Autumn, members of Gateway Church will be hosting The Alpha Course. It is an opportunity to explore the Christian Faith in a relaxed manner over thought provoking weekly sessions. Roger Crookes explains. If I was to try and summarise the Alpha course in just a few words they would be • Friendship • Fun • Food • Thought provoking I have been on the course twice now; and have found the mixture of age groups, religious backgrounds (some ‘church goers’ – some not) and subject matters, always make for an interesting and enjoyable evening. Each weekly evening would typically last about 2 hours. Starting with the all important food, followed by a cuppa while watching a DVD for about 30-45 minutes….and then the fun starts! In a very relaxed atmosphere ….we talk. A chairperson helps get the conversations and questions flowing, with some key questions, and somehow, we often run out of time !

No-one is compelled to talk, but you can ask whatever you like – and it is great to listen to the variety of answers and thoughts from the rest of the group. I think that is one of the keys to the success of ‘Alpha’, compared to a traditional church service – instead of a whole bunch of people sat listening to the ‘preacher’ without being able to ask those burning questions, Alpha is very much an open discussion. There are so many mysteries around the subject of Church, God and Christianity, all those important questions and concerns need to be aired and discussed. So often, I found that other people asked the very question that I had been pondering …always nice to know that I am not only one who thinks like that! Enough from me; please see the advert below for more info regarding the next Alpha course running this Autumn in Caerphilly …maybe I’ll see you there….

Don’t stereotype Us!

Every October is a time of great angst for many adults in the community and a time of great excitement for the youngsters. The thing that causes this range of emotions is Halloween. Halloween or All Hallows Eve is a celebration from pagan traditions in which spirits and ghouls arise from the dead, yet the fear for people in the community is real and alive. It is now generally assumed that Halloween is an opportunity for young people to take advantage and play pranks on the community, especially the older generation.

So if you do go trick or treating, ensure that the person does not have a sign displayed that they don’t wish to have any callers.

However this is not the case. Many people stereotype that all youngsters are adamant to cause havoc yet most teenagers are not interested in being a menace to the community. They would rather have fun at a pre-arranged party rather than harass the citizens for sweets etc. This stigma that is attached to the youngsters every October is unfair and unjust for the majority that don’t even bother with the tradition.

Furthermore, if the home owner refuses to give any treats or asks you to move away, respect their wishes and leave promptly. Lastly, if you do want something to do on Halloween, don’t wander the streets, there are loads of community Halloween parties that you can attend. Hopefully, if the above is considered, then we can make Halloween an enjoyable festival for the next generation of younger children and ultimately remove the stereotypical view that is perceived of teenagers at Halloween.

True, a small minority of youngsters do cause trouble for some people on 31st October but if we all follow these simple rules then there will be no problems on Halloween and hopefully we can remove this stigma that has been stamped across the whole population of young people these days.

Have a fun, safe Halloween this year! Geraint Thomas

Recipe of the month These spicy noodles are packed with classic Thai flavourings – fragrant lemon grass, fiery hot chilli pepper and pungent root ginger. With meaty king prawns and crunchy vegetables they make a great healthy supper on the table in under 30 mins! Serves 4 Ready in 25 mins

Thai Prawn Noodles 250g packet medium rice noodles 2 tbsp sesame oil 1 red pepper, deseeded 1 yellow pepper, deseeded 6 spring onions, trimmed ½ red chilli pepper, deseeded 1 stalk lemon grass 2cm (1in) piece root ginger, peeled 300g (10oz) raw king prawns 4 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander stalks Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

1. Cook the rice noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well and rinse under cold running water. Add a few drops of the sesame oil to the noodles and toss them gently to coat in the oil. Set aside. 2. Thinly slice the red and yellow peppers and the spring onions. Finely chop the chilli and lemon grass and grate the root ginger. Heat 2 tsp of the sesame seed oil in a large frying pan. 3. Add the prawns and half the chilli, lemon grass and ginger to the pan and stir-fry for 2-3 mins until prawns start to turn pink. Add the peppers and spring onions and continue stir-frying over a high heat for a further 1-2 mins until the prawns are completely pink and cooked through. 4. Add the rice noodles to the pan and toss well to mix. Whisk the remaining chilli, lemon grass, ginger and oil with the lime juice, soy sauce, sugar and coriander stalks. Pour over the noodles and heat through for a further 1-2 mins. 5. Season the noodles to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve piled into warmed bowls garnished with coriander leaves.

Thought for the Month

Getting older! As I write I am enjoying the last day of my ‘forties’, yep tomorrow there will be a 5 in entirely the wrong place! If I am honest I have struggled with this particular milestone, more than previous ones: for someone who is convinced that he is still in his twenties, and somehow is exempt from the ageing process, this half century reminder has been a bit of a shock! The thing is, our generation is repeatedly told that youth is to be desired and valued, and growing old is to be avoided at all costs – just have a look at any magazine and see who the photos are of and whose ‘wisdom’ is being quoted. It was so refreshing to read an interview with Sir Michael Caine recently; he wasn’t trying to say something outrageous to get his ‘ratings’ up – he was just honest about his struggles and new achievements in his career in the film industry which celebrates and promotes youth and good looks…and he had found out that there are new opportunities for him. The increase in years can mean an increase in value, and a different type of beauty.

Beloved and I met a couple on Holiday in Guernsey recently, who were frankly an inspiration. He was 91 and she was a couple of years younger, and they were catching local buses around the island and then walking a mile or more up and down steep lanes to the beaches and cafes. They seemed so at ease with life, each other, and the people they met. As they shared some of their stories with us, I began to see a different and much longer lasting kind of beauty radiating out of their wise smiles. This was a beauty that was more than skin deep; and is what I aspire to … as I have long ago given up trying to achieve that other sort of beauty!

Your rights: Refunds There always appears to be sales in retail outlets these days whatever time of the year but what is your position when you wish to return goods and seek a refund? Individual outlets will have their own returns policy but in addition you also have statutory rights. Goods that are not fit for their purpose or not of satisfactory quality can be returned and exchanged for a full refund provided this is done within a reasonable period of time. If however you purchase an item that does not subsequently suit your requirements you do not have an automatic right to be able to return that item. Of course these days shopping on line or mail order is becoming more and more popular. In these circumstances separate regulations apply as you have a cooling off period of seven days during which time you can cancel your order and return the goods.

If you are purchasing an item as a present most shops offer the facility of a gift receipt which enables the recipient to return the item to the store. As indicated above individual outlets often have their own return policies which they must abide by. Often most people do not realise however that even if you are buying in the sales you still have the same rights as when you are buying full priced items.

Local talent shines on the mic

Cheryl Roberts originally from Bristol, now living in Caerphilly has been given the big thumbs up by judges at the Open Mic UK auditions. Along with the other most impressive acts, Cheryl Roberts has made it through to the Regional Finals and will now be performing at the live stages of Open Mic UK 2010. Open Mic UK 2010 is the exciting national talent competition which searches for the UK’s best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material. One contestant who has evidently caught the judge’s eye is local talent Cheryl Roberts, now competing for a place in the National Final at the O2 in London and the chance to grab a break through recording contract. Thousands of hopefuls entered nationwide and hundreds of auditionees queued patiently on the day for their turn to impress the judges. But it was Cheryl Roberts that wowed the panel and has now been given an opportunity to prove that they are the best on the Mic in the region. Those who made it through the audition stage will now take part in a live Regional head to head

battle alongside the best talent in their area. They’ll be performing in front of hundreds of audience members and a professional judging panel to win a place at the National Grand Final. Chris Grayston head of A&R at Future Music comments “We are searching for an act that not only has the live ability to impress an audience, industry judges and A&R associates, but an act that has the potential to become a professional recording artist. The standard was high last year and this year looks set to be even better.”

The competition is divided into age categories; Under 18, 18-25 and 25 and over; all types of singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer/songwriters are invited to enter Open Mic UK. There’s over £50, 000 in prizes up for grabs this year and the overall winner of Open Mic UK 2010 will be offered a recording contract, with up to £30, 000 investment! They’ll also have the opportunity to tour across the UK. There are plenty of development opportunities available to acts taking part courtesy of ICMP, who will be offering songwriting courses and master classes throughout the competition. The latter stages of the competition will also provide acts with the opportunity

Deadline for our November issue is Weds 20th October at 10am

to impress many guests from record labels, agencies and the entertainment industry as well as judges from National Radio, BBC Introducing and Regional Press. The winners will not only get to perform on stage at the 02, but they will be thrust into the media spotlight through television, radio and print media and all winners will be invited on the Open Mic UK Tour, which boasts 100 gigs across the country. For more information go to the website www.openmicuk.co.uk Or better still come down to the Coal Exchange, Cardiff on Sunday 24th October at 8pm and support Cheryl performing. You can purchase tickets from the website www.openmicuk.co.uk or on the door subject to availability or from cherylroberts1978@hotmail.com
