Scorching Spring with threats of hosepipe bans, followed by a wet summer - there is a thunder storm going on above me as I write this note and Monty the world’s wimpiest dog is sat on my feet.

That can only mean one thing! Caerphilly is going to be snowbound in December and we adopt the bulldog spirit seen last year and dig ourselves out of our streets to ensure we can stock up on essentials like Beer, Wine and more Beer. So spare a thought for our hard pressed local business owners, some of whom struggled for months to get back on their feet financially after the Snow of 2011 - lots of great businesses are featured in this month’s mag, some new faces too, all waiting to be of service to you!

Jeff Cuthbert

I am gearing myself up for a busy Christmas season (my favourite time of year) as the community events are always fun and of course festive. I am looking forward to attending some events - assuming the trusted dog gets off my feet.

Community News: Local Fundraisers

Penyrheol Bowl for Velindre On Sunday 7th August 2011, Penyrheol Bowls Club held a Charity Day to raise funds for Velindre Hospital. Some 96 bowlers from all over South Wales entered the competition and these played all day in atrocious weather conditions. In the evening there was a concert in the adjoining Penyrheol Community Centre. In total the sum of £1792.88 was raised for the hospital. This was the third time, the competition has been held and each year so far we have raised more than the previous year’s total.

The Mayor of Caerphilly Country Borough Council, Councillor Vera Jenkins attended and gave out prizes to those who were successful throughout the competition. The club would like to thank all those who supported the event by donating raffle prizes and food for meals throughout the day. Anyone interested in taking up bowls is always welcome at Penyrheol and hopefully we may see some new faces at the start of next season to help us continue our charity fundraising events.

Caerphilly Rotary Club at Proms in the Park The Rotary Club of Caerphilly has been granted a collection licence to collect in the streets & roads adjacent to the concert venue. The charity to benefit from our collection.... undetaken by club members in association with members from other local Rotary clubs ... is SHELTER BOX. Shelter Boxes are emergency containers .. with a ten person tent , cooking equipment + tools.... that are quickly sent across the world when disaster strikes Flood, famine , earthquake, volcanic eruptions etc.

These boxes are very often ... the first aid relief equipment arriving in disaster zones ... as they are flown out .. often within hours of the disaster striking !

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

If music be the food of love.... Denis Healey once famously commented that politicians ought to have a ‘hinterland’, by which he meant that politicians should have interests outside of politics. To some people this may seem a very obvious statement because most people have plenty of interests outside of their ‘work’. But, politics is a different profession. It is not a normal 9 to 5 job. In fact, for a professional politician, it can become an all-embracing way of life which can, if you’re not careful, take over your life completely.

Music, therefore, gives me a real interest outside of politics and this allows me, I hope, not to become a political obsessive. As well as helping to preserve my own sanity, music also helps me to see things in perspective and gives me a wider understanding of people’s lives.

It is important to have a dividing line between being conscientious and allowing oneself enough space to pursue interests outside of politics. One of my interests is classical music and, in particular, playing the oboe. When I was at school I toyed with the idea of trying to become a professional oboist. But, I realised in time that, although I was pretty good in youth orchestra terms, I would struggle to get into a profession orchestra. Nevertheless, my interest in the oboe has continued and every now and again I play the oboe, after a great deal of practise, at various charity concerts both in the constituency and, occasionally, further afield.

Denis Healey was right. And, if we look at most of the big political figures of our time they all had real interests way beyond politics. The names of Michael Foot and Edward Heath spring to mind; the former because of his great literary knowledge and his impressive writing, and the latter because of his real in-depth knowledge and understanding of, yes, music.

Caerphilly events update Hi everyone,

For online ticket sales and more information on the event visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk/proms

In what seems like a distant memory, the Big Cheese Festival rests peacefully for another year! Yet it is only a month ago that our annual event was the office frenzy and there was all work no play. We are now all refreshed having had a nice break from the chaos, taking a week off with the family to recuperate from the busy month of July. Now it’s back to work for the excitement of the new events that we have the privilege of being involved in this year.

Hot on the heels of the BBC Proms in the Park we will have a surge of cyclists pedalling their way into the county borough as we host the fourth stage of the Tour of Britain event on Wednesday 14th September. Stage four of the event will see the cyclists race down the length of Wales from Welshpool to Caerphilly.

No post event blues for our office this year, which is great, as we move swiftly onto the planning of the BBC Proms in the Park and Tour Of Britain events. September can often be a month to reflect upon the summer months and start the planning of the Christmas events programme, however this year we have two new events to manage.

The BBC Proms in the Park is nearly here with some fantastic performances on offer. Forget a Saturday night in with the family watching the X Factor; make BBC Proms in the Park your Saturday night out. With popular hits from Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter and other magic and wizardry themed music, this event is sure to be a hit for the whole family. On 10th September come along and watch this magnificent event with friends and family, bring your blankets and picnic’s or hire a deckchair and treat yourself to a pork roll! – Be part of this first time prestigious event for Caerphilly County Borough. There will also be a fireworks display to end the evening. Tickets are on sale at Caerphilly Visitor Centre, call 029 2088 0011.

The competitors will head into Caerphilly and face the gruelling climb to the top of Caerphilly mountain before coming back down into the town for the stage finale at Caerphilly Castle. Come to Caerphilly and join in the celebrations as some of the best cyclists speed into town. Visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk for full information. We would like to take this opportunity to ask any event organisers who have events taking place in 2011 or 2012 to send in information about their event so that we can help to promote it.

As well as the events organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council there are lots of events taking place in the area organised by local community groups and societies and we want to help promote these too. Email events@caerphilly.gov.uk for an events proforma or visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk and download the form from here. I’ll catch up with you in October now when I can start updating you on what will be coming up over the winter months.

Are you ready for the Are you ready the Welsh carrier bagfor charge?

Welsh carrier bag charge?

The Welsh Government wants to drastically reduce the number of bags given away in Wales. So from 1 October 2011, you’ll pay at least 5 p for all single use carrier bags. The carrier bag charge will apply in all shops including clothes stores, take away food outlets and restaurants, corner shops and market stalls. It will also apply when you have goods delivered in Wales, such as dot.com groceries.

You can avoid the charge by taking your own bags shopping with you. What bags are included in the charge? All single use carrier bags are included in the charge. This includes bags made of plastic, paper and degradable material. What bags are not included in the charge? Only bags used in certain circumstances, such as ones used for unpackaged food like meat, vegetables or poultry are exempt. Bags used to carry free prescriptions or other items which are supplied free on the NHS are not included in the charge. Any bags that are intended to be reused for example ‘bags for life’ and those made from cloth, jute, or cotton are also not included in the charge. Why take action on carrier bags? During 2009-10, in Wales we took home an estimated 350 million carrier bags from the major supermarkets alone. Bags are bad for the environment as they are a waste of resources, create litter and harm wildlife. For more information you can visit www.carrierbagchargewales.gov.uk email: carrierbagcharge@wales.gsi.gov.uk or Phone 02920 826230

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Community Gardens

Back in July this year beloved and I went ‘up north’ to the RHS Tatton park flower show; it was very good, but what got me all fired up was what I saw in the little town of Holmes Chapel, where we stayed for a couple of nights. I was amazed to see Tubs and borders around the town centre planted not with flowers but with fresh and tasty looking vegetables, with signs saying ‘Food to share - please pick me!’. I got talking to some families who were literally gardening on their high street, and was inspired by their generous and enthusiastic attitude. This is the first year of their plan to get the community involved in growing fresh vegetables – in the community for the community – and to providing a fresh experience of growing, eating local produce and using plants as a means to developing a sense of open community and friendship – it was brilliant! So, of course, my next thought was “Could we do this in Caerphilly?”

With the likes of Jamie Oliver preaching the gospel of fresh healthy local produce, but with gardens getting smaller, waiting lists for allotments there is a lot of untapped interest in ‘growing your own’. Combine that with the rising costs, and shrinking resources, for local authorities and businesses to manage their ‘green spaces’…and hey presto – we have an opportunity! So people of Caerphilly, and local view land, do you fancy converting some rundown green spaces in to fruit, veg and herb gardens along with other families near where you live? There are towns doing this all over the UK (try typing in community vegetable gardens on the internet). Some such as Todmorden in Yorkshire have made a real impact on the local lifestyle and environment. If you would be interested in talking about it – no more than that at this stage – please contact me to register your interest, and we can see how we get something started in our town.

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly

In 1968 I was elected as the Chair of the Young Socialists in Wales (the Youth Wing of the Labour Party at that time). I held that position for four years. It marked the beginning of my involvement in democratic politics. Activity involved attending many rallies, conferences and weekend schools as well as more general campaigning for Labour candidates. I remember very clearly how excited and honoured I felt at holding such a position.

restore order. And this means of course having enough police officers on the streets. So the UK Government’s plan to cut the policing budget by up to 12% needs to be reviewed urgently. But once order is restored and people can feel safe again, then we must look in depth at the causes.

So when I heard about the appalling and outrageous murder of members of the Youth Wing of the Norwegian Labour Party at their annual summer camp, it made me feel physically sick. These were young people that, like me, had a burning interest in social justice and wanted to make a positive contribution. But for more than 60 of them it marked not the beginning, but the end of their involvement in democratic politics.

Looting and vandalism are criminal acts and there seems plenty of evidence that it was organised. Those responsible must feel the full weight of the law. But we also need to look into the breakdown of our social fabric. This is not a party political point because it’s happened over a number of years but reduced funding brought in now for local voluntary groups and community enterprises is bound to worsen the situation. One year after the announcement of the “Big Society” we see the opposite happening.

But if we can draw any heart from this awful event it must be from the response of the Norwegian people. Their dignity and determination not to let this extremist act alter their way of life serves as an inspiration to all of us. Finally, on this matter, I want to say that it demonstrated the very worst aspect of extremism whether it be religious or political. I think it also appropriate to comment on the terrible rioting in London and other major English cities (at the time of writing there’s been no similar events in Wales). I agree with Ed Miliband that the first priority must be to

It’s imperative that Government at all levels engages with local community leaders. Maybe the work we’ve done in Wales to develop the Communities First partnerships in our most disadvantaged areas is a good model for the UK as a whole! Jeff Cuthbert A.M. The Legal Eagle Compensation for a Riot 38

To the dismay of many August was the month that saw widespread rioting around the United Kingdom, and as a result many victims of those riots have suffered some form of loss, whether that be financial or physical. If you have been affected by the ‘riots’ that spread across the United Kingdom, you may be able to make a claim for compensation under the Riot (Damages) Act 1886. If you feel you have been a victim then claims must be made in writing and as soon as possible, and registered within 14 days of the alleged incident. If you have been a victim of the damaging riots then you should consult a solicitor as soon as possible. If you are unsure then Messrs Evans and Greaves will be able to direct you in the right direction.

the Act will ultimately be passed on to council taxpayers. It seems inevitable that the cost of insurance will also rise as a result. If you have been a victim, then you must act fast and within the 14 days, as required.

A is for Alpha!

Autumn – it’s time for ‘The A Factor’ Evenings drawing in, temperatures going down and X factor on the TV – so it must be autumn then?

There are some details (see ad below) about the Caerphilly Alpha course – and including an information evening on the 25th September – before the course starts proper a week later on the 2nd October.

As well as the Saturday night TV thrills, there is another night I look forward to during the run up to Christmas – and that is ‘Alpha Night’. The Alpha course is now a world-wide success with people from all walks of life getting together around some refreshments, in a fun and relaxed atmosphere to discuss some of the important questions in life – which often otherwise go unanswered or even unasked as we trundle through our busy, busy, busy - far too busy lives.

I hope that I will get to see some of you on this years course, in the meantime here are few quotes from famous folks who have enjoyed Alpha:

Although the course is usually run by churches – it is nothing like a normal church service (whatever that is like!?). A typical evening would consist of some refreshments, a DVD, and some very open and interesting discussions – where the idea is you can ask, and think, whatever you want. I have done the 10 week course several times – and have loved it every time; met new friends, considered new ideas, laughed, thought, and occasionally shared some thoughts.

Alpha is fantastic because it explains it so simply and you go, “Wow, why didn’t I think of that?” Bobby Ball, Comedian I fell in love with the whole concept. It is a fantastic tool, which gives me an ability to ask questions, learn a lot more and discuss it all with different people. Ugo Monye, England Rugby International Doing an Alpha Course is challenging and serious fun, even if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool atheist like me. Deborah Orr, Journalist Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net

Real People, Real God, Real Lives

Gateway Church would like to invite you to attend our Alpha Course 10 week course running on Sundays at 5.15pm at the Twyn Community Centre, The Twyn, Caerphilly Course starts 2nd October For up to date information please call Anne on 07719 356240 or come to our Alpha Course Information event at The Twyn on 25 September at 5.30pm
