Beauty Tips Hi all,

It’s been a year now since the team at Caerphilly County Borough Council have been submitting articles to My Local View and it’s great to see just how much goes on throughout the area. This month’s article shows just how diverse the range of activities are and in my opinion there is literally something for everyone. The What’s on guide we feature has some events to keep us entertained and in particular Llanciaich Fawr has a rather nice event for your Dad on Fathers Day - all about the art of Warfare over the ages. Your Dad, will be a cheap date, as he will get in FREE - more money for Ice Cream then!!

It’s nice to see some new companies added via business advertisements this month and I hope to see many more in our bid to offer affordable options for small companies. As I keep saying it is really tough out there at the moment.

Holly’s Ball was a great success!

Holly’s Ball, an event to help raise Autism Awareness in Wales was held at the Millennium Stadium on 2nd April this year and was a sell out. Plans for Holly’s Ball 2012 are already underway. The event will be held at the Marriott Hotel, Swansea on April 21st 2012. The reservation list is ¾ full already! In addition to Holly’s Ball a sister ball called Emily’s Ball is being held in Oswestry on 28th April 2012. Both events will raise funds for both Autism Cymru and The National Autistic Society Cymru. Holly’s Ball has so far raised over £10,000 for both charities. The event was also successful in helping to raise Autism Awareness with help from Real Radio Wales. The target is to raise double this in 2012 with the help of Emily’s Ball. It was also thanks to the amazing line up of entertainment that the event was so successful. The Compere Comedian Frank Honeybone, who has a young son with Autism, coupled with Jagger and Woody, Real Radio Breakfast Show DJs made the evening extra special. Guests were joined by Melanie Walters and Steffan Rhodri (Gwen West & Dave Coaches from Gavin & Stacey).

By 2013, the organisers hope to have taken Holly’s Ball in to the rest of the UK. The event organisers Holly Salmon (12 years old) and her Mum Jo would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone that supported the event and helped to make it a success.

School News - Rhys is a winner!

At the end of every term, St Cenydd school holds an attendance draw which is sponsored by Tesco in Caerphilly. Any pupil with over 95% attendance for the term has their name placed into the draw and if they have reached 100% their name is put in twice. Rhys Williams, from Year 9, won £40 in Tesco vouchers and a box of chocolates when the draw took place in May. He plans to spend the money on ITunes vouchers. Rhys puts his good attendance down to his mum who makes him to school even when he has a cold!

Many congratulations Rhys! Maria Cook, Assistant Headteacher St. Cenydd Community School

Home Improvements

Something Old Something New Katherine Sorrell

Unexpected and individual, unique and environmentally friendly, well-made and timelessly appealing – how does this sound? Whether we’re talking vintage, retro, antique or, erm, just plain old, there are heaps of good reasons why adding a well-chosen selection of ‘mature’ furnishings to any room scheme can be enormously successful. Old pieces make a statement, have a fascinating history and are built to last. The quality of old pine, for example, is vastly superior to that of new pine (and a nicer colour, too), and old mirrors are much more flattering. What’s more, including even just one antique piece in an otherwise-modern room will add texture and subtle individuality. But just how do you combine old with new, contemporary with classic? Especially when the aim is to be both good-looking and practical, with a look that won’t go out of fashion in the next five minutes. As with all interior design schemes, it’s best to start by assessing your room. Measure it and draw a plan, marking in such key elements as windows, doors, built-in cupboards, radiators, light fittings, plus sockets and so on. Do you need to make any structural changes? If so, now’s the time. If the structure is fine, consider the room’s size and shape, and whether its architectural style will affect the way in which you decorate. Work out where furniture will go, and whether you have too much or too little of it. Now you have a good idea of what type of things you’ll need to look out for – whether you’re planning a trip to the high street, a charity shop, car boot sale or auction house. The next important principle is to concentrate on timeless designs. If it’s well designed, whatever era it dates from, it will work with other pieces. Another good rule is to keep floors, walls and woodwork neutral. They won’t date and, more importantly, won’t clash with your one-off furnishings.

Fresh, modern colours and a vintage vibe contrast beautifully with Georgian architecture. Victoriana bedstead, £299 and Crochet rug, £250; Marks & Spencer (0845 302 1234; www.marksandspencer.com)

On a similar note, avoid having more than one, or perhaps two, ‘statement’ pieces in a room. When you have chosen a piece that you really love, you can build a scheme around it. It could be a chaise longue, a lamp or a hand-made vase – try to complement its characteristics with other key pieces and to provide a pleasant contrast with others. It’s a subtle one, this. Too much contrived matching and the room will look forced; too many contrasting elements and it will lack coherence. It all comes down to a combination of instinct and trial and error – just keep on trying until everything feels right. Colour can be an excellent ally, drawing together disparate items so that they co-ordinate well. It could be that you re-upholster an old armchair and choose co-ordinating cushions for a new sofa, adding in a picture with elements of the same colour, or a vase in a complementary shade. Bingo!

vintage feel to a cheap, modern piece, or adding a touch of class to something frumpy and old-fashioned. If you’re feeling bold, you can even add or remove mouldings, replace solid doors with glazing, or fit additional hanging rails or hooks. The final guideline is perhaps the most important of all: don’t forget function. Old or new, every piece you choose should do its job brilliantly. Mend that sticking drawer or wobbly chair and then you can be as bold and imaginative as you dare, putting together rooms that are as enjoyable to live in as they Adding an old piece into a new scheme can introduce are to look at. gorgeous colour and texture.

Beauty Tips Smile Bright A bright white smile is associated with youth and vitality because as we age, our teeth start to discolour naturally. Whilst good dental health is an essential basis for your youthful smile, many external factors can make otherwise good teeth look unhealthy. So how can you address this? The first step is to avoid the things that cause your teeth to yellow in the first place. Smoking, coffee (particularly black coffee), tea, red wine, cola drinks and curry will all cause discolouring. If you do indulge, brush your teeth as soon as practical afterwards. For red wine or cola using a straw will minimise the effects as this delivers the liquid into your mouth without touching your teeth. Crunchy, raw foods such as

carrots, celery and apples are natural cleaners. They encourage your mouth to salivate and can help to rub off the plaque that sticks to your teeth. There are many whitening toothpastes available although some can be pricey. Often the main ingredient in these toothpastes is baking soda. You can make your own paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda although it won’t taste great and you shouldn’t use it every day as it can be abrasive. If toothpaste and vegetables are not enough to make a noticeable difference, then the next option is to go for a teeth whitening treatment. It is possible to buy kits to do this at home and this is certainly a cost effective way of getting a bright white smile. However, treatment from a dentist will both achieve better results and be much quicker.

Caerphilly events update

Hi everyone, ...

I’m soo excited! I’ve just booked Peppa Pig, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Fireman Sam, Ben 10, Barney, Upsa Daisy, Bob the Builder, Fifi and Hello Kitty to appear at our Blackwood Summer Festival on 16th & 17th July. I can see Blackwood swarming with little ones now to see their favourite characters. The characters may even join them on the bouncy castle!!! The date of this event was initially the 9th & 10th July but we decided to move it back a week because many of our stallholders were already booked for a food and drink event in Cardiff Bay. The new dates are proving to be much more popular with many stalls already booked. There will be plenty to keep the family entertained from craft stalls, funfair, entertainers and much more! That reminds me…I need to book Punch & Judy! Another exciting day in the office this week was the ‘Tour of Britain’ planning meeting – how exciting is this event going to be? The race is going to enter Caerphilly County Borough in Nelson, travel down towards Ystrad Mynach, through Llanbradach into Caerphilly. But the organisers don’t want to give them an easy finish… no…they are taking them up through Caerphilly town centre, up onto the mountain, down to Penrhos roundabout then back into Caerphilly across Nantgarw Road towards the finish line on Crescent Road ….. gosh I’m tired even thinking about it! At the meeting we were shown footage of previous races; seeing all the school children lining the streets with their flags cheering the racers on – it looked fantastic and will be something the children will remember forever. I, on the other hand will be thinking of ways that we can promote the County Borough of Caerphilly because the race is televised to the world, so we need to get our visitcaerphilly branding anywhere and everywhere. Hopefully spectators will log on to our website and see what we have got to offer. I’ve been told that once the winners have been televised the cameras will move to show the castle – and after seeing that, who wouldn’t want to come and pay us a visit!

There’s so much more I would like to tell you but I’m running out of room. So I will briefly have to tell you about the Big Cheese and BBC Proms in the Park. Big Cheese – this year we have a celebrity soap star turn cheese maker providing cookery demonstrations. Martin Platt aka Sean Wilson will be with us all weekend showing us his culinary skills, there will also be a chance to purchase his award winning cheeses. Yum…… BBC Proms in the Park – preparations are well underway for this event as well. We have a database that is growing by the day of people wanting tickets, hopefully by the time this goes to print the tickets will be on sale. Have to go now, I’ve just received a call from another mascot company, and I think I’ve now secured George to keep Peppa Pig company! Oh, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter – twitter.com/ visitcaerphilly to keep up with our activities and keep looking on www.caerphilly.gov.uk/events for all the other exciting events going on because it’s not just us that are busy people. Speak to you all soon.

Sarah-Kate Ackerman Events Officer

Our first event of the Summer season is looming - Caerphilly Flower Festival and Fun Day will take place on 25th & 26th June – we have loads going on at the event this year. With the annual open top bus taking visitors around local churches to see their fabulous floral displays, plus lots going on in the town centre such as craft stalls, continental market and society displays within the Twyn Community Centre. But for the children there’s much much more ….. from pot a plant activities, drumming, puppetry, circus skills and craft workshops ALL FREE!!!! There are also funfair rides, face painting and stiltwalkers. What a lovely event to take a picnic, sit in the lovely Dafydd Williams Park then stroll across to town and let us entertain you and the family. You could take part in the children’s treasure hunt or even the digital photo competition. Don’t forget to cast your vote for the Children’s Wheelbarrow Competition. This can be done at the Visit Caerphilly Centre in the town. With times being so hard, this event doesn’t have to cost you anything with plenty to see and do.

Motoring

Rising In Value

C

ar buyers are used to driving their new purchase off the forecourt and it instantly plummeting in value. It’s a fact of motoring life. Or is it? What if we told you there are some cars out there that are actually rising in value? And we’re not just talking about automotive exotica either. We spoke to experts from trade price bible CAP as well as leading auction house BCA to uncover the cars that are turning residual values on their heads. ‘There are some classic and sports cars that will keep going up in value,’ one expert told us. ‘Others will simply hold firm. But it’s all dependent on how much you use them and their condition.’ So here are our depreciation-busting top picks. Jeep Wrangler This one surprised us too. CAP has found that the Hard Top 4.0 Sahara two-door model with an automatic gearbox has risen £475 in the last 12 months to a trade price of £5,450. CAP says even at this price it’s considered to be a cheap, heavy-duty vehicle – but only for those that can afford to run it. MINI BCA says despite the volumes currently being sold, the Mini is a future classic in waiting. The auction house told us that One models are selling well for around £3,500 to £4,000 even with as many as 100,000 miles on the clock. But prices for well looked after Countryman, Convertible and Clubman models are the firmest.

Ford GT Londonbased dealer Clive Sutton specialises in selling the most exclusive supercars. He often sees cars rise in value, but if he was spending his money it would be the Ford GT he’d shell out on. ‘The Ferrari Enzo was the one to go for a while ago, but prices have cooled,’ he told us. ‘Now the Ford GT is the car to invest in.’ Audi R8 It’s the V8engined sports car from Audi that’s popular with buyers, reports CAP. Our experts said it had a slow start in the used market, but in the last 12 months a 2007 model with 20,000 miles has risen £1,900 in the trade to £53,100. ‘It’s increasing in popularity,’ said CAP’s man in the know. Aston Martin DB7 This is a good sign that the recession is easing. Prices for the Volante Convertible version of the stunning Aston Martin DB7 have risen £1,300 in the trade during the last year, according to CAP. An 04-reg, 50,000 miler currently costs £31,400. ‘Today’s buyers appear less concerned about running costs than they were 12 months ago,’ said CAP. What can you do for me then? A challenge and a fair one at that! Mr Jenkins walked into Precision Chiropractic clinic in November 2010 with terrible symptoms in his left arm and neck pain. 24

He had waves of pins and needles and pain in his arm, had to hold his head in an awkward position and looked visibly tired. He looked at Ben Goffen across the reception desk and issued his challenge. “What can you do for me?” He was at his ‘wits end’.

After a thorough case history, neurological, chiropractic and orthopaedic assessment, it was clear that Mr Jenkins’s problem as most likely caused by a disc bulge in his neck. MRI follow up confirmed this.

✓ Back pain? ✓ Neck pain?

✓ Muscle / joint pain? ✓ Sports injury?

Treatment followed and over the next couple of months we saw Mr Jenkins’s left arm symptoms improve and then disappear, his neck pain also improved and disappeared. He is now able to hold his head up and can even look up to the ceiling (not good, because as he reported, he is now noticing bits of it that could do with a coat of paint!). Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

34

Ray Davies - A Life time of Service The other day Caerphilly had a visit from the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Harriet Harman MP. Harriet came to Caerphilly, or to be precise Llanbradach Bowls Club, for two reasons. Firstly, she joined Labour Party members in celebrating Labour’s victory in the Welsh Assembly elections. And secondly, she came to present Cllr Ray Davies of Bedwas with a Labour Party long service merit award. I have known Ray Davies for a very long time. I first met him when I was a student in Cardiff University, which is a good many years ago. He was a “firebrand” then, and still is. Ray is a socialist through and through and even though I don’t agree with quite a few things he says and does, I have enormous respect for him.

As well as his record of commitment and achievement, Ray personifies one of the greatest qualities anyone can have – loyalty. He has always been “loyal” to the principles he holds and the Party to which he belongs. As Ray himself said at the presentation evening, he recognises that the only way things can change for the better in our country is through the Labour Party. Disappointments there may be, shortcomings there are, but it is only Labour which stands up for the interests of ordinary people.

Ray is firmly on the “left”. He is a true internationalist and is a long-standing supporter of the Palestinian people; he is vice-chairman of CND Cymru and is a committed member of the Cardiff Red Choir.

Ray thoroughly deserves this award. It is important that service and dedication are recognised. But it is also important that young people learn and gain inspiration from Ray’s example.

At the same time, Ray is a very active and conscientious Borough councillor. He represents the Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen ward on the council and is well thought of by everyone in the community.

Next year Ray is standing for re-election to the Council. I, for one, sincerely hope that he will be reelected with a thumping majority.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Love your Lawn I have to confess that I am not a big fan of lawns, especially looking after them. Beloved, bless her, looks after ours and several clients – and does a great job too (once I have patiently explained to her what to do). Cutting the grass has never got my heart racing as an exciting job, which is probably why I am so open to the idea of delegating the task: but every so often, on a warm summers day, I stop in front of a beautiful freshly cut stripey lawn sweeping away into the distance, and I have this hard to control urge to lie down and go ‘roly-poly’ over the lush carpet inhaling the smell of a British summer afternoon… know what I mean? A rich stripey lawn is something we Brits are known for all over the world – but it seems we have neglected our calling, and our reputation is at stake. We think twice about spending £20.00 per year on some ‘weed n feed’ – but would happily spend that on a meal out in one night … and I am criticising myself here not you my dears!

So how about we start to ‘love our Lawns’ again this year? I will if you will… Now is a great time to start – there are a whole array of treatments you start applying now to discourage the weeds and encourage thick low carpets of the green stuff instead. Don’t get too discouraged if it feels like 2 steps forward and 1 step back, that can happen in the garden but plants can be resilient and persistent – so don’t give up, because plants usually don’t. Regular cutting helps too; it will encourage new side growth from lower down the plant, which helps create that spongy ‘roly-poly’ lawn we are looking for, and discourages those ‘aggressive tall clumps of grass with attitude’ the lawn that says ‘yeah I know I look rough – but am I bovvered?’ What about us are we bothered? I will be listening out for the sound of those lawn mowers…

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly

I must begin of course by thanking the people of the Caerphilly Constituency for re-electing me as their Assembly Member. I am truly humbled by the trust that’s been put in me once again. I will continue to represent the interests of my constituents at the Assembly to the very best of my ability. My contact details are unchanged and I’m available to assist anyone (regardless of who they voted for!) living in the constituency. Furthermore I’m delighted and honoured to have been appointed by the First Minister as the Deputy Minister for Skills. In this job I’ll have responsibility for working with employers, further education, higher education, trade unions and learning providers to ensure that skill requirements are properly identified and delivered. I take this appointment very seriously. It’s essential that if Wales is to take advantage of future employment and investment opportunities then we must have a workforce that is appropriately skilled, flexible, and able to respond to changing circumstances quickly. This is a matter that’s interested me for many years and I’m so pleased that I’m now in a position to help achieve our goals. At the time of writing this article I don’t know how much time the job of Deputy Minister requires. But it’s inevitable that I’ll have to visit other parts of Wales so the time that I have to be in this constituency will be reduced. But I will ensure that I remain in close

touch with my Office so that the actual service to constituents is not reduced significantly. This Assembly term will last for five years so that the next Assembly election does not clash with UK General Election in 2015. What the next five years holds for us all remains to be seen. But we know that public finances will be squeezed as a result of reduced settlements from the UK Government. A crucial part of our job is to make sure that the money available for public services is used in the most effective way possible. And that will demand greater collaboration between big spending bodies such as local government and the health service. I’ll be using my page in “My Local View” to keep you up to date with important developments.

Health Watch

Bites and Stings When an insect bites or stings you, it makes a small hole in your skin, usually in order to feed on your blood. The sting will contain chemicals which are an irritant and will trigger a very mild through to a very severe reaction. Most stings are unnoticed at the time except those of bees and wasps, but the swelling and itchiness that follows brings it to your notice. If you can still see the sting in the wound you should remove it as soon as possible. It is better to scrape it out than to use tweezers as pinching it can cause the venom sac to further deposit its contents into your skin. There is one important exception to this though, and that is if you have a tick which has latched itself onto any part of your body. This will look rather like a dark, swollen tag mole and it must be completely

removed otherwise you risk developing Lyme disease. You can use tweezers to remove a tick ensuring you pull straight up rather than twisting the tick out. If you are unsure how to do this consult your GP. If your skin becomes particularly itchy as a result of being bitten, a flannel soaked in cold water and taking paracetamol or ibuprofren can relieve the discomfort. Over the counter preparations may also help, or if you are really suffering, your GP will prescribe crotamiton cream. Antihistamines may be recommended to help reduce the reaction. Finally, despite the temptation, try to avoid scratching the area as this increases the risk that the bite will become infected, especially if your hands are dirty.

Tongue in Cheek - Working from Home Working from home 42

In Sickness and in Health by Ted Bruning

B

eing ill is simple when you work in an office. You just stay at home until you’re better. Of course, there are refinements. For example: do you ring in sick early, before the switchboard is warmed up, and leave a message hoping nobody will bother will call back? Or do you wait until the boss has his/her coffee, and then ring up and really lay it on with a trowel? The actor in me says the latter; the coward says the former. It’s not so simple when you work from home, though, because work and home are the same place and – if you’ll pardon the metaphysics – the same time. If you’re an office worker with a snuffle that looks like it could turn nasty, then you make a decision at a specific time – ie the last moment you can leave home in time to catch the bus – not to go to a specific place – ie the office. If you work from home then that time doesn’t exist, and you’re already in that place. So how do we workers-from-home decide when we’re too ill to go to work? Well, there are two options: (a) when we’re genuinely too ill to get out of bed, and (b) when we’re not really that ill but there’s nothing vital to do. These two states of ill-health correspond exactly to those that keep office workers at home; it’s the process of deciding exactly when one or the other has been attained and then acting on it that is less well-defined and therefore more problematical for us workers-fromhome. You have to be really, really (a) or really, really (b) before you admit that you’re far too ill to crank up the PC. (And yes, it is possible to be really, really (b), although it feels more like apathy than illness). Then there’s guilt. If you’re an officeworker, there’s a simple piece of political philosophy that can utterly zap employee guilt: it’s called Marxism. All value is labour, says Karl: the value of goods and service precisely equates the labour that has gone into them. Capitalists become

rich by appropriating most of the value of the workers’ labour; so every moment you spend at work you’re being robbed. By calling in sick, you keep your miserly share of the value of your labour – without actually surrendering the labour itself. So throwing a sickie is a crime prevention measure and a blow for social justice. Don’t feel guilty, feel proud! But if you’re selfemployed then you are both capitalist and labourer, so whichever way you look at it you’re robbing yourself. Again, don’t feel guilty: feel confused. My musings on illness were prompted by a recent bout of flu during which I ran a high temperature and so enjoyed a state of mild delirium. During my uncontrolled mental ramblings two (mercifully short) poems leapt fully-formed into my fevered brain. I don’t pretend to understand them. Delirium is the twin brother of dreaming, and just as incomprehensible. But they made me laugh, so here they are. ODE TO WILLIAM HAGUE Whether you take this ode as a compliment is up to you. It’s just something that’s there, and perhaps slightly surprising, Like suddenly seeing your portrait painted on a boulder Or tattooed on the rear end of a pig. STEPHEN FRY IS WATER Stephen Fry is water. He is everywhere and necessary, The loving gift of a bountiful God. Not enough Stephen Fry and we wither. Too much and our carpets get wet. No, I don’t get it either.

At this time of year you want to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen so here’s a quick and easy supper that takes less than 25 minutes to create.

Ser ves Tak 2 es 2 0m ins

350g (12oz) linguine 1 tbsp olive oil 1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 225g (8oz) raw, peeled tiger prawns 8 sundried tomatoes in oil, sliced, plus 3-4 tbsp of the marinating oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper Few fresh basil leaves Cook the linguine in a large pan of lightly salted, boiling water for 10-12 mins or according to the packet instructions until tender but still with a little bite. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the chill for 1-2 mins. Add the prawns and cook over a medium-high heat for 3-4 mins, stirring all the time until they have turned from grey to pink. Drain the pasta and add to the frying pan with the sun-dried tomatoes and the marinating oil. Toss well to mix and heat through for 1-2 mins. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately garnished with fresh basil leaves.

TOP TIP - If you’re not too keen on chilli then replace with a finely chopped spring onion. Deadline for our July issue: Weds 22nd June 2011 - Follow us on Twitter: @mylocalview

The Legal Eagle - Social Media A right to protect and inform’ 50

Readers would have heard very recently in the news the ongoing case of a Super-Injunction being used to protect an identity/information. The Question remains what is an Injunction?

main vehicles between businesses and society.

An injunction or a Super-Injunction as they are called is an equitable remedy in the form of a Court Order that requires a party to do, or to refrain from doing, certain acts.

Interestingly enough it has been said that only 2 Super-Injunctions have been granted since January 2010, so they are rare.

If a party fails to comply with an Injunction (as ordered by the Court), they could face criminal or civil penalties, and may have to pay damages or accept sanctions.

And why are they used?

If you feel that you are a victim that requires an Injunction then please consult a lawyer.

Neighbourhood Policing Caerphilly residents are reminded to be Gardenwise this Summer 56

During the warmer weather Caerphilly residents will be spending an increasing amount of money looking after their gardens. Whether its new garden furniture or a new BBQ residents should always be vigilant and take extra precautions by securing everything away. Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector for Bedwas and Caerphilly, Inspector Paul Staniforth has the following summer Gardenwise advice: SHEDS AND OTHER SMALL BUILDINGS

- Take steps and ensure that your shed is sound and in good condition checking both its fabric and appearance. - Once the fabric of a building is sound you can then improve physical security: Fit a good lock on the shed door, the padlock itself should be of the ‘close shackle’ type, made of hardened steel, fit an alarm and fit all windows with a grille - When you are satisfied that your building is secure, USE the locks at all times.

PROPERTY

Don’t make it easy to steal them and remember that tools stolen from your shed could be used to burgle your house. - Post Code all property - Take photographs of any valuable garden ornaments - Never leave items unattended, especially valuable ones

OUTDOORS - Install security lights to illuminate your garden - Keep shrubs, hedges and large plants cut back - Check your boundary fences, walls and gates - keep them in good repair - Get your neighbours to keep an eye on your garden at all times of the day and night - Report anything suspicious to the police as soon as possible

Should you need further crime prevention advice you can always contact the Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team on: 02920 857 453 or e-mail: caerphilly@gwent.pnn.police.uk or the Bedwas Neighbourhood Policing Team on: 02920 857 454 or e-mail: bedwas@gwent.pnn.police.uk To find out what is happening in your neighbourhood and more about your local Neighbourhood Policing Team visit www.gwent. police.uk and enter your postcode. You can also follow us on twitter www.twitter. com/gwentpolice and find us on Facebook www. facebook.com/gwentpolice

ALLOTMENTS

Allotments are harder to protect but much of the above advice can be applied to them. - Get to know your neighbours on the allotment - Remember - don’t leave expensive equipment on site if you can avoid it

GARAGES Ensure the structure is sound and in good condition, especially timbers around the doors and any windows. - Up and over doors should be fitted with an additional lock to the one provided - Keep timber doors well maintained, hinges secured by bolts and locked by good quality mortice locks - Separate pedestrian access doors should be of solid construction and fitted with a good quality 5 lever mortice lock - Main garage doors should be internally secured with at least 1 key operated lock - Windows should be treated in a similar way to those of sheds - Fit a small space alarm or, if possible, include your garage on your house alarm

Thought for the Month

Are you like me? When you think back to when you were a child, can you recognise a person who has influenced you ever since? When I nervously crept into junior school for the first time, with my knees knocking beneath my school shorts; trying not to cry…like my friend Phillip Alder who I recall was sobbing into his Mum’s coat. I had heard rumours of a teacher to be avoided at all costs – the dreaded battleaxe who was Mrs Pfeiffer (affectionately known as ‘fussy Pfeiffer’ by her fans). It would be considered very bad luck to be allocated to her for a year as your teacher; I of course went 1 step further and managed to get her for a record breaking 2 years.

Her most famous saying was, the now less common, “If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well” Something happened in me as a result of all that old fashioned drumming in of her rules and sayings – they became part of me…although at the time I was none too happy about her somewhat Victorian regime!

She was a classic ‘old fashioned school mistress’, who had eyes like a hawk, a piercing stare above her horn rimmed glasses. I am sure that during the war, before the arrival of Radar, they used people like Fussy Pfeiffer to spot enemy activity from miles away – she could certainly spot an innocent childhood giggle from 50 yards .

Anyway, I discovered that beneath that amour plated exterior was a heart of gold: she was a great teacher, and a huge influence on all of us in class 6c and 7c (little angels we were).

I was reminded of fussy Pfeiffer recently, when I heard a more recent influence of mine – Bill Johnson – challenge us to think, not just about what we are doing for our generation; who may or may not thank us for what we are doing – but also to think about what we can do for a generation we shall never meet, and who will never be able to thank us – but will be greatly affected by the decisions and plans we make. How will the fine folks of 2111 speak of us in 100 years time? (We do have a choice in the matter.) Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net
